The 2020 vintage was slightly cooler than the average growing season, resulting in wines with more profound character and depth. Blair Walter noting: "We have great expectations for the 2020 wines." Fruit sourced for their wines are fully organic and follow biodynamic viticulture, ensuring the highest quality fruit arrives at the winery. From there winemaking is intentionally hands off with gravity flow, wild yeasts, wild malo, and an avoidance of fining and filtration to help preserve the expression of its terroir.

Felton Road farms four properties totaling 32 ha in the Bannockburn sub-region of Central Otago. The fruit for this wine is mostly grown on the Elms vineyard in Blocks 2, 6, 8 & 9; plus approximately 10% coming from the Cornish Point vineyard. There are a range of altitudes and aspects, with the soils composed mostly of deep alluvial schist gravels.

    Notes from the winery....
Aromas of elderflower and stone fruit, hints of pineapple and baking spice, concluding with chalk and stones. The palate is broad and encompassing with real power and concentration of fruit from this low yielding and cooler vintage. The luscious fruit weight is tempered by the vivacious acidity bringing closure and great length. A classic Bannockburn Chardonnay that is not fined or filtered thereby retaining all of its “somewhereness”.

    $839.88 Dozen

Felton Road farms four properties totaling 32 ha in the Bannockburn sub-region of Central Otago. Block 2 is positioned on a gentle east facing slope immediately north of Block 3 on The Elms vineyard and was planted in 1992.
Classic citrus flowers and zest, very linear and single minded. This is a clue to the palate; a shockwave of citrus and stone, with laser sharp focus, only allowing the hints of nuts and toast to show through a long, long finish. Texturally the wine is full but kept tight with a fine minerality and immense precision.

Felton Road farms four properties totaling 32 ha in the Bannockburn sub-region of Central Otago. Block 6 is positioned on a north facing slope immediately south of Block 5 on The Elms vineyard and was planted in 1993.
Riper and more boldly fruited than what is typical for a Felton Road Chardonnay, but this is what is consistently delivered from the steeper and more elevated, north facing, Block 6 site. The heaviness must be taken in context, as it still possesses a subtle hand, the tight acidity and fine minerality that has become the hallmark of our Chardonnays. A fascinating contrast.

A grape which is yet to gain a foothold in Australia, wines like this would suggest that it would be no surprise to see some significant interest in it in the near future. From Sicily, this is cracking value. Gleaming gold in colour, the nose offers exuberant aromatics with notes of orange rinds, nectarines, lemon curd, stone fruits, ripe peaches and apricots. Seamless in structure, there is a creamy texture, impressive balance and very good length. This is perhaps the best example of this grape I have seen from these guys. Delicious. Enjoy it over the next three to four years. Drink 2025-2029.

From Sicily, it seems we rarely see examples from any other maker of this attractive white variety. A bit of a shame as, based on this, it is a most worthwhile variety. Still, as they say in the classics, love the one you’re with. A deep golden yellow hue here, the nose has a lovely gingery note along with florals, spices, citrus, tropical touches and herbs with a hint of stonefruits. This is an attractive textural style of medium length. Enjoy this wine now and over the next four to five years which represents great value. Drink 2024-2029.

This Catarratto comes from the ‘Masso’ cru, which is one of the highest vineyards on the Feudo Montoni Estate at 700m and named because of its rocky-sandy soil. The vines are aged between 55 and 60 years old but have been grafted onto very old bush vines producing fruit that’s dense and full flavoured. This iron rich soil contributes to a wine that is intensely fresh and mineral. After concrete fermentation, the wine is kept on lees for 6 months with some batonnage before being bottled.

Medium deep straw yellow with golden tinges. Ripe aromas and flavors of apricot, balsamic oils, bergamot and guava. Round and tactile but also very fresh in the mouth with hints of orange oil complicating flavors of grapefruit and mountain herbs in the mouth. Finishes long, multilayered and dense. An outstanding Catarratto. Owner Fabio Sireci tells me these are old vines of the Catarratto Lucido variety, a rare situation as the grape produces very little at the heights these vines are planted (roughly 750 meters above sea level). Still, it smells and tastes of the Lucido variety and so I’m not arguing. Drink 2019-2022.

Brilliant pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Aromas of fresh pears, limes and subtle tropical fruits spring from the glass with fresh herb, stony notes and spice also present. Generous lime and pear flavours infused with fresh herbs have a well rounded feel. Finishes dry and fresh with stony mineral elements on the back palate. Based in the northern Italian region of Trentino, Foradori focus on the traditional varieties Teroldego, Nosiola, and Manzoni. Much of the production is the often-forgotten Teroldego grape, and Elisabetta Foradori is largely responsible for resurrecting it from the brink of extinction, and producing some of Italy’s finest, most age-worthy wines. Their plantings of Teroldego are situated in the Campo Rotaliano region where the former flood plain has deposited huge quantities of limestone, granite, porphyry and fine sand, perfect for growing Teroldego. Nearby in the hills is their Fontanasanta (holy water) estate which is planted to Nosiola and Incrocio Manzoni on the rich red clay and white limestone soils. While Elisabetta is still very much a strong presence, much of the winemaking duties are now handled by her children, Emilio, Theo and Myrtha.

Manzoni is a genetic cross between Riesling and Pinot Blanc, and in the hands of Foradori is an alluring and aromatic white of huge complexity. Verging towards an amber wine due to a period of fermentation on skins, Fontanasanta Manzoni Bianco is a salty, vibrant and lip smacking example that you'll want to spend time exploring.

Slightly deeper in colour than the Beerenauslese, the Trockenbeeren Auslese displays a bright straw core with golden edges and a very pale gold hue. Potent aromas of ripe apricots draped in honey waft from the glass with ripe peach, hints of marmalade and subtle raisin notes also evident. Denser and richer than the Beerenauslese it has outstanding intensity of flavour and a thick viscous mouthfeel. Rich, lusciously textured honeyed apricots and peaches saturate the palate with elements of ripe pineapple, marmalade, lemon and botrytised raisiny characters ensuing. Finishes fresh with cleansing acidity, showing great harmony with the rich lush honey botrytised fruit. An aftertaste of honey, ripe apricots, peaches, ripe pineapple and raisiny botrytis characters seemingly going on forever. Magnificent.

The Framingham Trockenbeerenauslese is a revelation for the dessert wine lover. This wine really overdelivers. Rich and complex layers of intense raisin, sultana and currants. Toffee hints can be found, whilst a clean yet lip-smacking finish is there. This will give the Germans a run for their money. New Zealand delivers yet again

Full, bright, moderately deep golden colour with lemon-green hues, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is bright and vibrant with opulent and decadent aromas of ripe tropical fruit and citrus fruits along with marmalade, honey and nectar, raisins and suggestions of crystallised fruits, musk and a hint of caramel. Very sweet on palate and light-bodied, the palate is incredible richness and opulence, with sensational unctuousness and viscosity. The flavours of ripe tropical and citrus fruit are enriched honey, marmalade, exotic florals, musk and nectar, unfolding the fill the palate. The fruit and richness forms a deep and dense core with great presence, and fine lacy acidity lends cut, energy and tension. The wine carries to a decadently deep and plush, honied finish with crystallised fruits, raisins and hints of caramel. This is an incredibly rich, decadent and opulent, sweet, botrytised Riesling, with nectar, honey, musk and raisiny flavours forming a deep and dense palate core. Serve as a liqueur, and with caramel desserts or blue cheeses over the next 10+ years. Selective hand-picked fruit from 3 tries, at 44.2 Brix, 75% from the ’Middle’ and 25% from the ‘Back’ block old vines, with 100% botrytised, raisined berries, fermented 65% in stainless kegs and barrels and 35% seasoned wood to 9.0% alc. and 315 g/L RS.

Brilliant straw pale gold colour with a watery hue. Powerful aromas of honeyed apple and apricot overlay hints of ripe lime, marmalade and light spice. Rich and super luscious yet at the same time remarkably fresh and light on its feet, honey drenched flavours of red apples, lemon and peaches coat the palate over elements of marmalade and dried pineapple. Beautifully refined fresh acidity acts as the perfect foil to the rich honeyed fruit. Exceptionally long aftertaste of honeyed peaches, red apples, citrusy pineapple and a touch of marmalade.

Blended from three auslese picks with 100% botrytis but not fully-raisined berries. Fermented in stainless barrels. Only the third beerenauslese made by Framingham. Intensely aromatic riesling with great weight and intensity held together by a lovely line of acidity. Very pure, with honey from botrytis but still showing good varietal character with tropical and tree fruit flavours. Very long with a mouth-watering finish.

Of the estate's 15 hectares on the gravels of the Wairau Valley, half of those are planted to Riesling. Production of other varieties is supplemented by purchased fruit. In 2017, the deluges that made the vintage challenging for varieties like Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir meant a decent amount of botrytis in the late-ripening Riesling. There's a full range of noble-sweet prädikats as a result, including a stunning beerenauslese and a super sweet trockenbeerenauslese.
A stupendous effort, the 2017 F Series Riesling Beerenauslese features gorgeous aromas and flavors of dried apricot and candied pineapple. It's incredibly sweet and rich (220 grams per liter residual sugar) yet balanced by a crisp edge of lime zest. I wouldn't hesitate to put it up against some top German competition. It should age well for a decade or two. Drink 2018-2035.

The domaine of Francois Cotat is a tiny 4 hectares, and has been making some of the most exceptional wines of the Loire since 1947. Their success and individuality can be attributed to François' intense passion for creating the finest wine possible and his exceptionally placed vineyards. Prudent viticulture combined with densely planted vines, ultra-low yields and relatively late harvesting produces fantastically flavoursome fruit. Whilst not Biodynamic, Francois uses organic fertilisers and racks according to the phases of the moon. His incredible wines develop with age and, in the best vintages, can be cellared for more than 30 years.

This used to be called "Jeunes Vignes" but François has been vinifing “Caillottes” separately since 2005; the vineyard name refers to a type of soil found in Sancerre—very rocky and chalky. This is a wine that will keep and improve for many years.

François Cotat's 2022 Caillottes is a lighter-bodied, delicate wine with fine tension and texture, which Cotat believes is down to the vineyard's chalky soils. It's aromatically restrained with subtle honey and biscuity notes meeting freshness. Despite Cotat's reputation for picking late and recent warm vintages (such as 2020) showing some high alcohols knocking the balance, this is just 12.8% and all the better for it. Drink 2023-2033.

If you've ever attended a classical concert, there's a brief pause between movements of a symphony; in it, there's a poised hush and a sense of crackling anticipation. The 2022 Monts Damnés reminds me of this hush. It is so very quiet, with a citrusy twinkle in its eye. Despite its initial delicacy and light body, its structure crescendos towards the wine's finale, offering a sense of body, muscle and sinew that requires more time in bottle. I'd happily wait a while. Drink 2024-2038.

This vineyard is where François has his oldest vines, these days the average age is about 40 years because he has had to replant many of the very old vines as the Sauvignon is susceptible to viruses as it ages and so past 60 years old the vine is usually close to unproductive. This vineyard produces the most flamboyant wines in this collection, there are subtle notes of orchard fruit and more power but don't let that fool you as it is all aligned to incredible finesse, cool acidity and tactile minerality. Lay back and get comfortable with the 2022 Grand Côte. It is a delightfully balanced style with a tender finesse, filling the mouth with a sense of purity. While it has an almost lacy character, there's no absence of substance or structure. It's restrained aromatically with delicate violets, florals, nectarine flavors and a distinct stony character. It draws out on the long, chalky, almost sinew-like finish. A delight to drink now, but knowing Cotat, there's no hurry to pull the cork. Drink 2023-2035.

While the 2021 Sancerre Les Monts Damnés is a light bodied wine with a sense of roundness at first, there's no mistaking this is a forceful, grippy style. While this wine was ready to be bottled when tasted in Cotat's tasting room, the scarcity of glass had left the bottling as yet undone in July 2022. While severely affected by frost, the fruit that made it to the finish line marks a return to a more classic style of Sancerre with its light bodied yet powerful style. You can expect fragrant citrus, boxwood and elderflower characters which marks a contest with the richness of the previous three vintages. It is forceful, spicy and grippy with firm acidity and a jalapeño-like scent on the long finish. Drink 2023-2037.

The 2020 Sancerre La Grande Côte is a fine wine with a piercing nose of floral and flint. While it may be dry, it offers a sensation of sweet fruit and high alcohol (14.5%), which Cotat compares to the ripe 2009 and 1990 vintages. Being late-picked and on a south slope, these grapes get ripe, and in this vintage, I can't help but think that the balance has been slightly knocked by this ripeness. That said, it offers delectable texture and sinew and remains an impressive wine. Tasting the 2009 Cul de Beaujeu soon after, high alcohol (15%) remains evident with bottle age. Drink 2021 - 2034.

There's a gentleness to the 2020 Sancerre Caillotttes and a sensation of sweetness despite its evidently being a dry white. Open, seductive and textural, it offers delightful floral characters and ripe fruit. There's a touch of alcoholic warmth on the finish, but that’s nitpicking. Drink 2021 - 2035.
