2019 Domaine Clos Rougeard Saumur-Champigny Le Bourg
    Saumur, Loire Valley, FRANCE
    $799. 00
    Bottle
    $9588.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13%
    Closure: Cork

    Other Reviews....
There's something of northern Rhône Syrah on the nose of the 2019 Le Bourg with its smoked meats and ripe red fruit plus a hint of menthol. There's always a succulence to this cuvée, showing completeness–everything is in its place. Excellent concentration of fruit from a frost-affected crop. Low yields and small berries also created plentiful of tannins that display a chalky sinew. Dry, long, scented finish with festive spice, smoked notes that come from the barrel. Drink 2026-2042.

    Other Reviews....
The nose of the 2019 Brézé is richly fruited and creamy, showing tropical pineapple characters and giving the impression of opulence. It is concentrated and powerful with real intensity of flavor. Well-judged oak use lends a smoky, spice note while acidity and salinity pull it all together. This is dry Chenin Blanc at its best—ripe, powerful and fresh. Drink 2025-2039.

    Furneaux Distillery Untamed Gin (700ml)
    Tasmania, AUSTRALIA
    $84. 99
    Bottle
    $1019.88 Dozen
    ABV: 42%

Ingredients include flowering kunzea, native rosemary, wild fennel and traditional gin botanicals. Creamy nose feel, suggests elderflower, citrus oils and juniper over early-root-like notes, lifted by white pepper and cardamom. Rounded, soft texture; impressive body with medium-dry flavours laced with pepper, citrus and herbal character. Finish sees a subtle anise freshness alongside juniper. Ends spicy, cleansing, minerally and wonderfully dry. Offers something different in a crowded category while remaining distinctively ‘ginny’ - which is no mean feat. 42% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... An excellent, well-considered use of botanicals, this gin presents cohesion between the aroma and palate. The somewhat restrained ABV is well-integrated and pleasant, allowing each flavour's nuance to be showcased and come through. This gin has two schools of flavour: the coastal, summer sea breeze quality and a warmer baked citrus quality. Both work in tandem to build an interesting, engaging and versatile spirit. These elements are not always harmonious. However, the heavier use of anise forward botanicals is a guiding flavour to effortlessly envelope and create a thoughtful & polished spirit. 94 points - Jess Clayfield, winecompanion.com.au

Furneaux Distillery Flinders Island Peated Single Malt Australian Whisky (700ml)
    Tasmania, AUSTRALIA
    $220. 00
    Bottle
    $2640.00 Dozen
    ABV: 48.2%

The beefiest whisky in the Furneaux line up opens with a nice co-mingling of sherry and malt on the nose. The peat is beautifully handled, of the cured meats and wood-smoke variety, executing a full-bodied dram that rolls about the mouth, barely suggesting the ABV; Sleek and sooty to finish, all so well controlled with the oily peat, light peppers and sweet barley extending the profile. Effortless and polished. Ardmore meets Caol Ila meets a new Tassie star. You can’t help but be impressed. 48.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Made with Tasmanian barley smoked post-malting with Flinders Island peat, the nose on this whisky is fascinating - almost like smoked chocolate - and like nothing I've ever smelled in a whisky before. Truly unique in a way that's rare in the world of whisky. Grassy and earthy aromas like freshly cut green capsicum are almost reminiscent of mezcal but without the underripe or volatile notes of a whisky bottled too young. There's enough oak and smoke here to round it out, along with lovely notes of maple syrup sweetness and orange zest, and the integration of oak and spirit is impressive. It's rare to have a smokey whisky that still smells so fresh, so that's ... refreshing. Powerful alcohol on the front palate dissipates quickly to a lovely roasted and candied macadamia nuttiness, and again the integration is impressive with a surprisingly easy, sweet finish. It could use more oiliness and texture to match the alcohol - it isn't a drink for those afraid of a little heat - but on the other hand, it's very drinkable for a whisky with so much power. Incredibly impressive for such a young distillery. Are there peated Scotch whiskies on the market that are better priced for similar quality? Yes. But this is a truly unique whisky made in a truly unique place without the backing of multinational corporations, and that's worth paying for. 96 points - Fred Siggins, winecompanion.com.au

Furneaux Distillery Sawyers Bay Single Malt Australian Whisky (700ml)
    Tasmania, AUSTRALIA
    $199. 99
    Bottle
    $2399.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46.6%

Probably intended as an after-dinner dram: Plump, but not confected, the port influence brings body to the bouquet with hints of dried cranberry; Same on the palate, the wine filling out the malt with a layer of richness. Poise is carefully considered - no excessive sugars here, just a lovely soft, fruity-malt vibe with a flurry of spices and fine tannins carrying the aftertaste - and despite the high ABV, this is (arguably) the most accessible of the current Furneaux lineup. 49.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... This well-balanced single malt displays a lovely soft nose of fudgy, Christmas pudding, Aussie Apera and a delicacy that belies its youth. Maybe it's wishful imagination, but there's a note of coastal grass and rain on rocks that speaks to the island home, along with powerful notes of ripe fruits, melon and red apple in particular, a hallmark of good Aussie single malt in the same way it's a hallmark of good Aussie pale ale. This whisky has a lot in common with other Tassie whiskies, so it is very recognisable for its region, but with no rough edges hiding under the oak - an unfortunately common problem on the Apple Isle - which shows a deft hand in the stillhouse and a careful nose in the blending room. The palate is light and approachable, with a fresh apple and mild tannin on the finish, giving this whisky the gravitas that the lovely nose deserves. While lacking the complexity or texture to be truly exceptional, it's a prime example of what makes Aussie whisky great and something I'd be proud to show off to anyone in the world. At $200 a pop, it's not cheap, but given the genuine craft approach taken here, the price is justified. If this is the quality they're producing this early in the game, there are very good things ahead for Furneaux. 94 points - Fred Siggins, winecompanion.com.au

    Renais Gin (700ml)
    UNITED KINGDOM
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Short for 'Renaissance', Renais is the brainchild of Emma Watson, of Harry Potter fame, together with her brother James who works in the drinks industry. It begins with the grape skins left after pressing from their father's vineyard in Chablis. These, along with lees from the wine are distilled to produce a base spirit which is blended with "Kimmeridgian stone distillate", produced from an infusion of rocks from northern Burgundy. Add the necessary botanicals and you have a fresh, dry, juniper-led style. Tasters have also noted a distinctive minerality, typical of the Chablis region's wines. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Renais is a luxury gin brand in the UK that’s so fancy they released a limited edition bottle featuring artwork from Emma Watson. On a recent trip to London the brand was kind enough to send me a sample of the gin — in the boring old normal person bottle, mind you — which I dutifully carted back to the U.S. for review. As far as I can tell it isn’t available on our shores. Renais is made as an homage to Burgundy in France, distilled from salvaged Grand Cru grape skins collected after being pressed to make wine. Botanicals include (but may not be limited to) juniper, grains of paradise, linden flowers, and acacia honey. Golden yellow in color, the gin has the appearance of a cocktail that’s ready to drink, but the nose is classic London dry — heavy, biting juniper with a sultry angelica earthiness underneath. It’s very peppery with mild notes of anise and less distinct florals, largely dried, to wind things up. On the palate, the gin is a powerhouse. Fans of modern, more gossamer gins will laugh in the face of Renais. Powerful notes of juniper, rosemary, and thyme give the gin an immediate punch of green herbs, as piney as a walk amongst the evergreens can be. The drinker is in for some surprises, however, as a brisk citrus quality soon becomes clear, followed by a growing, insistent sweetness. The acacia honey in the mix is no joke, providing a soothing backbone against which the aggressive herbal notes can find some rest. The finish is lightly sweet and tinged with florals again, making for a spirit that is delightful on its own but also a natural companion with tonic. - drinkhacker.com

Gelston's 26 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Irish Whiskey (700ml)
    IRELAND
    $799. 00
    Bottle
    $9588.00 Dozen
    ABV: 54.2%

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product pictured.

As far as we can tell Gelstons is independently owned but they source all their whiskey from Bushmills. Frank McHardy of Springbank fame was the head distiller of Bushmills during this time. So probably no coincidence the stuff is very good. General consensus is that it's an "Irish fruit bomb". 54.2% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Nose: whoua! A basket of exotic fruits, the nose is sublime. A mixture of watermelon, pineapple, mango, passion fruit, enhanced by a little toasted or even roasted malt. A superb multi vitamin! :-) Palate: freshness ...... fruit juice ...... I expected something less linear. Final: a finish on the passion fruit, mango, moderately short. Comments: the alcohol is perfectly integrated. A very good fruit juice flavored with whisky is not bad. Even if this juice is perfect, I expected more panache. - whiskybase.com

    ABV: 46.7%

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product pictured.

A European exclusive that appears to have the same specs as an official release, also finished in Cognac casks (review below). Bottled in 2020, making it 28 years old. 46.7% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Notes from a similar bottling... The cognac-cask finish finesses the intensity and concentration of the lush fruity character of this whisky. A complex interplay of peach, apricot, apple, pineapple, lemon zest, thick-cut marmalade, oak, faint spices, and dried fruit on the nose. A thick velvety mouthfeel of sweet orange, grapefruit, and lime sweeps to a climax of peppercorn and clove, then it abates with dried apricot, papaya, and marzipan-wrapped Battenberg cake. Isle of Jura 30 Year Old Camas An Staca Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Isle of Jura, SCOTLAND
    $999. 00

    $11988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 44%

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product shown.

'Standing Stone', or ‘Camas an Staca’ in Gaelic, takes its name from the largest of Jura’s eight standing stones. Known as ‘The Bay of the Protecting Rocks’, this imposing 12 foot obelisk is reputedly all that remains of a stone circle laid some 3,000 years ago by the earliest Diurachs to appease the spirits. The iconic Jura bottle is presented in a beautiful display case that opens its doors to reveal the story of the whisky. Meticulously detailed, the bottle is in-filled with copper wax with a matching metal plaque. 44% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The latest addition to the Jura range has been matured in American white oak casks before spending three years in Gonzalez Byass oloroso sherry butts. The mellow nose is lightly oily, with figs, sherry, orange, and a savory note. Vanilla emerges, along with malt, and finally a hint of cinnamon and parma violets. Soft and supple on the palate, with more orange, plus cocoa, sultanas, and dates. The finish is lengthy and features dark chocolate, raisins, aniseed, and subtle spices. 89 points - whiskyadvocate.com

This baby was finished in Oloroso sherry casks from Gonzalez Byass'. The funny name means standing stone. Colour: apricoty, almost pink. Nose: starts on frankly vinous notes, its not that it’s unpleasant, it’s just a little excessive. The good news is that all that would just go away after a few seconds, leaving more room for a complex range of citrus fruits, both dried and fresh. Oranges are very obvious, then rather citrons. Touches of baklavas, orange blossom, pomegranates, then more cigars, raisins, chocolate and just a little leather as well as a few floral notes, mainly peonies. All that is rather smooth and easy-going, although more mineral notes do rise after a few minutes. Graphite oil? Mouth: excellent attack, quite old style, with a fruitiness that reminds me of both old Bowmores and Benriach, although this one is soon to become a little drier and slightly chalky. Also a little chlorophyll and this leather from the sherry. Walnuts. Touches of salt. Finish: medium long, even drier now, the fruits have almost vanished and it all gets quite tea-ish and cigary. Cinnamon and nutmeg in the aftertaste as well as a little smoke. Fino sherry or vin jaune. Comments: very high quality but I feel the dry sherry is sometimes overwhelming ‘in the background’, with its, well, dryness. Otherwise it would have been 90+ material. 87 points - whiskyfun.com

Furneaux Distillery Smoky Wedding Peated Single Malt Australian Whisky (700ml)
    Tasmania, AUSTRALIA
    $220. 00
    Bottle
    $2640.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46.5%

Just a few degrees lower in alcohol makes this feel considerably lighter compared to the Peated Double Oak; Easy-going without lacking depth, here Furneaux’s distillate is a little closer to centre stage, the malt glazed with a lovely oily texture from the peat. Some maritime character adds interest, with active x-Bourbon wood in support. Match it against any 12 year old Scotch. Remarkably good at such a young age. 46.5% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Notes from the producers... A combination of Flinders Island coastal peated malt and Scottish peated malt makes up the mash bill in this inimitable whisky. Matured in ex Heaven Hill and Makers Mark Bourbon casks. Salty caramel and cacao on the nose with soft citrus. Peat and sweetness pops on the front palate like a smoky candy pearl. Rich and balanced with great texture, the Scottish peat influence bring a chewy, iodine sweetness, while our Flinders peat lengthens the finish with a soft earthy aromatic smoke.

Daylesford Spirit Miner's Navy Strength Australian Gin (700ml)
    Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $97. 99
    Bottle
    $1175.88 Dozen
    ABV: 58%

The nose shows early evidence of drier styled juniper and an appealing earthy/stony mineral quality accompanied by rosemary and white pepper heat; later inhalations are herbal-fresh, deepening and intensifying with citrus oils and crushed pine buds. Entry is creamy, deceptively soft; mid-palate flavours build with an oily texture and a slow crescendo that sees the earthy-root elements take flight alongside bursts of pepper, fresh grapefruit, orange zest and sustained juniper. Fades cleansing, long, earthy and complex. 58% Alc./vol.

Notes from the producers... A unique representation of the flavours that the Daylesford region provides - a vibrant gin, opening with a gentle herbal bouquet and introducing grassy-leafy spiciness upfront. Infused with marmalade, citrus, and juniper notes, the palate unfolds with a harmonious blend of sweet and savoury spices, with citrus essence lingering gracefully through the finish.

A travel retail release that debuted in 2016, joining the 18 year old and a host of re-branded age statements. Readers should note, two different Aberfeldy 28 year olds were offered. The distillery released the 'Gold of Pitilie 28 year old’ (named after their Pitilie Burn water source). Only eight bottles of this 1985 vintage were produced, adorned with 22 and 24 carat gold leaf and priced at around AU$5K each. We have the ‘standard’ 40% ABV edition.

Other reviews... Surprisingly viscous for 40% ABV (though still could have a wee bit more oomph for my liking) and delivering a rich and creamy arrival which emphasises both sweetness and wood. Toffee and fudge are joined by ripe apples, poached pears and a heavy dose of old wood in the form of leather bound books, furniture polish and tobacco... a lovely drinking experience – it’s the type of whisky that’s both indulgent and refined, but also easy to get along with. Great balance of sweetness and bitterness with an old wood profile that still allows the more fruity underpinning flavours to shine through. Very tasty stuff indeed. Alas, the price of this one has completely skyrocketed. - thedramble.com

The Estate consists of 33 hectares of vines planted on the prized Coonawarra Terra Rosa soils. Established in 1972, the first vintage in 1975 was greeted with considerable enthusiasm.

From a very well-known family owned estate with an Italian-Australian heritage, this McLaren Vale winery burst onto the scene in the early 2000’s when the then, world's most powerful wine critic, Robert Parker, lauded many of the wines with scores in the high nineties.
This, their flagship Cabernet Sauvignon, is made in the traditional Amarone style whereby the grapes are dried to concentrate the aromas and flavours, as well as soften the tannins.

A powerhouse Cabernet made in the traditional Amarone style.

Totally opaque black dark red colour with a very dark brick red hue. Wafting out of the glass is a complex array of morello cherry, black cherry, liquorice, cassis and black plum scents which are trailed by some vanillin cedar, cinnamon and spicy tobacco notes. Rich, concentrated and voluptuous in its feel across the thick, weighty palate are all engulfing morello cherry, blackcurrant, black cherry, liquorice and black plum fruits. Vanillin cedar, earth, sweet tobacco and spicy cinnamon elements lie beneath. Initially silky tannins firm up on the back half, providing admirable structure. Boasting outstanding power and depth, the long, plush yet sturdy conclusion is delivered with plenty of sophistication.

You’d think they were crazy making an Amarone style from cabernet sauvignon. Amarone is one of Italy’s greatest wines made from dried grapes which concentrate the flavours and tannins to create long lived wines. But with cabernet sauvignon – a wine that is already loaded with tannins – this is surely a disaster in the making, but apparently not….
This is a gorgeous wine, and my pick of the current new releases, which packs a serious punch. The colour is deep suggesting a big dense style but the wine is surprisingly light on its feet. Sweet, pure and vibrant blackcurrant fruits are tempered by dried herbs with some sweeter blackberry underneath. Oak is there too but sits in the background. This then leads to a bold and explosive palate full of power and energy – fruit pastille flavours are supported by fine acidity that is all underpinned by significant but well handled tannins. It is soooooo long too with the fruit concentration holding that flavour for minutes. A delicious wine stacked full of personality that is hard to put down. Drink 2023-2032.

The 2019 ******* Cabernet Sauvignon is made from partially dried grapes. After being air-dried for approximately nine weeks and losing approximately 30% of their weight, the grapes are pressed. The resulting wine is a potent, cassis and herb-laced offering with hints of dark chocolate and caramel yet never heavy or overdone. Full-bodied, rich and possessing a layered texture and a lingering finish, it's a terrific example of *******, with at least a decade of cellaring potential. Drink 2021-2030.

The wine shows stunning fruit purity as well as seductive complexity with cassis, sweet plum, tobacco and spicy oak characters. It’s impressively concentrated and persistent, displaying awesome power brilliantly structured by loads of fine tannins. Multi-layered and graceful. At its best: 2024 to 2039.

An exceptionally powerful Sangiovese with energetic red fruit sculptured by chiselled tannins and lively acidity.

In the 1950s, the father of current winemaker Paolo de Marchi purchased the adjoining hamlets of Isole and Olena and their estates in the Tuscan commune of Barberino Val d'Elsa. Paolo entered the business in 1976 and the quality of the estate’s wines improved rapidly after decades of sharecropping. Paolo de Marchi is one of the region's kings of the Sangiovese grape and at a time when Chianti was a blended wine it was, he that stepped out to produce wines that were 100% Sangiovese. Cepparello is the true embodiment of a ‘Super Tuscan’ wine and one of Italy's most iconic wines.

Deep dark red black in colour with a dark red hue. The aromatically gorgeous nose is blessed with a kaleidoscope of red to dark currant, dark cherry, red liquorice and violet scents. Dried herb, subtle tobacco, earth and spice notes lend further nuance. Delicious, energetic red to dark cherry, red currant and red liquorice fruits are sculptured by chiselled tannins and lively acidity. Exceptionally powerful, it has a tense, muscular feel with the back half complexed by notions of dried herbs, tobacco, earth and spice. Finishes fresh and slightly grippy with outstanding length.
    Cellar 8-10 years.

Intense and floral wine, full of restrained aromas, such as potpourri, together with vibrant red cherries, licorice, bergamot and lightly balsamic depth. The firm tannins and full body provide a velvety and extracted texture. Powerful wine, yet tight-knit and super polished. Refreshing with a tense, fruity finish. Super classic. Drink or hold.

One of Tuscany's flagship wines, the Isole e Olena 2021 Cepparello immediately delivers ripe fruit flavors that are firm, even crunchy, and that bodes well for the future evolution of this classic vintage. The wine is packed with tart fruit flavors followed by balanced acidity. Compared to past vintages that are more extracted and dense, this edition is delightfully bright and transparent. I appreciation the age-worthy direction Cepparello is taking. Drink 2025-2048.

Monica Larner – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

Plum, cherry and pomegranate fruit is framed by toasty oak and mineral flavors in this lively and succulent red, which offers plenty of energy, with elements of tar and oak on the persistent finish. Shows fine balance, with the dense tannins leaving room for the fruit in the end. Needs time. Sangiovese. Best from 2027 through 2043.

Mid weighted with ample richness, a sturdy structure and elegant conclusion.

The founder, the highly inventive, industrious and resourceful Frank Potts (1815 - 1890), to whom this wine is dedicated, was a 19th century genius, and a pioneer who has been described as being “made of the right stuff and well worthy of the grand old land that gave him birth.” He arrived in Australia as a 21 year old, having set sail from Plymouth England, and landing late in 1836. By the 1860’s, he had planted the original 30 acres of vineyard on the banks of the Bremmer Creek. Potts was highly admired - “One meets with extraordinary characters through life, but I doubt whether his equal could be found. In appearance a stranger would take him to be a poor labourer, with a thin, spare figure and long unkempt hair and invariably wearing his shirt sleeves tucked up. Although a most uncouth-looking person, and yet this man is a perfect genius! There is not a single thing mechanical or otherwise undertaken by him which he does not succeed in...” So remarked Inspector Tolmer, who was later to become Commissioner of Police, South Australia. Frank was one of the first to recognise the benefits of red gum. After building several houses for himself, he made tools and a bullock dray to cut down and haul these massive timbers in order to construct a gigantic twin wine press and several enormous wine vats. He also created the irrigation system that's still in place today. What little spare time he might have had was spent building a piano and various race winning yachts!

A blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Malbec, 6% Petit Verdot and 4% Merlot with maturation taking place in French oak puncheons and hogsheads (25% new) for a period of 12 months. Pitch black heart with a dark red black tinged hue. Pronounced red currant, red liquorice and red plum aromas intermix with hints of mulberry, dusty vanillin cedar, subtle tobacco and bay leaf. Flowing across the mid weighted palate with ample richness are red currant, red liquorice and mulberry fruits complimented by dusty earth, vanillin cedar, spicy tobacco and infusions of bay leaf. Slightly chalky, fine grained tannins lend a sturdy structure. Long elegant conclusion.

If someone said to me, pick a Henschke wine to drink tonight, any wine. Well, one would be a blithering idiot not to opt for Hill of Grace, but I would not be at all unhappy if this was the choice. It is, year after year, always a favourite among some exceptional wines. 100% Shiraz from 70-year-old vines, 68% Eden Valley and 32% Barossa. Maturation was for twenty months in French oak hogsheads, 10% new. From a top vintage, this will surely rank among the very best Tappa Pass that the Henschkes have released – and that is saying something! A vibrant maroon hue, the nose suggests a complete wine, utterly harmonious. There is focus, a seductive and seamless structure, an alluring and beguiling texture, impeccable balance and immense length. At the conclusion, there are silky tannins, though they seem to almost disappear on contact. Notes of cassis emerge on the palate. A wine with real persistence, this has twenty years ahead of it, if needed. Stunning. Drink 2025-2045.

The brilliant burst of colour is the first indication that this is something special. The nose doesn’t disappoint. Highly perfumed with floral plum and cherry notes and a little light chocolate. Graceful lines on the palate, which is expressive and powerful, though the influence of Eden Valley adds a lightness of touch. Only 10% new French oak and the rest seasoned, but that little oak influence brings a delightful lift to the palate. Outstanding wine.

Ripe satsuma plum, black cherry and blackberry fruits with hints of black olive tapenade, bay leaf, five-spice, cedar, vanilla pod, licorice, dark chocolate, earth and pan juices. I'm really liking the fruit density and velvety palate travel of the '22s; there is a real generosity to the fruit. Tight, powdered schisty tannins and a bright seam of acidity with excellent persistence on the finish. Drink by 2038.

One of Yalumba’s distinguished site wines, the Paradox is sourced from the Northern Barossa and is made with an emphasis on velvet like texture and the use of less new oak than many of its counterparts. Maturation taking place in French oak puncheons, with only 8% new oak employed, for a period of 17 months.

Rich, expansive and enveloping, this marries Barossa opulence with a gorgeously refined finish.

Magnificent colour featuring a super saturated inky black core and a deep black dark red hue. Seducing the olfactory senses are captivating blackberry, liquorice and dark plum aromas which interact with delicately smoked vanillin cedar, fennel, dark chocolate and peppered earth notes. Rich, silky and concentrated across the full bodied yet perfectly proportioned palate is a sumptuous flow of blackberry, liquorice and dark plum fruits. Undertones of spicy vanillin cedar, subtle scorched earth, dark chocolate and peppered fennel lend further interest. Boasting fantastic power and depth yet not heavy handed in it’s feel, it has velvet smooth tannins and a long, opulent yet gorgeously refined finish.

Medium bodied with juicy black fruits, slightly chewy tannins and a savoury finish.

A blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah. Deep dark red black tinged core with a dark red hue. Emanating out of the glass are dark raspberry and cherry aromas infused with herbs du Provence. Some liquorice and peppered earth notes are also evident. Juicy black raspberry and liquiorice fruits carry medium body weight over a scorched earth and peppered dried herb background. Slightly chewy tannins with a savoury mid length conclusion.

Cracking value for a full flavoured French red from the Rhône Valley, this is 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah. The colour is that of a dark, bruised plum. Aromas swirl through smoked meats, dark berries, warm earth, plums, soy, cloves and leather. The wine has freshness, focus and good persistence with fine tannins. Enjoy it over the next four to five years. Cracking value. Drink 2024-2029.

Tense and focused with a long, zippy finish.

Brilliant water like core with flashes of green around the edges. Pronounced lime juice and Granny Smith apple scents jump out of the glass followed by some lemon and chalky mineral like notes. Zesty lime, lemon and Granny Smith apple fruits are underscored by crisp, laser like acidity. Wet steel and chalky mineral elements lie underneath. Tense and focused it finishes long and zippy.

A fragrant and pure riesling sourced from a single vineyard in Flaxman Valley, high up in the Eden Valley. Pale with a flash of green and aromas of Bickford's lime cordial, freshly squeezed lime and grapefruit with hints of Christmas lily, lime sorbet, crushed quartz, lemongrass, grapefruit zest and frangipani. Lightly textured, but it's really all about that tubular core of lime and the mineral propulsion system. Tension, precision and velocity writ large. Drink by 2040.

A classic Eden Valley Riesling, from a great year, and in particular, the Flaxman Valley sub-region. A very pale lemon hue, this is a brilliant follow-up to the initial release last year – at least as good, probably better. This in your cellar for the next decade or two will make you think you are wise indeed. And you would be correct. Wonderful aromatics, with notes of florals, lemon curd, limes and a supporting line of sea breeze acidity. The wine has balance, intensity and finesse. A wonderful Riesling, with serious length and a fifteen years plus ahead of it. A star, and there is room here for this to elevate its score in the coming years. Drink 2025-2040+

Rich, opulent fruit pitted against heavily charred oak.

Dense inky black heart with a deep dark red black hue. Potent ripe black cherry, blackberry and liquorice aromas are pitted against prominent toasty oak and peppered earth notes. Rich, thick and concentrated, the opulent palate is powered by lavish blackberry, liquorice and ripe black cherry fruits. Toasty vanillin oak then moves in overwhelming the back half. Some scorched earth and pepper elements also chime in. Velvety yet underlyingly sturdy tannins with a lingering charry oak and peppered earth aftertaste.

    A juicy quaffing Pinot.

Red to dark red core with black toned edges and a bright red hue. Aromas of dark cherry, strawberry and more subtle anise are trailed by some dried herb, earth and spicy cedar notes. Juicy dark cherry and strawberry fruits are delivered with impressive intensity over a background of anise, earth and subtlety toasted cedar. Polished tannins with a long fruit driven finish that’s quite moreish.

West Aussie Pinot has grown from a curiosity to a serious example of this great grape, which offers value, flavour and great drinkability. Denmark has established itself at the forefront of this movement. A garnet/pale crimson hue, this is quite a savoury style of Pinot and a most welcome one. We have notes of leather, undergrowth, mushrooms, red cherries and a touch of nutmeg oak. On the palate, we move more to the red cherry end of the spectrum. This is well crafted and neatly balanced, with good acidity and impressive length. Enjoy for the next six years. Drink 2025-2031.

The 2020 vintage of Soldera marks the second release overseen entirely by the Soldera family since the passing of Gianfranco Soldera, and it continues the estate’s unwavering commitment to purity, biodiversity, and meticulous detail. Sourced from the iconic Case Basse estate, ten hectares of southwest-facing Sangiovese in the heart of Montalcino, the wine reflects both the singular character of the site and the estate’s distinctive, non-interventionist approach. Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, long maceration in Slavonian oak, and nearly four years of aging in large botti are all part of what gives Soldera its signature depth, energy, and transparency. No longer labeled Brunello, but every bit the benchmark.

    Other Reviews....
Tasted from a 65-hectoliter cask, the 2020 Sangiovese is plush and fruity at this stage, although it’s starting to reveal its mineral underpinnings, with dark blackberry notes, graphite, and violets. Medium to full-bodied, it offers a velvety texture, with ripe and refined tannins, a good deal of meaty richness through the mid-palate, and a seamless structure. There’s both purity and refinement across each of the samples tasted. The 2020 showed a good deal of completeness already prior to bottling and I expect it will have a good deal of cellaring potential.
