Monument Sémillon is a single vineyard wine from an old vineyard in Franschhoek farmed by father and son, Anton and Koos Roux on their family farm, La Colline. Anton's grandfather planted the vineyard in 1936 on an elevated South facing slope overlooking the valley below. The parcel is situated between 310 m and 350 m above sea-level. The soil is mostly granitic with plenty of quartz. In many ways, this parcel is a living monument to a bygone agricultural era and to the history of the Cape wine.
The grapes were hand sorted and whole bunch pressed. The raw juice was settled overnight with no additions, then racked relatively clean compared to their Chenins and wild fermented in old barrels. After fermentation, the wine was kept on primary lees in barrels for 18 months prior to bottling without fining.

Other Reviews....
The 2020 Monument is a massal selection of Semillon located between 310m and 350m on mostly granitic soil. It undergoes a wild ferment and kept on the primary lees for 18 months in 8-year-old barriques. It has a compelling leesy bouquet with seaspray scents, a very subtle flor-like scent. The palate is well balanced with apricot, peach and kiwi fruit, harmonious and long, maybe not quite as complex on the finish as some of Alheit's other cuvées this year. But still this is very fine. Drink: 2022-2032.

Neal Martin - Vinous

This creamy white delivers delicate spice and graphite notes, which lace flavors of macerated raspberry and peach fruit. Shows soft orange peel acidity that works with a pronounced tang of salty mineral to provide balancing cut and drive. The finish reveals hints of chamomile and lemon wax. Drink now. 112 cases made.
