Pinot Noir

While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Combe Aux Moines 1er Cru is tasted from the regular blend matured in oak, although readers should note that Fourrier is trialing some of this cuvée aged in amphora that may or may not be added. It has an attractive bouquet with vivacious Morello cherries, wild strawberry and orange rind aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe fruit, quite spicy with white pepper and touches of sage and oregano livening up the finish. It is already a very promising Gevrey, so I am fascinated to see whether the amphora component ends up being used.

A brooding nose consists of essence of plum and black cherry scents that are cut with notes of warm earth and the sauvage. The rich, medium-bodied and reasonably concentrated flavors possess good power and muscle on the mouth coating and serious finale. This well made and youthfully austere effort will need at least 5 to 7 years first and potentially reward up to 15.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes is showing beautifully in bottle, unwinding in the glass with scents of red cherries, raspberries, licorice, sweet soil tones and candied peel. Medium to full-bodied, supple and succulent, this Gevrey displays fine depth and concentration, its ample core of fruit underpinned by ripe, powdery tannins and lively acids.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes comes from 60-year old vines, 80-years in Champ Perrière (the minimum 40 years old). It has a clean, precise and very focused bouquet that gains intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, plenty of tart red fruit laced with cedar and graphite, leading to a pointed finish that feels persistent and classic in style. Excellent.

An elegant, airy and exceptionally fresh nose combines notes of cassis, black cherry, humus-inflected earth and a whiff of the sauvage. The medium weight flavors are at once tighter and more powerful if less refined, all wrapped in a youthfully austere, serious and impressively persistent finish. At least some patience will be required and this too is worthy of your interest.

A more deeply pitched and brooding nose only grudgingly reveals its aromas of cassis plum liqueur and pungent earth where the latter is also found on the vibrant and well-detailed big-bodied and tautly muscular flavors that deliver excellent depth and persistence. This is not as dense as the best in the range, but it should have no trouble amply repaying 12 to 15 years of bottle aging. Drink through 2032+.

Almost black in the middle. More a very intense sun dried dark cherry bouquet than raisins though. Pretty heady stuff either way round. Super sumptuous with this exciting red cherry fruit as well as black, and good acidity. It would be easily possible to fall in love with this, even if it is more powerful than I really like.

Here the nose if quite firmly reduced and revealing basically nothing today. This equally broad-shouldered flavors aren't quite as dense but they're certainly finer with good minerality and lift on the palate coating, balanced and beautifully persistent finale. Incredibly dense purple rather than black. While the bouquet follows a similar refrain to others in the Gouges 2020 line-up, there is more natural class from the vineyard site below. The clear limestone feel comes up through the middle and the palate is entirely red fruit. This one will really work. Refined tannins here. And the right acid balance. Excellent.

A more elegant nose features notes of herbal tea, red and dark currant and plenty of earth influences. The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Village was completely destemmed. I had trouble getting my head around the bouquet; it came across quite reduced (which is not uncommon with young Gouges wines), missing some delineation and a bit blocky. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and offers commendable vigor, moderate depth and candied red fruit laced with orange peel toward the finish. Hopefully the aromatics will knit together with bottle age. Drink 2022 - 2030.

Rich deep purple, this also has an almost too ripe nose but more in ultra ripe grapes rather than prunes, and the acidity is good. This will fill out nicely, there is already a wealth of flesh backed by a few tannins, so all should be fine. The Nuits-St-Georges certainly finishes on a fresher note.

This is also quite firmly reduced and unreadable at present. Otherwise there is equally good energy and delineation to the slightly more refined though still dense and muscular medium-bodied flavors that possess just a bit more depth on the similar finish that is muscular, serious and youthfully austere if not especially rustic. The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru was a little more reduced than Gouges’s other cuvées, opening gradually to reveal blackberry, wild hedgerow and incense. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, lithe and silky in the mouth, and fleshy with a judicious touch of white pepper toward the finish. The shortfall in grip and substance is sufficiently compensated with elegance. Drink 2024 - 2048.

Very reductive. Dense, almost sombre purple. A little toastiness too. Will rack end November to bottle Feb/March, and it needs the racking. Sweetly ripe, very dense, dark cherry here, not too cooked but it is quite a monster on the dark side. Just give it twenty years… Just a little fresher at the finish.

Discreet wood influence surrounds the notably ripe and fresh aromas of cassis, plum liqueur, earth and evident sauvage wisps. There is excellent richness and volume to the suave, round and seductive mid-palate of the broad-shouldered flavors that contrast markedly with the very firmly structured, youthfully austere and impressively persistent finish. As is usually the case, this is very compact and backward and a wine that will require extended aging to reach its peak. Drink 2036+.

Glowing exciting purple. The nose shows the oak a bit along with the power of the vintage. A huge luxury mouthful but very much in red fruit. This is heady enough but showing plums not prunes. It will be cleaned up by racking and I suspect that this is going to be very good.

Opening in the glass with aromas of plums and cassis mingled with subtle hints of peonies and spices, the 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, with an ample core of fruit, succulent acids and fine, powdery tannins that gently assert themselves on the finish. The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru has an elegant bouquet of pure dark cherries and light loamy aromas; there is an admirable sense of cohesion here. Fine glowing purple. A little pretty fruit on the nose but it is quite discreet. Softly ripe on the palate, rather gorgeous, begins discreetly then fills the mouth at the back, on the cusp of red and black, tannins seamlessly entwined, and very long.

This too flirts with volatile acidity on the cooler though still liqueur-like aromas both red and dark pinot fruit that is laced with hints of violet, anise and earth. The velvety, round and overtly powerful medium weight plus flavors also possess good power and punch on the lightly stony and slightly warm finale. This is not quite so over-the-top like the Vaucrains though it is still impressively robust.

The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges 1er Cru, which was the first vineyard to be picked, has retained the precocious bouquet of blueberry and cassis, and strong violet scents emerge with time; you might describe this as "punchy." The palate is fleshy and generous, although it does not comes close to the precision and terroir expression exhibited by the 2019, which already has its nose in front.

Deep dark colour, this is a brooding monster on the nose. Plump dark fruit, a little bit of blackberry, good weight, dancing energy behind too, fortunately. A rich and succulent but not too soft nose does start to emerge right at the finish.

The cough drop and spice-inflected black fruit aromas flirt with volatile acidity. The rich, bold, powerful and full-bodied flavors possess excellent mid-palate concentration before culminating in a very firm, rustic and serious finish where a touch of warm emerges. This robust effort is vaguely syrah-like and while it is perfectly good in its fashion, I can't say that it appeals to me.

The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Vaucrains 1er Cru a floral bouquet of violet-infused black and red fruit, touches of potpourri emerging with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied and quite edgy, with crisp, almost chalky tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Flecks of dark chocolate toward the finish just denude it of the same precision as the Les Pruliers at the moment.

Picked in the morning and then in the afternoon the pickers checked bunch by bunch to remove any damaged grapes. Dense purple, veering to black with a hyper-concentrated nose, but it is still balanced. A huge sweet dark fruit mouthful with just a trace of the characteristic hillside austerity, but rather overwhelmed by the richness of the fruit. I think it will become more Vaucrains with age. Lovely peppery finish.

Gouges noted that in 2015 the blend for this wine contains 40% from the 1er Chênes Carteaux so that there could be sufficient volume for their various markets. A background application of wood frames a similar if more complex and elegant array of ripe aromas. The sleek, round and delicious medium-bodied flavors possess lovely definition before terminating in a saline-inflected finish that is notably finer than it usually is. This offers simply terrific quality for its level and is highly recommended.

The 2015 Nuits Saint Georges Village, a blend on different small blocks between the south and middle of the appellation, offers a fragrant, well-defined bouquet with red cherries and cranberry fruit. There is impressive mineralité and transparency considering this is a "mere" village cru. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, tart cherries mixed with bergamot and hints of early grey. I appreciate the complexity here and it marks a significant step up from the Bourgogne Rouge.

(racked into tank and sulfured ten days before my November visit): Medium red. Rather cool aromas and flavors of redcurrant, cherry and coffee complicated by an element of smoky minerality. The 2014 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos des Porrets Saint Georges, a monopole of the domaine, has a crisp leafy bouquet with autumn leaves and touches of flint coming through with aeration. The palate is well balanced with fine tannin, a certain brightness to the fruit here - resolutely "classic" in style, a "cool" NSG but with very fine delineation on the finish. Not a long-term proposition perhaps, but a well-crafted drop of wine that will repay time in the cellar.

Once again reduction dominates. By contrast there is a really lovely freshness and vibrancy to the intense and focused middle weight plus flavors that culminate in a powerful, rustic and beautifully persistent finish. This is a classic Nuits that is going to require close to a decade to be approachable and should reward 12 to 15 years of cellaring.

Bright, deep red. A step up in stony pungency and aromatic lift from the Chênes Carteaux, offering perfumed scents and flavors of black cherry, violet, rose petal and spices. More rigorous in the mouth in the manner of Nuits-Saint-Georges from the south side of the village. Intense, solidly built wine with very good mouth coverage but no excess weight. Finishes with a restrained sweetness, a saline nuance and excellent length.

The 2016 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru les Vaucrains was cropped at a paltry 11 hectoliters per hectare due to the frost. I have to admit that the aromatics lacked the natural harmony and cohesion of the Les Pruliers and the Porrets, the fruit perhaps a little subdued by some reduction. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, quite fleshy with more red fruit than black. The backbone feels less strong here and as such I suspect this will be more approachable than its siblings.

Healthy dark red. Slightly medicinal aromas of black cherry and chocolate are complicated by a whiff of animal fur. Plush and fine-grained, offering lovely pliancy to the flavors of dark berries, chocolate and tobacco; plumper than the Les Saint-Georges but without that wine's definition and cut. The very rich tannins coat the front teeth but this very ripe wine is already quite expressive.

A brooding nose only reluctantly reveals notes of ripe and ultra-fresh dark currant, earth and a smoked game nuance. There is outstanding density to the powerful, robust and bold big-bodied flavors that possess seriously good concentration where the sap does a good job of buffering the very firm tannic spine shaping the superbly persistent finish. This is textbook Vaucrains and as such, it's going to need extended cellaring.

As is usually the case, this possesses the spiciest nose in the range and in 2017 is almost Vosne-like with its notes of plum, violet, pomegranate, sandalwood and Asian-style tea. The 2016 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Saint Georges was cropped at just 12 hectoliters per hectare this vintage. Like the Les Vaucrains, I just felt that the aromatics were a tad subdued compared to Les Pruliers or Les Porrets. It is nicely defined but I would like more vigor. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannin, here the brightness and energy belatedly beginning to shine and it shows fine tension and elegance toward the finish. It is not the greatest Les Saint-Georges that Gouges will ever make, but it comes good at the end.

Bright dark red. The most reduced of these 2016s on the nose today, offering scents of cherry, plum, licorice and mocha. Densely packed, fine-grained and sweet, showing terrific juicy cut and vinosity to its primary dark fruit, chocolate and violet flavors. Finishes with serious but essentially smooth tannins and rising purple fruits that saturate the mouth and leave the taste buds glistening. At once more refined and more powerful than the Vaucrains, this wine is built for a graceful evolution in bottle.

The age of the vines is quite diverse in this 1.8ha block, ranging from 20 to 80 years. It's a comparatively forward red, especially for a Nuits from the south side of the village. This hails from a mid-slope premier cru on the south side of Nuits and mixes clay and limestone soils within the Gouges' 3.7ha monopole. It’s an intense, aromatic and comparatively early-drinking style with some chalky freshness, medium-weight tannins and a hint of volatility.

Aromas of wild berries and forest floor mingle with notions of grilled game and raw cocoa in a complex bouquet, framed by cedary new oak, introducing the 2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos des Porrets Saint Georges. The wood treatment is a bit more evident than with any of the prior wines but not so much as to diminish the appeal of the earthier and cooler aromas of violet, plum and full-on sauvage notes. The delicious middle weight flavors are more refined than usual if not actually refined, all wrapped in detailed, focused and solidly powerful finish. The 2015 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru les Goulots is the first to be completely biodynamically farmed, although Florence told me that she only really noticed the difference apropos the color of the grapes in the 2016 vintage. It has a complex bouquet with redcurrant, cranberry and blood orange, very focused with deftly integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a little meatiness/dried blood developing underneath the carapace of black fruit, white pepper and Moroccan spice towards the finish. I love the tension here, not powerful but it just has the energy you would not anticipate from such a warm season.

While the wood treatment is a bit more evident it still remains a background element on the ripe but airy nose of spicy, floral and earthy red berry fruit aromas. The elevation of the vineyards is especially noticeable in a ripe vintage like 2015 as the medium weight flavors display plenty of minerality and a racy energy that carries over to the saline finish that is shaped by relatively fine-grained tannins. Lovely juice.

The 2015 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru les Champonnets saw 65% whole bunch fruit and 65% new oak, and saw no pigeage in this vintage—just remontage. It has a lovely oyster shell scent complementing the black fruit on the nose, beautifully defined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, supple in the mouth with crisp acidity, a perfect combination of power and refinement. What a gorgeous wine from the domaine! Dare I say that it must surely be the best they have produced from this premier cru vineyard.

Generous wood presently frames the earthy, spicy and overtly floral dark berry fruit nose that possesses a liqueur-like quality. There is excellent power to the broad-shouldered, rich and naturally sweet flavors that brim with palate coating dry extract on the sleek but quite serious finish where about the only nit is a hint of warmth. This very promising effort is very Gevrey in style and has the structure to prove it - patience required.

Unwinding in the glass with a deep, youthfully reserved bouquet of cassis, plums, rich soil tones, dark chocolate and warm spices, Lignier's 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Vieilles Vignes is medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with a deep and textural core, lively acids and a long, mineral finish. The 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis Vielles Vignes 1er Cru, which is sourced from Les Faconnières and Les Chenevery, includes 30% whole-bunch fruit and one-third new oak. It has an intense nose of blueberry, black cherries and wet limestone scents that seem to burst from the glass. The medium-bodied palate delivers supple tannins and a velvety smooth texture, with beautifully integrated oak toward the seductive finish. Gorgeous. Drink 2022 - 2045.

This is made from a single block but it straddles two vineyards, Faconnières and Chenevery. Delicious fresh pink purple, we were all impressed by its liveliness. One third whole bunches were used which may help, and the finish too shows a pleasingly crisp quality – and notable length.

The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from the Mazoyères side. It has a very attractive bouquet of black cherries, wild strawberry, cola and touches of brown spices. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, the 30% whole bunch lending a subtle earthiness on the midpalate, although I would like a little more substance to show on the finish. Domaine Hubert Lignier is one of Burgundy’s finest addresses, producing wines that show profound depth, complexity, and structure with capacity for wonderful development in the cellar. Winemaking is quite traditional, with grapes being de-stemmed and fermented in open-top cement tanks with natural yeasts. Elevage is around 18 months for the Bourgogne and village wines, while the premier and grand cru wines remain in barrel for 20-24 months. All wines are bottled without fining or filtration.

Here there is that peculiar type of reduction that the Burgundians refer to as bourgeon de cassis. By contrast there is good verve and a really lovely texture to the nicely voluminous flavors that display noticeable rusticity on the youthfully austere, firm and lingering finish. Like several wines in the range, this will need to add depth but if it does, it could be really quite lovely. Drink through 2030+.

Half a hectare, mostly in Sur Lavelle along with a few rows in Barbières and Vignes Rondes. 10 barrels this year. This cuvée will be just Sur Lavelle from 2021 with the rest going into the village wine. Fine mid purple, barely reduced, a little bit of blackcurrant leaf maybe. A certain sucrosity on the palate but this is a Monthelie which will give a lot of pleasure. 13.7% alcohol.

Ripe and brooding aromas grudgingly display notes of poached plum, spice, a variety of floral elements and earth that are trimmed in admirably discreet wood. This slightly south facing vineyard is being farmed biodynamically and in 2020 produced 5.5. barrels in half a hectare. Rich deep purple, the nose is a little bit less accessible, a little bit stricter, than La Riotte, offering some blackcurrant and dark raspberry, then packs a real punch at the back, with still darker fruit, pierced by a saline note at the crunchy finish. Quite different in character all the way through. 13.85% alcohol.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Combottes 1er Cru is located just under Clos de la Roche but on free-draining sandier soils. This is one cuvée where I feel that the aromatics suggest some over-maturity, light tinned prune notes tincturing the red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet candied entry, kirsch and orange zest, pretty on the finish but missing the intellect of other vintages of Combottes that I have encountered from Lignier over the years. Planted 1957. 0.15ha has given two barrels which is a bit miserly. Sandy supple soil, Rich mid purple, dances across the palate, a touch of menthol here, brisk red fruit otherwise, quite ripe but picked in good time.

From a small parcel near the Clos de la Roche in this premier cru nestled amid the grands crus. The vines were planted in 1957 in thin soils and produce a wine of intense concentration. Medium deep and bright purple. As always has the slightly coffee torrefaction nose but with pretty red fruit beneath. Juicy on the palate, at the front then a little more austere behind. But this is one of the more attractive versions I have had here. This lovely, exuberant Bonnes-Mares shows ripe dark fruit aromas of mulberry and plum and hints of violet, dark chocolate, and earth. The texture is substantial but not astringent, with richness but no heaviness. A bigger wine than the Musigny, but not awkward in any way. Mugnier’s nearly ten-hectare monopole at the southern extreme of Prémeaux-Prissey has suffered in recent years: hail in 2018, coulure in 2019, drought in 2020, and frost in 2021. It has produced a bit more than half a normal harvest this year, but what is left is lovely indeed, with lush, pretty aromas of raspberry with floral notes and a delicate, supple texture on the palate that is ethereal yet oddly persistent. The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Les Athets reveals aromas of sweet raspberries, orange rind, rose petals and musk. Medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated and precise, it's lively and penetrating, concluding with a chalky finish. This derives from a precocious site below Beaux Bruns and Aux Echanges.

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Les Athets is quite backward on the nose with blackberry, undergrowth and touches of ink coming through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, sorbet-fresh with veins of orange zest and quince that enliven the finish. Quite Vosne-like in style. Give this 3-4 years in bottle. Drink 2025-2037.

Bright dense purple, showing the excellent colour saturation of the vintage. This is pretty powerful but has not lost its Chambolle character and has kept fine tannins with a fresh crunch to finish. Cherry and raspberry notes in the fruit profile, good length.

Black color. Here the nose is sufficiently reduced to impede an assessment though there is a lovely sense of verve and freshness to the velvety and delicious medium-bodied flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract that imparts a lovely texture to the dusty, serious and well-balanced finale. Very fine quality. Drink from 2028+.

From a site below Les Suchots, the 2020 Vosne-Romanée Vigneux offers up notes of rose petals, spiced plums and berries. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and enveloping, it's bright and fleshy, concluding with a saline finish.

The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Vigneux, which Tardy mentioned tends to producer lower natural acidity, actually had better than average acidity in this vintage. This has an open-knit, well-defined bouquet with slightly minty red fruit. The palate is well balanced with juicy tannins, not complex, maybe a little attenuated towards the finish, but there is fine freshness here. Drink over the next 6-8 years. Drink 2023-2032.

Almost black purple in colour with purple edge. A rather riper nose, nearly cooked cherries but actually still very attractive. Gorgeous fruit on the palate, fully ripe raspberries, tannins fully integrated and not too much acidity, very well balanced and extremely long. Quite floral.

The 2015 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Aux Argillas has a lovely oyster shell tinged bouquet with joyous black cherry and bilberry aromas. I appreciate the precision of this Nuits Saint-Georges, hints of violets emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a touch of orange sorbet infusing the dark cherry fruit with a saline touch on the finish. Keeping its cards close to its chest, I suspect it will offer much more with two or three years in bottle.

A mildly toasty nose still allows the cool, pure and ripe wild red berry aromas that are liberally laced with earth, game and humus wisps to be appreciated. There is excellent density and punch to the brooding, intense and muscular flavors that exude evident minerality onto the presently linear, rustic and moderately austere finish. This will require a few years to better harmonize but the underlying material is so good that this should ultimately be excellent. Recommended if you have the patience.

(from 45-year-old vines): Medium red with ruby tones. More complex than the Gevrey Champerrier but also with obvious torrefaction notes of coffee and dark chocolate to its dark fruit aromas. A step up in intensity and precision, with cassis and blackberry fruit flavors complicated by violet and bitter chocolate nuances. A rather feminine, north-side Nuits with moderate flesh but very good definition and length. The rather delicate tannins are nicely buffered by a touch of saline minerality. I like this.

The 2015 Nuits St Georges Vieilles Vignes Bas de Combe has a rip-roaring bouquet with succulent ripe red cherries, bergamot and violet aromas that just soar from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fresh acidity, nimble on its toes with fleshy dark cherry fruit laced with bay leaf and white pepper, leading to a precise and quite sustained finish. There is a bit of bravura to this 2015 and it comes recommended.

This is the first wine to display appreciable wood toast but not so much as to really fight with the notably ripe spiced cassis and warm earth aromas. The dense, serious and vibrant medium-bodied flavors also possess a velvety texture before culminating in a palate coating finale that delivers excellent persistence for a villages level Nuits. This is definitely worth considering.

(from 80-year-old vines adjacent to Vosne-Romanée): Moderately saturated dark red. Crushed blackberry and spicy oak scents are lifted by a subtle violet topnote. Full, supple and very ripe, with the high percentage of millerandé grapes giving the wine a creamier texture and silky tannins. Late pungent minerality nicely draws out the finish. This round but fresh wine nicely combines Nuits power and Vosne elegance.

A blend of 50% Pinot Noir and 50% Gamay. Deep dark red core with black tinged edges and a bright dark red hue. Spicy red cherry scents mix with earthy forest floor like notes, dusty cedar and smoked meats. Light in body the palate is elegantly detailed with red and sour cherry fruits, earth, spicy cedar and a touch of meatiness. Dryish finish with good freshness and slightly chalky tannins. The aftertaste bony and a touch rustic.

A slightly riper nose also derives from the red side of the fruit spectrum along with evident newly turned earth nuances. The barely medium weight flavors possess both good tension and a lovely texture along with solid detail that carries over to the dusty, youthfully austere and ever-so-mildly rustic finale. This is also very good and a wine that could be enjoyed young or with 5 to 8 years of cellaring. Drink through 2028+.

Arguably the star of the village of Chassagne-Montrachet, Jean-Claude Ramonet is the third generation to have run this truly great estate; carrying on a great reputation, rather than building or re-building. Fruit from vines under 18 years old is excluded from the domaine's cuvées, and yields are severely restricted. The wines are vinified using traditional methods and then aged in oak (33% new) for 12-15 months. The Montrachet is aged in 100% new oak. There is no battonage but there is extended lees contact prior to the first racking.

This is the first wine to display any appreciable wood and even here it's subtle on the ripe and layered aromas of poached plum, cassis and pungent earth. There is excellent density to the powerful and palate staining flavors that flash a touch of bitter chocolate on the beautifully persistent finish. I would note that while this is very definitely built to repay extended cellaring, it should be reasonably approachable after only 7 to 8 years or so. Drink through 2035+.

Tasted from barrel, unracked. An even purple, not the deepest. Thee follows a quality nose, quite perfumed with a little vanilla, seductive. Fills the mouth in dark raspberry fruit enlivened by a little whole bunch feeling (50% used) that really opens up the profile of the wine. A long harmonious finish.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.

Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
