2020 Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Riesling SpatleseMosel, GERMANY$450. 00Bottle$5400.00 DozenABV: 8%Closure: StelvinOther Reviews....
The 2020 Riesling Scharzhofberger Spätlese A.P. #6 reflects numerous parcels and pickings with largely healthy fruit but slight botrytis influence. Quince and white peach hover between fresh and jellied, overlain with heady, musky perfume of peony and narcissus. But there are also elements of honeydew and mint – especially on the polished, delicate palate – to supply the cooling side to flavors that is familiar from other Egon Müller 2020s. The superbly sustained finish soothes yet invigorates and refreshes, with musky and chamomile floral billowing, cooling traces of mint, and lightly stimulating hints of wintergreen and cress. There is no question that this wine has an especially serious future, even by exalted Scharzhof standards. Drink 2021-2050.

David Schildknecht - VinousSpring-blossom, honeysuckle and gardenia aromas pour from the glass of this Spätlese, which effortlessly marries mangosteen and passion-fruit ripeness with serious concentration and great finesse. Racy acidity drives the very long, precise finish. Drink or hold.

Stuart Pigott - JamesSuckling.comThe 2020er Scharzhofberger Riesling Spätlese AP 06 was fermented down to sweet levels of residual sugar. It proves still quite reduced at first (smoke, marine herbs and sea breeze, and bacon driven scents) before gradually revealing its amazingly complex nose made of spices, white flowers, vineyard peach, cassis, mint lozenge, orange peel, apricot, and star fruit. The wine proves intense and beautifully focused on the intense yet impeccably balanced palate. Despite all the intensity and complexity at play, the wine remains stunningly fresh and light-footed right into the finish. The minute-long aftertaste is all about deep citrusy fruits and spices. This Spätlese is an incredible success! Drink 2030-2060.

2020 Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Riesling KabinettMosel, GERMANY$350. 00Bottle$4200.00 DozenABV: 9%Closure: StelvinOther Reviews....
The “regular” 2020 Riesling Scharzhofberger Kabinett (bearing A.P. #3) leads with quince and peach accented by mint, cress, ginger and lemon, setting up an overall impression of coolness, but also of brightness, with stimulating cut and pungency analogous to that of the corresponding Braune Kupp. In the background is a greenhouse-like amalgam of flowers and foliage. The phenolic concentration here belies a vintage with relatively generous yields even as the efficacious acidity and levity defy preconceptions concerning a year marked by summer heat and drought. The multifaceted finish, transparent to wet stone underpinnings, is tongue-tinglingly vibrant. Here is a Riesling Kabinett to really grab and hold your attention even as it delivers consummate refreshment and a bit of thought-provoking intrigue to accompany its entertainment value. Drink 2021-2035.

David Schildknecht - VinousVery youthful, cool and pristine, this is an extremely elegant sleek and focused Kabinett. Although analytically there must be quite a bit of unfermented grape sweetness here, you barely feel it, so uplifting is the mineral freshness that drives this joyful Saar riesling. Very long finish. Drink or hold.

Stuart Pigott - JamesSuckling.comThe 2020er Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett was fermented down to barely fruity-styled levels of residual sugar. It offers a superbly refined and delicately herbal and zesty nose of white mint, vineyard peach, whipped almond cream, tangerine, orange blossom, and some fresher (green) elements. The wine starts off on the juicy and almost smooth side but progressively develops more cut as zesty and spicy elements join the party on the palate. The wine develops all the classic hallmarks of a Kabinett with energy and finesse and finesse in the finish and leaves one with a superbly focused and spicy feel in the off-dry aftertaste. This is quite a beauty! Drink 2028-2045.

Apple seed and apple wood accents lend decisive counterpoint on both nose and palate to the 2020 Riesling Scharzhof’s dominant, crunchy apple and zesty lemon fruit. Suggestions of apple blossom hover throughout. The feel is firm, and the lingering finish offers refreshment as well as stimulating cut and piquancy. (The source vineyards for this large cuvée are once again largely Saarburger Rausch, Wiltinger Braunfels and Oberemmeler Rosenberg.) Drink 2021-2029.

Stuart Pigott - JamesSuckling.comThe 2020er Riesling Scharzhof is a fully off-dry wine made from Estate holdings in the Wiltinger Braunfels, Oberemmeler Rosenberg, and Saarburger Rausch. It offers a refined and subtly aromatic nose of herbs, yellow peach, apricot blossom, pear, lavender, floral elements, cassis, and whipped cream, all wrapped into some residual scents from the spontaneous fermentation. The wine proves delicately smooth and coats the palate with suave richness of yellow fruits. This fruity-smooth side then quickly gives way to a more focused and refreshing side in the long and well-delineated finish. The aftertaste is all about spices and citrusy fruits with just a light touch of richer flavors including apricot and pineapple. The 2020 rendition of the Scharzhof has the fruity side of traditional Kabinett wines at this Estate (also as the acid feeling is slightly lower) rather than the usual off-dry balance of recent years. Drink 2025-2040.

2019 Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Riesling KabinettMosel, GERMANY$360. 00Bottle$4320.00 DozenABV: 9%Closure: StelvinOther Reviews....
Shimmering and pale but brilliant and slightly lime-greenish in color, the 2019 Scharzhofberger Kabinett is crystal clear and precise on the pure, fresh and coolish, highly refined and complex flinty-scented nose that is unmistakably Egon Müller's "regular" Scharzhofberger Kabinett (there is an Alte Reben bottling for the auction in September, too). Lush yet precise and enormously piquant and salty on the palate, it displays crisp white stone fruit aromas and the crystalline mineral nerviness of the iron-rich gray slate soils that eat up the residual sugar easily so that the taste is just electrifying and salty yet not really sweet. This is a frisky, mouthwateringly salty and piquant Riesling of remarkable precision, finesse and elegance, with picture-book tension for Kabinett. The finish is highly stimulating and incomparable. I dare to say that this Kabinett is my favorite this year due to its precision and coolish, precise nature. Tasted from AP 3-20 in April and June 2020.

Stuart Pigott - JamesSuckling.comThe 2019er Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett was fermented down to barely fruity-styled levels of residual sugar. This bright-white colored wine offers a rather subtle and, at the beginning, even shy nose driven by reduction. After a little airing, absolutely textbook flavors of white peach, white flowers, and slate emerge from the glass. These classic flavors for a Scharzhofberger carry over onto the palate, where they are joined by some zesty acidity and a gorgeous touch of whipped cream. Everything is simply in balance and this sense of completeness also drives the gorgeous finish and after-taste. This hugely impressive Kabinett is without doubt one of the finest at this Estate over the last few years!

The bright colored 2019 Riesling Scharzhof displays very fine Saar typicity on the nose. This is like a spring mountain river full of Riesling rolling over crushed slate. It is highly delicate but lush and sexy, with great precision, crystalline acidity and lingering salinity, finishing with just the right amount of residual sugar. Impressively long and tensioned on the pure and stimulating finish, this is just gorgeous and possibly the most fascinating Scharzhof I have tasted in 20 years. The times of calling this is a Best Buy are long gone, but if you ant to taste the DRC of Riesling, you should definitely try it. Tasted in April 2020.

This bright white-colored wine offers a gorgeous nose made of white peach, apricot blossom, a hint of cream, smoke, slate, and still quite some residual scents from its spontaneous fermentation. The wine proves gorgeously intense and even almost powerful on the palate at first, but then develops great finesse in the long and subtle finish. Some minty herbs join the gorgeous flavors of white peach, chalky minerals, and a hint of whipped cream in the delicately airy and off-dry tasting after-taste. This wine proves a huge success but one which will benefit from a few years of bottle aging to develop its full aromatic finesse.

The grapes for the 2023 Palo Blanco were harvested earlier than ever, picked even earlier than the grapes from Taganana. It was a warm year, but the wine feels more like it's from a cool climate; it has a moderate 11.5% alcohol and is volcanic and less reductive than in previous years, fine-boned and sharp, with a vibrant palate, effervescent acidity (7.1 grams and a pH of 3.05) and a dry chalkiness that gives it salinity. It's approachable but should also age in bottle. 13,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2024. Drink 2024-2034.

The heat from late August didn't affect much the grapes that were used for the 2022 Palo Blanco, as they are picked much later than the grapes from other zones of Tenerife. So, the 2022 vintage in Los Realejos is a lot fresher than in Taganana or La Orotava. In fact, I liked the palate of this 2022 better than that of the 2021; it's vibrant, lovely and fresh. The nose is still a little reductive, and the notes of flowers and herbs take time to emerge. 13,000 bottles and 167 magnums produced. It was bottled in July 2023. Drink 2024 - 2030.

The 2022 Táganan Blanco has a mellow nose with notes of ripe yellow fruit, dried flowers, aromatic herbs and crushed rocks. 2022 was extremely dry and delivered healthy grapes that were harvested early, and the wine kept a moderate 12% alcohol and very high acidity (7.1 grams) that give it a lively palate with citrus freshness and a very tasty, salty finish. In 2008, the group bought their first vineyard in Ribeira Sacra, then took control of vineyards on the north side of Tenerife, and followed with a single patch of Tinta Amarela in Extremadura. Finally, in 2012, the group began working with a site in Almansa, where Jose lives and works, planted to Garnacha Tintorera. 2020 was also very dry, like 2019 in Santiago del Teide in the south of Tenerife. The grapes for the 2020 Benje Blanco were picked earlier than ever, starting in mid-August. The wine fermented by plot in concrete with indigenous yeasts, and 20% of the volume matured in an oval 2,500-liter oak foudre and the rest in concrete, where half of it developed a thin layer of flor yeasts that give it a sharper texture rather than aromas or flavors, as these yeasts eat glycerin and make finer wines. So, the flor is only in 40% of the wine, less than in 2019. The difference here is that they stopped controlling the temperature (something they already did with Palo Blanco) and they stopped using 228-liter barrels and moved to 350-liter barrels from Chassagne-Montrachet. It makes the wine more expressive of the soils and with less fruit character. All this has increased clarity and definition in the white wines from Tenerife. This is livelier. 15,000 bottles and 150 magnums were produced. It was bottled in June 2021. Drink 2022 - 2027.

I was blown away by a magnum of the white 2020 Palo Blanco I drank a few days before I tasted it again with its creators. Palo Blanco is the name of a zone in the village of Los Realejos in Tenerife, one of the finest locations for Listán Blanco (Palomino). In 2020 they used the grapes from five plots (they started with only one and 6,600 bottles in 2016), which means they have been able to increase volumes and, thankfully, also quality! The new plot is at 850 meters, so the grapes bring more freshness. These are always the last grapes they pick in Tenerife, even in an early harvest like 2020. The destemmed grapes were pressed and the juice let to settle for 12 to 24 hours and then fermented with indigenous yeasts in concrete without temperature control. Sixty-five percent of the wine matured in 2,500-liter oak foudres and the rest in neutral 350-liter barrels with lees. There is a smoky and spicy, flinty touch and a vibrant palate with a spark of acidity that makes the wine very long and tasty. This now plays in the major league. 2020 saw the earliest harvest ever for this wine. 11,000 bottles and 200 magnums were filled in December 2021. Drink 2022 - 2030.

They consider 2019 an exceptional vintage for this cuvée, which comes from four plots of centenary cordón trenzado braided vines that ripened properly and earlier than normal, avoiding an unusually warm October. The wine has a moderate 12% alcohol and great freshness and acidity for the variety and especially after having gone through full malolactic. In 2019, 70% of the wine matured in well-seasoned, neutral oval 2,500-liter oak foudres and the rest with fine lees in 350-liter oak barrels. They kept adding vineyards for this wine, so they were able to produce a little more wine. This is a wine that showed them that fermenting at higher temperatures resulted in less fruit and more soil character in the wines. There's always a Burgundian feeling to this wine, sharp and precise and very long, layered and with depth. This follows the path of the 2018. 10,000 bottles and 30 magnums were produced. It was bottled in December 2020. Drink 2022 - 2029.

2018 Envinate Benje BlancoTenerife, SPAIN$42. 99Bottle$515.88 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkEnvínate, which literally translates as “Wine Yourself,” is the project of four young passionate winemakers: Roberto Santana (based in the Canaries), Jose Martinez (Almansa), Laura Ramos (Murcia) and Alfonso Torrente (Ribeira Sacra). The four met while studying oenology in Alicante in 2005 and formed a collective based on a shared philosophy of wine and a desire to explore the ancient, Atlantic influenced terroirs of western Spain.
In each region, they work old, previously abandoned vineyards, but importantly for a project with such spread, one of the team lives full time in each location, working the vineyards year round.
Benje refers to an area high above the cloud cover on the western edge of the Tiede volcano. It’s an area that produces markedly different wines, from the sappy freshness of the coastal zones but still carries the hallmark lightness of all of Envínate’s wines. Benje Tinto is straight Listan Prieto, Benje Blanco is Listan Blanco. Both are grown on a mixture of old ash and red clay at over 1000m above sea level.
Other Reviews....
The 2018 Benje Blanco comes from the south of the island and was produced with Listán Blanco, the local strain of Palomino. This is a blend of different plots of vey old vines at high altitude, 900 to 1,100 meters above sea level. The thing that is different about this wine is that 65% of the volume matured in concrete tanks under a veil of yeasts, flor, in search of a sharper texture rather than aromas or flavors, as these yeasts eat glycerin and make finer wines. The rest was aged in used 228-liter oak barrels with the lees and then was blended and bottled. This has lots of character, mixing the varietal notes with volcanic notes, and it is fresher (much fresher) than the 2018. There is a hint of flor on the palate, more of a texture than a set of flavors. The warm and cooler years are more challenging in the south of Tenerife (here) than in the north (Taganana and La Orotava). 2018 was much cooler, and the vines behaved well; the key is to keep the leaves because otherwise the grapes dehydrate rapidly. 21,500 bottles were produced. It was bottled in July 2019.

Migan and Palo Blanco are both very old vine wines from the Valle de la Orotava zone, although they don’t bear the D.O. stamp. The old vines are trained in the Trezendo fashion: braiding new shoots over older ones until the vines begin to resemble old dreadlocks weaving over the landscape. The terrain is flatter than Táganan, more conducive to farming. Migan is two parcels of Listan Negro, both over 100 years old, while Palo Blanco is a single vineyard from the town of Los Realejos planted on black volcanic soils.
Other Reviews....
An outstanding white from the Valle de la Orotava, the 2018 Palo Blanco is named after a zone or "paraje" from the village of Los Realejos that produced Listán Blanco of a strong and different personality. In 2018, they used a further two plots, one at 500 and the other one at 850 meters in altitude, all three planted with centenary "cordón trenzado" braided vines. This is only 11.5% alcohol and has great acidity, a pH of three and seven grams of acidity after full malolactic. Sixty-five percent of the volume matured in 2,500-liter oval oak vats and the rest in 228-liter barriques. This is sharp, vertical, mineral and austere, a white made with rocks—it's pure rock juice (think Vatan or Bageiras), the most mineral of the whites they make. It has some notes of chamomile and combines power and elegance. This is a groundbreaking, world-class white, way better than previous vintages. And it's made from a variety that people say is second class... second class to none! 9,700 bottles produced. It's the largest production to date, and it was bottled in January 2020.

Táganan is both the name of a village on the very north eastern tip of Tenerife and a local term for steep slope. Envínate make two reds and two whites from this village; Táganan Tinto and Blanco, which come from multiple old parcels and two crus, parcelas Campanario and Margalagua. All the wines are field blends containing a dizzying array of obscure local varieties grown on very old bush vines in the steep volcanic soils overlooking the ocean.
Other Reviews....
The most anticipated Envínate white since they had to stop making the single-vineyard Amogoje is here, the 2018 Táganan Campanario Blanco from a one-hectare vineyard they purchased in late 2017 from Antonio Delgado, who is old and cannot work it anymore and his sons are not involved in the vineyards. This is from vineyard in the village of Almáciga in a zone known as El Campanario (the bell tower), from a north-facing plot that's very close to the sea and planted with an unusual blend of grapes, mostly Forastera Gomera, Gual (known as Boal in Madeira) and Verdello plus of course Listán Blanco. The bottled wine is 12.5% alcohol with amazing freshness and incredible acidity readings, a pH of 3.05 and seven grams of acidity (measured in tartaric acid), if you think this is a subtropical island. It matured in neutral 600-liter oak barrels for 12 months without racking or any sulfur added to it. It has a golden color, from the varietal mix used. This comes from an amazing place that looks like a jungle (I was thinking of a coffee plantation in Peru or something like that), and it's incredible how fresh the wine is. This is the lower part of the vineyard they used to vinify and bottle separately, Amogoge. This is highly personal and somewhat reminds me of some whites from the island of La Palma with a somewhat medicinal undertone that makes it quite different. 1,300 bottles were filled in January 2020.

Beautifully textured, fresh and mouthfilling, flavours of peach, honeysuckle, pear and lime are backed by flinty mineral infused acidity which gives the dry finish a racy feel. Subtle fresh herb characters also kick in on the long zingy finish.

Stern, bracing mineral nose. Rich and full-bodied, the palate is very ripe and concentrated, but there's a firm mineral grip on the mid-palate. Structured and long, with considerable power on the finish. 2018 - 2026.
