2022 Alheit Vineyards Huilkrans Chenin BlancWestern Cape, SOUTH AFRICA$165. 00Bottle$1980.00 DozenABV: 13%Closure: CorkHuilkrans is a single origin Chenin Blanc from the Skurfberg, drawn from dry-farmed bushvine parcels planted between 1974 and 1989 on Oudam farm—a remote, mountainous site rich in red sand and clay, sitting 450m above sea level. These wide-planted, low-yielding vineyards give rise to a wine of weight and gravitas: if Magnetic North is the tenor voice of Skurfberg, Huilkrans is the baritone—deep-toned, brooding, yet unmistakably of its place.
The grapes were hand sorted and whole bunch pressed. The juice was very lightly settled, with no additions, resulting in a raw, cloudy must. Wild fermentation took place in a combination of old barrels (mostly 400L) and large foudres, lasting about a month. The wine remained on gross lees for twelve months, before resting in tank on fine lees for a further six months prior to bottling.
Other Reviews....
First vintage of this wine since 2019. Chenin Blanc from Skurfberg vineyards planted between 1974 and 1989 on red sand over clay. Lemon, grapefruit, hay and almond on the nose while the palate shows stupendous concentration, fresh acidity and a decidedly bitter finish – great intensity of flavour. A dramatic wine, full of character.

Christian Eedes - Winemag.co.zaThe 2022 Huilkrans, Chenin Blanc from the Citrusdal Mountains, is the first release since 2019. This is very tight on the nose, delineated with touches of sea spray coming through, perhaps less expressive than I would have liked. Hemmed in at the moment, but bottle age will benefit this cuvée. The palate is much more chatty, with a lovely waxy texture and touches of ginger and lemon rind, stretching out nicely towards the finish. Great potential...but be patient. Drink 2027 - 2040.

Neal Martin - Antonio Galloni's VinousPomelo pith and lime blossom on the nose, with wild rice, almonds and apricots too. Waxy, creamy and sleek, with a medium body and a lively, zesty freshness, even from a hot vintage. Vibrant and very, very alive. Drink or hold.

Claire Nesbitt - JamesSuckling.comDisplaying a delightful rusticity in the glass, the 2022 Huilkrans offers notes of dusty lemon peel with ripe citrus blossoms before wafting with petrichor and spiced peach skin aromas. Medium-bodied, the wine opens up on the palate, revealing seductive flavors of spiced white tea with pleasing dusty and savory notes. Just under 4,000 bottles were produced after resting in a mix of foudre and old barrels. Drink 2024-2040.

2021 Alheit Vineyards Hemelrand Vine GardenWestern Cape, SOUTH AFRICA$74. 99Bottle$899.88 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkHemelrand Vine Garden is a white field blend that changes every year depending on the vintage conditions, as the idea behind is to bottle a wine just as the vineyard produces it. The Hemelrand vineyard, situated on the Hemel & Aarde Ridge at 360 meters above sea level on gravelly clay and Sandstone, was planted in 2010 to Chardonnay, Roussanne, Verdelho, Chenin blanc and Muscat Blanc a petit grain. As mentioned, the proportions of the different grapes produced significantly varies each vintage. The 2020 release is composed of 32% Chardonnay, 25% Roussanne, 25% Chenin, 13% Verdelho and 5% Muscat.
The grapes were hand sorted in the vineyard and whole bunch pressed. The resulting juice was very lightly settled with no additions and wild fermented in old barrels of various sizes. After fermentation, the wine was kept on lees for around twelve months, then rested in tank on fine lees without fining for a further six months prior to bottling.
Other Reviews....
The 2021 Hemelrand Vine Garden is one of Chris Alheit's biggest successes and encapsulates everything great about his wine. Initially quite neutral, it reveals wondrous sea spray, honeysuckle, Provençal herbs and hints of powdered chalk on the nose. The palate has exquisite balance, very cohesive and intense, yet the acidity keeps this so fresh with hints of yellow plum, frangipane and quince towards the extended finish. You just want to go back for another sip (and I bet you will). Drink 2024-2042.

Neal Martin - VinousMade with grapes grown around the Hemelrand winery, Vine Garden is an intriguing medley of 36% Chardonnay, 27% Roussanne and a co-fermentation of 37% Chenin Blanc, Verdelho and Muscat. Spicy and perfumed, with peach, tangerine and grapefruit flavours, understated oak and bright cool climate acidity. Drink 2023-2027.

2021 Alheit Vineyards Nautical Dawn Chenin BlancWestern Cape, SOUTH AFRICA$89. 99Bottle$1079.88 DozenABV: 13%Closure: CorkNautical Dawn (the phase between astrological dawn and civilian dawn - dark enough to see the stars for navigation, light enough to hoist a sail) is a single origin Chenin Blanc wine from the False Bay coast of Stellenbosch. Here dry farmed bushvine Chenin Blanc is planted from top to bottom on the hillside of Rustenhof farm in Firgrove (southern Stellenbosch), from where it's possible to see waves breaking only 4kms away. Nautical Dawn is made from a parcel planted in 1978 on the upper part of the slope where the vine rows run with the contour of the hill.
The grapes were hand sorted and whole bunch pressed. The resulting juice was very lightly settled with no additions and wild fermented in two 2000L Foudres. After fermentation, the wine was kept on lees for around twelve months, then rested in tank on fine lees without fining for a further six months prior to bottling.
Other Reviews....
The 2021 Nautical Dawn, from vines grown on granite soils, has a backward bouquet that demands more coaxing than the previous vintage. Eventually it reveals attractive sea spray, petrichor and subtle, pressed white flower scents. The palate is taut and linear on the entry with impressive depth; the 2021 is a little strict at first but reveals discrete lanolin and grilled hazelnut scents with time. Persistent, yet you get the feeling that it's hiding something up its sleeve. Be patient with this one. Drink 2024-2045.

Neal Martin - VinousCalled Nautical Dawn because of the Rustenhof farm's proximity to the waves of False Bay, this subtle yet concentrated old-vine Chenin Blanc has some seashore aromas, flavours of beeswax and nectarine, understated oak, a volatile lift and the focus and precision that are the hallmarks of Chris Alheit's winemaking style. 2021 Alheit Vineyards Monument SemillonWestern Cape, SOUTH AFRICA$150. 00Bottle$1800.00 DozenABV: 13%Closure: CorkMonument Sémillon is a single vineyard wine from an old vineyard in Franschhoek farmed by father and son, Anton and Koos Roux on their family farm, La Colline. Anton's grandfather planted the vineyard in 1936 on an elevated South facing slope overlooking the valley below. The parcel is situated between 310 m and 350 m above sea-level. The soil is mostly granitic with plenty of quartz. In many ways, this parcel is a living monument to a bygone agricultural era and to the history of the Cape wine.
The grapes were hand sorted and whole bunch pressed. The raw juice was settled overnight with no additions, then racked relatively clean compared to their Chenins and wild fermented in old barrels. After fermentation, the wine was kept on primary lees in barrels for 18 months prior to bottling without fining.
Other Reviews....
The 2021 Monument lives up to its name (having previously been labelled "La Colline"). This is a great Semillon, perhaps a step up from the 2020. Yellow plum and honeysuckle intermingle with dried apricot and a very light, cereal-like note on the nose. The palate is well balanced with a slight flor-like note on the entry. It comes with a fine spine of acidity and yellow fruit mixed with stem ginger on the persistent finish. Give this three or four years in bottle. Drink 2022-2040.

Neal Martin - VinousChris Alheit normally uses grapes from two parts of the legendary, south-facing La Colline vineyard for Monument, but in 2021 they all came from the top of the slope. Showing the balance of its old-vine source (planted in 1936 or possibly earlier), this combines leesy weight with notes of fynbos and green herbs, subtle skin tannins and an intense, stony core. These vineyards are the pride and joy of the family, where the pure decomposed granite soils yield wines of clarity and focus.
The grapes were hand sorted and whole bunch pressed. The resulting juice was very lightly settled with no additions and wild fermented in either cements eggs, clay pots, foudres or old barrels of various sizes. After fermentation the wine was kept on lees for around twelve months, then rested in tank on fine lees without fining for a further six months prior to bottling.

The 2021 Fire By Night, formerly known as Broom Ridge, has a lovely, seductive bouquet with mirabelle, jasmine and light candle wax aromas. It needs quite a bit of coaxing but then responds enthusiastically. The palate is very well balanced and cohesive with commendable salinity and a spiciness that lingers off-stage for a while before delivering enticing lemongrass and white pepper notes on the finish. Superb. Drink 2023-2040.

The 2021 Hereafter Here is a level up from the previous vintage. There's a bit more pizzazz on the nose, more vigour with enticing honeysuckle and orange pith scents. This year, Chris Alheit had a delightful little surprise in store for me with a vertical of Cartology from 2022 to 2018. Bursting with energetic acidity, the 2021 Cartology Bush Vines is incredibly food friendly but will need one more year to come around. Anthony Mueller - Wine Advocate (Dec 30, 2023)The 2021 Cartology is a worthy follow-up to the 2020. It unfurls gradually on the nose with honeysuckle and light yellow plum and mirabelle scents, a mineral undertow that stealthily gains prominence. The palate is very well balanced with just a killer line of acidity; Nashi pear and yellow plum commingle towards a resinous finish. The 2020 Cartology is blended with 7% Semillon and is essentially an amalgam of Alheit's vineyards, whole bunch pressed and kept on the lees for 12 months. The 2020 Magnetic North comes from iron-rich soils and vines planted in 1981 and 1984. Very tense but with masses of fruit. Still very youthful but it's rather difficult to resist. Really throbs for ages on the finish. My only complaint? That the Diam stopper they use expanded so rapidly after being extracted that I couldn't get it back in a few minutes after pulling it. The 2017 Cartology comes from old bush vines, saw no SO2 addition during ferment and, after a rough settling, was matured in used barrels. The acidity is extremely well judged (as it nearly always is) and a touch of stem ginger and rhubarb emerges toward the poised, energetic finish. Excellent.

Neal Martin - VinousAlheit’s favourite vintage so far. Some new (old) vineyards in this vintage in addition to the usual nine: one from Stellenbosch, one from Tygerberg, one from the Paardeberg and one from Piekenierskloof. He is starting to see patterns among the parcels and to have favourites. This is based on that knowledge. False Bay Chenin much better than he thought before.
Zesty orange and citrus nose. Tight and tangy with real tension as well as that amazing depth and richness on the mid palate without any heaviness. Long and tangy with a slightly grainy texture that adds freshness and length. A lovely almost imperceptible chew on the finish.

The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Pucelles opens in the glass with aromas of citrus oil, crisp stone fruit and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, ample and saline, it's a touch more textural and enveloping than the Caillerets, though it remains one of the finer-boned, leaner cuvées in the range. Drink 2021 - 2038.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Les Pucelles 1er Cru comes from the Pernot family’s holding. Complex on the nose, this offers plenty of mineral/petrichor scents entwined with the citrus fruit that turns more malic with aeration. The palate is very well balanced. Real weight and concentration here, this is a dense and captivating Les Pucelles that frankly nudges Grand Cru in quality. Outstanding. Drink 2024 - 2042.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Clos des Folatières 1er Cru comes from heavier soils that ensures the vines do not suffer hydric stress, the vines here planted around 30 years ago. This has a more airy nose, well defined with apple blossom, touches of honeysuckle and citrus peel. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, hints of almond and orange rind, fine depth and focus with hints of apricot on the finish. This should age extremely well in bottle. Drink 2024 - 2042.

Neal Martin - VinousThe vineyard was exchanged in a previous generation between the Chartron and Pernot families. Pale primrose. The bouquet is really stylish, a more chiselled type of Folatières, less peachy than the family domaine. Perhaps some of that is coming out now. This is spectacular with almost grand cru intensity while staying light on its feet. Very persistent and with waves of different flavours coming. 6 barrels made, try to get some!

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Les Chalumaux 1er Cru comes from the oldest vines on the estate, planted in 1954. Now this has real complexity on the nose with intense malic fruit, fine mineralité and light sea spray nuances. The palate is well balanced with fine poise. This is a very elegant, suave Puligny that gentle unfolds on the finish, hints of blackcurrant leaf and nettle on the aftertaste. Excellent. Drink 2024 - 2040.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)Comprising of nine barrels, the 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Clos des Noyers Bret comes from Pernot’s own vineyard. Previously released under the Domaine Boisson-Vadot label, wines from their holdings are now made and presented under the labels of Bernard Boisson's children; his son Pierre Boisson and daughter Anne Boisson. While the two children vinify separately, they share the same cellar in Meursault, and produce wines that are more similar than they are different. Vine age is impressive, with many plots over 60 years old, and no herbicides or fertilisers used. Wines are fermented wild in barrel, thereafter raised in oak for 19-22 months, with no more than 30% new oak used predominantly for the top cuvées.
Winemaking for Anne's Meursault sees a cold settling for 12 hours before fermentation in barrique, of which 20% is new oak. Lees are stirred four or five times at the end of alcoholic fermentation in early spring, and then given 22 months élevage.

Jean-François came back to run the family estate in 1998 after ten years working Burgundy and he combines his passion for the Jura terroir – here ideal for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir - with a staunch defence of Burgundian techniques; low yields and most recently biodynamic methods for which he has now gained Demeter certification.
In addition to the ‘Estate’ wines there are, since 2013, a group of wines made from grapes purchased from around the region and in others, all are grown by their vigneron friends to their standards, so organic or bio-dynamically farmed and tended. They pay very high prices to get the quality they want. Each of these necogiant wine are made on the property by Jean-François and his small team; from grapes into wine, and have the same Ganevat precision, levity and exquisite texture despite the differing origins of the grapes.
Montferrand Chardonnay comes from old vines planted on a terroir of Lias-period marls, harvested by hand. Vinification is done naturally with a very short maceration, transferred into oak barrels for fermentation and a maturation of five years. As always there are no additions.
