    Other reviews... This Jamaican rum-finished Cardhu has a nose dominated by grapefruit flesh, with white pepper, ripening mango, zested lime, clementine peel, and grilled pineapple. The palate has bitter citrus and grapefruit acidity, pepper, clove, and a belligerent rush of cask-strength alcohol that cries out to be quelled with water. Once subdued, the rum sweetness shines alongside flavors of dried mango, green banana, vanilla, and aniseed. 86 points - whiskyadvocate.com

    ...More of this year's very esoteric and lavishly illustrated Special Releases. This one matured in refill American oak and was then finished in Jamaican rum. They've also filled some of those very lovely 20cl bottles, as they did in the past with some Port Ellens and some… Loch Dhu. And the Classic Malts, naturally. No, nothing to do with shrinkflation. Colour: white wine. Nose: a little fruity glue at first, or nail polish, with some peach and strawberry syrups, then indeed a few tropical fruits from the rum, mostly pineapples, as well as fresh raisin rolls. This was finished in Jamaican pot-still rum but I'm not fining anything really 'funky'. Probably not what they would have tried to come up with in the first place. With water: perhaps, indeed, a little olive oil, which would make the texture rather a little thicker on the nose. Some good folks are making chocolate using olive oil, which I find rather good too. Nice nose, nonetheless. Mouth (neat): really to my liking, rather spicy but more malt whisky than rumsky, if you see what I mean. It's just a little hot. More raisin rolls. With water: the rum's influence got more obvious, with more pineapple, a little more olive oil, Juicy Fruit… Finish: medium, on allspice, honey and, perhaps, papaya ice cream. A touch of viognier too but indeed, viognier can get very tropical. A wee salty smokiness in the aftertaste. Comments: you could argue that we need no one's help to make our own rumskies (try 85% young Highland Park or Clynelish with 15% young Hampden or Worthy Park, for example) but it's good. Wat's more, I don't think 'Cardhu needs rum' was the message in the first place, was it? 85 points - whiskyfun.com

    Other reviews... White pepper and orange on a wave of high alcohol grow into a spicier proposition with allspice, apple, melon, Chinese pear, and mincemeat. Silky mouthfeel with candied orange, warm sherry notes, and pulsing spices, developing more of a waxy texture mid-palate, followed by a slightly bland ending of vanilla and star fruit. Water enhances the fruitiness, teasing out herbal notes and ground ginger. 87 points - whiskyadvocate.com
    ...The cask-bill here gathered refill American oak, PX and oloroso. Hope this gumbo won't have  offset the Distillery character, but probably not, Diageo do care about Clynelish! What's sure is that it was a good idea to hire Syd Barrett's little nephew to do the names and stories… Colour: straw. Nose: it's pretty fascinating to have this one after the more elementary (in the best sense) TWS. Nutshell, the sherry has erased a part of the bright fruitiness and added some wine, walnuts and teas. English breakfast tea, naturally. With water: a little more fruitiness but walnut skins and other fruit peelings, and even eucalyptus tea tend to dominate. But the paraffin and beeswax are there, hurray. Mouth (neat): the fruits and rather a lot of paraffin are having the upper hand this time. Once more, a little bitter oak coating that, even chlorophyl. With water: very good, if a little cask-heavy indeed. A notch harsh, perhaps, otherwise oranges and a little honey are adding some needed lightness, although this isn't fruity whisky by any means. Finish: rather long, but the oaks and their spices are at the helm. Some raisins from the PX (I would suppose) in the aftertaste, plus a faint saltiness. Comments: super-good, it's just that I shouldn't have had the rather pristine young 2011 just before this one. My bad. 84 points - whiskyfun.com

    The Californian project of two classic houses of France, Racines is led by vignerons Étienne de Montille and Brian Sieve of Burgundy and Rodolphe Péters of Champagne. The aim of this collaboration is to create a range of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the cool-climate of the Sta. Rita Hills, in Santa Barbara County, drawing upon each individual’s experience and knowledge from the Old World. The resulting wines, thanks to careful handling and “classic” (as in less hands-on) winemaking, highlight each specific terroir with purity and transparency.
    Two north-facing parcels of Chardonnay make up the Bentrock vineyard. One sits a little higher, overlooking the Sta. Rita Hills, in a very exposed perch on rocky soils; the lower one, protected by the hilltop parcel, is located slightly to the east and has more soil (a mix of sandy and clay loam).

    A rich, effusive wine, the 2019 Chardonnay Sanford & Benedict offers a stunning expression of this site. All the classic S&B signatures come through, kicked up with an extra touch of textural richness. Creamy and silky in the glass, the 2019 is outrageously beautiful. Lemon confit, marzipan, white flowers and tangerine oil are some of the many notes that build in a soft, silky Chardonnay that dazzles from start to finish. Impressive. Drink: 2023-2031.

Sweet red cherry, sage, rose petal, blood orange and lavender give this beguiling, layered Pinot tons of complexity. Savory, wild and constantly changing in the glass, the Rinconada has so much to offer. This brilliant, captivating Pinot from Racines has so much to offer. Drink: 2024-2039.

    The 2019 Pinot Noir Sanford & Benedict is a powerful, brooding wine. The high percentage of stems (75%) undoubtedly adds savory intensity, but it also masks some site character. The 2019 is a gorgeous wine, but it is also austere and not an especially typical expression of this site. I hope to have a chance to taste it in a decade. Drink: 2024-2039.

    A ripe but cool, pure and airy nose freely offers up its notes of plum liqueur, violet, lavender and wet stone. There is impressive intensity to the chiseled medium-bodied flavors that possess very fine mid-palate density as well as an almost aggressive minerality on the moderately austere, compact, long and balanced finale. This is excellent and historically, is a wine that always ages well. Drink through 2032+.

    The 2020 Volnay Les Taillepieds 1er Cru comes from two parcels is 90% whole cluster. Brambly red berry fruit is mingling with black pepper, clove and touches of undergrowth. The palate is medium-bodied with quite succulent tannins, more rondeur here than the other Volnays, plush and quite luxuriant wiht a sensual and very pure finish. Superb. Drink 2025-2048.

The delicious and vibrant medium-bodied flavors possess solid mid-palate density that contrasts somewhat with the austere and lingering finish where the tannins are presently slightly raspy.     The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has one-third whole bunch. It has a precise bouquet and very pure with ebullient red fruit laced with crushed stone. Wonderful focus. The palate is medium-bodied with silky smooth tannins, fine depth and cohesion, well-integrated oak with dark fruit and brown spices emerging towads the persistent finish. Excellent. Closure: Diam. Drink 2025-2050.

    Very erratic rows here, I am told, so it is ploughed by horse. 13% alcohol, 3.65pH, one third whole cluster. I loved the bouquet of this wine which has ethereal qualities. Then, on the palate, I found it a little less concentrated than I was expecting. It will still be a delicious wine though, in the medium term.

    The Grandfather release in this consignment breaks the fifty year barrier and is one of the earliest (and oldest) Family Cask bottlings we've been able to secure to date (a 1954 is currently listed at $20K if '66 isn't your year). Almost certainly nearing the distillery's final warehouse stocks from the era, it is investment grade whisky, obviously desirable for any collection or premium bar as single malts of this rarity continue to defy the odds, increasing in value and becoming the 'assets' of a decreasing few. Purists who insist on opening a bottle may expect a punchy and slightly wilder ride than many contemporary Glenfarclas' while also delivering an amazingly, deep sherry infused experience that should set a benchmark for well-aged Speyside malts. We have two only from a measly outturn of 146 bottles. Distilled in 1966 and bottled from a sherry butt in Spring 2017. 41.7% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

    "Superb delivery, I must say!" - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2022

    The softer side of Speyside is on show in this deeply coloured Tamnavulin. Finished in three different types of sherry casks, the nose offers a delicate and gently sweet sherry infusion leaving the malt intact, American oak adding an undercurrent of vanillas. At first dryish and Oloroso-like, by mid palate this develops impressive weight and mouthfeel with a brief burst of fruit cake and a thrust of warming spices. The finish lingers with more dried fruits (think PX), bitter peel and a late succulence. The wine input is sensitively handled, and at just 40%, the depth of flavour unexpected. Prepare to be surprised.

    ...Rather exotic on the nose, reminiscent of bananas foster, fresh ginger root, shaved coconut, dried apricot, and orange blossom.     Tete botanical liqueur is released once annually so stocks are always fairly limited. In its creation, Ume plums are soaked in single-distillation pure shochu for one year along with nine Japanese botanicals: a piquancy springs from slowly macerated sansho and ginger root, while herbal elements come to the fore with wintergreen and a perfume of ume flower. Mandarin provides both brightness and acidity. Spicy cinnamon imparts light, woody notes and dried bonito heightens and unifies Tete's botanicals. This myriad of flavours results in a complex liqueur with a mouthwatering finish that lingers. 12% Alc./Vol.

    Nankobai ume (plum) is the highest expression of the fruit, prized for its aroma and flavour. Centuries-old methods are employed in the making of this liqueur version. Plums are carefully harvested, cleaned and washed by hand, then macerated in a premium ginjo sake base. The result has earnt Matsuurachi a reputation as one of the best plum liqueurs in Japan. Light, mellow and refreshing, you'll find subtle confectionery notes of marzipan and toasted almond biscotti alongside the fruity bruised apple, kalamansi and tamarillo.     The 2017 Turpino is quite reticent, which is surprising given the style and personality of the year. Black cherry, pine, menthol, licorice and chocolate develop nicely over time. Readers should give the 2017 at least a few years in bottle, as it is not at all ready to drink now. The 2017 embodies the house style at Querciabella these days nicely. The wine is rich and deep, but not at all overdone. Drink 2024 - 2037.

The palate begins with warm baked fruits, watermelon, crystalized sugar, clove, pepper, Red Vines, red apple, taffy, and fruity red wine before a spicy finish.     ...Lovely bottle with some kind of mermaid, would go well for suntan lotion too. No, really. I hope the wood treatment remained kind of moderate, because I think I have noticed that they've been cranking them up with last year's SRs. For example, this is ex-bourbon (good) and wine (bad) casks. Wine casks, wazzat? What is 'a wine cask'? Could we remain focused on the whiskies? Colour: gold. Nose: cask-driven. Vanilla, cakes, Nutella, macchiato. Starbucks whisky. With water: more Nutella. I just hope no orang-outangs have been harmed along the process. Mouth (neat): good for sure but indeed, there is a lot of Nescafé and Nutella. With water: roasted hazelnut and more Nescafé. Finish: medium, very dry, pretty oaky. Comments: I can't quite see how and why this would be 'Rare and Exceptional', but indeed it is rather 'Fair and Okay'. Now I've heard they'll soon launch new expressions of Ord that will be much closer to the Distillery's brilliant own character, in the vein of the magical official 28 and 30 of old.     This wine displays a dark garnet color that suggests a robust and savory wine to follow. Indeed, the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino does reveal a rather austere approach with dried fruit, blackcurrant and fig.     In 2018, Andrea Costanti used fewer tonneaux than usual, opting instead for larger, less oxidative casks, a significant portion of which were new. This lends some oak nuances but doesn’t detract. Aromas of exotic spice, violet and chestnut are amplified by a touch of volatile acidity. Those dark purple floral notes carry through to the palate, which brags lovely weight with balanced proportions and mouthwatering, citrussy acidity. The tannins are weighing down the finish right now, but give this another year or so to come together and it should be a joy to drink. Drink: 2024-2037.

    Bryan Martin has been producing thought-provoking wines in Murrumbateman wine country since 2001. Their Estate vineyard is managed sustainably, focusing on soil health, and foregoing synthetic chemicals, herbicides, and fertilisers. Fruit is also sourced for their Regional Series from the surrounding Young, Hilltops & Canberra District regions.

    The Estate Riesling is sourced from mostly 25-year-old vines grown on granite soils at 650 metres elevation. After approximately 24 hours on skins, the fruit was direct-pressed to two ceramic eggs for fermentation and a year-long élevage with lees. It was then racked to old foudre where it rested before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.

    Gosh this is good. We know this from prior, but the reminder is strong and evocative in the glass. It’s that powdery texture mixed with glass shards of acidity. The strong scents of fresh squeezed lemon, perfect Tommy’s Margaritas, green apple freshness. Intensity and crystalline texture yet so much drinkability and refreshment. Faint savouriness? That too. And a quartz-like minerally finish matched to light almond with citrus spiked over the lot. Wow. Drink 2021 - 2035.

    That puckering texture! It’s a delight. Honey nut cornflakes, green apple, lime, halva, green herbs and pink grapefruit tang through it. That chew is delicious. The wine is fragrant, lots going on, it’s a treat to drink and feels destined for dinner tables, coming alive with food. Drinkability is through the roof and quiet complexity in tow.     Pax Wines is the venture of husband and wife Pax and Pamela Mahle, who craft a range of "Rhone-influenced" Syrah from a selection of vineyards on the cooler, coastal areas of Sonoma. An ex-sommelier, Mahle swapped "the bowtie for some dirty boots" - in his own words - focusing on elegant and aromatic Rhone varieties strongly influenced by the time he spent visiting cellars in France; Raymond Trollat and Pierre Gonon are amongst his strongest reference points. All his Syrah are single varietal, 100% whole cluster and foot-crushed with no commercial yeast employed. The resulting wines are marked by a distinctive freshness, "much finesse" and "much purity", as noted by Antonio Galloni.

    The 2021 Syrah Sonoma Hillsides is towering and statuesque in bearing from the very first taste. I don’t think I have ever tasted a Sonoma Hillsides with this much finesse, this much purity. A wine of vertical energy, the Sonoma Hillsides possesses tremendous depth from start to finish. In many vintages the Hillsides leans towards a darker expression of Syrah. The 2021, on the other hand, is marked by more of a red/purplish fruit profile, with bright floral and citrus overtones that confer freshness. Once again, Pax Mahle made one of the truly epic wines of the year. His Sonoma Hillsides has been one of the very finest wines in Northern California for a number of years now. Drink: 2024-2036.

    The base Côte Rôtie from Rostaing seems to always deliver, and the 2020 Côte Rôtie Ampodium might be the best yet. Deep purple-hued, with a brilliant nose of black raspberries, spring flowers, camphor, scorched earth, and graphite, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a round, lush mouthfeel, and building tannins. I've always thought the 2010 was the greatest vintage for this cuvée, but this is going to give it a run for its money.

    An undeniable success in the vintage, and one of the top wines, the 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape Pure is a spectacular blend of almost all Grenache, all from sandy soils and 100+-year-old vines, that was aged all in an older foudre. Rayas-like with its perfumed kirsch, rose petal, dried spice and pepper aromas and flavors, this medium to full-bodied wine has beautiful mid-palate depth, a pure silk texture and building tannin on the finish. Incredibly rich in the vintage, it should age beautifully for 12-15 years or more. Drink 2014-2026.
    These awesome wines are made by the young, yet incredibly talented, Julien Barrot. Now producing just two cuvees from his 32 acres of sandy soils, he first took over the winemaking in 2002 and has since produced one spectacular vintage after another (don’t miss his 2010s!). The winemaking here is very traditional with some stem inclusion and aging all in tank and very old foudre. The wines typically show rich, voluptuous, yet elegant profiles and are relatively accessible in their youth, yet also age gracefully.

    Around the globe, gin is commonly made from grain based distillates. However, most Japanese gins are based on shochu. Now long-time brewer, Umegae Shuzo in Nagasaki have bought the past to the present with a new sake-based 'Gin-ovation'. Gin was first made in Japan during the Edo Period in Nagasaki for the Dutch traders living on the island of Dejima. Inspired by this history, the idea to produce gin came from the company President, Tetsuya Nagano. Sake develops an off-smell called hineka over time, so Umegae Shuzō distill it within one week of pressing. They produce gin from autumn to winter, which overlaps with the busy sake brewing season, but Nagano insists that the freshness of rice is key to Yokitsuki’s quality. The first impression is citrus, followed by a fruity sweetness, which makes sense, given Yokitsuki is characterized by non-traditional, locally grown botanicals including loquat, strawberry, lemon, mikan, and Umegae’s namesake, plum branch. Sweet and tart with acidity and intensity of flavour from the fruit, the plum branch provides a pleasant woody foundation upon which the fruity botanicals pop out. The presentation is stunning. The inaugural batch from October 2019 quickly sold out, and a second batch of around the same size in January 2020 followed suit. It takes about 2,700 bottles of sake to make 1,000 bottles of gin, so from a business standpoint, the project is expensive, but it's also demonstrated a new potential for Japan's most famous tipple. 40% Alc./Vol.
