    2019 COS Zibibbo in Pithos
    Sicily, ITALY
    $64. 99
    Bottle
    $779.88 Dozen
    ABV: 12%
    Closure: Cork

Azienda Agricola COS was founded in 1980 in the town of Vittoria, located in the southeast of Sicily. Championing indigenous grape varietals since their inception, today they are one of the finest producers on the island.

Zibibbo is the local name for Muscat of Alexandria, also known as Moscato d'Alessandria in other parts of Italy. The fruit is grown 12 meters above sea level in Marsala, the Western part of Sicily. Zibibbo in Pithos is a skin fermented white wine, which is aged for an extended period in traditional terracotta amphora vessels. Despite this extended period of skin maceration, the wine remains fresh and vibrant, and does not have the orange hue of other skin fermented white wines. The skin maceration in amphora has provided the wine with a greater sense of complexity and a wonderful textural feeling on the palate.

    Other Reviews....
The 2019 Zibibbo in Pithos is exotic and wickedly fresh, as musky dried apricot and tangerine gives way to minty herbs and hints of wet concrete. It’s deeply textural, almost glycerol-like in feel, with masses of inner florals resonating over notes of ripe melon and hints of kiwi, all kept in check by brisk acidity. This is so incredibly fresh and lifted but also lightly structured, tapering off like taking that first bite of a perfectly ripe yellow apple. What a fun wine. The Zibibbo in Pithos is a dry Muscat of Alexandria (known on Etna as Zibibbo) that’s vinified in amphora. Drink 2022 - 2025.

As is usually the case chez Colin, this is the most elegant wine among these 1ers with its cool, pure and airy nose of lemon peel, mineral reduction, apple, pear and soft floral nuances. There is very good concentration to the seductively textured but precise medium-bodied flavors that flash plenty of minerality on the saline and strikingly persistent finish. Note well however that this chiseled effort is very firm and is a wine that is going to require extended patience.

(Colin's vines are located just across the road from his Charmes and a bit closer to the village of Meursault): Bright, pale yellow-green. Wonderfully delicate aromas of underripe pineapple, white peach, flowers, spices and crushed rock. Denser than Colin's other Meursault premier crus but its uncanny thickness is fully buffered by dusty, palate-staining minerality. This very pure wine shows the penetrating energy of a tungsten filament. Consistent from start to endless finish. There's still an impression of sweetness here as the wine has two grams per liter of residual sugar, but Colin suspects that one of his three 350-liter barrels has not yet completely finished its sugar fermentation.

    2020 Schiopetto Collio Friulano
    Friuli, ITALY
    $64. 99
    Bottle
    $779.88 Dozen
    Cellar: Drink now - 4 Years (2023-2027)
    ABV: 13%

Mario Schiopetto was the man considered responsible for bringing fame to Friuli’s white wines. He pioneered wine preservation techniques in the wine making process, something lacking in the region in the 1970’s - cold and anti-oxidative handling, epitomised by the German handling of Riesling - along with the more 'French' technique of elevating their wines in a careful, more oxidative, texture-building manner.
Schiopetto’s standout variety is Friulano which sees 7-8 months on lees resulting in a wine that’s rich in texture and flavour with an abundance of wild floral and almond notes on the nose, supported on the palate with rich stone fruits and refreshing acidity.
Brilliant very pale straw colour with green shaded edges and a watery hue. Aromas of pear, lime and green apple gently infused with aromatic herbs are trailed by some stony mineral notes. Elegant and racy, pear and green apple fruits meld into lime, fresh herbs and slatey mineral characters on the back half. Riverstone like mouth feel finishing dry with zippy acidity and a long snappy flinty mineral laced aftertaste.
Drink over the next 3-4 years.

(Jobard picked a full crop of grapes at the beginning of the harvest): Sexy scents of lemon drop and wild herbs. Tactile, juicy and spicy in the mouth, showing excellent lift and mineral energy to the flavors of citrus fruits, ginger and minerals. This wine is not lower in acidity after its malolactic fermentation than the 2015 was, noted Jobard. Finishes lively and long, with an intriguing saline nuance. A lovely vin de terroir in the making.

The 2019 Idig GG is pure and chalky on the deep, intense, fully ripe yet elegant, refined and lemonscented nose with its ripe mirabelle aromas. Silky and juicy on the first palate, this is an elegant, very complex, tight and mineral Idig with structure, finesse and well-dosed power. The finish is pure and salty, beautifully citric and very long, with promising grip and tension.

The delicious paradox of this great dry riesling is the way it is built on an imposing scale, but is very pure and super straight without any hint of heaviness, even on the very long powerful finish. You'll need to be patient for at least a couple of years if you want to experience all the subtle nuances, but the ripe mirabelle note is already delightful. At least thirty years of ageing potential.

For once orchard fruit getsthe upper hand on meadow herbs in a Christmann Grosses Gewächs, but not in a heavy-handed but rather delightfully animating way. Fine mineral and herbal notions add interest and the merest hint of residual sugar serves only to increase the Idig’s power of seduction. I liked the 2014 for its subtlety, but think the 2016 deserves an extra half point for elegance.

Noble oaky flavors intertwined with a perfume of ripe stone fruits, lemons, herbs and crushed stones open to the very deep, complex and concentrated 2015 Königsbacher Idig Riesling Trocken GG. This full-bodied, powerful, round and juicy, yet vital and finesse-full Riesling reveals a dense and silky texture. The wine is structured with fine tannins and a highly elegant, mouthwatering and mineral acidity. The oak is still detectable in the beginning, but gets very well integrated with (some hours of) aeration. The finish is pure and salty, as well as powerful, sappy and aromatic. The 2015 Idig is very fine, but also compact and powerful. This will need some years to unfold its great character.

A hint of smoke from long yeast contact, but also complex earthy notes mark this out as one of the most serious dry rieslings of the vintage in the Pfalz. In spite of the understated style, this is already a delicious wine in which the power is all hidden beneath the calm surface; it only makes itself felt directly on the impressively long and complete finish.

The 2015 Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Riesling Auslese is the botrytis selection of the terraced Laychen plot that mainly sources the dry Riesling cru. From ungrafted 70-year-old vines, this Auslese opens stunningly clear, fresh and stony on the nose, with flinty flavors and remarkably fine and precise fruit aromas. This is a very well defined, finessed and mineral Auslese with some Saar features, although it is more lush and tender, of course. The finish is pure and stony, very fine and piquant, with lots of salt and stimulating finesse. A great and gorgeous Mosel Auslese!

The 2015 Dhroner Hofberg Riesling Spätlese comes from the warmer part of the cru and from 60+ year old vines that were picked botrytis-free in the end of October. The wine offers a super precise, fresh and intense bouquet of perfectly ripe Riesling berries intermixed with cool, crystalline-clear slate and flint aromas that give an exciting counterpoint. On the palate, this is a highly piquant and elegant, very finessed and lush Spätlese. It has a gorgeously elegant, balanced and stimulatingly salty finish. This is a picture-book Spätlese from the 2015 vintage and comes highly recommended.

Crafted from old bush vines planted in the 1950’s and 1960’s which are grown without irrigation on various types of granite soil. The vineyards are planted on varying facing slopes bringing tremendous variety to the fruit. Fruit from other selected sites within the appellation are also purchased to complete the final blends.

Comprised of Chenin Blanc, Roussanne, Marsanne, Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Verdehlo, Grenache Gris, Clairette Blanche, Semillon and Palomino. Whole bunch pressed directly to old casks (1200L foudres and one 3000L foudre) for fermentation and ageing of 15 months. After this the wines are racked and blended in a single concrete tank and left for another 6 to 8 months before bottling. Inspired by the history of the old, long forgotten Cape Blends that were around before the advent of modern winemaking.

Eccentric floral characters, curious spices, lemon balm, ginger. Scents and flavours in synch, supple and rich to taste with a glazed, glassy texture that then finishes tart and powdery. Composed of 52% Sauvignon Blanc, 14% Sauvignon Gris and 34% Sémillon, the 2020 Aile d'Argent has no Muscadelle this year, no skin contact and no malolactic. It sails out of the glass with fabulously flamboyant notes of fresh pineapple, nectarines and jasmine, plus suggestions of key lime pie, passion fruit and orange zest. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers opulent tropical and citrus fruit layers, supported by plenty of freshness and a decadent touch of oiliness to the texture, finishing long and impactful. So hard to resist even at this nascent stage, I can't wait to see how this is going to age!

The 2020 Aile d'Argent is terrific. Aromatic and vibrant, it possesses terrific energy and a bit more verve than in the past. The blocked malo style works especially well in this vintage. The Sauvignon Blanc is quite expressive, especially in the wine's aromatic profile.

The first year made entirely under the direction of Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy. I was expecting this to be the wine in the Mouton stable with the most evident transition from Philippe Dhalluin, and certainly you see a little less exuberance, a little more sculpting rather than width, with sea breeze and citrus aromatics. Plenty of bright pineapple and apricot flavours, with nuance and balance, and the salty cracker finish that you always want from this wine. Will be bottled in June 2021. Harvest began on August 24 (same as 2011, joint earliest on record) through to 28. No more malolactic during winemaking as you saw (usually just 5-10%) under Dhalluin, and no skin contact, but the rich mouthfeel is instead found through a higher proportion of Sauvignon Gris, and no longer co-fermented with the Sauvignon Blanc.

Nautical Dawn (the phase between astrological dawn and civilian dawn - dark enough to see the stars for navigation, light enough to hoist a sail) is a single origin Chenin Blanc wine from the False Bay coast of Stellenbosch. Here dry farmed bushvine Chenin Blanc is planted from top to bottom on the hillside of Rustenhof farm in Firgrove (southern Stellenbosch), from where it's possible to see waves breaking only 4kms away. Nautical Dawn is made from a parcel planted in 1978 on the upper part of the slope where the vine rows run with the contour of the hill.
The grapes were hand sorted and whole bunch pressed. The resulting juice was very lightly settled with no additions and wild fermented in two 2000L Foudres. After fermentation, the wine was kept on lees for around twelve months, then rested in tank on fine lees without fining for a further six months prior to bottling.

    Other Reviews....
The 2020 Nautical Dawn, from granite soils and vines planted in 1978 that undergoes a two month ferment, is aged in two foudres for 12 months. Fragrant on the nose, this offers beguiling yellow plum, honeysuckle and peach skin scents. Very pure. The palate is well balanced with an assertive, spicy entry, wonderful depth and vibrancy with a layered pithy finish that lingers. Brilliant. Drink: 2023-2042.

2020 Alheit Vineyards Magnetic North Chenin Blanc

    $1920.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13.4%

Magnetic North is a single origin Chenin Blanc from the Citrusdal Mountain ward, one of the northernmost wine regions in South Africa. The vineyard lies a few degrees off true north from the Alheit cellar, roughly on magnetic North. It is made from two parcels of dry farmed ungrafted bushvine Chenin growing on at 520m above sea level on red iron-rich sand over gravel and red clay.
The grapes were hand sorted and whole bunch pressed. The resulting juice was very lightly settled with no additions and wild fermented in a four year old 2000L Foudre. After fermentation, the wine was kept on lees for around twelve months, then rested in tank on fine lees without fining for a further six months prior to bottling.

    Other Reviews....
The 2020 Magnetic North comes from iron-rich soils and vines planted in 1981 and 1984. It has a distinctive nose with rooibos and fynbos scents, earthy perhaps and well-defined; you'll either love it or hate it (mine is the former). The palate is well balanced with a very tangy entry: marmalade, kumquat and grapefruit, so bitter that it might put some people off. But Alheit describes it as a "weirdo" and the best wine he's made. Impressive, though not his best wine in this vintage (then again, the bar is set high at this address). Drink: 2023-2036.

    $1800.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13.1%
    Closure: Cork

Monument Sémillon is a single vineyard wine from an old vineyard in Franschhoek farmed by father and son, Anton and Koos Roux on their family farm, La Colline. Anton's grandfather planted the vineyard in 1936 on an elevated South facing slope overlooking the valley below. The parcel is situated between 310 m and 350 m above sea-level. The soil is mostly granitic with plenty of quartz. In many ways, this parcel is a living monument to a bygone agricultural era and to the history of the Cape wine.
The grapes were hand sorted and whole bunch pressed. The raw juice was settled overnight with no additions, then racked relatively clean compared to their Chenins and wild fermented in old barrels. After fermentation, the wine was kept on primary lees in barrels for 18 months prior to bottling without fining.

    Other Reviews....
The 2020 Monument is a massal selection of Semillon located between 310m and 350m on mostly granitic soil. It undergoes a wild ferment and kept on the primary lees for 18 months in 8-year-old barriques. It has a compelling leesy bouquet with seaspray scents, a very subtle flor-like scent. The palate is well balanced with apricot, peach and kiwi fruit, harmonious and long, maybe not quite as complex on the finish as some of Alheit's other cuvées this year. But still this is very fine. Drink: 2022-2032.

The 2019 Cartology was whole-bunch-pressed and matured in cement eggs, amphorae, foudres and used barrels, fermented for between three weeks and 11 months, and kept on the lees for 12 months. It has a sublime and utterly captivating bouquet of honeysuckle, white peach and flecks of white chocolate and orange peel, all beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with a crisp entry, offering vivid scents of citrus peel, lime, orange zest and stem ginger toward a finish that fans out with brio. Another outstanding Cartology from Chris Alheit. Drink 2022 - 2032.

Such intensity! Salty beeswax on the nose and some green notes (Sémillon?) streak the liquid honey (though it's a bone-dry wine) and real grip on the inside of the palate. Very tense but with masses of fruit. Still very youthful but it's rather difficult to resist. Really throbs for ages on the finish. My only complaint? That the Diam stopper they use expanded so rapidly after being extracted that I couldn't get it back in a few minutes after pulling it. I should imagine that this wine will last for weeks in an opened bottle. Drink 2022 - 2028.

The 2017 Cartology comes from old bush vines, saw no SO2 addition during ferment and, after a rough settling, was matured in used barrels. It has a very attractive bouquet of dried honey, orange blossom and beeswax, very well defined and gaining intensity all the time in the glass. The palate is beautifully balanced with a gorgeous tangy, marmalade-tinged opening. The acidity is extremely well judged (as it nearly always is) and a touch of stem ginger and rhubarb emerges toward the poised, energetic finish. Excellent.

Alheit’s favourite vintage so far. Some new (old) vineyards in this vintage in addition to the usual nine: one from Stellenbosch, one from Tygerberg, one from the Paardeberg and one from Piekenierskloof. He is starting to see patterns among the parcels and to have favourites. This is based on that knowledge. False Bay Chenin much better than he thought before.
Zesty orange and citrus nose. Tight and tangy with real tension as well as that amazing depth and richness on the mid palate without any heaviness. Long and tangy with a slightly grainy texture that adds freshness and length. A lovely almost imperceptible chew on the finish.

La Combe; a tiny hamlet above the village of Rotalier is home to the larger-than-life “Fan Fan” Jean-François Ganevat. Jean-François came back to run the family estate in 1998 after ten years working Burgundy and he combines his passion for the Jura terroir – here ideal for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir - with a staunch defence of Burgundian techniques; low yields and most recently biodynamic methods for which he has now gained Demeter certification.

In addition to the ‘Estate’ wines there are, since 2013, a group of wines made from grapes purchased from around the region and in others, all are grown by their vigneron friends to their standards, so organic or bio-dynamically farmed and tended. They pay very high prices to get the quality they want. Each of these necogiant wine are made on the property by Jean-François and his small team; from grapes into wine, and have the same Ganevat precision, levity and exquisite texture despite the differing origins of the grapes.

Les Arces is 100% Jura Chardonnay planted on a marl-limestone terroir, fermented and aged in wooden tank for two years. As always natural yeasts only are used, with no filtration and no additions.

From a 2 ha south facing site planted half 1965 and half 1990 on sandy soil over clay with a limestone base. Vinified with indigenous yeast 50% in aged foudres and 50% in barrel (35% new) and aged for 2 years on fine lees. Here the wine shows virtually no impact from the extended oak ageing or the new oak, such is the strength of the fruit it shows excellent integration and comfortably rides above the elevage. This shows notable acid freshness giving great length and shape on the palate. Very long with terrific complexity and ageing potential.

From vines averaging 70 year old on about 30cm of clay over limestone. Vinified with indigenous yeast after separating free run and press juices and aged on fine lees for 12 months in a combination of older foudres and barrels. The wine is then returned to tank for another 8 months of ageing on fine lees. This is deep and complex with a touch of noble reduction giving more than a nod to Burgundy in terms of texture and structure.

Stéphane Tissot is a tireless and vigorous promoter of individual sites and natural wines. He brings technological experience from his work in Australia and South Africa, and combines this with his ruthless yield reduction philosophy and very serious 'small batch' winemaking which is carried out as naturally as possible. Tissot plants mostly on clay and limestone, all sites are farmed biodynamically and yields are kept low, averaging only 30 h/l per hectare. Ferments are allowed to commence naturally and the still wines are bottled without filtration and little or no SO2 is added across the board. Vibrancy and fruit presence is a signature across all his wines. Given Stéphane is constantly experimenting and obsessively seeking improvements; he is at the forefront of the Jura revolution and produces terroir-driven wines of depth, intensity, interest and undeniable quality.

The low-yielding biodynamic Savagnin grapes for these Vin Jaunes are hand-picked and the juice fermented in steel tanks. The mostly clay soils give wines of higher acidity (whereas limestone gives less acidity and more minerality), and strong backbone. After the primary fermentation the wine is part-filled (around 85%) into old barrels (228 lt. usually) and a 'flor' yeast veil or 'voile' develops on the surface of the wine, protecting it from oxidation and adding complex aromas and flavours to the wine. The barrels are stored in a cool but 'airy' cellar (not underground) for around 6-7 years so the dryer atmosphere causes the evaporation of water and therefore concentration of flavours and reduction of the wine volume. In fact, usually only 620ml. (the size of a Vin Jaune bottle) remains from a litre. This is very expensive wine to make, as not only is there a huge volume loss, but often some barrels need to be culled.

La Mailloche has a gentle east aspect and very degraded soils of Liassic clay. Another wine with good firmness and seductive weight with some nice bitterness.

The Clos de la Tour de Curon comes from the Bajocien limestone soils that surround the tower in Arbois and the various plots are incredibly close planted, up to 27,000 vines a hectare in places. Like the rest of the single-vineyard Chardonnays, this wine is matured in barrel for two years before it was bottled.

    Other Reviews....
The 2018 harvest in Jura has been described as ‘quite warm’ to ‘very warm’ though best producers have managed well and frankly, no hail and frost is pretty refreshing. Tour du Curon is arguably the best site in all of Jura for white grapes, indeed, one of the best chardonnay sites on earth.
A bold wine, distinct, powerful, strongly saline, very savoury, direct, satiny, exceptionally long and profound in its layer and layers and layers of flavour. Perfume is no slouch, all salted cashew, ripe stone fruits, apple, ginger biscuits and floral things, so lovely to sniff on and evocative of the region. There will be a conversation about alcohol (15.5%) but the wine holds it all in neatly, though you’ve got no wallflower here. So much verity to the season too. Phenomenal depth, incredibly impressive wine, moreish, compelling, complex, so packed with detail. A truly symphonic wine. Drink 2021 - 2030.

Rose Massale is made with a rare mutated pink fruit-producing Chardonnay from cuttings propagated from 40 plants. It is sourced from different vineyards, 60% clay and 40% limestone, and it's a little bit more aromatic than normal Chardonnay. Stéphane Tissot is very excited and pleased with initial harvests of these grapes that are treated the same way as white chardonnay.

Chardonnay from old vines in Chateau Chalon. Sursis means 'suspended sentence', because the vineyard would need to be replanted with Savagnin in order to have the right to carry its appellation. Grown on marl with chalky stones, it is pure, firm and dry.

Les Graviers hails from five vineyards with vine age averaging over 60 years. Each plot contains a high proportion of limestone dominant soils which gives the wines from here a fine line of mineral tension and freshness.

    Other Reviews....
Les Graviers is usually a cru that I put down the pecking order of Tissot’s wines, but in 2018, a year of chubbier, more potent chardonnay, it seemed to do the opposite and find that electricity and crackle I love from Tissot and Jura. It’s heady in scents of ripe apple, sea spray, flint, sandalwood and almonds. The palate is similar, opulent to a point but finds chalky pucker in texture and an amazing spine of saline acidity at its core. It has energy, vitality, drive and a general sense of deliciousness. A brilliant, wonderful and vibrant chardonnay. Pedigree plus. Drink 2021 - 2035.

Big, bold year for wines, lots of heat, lots of volume, lots of everything. Bruyeres one of the great, great sites of Jura and a visionary decision to plant from Stephane Tissot. This and vin jaune from the vineyard are epic.
It’s fragrant and full bodied but still manages to push an agenda of freshness and Jura ‘saline minerality’ through and through. Scents of sugar biscuit, ginger biscuit, green apple, preserved lemon, flavours pretty similar and a full salted biscuit finish. Lush texture, satiny though, succulent, puckers the palate with its saltiness and there’s layers of flavour, mineraly things, harmonious ripe fruit and brisk acidity. It’s such a complex, compelling, delicious wine. Kowtow at the throne. Drink 2021 - 2035.

This wine has spent around three years under flor; a sous voile wine. Stephane Tissot an outstanding spokesperson for Jura wines in general. This is the kind of wine that sets you on a righteous path. It’s an outstanding release.
So good. Addictive stuff. Powerful brown lime, sea spray and green apple scents, and importantly, just a hint of mustard powder. Linear in the palate, fine boned and juicy but with filigree of detail, incredible mineral vein, that sense of nuttiness, saline acidity and supreme length. Complexity, intensity, glory. This is so bloody good, and top of tree as an example of the sous voile style. A clear statement of how savagnin is grape royalty.

Benito Ferrara’s most famous wine, Vigna Cicogna Greco di Tufo, is described by wine critic Ian d’Agata as an ‘Italian icon’. Brilliant pale straw colour with tinges of green around the edges and a watery hue. The nose dispels aromas of fresh pear, lime and green apple subtlety infused with fresh herbs over a stony back drop. Light and crisp yet possessing a nicely rounded mouthfeel, flavours of fresh pears and limes subtlety infused with fresh herbs are carried by a citrusy wet stone and mineral back drop. Finishes dry with snappy acidity and a long intensely flavoured aftertaste.
    Cellar 5-6 years.

Brilliant pale straw colour with a hint of green to the edges and a watery hue. Herbaceous grassy scents combine with lime and fresh herb infusions over some asparagus and subtle wet stone notes. Light and very dry the palate has flavours of herbaceous grassy characters and lime which sit over a back drop of dried herbs, wet stone and asparagus. Finishes very dry with fresh acidity and an aftertaste of herbaceous grassy characters, lime, dried herbs, wet stone and lightly spiced asparagus.

Brilliant pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Lifted aromas of ripe pear laced with dried honey overlay some lime, wet stone and subtle spicy cashew notes. Quite rich with a fullish mouthfeel the palate possesses flavours of ripe pears and dried honey over subtle stony characters and a pinch of spice. Clean dry finish with good fresh acidity and an aftertaste of pears, dried honey, stony elements and light spice.
