Elements of Islay Sherry Cask Cask Strength Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Islay, SCOTLAND$150. 00Bottle$1800.00 DozenABV: 54.5%We're used to seeing the Elements series in 500ml formats. This bottling upgrades drinkers to 700ml. It's part of a new core trilogy of blended malts introduced in 2022 (the others are 'Cask Edit' and 'Bourbon Cask'). Matured in first-fill and refill sherry butts and hogsheads and combining whiskies from the north and south of Islay before bottling at a hearty strength, components are kept secret, but just looking at the bottle tells you everything you need; there are the expected aromas of sweet peat reek, joined by raisin cake, prunes, dried orange peel and baking spice, followed by a massive flavour drive that adds lanolin, walnut brownies, maritime salinity and chimney soot. Chilli-infused dark chocolate, smokey dates and trace iodine finish off this impressive blending effort that also comes non chill-filtered. 54.5% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Nose: obviously more sherried, with a rather dry profile on tobacco leaves, dark chocolate and Lapsang tea. Cigar boxes and hints of black peppercorns. Quite aromatic. Mouth: again more on the dark and dry side of the spectrum. Plenty of leafy notes, liqourice, dark chocolate and dried orange peels. A lot of sweet pepper, hints of seashells and a gingery edge. Rather sooty. Finish: really long, with dry smoke, dark chocolate, tobacco and a hint of muscovado sugar. - whiskynotes.be
Notes from the bottlers... Nose: The lingering scent of tobacco remains in an empty sandalwood cigar box. Arbroath smokie sits alongside aromatic notes of lemon oil, ginger root and a hint of menthol. Palate: Rich and unctuous. Dark-chocolate-dipped candied orange slices and chunks of crystalised stem ginger. Muscovado sugar syrup provides a sticky, dark drizzle over date-studded ginger cake. Sweet smoke and dried autumn fruits sit in the background. Finish: Treacle toffee and smoky black tea, sweetened by dark brown sugar. A long, sweet, rich and spicy finish.

The mouth is fruity, well-balanced and offers a fine juicy / acidulous frame, a good definition, elegance, gourmandize, freshness, a good definition as well as a beautiful grain. Alc. 12.5% - Ardbeg Traigh Bhan 19 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - Batch 4Islay, SCOTLAND$499. 00Bottle$5988.00 DozenABV: 46.2%
Released in early 2022 but only recently landed in Australia, the highly allocated Traigh Bhan Batch TB/04-07.03.2003/22.CG continues a running theme, with a lengthy maturation in a combination of American oak and oloroso sherry casks - although the proportion of the latter is slightly increased in this edition. Bottled in much smaller quantities than the rest of the core range "under a full moon", as noted on the front label, it arrives non chill filtered at 46.2% Alc./Vol.
Traigh Bhan is now firmly in collector-land. Consequently, few tasting notes are available. If you're looking to add to your collection or just want to find out what well-aged Ardbeg tastes like, don't hesitate on this offer. For those new to the label, the name is a reference to the local Traigh Bhan beach on Islay, which is known as the 'Singing Sands'. Each batch is intended to be slightly different from the last due to minor changes in cask selection. Expect rich wood smoke and menthol alongside bolder flavours of cayenne pepper and aniseed.
Notes from the producers... NOSE: On the nose, rising aromas of herbal pine and fennel flow into sharp notes of citrusy lime sorbet and medicinal lozenge, while eucalyptus and saddle soap follow on the breeze. A splash of water releases a cascade of hazelnut, sweet vanilla, and currants, before rich minted chocolate brings the nose to a close. TASTE: An intense wave of wood smoke crashes over the palate, leaving ripples of decadent dark chocolate and ground coffee in its wake. Sweeter notes of lemon curd and peanut brittle cut through the swell to reveal delicate hints of creamy raisin fudge and hazelnut. The allure of this rare dram continues with suggestions of more medicinal, spicy notes. Menthol, fresh lemongrass, aniseed, clove and white pepper emerge from rich, smoky depths. FINISH: Sweet and peat collide with creamy vanilla fudge, dark cocoa powder, and a warm, woody clove tingle. A sharp, intense, and satisfyingly long finish.
- Glasgow Gin (700ml)Glasgow, SCOTLAND$120. 00Bottle$1440.00 DozenABV: 43.3%
Launched in 2017 and featuring the iconic Wellington statue on the bottle, Glasgow gin has become a hit with locals and gin-lovers alike. In order to capture the distinctive Glasgow character, the creators knew it had to be bold and cheeky but also have a soft and sweet side: Consequently, the light and fruity base is a quadruple-distilled pure grain spirit made from 100% wheat while the botanical selection includes juniper, coriander seeds, angelica root, lemon and orange peel, cassia bark, ground nutmeg, cinnamon bark, orris root and elderberries. The result is a fun, fresh and fruity, gin with a surprisingly soft sweetness and sherbety finish. Try it with with a slice of pear or twist of lime. 43.3% Alc./Vol.

2021 Clemens Busch Marienburg Riesling SpatleseMosel, GERMANY$94. 99Bottle$1139.88 DozenABV: 7.5%Closure: CorkClemens and Rita Busch are one of the pioneering organic, and now biodynamic, producers working in Germany. As the fifth generation winemaker at this estate, Clemens stopped using herbicides in 1976, then in 1984 he and wife Rita converted to organics. They were among the first in Germany to commit to organic viticulture and led the movement establishing an association of organic growers in 1986. The estate converted to biodynamics entirely in 2005, earning certifications from the EU and Respekt-Biodyn.
Based in Pünderich, almost all of the vines they work are on the slopes of the Marienburg, and unique for the Mosel, feature parcels planted on the three main colours of slate; blue, red, and grey. In the winery Clemens works with wild yeasts, and ferments mostly in very old 1000-litre barrels. Nothing is added to the wines at any stage, apart from a touch of sulphur at bottling. Most of the wines at the Busch estate are vinified dry, and they are rich, complex and often powerful. They age very beautifully, gaining in complexity and texture. However, the sweet and noble sweet wines from the estate are also impressive, ranking among the finest wines made anywhere on the Mosel.

The 2021 Marienburg Spätlese is pure, bright and flinty on the reductive but fruit-intense and concentrated nose. Round, refined and elegant on the palate, this is a refined and saline, very delicate and stimulating Spätlese with a pure and salivating finish. It's young but digestible due to a rather moderate dose of sulfur. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022. Drink 2026 - 2050.

Here's the opportunity to get a GG-type dry riesling for a friendly price. Excellent ripeness and finesse, the stone-fruit and grapefruit character beautifully intertwined with the minerally acidity. Long, herbal and wet-stone finish that tells the full Mosel riesling story. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drink or hold.

Stuart Pigott - JamesSuckling.comThe 2020er Riesling vom blauen Schiefer, as it is referred to on the main part of the label, comes from early pickings in the blue-slate sector (Fahrlay) of the Pündericher Marienburg. It offers a beautiful nose made of white peach, pear, a hint of earthy spices, wet stone, floral elements, and smoke. The wine proves juicy rather than bone-dry on the palate, where riper flavors play with one’s senses. The finish is still slightly rough and backward. This wine now only needs a few years of patience to fully shine. It could then easily exceed our early high expectations especially as it reveals its superbly floral and fresh array of flavors. Drink 2024-2032.

Adrien Renoir Les Annees Solera Extra Brut ChampagneChampagne, FRANCE$370. 00Bottle$4440.00 DozenABV: 12%Closure: CorkAdrien Renoir is one the brightest new talents to emerge from Champagne in recent years. Working with his father Vincent for several years at their 7 hectare domaine in Verzy, in 2019 the wines were re-launched under his name, and in quick time has caught the attention of educated Champagne drinkers the world over. One of the first changes he insisted on was abandoning herbicides completely, and the estate vineyards are certified organic as of 2020. Oak use too has increased, along with more focus on specific parcels for his lieu-dits bottlings. In the cellar fermentations occur with native yeasts, lees stirring is practiced, and there is no sulphur used at bottling.
Adrien started this solera in 2013, and is 100% Verzy Pinot Noir. First released in 2021, the wine spends 24 months on lees in bottle prior to disgorgement.
Other Reviews....
Disgorged in March 2021 with one gram per liter dosage, Renoir's new NV Solera Les Années derives from a solera established in 2013. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of pear, dried white flowers, mandarin orange, white cherries and freshly baked bread, it's medium to full-bodied, seamless and vinous, with a bright spine of acidity, a pretty pinpoint mousse and a long, saline finish. Youthfully tightly wound, I can't wait to see how it performs with a few years on cork. Drink 2021 - 2035.

Les Epinettes is 100% Pinot Noir from a vineyard planted selection massale in 1971 where the soils are primarily clay-limestone with some chalk. Raised 100% in older barrels, the wine spends 36 months on lees before disgorged at very low Extra Brut levels around 1g/L.
Other Reviews....
Entirely Pinot Noir, the 2018 Champagne Les Epinettes has a rich straw hue and a seductive cologne of bergamot, clove, currants, and kirsch. Continuing to the palate, it is saturated and full-bodied, with its pillowing mousse creating a weightless feel before it becomes more savory, with notable salinity, a glycerol-rich texture, and notes of citrus oils. A serious wine, it will hold up over the coming 10-15 years. Drink 2024-2040.

Fred Savart is one of the most engaging and energetic vignerons currently in Champagne. Based in the village of Ecueil where most of his holdings are located, Fred also farms a handful of vines across into Villiers-aux-Noeuds, along with most recently accessing plots in Le Mesnil and Oger. His wines are largely based on Pinot Noir, with a smaller amount of Chardonnay, and while initially there was a focus on fermentation in stainless steel, more increasingly his wines are raised in barriques and demi-muids. The 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve des 2 Freres raises the quality bar higher, offering scents of cedar, dried spices and black cherries. A blend of 85% Grenache and 15% Serine (Syrah), aged in new barrels, it's full-bodied, rich and plush in feel, finishing long and velvety. I've said this before, but it bears repeating—I'm not usually a fan of maturing Grenache in small-format new oak vessels, but it seems to work in this case, resulting in a wine that's somehow dessert-rich, yet savory and not overbearing, with a soft, almost pillowy impression on the palate. 2019 Domaine Jean-Marc et Thomas Bouley VolnayBurgundy, FRANCE$165. 00Bottle$1980.00 DozenABV: 13%Closure: CorkThomas Bouley is very much the insiders secret, more famous with his fellow vignerons than with collectors chasing the next 'superstar' seen on social media. That Thomas resists putting his name on the front label of his wines (preferring to keep his father's) is typical of his humble and low key approach. Based in Volnay may also add to his relative anonymity, however we suspect this is changing rapidly as word gets out of just how spectacular his wines are, and of the continual improvement seen since he began working with his father in the early 2000's.
Meticulous attention to detail in both the vineyard and winery are notable here, and key to why Thomas is so highly regarded by his peers. Yields are moderate, and in the cellar whole cluster ferments are used more with his clay rich sites (Pommard Fremiers, Volnay Clos des Chenes), while those with thin white soils (Pommard Rugiens-Hauts, Volnay Caillerets) are largely destemmed. New oak use is minimal, and each wine spend two winters on fine lees before bottling.

Aromas of raspberries and plums mingled with hints of orange rind, sweet spices and forest floor introduce Bouley's 2019 Volnay Village, a medium to full-bodied, supple and seamless wine that's lively and penetrating, concluding with a long, saline finish. As I've written before, this cuvée blends the rich, clay soils of lieux-dits Poisots, Famines and Cros Martin with the thinner, whiter soils of Ez Blanches above the Clos de Chênes; but in 2019, the wine's tone is set by Ez Blanches, even if it only amounts to one-third of the blend. At least 5 or more years of patience is strongly recommended as this will definitely need time. Drink from 2031+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Les Brouillards has turned out especially well. Opening in the glass with aromas of red berries and plums mingled with sweet soil tones, hints of raw cocoa and rose petals, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and seamless, with terrific concentration and beautifully refined tannins. Boillot observes, and I agree, that this site's tannins have become much more refined over the last five years. Drink 2025 - 2045.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)The 2019 Volnay Les Brouillards 1er Cru immediately hits a level up from Les Angles, offering scents of vibrant red berry fruit, sous-bois and a hint of morels, all delineated and focused. There is much more brightness and energy on the palate of black plum, raspberry and allspice, leading to a nicely structured, quite peppery finish that lingers in the mouth. Excellent. A more deeply pitched nose exhibits notes of red and blue pinot fruit with more evident earth and humus nuances. The rich, full-bodied and imposingly scaled flavors possess excellent size, weight and power while delivering first-rate length on the austere finale. A much spicier combination is built from notes of both red and dark currant with lovely violet, lavender and rose petal nuances. Whiffs of herbal tea and spice add breadth to the cool, ripe and well-layered nose of various dark berries along with ample amounts of earth and sauvage nuances. There is excellent punch suffusing the succulent but powerful medium-bodied flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract before terminating in an almost painfully intense and hugely long finish. I really like the texture as this is generous yet very clearly constituted for extended cellaring. As it often is, this is the best wine in the range and with the most development potential. Of the three Barolo samples I tasted from barrel (including Arione and Cerretta, which are also from Serralunga d'Alba), the Giacomo Conterno 2018 Barolo Francia was the furthest behind and the hardest to pin down at this stage in its infancy. I have opened my range of scores accordingly to compensate for the magical unknowns that are likely to occur as the wine moves toward greater harmony and integration before its commercial release. The wine is linear and pointedly focused, lacking the width and volume it will gain when given more time to flesh out and relax. The aromas are also quite primary and simple at this point, with dark cherry and even a hint of ripe strawberry ceding gradually to grilled herb, blue flower and baked brick. This vintage of Barolo Francia will require patience. Drink 2027 - 2055.

Monica Larner - Wine Advocate (Dec 2021)The 2018 Barolo Francia is powerful, deep and also a touch austere. It shows the edginess of all the 2018s, but also has a feeling of textural creaminess that adds tons of character. Spice, menthol, leather and a whole range of balsamic overtones build into the deep, imposing finish. Roberto Conterno decided to forego his Barolo Monfortino in 2018, opting instead to blend all the casks into his Francia bottling. When that happens, Francia often surprises down the road. That could very well turn out to be the case here. Drink 2024-2043.

93/6/1% cabernet sauvignon/malbec/cabernet franc. Hand picked, 50% wild ferment, 21 days on skins, matured for 19 months in French oak (100% new). If you haven't had the pleasure of drinking one of these cabernets as an older wine, you may not get the full scope of the young wine on release. Here, today, it is tightly coiled, spicy and concentrated. The savoury, biscuity oak we often associate with good quality Bordeaux is here in spades, and it encases the kaleidoscopic flavours that lie possible beyond. However, in 10 years, this wine transforms into a powerful and expansive wine of depth, grace and evocation. From one of Margaret River's greatest all-time vintages, this is a wine for the ages. The Nervi estate is the oldest in the DOCG of Gattinara, north of Piedmont, founded in 1906 by original owner Luigi Nervi. A long time admirer of the wines and friends of the owners at the time, Roberto Conterno (of Giacomo Conterno fame) purchased a 90% stake in the winery in 2018, renaming it Conterno Nervi. A relatively new designation, Gattinara became a DOCG in 1990, and while the wines show similarities to those of Piedmont, generally Gattinara reds have a more elevated feel, savoury and structured, with plenty of acidity and fine tannins allowing for great longevity.
Effectively the ‘Classico’, this is comprised of four key plots, Casacce, Garavoglie, Molsino and Valferana. Nervi's Gattinara is fermented and macerated in steel at controlled temperatures for 25–30 days, followed by 30 months in large Stockinger Austrian botti.

There are 20 cru vineyards in the Gattinara DOCG appellation, with Valferana sitting near the geographical centre of the commune at a height of 370 metres. Although it sits a little lower than Molsino, Valferana doesn’t get as much sunlight or warmth, facing predominantly west, and it is one of the steepest crus. Most vintages, the wine has a tight, focused frame. ‘Valferana’ is the more austere of the two crus, with a tightly wound core gifted by Gattinara’ s porphyry-gravel soil; the wine is disciplined with myriad mineral nuances. The wine is fermented and macerated in tini (large conical wooden vats) for 3–4 weeks, then aged for another 40 months in various large wood formats.

As all Nebbiolo lovers know well, this mighty Piedmont grape is especially sensitive to place. That's the main takeaway with the Conterno Nervi 2018 Gattinara Vigna Valferana. This is a west-facing vineyard at 300 to 350 meters in altitude that is characterized by volcanic soils and slightly cooler conditions, resulting in an etched and very focused expression of Nebbiolo (as opposed to Molsino that tends to be open-knit and more concentrated). Valferana is tightly chiseled and crisp, with blue flower, sour cherry, tobacco smoke, underbrush and candied orange peel. The wine offers a complete picture of the grape from Gattinara with some extra tannic edge to carry it through the years. Drink 2024 - 2042.
