Riesling

One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners.

An exceptionally powerful and intensely flavoured Riesling with sizzling acidity lending laser like precision.

Sourced from two sites on the Forest Hill Vineyard with vine age of 20 and 48 years old respectively. Brilliant water like colour with greenish toned edges. Lime and lemon scents jump out of the glass followed by some orange rind, wet steel and chalky mineral notes. Crunchy lime, lemon and Granny Smith apple fruits engulf the mouth providing it with good textural volume which is counterpointed by sizzlingly crisp acidity. Some wet steel, orange rind and flinty mineral characters linger through the long, concentrated and zippy finish.

A blend of Block 2 (planted 1975) and the youngest Highbury Fields site. Its lime and apple blossom fragrance leads the way for the palate with a delicate framework of acidity. The overall balance and length can't be faulted.

Brilliant water like colour with a faint tinge of green around the outskirts. Intense lime, green apple and lemon scents are followed by chalky talc and steely mineral notes. Showing terrific power and concentration, piercing flavours of lime juice, granny smith apple and lemon are both racy and linear in their feel. Crunchy acidity forms the spine with wet steel, chalky talc and mineral characters the back drop. Outstanding structure for long term cellaring. Mouth-watering finish with an exceptionally long aftertaste.

Block 2 was planted in '75, a foundation block for viticulture in South West Australia. Hand-picked and sorted, pressed and chilled for fermentation. The wine has 9.2g/l of acidity, and attacks the mouth like a whirling dervish, but doesn't compromise the fruit. Drink by 2033.

Brilliant straw pale gold colour with a watery hue. Powerful aromas of honeyed apple and apricot overlay hints of ripe lime, marmalade and light spice. Rich and super luscious yet at the same time remarkably fresh and light on its feet, honey drenched flavours of red apples, lemon and peaches coat the palate over elements of marmalade and dried pineapple. Beautifully refined fresh acidity acts as the perfect foil to the rich honeyed fruit. Exceptionally long aftertaste of honeyed peaches, red apples, citrusy pineapple and a touch of marmalade.

Blended from three auslese picks with 100% botrytis but not fully-raisined berries. Fermented in stainless barrels. Only the third beerenauslese made by Framingham. Intensely aromatic riesling with great weight and intensity held together by a lovely line of acidity. Very pure, with honey from botrytis but still showing good varietal character with tropical and tree fruit flavours. Very long with a mouth-watering finish.

Of the estate's 15 hectares on the gravels of the Wairau Valley, half of those are planted to Riesling. Production of other varieties is supplemented by purchased fruit. In 2017, the deluges that made the vintage challenging for varieties like Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir meant a decent amount of botrytis in the late-ripening Riesling. There's a full range of noble-sweet prädikats as a result, including a stunning beerenauslese and a super sweet trockenbeerenauslese.
A stupendous effort, the 2017 F Series Riesling Beerenauslese features gorgeous aromas and flavors of dried apricot and candied pineapple. It's incredibly sweet and rich (220 grams per liter residual sugar) yet balanced by a crisp edge of lime zest. I wouldn't hesitate to put it up against some top German competition. It should age well for a decade or two. Drink 2018-2035.

This is an excellent introduction to the renowned Rieslings of Frankland Estate, it’s up front generosity of fruit making it ideal for earlier drinking.

Brilliant water like colour with a faint tinge of green around the outskirts. Intense lime and citrus aromas intermix with orange rind, talc and steely mineral notes. Already the nose has an enormous depth of white peach fruit, honeysuckle and citrus blossom aromas, new nuances emerge with each swirl of the glass. Super-concentrated, medium-bodied palate with a totally compelling interplay of creaminess from long lees contact with juicy stone fruit and pink grapefruit character, plus mineral acidity. The very long, salty finish pulls you back for more of this masterpiece. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Riesling is the Frankland Estate signature grape, and gee they do a good job of it. Very different to most Australian Riesling too.
Pie apple, lime, plenty of spice, mint and aniseed. It’s chalky, rich in flavour, all lime and apple, with a nutty and chalk dust texture, lots of oomph, almost into Chardonnay weight, with a slight petrol perfume, and excellent length. Crushed fennel seed, guava and apple on the finish. Powerful and very ‘mineral’. Lime zest and Parmesan rind too. Lots of grip. Loads of personality. Terrific. Drink 2024 - 2034.

An exquisitely fine and delicate expression of Riesling from one the finest makers of this variety in Australia. Lemon sorbet on the nose with a distinctive minerality displaying almost a flinty character. Not sure if that’s vineyard or the time on lees but expect it’s the vineyard. The acid is finely in tune and helps the palate rock along to a super long finish. The time on lees has helped textural development.

Seriously, if Frankland Estate can’t make outstanding Riesling, well, what’s the point of getting out of bed? A more subtle offering in 2022 retains the DNA thumbprint of the vineyard. Lemon blossom, honeysuckle, lime zest and finger lime acidity, yet softish and almost plush. The palate builds, adding a slip of sexy phenolics, the merest smidge of sweetness and everything in harmony to extend out and excite to the very end. As usual, an elegant, distinct riesling. Drink by 2036.

    Notes from winery....
A very wet winter gave us good soil moisture as we headed into a dry start to summer. We had no rain between mid-November and mid-January, when we got a good dose to freshen the vines. The weather cooled off significantly afterwards, allowing for plenty of calm hangtime that resulted in hallmark line and intensity in a relatively delicate year. As is now tradition, we left the wine on lees for nine months as we enjoy the texture and personality this imparts. It highlights the subtle yet distinct flinty ironstone notes, which are wrapped up in the mouthfeel of the wine. Complex and fine from the off, with pretty, lifted florals, lime, mandarin sorbet, white nectarine, pure and almost ethereal, this has excellent length.

Flavour in the acidity. That’s what it’s all about here. The lines are very straight and ultra direct but they are more than that; they are conduits. Lime, talc, mandarin and florals with something almost jibe in the centre of the palate there. A trail of gun smoke enters the aftertaste. This is excellent. Drink 2022 - 2032+

Light straw-yellow colour. Pungent passionfruit and lychee aromas, cool-grown aromas, while the palate is concentrated, just off-dry and tangy with quite brisk acidity and again a lot of tropical, passionfruity flavours. There's a lick of tannin, which brings a touch of bitterness that all lingers on the very long aftertaste. Very attractive and a little bottle-age might bring more fluency. It certainly has intensity and powerful fruit.

    Notes from winery....
The 2021 harvest will be remembered for the perfect spring conditions leading into the ripening period. With the return to a “normal” picking date (starting on 19th March), we harvested excellent white grapes – gratefully accepting generous cropping levels after two small vintages in 2019 and 2020. With bunch sizes and volumes back to normal levels we saw ripening slowly evolve and build some wonderful fruit flavour and concentration. Thus it’s a very exciting release.

    Notes from winery....
A complex, beautifully balanced combination of fruit intensity, complexity of flavour and alluring finish. Candied citrus, orange oil, apple crumble with spice notes as well. This wine continues our drive to explore Riesling's different dimensions even when working with one site. When it comes to the SmithCullam Riesling, it’s all about making the most of the 1988-planted Geisenheim clone’s delicacy and brightness. Thanks to its elevated natural acidity we simply ferment in large-format oak (1,000 litres) to a point where the delicacy and undisputed integrity of the wine reach their zenith. The ferment is arrested when we see lovely balance. The wine remains on lees in barrel for nine months to gain additional complexity and texture. These wines are designed to evolve, building in complexity and weight as they age. But they must also be delicious from the start.
The SmithCullam Riesling is not made every year and the conditions have to be right to achieve this “Kabinett” style. While we need cool conditions, we look to pick this only a day or two prior to the Isolation Ridge Riesling. In essence both wines celebrate the weight and underlying power of this special vineyard.

Not really that poisonous but an evocative name nonetheless.
Strong lime and citrus blossom aromas, very pure, quite foggy but perfumed approach. Succulent and delicious, straight up. Lime juice, green apple, a lick of barely there grapefruit pithy here. Tangerine to finish. And minerally. Strong minerally finish, indeed. Tickles with its detail, filigree and stippled texture at once. Magic wine.

Located deep in the heart of Western Australia’s most isolated wine region, Frankland Estate have been one of the countries leading Riesling producers for well over 20 years. The Isolation Ridge vineyard was planted in 1988 and produces probably their most revered Riesling capable of long term cellaring, a case in point being the 2009 museum release also featured in this newsletter which at over 10 years of age still remains remarkably fresh. The cool nights and long slow ripening periods typical of the Frankland River region allow maximum flavour development while maintaining the distinctive vibrant acidity for which Rieslings from this region are renowned. Primarily fermented in stainless steel tanks, where it is left on its lees for six months, a small parcel of was fermented and aged in (neutral) oak for 10 months to provide more complex textural components and enhance the opulence of the wine.

Wonderfully pristine and pure, this is a scintillating Riesling, bursting with intense, mouth-watering lemon and lime fruit.

The Isolation Vineyard was planted in 1988, the same year I went to Sydney University for about one day, so I can tell you, it seems quite a while back for me too. It’s a powerful style of Riesling, no doubt. Green apple, wet stones, lavender, lime and fresh yoghourt. Intense, bold, fine powdery pumice stone texture with perfume, guava and zest of lime, cool commanding acidity, but so settled and unobtrusive, almost a key lime pie richness carrying the very long finish. Brilliant water like core with distinct highlights of green skirting the edges. Intense lime, citrus and orange rind scents leap out of the glass trailed by some red apple, talc and steely mineral notes. A concentrate of lime, lemon and Granny Smith apple fruits greet the palate with laser beam like acidity providing great tension and a zingy feel. Superb power and textural volume with notions of chalky talc, orange rind and steely mineral elements interspersed through the very long, scintillating finish.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

Boasting superb intensity and sublime power this is one out of the box for Riesling fans.

A brilliant water like core is framed by greenish tinged edges. Driving the nose are intense aromatics of lemon and lime with flashes of orange blossom, Granny Smith apple, wet steel and flinty mineral notes also chiming in. A combination of power and precision, mouth watering flavours of lime, lemon and tangy mandarin are thrust across the palate with exceptional force. Finishes dry with crisp, zingy acidity and a very long scrumptious aftertaste infused with wet steel and flinty mineral elements. An exceptional Riesling.

Intense and racy with laser like, mineral infused acidity driving a core of mouth watering lemon and lime fruit.

Brilliant very pale straw almost water like colour with a distinct greenish tinge running around the outskirts. Intense lime juice and lemon zest aromas are intermeshed with green apple, steely mineral and chalky talc notes. Showing terrific concentration are racy lemon and lime fruits which are underpinned by zippy acidity. Green apple, tangy mandarin, infusions of wet steel and flinty mineral characters chime in on the dry crunchy finish. Outstanding drive with a mouth-wateringly long aftertaste.

Ever reliable, and one of my favourite Tasmanian rieslings. It has laser-like precision, its lime-infused fruit simply nodding to the 8.5g/l of titratable acidity. No frills winemaking other (perhaps) than the selection of a Mosel Valley isolate yeast. Drink by 2034.

Brilliant water like colour with a faint glimmer of green around the outskirts. Intense lime and green apple scents dominate the nose with subtle mandarin, citrus and flinty mineral notes following on. Medium to long lemon, lime, green apple and steely mineral aftertaste.

The Fritz Haag estate is located in the heart of the central Mosel River Valley and has a history dating back to 1605. All 18.5ha of vineyards are planted to Riesling, the excellent micro-climate and deep slate soils of the Brauneberger Juffer slope forming the basis for some of the most intensely flavoured and elegantly-structured Rieslings in Mosel.  This wine comes from the blue slate soils of the steep slope sites of the villages of Brauneberg and Mulheim.
Brilliant water like colour with greenish tinged edges. Lifted lime and red apple aromatics are followed by hints of honeysuckle, pear and stony mineral notes. Terrific intensity of flavour with zippy lime and red apple fruits to the fore. Notions of honeysuckle, subtle tangy mandarin and flinty mineral elements ensue. Finishes slightly off dry with zingy acidity and a long juicy aftertaste that has a lemony freshness to it.

The 2020er Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese, as it is referred to on the consumer label and with a golden capsule, was made from partially botrytized grapes harvested at 110-115° Oechsle and was fermented down to noble-sweet levels of residual sugar. It proves still hugely reductive and only gradually reveals a highly aromatic and ripe nose of exotic fruits (mango, guava, passion fruit, and roasted pineapple), as well as toffee, minty herbs, William’s pear, and acacia. The wine proves juicy and fully fruity with quite some exotic presence on the subtly honeyed palate and leaves a sense of pure notes of mango, tangerine, and candied grapefruit wrapped into some zesty elements in the gorgeously playful finish. This noble-sweet wine now only needs some patience to integrate its elements and reveal its full potential. Drink 2030-2060.

A generous expression of peach and citrus fruit aromas is accompanied by a subtle herbal notion reflecting the action of natural yeast. The flavour opens with a sweet flicker of ripe fruit before a rock-solid minerality, with nuances of graphite and quinine, takes charge of the flavour. A third dimension is added by an almost medicinal expression of spices. Drink 2023 – 2032.

Brilliant very pale straw colour with a distinctive ring of green around the outskirts and a watery hue. Lifted lime, mandarin and red apple aromas have a faint honeysuckle edge followed by notes of wet slate. Intensely flavoured and bursting with an energetic freshness, the palate serves up lime, zesty mandarin and red apple fruits over light honeysuckle, wet slate and flinty mineral characters. Slightly off dry finish with a long zingy aftertaste.

In 2019, Oliver Haag has succeeded again in producing an outstanding series of Rieslings, which includes the estate wine with concentration and length that is spectacular in this price range. After all, the grapes come exclusively from steep slopes, premier crus if you like, which are more in the side valleys, are inclined to the south and benefit from the cooling down wind like the Sonnenlay with its fine slate soil. The low yield in 2019 and the mostly old vines provide undreamt-of density and complexity here. It is a "Wine of the Year" for me and can hardly be surpassed in its price range.
The 2019 Riesling is pure, bright and crystal-clear on the precise, floral and finessed nose. Round and juicy on the palate, this is a very delicate and stimulating Riesling in the off-dry style. The wine has enormous grip, and you won't stop longing for it. Absolutely fabulous! Drink 2020-2032.

The 2019 Brauneberg Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Trocken GG is very fine, flinty, delicate and charming on the precise and beautifully articulated slatey and herbal nose that also displays highly refined and discreet tropical fruit aromas. However, the nose is remarkably shy at this early stage. On the palate, this is a lithe Juffer Sonnenuhr with great finesse and a pure, mineral, persistently salty and crunchy finish that doesn't show much fruit and power at this stage. This seems to be a rather ascetic yet piquant and salty Riesling, and I am curious how the wine will develop over the next six months. The finish is very long, intense and still dominated by yeasty notes. This will develop to a spectacular JSU with time.

The 2019er Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Trocken GG offers a very delicate and flowery nose of almond cream, yellow peach, smoke, tangerine, candied grapefruit, and herbs, all wrapped into suffused smoke and reduction. The wine is all about finesse on the light-weighted, subtly creamy, and flower-infused palate. The right edge of reductive funk here and a very fresh array of white-nectarine and lime aromas and succulent flavors. Sublime freshness and drinkability here. Screw cap.

Brilliant water like colour with a faint tinge of green lining the outskirts. Lime and red apple aromas combine followed by some citrus blossom and slatey mineral notes. Crunchy lime and red apple fruits fill the mouth complimented by some orange blossom and subtle notions of honeysuckle. Finishes dry and crisp with shades of minerality shining through on the long aftertaste.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.

Georg Breuer estate was founded in 1880 as part of a wine merchant company, and has been owned by the Breuer family since the beginning of the 20th century. Georg Breuer enlarged the estate and increased the export of wines. His sons Bernhard and Heinrich and later Bernhard’s daughter Theresa expanded the vineyard size to 40 hectares in the best Rüdesheim, Rauenthal and Lorch sites. Theresa Breuer was thrust into the business after the sudden passing of her father in 2004, and through tireless work and dedication is now one of the most respected winemaking forces in Germany. The estate's focus is on top dry Riesling wines from the unique terroir of the Rheingau valley, and Breuer's flagship crus are Rüdesheim Berg Schlossberg and the 12.5-acre monopole, Rauenthal Nonnenberg.

Georg Breuer has vines on 3.5 hectares of the Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg. With a gradient of 70%, this is the steepest vineyard in the Rheingau. Its name derives from the Ehrenfels castle ruins above the Rhine Gorge. Heat-absorbing weathered slate with loess and loam give ideal ripening conditions for Riesling which thrives on the high mineral content of the soil. Farming is 100% organic (Georg Breuer is certified by Fair & Green). 100% healthy, ripe fruit, no maceration, whole cluster pressing, fermentation in old German wooden barrels (600-litre and 1,200 -litre), one racking after the fermentation and then a storage period on the fine lees for about seven months.

Sourced from nine different parcels, the 2022 Berg Schlossberg opens with a deep, pure and intensely mineral bouquet with notes of crushed stones and even iodine and a dash of lemon juice. Full-bodied, round and very elegant on the palate, this is an intense, silky textured and persistently saline Berg Schlossberg with delicate bitters on the finely structured and still discreetly astringent finish. It has stunning complexity and refined acidity with grapefruit bitters on the mineral finish. This 2022 has excellent aging potential. 11.5% stated alcohol. Diam cork. Tasted at the domaine in September 2023. Drink 2029-2050.

According to Breuer, the 2022 Riesling Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg is the wine that shows most facets of the Rüdesheimer Berg. This is usually picked in fully south- and south-west-facing parcels, differing in altitude. In 2022, however, the core south-facing parcel was omitted, as the grapes were too stressed, so this is mostly of southwest-facing parcels. Hazelnut, apricot and cream speak tenderly on the nose. The palate is fresh and has much texture and concentration, yet the body is slender. Yeastiness combines with lemon pith on the palate and is countered by a gentle nuttiness. The picture is of compactness with a salty, lemony edge that makes the mouth water. Bright, unfrilly, clean-cut, resonant. (Bone-dry) Drink 2023-2035.

Here you can really smell and taste that these were tiny berries that held very little juice and struggled to reach full ripeness, but the result is truly amazing. What an astonishing aroma spectrum this sleek and incredibly focused dry has: everything from wild herbs to jack fruit! Enormous concentration is packed into a very sleek frame (11.5% alcohol), the wine at once imposing and delicate. Limited production. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.

The 2020 Berg Schlossberg offers an intense and earthy bouquet with wet clayish slate and lemony as well as flinty aromas. Lush and elegant on the palate, this is a powerful, quite rich and mouth-filling Berg Schlossberg with grippy tannins, fine bitters and a long, intense and salty, very complex finish. More powerful than the 2021 and, in all its generosity and tension, a safe bet for the future. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in July 2022. Drink 2025 - 2050.

The subtle exotic-fruit bouquet is already something special. However, the extremely precise and filigree palate is more exciting. This is a very refined dry riesling with a very long, salty finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Drinkable now, but best from 2023.

The vineyard site Pfaffenwies was initially mentioned as ‘pafenwies’ in documents from 1211, and later as ‘pfaffenwissen’ (1235). It was named after Pastor Dydo, also known as ‘Pfaffe’. This steep site has a gradient of up to 45% and is situated between 90 to 160m above sea level. The soil is a combination of stony Hunsrück slate and Taunus quartzite, with loess in the lower parts. Riesling from this area is characterised by great elegance as well as pronounced acidity and minerality.

    Other Reviews....
The 2020 Pfaffenwies is sourced in the upper and lower plots of the cru, whereas in 2019, it was sourced just in the lower vineyards and the top section as well as the younger middle part went into the Terra Montosa. The bouquet is fascinating in its slatey/flinty purity and lemon-scented intensity with just a hint of oak. Vinified in oak like the Montosa, this is a full-bodied, pure, fresh and mineral Pfaffenwies with power, salt and grip and enormous length and complexity. Power and texture meet grip and salinity here, and although the 2020 is still a baby, it is highly promising. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in July 2022. Drink 2025 - 2045.

Ravishingly subtle nose with a slew of wild herbs and a cornucopia of golden autumnal fruit, this is super elegant and finely etched dry white with so much minerality through the very delicate finish, which stretches out towards the horizon. Parcels of the Berg Rottland vineyard site stretching into the village of Rüdesheim predominantly consist of deep loess soils. Elsewhere shallow, gravely soils emerging from slate and sandstone prevail. Yields are very low, at about 25 hl/ha.

A stunning GG equivalent! Serious ripeness, but it somehow remains poised and precise with minty freshness that gives it a light feel. The flavors roll gracefully over the palate through to the very long, grapefruit-peel and mineral finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drinkable now, but better in 2022.

The grapes for this wine are sourced from the second-best parcels of the grand cru-classified vineyard sites in Rüdesheim and Rauenthal. Here deep phyllite, clay and quartzite slate soils prevail. The Latin name “Montosa” hints at the mountainous earth of the steep vineyard sites.

This is a bit closed and, therefore, not one of the 2019s that leap into your face. Yet, it has really impressive depth, is precisely proportioned and has a lot of finesse at the very long finish. Try to be patient, if you want the best from this delicate masterpiece. Riesling in Australia.

Riesling is thought to have been introduced to New South Wales in the 1830s by the Macarthur's (pioneers of the Australian wool industry). German settlers brought the variety to the Barossa Valley in South Australia in the 1850's where the grape flourished. It's since found many new homes, such as Mt. Barker in Western Australia, the Clare Valley in South Australia, as well as Central and Southern Victoria. A tightrope of fruit and racy acidity when young, age-worthy examples develop honey and toast characteristics, sometimes accompanied by a distinct 'kerosene' note. Generally suited to cooler climates, examples from Grosset, Petaluma, Wilson Polish Hill, Dukes, Western Australia and Best's Great Western, Victoria are all worth seeking out.
