While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

Some solid pinosity here at a pretty sharp pricepoint. Bright ruby red in the glass with aromas of red cherry and raspberries with hints of exotic spice, herbs, purple flowers, leaf litter and earth. Spacious, fruit pure and spicy there's plenty of zip to the acid profile and a finish that is plush with redcurrants and raspberries. Drink by 2030.

Pinot noir sourced from the Huon Valley; destemmed, nine months in oak (2% new). Juicy and pure fruited straight out of the gate, with a slice of sweet spice and forest floor complexity vying for attention. Gentle on tannin with bright acidity, it slides into a more savoury shape and exits with a medium-length memory of its transit. Drink 2023 - 2026.

Deep dark red core with black tinged edges and a bright red purple hue. Fragrantly scented, alluring aromatics of violets, dark cherries, anise and strawberries meld into forest floor, fresh herb and spicy cedar notes. Long, elegant and very savoury the cooler 2000 vintage has produced a wine that’s not quite as ripe and juicy as past vintages. Red to dark cherry and winter strawberry fruits drive the palate morphing into fresh herb, stalky cedar, forest floor and spice nuances on the back half. A refined supple mouthfeel and polished tannin structure counterpointed by a beautifully balanced freshness. Excellent power wave with a long cool toned finish.

Home Hill Winery established their first plantings of Pinot Noir & Chardonnay in 1994. Owned and operated by the Bennett family, the winery has since become one of the most prestigious and awarded wineries in Tasmania. In 2015 they won the coveted Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy for the 2014 Kelly's Reserve Pinot Noir.
Unfortunately, there were no wines made in 2019 due to the widespread bush fires in Tasmania at the time. Thankfully this was not the case in 2020 as the winery was able to produce some much sought-after wine.
Notes from the winery....
Home Hill Flagship wine displays concentrated fruit that combines with chary French oak to deliver a seductive & age worthy Pinot Noir. The Kelly’s Reserve Pinot Noir is made from a blend of the top barrels from the vintage, always with one small section of the vintage at its core. Deep dark ruby with purple hues in colour with aromas of violets, cherries, sandalwood and liquorice that jump out of the glass. Uplifting fruit has a great combination with the French oak to give mushroom and earthy characteristics on the mid palate. This wine has good texture, lovely balance, round tannins, big mouthfeel and a long silky after taste that goes on forever. This Pinot Noir has the capacity to be cellared for up to 15 years. Picked on the 20th of April 2020. Cold year. Handpicked and pruned. -

2019 Hospice De Beaune (Coche-Dury) Pommard Cuvee Suzanne ChaudronBurgundy, FRANCEReduced from $1,150.00$899. 00Bottle$10788.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkSince the first edition in 1859, the annual Hospices de Beaune auction has become a barometer for the strength of the new vintage in Burgundy, and is now the most famous charity auction in the world of wine. Over the years the charitable cause was given vineyards among other donations, and auctions off barrels from these holdings during a extended celebration in Burgundy over the third weekend of November.
When the Cyrot-Chaudron couple left vineyards to the Hospices de Beaune in 1979, the gift included several plots of very ancient vines. Over 40% of the vines were planted prior to 1959, with the oldest block dating from 1910. More than a third of the Cuvée comes from the southeast facing, low-yield hillsides of Les Petits Noizons, which dominate Pommard from the north. A select few barrels from 2019 vintage were purchased by the prestigious Domaine Coche-Dury for elevage in their cellars, a program they have invested heavily in recent years.
Other Reviews....
A slightly denser purple with some muscle to the fruit. This is a typically powerful dense Pommard with some tannins, ripe however, to bring up the finish. In fact it could be a textbook example, ideal for lovers of a classical Pommard. There is a pleasing weight of dark berry fruit returning at the back behind the well ripened tannins.

The 2022 village Chambolle from Hudelot-Noëllat is delicious with its deep colour and prominent black plum and cassis fruit aromas touched with lavender. The village-level Vosne from Hudelot-Noëllat is perhaps more attractive than ever, with a forward, prominent blackberry aroma and notes of violets, ginger, and earth. The wine has a silky texture and great finesse on the palate, along with an immensely appealing sweet character to the fruit. The grapes come from Basses Maizières, not far from his Suchots. This exquisite wine has intense red and black fruit aromas with a floral edge and an almost salty savoury intensity. The texture is silky but tightly wound. It is commonly thought that the upper part of Suchots is superior, but this version gives that idea the lie. Here, the 100-year-old vines in the domaine's 0.45-hectare parcel make the wine special, along with Van Caneyt's very able winemaking. This wine should open well in three to five years and will undoubtedly last another 40 (at least) beyond that. Drink 2035-2065.

Charles Curtis MW - DecanterOnce again the nose is wonderfully fresh and even spicier with its aromas of poached plum and liqueur-like dark pinot fruit that is also tinged with exotic tea wisps. There is noticeably better density to the caressing and seductively textured yet decided powerful flavors that brim with dry extract before concluding in a moderately austere and hugely long finale. This too is quite compact and very much built to repay extended keeping. Drink through 2034+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2022 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots is one of the highlights of the range this year. Wafting from the glass with aromas of plums, cassis, orange zest and exotic spices and framed by a deft application of new oak, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and multidimensional, with terrific depth, velvety tannins and a long, broad finish.

All the grapes for this cuvée are still destemmed: 'I'm a classic guy,' according to winemaker Charles van Canneyt. His Charmes is produced from two parcels that total 0.21 hectares. He extracts carefully, using a mixture of punching down and pumping over before ageing in cask (primarily used). The result is lighter than some from this vineyard, with a supple, elegant texture and perfumed cherry fruit aromas that are very pleasant. This wine excels in both quality and Chambolle typicity. Drink 2028-2055.

Charles Curtis MW - DecanterOnce again there is a highly attractive freshness to the bright, airy and cool aromas of essence of red cherry, anise, violet and rose petal. Like the Murgers, the middleweight flavors are not especially dense but possess a lilting and silky mouthfeel that is wonderfully appealing before terminating in a dusty, stony, moderately austere and sneaky long finale that doesn't lack for aging potential. This wine is superbly silky and seamless, long but not heavy, and distinguished by a marvellously forward blackberry and pomegranate fruit aroma touched with earth and spice. This immense Clos de Vougeot shows power without astringency. The grapes are from the domaine's 0.70 hectares near the château in the spots known as Chioures and La Garenne. The carefully sorted grapes are mostly destemmed and fermented on native yeasts; the wines are currently ageing in cask (half new) and will be bottled after two winters without fining or filtration. Immediately impressive with a beguiling combination of fruit expression, silkiness and length. The nose boasts raspberry, bramble and kirsch with notes of violets, earth and smoke. The texture is deceptively silky, and with time the firm tannins and rich extract make themselves felt and lead into a lingering finish. Neal Martin - VinousThis vineyard tends to make fuller and richer wines than Romanée St-Vivant but it doesn’t show in the colour. The bouquet, though, is another matter: magically perfumed, an imperial majesty that fills every part of the mouth, luxurious but never vulgar, swamping the present and entirely necessary structure, just a point of youthful bitters alongside the acidity at the back. A ripe dark fruited and spicy nose precedes the impressively dense and voluminous flavors that possess very good weight for a Bourgogne, all wrapped in a saline, firm and focused finale. This is potentially very good for the appellation and worth a look. Drink 2023+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2019 Bourgogne Rouge has turned out nicely, bursting with aromas of cherries, raspberries and sweet soil tones. Medium to full-bodied, lively and charming, with powdery tannins and a succulent core of fruit, it's a fine introduction to the domaine's style. Drink 2020 - 2035.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)The 2019 Bourgogne Rouge was very tight on the nose, making it difficult to eke out much fruit at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, moderate depth and grip and a hint of salinity toward the finish. This will need 18–24 months in bottle. Drink 2022 - 2026.

This is almost as spicy as the Vosne with its range of anise, sandalwood, earth and tea-like nuances adding breadth to the violet-tinged dark berry fruit aromas. The sleek, intense and delineated medium-bodied flavors possess even better depth and persistence on the relatively powerful finish. This is a very good Nuits villages and recommended.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges Au Bas de Combe reveals a perfumed bouquet of raspberries, rose petals, orange rind and potpourri, complemented by rich soil tones and a deft framing of oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, supple and fleshy, with an open-knit core of ripe but succulent fruit. This is an especially elegant Nuits, concluding a lovely triumvirate of communal bottlings chez Hudelot-Noellat this year.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2020)The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Au Bas de Combe Village has a pretty dark cherry, briar and undergrowth bouquet, well-defined and nicely focused. The palate is medium-bodied and quite saline with good acidity. A discreet meatiness comes through toward the finish and a dash of five-spice appears on the aftertaste. This is a fascinating Nuits Saint-George.

Noticeable wood is present here as well on the discreetly spicy mix of red and dark currant, earth and a touch of forest floor. There is excellent intensity to the larger-scaled and mouthcoating flavors that flash outstanding power on the focused, long and very serious finish. In much the same fashion as the Malconsorts, the supporting tannins are relatively fine-grained which prevents this from seeming unduly rustic.
92-94 points
Allen Meadows - BurghoundAromas of wild berries, spices, peonies, dark chocolate and subtle hints of grilled meats introduce the 2018 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, a full-bodied, deep and broad-shouldered wine that's deep, concentrated and reserved. It had a late malolactic, making this one of the more backward cuvées in the cellar. There are fully 14 barrels this year, equating to a yield of around 45 hectoliters per hectare from the domaine's 0.69-hectare parcel.
93-95+ points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2020)The 2018 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is the one cru that did not "click" with me out of barrel, coming across a little sullen compared to the Vosne Premier Crus. The palate is better thanks to the fine, slightly chalky tannins and the almost racy acidity that lends so much freshness and nervosité on the finish. Once the aromatics meld together, as I am sure they will do by the time of bottling, this should evolve into a fine Clos de Vougeot.

This is the first wine to exhibit any appreciable reduction and it's enough to mask the fruit. More interesting are the velvety, generous and extremely rich flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract on the bitter cherry pit-inflected finale. As is usually the case, this is not as refined but it's definitely more powerful.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2018 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots is showing brilliantly this year, wafting from the glass with a deep-pitched bouquet of cassis, blackberries, spices and dark chocolate. On the palate, it's full-bodied, rich and enveloping, its textural attack segueing into a deep and layered core, concluding with a long and penetrating finish.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2020)The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru has a typically opulent, generous bouquet, as one would expect from this vineyard, armed with precocious black cherries, cassis and violet aromas. This is very ripe with notes of mocha and port on the liqueur-like aromas of cassis, spice and discreet floral nuances. There is better freshness to the super-sleek, intense and refined middle weight flavors that retain good detail while also flashing impressive power on the sappy and acidulated bon bons finish. This is one of those atypical 2018s that is riper than I personally prefer.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2020)The 2018 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru, matured in 50% new oak like all the domaine’s grand crus, has a tightly wound bouquet of black cherries, raspberry coulis and touches of bergamot tea and briar. Lovely definition, but bashful at this early stage. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity and a smooth texture. This is actually aromatically similar to the Chambolle villages but with markedly more spice elements in play. There is a lovely sense of vibrancy to the well-detailed medium weight flavors that don't possess quite the same density but there is slightly better balance and overall depth.

Here the nose is compositionally similar to the Charmes save for the fact that it's much spicier. The super-sleek, intense and beautifully well-detailed middle weight flavors brim with minerality on the classy and sneaky long finale. This is like rolling small pebbles around in the mouth and the associated salinity adds a sense of lift to the finish. Good stuff.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundAnother great success this year is the 2018 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaumonts, a brilliant cuvée in the making that bursts with aromas of cassis, cherries, smoked duck, dried flowers and rich soil tones. On the palate, it's full-bodied, rich and textural, with a multidimensional core of lavishly ripe but succulent fruit that entirely conceals the wine's structuring tannins. Readers who are unable to secure a few bottles of Hudelot-Noellat's Richebourg this year should consider consoling themselves with this Beaumonts, as the latter tastes in many respects like the former's junior sibling.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.
Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
