Riesling

One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners. Browse our top rated Riesling wines here.

The 2020 Rothenberg GG opens very clear, fresh and aromatic with elegant, ripe stone fruit aromas intertwined with a delicately smoky mineral spiciness. Round and beautifully juicy on the palate, this has very fine grip and a somewhat lactic creaminess that I found rather atypical for this Rothenberg that normally bursts with tension. I'm curious to follow the 2020 over the next couple of years, but at this early stage, it doesn't grab me like the 2019 did. Tasted in Wiesbaden at the end of August 2021. Drink 2027 - 2040.

A most unusual 2020 riesling GG that’s brimming with exotic-fruit aromas. Much drier on the medium-bodied palate than the nose suggested. Plenty of mineral energy and racy acidity drive this along at a brisk clip. Long, firm and complex finish. Drink or hold.

From a cooler side valley of the cru, the 2019 Riesling trocken Pettenthal GG is pure and flinty on the nose as well as displaying coolish terroir aromas. Lean and rich at the same time, this is a coolish, pure and silky-textured, salty Riesling with enormous grip yet also tannins. The finish is slightly austere. This is still a baby, and I am curious where the wine is going to. Will it reman austere or gain some texture?

The aromas of dried chamomile, mint, oolong leaf tea and delicate yellow fruit give this GG a very special style. Not for those seeking power or weight, rather for fans of delicacy. In fact, it feels almost weightless at the long, dry finish.

The 2019 Riesling trocken Rothenberg GG is quite intense and aromatic right now, still yeasty. Round and a creamy on the palate, this is a rich and concentrated yet pure, lush and tensioned, very long and salty Rothenberg with fine tannins and great aging potential. An enormous wine for Gunderloch, yet I'd keep it for at least 6-10 years before I slowly start to drink it. This is the Gunderloch wine to buy!

Quite smoky and leesy still, this is an embryonic dry white with a featherweight body, but a lot of dried-herb, green-leaf tea, licorice and sea-salt character. With aeration, some peach emerges. Plenty of tannins here, although they don’t dominate, the mineral finish quite austere.

Fritz's Riesling grows in a very small and special part of Rheinhessen called the Roter Hang, a name meaning “red hill“ due to its red-slate soils. The combination of the red slate soil, its proximity to the Rhine river, exposure to the sun and the steepness of the vineyards are perfect for producing wines with wonderful ripeness.
Brilliant water like core with a greenish tinged rim. Red apple and lime aromas mix with hints of honeysuckle, toast and spice. Brimming with delicious lime and red apple fruits, the palate shows terrific intensity. Traces of honeysuckle, mandarin and slatey mineral characters fill out the back half. Finishes dry with crunchy acidity and a delightfully long, mouth watering aftertaste.

Still rather closed this is a very concentrated wine with a beautiful balance that makes it taste less powerful than it really is. Major minerality at the very long, powerful finish. And all this at just 12.5% alcohol. Better from 2018.

An enchanting fragrance of summer meadow and orchard lifts the sensory spirits. Starts off sweet on the tongue with a ripe peachy note, but salty minerality and ample acidity take care of a well-balanced flavour. Generous and charming.

The citrus coloured 2016 Pettenthal Riesling GG has a clear, fresh/coolish and spicy bouquet of ripe and concentrated Riesling berries, slate and very discreet toast aromas. Full-bodied, round and creamypiquant on the palate, with lush and intense fruit, grainy tannins and some prominent oak that still has to be integrated (Hoesch 1200-liter Stückfass) this is a complex and mouth-filling Pettenthal that needs some years to develop and gain finesse.

Can the 2015 Nackenheim Rothenberg Riesling trocken GG top the excellent Nackenheim "1er Cru"? Wow, it can! This wine is very clear, precise and very deep on the stony and smoky—or rather flinty—nose. There are ripe stone fruit aromas that come along as more discreet and spicy, with crushed slate notes. On the palate, the minerals buffer the lively acidity and give an almost mealy, round and silky texture. This is a noble wine with a stimulatingly salty and vibrating finish. If you don't want to miss one of the greatest wines made from the red slope in 2015, then this is surely a wine to buy.

Complex nose of red berries, pink grapefruit and fresh herbs. This may only be medium-bodied, but a great deal of mineral and herbal character has been packed into this sleek frame (only 12% alcohol), and the finish is really long and polished; excellent ageing potential.

Bin D674. A harmonious blend from the Clare Valley and Tasmania. It steals the best from each - the lime-lemon juice and zest of the Clare matched with the mineral thread of acidity and depth of flavour from Tasmania, and rolls them into a synergistic whole. Pure, precise and pristine, with great length.

Eden Valley riesling from Flaxman Valley. Pale with green flashes in the glass and aromas of wonderfully perfumed, freshly squeezed lime and grapefruit tones with hints of mineral salts, Christmas lily, frangipani, crushed quartz, lavender and distant hints of marzipan and fennel tops. Pure and true with just a touch of textural pith, sapid mineral-rich acidity and a long draw on the finish. Good cellaring potential here. Drink by 2035.

Flaxman’s Valley is a high altitude sub-region of the Eden Valley and one of our most highly regarded districts for growing great Riesling. Combine that with the stellar 2023 vintage and we are in for something special. Cold fermentation took place in refrigerated stainless steel tanks. A shining pale yellow colour. This is beautifully perfumed with talc, bath salts, lavender, florals and citrus, notably intense limes with fine balance and a lingering finish. There is a fine line of crisp acidity with good intensity. Love this and best at ten to twelve years, with potentially a lot more, ahead of it. Drink 2023-2035.

The yields were very low across the Clare Valley in '19, but the quality was very high. This wine achieves the difficulty of dealing with flavours going OTT without losing the brightness and freshness the palate displays. It's lemon/lime/green apple sorbet all in one mouthful. Acidity of 7.5g/l and a pH of 2.88 are the indicia of a high quality riesling wherever it may be grown. Drink by 2030.

This is a reserve selection from a number of Eden Valley vineyards honouring ancestor Julius Henschke, and is always a wine of utmost quality. Its flowery, fragrant lime and lemon aromas soar from the glass, the palate with its spear of unsweetened lime and lemon finish and aftertaste underlining its intensity and quality. Drink by 2037.

This has such vibrant and pure, tangy fruit. Lime zest, lemons, white flowers, green apples, slate and shells. Dusty crushed stones, too. Sharp and precise, with a medium body and mouthwatering acidity. This is very fruity and dense, with a column of fruit that goes deep in to the wine. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold. 2022 marks the 30th anniversary of the Julius Riesling, and what a vintage to be able to commemorate. 2022 was blisteringly good, seemingly everywhere in South Australia (and Western Australia too), and that was never more true than for Riesling. Here, in the 2022 Julius Riesling, the tension and savory precision that marks Julius is out in full force; the wine this year is littered with preserved lemon, brine, pith and crushed shells (odd, sure, given the non-proximity to ocean!) and, more interesting, leafy things too, like green tea and orchard leaves. Kaffir lime, also? Excellent. Drink 2022-2037.

Sourced from three high altitude Eden Valley blocks of varying aspects, winemaker Andrew Quin has produced a stunning Riesling that’s bursting with flavour. The 2023 vintage saw below average daytime temperatures and cool nights, ideal ripening conditions for Riesling, allowing for extended and gradual flavour accumulation. This resulted in wines that possess a combination of high natural acidity, intense flavours and amazing power.

A super scrumptious Eden Valley Riesling that delivers mouth watering flavours with terrific drive and force.

White peach, fig, muskmelon and lime are sitetypically accented with anise and smoky black tea on an effusive nose and a luscious, lush, silkentextured palate. One finds not only smokiness and chalky stone infusion but also a tingling sense of crystalline mineral impingement to the animated, long-lasting, mouthwateringly salt-tinged finish. “I’m really very, very satisfied with this,” noted Löwenstein, “as it comes close to my ideal of ripe, even tropical fruit combined with a cooling, minerally finish. In the past,” he added, “my Röttgen was often quite baroque and very broad due to botrytis influence and a few too many shrivelled berries, whereas now we have finesse, while preserving the strength of Röttgen.” I can’t disagree with that assessment.

This proves still rather reduced and only gradually reveals a beautiful nose made of grapefruit zest underpinned by a hint of passion fruit and fruit salad on the nose, all nicely wrapped into mineral and herby elements. The wine dances on the palate and leaves a medium-bodied and beautifully elegant and persistent feel of smoke and minerals in the delicately fruity even if slightly powerful finish. Despite the touch of power, the wine remains delightfully balanced right into the long after-taste. There is quite some upside here as the wine further gains in elegance and harnesses its power with bottle age. 2021-2036.

A dramatic and complex dry Mosel Riesling even if it has done some malolactic fermentation (there's a hint of butter which ought to integrate with bottle age). All the wines from this producer are darker than most. Funkissimo on the nose. Sort of burnished gold nose. Very dry finish. And masses to chew on in the middle. White peach, mirabelle and lime inform an enticing nose and silken palate, and hints of cocoa powder and coffee add a sense of roasted richness. Yet, for all that, the lusciously long finish remains refreshingly juicy and remarkably transparent to stony and smoky nuances. Given its soft overall impression, I suspect this will not be one of those Heymann-Löwenstein bottlings worth holding for a decade or more. As is the case with other wines in the present collection, 13% alcohol does not engender any heat or heaviness; on the contrary, there is even some sense of buoyancy. It’s striking how different this wine from crumbly red slate is from the corresponding Stolzenberg, grown cheek-by-jowl but on unusually compact blue slate.

An enticing nose of fennel pollen, coriander, white peach and kumquat sets the stage for a silken-textured, expansive palate at once lush and piquant. The piquant elements are woven glowingly into the long-lasting finish here so as to maximize invigoration while avoiding outright bitterness, while green herbal essences lend a cooling aura. Underlying wet stone acts as a Mosel signature, and subtle salinity serves for saliva-inducement. I last tasted this from both casks of it in September 2016, and have tried to do justice to a composite impression in a single tasting note. The wine was due to have been bottled in the spring of 2017. (Note that a large letter “R” will once again stand in for “Roth Lay” on this wine’s label, but beneath that is written in tiny letters “Schieferformation Roth-Lay.” And the initials that signify Grosses Gewächs, as with Löwenstein’s other wines and for reasons indicated in my introduction, will appear in almost infinitesimally small print.)

Tasted from the barrel and still dusty in its ripe golden color, the 2015 Riesling Uhlen R 'VDP Grosse Lage' (which is always bottled late) combines super ripe, rich and intense tropical fruit aromas (pineapples) with the spicy flavors of red (iron-rich) slate. The palate, however, is stunningly pure and finessed, highly elegant and almost light whereas the finish is very long, full of salt, grip and tension. A great promise!

We tasted the three different casks which will make out the final Uhlen R. While there are differences in structure and mouth-feel between the casks, all casks offers a similarly gorgeous nose of candied grapefruit, yellow peach, wet stones and fine dried spices. The wine is beautifully well balanced on the palate, marrying aromatic precision with silky smoothness and delicately tickly zest as fruit and minerals coat the palate. The finish is beautifully pure and multi-layered. There is huge potential here if the wine’s presence and finesse will make it into the bottle and shine through at maturity. 2020-2030

Brilliant water like colour with a subtle tinge of green around the rim. Punchy lime, citrus and orange rind scents jump out of the glass trailed by talc and light wet steel notes. The palate possesses an intense flavour profile of limes, orange rind and citrus fruits with notions of talc and chalky mineral characters sitting underneath. Crisp dry finish with mouth watering acidity and a long tangy aftertaste.
Drink over the next 3-4 years.

The Weber family of Hofgut Falkenstein have been making ultra-traditional Rieslings in the Saar district of the Mosel region since the mid-eighties; there they farm about 9 hectares in and around the villages of Niedermennig and Krettnach. Erich, the family winzer (winegrower in german) works alongside his middle son Johannes, who has joined him full-time in the vineyards and cellar in recent years. Ever since there has been more of a focus on Rieslings with residual sugar. The emphasis on their work is in the vineyard, where no pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers are employed and cover crops are grown to encourage biodiversity and, when necessary, competition with the vines for water. With their straightforward approach to winemaking the Webers craft light, distinctive and racy Rieslings displaying well-integrated acidity from their low yielding old vines, and are bottled traditionally by the cask.

    Other Reviews....
The 2022er Krettnacher Euchariusberg Riesling Kabinett Kugel Peter (the reference to this internal cask name is provided in small print on the label after the AP number) was harvested on 50-year-old from partially un-grafted vines in the prime Gross Schock sector of the vineyard, which was classified in the highest category on the old taxation maps, and was fermented down to barely fruity-styled levels of residual sugar. It shows a beautifully fresh and finely aromatic nose of spices, gooseberry, cassis, rote redcurrant, herbal tea, and lime. The wine is beautifully playful and still compact on the palate, as the juicy elements of yellow fruits are wrapped into bright and lively juicy acidity. The finish is vibrating and superbly energetic. What a great Kabinett! Drink 2029-2042.

Riesling in Australia.

Riesling is thought to have been introduced to New South Wales in the 1830s by the Macarthur's (pioneers of the Australian wool industry). German settlers brought the variety to the Barossa Valley in South Australia in the 1850's where the grape flourished. It's since found many new homes, such as Mt. Barker in Western Australia, the Clare Valley in South Australia, as well as Central and Southern Victoria. A tightrope of fruit and racy acidity when young, age-worthy examples develop honey and toast characteristics, sometimes accompanied by a distinct 'kerosene' note. Generally suited to cooler climates, examples from Grosset, Petaluma, Wilson Polish Hill, Dukes, Western Australia and Best's Great Western, Victoria are all worth seeking out.
