This is the second vintage of Chalmers exotic and racy Falanghina, the first commercial release of this varietal in Australia. In Italy Falanghina refers to two distinct grape varieties, both primarily grown in Campania region. Falanghina Flegrea is a highly aromatic and fruity grape grown closer to the coast, and Falanghina Beneventana, a more savoury and mineral version grown further into the mountains behind Naples. This wine is made from the Chalmers imported clone of Falanghina Beneventana and spent 6 months on lees.
Bright pale straw colour with a glimmer of green to the edges and a watery hue. Aromas of ripe pear, green apple and lime are followed by some fresh herb and stony mineral notes. Delicious pear, lime and green apple fruits flood the mouth with terrific intensity. Subtle infusions of fresh herbs and a distinct flinty mineral character linger on the back half. Finishes dry with a burst of zingy acidity and a long racy aftertaste.

Ample body and mouthfeel. Lots of florals too, almost into candied territory, plenty of citrus too. So aromatic. So lively. And yet a fair amount of presence too, helped a little by alcohol weight. Interesting. Smoky aftertaste, as a positive. Drink 2021 - 2023.

Showing great precision the palate is bursting with intense lime and lemon flavours which are underpinned by searing acidity. One of Australia’s finest rieslings; a benchmark riesling for me.
Loads of floral perfume, preserved lemon, pretty talc scents, a bit of warm river pebble, lime juice. Delicate in the palate, more lime juice here, tart and with great energy, crispness, cool herbal notes, some chalky pucker and endless mouth-watering length. Tightly wound but slightly juicy, if you get the drift. Beautiful expression, high toned saline mineral acidity, refreshing now to the max, will last a generation. Drink 2021-2040+

A seriously good, young dry riesling with a striking mineral edge to the nose of fresh lime juice, wet stones and gentle herbal notes. The palate has real intensity and depth with a vivid citrus and white-peach fruit drive. Snaps dry and the flavors hold pure and long. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

As pure as a spring day and smelling of a citrus orchard in bloom. A heady mix of lime and lemon sprinkled with ginger powder are just teasers, as this is complex and beguiling. The palate is long and defined by acidity as much as the power of the fruit. It has texture, succulence and a slickness rendering it assured and impressive. Drink by 2035.

A good vintage for Clos Clare in 2021.
Pretty and pure. I’m thinking white flowers, lime and white peach. It’s fresh, a fine powdery texture, pure cool acidity, very long and even, with a lemon barley and lime aftertaste. Nice.

Delicate, as usual, with a flood of green apple, white flowers, Turkish apricots, cheesecloth and beeswax. This has Australian bush, and wide open summer air, and saltbush, too. The phenolics have a bitter little kick in them through the finish ... but that's ok, I was waiting for it. The waxy, lanolin character is exactly en pointe for the variety. Drink by 2030.

Very Intense Release. So much perfume, so much velocity and fruit power to taste. Citrus oil, apple juice concentrate, faintest honeyed character, a sluice of saline minerality. A combination of crushed and whole-bunch fruit, neutral yeast, fermentation in stainless steel, 3 months on lees prior to racking and blending. Not fined. So youthful, so fresh in a squeezed juice kind of way. Lemon jelly crystals, lemon drop, grapefruit pith, orange peel, lime blossom, in scent and on the palate. Nice texture in building phase. But, as usual, the co-star with equal billing in this production is the crunchy, tangy acidity. Drink by 2031.

Established in 1987, Dalrymple is situated in the heart of the highly acclaimed Pipers River region. Their Cave Block vineyard is a well sheltered site that has a slightly warmer microclimate producing low yields and intensely concentrated fruit, ideal for the production of refined cool climate Chardonnay. Winemaking techniques for the 2019 Cave Block Chardonnay included a parcel of wild fermentation, light lees contact and partial malolactic fermentation to naturally adjust acidity for balance and structure. Maturation took place in a mix of new and old French oak barriques and puncheons for a period of 11 months.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a distinct glimmer of green skirting the edges and a watery hue. The nose opens with an intense and complex aromatic profile of peach, subtle apricot, lightly honeyed biscuit, cashew, citrusy nougat and spice. Finishes clean and fresh with a gentle creaminess to the mouthfeel and a very long, elegant conclusion.

This is a truly exceptional wine. Lacy acidity curtails the variety's inherent tendency toward excess. The usual cavalcade of exotica is present: tropical fruits, orange blossom and honeysuckle. From the most outstanding single block of the vintage, planted 1996. Made by Phil Lehmann. A contrasting mood to Eden Hall's Springton, the intensity and tension of the season is encapsulated here. Spicy, wild lemon, lime and Granny Smith apple fill an expansive and generous style, holding a finish of considerable drive, persistence and promise. It holds both the richness and breadth for immediate appeal and the cool, focused acid energy to go long. Drink by 2030.

Matured in French oak casks with bâtonnage. Tasmania showcases riesling's wonderfully exotic side and its high-tensile endurance, but rarely are these united as effortlessly as this. Low yields made for impressive concentration of star fruit, wild lemon and golden kiwifruit. Honed by gloriously crystalline acidity, it glides with consummate control, precision and endurance. One of the greats, it will live forever. Drink by 2040.

A blend of Sexton, Tarraford, Applejack, Primavera and Wombat Creek vineyards. 15% new oak (puncheons). About 10% malo. In other news, Mel Chester (ex Seppelt, Sutton Grange) is the incoming winemaker at Giant Steps, while Steve Flamsteed involves himself in special ops for GS, among other things.

Flavour, crunch, gloss, and all up a Chardonnay of fine balance and appeal. White peach, almond, a little fennel and lime, fine acidity, flinty texture, a cool cucumber thing happening, and clean, with a well-defined finish of excellent length. Very good in 2021. Drink 2022-2027.
