2023 Kumeu River Mates Vineyard ChardonnayKumeu, NEW ZEALAND$110. 00Bottle$1320.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: StelvinOther reviews....
The 2023 Mate's Vineyard Chardonnay is complete; all flavor points and spice characteristics are present and accounted for, albeit restrained and even a little muted. The low-lying Maté's vineyard received plenty of rain and runoff in the 2023 rainfall, but the wine still feels fresh, vibrant and focused. There are notes of shaved fennel, white pepper, almond meal and tatami mat/straw—a decidedly white spectrum of flavor and spice. Stylistically, I usually see this wine being quite punchy, powerful and sometimes tropical. In this wet year, the wine is retrained and decidedly composed—while some may view this as being "not the Maté's style," I think it is a very good iteration of this vineyard. Time will tell, but I like it a lot. 12.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2024-2038.

Erin Larkin - Wine Advocate (Dec 20, 2024)Very steely and floral, with brightness and impressive aromas of honeysuckle, lemongrass and just a touch of cream. Medium- to full-bodied with layered and creamy phenolics that give a lovely, almost velvety texture to the wine, and then the end is so crisp and minerally. Driven at the end. Needs time to come together. This will be so complex in three to four years. Best after 2027.

JamesSuckling.comMore reticent than the other wines on the nose but the richness and density come through on the palate. The Mendoza clone fruit really shines this year, the small berries giving and intensity and concentration. This is the 31st vintage of Matés and Brajkovich is committed to treasure the vines, even though ever present leaf-roll virus remains. Enticing and fine boned with a surprisingly lengthy finish. Drink from 2027 - 2032.

Jane Skilton MW - Inside BurgundyDespite the challenging vintage, the 2023 Chardonnay Maté's Vineyard shows its attractively chewy, textural personality, richer concentration and length. The wine is certainly ripe despite only hitting 12.5% alcohol, with a buzzy acidity enveloped by a wine that is surprisingly succulent and satisfying despite the season. Perhaps I ought not to be surprised. It is Kumeu River's Maté's, after all. Drink: 2024 - 2038.

2023 Kumeu River Hunting Hill ChardonnayKumeu, NEW ZEALAND$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 12.8%Closure: StelvinOther reviews....
The 2023 Hunting Hill Chardonnay is the most concentrated of the collection so far with the Ray's Road wine still to be tasted. This vineyard is very close to the Maté's vineyard, up on the slope overlooking the other. The wine has nuances of sun-dried kelp, scratched lemon peel, yellow peach and churned butter/almond meal richness. This is likely more in line with the vineyard expression "as we know it," with a floral lift through the finish. This is a really good wine here. It's nutty, salty and floral. 12.8% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2024-2033.

Erin Larkin - Wine Advocate (Dec 20, 2024)Aromas of apples, white peaches and steel with hints of lemongrass, fresh basil, flint and white flowers. Medium- to full-bodied with a tight and dense center palate and a crunchy and flavorful finish. Energetic acidity. So fresh yet dense at the same time.

JamesSuckling.comThere is no new oak on any of the 2023s (with the exception of Rays Road) but a portion was aged in one and two year old barrels. Lemon drops and crisp red apple. A subtle silken creamy texture, with the signature edge of flint (but not of the volume seen in the previous vintages). Impressive and elegant. Drink from 2025 - 2030.

Jane Skilton MW - Inside BurgundyA wet and difficult vintage, but never mind, it’s what’s in the glass that matters. I think this may be my favourite wine from the single vineyard Chardonnays from Auckland.
White flowers, mint, white peach, lemon and lime, almond biscotti, and spice. It’s an understated wine, though it has something about it which really gets me in, and maybe that’s the cool and ‘mineral’ feel it offers, or the light crunch of acidity combined with classic and delicate Chardonnay flavour. It has perfume and precision, and the length is excellent. It’s classy and high-toned, floral and nutty, flinty, and delicious. It’s water-coloured, yes, yet it’s a beautiful wine. 2023 Kumeu River Coddington ChardonnayKumeu, NEW ZEALAND$89. 99Bottle$1079.88 DozenABV: 12.6%Closure: StelvinOther reviews....
The 2023 Coddington Chardonnay is sleek and polished. The fruit is on the kiwi fruit, almond meal and white peach end of the spectrum, and the fruit is lean. Tightly coiled acidity is gently embossed into the fruit; it is neatly packaged and very tight. The wine builds as it opens, and while the first sip was difficult to get a reading on, the ensuing interactions are juicier and more saliva-inducing. The restraint is attractive, and the back-palate weighting of flavor similarly makes for charming drinking. 12.6% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2024-2033.

Erin Larkin - Wine Advocate (Dec 20, 2024)The complexity and flintiness are so enticing, with sliced apples, lemons, minerals and gunpowder. JamesSuckling.comI always love this wine and despite the vintage tribulations, the Coddington retains its signature vineyard character, one of generousness and exuberance. Ripe and rich, within the context of the vintage, more open than the tightly wound Hunting Hill. There is a little ripe stonefruit, some biscuit and cream. Drink from 2025 - 2030.

Jane Skilton MW - Inside BurgundyQuite a tangy number, with green apple, lemon/lime, fennel, a slight smoked almond thing, and some pastry dough. It jumps around a bit, has some flecks of green though it, quite some lemony bite, lots of flinty texture, though it feels maybe a little sharp and rolled up on the finish. It’s a good wine, though kind of edgy as at now, with lemon zest to close. I reckon it will soften and improve with a few more years; it certainly has the acid line to underwrite that. And in that respect, there’s maybe something of a young Hunter Semillon character about it, which leads me to this conclusion. It could well be a bit of a dark horse. Drink: 2025 - 2033+

Brilliant pale straw to straw colour with a greenish tinge around the edges and a watery hue. The refined medium bodied palate is amply endowed with ripe peach and pear fruits which are intermeshed with dried honey, bees wax, citrusy nougat and spice elements. 2022 Kumeu River Mates Vineyard ChardonnayKumeu, NEW ZEALAND$115. 00Bottle$1380.00 DozenABV: 13%Closure: StelvinOther Reviews....
The nose on this 2022 Mate's Vineyard Chardonnay leads with candied bananas, pineapple husk, white peach and a hint of lychee, and the edges of the aromatics are feathered with preserved citrus, brine, curry leaf and apple skins. In the mouth, the wine is powered by supercharged fruit; it is crystalline in its way, an attribute that I have long-since associated with the Chardonnays from Kumeu River. The flavor is sapid and palate-staining, with just enough salt and savory spices in the fruit to make it super complex as well as powerful. It is precisely folded like origami, each crease in service of the overall shape. A wine that offers much and assumes nothing. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2023 - 2037.

Erin Larkin - Wine Advocate (Sep 22, 2023)The 2022 Maté's Vineyard Chardonnay offers tension, power and an unrelenting sense of moving forward as if your palate has been put on a travelator. This is its 30th anniversary vintage. Currently it's closed and young with little aromatic generosity. There's nevertheless purity and a real sense of density. The richness is there but it's held within a brace of tension, ensuring precision and focus. After a couple of days, it loosens up a little so if you're thinking of opening it early, which I don't recommend, decanting may be your friend. I probably prefer the 2021 for its additional austerity but that may be me being subjective rather than objective. Drink 2025-2035.

The 2022 Hunting Hill Chardonnay is mouthfilling and obvious in its outlay of flavor in the mouth—yellow peach, apricot, Golden Delicious apple, beeswax/lanolin and ripe lime flesh. The flutter of acidity that feathers the fruit is compelling and alluring in its power and juiciness. An exciting wine. It's a wine I want to drink (I will; the perks) and a wine I am enjoying considering too. It's intellectual and sensorial/corporeal in equal measure. The Hunting Hill Vineyard was planted in 1982 and overlooks Mate's Vineyard. This is a pleasurable, exciting, fleshy, complex, salty, kaleidoscopic wine. Excellent. Recommended. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2023 - 2037.

Erin Larkin - Wine Advocate (Sep 22, 2023)The 2022 Chardonnay Hunting Hill is an impressive, focused style. It has a sense of energy, being almost buoyant with the movement of a skimming stone across your palate. There's a powerful core of fruit here and it has plenty of substance within its no-more-than medium-bodied core before kerpow! It fires home with an almost spicy kick. Clever oak use, reminiscent of toasted nuts, meets restrained flavors of lemon and lime bitter and nectarine fruit. A wine that's still in its cocoon so give it time. It may even have the edge of Maté's... Big call. Drink 2024-2035.

The 2022 Coddington Chardonnay leads with lemon balm/oil, green-olive brine, crème brûlée top (a.k.a. scorched brown sugar), peach fuzz, and an abundance of orchard fruit. In the mouth, kiwi fruit acidity (a.k.a. juicy, sweet, tart) defines the perimeters of the flavors and beckons you in for another, closer look. It's very, very good, a distinct wine, pure, all aspects delineated and deliberate. I like this. It feels orderly and mathematical. If the wine had a sound, it would be a straight-pace bowl at the wickets, one flying out of stumps (name a better sound, I'll wait). It's not that immediately obvious, though; it builds and takes a while to assert itself, and I like that too. Very good. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2023 - 2037.

Erin Larkin - Wine Advocate (Sep 22, 2023)The 2022 Coddington Chardonnay has breadth and depth. Its rounded and shapely curves seem to shimmy as if it was comfortably settling onto a bean bag, finding its place. Honeysuckle, pear and melon meet spiced oak. The concluding texture is well considered and cleverly done with tension. The new oak (25%) provides a corset for the wine to sit within and tightens it up, as if the wine is held by a pair of control pants. Drink 2023-2033.

Much like Tyrrell’s Vat 47, Kumeu River Chardonnay is a rare bird, in that they make such beautiful Chardonnay from a fairly warm and humid climate.
Pear and white peach, spiced pastries, a little mint and almond, floral too. It’s succulent and fleshy, all that nutty pastry but with tight acidity, a slight herbal/cucumber flavour gives it a lift and adds complexity, flinty and dusty/chalky, with a long bright finish cinched with lemon zest, lime and quiet perfume. James SucklingI first visited Kumeu River back in 2000, and bought a few bottles of the 1999 Maté’s Chardonnay, and quite a few of their red wines too.
A little struck match, hazelnut, grapefruit and white peach, a fair amount of sweet spice too. It’s dry, has lots of crunch and energy, distinctly flinty, hazelnut skin grip, grapefruit, ginger and lime, intense and tightly wound, maybe a little quinine and cucumber skin, and a long gently bitter finish of precision and super length. Outstanding. A great Chardonnay here. Drink 2023 - 2030+.

James SucklingIn my not-so-humble opinion, if Te Mata Estate Coleraine is New Zealand’s greatest red wine, then Kumeu Maté’s is probably their greatest white wine. People seem to dig these emphatic statements, so I’m here to provide them. Any arguments? Good, I thought not.
Struck match, ginger, pink grapefruit, green pear, hazelnut, cut fennel and white flowers. It’s bony, tight and very flinty and ‘mineral’, with ripe lemon and zest, a subtle chicken stock/umami flavour, white mushroom and spice, firm and dry, a little dirt under the nails, and gap-toothed charm, a wild and unfettered beauty, and all the length and energy you could ask for. Superb. So wild, but so at ease with itself. Or something like that. Drink 2024 - 2032+.

Kumeu River winemaker Michael Brajkovich MW has hailed 2019 as “An exceptional vintage of unsurpassed quality”. Given the general conservative nature of the team when discussing their wines, this is high praise indeed. Chardonnay from Kumeu River, and specifically their single vineyard offerings, are some of the finest expressions not only from New Zealand, but from anywhere in the world. The wines are known for incredibly high levels of complexity and intensity, with stunning layers of aromas and flavours.
Hunting Hill is very distinctive in its terroir typicity, with piercing lemon/lime fruit lift and florality on the nose, richness and volume in the mouth followed by lingering acidity and minerality on the finish. This is an absolute classic example of how great the Chardonnay grape can be: A beautifully powerful, yet elegant and complex wine.

On a slope overlooking Maté's Vineyard. Replanted in 2000. Made in exactly the same way as Coddington but always a bit tenser.
High-toned, tight and very sophisticated. The sort of wine that demands comparison with fine white burgundy. Real integrity and depth. Dry (not sweet) and with light grip on the palate. You could drink this now but you shouldn't; it will so clearly improve, deepen in flavour while retaining its admirable structure and vitality. Much more 'mineral' than the Coddington. Real tingle here. I'm sure Michael Brajkovich won't thank me for the comparison but it does rather remind me in structure of one of Rafael Palacios's finest Valdeorras single-vineyard bottlings. (And those are the wines that remind me of a great Puligny …).

The single-vineyard Coddington wine is strongly coloured and richly ripe in the yellow peach and apricot spectrum, with a background of toasted oak and caramelised hazelnut. It is the biggest style in their range, and satisfyingly rich as such, but also nicely balanced with its acidity.

From the Coddingtons' vineyard. Hand-harvested, whole-bunch pressed, indigenous-yeast fermentation, 100% barrel fermentation, 100% malolactic conversion. 11 months' maturation in barrel.
Quite broad on the nose and more obviously fruity (rather than savoury) than the Estate Chardonnay 2019, though it will obviously take on more subtlety with time. Pretty impressive finish to the palate, on which mandarin and passion-fruit flavours reverberate.

Mate’s Vineyard is always the last site picked each year. In 2019 the grapes certainly had the distinctive Mendoza millerandage, giving many small berries along with the normal sized ones, and as a result a wonderfully concentrated palate texture and fruit richness. Although still somewhat shy on the nose coming out of the barrel, with bottle age the full palette of complex aromas and bouquet of this wonderful wine will be gradually and seductively revealed.

Made in just the same way as all the Kumeu River single-vineyard Kumeu 2019 Chardonnays.
Fuller than the Hunting Hill but with much more framework and tension than the Coddington. Already so pleasing! With that extra breadth plus undertow. Fantastic length. Creamy texture. One for hedonists – by which I don't mean it's at all sweet. But it's richer than the Hunting Hill yet still has that New Zealand purity of fruit. Who could resist this? New Zealand Chardonnay at its finest. Perhaps slightly less burgundian than the Hunting Hill.

2021 Kusuda RieslingMartinborough, NEW ZEALAND$86. 99Bottle$1043.88 DozenABV: 13%Closure: StelvinHiro Kusuda was born in Tokyo where he worked as a lawyer before a stint in Australia. Along the way his love affair with wine and winemaking grew, and eventually he set off to complete his studies at Geisenheim in Germany before moving to Martinborough in New Zealand to make hand crafted Pinot Noir. Kusuda is known for attention to detail, to the point that each berry is picked individually at harvest by his Japanese friends that fly out each year to assist. Naturally this precision comes at a cost, in particular the miniscule volumes produced, and as such stocks are extremely limited.

The 2021 Riesling leads with salted lime, green apple skins, preserved citrus and cheesecloth. The palate is rich and fleshy, with a fine spool of acid that weaves the fruit and phenolics together as one. This textural wine has a long future in front of it. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2023-2037.

Full bottle 1,296 g. Grown in a leased vineyard block on the original Martinborough Terrace. Very dry January and February with heavy rain at the end of March. Hand-picked with careful selection 4–6 April at 20–22 Brix. Whole-bunch pressed, settled for 72 hours with bentonite. Fermented in tank for 16 days. Bottled 25 August 2020. Production: 3,851 bottles (2,000 cork-stoppered and 1,851 screwcapped) plus 69 magnums. TA 6.8 g/l, pH 2.91, RS 1.9 g/l.
Very lively, floral nose. Cutting acidity and a bit hard on the end. Less obvious fruit than, say, the 2020 Rheingau Riesling trocken from Eva Fricke that I have just been tasting. But it’s certainly pure and precise and I should imagine it will age well. And it’s in stark contrast to the over-perfumed, over-sweetened NZ Rieslings that have predominated. Drink 2022 - 2028.

Bone-dry riesling with lime-citrus, green apple, oyster-shell, mineral and a suggestion of wildflowers. A taut, high-energy wine with impressive purity and power. While it can be appreciated now it should develop well with bottle age.
