Etna in north-east Sicily is better known for its reds than whites, but the best examples of the latter, made from the local grape Carricante, can be spectacular, somewhere between a Burgundian Aligoté and a top Soave in style. This is totally unoaked, but draws richness from six months of lees’ ageing. Stony and intense, with notes of lime, fennel and lemon juice, steely, palate-cleansing acidity and a mineral tang. Best drunk with the Mediterranean sun on your face, but it’ll cheer you up in winter too.

Stéphane Tissot is a tireless and vigorous promoter of individual sites and natural wines. He brings technological experience from his work in Australia and South Africa, and combines this with his ruthless yield reduction philosophy and very serious 'small batch' winemaking which is carried out as naturally as possible. Tissot plants mostly on clay and limestone, all sites are farmed biodynamically and yields are kept low, averaging only 30 h/l per hectare. Ferments are allowed to commence naturally and the still wines are bottled without filtration and little or no SO2 is added across the board. Vibrancy and fruit presence is a signature across all his wines. Given Stéphane is constantly experimenting and obsessively seeking improvements; he is at the forefront of the Jura revolution and produces terroir-driven wines of depth, intensity, interest and undeniable quality.
Tissot's Savagnin spends 33 months sous-voile, or under a veil of flor, before some time in bottle. The intent here is to achieve a good balance between the biological aging under flor and the varietal Savagnin character. In effect this presents as a mini Vin Jaune, loaded with spicy aromas, curry leaves, and grilled nuts sitting alongside the lemony and fresh flavours of clay-grown Savagnin..

Patchwork of sites for chardonnay. Organic/biodynamic farmed, zero sulphur as often is the way with Tissot.
It’s a lean and lighter expression but stacked with flinty, smoky elements and very saline overall. Green apple is the fruit connection, the rest is all stones and river pebbles and mineral water and brine. Racy, succulent to a puckering feel and ticklish to finish. It’s a distinct Patchwork release, complex but in a more quiet and compact frame. I still dig it. Lots. Drink 2023 - 2035.

The 2019 Les Bruyères Chardonnay is flintier, more rustic, more reductive with the classical bitter twist in the finish. The Trias soils always seem to give this wine a spicy Jura twang, and 2019 was a good year for the clay soils. It should develop nicely in bottle. Drink 2024-2030.

Savagnin is also known locally as Traminer, and this ancient variety is the specialty of the region. Stephane Tissot ages this wine in older barrels and he makes it much like a chardonnay. This topped up (ouillé) example is a powerful and textural style, the prominent acidity supporting an enormous degree of richness and depth of flavour.

The low-yielding biodynamic Savagnin grapes for these Vin Jaunes are hand-picked and the juice fermented in steel tanks. The mostly clay soils give wines of higher acidity (whereas limestone gives less acidity and more minerality), and strong backbone. After the primary fermentation the wine is part-filled (around 85%) into old barrels (228 lt. usually) and a 'flor' yeast veil or 'voile' develops on the surface of the wine, protecting it from oxidation and adding complex aromas and flavours to the wine. The barrels are stored in a cool but 'airy' cellar (not underground) for around 6-7 years so the dryer atmosphere causes the evaporation of water and therefore concentration of flavours and reduction of the wine volume. In fact, usually only 620ml. (the size of a Vin Jaune bottle) remains from a litre. This is very expensive wine to make, as not only is there a huge volume loss, but often some barrels need to be culled.
La Mailloche has a gentle east aspect and very degraded soils of Liassic clay. Another wine with good firmness and seductive weight with some nice bitterness.

The Clos de la Tour de Curon comes from the Bajocien limestone soils that surround the tower in Arbois and the various plots are incredibly close planted, up to 27,000 vines a hectare in places. Like the rest of the single-vineyard Chardonnays, this wine is matured in barrel for two years before it was bottled.
Other Reviews....
The 2018 harvest in Jura has been described as ‘quite warm’ to ‘very warm’ though best producers have managed well and frankly, no hail and frost is pretty refreshing. Tour du Curon is arguably the best site in all of Jura for white grapes, indeed, one of the best chardonnay sites on earth.
A bold wine, distinct, powerful, strongly saline, very savoury, direct, satiny, exceptionally long and profound in its layer and layers and layers of flavour. Perfume is no slouch, all salted cashew, ripe stone fruits, apple, ginger biscuits and floral things, so lovely to sniff on and evocative of the region. There will be a conversation about alcohol (15.5%) but the wine holds it all in neatly, though you’ve got no wallflower here. So much verity to the season too. Phenomenal depth, incredibly impressive wine, moreish, compelling, complex, so packed with detail. A truly symphonic wine. Drink 2021 - 2030.

Rose Massale is made with a rare mutated pink fruit-producing Chardonnay from cuttings propagated from 40 plants. It is sourced from different vineyards, 60% clay and 40% limestone, and it's a little bit more aromatic than normal Chardonnay. Stéphane Tissot is very excited and pleased with initial harvests of these grapes that are treated the same way as white chardonnay.

Chardonnay from old vines in Chateau Chalon. Sursis means 'suspended sentence', because the vineyard would need to be replanted with Savagnin in order to have the right to carry its appellation. Grown on marl with chalky stones, it is pure, firm and dry.

Les Graviers hails from five vineyards with vine age averaging over 60 years. Each plot contains a high proportion of limestone dominant soils which gives the wines from here a fine line of mineral tension and freshness.
Other Reviews....
Les Graviers is usually a cru that I put down the pecking order of Tissot’s wines, but in 2018, a year of chubbier, more potent chardonnay, it seemed to do the opposite and find that electricity and crackle I love from Tissot and Jura. It’s heady in scents of ripe apple, sea spray, flint, sandalwood and almonds. The palate is similar, opulent to a point but finds chalky pucker in texture and an amazing spine of saline acidity at its core. It has energy, vitality, drive and a general sense of deliciousness. A brilliant, wonderful and vibrant chardonnay. Pedigree plus. Drink 2021 - 2035.

Big, bold year for wines, lots of heat, lots of volume, lots of everything. Bruyeres one of the great, great sites of Jura and a visionary decision to plant from Stephane Tissot. This and vin jaune from the vineyard are epic.
It’s fragrant and full bodied but still manages to push an agenda of freshness and Jura ‘saline minerality’ through and through. Scents of sugar biscuit, ginger biscuit, green apple, preserved lemon, flavours pretty similar and a full salted biscuit finish. Lush texture, satiny though, succulent, puckers the palate with its saltiness and there’s layers of flavour, mineraly things, harmonious ripe fruit and brisk acidity. It’s such a complex, compelling, delicious wine. Kowtow at the throne. Drink 2021 - 2035.

This wine has spent around three years under flor; a sous voile wine. Stephane Tissot an outstanding spokesperson for Jura wines in general. This is the kind of wine that sets you on a righteous path. It’s an outstanding release.
So good. Addictive stuff. Powerful brown lime, sea spray and green apple scents, and importantly, just a hint of mustard powder. Linear in the palate, fine boned and juicy but with filigree of detail, incredible mineral vein, that sense of nuttiness, saline acidity and supreme length. Complexity, intensity, glory. This is so bloody good, and top of tree as an example of the sous voile style. A clear statement of how savagnin is grape royalty.

The 2021 Greco di Tufo Terre d'Uva opens with a bouquet of tropical green melon, exotic florals and a spritz of lime. This is texturally deep, almost oily in feel, balanced by saline-minerals and crisp green apple. The Terre d'Uva finishes with a bitter tension, pinching at the cheeks with sour citrus while leaving the mouth watering for more. This zesty Greco will win a lot of hearts. Drink 2023 - 2026.

Light and crisp yet possessing a nicely rounded mouthfeel, flavours of fresh pears and limes subtlety infused with fresh herbs are carried by a citrusy wet stone and mineral back drop. Neal Martin - VinousPicked 15th September from their own vineyard below Meursault, at 12.9% alcohol. Bottled just before harvest having been mostly made in foudre. A little meaty touch, very good weight, greengage and yellow plum. Opens out very well afterwards, relatively fleshy. Pretty, with a long finish.

Neal Martin - VinousRacked to tank in July, from foudre and 600 litre barrels. Almost all the grapes come from around Meursault. Excellent balance here with a line of concentration through the middle. Perfectly judged ripeness, more in white fruit. Textbook example, just a little oak toast but the fruit is the driver.

Cool, pure and very pretty aromas of roasted nut, petrol and a blend of white orchard fruit scents. There is both fine richness and volume to the solidly concentrated and intensely mineral-driven middle weight flavors that conclude in a youthfully austere, balanced and sleek finale. This is an excellent Meursault villages though note that it's one that is going to need at least a few years of keeping as it's pretty tightly wound at present. Drink 2028+.

Neal Martin - VinousClear pale lemon colour. Just three barrels, none new, though the wood does still show on the nose. Fruit floods the palate, ripe but staying in white pears, the barest hint of muscat as well, long and charming. Very attractive, if not quite the tension of some vintages.

Smoky aromas of acacia, mineral reduction and citrus rind give way to detailed, intense and saline-infused medium weight flavors that are at once more complex but also more austere on the balanced and lightly stony finale. Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2019 Meursault Les Vireuils is one of the highlights of the range, offering up aromas of pear, lemon oil, white flowers and vanilla pod, followed by a medium to full-bodied, deep and chalky palate that's lively and precise, concluding with a saline finish. All has been made in foudre, not new. Fresh bouquet with the tangy touch, a little bit of sucrosity on the palate, but has retained classical Aligoté angularity, and very good length. Not one of the sunny fleshy expressions, but more of a classical wine.

The Ott family has been producing wine since 1889 in the region of Wagram in Lower Austria, just to the East of the triangle of Kremstal, Kamptal and Wachau. The estate has around 28 hectares of vineyards located around Feuersbrunn and Engabrunn and Bernhard Ott now runs the domaine since taking over the reigns from his father in 1995. The vineyards are farmed according to biodynamic principles and 90% are planted to Grüner Veltliner with the remaining 10% being Riesling.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a faint tinge of green around the outskirts and a watery hue. Red apple skin and lime aromas are intermeshed with hints of quince, green apple and slatey mineral notes. Ott's 2015 Grüner Veltliner Am Berg tries to balance a crisp freshness and a vinous character. The wine – a collection of younger vines and purchased grapes –opens with an intense but discreet bouquet of white pip and stone fruits along with lemon flavors. Intense, round and aromatic on the palate, this is a pure yet densely textured Veltliner with a lovely spiciness and salinity in the finish. Excellent quality for a so called entry-level wine. Crisp in the finish.

Grapefruit and tangy pineapple near the core lend a Riesling-like cast to this bright bottling, an impression strikingly complemented by hints of resin. As with the corresponding Am Berg, Grüner Veltliner-typical notes—notably celery root and cress—emerge as one works the wine around in the mouth. At the same time, there are mango-like tropical leanings. Lean though slightly oily in feel, this finishes with vibratory if tart and slightly rustically piquant intensity.
