While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

Another year of small yields from a cool season, with a dry finish from January to harvest. Look, it’s 13.2% alcohol, well that really took me by surprise!
Lovely amount of perfume this year, in with red cherry and other red fruits, some cinnamon, almond, vanilla, and assorted spice from oak, subtle earthiness with a little dried herb too. It’s medium-bodied, kind of light, but gee, there’s no shortage of depth and concentration either. It has bright acidity, fine tannin grip, and a lively finish of excellent length. It took me one smell, and one sip, to know that I really like this vintage. A little more fine-boned. Classic styling, if you will. Drink 2024-2033+

I could write a tasting note that goes something like this: brightly coloured, there are aromas of small red fruits, gentle spice and some rose petal. And that the light- to medium-bodied and mouth-filling palate finishes with just the right amount of silky tannins. Or, I can simply say that the number one contender for Australia's best value pinot is in no danger of relinquishing the title! Drink by 2028.

It’s a while since GW’s let me review the ‘standard’ Hoddles Creek Estate Pinot Noir. In fact the 2014 seems to be the last one I had first crack at. It’s good to be back, on the marks, live. This wine, as we all know at The Winefront, is a modern legend. One day, one fine day, far in the future, this label should win a medal for Services to Australian Pinot Noir.
I wrote the above, I should add, after having tasted the wine. Truth is that before I started tasting it I was a touch nervous; the Hoddles wines are released young, almost rudely so, and in general need a little time to both sort themselves out and reveal themselves properly; reviewing them when they’re still super-young isn’t the easiest task, oftentimes. But, alas, not so this year.
This release jumps out at you. It’s fragrant and lively, blessed with bell-clear varietal fruit flavour, blossomy, tannic and sure. Woodsmoke and oranges, red cherry and woodsy spice, mint and meat. It feels dry and tight but there’s enough here to suggest generosity; this release feels more eager to please than usual, and yet it still feels tight, and the lines of acidity are perfectly threaded. In short, if ever there was a no-brainer Hoddles Creek pinot release, this one is it. Drink 2022-2030.

There’s a darkness, an earthiness, to the Pinot Noir releases from HCE in 2019. But I like that, just like I like the rosy pretty red fruited ones too. The alcohol percentage for Hoddles Creek Pinot seems to be 13.2% every vintage, as a side note. 20% whole bunch in this one.Dark red fruit, spice, earth, mint and dried flowers. It’s medium-bodied, but dense and firm in tannin, cherries and dried herb mainly, a bit of gravel and bright sappy and ‘mineral’ feeling acidity. Lot’s of grip and oomph, though not heavy. Spice and perfume bobs up on a firm long finish. Needs a bit of extra time this vintage. Drink 2022 - 2030+

It just came in the door, and reviewed within about five minutes. I can tell when a courier is anywhere near, because our dog goes into meltdown. Loves a delivery man (they are so rarely women, I note).
Nose in glass, and first impression is that this is a great vintage for HCE Pinot. Darker fruit profile, but with raspberry in there too, plenty of spice and perfume of dried rose, some lead pencil and cedar happening. It’s medium-bodied, savoury and fruit sweet, almost earthy, and packed with gravelly tannin and bright cherry acidity. The finish is long, spicy, dried herb and cherry-laden, beautiful tannin pushing it out. It puts me in mind of 2013 with its grip and deep fruit. It’s bloody outstanding. Drink : 2020 - 2030

When you have a vineyard site as good as Hoddles Creek Estate, and lavish care on it as well as ever, the result is preordained. This is an elegant, spice-infused wine with tannins providing the boundary fence, fruit filling the centre. The length and balance can't be faulted. Drink by 2030.

Red fruits, hazelnut and spice, floral perfume. It’s light and perhaps a diffuse, at least as a young wine, but does deliver flavour, fine emery tannin, mouth-perfume, with a savoury autumnal finish of good length. Almost certain to build complexity and depth. Drink 2021-2029.

Often quite reticent in their youth, these wines build up with time in bottle, or to a lesser extent, in glass. Tasting this one after it has been open for a day.
Perfumed, slight mintiness over red berries and red cherry, mineral/earth stuff, spiced biscuit. Light to medium-bodied, well-defined, bright and fine, succulence of fruit but with restraint, super fine emery tannin, spiced fresh strawberry and earthy bunch in the aftertaste, which is pretty long. Understated, but confident. Drink 2022-2030+

Normal transmission has been resumed, in that it’s me reviewing these wines once more, rather than CM. Maybe not ideal to be working on Anzac Day, though I’ve had a few Anzac biscuits to get my eye in. I do love the odd biscuit and piece of cake as I get older; one of those things. Anyway, this is a more concentrated plum/cherry expression of HCE Pinot in 2022, over some of the more red-fruited, lighter expressions.
Cherry, plum, baking spice, a little more earthy – more bass than treble here – some vanilla, thyme and mint in the mix too. It’s full of juicy red and black fruited flavour, a slight orange peel amaro twist through it, a pleasing amount of grainy/silty tannin, kind of autumnal too, a little rhubarb and spice, with a juicy and sappy finish of excellent length. Lots of flavour and a good amount of chewy texture. It’s balance of finesse and bouncy Pinot character should pretty much satisfy every drinker. Drink 2024-2030+

Hoddles Creek was established by the D’Anna family in 1997 when they planted a vineyard on the family’s property. The estate has since become synonymous with producing some the best value examples of Pinot Noir & Chardonnay in Australia. The Premier (1er) Yarra Valley range features a Burgundian-looking label to signify wines made from the property’s best blocks for each varietal.
Winemaking for the Pinot Noir is all about tannin development, with careful monitoring every 6 hours to ensure the correct path is taken regarding optimum tannin extraction. The fruit for this wine comes from the south-facing, Top Paddock Vineyard. The advantage of having the block facing south is slower, more even ripening (due to the cooler exposure), which means that a good portion of ripe stalks can be included as whole bunches in the ferment. The wine matures for eighteen months in cask and is not filtered, fined or stabilized before bottling.
Other Reviews....
It’s from a single block and it’s fermented with 20% whole bunches.
I guess it fits into the ‘pretty red-fruited’ category though there are ample bass notes here and there’s plenty of toasty, smoky, chicory-like influence too. Complexity, it has plenty. Red cherries, both stewed and fresh, with Campari-like herb influences before cedar wood, sweet/earthen spice and assorted roasted nuts. The tannin profile of this wine, ultra fine-grained and assertive at once, is about as good as it gets – not only does it tie everything together but it somehow helps to extend the palate yet more. This is not an obvious wine, it takes time to build and unfold, but it’s a top-notch one. Drink 2022 - 2030+

Well, this is quite a contrast to the robust 2019. More like 2012 or even 2005 here, maybe.
Strawberry and spice, almond, mint and floral perfume. Light and fresh, plenty of crunch and vivacity, a sappy feel, though flavour is ripe and emphatically red-fruited. Fine dusting of tannin, a slight earthiness, and a bright long finish offering bite and ‘mineral’ feel. Comes up in the glass very well, and I’d say it will perform really well with cellaring. Unfortunately, there were no wines made in 2019 due to the widespread bush fires in Tasmania at the time. Thankfully this was not the case in 2020 as the winery was able to produce some much sought-after wine.
Notes from the winery....
Home Hill Flagship wine displays concentrated fruit that combines with chary French oak to deliver a seductive & age worthy Pinot Noir. The Kelly’s Reserve Pinot Noir is made from a blend of the top barrels from the vintage, always with one small section of the vintage at its core. Deep dark ruby with purple hues in colour with aromas of violets, cherries, sandalwood and liquorice that jump out of the glass. Uplifting fruit has a great combination with the French oak to give mushroom and earthy characteristics on the mid palate. This wine has good texture, lovely balance, round tannins, big mouthfeel and a long silky after taste that goes on forever. This Pinot Noir has the capacity to be cellared for up to 15 years. Picked on the 20th of April 2020. Cold year. Handpicked and pruned. -

Matured for 15 months in French oak the fruit for Kelly’s Reserve is sourced from the middle 12 rows of the vineyard which have had their trellising system modified to reduce the yields as much as possible and in turn produce fruit with greater concentration.
Semi translucent bright dark red core with a light crimson red hue. Fragrant yet refined aromatics of red cherries intermixed with dried herbs, violets and a hint of sour cherries sit over subtle stalky cedar, some meatiness and spice. Powerful and deep yet graceful the palate is blessed with a very supple, elegant mouthfeel and flavours of ripe dark cherries subtlety infused with anise. Showing great finesse and harmony the primary fruit flavours are underpinned by some gamey meatiness, faint toasty cedar, subtle dried herb infusions and spice. Silky, perfectly integrated tannins. The colour is little, if any, different to its Estate sibling, but the bouquet has more fragrant and varietally pure fruit. The palate unexpectedly reverses the plot, being more complex, more foresty and less fruity. There is presumably more whole bunch use, but the wine's intensity draws saliva from the mouth. Deliciously fruited, supple and expansive - In a word ‘Moreish’

2019 Hospice De Beaune (Coche-Dury) Pommard Cuvee Suzanne ChaudronBurgundy, FRANCEReduced from $1,150.00$899. 00Bottle$10788.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkSince the first edition in 1859, the annual Hospices de Beaune auction has become a barometer for the strength of the new vintage in Burgundy, and is now the most famous charity auction in the world of wine. Over the years the charitable cause was given vineyards among other donations, and auctions off barrels from these holdings during a extended celebration in Burgundy over the third weekend of November.
When the Cyrot-Chaudron couple left vineyards to the Hospices de Beaune in 1979, the gift included several plots of very ancient vines. Over 40% of the vines were planted prior to 1959, with the oldest block dating from 1910. More than a third of the Cuvée comes from the southeast facing, low-yield hillsides of Les Petits Noizons, which dominate Pommard from the north. A select few barrels from 2019 vintage were purchased by the prestigious Domaine Coche-Dury for elevage in their cellars, a program they have invested heavily in recent years.
Other Reviews....
A slightly denser purple with some muscle to the fruit. This is a typically powerful dense Pommard with some tannins, ripe however, to bring up the finish. In fact it could be a textbook example, ideal for lovers of a classical Pommard. There is a pleasing weight of dark berry fruit returning at the back behind the well ripened tannins.

Ripe, fresh and airy aromas include those of both red and dark fruit trimmed in soft earth. The 2022 village Chambolle from Hudelot-Noëllat is delicious with its deep colour and prominent black plum and cassis fruit aromas touched with lavender. The texture has rewarding freshness and a subtle but sustaining tannic grip that draws it to a lingering finish. The village-level Vosne from Hudelot-Noëllat is perhaps more attractive than ever, with a forward, prominent blackberry aroma and notes of violets, ginger, and earth. The wine has a silky texture and great finesse on the palate, along with an immensely appealing sweet character to the fruit. The grapes come from Basses Maizières, not far from his Suchots. This exquisite wine has intense red and black fruit aromas with a floral edge and an almost salty savoury intensity. The texture is silky but tightly wound. It is commonly thought that the upper part of Suchots is superior, but this version gives that idea the lie. All the grapes for this cuvée are still destemmed: 'I'm a classic guy,' according to winemaker Charles van Canneyt. His Charmes is produced from two parcels that total 0.21 hectares. He extracts carefully, using a mixture of punching down and pumping over before ageing in cask (primarily used). This wine is superbly silky and seamless, long but not heavy, and distinguished by a marvellously forward blackberry and pomegranate fruit aroma touched with earth and spice. This immense Clos de Vougeot shows power without astringency. The grapes are from the domaine's 0.70 hectares near the château in the spots known as Chioures and La Garenne. The carefully sorted grapes are mostly destemmed and fermented on native yeasts; the wines are currently ageing in cask (half new) and will be bottled after two winters without fining or filtration. Drink 2025-2060.

Charles Curtis MW - DecanterA beautifully layered and fresh nose offers up notes of essence of plum, rose petal, anise and hints of wood toast, forest floor and the sauvage. Once again there is a lovely and caressing mouthfeel to the medium weight and tautly muscular flavors that possess good delineation and a touch of minerality that adds a touch of lift to the firm, serious and sneaky long finish where a bit of youthful austerity eventually emerges. Drink through 2037+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2022 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is a deep, broad-shouldered wine, unwinding in the glass with aromas of sweet red berries, incense and spices complemented by hints of potpourri and sweet soil tones. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it's lively and youthfully taut, with everything required to reward a bit of patience.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 19, 2024)The 2022 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a tightly wound, mineral-driven bouquet that needs time to gradually unfurl. Black rather than red fruit here. The medium-bodied palate has sappy red fruit, fine depth and good grip. A more sinewy Clos Vougeot that should stand it in good stead for long-term aging. Excellent. Drink 2026-2048.

Neal Martin - VinousA vivid mid purple. The bouquet suggests some concentration but a youthful hiding of the detail. On the palate, this is clearly extremely well-constructed and the deep red fruit fills the mouth. Tannins are fine boned, and there is enough acidity. Let this age quietly for a decade and a fine Clos V will emerge. Drink from 2032-2040.

Immediately impressive with a beguiling combination of fruit expression, silkiness and length. The nose boasts raspberry, bramble and kirsch with notes of violets, earth and smoke. The texture is deceptively silky, and with time the firm tannins and rich extract make themselves felt and lead into a lingering finish. The grapes come from 0.3ha in Les Richebourgs, next to DRC – they are mostly destemmed and gently fermented on native yeasts before ageing in cask. Enormous ageing potential. Drink 2028-2080.

Charles Curtis MW - DecanterAn even spicier nose reflects notes of exotic black tea, dark cherry, incense, hoisin, plum liqueur and a broad range of floral elements. The gorgeously textured medium weight flavors are once again not especially dense yet manage to display impressive power on the dusty, compact and hugely long finish, indeed this offers the best persistence in the entire range. In sum, this is stunningly good with the development potential to match. Drink through 2037+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2022 Richebourg Grand Cru is brilliant, mingling aromas of dark berries and plums with notions of blood orange, rose petals, exotic spices and smoke in an incipiently complex mélange. Full-bodied, deep and complete, it's seamless and multidimensional, its layered core of fruit almost entirely concealing its ample endowment of sweet, powdery tannin.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 19, 2024)The 2022 Richebourg Grand Cru has red and black fruit on the nose, with pressed iris flower, undergrowth and a little iodine. Fine definition, yet tight. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins and gentle grip. It has more depth than the Romanée-Saint-Vivant, but this clams up towards the finish and leaves you wondering if there's more. I will be prudent for now. Drink 2030-2060.

Neal Martin - VinousThis vineyard tends to make fuller and richer wines than Romanée St-Vivant but it doesn’t show in the colour. The bouquet, though, is another matter: magically perfumed, an imperial majesty that fills every part of the mouth, luxurious but never vulgar, swamping the present and entirely necessary structure, just a point of youthful bitters alongside the acidity at the back. Very grand indeed! An extra dimension. Drink from 2035.

A fresh and quite peppery nose speaks mostly of red currant and earth. The delicious and wonderfully vibrant lighter weight flavors possess fine definition on the lingering finale that just makes one feel like drinking it. This is built on its fruit but no less interesting for it. Drink through 2023+.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 01, 2023)The 2021 Bourgogne Rouge, which had been racked into tank the previous week, has a gentle bouquet that unfolds in the glass, with blackberry and mulberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a sappy entry, fine acidity, plus a sour cherry/prune note on the finish. Fine. Drink 2024-2030.

2021 Hudelot-Noellat Vosne-Romanee Les Suchots Premier CruBurgundy, FRANCE$760. 00Bottle$9120.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
A fresh and exuberantly spicy nose reflects notes of plum and various red berries along with herbal tea hints that include jasmine and orange peel. As is usually the case, there is good size, weight and richness to the caressing medium-bodied flavors that possess a velvety mid-plate along with excellent depth and persistence on the somewhat raspy and overtly austere finale that may be too much for some. I suspect that this mildly tangy effort will better harmonize with time in bottle. Drink through 2031+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2021 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots is one of the more reserved wines in the cellar this year, unwinding in the glass with notes of red berries, peonies, sweet spices and vine smoke. Medium to full-bodied, ample and lively, with powdery tannins and good tension, it will merit a bit of patience.
91-93 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 01, 2023)The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru has a pure and quite sensual bouquet with more complexity and fruité than the Beaumonts. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, taut and linear with a slightly candied and persistent finish. This is one of the best 2021s from Hudelot-Noëllat. Drink 2026-2045.

Neal Martin - VinousA fine brisk mid purple. Rather a darker leafier nose, along with some new oak. This is a little bit more backward, with deep fruit and some pepper, not quite ready to express itself. Drink from 2027-2033.

Once again there is lovely freshness to the cool and airy aromas of red cherry, dark raspberry and spice. I very much like the texture of the mineral-driven, chiseled and vibrant medium-bodied flavors that culminate in a dusty bitter pit fruit-inflected finish that offers excellent depth and persistence for a villages-level wine. One to strongly consider. Drink from 2026+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Village wafts from the glass with aromas of cherries and raspberries mingled with warm spices and rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, rich and velvety, with lively acids, powdery tannins and a perfumed finish, it's seamless and complete.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)Glowing black purple. A rich heady dense raspberry fruit, this has everything without being too exaggerated, some tannins some acidity, a wealth of powerful black raspberry fruit, trying to be floral too.

Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundyThere is a silky, sweet cherry and blackberry fruit, with a lifted floral note plus a hint of earthy minerality. On the palate there is impressive concentration and length for a village wine. Very well done. For me, this is the pick of the village-level wines in the cellar in 2020. It is blended across 11 different parcels representing 1.85ha in total; it's a snapshot in a bottle of Chambolle-Musigny. It was picked at 13% alcohol this year (no small feat), and vinified as 20% whole-cluster before ageing with just 15% new casks. Drink 2025 - 2040.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.
Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
