A more deeply pitched and brooding nose only grudgingly reveals its aromas of cassis plum liqueur and pungent earth where the latter is also found on the vibrant and well-detailed big-bodied and tautly muscular flavors that deliver excellent depth and persistence. This is not as dense as the best in the range, but it should have no trouble amply repaying 12 to 15 years of bottle aging. Drink through 2032+.

Almost black in the middle. More a very intense sun dried dark cherry bouquet than raisins though. Pretty heady stuff either way round. Super sumptuous with this exciting red cherry fruit as well as black, and good acidity. It would be easily possible to fall in love with this, even if it is more powerful than I really like.

The 2015 Clos Saint Denis Grand Cru includes 55% whole bunch fruit with 50% new oak. It has a composed bouquet with fine delineation, crushed rose petal and cold wet limestone permeating through the black and red fruit. It conveys the imperious personality I like from my Clos Saint-Denis. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannin, black fruit stained with orange rind and white pepper, conveying the structure and slight aloofness I appreciate in young Clos Saint-Denis, reassuring that this will age over 15-20 years. This is lip-smackingly delicious and just utterly superb.

Wood toast and a top note of menthol presently compete somewhat with the wonderfully fresh, elegant and complex nose of cool red currant, spice and an abundance of floral nuances. I very much like the mouth feel of the intense and sleekly muscular flavors that possess excellent drive that also characterizes the subtly stony, balanced and strikingly persistent finish. The underlying material appears to be present such that this should eat its wood and overall this is very classy juice.

The 2015 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru les Goulots is the first to be completely biodynamically farmed, although Florence told me that she only really noticed the difference apropos the color of the grapes in the 2016 vintage. It has a complex bouquet with redcurrant, cranberry and blood orange, very focused with deftly integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a little meatiness/dried blood developing underneath the carapace of black fruit, white pepper and Moroccan spice towards the finish. I love the tension here, not powerful but it just has the energy you would not anticipate from such a warm season.

While the wood treatment is a bit more evident it still remains a background element on the ripe but airy nose of spicy, floral and earthy red berry fruit aromas. The elevation of the vineyards is especially noticeable in a ripe vintage like 2015 as the medium weight flavors display plenty of minerality and a racy energy that carries over to the saline finish that is shaped by relatively fine-grained tannins. Lovely juice.

This is also wonderfully spicy with its very fresh aromas of black cherry, raspberry, exotic tea, hoisin and anise wisps. The mouthfeel of the broad-shouldered flavors is again highly seductive yet serious as the very firm finale is dusty and somewhat raspy where a touch of warmth eventually emerges. As noted, this is extremely firm and is going to need a very long snooze in a cool cellar before it reveals its full potential. Drink 2039+.

The much more restrained nose is strikingly spicy and offers an extensive range of floral elements on the red and dark berry fruit aromas that are cut with Asian-style tea wisps. The broad-shouldered and concentrated flavors are ultra-refined yet exceptionally powerful and almost painfully intense while offer stunningly good length on the graceful and classy finale where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This gorgeous but imposingly structured effort indisputably qualifies as a 'wow' wine and is one of the wines of the vintage. Drink through 2041+.

Mugnier's 2016 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is just being released, but readers should take its eight years of cellaring at the domaine as a statement of intent rather than a sign to start pulling corks on reception, as the wine is still very far from maturity. Unwinding in the glass with scents of dark berries, orange rind, exotic spices and a deft framing of new oak, it's full-bodied, deep and layered, with a hugely concentrated core of fruit that reflects the year's low yields, lively acids and supple but abundant structuring tannins, it concludes with a long, palate-staining finish. Drink 2028-2065.

The latest to be released is the 2016 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru. I vividly recall tasting this with Mugnier in the barrel cellar after the dramatic frost-afflicted season. To refresh your minds, allow me to reproduce the relevant paragraph from that year’s in-barrel report. Mugnier explained: “There were three barrels of young vines, pruned as Cordon de Royat, which suffered limited damage from frost, and three barrels of older vines, pruned as Guyot, that were very badly hit. The former, regardless of the age of the vines, was tasting much denser and had a greater length than the latter. The final blend of Musigny includes all three barrels of the young vines plus one of the old ones, in order to bring a touch of freshness. The two remaining barrels were blended with the Chambolle Premier Cru Les Plantes and the few grapes from Combe d’Orveau to form the Chambolle-Musigny Trente-Deux, so called after the number of vintages that I have made.”
I have re-tasted the 2016 once in bottle, blind at the Burgfest tasting, where it flirted with perfection. Nothing has changed since then. Mugnier poured the wine in November 2023 after tasting his 2022s (bottles have not been labeled, hence the photograph of the cork). The nose is stunning. There’s incredible purity and intensity, fabulous delineation and a sense of exuberance as it doles out red berry fruit, fresh black truffle shavings and sous-bois. The palate is medium-bodied, with svelte tannins, poised and precise, gently building toward a seamless finish. It represents a heavenly evocation of one of the world's greatest vineyards. Drink 2024-2060.

Fine mid purple in colour. A very appealing fresh deep red fruit on the nose, quite restrained. Then a bombshell explosion of rich ripe sweet fruit, with just enough acidity at the back. It grows and develops very well, not the most blockbuster of Musignys but finely balanced. This has come on tremendously since tasted in barrel. Indeed only 4 barrels are being bottled as Musigny, with 2 declassified after the frost.

Medium to full-bodied, layered and nicely concentrated, with bright acids and powdery tannins, it's well worth seeking out. The vines here were planted in 1937.

The freshness carries over to the palate impression of the tension-filled and beautifully detailed middleweight flavors that are markedly finer before terminating in a hugely long, firm, youthfully austere and impeccably well-balanced finale. The Clos de Vougeot is certainly good, but this classy effort possesses an extra dimension of depth. Drink through 2035+.

Tasted from barrel, unracked. All destemmed because Louis thinks it has all the finesse it needs. He has yet to try whole bunches on his Romanée St-Vivant. Mid purple colour. A very light reduction which is being hastily pushed aside by the quality of the fruit. Heady stuff without imbalance and it has its own peppery feel. Dark red fruit with a little liquorice, and the faintest of phenolic notes.

Another really attractive perfumed nose, they do seem to have hit the picking dates just right at J-J Confuron this year. Somber and inexpressive aromas of various dark berries, earth, the sauvage and pretty floral wisps introduce the acceptably dense but attractively textured medium weight flavors that possess unusually good refinement for a young Clos de Vougeot, all wrapped in a youthfully austere finish that flashes impressive depth and persistence. While this quality effort will need 12 to 15 years to reach its apogee, it's not so structured that it couldn't be enjoyed at around 7 to 8 years of age. Drink from 2031+.

Much more interesting are the much finer medium weight flavors that are at once lilting but serious, all wrapped in a compact finish that really tightens up as it sits on the palate. This is attractive in its fashion though I wouldn't describe it as especially Chambollesque. Drink from 2031+.

The initial palate impression of the medium weight flavors seems somewhat light but as they sit in the mouth the weight and power pick up and particularly so on the energetic and well-detailed finish that is less austere than usual. This balanced effort is also quite firmly structured and may well require up to 20 years of aging to completely resolve the supporting tannins. Drink from 2036+.

Back to the primary grape style of nose, otherwise quite backward. Needs more barrel time. Huge weight of fruit, dark cherry coulis, in the mouth. Nicely balanced on the palate, some elegance.

The palate is very well balanced with fine-grained, quite rigid tannins at the moment, in keeping with the Pommard style. Excellent freshness here, and a precise finish. Superb. Drink 2022 - 2035.

Plenty of preserved cherry and black raspberry fruit with notes of rosemary and thyme. Lovely silky texture until you reach the firm finish, which promises many more years of life. A cuvee of 60% grenache, 19% mourvedre, 13% syrah, 5% syrah and 3% other traditional grapes for the region. Drink or hold.

I was able to taste two releases from Julien Barrot. Looking first at his 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Julien Barrot, which is a blend of 60% Grenache, 19% Mourvedre, 13% Syrah, and a handful of other varieties, it sports a deeper purple hue to go with a fabulous bouquet of kirsch and blackberry fruits as well as licorice, crushed stone, licorice, and ground pepper. It shines for its balance and elegance on the palate, but still brings substantial fruit as well as structure. It's a thrilling wine that will benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and keep for two decades in cold cellars. Drink 2024 - 2046.

An undeniable success in the vintage, and one of the top wines, the 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape Pure is a spectacular blend of almost all Grenache, all from sandy soils and 100+-year-old vines, that was aged all in an older foudre. Rayas-like with its perfumed kirsch, rose petal, dried spice and pepper aromas and flavors, this medium to full-bodied wine has beautiful mid-palate depth, a pure silk texture and building tannin on the finish. Since taking over the estate from his father in 1992, Jean-Paul Daumen has become one of the most talented and revered winemakers in all of France regularly producing some of the top wines of the vintage. Sourced from three different parcels Les Trois Sources is a blend of 70% old vine Grenache, 10% Syrah, 5% Counoise 5% Cinsault 5% Mourvedre with the balance a field blend of various AOC allowable grapes. Vinification takes place in traditional cement vats and the wines are aged for 12 months in foudres.
Black as night heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Heady black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry aromas flood the olfactory senses with fresh herb, scorched earth, smoked meats, incense and pepper notes ensuing. Rich and weighty the palate is saturated with black cherry, black raspberry and liquorice fruits which are underpinned by a muscular structure. Dried meats, scorched earth, infusions of provincial herbs and black pepper flow onto the back half. Opulent yet chewy mouthfeel with solidly built tannins firming up the finish and imparting some grip. Outstanding power and intensity with a long, dense and chewy finish.

Inky, rich, deep, satiny red. So much concentration but freshness, rosy characters in dark, ripe berry fruit characters, licks of salted liquorice, game meat, floral notes, pretty spice. It’s a very good wine here. Intense but lifted, wonderful, evocative and yet so darn svelte and sexy. Tannins come late but so well integrated, so fine, builds beautifully. Outstanding.

True to form, the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Trois Sources is a softer, more elegant wine than the Les Hauts-Lieux and offers a gorgeous perfume of black cherries, black licorice, tapenade, violets, herbes de Provence, and jus de viande. Deep, full-bodied, and beautifully layered, it gains weight with time in the glass and is going to benefit from just short-term cellaring. It doesn’t have the concentration for any long-term cellaring yet my money is on it evolving nicely for a solid 10-12 years. Drink 2020-2032.

Showing a touch more weight than the 3 Cepages the medium to full bodied palate is well endowed with succulent black raspberry, liquorice and dark cherry fruit. Infusions of herbs, subtle scorched earth and pepper lie underneath. Quite polished with a refined tannin structure concluding fresh, amply fruited and long.

Domaine Les Aphillanthes is comprised of 30 hectares and located near Gigondas in the Rhone Valley. Farmed organically and biodynamically, proprietors Daniel and Hélène Boulle maintain a high commitment to quality, keeping only the finest 80% of grapes for their own use and selling the rest off. The 2020 releases are not as dark fruited and show more freshness and an energetic feel.
An equal parts blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre. Very deep dark red black in colour with a vibrant dark red hue. Seductive aromas of red to dark raspberries, red liquorice and red cherries intermingle with scorched earth and light pepper notes. On the mid weighted palate rich dark raspberry, black cherry and red liquorice fruits make for an intriguing mix of flavours. Infusions of herbs du Provence, scorched earth and blackpepper lend further interest. Slightly chewy tannins finishing with excellent freshness and a long dark raspberry, red liquorice, peppered herb infused aftertaste. Delicious.

Lastly, and a wine that will be a candidate for perfection in 4-5 years, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Centenaire reveals a deep ruby/purple hue as well as extraordinary notes of black cherries, licorice, iron, nori, and peppery garrigue. As with the base 2019, the estate did an incredible job with the tannins, and this wine is flawlessly balanced, with ultra-fine tannins, no hard edges, and the sheer class to evolve for 25+ years. This is a perfect example of power with no sensation of weight or heaviness. The blend in 2019 is 84% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre, and 6% Syrah, and it wasn’t destemmed and was brought up mostly in concrete tanks, with just 6% in very old barrels. Drink 2021 - 2046.

The 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Centenaire is approximately 84% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre and 6% Syrah, predominantly from a vineyard planted in the late 19th century. Aged almost entirely in foudre, it nevertheless hints at smoke and campfire on the nose while remaining dominated by black cherries and red raspberries. Full-bodied and concentrated, with ample depth and richness, this really shows its class on the long, silky, mouthwatering finish. It should drink well for upwards of a decade. Tasted blind. The 2019 Gigondas Les Racines comes from older vines from slightly lower down on the slope (it's still at altitude) and around the estate. It's slightly more complex, with a meaty, red and black-fruited style balanced by lots of wild garrigue, licorice, olive, and peppery nuances. Rich, structured, and medium to full-bodied, it has serious tannins and is going to need 3-4 years of bottle age but should have 15+ years of prime drinking. Drink 2024 - 2040.

Whiffs of herbal tea and spice add breadth to the cool, ripe and well-layered nose of various dark berries along with ample amounts of earth and sauvage nuances. There is excellent punch suffusing the succulent but powerful medium-bodied flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract before terminating in an almost painfully intense and hugely long finish. I really like the texture as this is generous yet very clearly constituted for extended cellaring. As it often is, this is the best wine in the range and with the most development potential.
