While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

Once again the wood treatment is perceptible though it remains sufficiently subtle to not interfere with the appreciation of the very ripe aromas of roasted plum, cassis, violet and lovely array of exotic spice elements. The surprisingly full-bodied flavors are bigger than what is typical for RSV yet though the extra size and weight does not significantly compromise the refinement of the serious, mouthcoating and lingering finish where the only nit is noticeable warmth. While not quite as structured as the Bressandes, this too is going to need extended cellaring to arrive at its peak. Drink 2034+.

Here too moderate wood influence is present on the mentholated and more elegant aromas of red and dark raspberry, spice and violet. The medium-bodied flavors are not as dense, but they are notably finer before concluding in a dusty, firm, youthfully austere and more structured finale. This possesses excellent upside development potential but it's clear that most of 20 years is going to be necessary to fully resolve the tannins. Drink 2036+.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)Plump charming deep red purple. Headier than the Le Corton, perhaps a little more obviously ripe, plump dark raspberry style. The barrel is present but tamed, drier tannins at the finish though. Fair length, and the fruit comes back behind.

As is almost always the case, this is more aromatically elegant with its pure and cool essence of dark raspberry and cherry aromas that are well-nuanced by wisps of earth, spice and rose petal. The sleekly muscular broad-shouldered flavors possess excellent concentration and plenty of sappy dry extract that coats the palate and buffers the markedly firm and sneaky long finale where a trace of warmth appears. If you have the patience this should make for a terrific wine in time.

At present this isn't quite as fresh as the Gruenchers though it's otherwise aromatically similar. By contrast, there is even better energy to the beautifully delineated flavors that flash more evident minerality on the wonderfully complex and lingering finish. As is usually the case, the mid-palate isn't quite as dense, but it compensates by being finer and more sophisticated plus the supporting tannins are a bit firmer. This too is really lovely juice. Drink 2031+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundPerfect fresh mid purple colour with a bouquet to match. The petit Vougeot has kept its balance better than the Gruenchers. Even so this is headily ripe fruit. There is some black cherry mixed in with fresher red fruit notes, a little bit of fresh peach, some mandarin peel. Plenty going on as sweetness fights with savoury, However I really like the overall balance.

Spicier if equally restrained aromas are comprised mostly of wild red and dark berries plus whiffs of earth, humus, anise, violet and gentle wood. The sleekly textured and tautly muscular flavors are concentrated and powerful and the intensity is most impressive as it does a slow build from the mid-palate culminating in a superbly complex and well-balanced finale. This youthfully austere and beautifully harmonious effort, in fact the word Zen comes to mind, is also going to require extended cellaring in order to realize its full, and considerable, potential. Neal Martin - VinousVery reductive. Dense, almost sombre purple. A little toastiness too. Will rack end November to bottle Feb/March, and it needs the racking. Sweetly ripe, very dense, dark cherry here, not too cooked but it is quite a monster on the dark side. Just give it twenty years… Just a little fresher at the finish.

Discreet wood influence surrounds the notably ripe and fresh aromas of cassis, plum liqueur, earth and evident sauvage wisps. There is excellent richness and volume to the suave, round and seductive mid-palate of the broad-shouldered flavors that contrast markedly with the very firmly structured, youthfully austere and impressively persistent finish. As is usually the case, this is very compact and backward and a wine that will require extended aging to reach its peak. Drink 2036+.

This is heady enough but showing plums not prunes. It will be cleaned up by racking and I suspect that this is going to be very good.

Opening in the glass with aromas of plums and cassis mingled with subtle hints of peonies and spices, the 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, with an ample core of fruit, succulent acids and fine, powdery tannins that gently assert themselves on the finish. William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Oct 2021)The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru has an elegant bouquet of pure dark cherries and light loamy aromas; there is an admirable sense of cohesion here. This too flirts with volatile acidity on the cooler though still liqueur-like aromas both red and dark pinot fruit that is laced with hints of violet, anise and earth. The velvety, round and overtly powerful medium weight plus flavors also possess good power and punch on the lightly stony and slightly warm finale. This is not quite so over-the-top like the Vaucrains though it is still impressively robust.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges 1er Cru, which was the first vineyard to be picked, has retained the precocious bouquet of blueberry and cassis, and strong violet scents emerge with time; you might describe this as "punchy." The palate is fleshy and generous, although it does not comes close to the precision and terroir expression exhibited by the 2019, which already has its nose in front.

The cough drop and spice-inflected black fruit aromas flirt with volatile acidity. The rich, bold, powerful and full-bodied flavors possess excellent mid-palate concentration before culminating in a very firm, rustic and serious finish where a touch of warm emerges. This robust effort is vaguely syrah-like and while it is perfectly good in its fashion, I can't say that it appeals to me.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Vaucrains 1er Cru a floral bouquet of violet-infused black and red fruit, touches of potpourri emerging with aeration. Flecks of dark chocolate toward the finish just denude it of the same precision as the Les Pruliers at the moment.

Neal Martin - VinousPicked in the morning and then in the afternoon the pickers checked bunch by bunch to remove any damaged grapes. Dense purple, veering to black with a hyper-concentrated nose, but it is still balanced. A huge sweet dark fruit mouthful with just a trace of the characteristic hillside austerity, but rather overwhelmed by the richness of the fruit. I think it will become more Vaucrains with age. Gouges noted that in 2015 the blend for this wine contains 40% from the 1er Chênes Carteaux so that there could be sufficient volume for their various markets. A background application of wood frames a similar if more complex and elegant array of ripe aromas. The sleek, round and delicious medium-bodied flavors possess lovely definition before terminating in a saline-inflected finish that is notably finer than it usually is. This offers simply terrific quality for its level and is highly recommended.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2015 Nuits Saint Georges Village, a blend on different small blocks between the south and middle of the appellation, offers a fragrant, well-defined bouquet with red cherries and cranberry fruit. There is impressive mineralité and transparency considering this is a "mere" village cru. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, tart cherries mixed with bergamot and hints of early grey. I appreciate the complexity here and it marks a significant step up from the Bourgogne Rouge.

The 2014 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos des Porrets Saint Georges, a monopole of the domaine, has a crisp leafy bouquet with autumn leaves and touches of flint coming through with aeration. The palate is well balanced with fine tannin, a certain brightness to the fruit here - resolutely "classic" in style, a "cool" NSG but with very fine delineation on the finish. Not a long-term proposition perhaps, but a well-crafted drop of wine that will repay time in the cellar.

Neal Martin - Robert Parker Wine Advocate #222 (Dec 2015)Once again reduction dominates. By contrast there is a really lovely freshness and vibrancy to the intense and focused middle weight plus flavors that culminate in a powerful, rustic and beautifully persistent finish. This is a classic Nuits that is going to require close to a decade to be approachable and should reward 12 to 15 years of cellaring.

Allen Meadows - burghound.comBright, deep red. A step up in stony pungency and aromatic lift from the Chênes Carteaux, offering perfumed scents and flavors of black cherry, violet, rose petal and spices. The 2016 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru les Vaucrains was cropped at a paltry 11 hectoliters per hectare due to the frost. I have to admit that the aromatics lacked the natural harmony and cohesion of the Les Pruliers and the Porrets, the fruit perhaps a little subdued by some reduction. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, quite fleshy with more red fruit than black. The backbone feels less strong here and as such I suspect this will be more approachable than its siblings.

Neal Martin - Wine Advocate #234 (Dec 2017)Healthy dark red. Slightly medicinal aromas of black cherry and chocolate are complicated by a whiff of animal fur. Plush and fine-grained, offering lovely pliancy to the flavors of dark berries, chocolate and tobacco; plumper than the Les Saint-Georges but without that wine's definition and cut. The very rich tannins coat the front teeth but this very ripe wine is already quite expressive.
92-94 points
Stephen Tanzer - VinousA brooding nose only reluctantly reveals notes of ripe and ultra-fresh dark currant, earth and a smoked game nuance. There is outstanding density to the powerful, robust and bold big-bodied flavors that possess seriously good concentration where the sap does a good job of buffering the very firm tannic spine shaping the superbly persistent finish. This is textbook Vaucrains and as such, it's going to need extended cellaring.

The 2016 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Saint Georges was cropped at just 12 hectoliters per hectare this vintage. Like the Les Vaucrains, I just felt that the aromatics were a tad subdued compared to Les Pruliers or Les Porrets. It is nicely defined but I would like more vigor. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannin, here the brightness and energy belatedly beginning to shine and it shows fine tension and elegance toward the finish. It is not the greatest Les Saint-Georges that Gouges will ever make, but it comes good at the end.

Neal Martin - Wine Advocate #234 (Dec 2017)Bright dark red. The most reduced of these 2016s on the nose today, offering scents of cherry, plum, licorice and mocha. Densely packed, fine-grained and sweet, showing terrific juicy cut and vinosity to its primary dark fruit, chocolate and violet flavors. Finishes with serious but essentially smooth tannins and rising purple fruits that saturate the mouth and leave the taste buds glistening. At once more refined and more powerful than the Vaucrains, this wine is built for a graceful evolution in bottle.

The age of the vines is quite diverse in this 1.8ha block, ranging from 20 to 80 years. It's a comparatively forward red, especially for a Nuits from the south side of the village. Notes of summer berries and tobacco pouch mingle appealingly on the nose and palate with supporting acidity and scented oak, 20% new.

The 2015 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru les Goulots is the first to be completely biodynamically farmed, although Florence told me that she only really noticed the difference apropos the color of the grapes in the 2016 vintage. A deft dollop of wood can be found on the spicier and more floral inflected nose of cassis, black pinot fruit and a suggestion of exotic tea. The relatively supple medium weight flavors possess only slightly better mid-palate density though the longer finish is noticeably more tightly wound. This should be excellent in time. Drink 2031+.

Very ripe aromas feature those of cassis, baked plum and soft spice wisps. The finer medium weight flavors possess very good density while flashing lovely minerality on the sappy, palate coating and youthfully austere finale. Drink 2026+.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.
Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
