The oldest working distillery in the highlands (est 1786), the world-famous Strathisla is the foundation of the Chivas Regal blends. In order to secure supply of this exceptional malt whisky, Chivas Brothers purchased the operation in 1950. Few and far between are bottlings from this distillery, which forms the foundation of the Chivas Regal blends (hence, why it's such a small player in terms of official bottlings).

The 12 year old distillery expression was reintroduced in 2002, but independents have been just as rare, most coming from Gordon & Macphail, and mostly of considerable age. This example from Duncan Taylor is an impressive 40 years old, boasting cask strength to boot! A combination not seen from any Gordon MacPhail bottling we have procured. 48.8% Alc./Vol.

Domaine Chanson has undergone a significant transformation, pivoting from its historical identity as a traditional negociant house to a premier estate-focused producer. Now managing approximately 95 hectares, the domaine is among the most significant landowners in the Cote de Beaune. Under the direction of Vincent Avenel, with head viticulturalist Justine Savoye and cellarmaster Lucy Auger, there is a meticulous emphasis on vineyard health; the estate's core Cote de Beaune holdings achieved full organic certification in 2024. In the cellar, a technical, "infusion-led" philosophy utilises a state-of-the-art chilling tunnel to preserve varietal purity and acidity. Winemaking is precise and site-specific, typically employing roughly 50% whole-cluster fermentation for reds and conservative new oak (20% for whites, 25-30% for reds).

Deeply colored. Very ripe but still nicely fresh aromas of black cherry, cassis, violet and a hint of anise lead to super-sleek, vibrant and stony medium weight flavors that possess a lovely texture on the bitter pit fruit-inflected finale. This will need to develop more to merit the upper end of my projected range. Drink through 2030+.

Moderately generous wood is present on the very ripe but not jammy aromas of dark currant, poached plum, spice and just turned earth. The wood can also be found on the palate of the beautifully textured and powerful medium weight plus flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the robust, palate soaking and very firm finale. Patience strongly recommended. Drink through 2032+.

Dense crimson colour. A significant concentration of dark red fruit, intense raspberry. Somewhat dry tannins, which is part of being Grèves, and good acidity. I think this will all come together. It will always be a powerful wine but the fruit has retained its freshness. Drink from 2032-2038.

Jasper Morris MW - Inside Burgundy

This concentrated, powerful wine has superb substance and style with its ripe plum, mulberry fruit aromas, and hints of leather, bay leaf, and black tea. The texture is tannic and full-bodied, with enough potential to age for 30 years if one is so inclined. The domaine's two hectares here are spread over three parcels – each grown, picked, fermented, and aged separately. They will be reunited and bottled in March or April of next year. Open in five to seven years and drink for 30 more. Drink 2027-2055.

A fresher nose is composed by notes of liqueur-like red berries, kirsch, rose petal and enough oak influence to point out. The middleweight flavors aren't as dense but they are notably finer with evident minerality adding a sense of lift to the firm, serious, compact and built-to-age finale. Patience. A beautiful full fresh purple. The nose is exquisite even in the large-scale eyes of the vintage. This is a luxurious and noble Beaune with very good acidity. The deep, dark raspberry fruit absolutely fills the palate, the tannins still need to refine with the second half of the elevage but the finish promises a very fine wine. Drink from 2030-2038.

The 2022 Chanson Clos de Fèves from Chanson is a classic, with ripe plum and cassis fruit and notes of mint, black tea, earth and smoke. The texture is firm and tannic, but not overly so, with moderate density and a finish that winds down slowly on the palate. The grapes are from the domaine's monopole of more than four hectares near Cent Vignes; they are fermented as whole clusters with a relatively firm regime of punching down to deliver this elegant, classic wine that will open with three to five years in bottle and age for a further 20. Closure: Cork

Domaine Trapet is Gevrey-Chambertin royalty currently undergoing a serious technical renaissance as the sixth generation, Pierre and Louis, take the lead. Building on a biodynamic pedigree established in 1995, the brothers have recently converted over 55,000 vines to the high-density échalas (single-stake) system, a massive manual undertaking that helps push phenolic maturity while naturally lowering potential alcohols by roughly 0.5%. This focus on transparency continues in the cellar through high whole-cluster fermentations where they painstakingly remove the central stems by hand to capture aromatic lift without the green or astringent tannins typically found in the stalks. By pairing this level of manual precision with modest new oak that rarely exceeds 50% even at the Grand Cru level, Trapet has successfully redefined the local style, favoring elegance and soil-driven clarity over sheer power.

    Other Reviews...
This is the most floral wine in the range with a huge array of such elements adding elegance to the poached plum, dark currant, smoked game, exotic tea and moderate wood aromas. The gorgeously textured, mineral-driven and overtly muscular big-bodied flavors possess a Zen-like harmony on the superbly long, complex and built-to-age finale where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This is potentially spectacular and a wine that should amply reward 15 to 20 years of aging. Drink through 2037+.

The 2022 Chambertin Grand Cru is another terrific wine from Trapet, unfurling in the glass with deep aromas of plums, cherries and sweet berries mingled with hints of warm spices, rose petals and coniferous forest floor. Full-bodied, ample and satiny, it's seamless and complete, with a layered core of fruit framed by sweet, powdery tannins. It's as impressive for its harmony as it is for its plenitude.

The 2022 Chambertin Grand Cru, 100% whole bunches and 60% new oak, is blessed with a complex nose: blackberry, bilberry, light estuarine scents and hints of pain d'épices. Wonderful delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins and a firm grip - perhaps a more demonstrative Chambertin in the making with a very sustained and grippy finish. Superb, but like the Chapelle, drinkers will require patience. Drink 2030-2060.

Concentrated youthful purple. There is a firmly regal quality to the nose. First you think it is all there, then you have to search, thirdly an immense wave of fruit, but light on its feet, sweeps right across the palate, ethereal and with its feet on the ground. An extraordinarily long finish indeed. A breathtaking Chambertin. Drink from 2035.

The 2022 Trapet Chambertin impresses with its luminous blackberry and fig fruit aromas shaded with hints of earth and spice. It is a wine of superb density and incredible length with a marvellous velvety texture; massive tannins can give a slightly rustic feel to the wine, but with time, these will resolve to create a wine that will last for decades to come. The grapes are from the domaine's 1.85 hectares of ideally-placed vineyards that are now trained on stakes and grown without hedging to yield this magnificent wine. Drink 2035-2075.

Slightly more prominent wood influence is present on the ripe and admirably pure aromas of essence of red and dark berries along with a wide array of pretty floral hints. The mouthfeel of the larger-bodied flavors is completely different as here it is less mineral-driven and more generously proportioned, even seductive, yet with no lack of power on the dusty, serious and superbly long finish that isn't quite as structured. I like the balance and this should also age effortlessly. Drink through 2034+.

The 2022 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru is almost as elegant as the Latricières this year, soaring from the glass with scents of plums, raspberries, rose petals and spices, followed by a full-bodied, ample and perfumed palate that's seamless and refined, with terrific depth at the core, tangy acids and a long, rose-inflected finish.

The 2022 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru is 100% whole bunches. It has more complexity and nuance on the nose than the Latricières, with crushed limestone and white flowers filtering through the layers of red fruit, very harmonious and seductive. The medium-bodied palate has quite a powerful entry, sorbet-fresh with hints of orange zest and tangerine interwoven through the black fruit. It's grippy and quite spicy on the long finish. This will require several years in bottle but will be worth your patience. Drink 2028-2055.

A little less concentrated in colour, with the whole bunches slightly more prominent. There is marvellous density through the middle with the limestone slabs of rock lifting the wine. Then another burst of concentrated seedless raspberry lifting up behind. Very distinguished. Drink from 2030.

Rich, texturally voluminous and enveloping yet wonderfully fresh and refined all at once, this iconic Chardonnay has the palate presence and persistence of a Grand Cru Burgundy.

Firmly entrenched in the top echelon of Australian Chardonnay, the outstanding 2023 vintage has delivered a spectacular rendition of this Margaret River icon.

Brilliant very pale straw colour with green highlighted edges and a watery hue. Soaring through the olfactory senses with fabulous intensity are aromas of nectarine, white peach and pear which are interwoven with dried honey, biscuity nougat, cashew, crème brulee, bees wax and gun flint. Rich, texturally voluminous and enveloping yet wonderfully fresh and refined all at once, mouth filling nectarine, white peach, pear and dried honey flavours wrap themselves around the palate. The back half is detailed with a complex matrix of biscuity oak, citrusy nougat, subtle roast almond, crème brulee, bees wax, ginger and infusions of gun flint. Boasting magnificent power and drive, it has the palate presence and persistence of a Grand Cru Burgundy. Finishes with epic length.

This brilliant Chardonnay will surely come to be ranked, not only amongst the best ever from this legendary estate, not only among the best from this thrilling region, but among the best Australia has ever made. This is Grand Cru quality at what has sadly become Village pricing. A profound Chardonnay destined to become a bucket list wine. A very pale lemon with a vaguely green hint running through it, this is pristine, intense, beautifully balanced and seamless. The oak has almost been completely absorbed, although it is fair to say that it’ll probably look even better in twelve months. The wine is, however, immensely enjoyable now. The nose reveals hints of apricot flesh, limes, citrus skins, oatmeal, Madagascan vanilla, gentle touches of grilled cashews, stone fruits and jasmine. Such intensity but meshed with freshness, energy and elegance. Powerful but poised, there is incredible length here, seemingly never-ending, with laser-sharp acidity just one of the many components. There is complexity already evident, although one suspects it is a shadow of what is to come. The intensity never wavers for an instant over the full journey. Stunning stuff, it will still be magnificent in twenty years, likely even more so, and still have life ahead of it. Leeuwin have made some mindbogglingly good Chardonnays over the years, but I think none better.

Light bright yellow, a very youthful colour for a 2023, and the bouquet is likewise fresh but also seriously detailed, with creamy lees, malt, nougat, beeswax and custard apple aromas, the palate similarly complex and profound, with a chew of oaky tannins that lingers on the aftertaste. Long, long carry. A very powerful chardonnay, searingly intense and strongly structured, and needing more time yet to come into full harmony. Outstanding.

Lime and finger lime, Solo! (though ideally don’t slam it down fast), fresh pineapple, pear, plenty of clove and ginger oak, aniseed, a light flinty smokiness, honey cashew and white flower perfume. It’s medium-bodied, there’s a richness to fruit and oak here, yet it stays tight and controlled, with pitch-perfect acidity, a light chalkiness to texture, closing with superb length. Power with precision. You can drink it now, sure, though ideally wait for all the components to mesh. It’s an outstanding release. Drink 2028-2038+.

As you’d expect from an excellent vintage and a producer of exceptional chardonnay, this is superb. It glimmers light straw and olive in the glass, and it’s superbly modulated – from the flavours to the texture. It is quite a pared-back style, tight and linear with restrained power, savoury and moreish. Just another cracking Art Series Chardonnay. Drink by 2036.

Jane Faulkner - James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion

This is a case of the planets aligning with one of the great names in Australian Chardonnay from what I think is the finest vintage in the history of West Australian modern winemaking. This is quintessential Leeuwin, controlled power, but with the subtle finesse and delicacy that is the signature of this great vintage. The nose is a wonderful mix of quince paste, cut lime, spice, grapefruit, and a subtle dusting of powdery talc. The palate captures the vintage so well. The flavour profile gradually builds and accelerates with tremendous drive through to a powerfully long finish, which is an essential part of the Leeuwin DNA. And yet all of this is done with such beautiful restraint and a controlled structure. It’s such a young wine at the minute, but you know that deep within there’s real power and latent energy that we’ll see it develop so typically into a great mature Chardonnay with extended cellaring. Up there with the finest releases. Drink 2026-2046.

Rich and powerful yet wonderfully finessed with a weightless, airy like feel.

Pol Roger’s 2018 vintage Champagne is made from the traditional house vintage blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay sourced from 20 Grands and Premiers crus vineyards in the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs regions.
An exuberant mousse slowly subsides into a pale straw coloured base that has pale gold tinged edges and a fine persistent bead coursing through it. Classic Pol Roger nose with exquisite aromas of baked bread, yeast lees and citrus intertwined with delicate roasted almond, nougat and subtle oyster shell like notes. Rich and powerful yet showing wonderful finesse, the refreshing palate is graced with baked bread, citrus, yeast lees and pear flavours. Subtle cashew, nougat and ginger elements lurk underneath. Satiny in it’s flow and possessing a weightless, airy like feel, it finishes crisp, long and enveloping.

Made from 60% Pinot Noir and the rest Chardonnay and pouring a vibrant silver/yellow color, the 2018 Champagne Brut Vintage (like all these wines) was aged in stainless steel without any oak. In the glass, it opens to springy and dewy floral aromas of honeydew melon, fresh flowers, citrus blossoms, and pastry dough. Medium-bodied and inviting, it’s approachable now and takes on a more mineral character on the palate without ever feeling austere. All its components move seamlessly through the palate, with a refined mousse and a kiss of sunny feel on the finish nodding to the warmth of the vintage, but it’s clean and refined all the way through. This is going to improve with age, but it’s quite enjoyable now. Drink over the coming 15 or so years. It was made exclusively from Premier Cru and Grand Cru villages, was aged for 6 years on the lees, and saw 7-8 grams per liter dosage. Drink 2024-2040.

Loch Lomond's peated expressions are usually marketed under their Inchmoan label, a marque that generally receives positive reviews for offering a high-value, punchy, and modern peat experience. This extension to their smoky lines was launched in 2020. There’s no information on the maturation length or the specific cask type, but the PPM level is said to be pretty serious, up around 50! Despite the label's statement of being "Heavily Peated", bottling at only 40% should offset that somewhat, making for a fairly accessible dram. One for those who like smoky but not so strong whisky! Either way, the price is right.

This baby is supposed to be, I quote, the ‘well-travelled one’ from the famed distillery, is that to say they’ve sent these casks off on ships to sail the seven seas, or something of the sort? Colour: white wine. Nose: well, there’s what the colour wouldn’t have led us to suspect: notes of fresh wood, especially ginger, and faint touches of coconut, but the rest keeps the Laphroaig DNA intact, that camphory, peaty side, with overripe apple, but then there’s the arrival of paprika and that’s clearly the cask. Smoked paprika, if you please (indeed, it does exist) … Mouth: the smoke in its rawest, most elemental state, austere, close to charcoal, then smoked paprika again, ripe apple, and a rather surprising touch of pineapple, which one knows can come from the casks. What’s really toned down compared to more classic Laphroaigs, like the ‘regular’ 10 or the CS, are the coastal and medicinal elements, which seem to have been somewhat erased. But it’s still very good. Finish: fairly long, with unexpected notes of exotic fruit liqueurs and syrups. Comments: it’s fairly simple but I find it good, different, surprising. Of course, the 46% is most welcome. 85 points - whiskyfuin./com

Step away from Delord's core range and you get to explore their vintage-dated series. These bottlings frequently deliver greater individuality and texture. The 1976 promises flavours of dried fruits (figs, cherries), chocolate and oak with a slightly rustic rancio character. Patience is a consideration, as these old brandies typically benefit from extended breathing time. Once opened, there's no hurry to finish it. InchDairnie Distillery KinGlassie Double Matured 8 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Fife, SCOTLAND
    $199. 99
    Bottle
    $2399.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46.3%

InchDairnie's peated single malt was first matured for five years in ex-bourbon casks and then a further three years in Amontillado sherry casks. An alluring sniff marries Highland malt with minerals, trace iodine, cured meats and wood smoke. Heavily peated at 50ppm, yet the phenols feel spaced out with air to breathe; the smoke drifting above the oily malt as it rolls over the tongue. Some complexity, too, hinting at poached pears, quince and a salted nuttiness. Very fine tannins and more of that delicious, cocoa-laced, lip smacking peat to finish. Something engaging and different from the southern Highlands here. Ardmore, eat your heart out! 46.3% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... "...not just the first peated whisky from InchDairnie, but also the first single malt...KinGlassie is InchDairnie’s heavily peated whisky. As opposed to FinGlassie, which has already been bottled by a number of independents, it will never be sold to third parties. It’s made using a “special yeast recipe” and with St Fergus peat from Aberdeenshire. The barley, all sourced from within Fife, is peated to 50 parts per million on average. The spec range is 40 to 60 ppm, meaning there can be fluctuations between different vintages of KinGlassie. Initially InchDairnie was planning on releasing just one expression of KinGlassie, the Double Matured... “Our plan was to only take the Amontillado matured whisky out of the cask. The other [KinGlassie] that had been in ex-bourbon casks for the full eight years, we were going to let it rest for another four years. But we tasted the spirit, and it was like… A completely different beast – although actually not a beast nor is the Amontillado overpowering in any way. This whisky is balanced and maybe more subtle than you might expect. For a heavily peated whisky, the smoke influence is relatively secondary, which suits me well.” - wordsofwhisky.com

...Nose: A great seaside note here: smell of fresh ocean spray and seaweed to start. There’s a lovely little smoky tinge but nothing overwhelming. Then some fresh lemon and white sugar. Palate: Minerally and fresh, with bolder smoky notes on the palate, alongside some lovely sweetness in the form of strawberries and vanilla. Finish: Long and drawn out, lots of ashy smoke and just a touch of bitterness. Comment: A really well-balanced coastal dram with something for the peat lover and non-peat lover alike. - whiskymag.com

Mancino Vermouth di Torino Bianco Ambrato Vermouth (750ml)
    ITALY
    $65. 99
    Bottle
    $791.88 Dozen
    ABV: 16%

An artisanal vermouth named after its creator, Italian bartender Giancarlo Mancino (his home town is pictured on the label). The recipe employs 37 botanicals including alpine rose, chamomile, elderflower, gentian and mint, sweet orange and ginger, pink grapefruit, cardamom, liquorice, grapefruit peel and quinine, blended with a Trebbiano di Romagna wine base. Ideal in a Vesper, neat or on the rocks with a wedge of orange, or add a few splashes to a Gin & Vodka Tonic. 16% Vol.

Other reviews... This bittersweet vermouth starts with honeyed richness and then veers towards the bitter side. Very generously flavoured. 5 Stars (Exceptional) - diffordsguide.com

A big but harmonious fruit bowl of a vermouth: Bold, ripe pear, golden raisin, and a juicy hint of pineapple lead into an assertive coconut and almond midpalate. The finish is laced with clove and cardamom, plus grapefruit peel bitterness. Producer recommends mixing into a Spritz with an orange wedge – sure, what's one more fruit in the mix? 93 points - wineenthusiast.com

2024 Shaw & Smith Lenswood Vineyard Chardonnay

    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 12.5%
    Closure: Stelvin

Sourced from blocks three and four in the Lenswood Vineyard, first planted in 1999, this site features east and west-facing aspects at 500 meters above sea level, with brown loam over clay and broken shale and stone on the ridges. The wine was gently whole-bunch pressed and fermented in 500 litre puncheons, with 30% new oak, undergoing full malo and spending 10 months in oak before resting in the tank prior to bottling.

    Other Reviews....
A magic moment kind of wine. Scintillating acidity, a gentle, savoury underbelly, crisp stone fruit and green apple characters, a distinct weave of saline minerality with touches of fino sherry and preserved lemon freshness. Add in nougat and ginger snap biscuit, but all of that with an immense sense of fruit purity, too. Savoury, serious, vivid and refreshing in the same breath. A tour de force of chardonnay. Brilliant. Drink 2026-2038.

Bernard clones 76, 95, 96 planted in 2001. Vineyard sits at 500m. 30% new French oak puncheons. A label refresh too.
Such a finely-etched and classy wine here. White peach, almond cream, aniseed, spice, a flicker of struck match. It’s gently chalky in texture, a crunch to pure acidity, some green olive, ginger and cinnamon, with a saline and limey finish of outstanding length – somewhat like a margarita in a way – and certainly has that refreshing bite to it. Top shelf. Drink 2026-2036+.

Ardnamurchan AD/Paul Launois 2026 Release Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)

    $1919.88 Dozen
    ABV: 57.4%

"Delicate, understated, complex and classy. Take some time out with this one." - whiskybase.com

As far as unpeated Ardnamurchans go, year in year out, the Paul Launois release seems to be the most representative, and the most popular. This is the fifth instalment, matured in ex-bourbon barrels and finished for around 14 months in x-Grand Cru Champagne barriques. There is something about unpeated Ardna' that makes it incredibly approachable, offering a softer side that conveys a buttery, shortbread-like character, especially on the nose. The palate is disarmingly light for a natural strength malt, with those same notes counterpointed by a little orchard fruit, citrus, a saline mineral finish and what feels like drifts of smoke. The best of the series so far - at least, that's what a number of online comments have reported. Given all of the above, it makes you wonder why they don't do more of it? 5726 bottles released at 57.4% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Tasted from a 25ml sample.

Other reviews... Ardnamurchan continues the path with Paul Launois and justifiably so, as the results are pretty decent. The good thing about the maturation in these Champagne casks is that it brings an extra layer to an already excellent whisky. That should always be the added value of using exotic casks over regular bourbon. This one has a sour note that is really elevated by the excellent spirit of this distillery. Playing with water is recommended to utilize the full potential of this bottling. I tried this sample on the same day as the new Sherry Cask release, and must say the price-quality is better covered by the more traditional sherry expression. But that, one must say, is truly a different beast (peated, sherried) compared to this more elegant style. Truly PX versus Champagne. A good display of varieties from which you yourself can choose favorites. The Paul Launois batches I will gladly keep on following , but a whole bottle is for now not my preference. Having said that, this is a softer, sour, fizzy kind of malt, and rather unique. Perfect balance. - whiskybase.com

"Young age is noticeable, nonetheless this Ardnamurchan showcases distillery character in the best way." - whiskybase.com

Some are already comparing Ardnamurchan with Springbank, though that might be a bit premature. What is undeniable is that these whiskies carry a truckload of flavour for youngsters, that's most evident in their natural strength bottlings. This one's a blend of 87% peated and 13% unpeated spirit, primarily matured in ex-bourbon casks, the last 10% from sherry. 12,911 bottles were produced at 57.7% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews.... It's a complete success, the balance is perfect between the predominant Bourbon which highlights a more mature distillate, and the peat and Sherry which give character, depth and fruit. - whiskybase.com

Great powerful young Ardnamurchan, which only benefits from less cask influence. Bright coastal character with prominent salty and mineral notes. Young age is noticeable, nonetheless this Ardnamurchan showcases distillery character in the best way. - whiskybase.com

A little edgier in acidity and grippier than previous releases, which raises the potential for some further ageing. In saying that, the grape's preserved lemon and almond savouriness is still apparent – that's a good thing – and, so too, the zesty citrus bonanza. Lemon, grapefruit pith and green apple with savoury notes and a saline tang light up the palate. Nuff said; it's obligatory with shellfish. Drink by 2028.

The vineyard in question in the 2021 Malbec Nicasia Vineyard is nearly a century old, 3,593-feet high, and brimming in clay with limestone soils. Medium-bodied and moderately concentrated, it sees an elevage of 16-21 months in French oak, softening the tannins to a supple edginess supportive of the black fruit and earthy spice of the wine. 348 bottles from a first-fill Spanish oak Oloroso Hogshead make up this unpeated Ardna'. Drawing parallels with their annual classic finished in Paul Launois Champagne casks, there's no smoke to hide behind, so the quality of the distillate is more on show. The similarities end there. The sherry input makes this significantly heavier on the nose and thicker on the palate; Oloroso glazing the tongue before a muted coastal character blends with dried figs, bittersweet dark chocolate and gingery warmth. A touch of minerality is retained, too, as the finish dries and closes leaving mere traces of the whisky's provenance. Because it's a single cask, the presentation returns to Ardnamurchan’s original slate blue vessel - emulating the colour of the volcanic rock that surrounds their peninsula. A few hundred bottles remain for the entire Australian market, which may add further appeal for collectors. 58.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Tasted from a 30ml sample.

All the regional aromas and flavours at play, from violets, wakame, cassis and chocolate to mulberries, with a distinct ironstone character too. The fuller-bodied palate comes strewn with tannins, the texture of cocoa powder, and somewhat drying on the finish. Just needs a bit more time in bottle. Drink by 2034.

A rich, plummy Barossa Shiraz with an amply powered, well fleshed finish.

Orphan Bank is testament to Langmeil’s commitment to preserving old and rare Barossa vineyards. Ten rows of Shiraz planted pre-1860 were saved from the developer’s bulldozer and replanted alongside the original Langmeil vineyard on the banks of the North Para River. Matured for 24 months in French oak hogsheads (25% new), fruit for the Orphan Bank is sourced from a variety of Barossa sub districts with the vines having an average age of 85+ years.

A wonderful tribute to Ford Guthrie, the son of the producer who tragically died too young. Walks the finest of lines between complexity and freshness so well, so convincingly. Flows seamlessly, underscored in soft, ripe tannins and delivered long with a subtle, spicy sweetness. Classic modern Aus style. Drink by 2034.

Launched in 2013, Balvenie's Single Barrel offerings are limited editions, with no more than 300 drawn from a single cask, hand-numbered and labelled with the cask number. This release was matured in first-fill bourbon casks for at least 12 years before bottling non-chill filtered.

2014 batch tasted... Perfect clarity in the bright gold appearance. Wavers before attractive scents of apple strudel, poached pear in wine and hints of cinnamon are released. Further exposure subdues the overall intensity but accents mild fruit cake notes, dilute honey and hints of ginger biscuit. The big wood influence and higher ABV delivers more punch than you'd expect from Balvenie with honey, vanilla and barley sugar featuring in a medium to full bodied profile and showing terrific balance through to the vibrant, spicy, subtle charry oak / wafer biscuit fade. Like the superb peated release tasted earlier, this marks a departure from the house style, taking a more heavy handed approach to what is generally a delicate spirit. It will find favour amongst those who generally prefer the bolder Speyside malts, like Benromach or Glenfarclas. Great value while this price holds.47.8% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... I believe these are all first fill. I doubt different casks will be very different, it's probably all under control. Colour: white wine. Nose: fresh and citric at first, chalky and lemony, with touches of fresh oak (not totally dry) and just cut grass. A little iron too. It's very tight, with growing notes of paraffin and fresh cement, then green apples and a wee menthol/camphor combination. Refreshing altogether. Mouth: really very good. Lemon sherbet, tight grasses, the greenest green apples and the greenest limes, then perhaps mirabelles and damsons, but it'll never get as mellow and rounded as some other casks that I had tried earlier. Finish: long and sweeter, more on jellybeans, then just a lot of grass. Perhaps a little too much sourness in the aftertaste, sour fruits… Comments: it's remarkable that it never got vanilla-driven given that this was first fill. 85 points - whiskyfun.com

An aromatic Scotch with bright honey, pear and floral touches, this single-barrel offering features creamy custard, banana and a touch of cocoa before finishing on a baking spice note. The alcohol presence is considerable; temper it with a good dose of water and consider pairing it with a rich dessert. 91 points (12/1/2013) - wineenthusiast.com

This is the estate’s Reserve Riesling crafted from dry grown old vines (80+ years old). 2025 was one of the driest, warmest, and earliest vintages that the Clare Valley has ever seen resulting in low yields but exceptional fruit quality.

Tense and zippy with an electrifying line of acidity sculpting the long driving finish.

Brilliant water like core with a greenish tinge to the edges. Intensely scented, the nose offers up lime juice and lemon aromas which are complimented by green apple, chalky talc and slatey mineral like notes. Racy lime, lemon and Granny Smith apple fruits are sculptured by a line of electrifying acidity. Chalky talc, wet steel and flinty mineral elements extend across the back half. Superb drive finishing long, tense and zippy.

Another superb Clare Valley Riesling from the Watervale sub-region, the fruit comes from a dry grown vineyard with vines in excess of eighty years of age. 100% free run juice. This is exceptional value. The very gentlest pale lemon colour, the wine offers a gorgeous nose, wonderfully aromatic, with lime blossoms, spices, white jasmine, river stones, florals and a line of minerally support. Beautifully crafted with excellent length, there is bright, zesty acidity running the full length. Finely balanced, the wine will provide pleasure for at least the next fifteen years. Drink 2026-2041.

    Ken Gargett – WinePilot.com

The wine exhibits precision and excellent clarity, presenting aromas of crisp apple, green rockmelon, lime zest, and lemon pith, complemented by a hint of floral notes. On the palate, it is brilliantly focused, showing outstanding fruit purity and balance, and is beautifully structured, with a complex mouthfeel and delicate texture. The finish is taut and linear, demonstrating superb composition and refinement, and is impressively long. At its best: 2029 to 2042.

A good deal of intensity and concentration of flavour here. Carries the lemon-lime Splice characters well, shows off some pulpy grapefruit notes, hazy green apple juice, a touch of pickled ginger and some lifted alpine herb and citrus blossom characters. Well balanced, energetic and drives with intent and length. Drink by 2033.

2024 Sailor Seeks Horse Chardonnay Huldufolk

    $1440.00 Dozen

Sailor Seeks Horse is a tiny vineyard that's one of Australia’s most southerly, located in the Huon valley in southern Tasmania. Owners Paul and Gilli Lipscombe have brought considerable vineyard and winemaking experience to this venture, and they've been producing outstanding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay here for over a decade.

The Huldufolk label is reserved for exceptional parcels of Chardonnay and/or Pinot Noir, and the name means ‘hidden people’ in Icelandic having has its origins in 19th century folklore. 2024 Huldufolk Chardonnay is predominantly 96 clone with a touch of 277.

    Other Reviews....
The 2024 Huldofólk Chardonnay features Clones 96 (in majority) and 277, and the wine is nuttier and more savory than the estate Chardonnay tasted alongside. The wine here is mineral and bright on the palate; it has real chew and shape and lingers long after the close of play. The label here is quite different from the estate label: this features a colored painting, so it's easy to differentiate. The fruit is grown in the estate vineyard in Huon Valley, but it's a clonal selection from the middle of the vineyard. Clone 277 contributes salinity, line and length, while the 95 is the richness and texture (wild ferment, full solids in barrel). 13.2% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2026-2036.
