Pinot Noir

While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

This is almost always an excellent wine in the context of its place in the Burgundian hierarchy and 2020 is no exception. There is excellent freshness to the airy and ripe dark berry fruit aromas that are liberally laced by earth and discreet spice wisps. The racy and appealingly textured middle weight flavors possess solid depth and persistence on the balanced finale. As is usually the case, this should readily permit early accessibility. Drink from 2023+.

Revealing aromas of cherries, raspberries and spices, the 2020 Bourgogne Rouge is medium to full-bodied, layered and velvety, with fine concentration, lively acids and a long finish. It's a terrific cuvée that punches above its weight. Drink 2021 - 2035.

Rich deep purple, with a very perfumed, ultra raspberry bouquet – very attractive but quite extreme. On the palate the flavours are perhaps a little bit too rich, Christmas cake character, hyper concentrated for Burgundy.

A spicier if not cooler note is both very pretty and quite fresh with its array of dark pinot fruit, violet and exotic tea. The notably rich and again, appealingly textured medium-bodied flavors are succulent but punchy on the equally complex and persistent finish. This too is well-worth your interest. Drink from 2027+.

Aromas of cassis, dark berries, sweet spices and loamy soil introduce the 2020 Vosne-Romanée Village, a medium to full-bodied, lively and concentrated wine that's more tightly wound and youthfully primary than its Chambolle-Musigny counterpart. Framed by bright acids and powdery tannins, it reveals terrific potential.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)

Exceptionally concentrated dark black colour with purple rim. This seems to be a little on the massive side. Black raspberry maybe plums, not especially Vosne but this can change with further elevage and a racking, as it may very well do.

Elegant and supple, it may lack the concentration of some from this domaine, but it has an echo of the cherry and violet aromas of Suchots within a lighter, fresher frame. In short, a very nice result at the village level. This Vosne is produced from a single parcel of 0.78ha in Bas Maizières, located downslope from Suchots. The vines are nearly 40 years of age and in 2020 they were picked at 13% potential alcohol. Drink 2025 - 2040.

This is also attractively spicy with its layered aromas of various dark berries, earth and a whiff of plum. The highly energetic and beautifully detailed flavors possess an equally appealing texture while exuding a refreshing salinity on the slightly firmer, lingering and youthfully austere finale. This is an excellent Nuits villages and one to look for. Drink from 2028+.

The 2020 Nuits-Saint-Georges Au Bas de Combe exhibits notes of cassis, cherries, sweet berries, warm spices and creamy new oak, followed by a medium to full-bodied, richly layered and concentrated palate that's vibrant and complete. Deep and seamless, it concludes with a long, penetrating finish. It's showing especially well this year.

Rich black purple, powerful, more solid even than the Vosne but it is all good. Some blackberry. And blackcurrant leaf. Plenty of structure, very good acidity behind the natural Nuits tannins.

Fermented with 20% whole clusters and aged in 15% new casks, this delivers deeply ripe black fruits, with smoky, earthy nuance and an exotic, savoury, almost animal note. This is from a parcel of 0.22ha at the base of the combe. The cooling influence kept the potential alcohol to 13% and the result is superb. Typical of the village and particularly good for a village-level wine. Drink 2023 - 2035.

An interestingly mix is comprised by notes of earth, spice, ripe dark currant and wisps of the sauvage plus a floral top note. The rich and highly energetic larger-scaled flavors possess excellent mid-palate density that coats the palate with sappy dry extract and buffers the very firm tannic spine shaping the intensely mineral-driven, compact and quite serious finale. This is potentially excellent, and better than usual, but patience advised. Drink from 2035+.

The 2020 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Murgers unwinds in the glass with aromas of cassis, cherries, dark berries, loamy soil, warm spices and orange rind. Fine rich purple, heady Vosne side bouquet, with plenty of gas inside helping to keep it fresh. This is beautifully stylish with exceptional length of flavour as well as the classy heady quality of this end of the appellation. Nice oak balance.

Shows a slightly exotic edge, with a salty, almost savoury element. Still, there is also a pleasant floral note and lovely definition to the red and black fruit aromas. The texture is firm but not forbidding. Aux Murgers, at the bottom of the slope on the Vosne side of the village, produces a sturdier wine than Damodes at the top. The domaine has nearly 0.7ha here; the grapes are fermented with about 20% whole clusters before ageing in cask (25% new). Drink 2025 - 2050.

A riper and less elegant but more complex nose combines notes of black raspberry, cassis, Asian-style tea and a plethora of exotic spice nuances, especially star anise and hoisin. There is excellent mid-palate density to the suave but relatively powerful medium weight plus flavors that possess a highly attractive texture, all wrapped in a caressing, velvety and strikingly long finale where the only nit is a touch of warmth. This too is terrific, and it should be a knockout in time though it could likely be approached after only 7 to 8 years of keeping. Drink 2034+.

Lavish and enveloping, the 2019 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots offers up inviting aromas of plums, raspberries, sweet spices, rich soil tones and rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, layered and textural, it's concentrated and gourmand, with lively acids and a long, expansive finish.

The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru was quite broody on the nose, not as cohesive or as vigorous as the Les Beaumonts. The palate is medium-bodied with a firm structure, more savory than the Les Beaumonts, earthier but just tapering a little toward the finish. Compared to the Malconsorts, this left me wanting more. Drink 2023 - 2038.

Really dense dark purple follows the pattern of the Hudelot-Noëllat cellar in 2019, while the bouquet adds a level of brilliance. There is a suavity to the texture too, with an immense weight of fruit, but still maintaining a leaner backbone and great persistence. The acidity is concentrated too. This wine needs more time in barrel to finish coming together, but it has exceptional potential.

Initially there is a touch of what the Burgundians call bourgeon de cassis (cassis blossom) though aggressive swirling eventually reveals pretty, even airy, aromas display notes of red and dark currant, ample earth and underbrush nuances plus hints of spice and wood. The sleek, delicious and intense medium weight plus flavors possess a caressing but powerful palate impression while exhibiting outstanding length on the youthfully austere and very firm finale. The 2019 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is also very promising, mingling aromas of cherries, earthy wild berries, rose petals and spices in an incipiently complex mélange. Full-bodied, rich and layered, it's elegantly muscular and built for the long haul, its enveloping core of fruit largely concealing serious reserves of fine, powdery tannins.

There are just eight barrels instead of the usual 13 barrels of the 2019 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru this year. Matured in around 50% new oak, it has a hard job following the superlative Malconsorts, but does its best with blackberry, wild hedgerow and light iodine aromas. The palate is succulent on the entry, and quite effervescent, with a fine bead of acidity, but maybe this is just a little too exotic toward the finish. It needs to show more refinement once in bottle. Drink 2023 - 2038.

8.5 barrels instead of 13. Dense, black purple here, nose suggests depth power and quality without detail. This is really fine on the palate with a starburst of energy, not too ripe at all with some raspberry essence taking the lead. Tannins and acidity in perfect balance, properly persistent. Very fine this year!

Riper yet still quite fresh aromas consist mainly of plum liqueur, earth, spice elements and a whiff of the sauvage. The suave, round and solidly concentrated medium-bodied flavors possess very good size, weight and power while delivering fine length on the balanced finale that is partially shaped by bright acidity. While there is clearly the requisite stuffing to reward extended keeping, this should also drink reasonably well young. Drink 2031+.

The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Murgers 1er Cru was the most backward on the nose among the domaine’s 2019s, delivering sultry black fruit, loam and touches of damp leaves. The palate is nicely structured, more muscular than the Au Bas de Combe, and displaying fine mineralité, although it needs to develop just a touch more sustain on the aftertaste. It will certainly need 3–4 years in bottle before it shows what it can do. Drink 2023 - 2036.

Extra deep rich dark purple. The nose is completely power packed, but in balance, very inky with some blackberry notes. On the one hand this is at the limit of maximum ripeness before toppling over, on the other there is a notably long finish. I shall be cautious.

This is almost as spicy as the Vosne with its range of anise, sandalwood, earth and tea-like nuances adding breadth to the violet-tinged dark berry fruit aromas. The 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges Au Bas de Combe reveals a perfumed bouquet of raspberries, rose petals, orange rind and potpourri, complemented by rich soil tones and a deft framing of oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, supple and fleshy, with an open-knit core of ripe but succulent fruit. This is an especially elegant Nuits, concluding a lovely triumvirate of communal bottlings chez Hudelot-Noellat this year.

Noticeable wood is present here as well on the discreetly spicy mix of red and dark currant, earth and a touch of forest floor. There is excellent intensity to the larger-scaled and mouthcoating flavors that flash outstanding power on the focused, long and very serious finish. In much the same fashion as the Malconsorts, the supporting tannins are relatively fine-grained which prevents this from seeming unduly rustic.

Aromas of wild berries, spices, peonies, dark chocolate and subtle hints of grilled meats introduce the 2018 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, a full-bodied, deep and broad-shouldered wine that's deep, concentrated and reserved. It had a late malolactic, making this one of the more backward cuvées in the cellar. There are fully 14 barrels this year, equating to a yield of around 45 hectoliters per hectare from the domaine's 0.69-hectare parcel.

The 2018 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is the one cru that did not "click" with me out of barrel, coming across a little sullen compared to the Vosne Premier Crus. The palate is better thanks to the fine, slightly chalky tannins and the almost racy acidity that lends so much freshness and nervosité on the finish. Once the aromatics meld together, as I am sure they will do by the time of bottling, this should evolve into a fine Clos de Vougeot.

This is the first wine to exhibit any appreciable reduction and it's enough to mask the fruit. More interesting are the velvety, generous and extremely rich flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract on the bitter cherry pit-inflected finale. Here the nose is compositionally similar to the Charmes save for the fact that it's much spicier. Another great success this year is the 2018 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaumonts, a brilliant cuvée in the making that bursts with aromas of cassis, cherries, smoked duck, dried flowers and rich soil tones. On the palate, it's full-bodied, rich and textural, with a multidimensional core of lavishly ripe but succulent fruit that entirely conceals the wine's structuring tannins. Readers who are unable to secure a few bottles of Hudelot-Noellat's Richebourg this year should consider consoling themselves with this Beaumonts, as the latter tastes in many respects like the former's junior sibling.

Domaine Hudelot-Noellat produce some of the finest expressions of Pinot Noir in the Cotes de Nuits. This iconic producer has 10 hectares of vineyards located in prime spots within the some of the best appellations of Burgundy, including the Grand Crus of Clos de Vougeot, Romanée-Saint-Vivant and Richebourg. Charles Van Canneyt, grandson of Alain Hudelot, has run the domaine since 2008, and the wines under his care are refined and expressive. Charles is growing the vineyard organically most vintages, however, if the weather is challenging and the crop at high risk of disease, he is willing to treat them accordingly.

The liqueur-like aromas of plum, spice and dark raspberry are also quite ripe without being unduly jammy. There is slightly better energy to the relatively fine and nicely detailed medium-bodied flavors that exude a refreshing salinity on the clean, focused and mildly austere finale.

Wafting from the glass with notes of cherries, raspberries, rose petals and orange rind, the 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Village is medium to full-bodied, supple and fleshy, with refined tannins, lively acids and a perfumed finish.

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Village is a blend of 11 parcels and aged in 20% new oak. It offers pretty blueberry and raspberry aromas on the nose, which is quite understated in the context of the vintage. The palate is sweet and candied on the entry with supple tannins and good acidity, though perhaps the finish is just missing a little flair and complexity. Drink over the next decade.

An exceptionally ripe nose displays a port-like nuance on the spicy and earthy dark raspberry and cassis-suffused nose. There is better freshness on the palate along with excellent richness and concentration to the powerful and mouthcoating middle weight plus flavors that deliver fine length on the very firm finale. This is impressive in its fashion though it's a bit too ripe for me.

Wafting from the glass with aromas of cassis, red fruit compote, potpourri and smoked meats, the 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Murgers is medium to full-bodied, gourmand and textural, with a deep core of fruit framed by rich structuring tannins and ripe acids. This is a dramatic but nicely balanced Murgers from Hudelot-Noellat.

The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Murgers 1er Cru is blessed with a lovely bouquet of black cherries and touches of cassis and briar. Gorgeous. The palate is fresh and citrus-y on the entry. Taut tannins and a little compactness toward the finish, almost as if this was closing up. All the pleasure is loaded on the front end of this Les Murgers. Hopefully it will gain more flesh and depth on the finish by the time of bottling.

A very ripe nose features notes of plum, cassis, black cherry and soft earth influences. There is fine volume and acceptable verve to the concentrated and delicious flavors that display a touch of bitter cherry pit character on the ever-so-slightly warm finale. This is attractive but it would be fair to say that it's very 2018 in style.

Hudelot-Noëllat is no longer one of Burgundy’s hidden gems as word is well and truly out now on just how exceptional these wines are. Charles Van Canneyt runs this iconic family owned domaine based in Vougeot where he crafts elegant and classic wines from some of the region’s most prized vineyards. Staying true to tradition, Charles practices minimal intervention in the cellar along with limited new oak usage. His aim is to produce refined Burgundy with an emphasis on purity and finesse, all while letting the terroir shine.

An extremely fresh and bright nose is comprised mostly by red berry aromas that are in keeping with the equally bright, delicious and well-detailed flavors that conclude in a lightly austere and rustic finale. This refreshing effort should drink well after only a year or so of keeping. Drink through 2025+.

In cooler vintages, Lodestone appears to step up a notch. The lightest hue of the 3 single-site pinots. While the fruit is destemmed, there’s an attractive herbal, almost stemmy, character and it's a finer rendition overall. Light cherry accents – both sweet and tart – red roses, ferrous and earthy. It’s often a powerful, rich wine but not here, it feels lighter framed, with grainy tannins, lots of tangy acidity and plenty of refreshment. Drink by 2027.

    Notes from producer....
The fruit was harvested by hand on 18 March 2020, fermented under the action of indigenous yeasts, basket pressed on 10 April 2020 and, after twenty months in barrel (one quarter new), bottled on 2 November 2021.   Medium ruby in colour.  The intense and pure nose has black cherries and cassis with crushed nuts and an overtone of sage.  The luscious palate has flavours in the same fruity-nutty-herbal range and fine, soft drying tannins. A precise line of fine acidity drives the wine towards a long, flaring finish.  As with all three of these wines, the oak plays only a best-supporting role.

All 3 single-site pinots were made in ’20, but not the Estate blend, because no barrels were declassified and it was a low-yielding season. Hommage has turned out incredibly floral, with pink blossom and roses. A slight whiff of VA, menthol, morello and pink cherries and woodsy spices work across the barely medium-bodied palate. The tannins are lightly raspy, yet open-knit and there’s plenty of acidity. It needs hearty fare to show its best side. Drink by 2028.

Interestingly, the charcuterie quality is present from start to finish.

If you’re expecting a structured and powerful Garamond, which is usually part of its makeup, 2020 didn’t deliver such a wine. Instead, this is an elegant, finer rendition, led by tangy acidity rather than its tannins, which are grainy yet defined. Lots of perfume from native mint, eucalyptus, baking spices and pepper, to flavours of blood orange, chinotto, black cherries and Campari. Drink by 2028.

For me, a palate needs four things in balanced proportion a la the terroir of the vineyard concerned:   pure, well-defined and ripe aromas and flavours; linearity, precision and order (structure); a pleasing texture in the fine satin-silk range; and a clean, ever-lingering and preferably flaring finish.  This kind of palate combines smell, taste, feel, line and length in a carefully balanced frame. I find these qualities in this Garamond. It is bright ruby in colour.  The dreamy, other-worldly, red-rose of a nose has raspberries, currents, cherries and almonds with flowers and talc.  The medium-weight palate has pure and intense flavours of all of the above plus a texture of silk that comes from finely-grained tannins.  Racy acidity drives this energetic wine to an ultra-long, widely-flaring, contemplative coda. Made by Kevin Bell. MV6 pinot. Matured for 20 months in oak. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. Single vineyard release named after the famous font. Garamond. It’s a beautiful word in itself.
Elegant power. It looks light but it has presence. It presents a myriad of autumnal, spice-strewn flavours but the fruit is ripe and racy. A spot of reduction, a slip of smoky oak, undergrowth notes beavering away beneath. This is impressive. There’s a macerated feel to the fruit but there’s still a great deal going on. This is arguably the best Garamond I’ve tasted. In the tannin I see finesse. Excellent signs everywhere. Drink 2020-2028.

A blend focusing on the township of Seville East in the Upper Yarra Valley but also incorporating fruit from Coldstream and Yarra Glen. A small percentage of whole bunches. A bright, ruby red. An aromatic bouquet of ripe red cherries, wild strawberries and a little briar. Just as good on the medium-bodied, crunchy-fruited and energetic palate. Pliant tannins round out a wine that will still be drinking well a decade from now. Drink by 2033.

Like the Chardonnay, fruit is sourced from around the valley and is a mix of clones. Its bouquet is distinct as soon as you open the bottle, with some ripe confectionery notes which fall away to reveal a pretty and refined base of fruit. Black and red cherry mix with strawberry and raspberry, with the flowery goodness of violets and a touch of stemmy savouriness appearing after some air. On the palate, there is pronounced fruit sweetness, giving the wine much vitality, with some tongue-tingling minerality adding some more depth. Another very enjoyable wine from winemaker Anthony Fikkers.

Mainly whole berries with around 10% whole bunches. Matured in French oak (10% new) for 10 months. A medium, bright cherry red. An immediately attractive bouquet offering an array of spices to go with the sour cherry and raspberry fruit aromas. Even better on the energetic palate, which is medium bodied, with both bright acidity and fine-grained tannins giving the wine freshness and structure. Definitely over-delivers at this modest price point for good quality Yarra Pinot. Drink by 2028.

The label has been (slightly) redesigned, though I don’t yet have access to the new image. The quality is still at the same level. 15% whole bunches. Sourced from a range of Yarra Valley sites.
It gets the balance right between elegance/finesse and having enough flesh to satisfy. It just feels right. Strawberry and stewed cherry flavours with sweet spice, woodsmoke and (modest) deli meat. It’s lifted and perfumed, especially once it’s had a chance to breathe, and its fine-grained tannin too has been managed to perfection. So it sucks you straight in but it then has the structure and form to impress beyond the immediate. I’m scoring it 92, I could easily be 93, but my main ‘score’ is to recommend that at $32 this is a definite ‘buy’. Drink 2022-2028+

It has zebras on the label, which I like very much.
Wheaty, spicy, a little smoky and firm in structure, brooding even. Red fruits, light chalky texture, bony but flavoursome, drives through the mouth, and finishes dry and long. Savoury style, and quite serious, yet fun to drink.

Shiraz and pinot noir duke it out for top red wine spot in Beechworth and they're hard to separate, especially in a year like 2022. Pinot shines here, quite literally, in glistening red cherry hues. The scent is aromatic and sweet in wild raspberry, cherry, plum, clove. Combines a purity of fruit with a touch of earthy, leafy savouriness, bringing added depth to the palate. Structurally firm and well-textured, it remains fresh, full of energy. It should do well in the journey ahead. Drink by 2030.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.

Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
