*** do a great job with their *** , a blend of grenache, cinsault and mataro, this year 46/39/15%. As the name suggests, it's built for 'drinkin, not thinkin', with a vibrant hue, bouncy, lifted aromatic profile and an airy flow of red fruits, spice, amaro and floral tones on the palate. I'd label this 'chill-safe' if the weather dictates such terms; it's great, light drinking. Drink by 2029.

Dave Brookes – James Halliday’s Australian Wine CompanionA blend of Grenache, Cinsault and Mataro from the Barossa providing a cute spin on the traditional blend. Lifted notes of florals with a slightly earthy rose petal character dominant. The medium bodied palate has such beautiful mouthfeel with a smooth seamlessly integrated oak and tannin combination. The sweet fruit is balanced with a slightly minerally savouriness to complete a terrific little wine. Drink 2024-2032.

2022 Alheit Vineyards Hereafter Here Chenin BlancStellenbosch, SOUTH AFRICA$59. 99Bottle$719.88 DozenABV: 13%Closure: CorkHereafter Here (intentionally similar sounding to year after year, denoting the passage of time) is based on two young vine blocks in Stellenbosch. The main contributor is the Baby Duck vineyard, planted on granite soils on a gentle southern slope in the Polkadraai Hills ward, while the second vineyard is planted in the Upper Blaauwklippen Valley on deep red soil.
The grapes were hand sorted and whole bunch pressed. The resulting juice was very lightly settled with no additions and wild fermented in old barrels of various sizes. After fermentation, the wine was kept on lees for around twelve months, then rested in tank on fine lees without fining for a further six months prior to bottling.
Other Reviews....
Mostly a young vineyard Chenin Blanc, grapes from Swartland, Upper Blaauwklippen and Polkadraai Hills plus some older vine parcels from the Paardeberg. Some flinty reduction before pear, peach and citrus as well as some floral perfume on the nose. Good fruit density, well coated acidity and some light grip to the finish. Relatively thick textured (alc: 13.34%) with layers of flavour.

Christian Eedes - Winemag.co.zaThe 2022 Hereafter Here is a mixture of young and old vines due to the higher yields this year, whole bunch pressed with 18 months élevage, two-thirds on the lees. The well-defined bouquet has yellow plum, orange blossom, Japanese yuzu and crushed stone aromas. The palate is very harmonious, with a crisp line of acidity. A linear, almost Zen-like razor-sharp Chenin displaying wonderful nerve on the finish. Superb. Drink 2024 - 2034.

2022 Alheit Vineyards Cartology Chenin Blanc SemillonWestern Cape, SOUTH AFRICA$84. 99Bottle$1019.88 DozenABV: 13%Closure: CorkCartology means the study of maps or charts and the wine itself can be seen as a vinous map or tapestry of the Cape. It’s intended to be a picture of the Cape seen through the lens of her old vineyards in a given vintage. The cuveé is composed of parcels of mature dryland bushvines of heritage grapes, namely Chenin Blanc (93%) and Sémillon (7%). The Chenin comes from parcels in the Skurfberg, Perdeberg, Upper Blaauwklippen, False Bay and Tygerberg. The Sémillon comes from the old La Colline block in Franschhoek.
The grapes were hand sorted and whole bunch pressed. The resulting juice was very lightly settled with no additions and wild fermented in either cements eggs, clay pots, foudres or old barrels of various sizes. After fermentation the wine was kept on lees for around twelve months, then rested in tank on fine lees without fining for a further six months prior to bottling.
Other Reviews....
92% Chenin Blanc and 8% Semillon sourced from across the Western Cape – total production: 27 000 bottles and 240 magnums. Inviting aromatics of pear, peach, citrus, white flowers, thatch and fynbos while the palate shows great purity of fruit, driving acidity and a pithy finish. Poised and linear, the finish wonderfully long.

Christian Eedes - Winemag.co.zaThe 2022 Cartology is whole bunch pressed with no sulfur added until mid-winter with five months in tank on the fine lees. It has a very pure bouquet with yellow plum, egg whites and candle wax. This unfolds beautifully in the glass. The palate is well-balanced with a lively opening, citrus-fresh with orange rind and lime. Alheit mentioned how difficult it was to obtain the acidity, but I think he achieved it here. Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (700ml)Kentucky, UNITED STATES$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 47%Heaven Hill's latest innovation, Toasted Barrel is created using the brand's base model, Elijah Craig Small Batch as a starting point. Derived from a 78% Corn, 12% Malted Barley and 10% Rye mash bill, the whiskey gets its sweet, unique taste from a finishing process that's rarely encountered in American distilling. The company explains, "The process begins with fully matured Small Batch, which is dumped and then re-entered at barrel proof into a second, custom toasted new oak barrel designed in partnership with Independent Stave Company. Made with 18-month air dried oak, the finishing barrel is first toasted and then flash-charred using a moderate toast temperature and toast time. An extensive research and development process resulted in a final barrel toast profile bringing forward dark sugar flavors within the wood to create a balance of smokiness and sweetness after months of finishing.” The end product tastes quite different to the distillery's core lines. 47% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Initially reticent on the nose, with time this reveals gooey caramel, pralines, Hershey's milk chocolate, and a touch of charred mint leaves. It's chewy and occasionally sharp on the palate, with oodles of roasted nuts, polished oak, mint, peppery spice, dark chocolate, licorice, tobacco ash, and char. The medium-length finish holds tingling white pepper, unsweetened chocolate, and more polished oak. 88 points - whiskyadvocate.com
...Elijah Craig’s finishing process results in a sweeter, spicier, and admittedly more tannic end product than Michter’s and the Brown-Forman products. Importantly, this finishing process maintains the “straight bourbon” class and type designation, as new charred barrels are used for both the original aging and secondary finishing process (though they are so lightly charred they are referred to as “toasted”)....With Small Batch Elijah Craig typically having an age of 9 years or more, adding secondary aging in a new toasted oak barrel is no small feat. Moreover, this not-so-common technique adds a layer of dimension to the base bourbon. So while it's certainly premium price territory, it’s in line with other major brands that have gone through the additional work required to rebarrel a bourbon in a second new barrel. - breakingbourbon.com

Edradour Dougie MacLean's Caledonia Selection 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - DAMAGED GIFT BOXHighlands, SCOTLANDReduced from $149.99$114. 99Bottle$1379.88 DozenABV: 46%"...rather rich but unexpectedly refreshing for Edradour. One of the good ones, I like it. " - whiskyfun.com
Originally released in 1997 as a US exclusive, this special bottling was initially matured in Bourbon casks for approximately five years followed by an extended period in oloroso sherry casks. Described by the boys at Edradour as "an old fashioned whisky for those looking for how it used to be made", the aim here has been to retain maximum flavour for your buck. The story goes MacLean was visiting Edradour and helped select the first cask for bottling. Clearly, Maclean has talents besides songwriting as this has been an ongoing success. Named after his famous tune, "Caledonia", Maclean reflects on his choice, adding, “I wrote Caledonia, in 1977 on a beach in Brittany, France, when I was genuinely homesick for Scotland. My life has always been based in Perthshire. For me, the location of Edradour, with its neat cluster of whitewashed buildings, traditional equipment and employment of ancient methods of making single malt whisky, combined with its state of the art bottling facility, typify Caledonia.”
The first thing that attracts you to this whisky is its natural deep topaz colour which makes it look older than its age statement. Then there's the intense medley of dried fruits on the nose that's like Christmas cake with a touch of ginger bread in later passes. The theme continues in a rich and textural mouthfeel with juicy raisin, spiced stewed fruits and warming cinnamon heat. The finish is vivacious more than sweet, developing spicy oak and late fruitiness of a dark chocolate kind. These bottlings are reported to vary from batch to batch. All said, this one comes across as a well poised, buxom beauty from a squeaky clean sherry cask. 46% Alc./Vol. Non-chill-filtered.
Other reviews... about as thick as it gets. Nose this and fruit is soon dripping off your proboscis...the lingering oils confirm a wide cut has been made those dozen years back...Gosh, hold onto your hats, this is some ride! 91 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2016
[circa 2009 bottling]...Colour: full gold. Nose: sometimes some Edradours are difficult because of their, say unusual profile, but sometimes that profile can be an asset, especially when it’s not too obvious. Yes, talking about that kind of soapiness that, in fact, isn’t really soapy, rather ‘bizarrely leathery’ if you see what I mean. Anyway, it’s well here in this Caledonia but blended with several very nice aromas such as chestnut honey, cured ham (Jabugo, really) and just touches of camphor that go very well with the whole. Also some flinty notes and just wee whiffs of gunpowder. Mouth: I think this one’s got all the good sides of Edradour. Marrons glacés, orange cake, marmalade, some leather and chlorophyll (gums), hints of kummel and cardamom, grapefruits… Nice profile, probably cleaner than usual. Liquorice allsorts. Pleasant, creamy mouth feel. Finish: rather long, coating, a tad jammier now. Chocolate-dipped orange zests. Comments: rather rich but unexpectedly refreshing for Edradour. One of the good ones, I like it. 83 points - whiskyfun.com
[circa 2022 bottling]...I added a touch of water to this dram and it seemed to mellow out some of the spice, turning it more silky smooth. Butterscotch and pecans develop more with that added dash of water, but I’d be careful in adding too much here. Overall this is a delicious and chewy whisky. It packs so much flavour, so much that one or two drams would be enough. A great dessert whisky. It’s nicely complex and delivers on value. I’d happily pay the retail for this bottle and restock when this inevitably gets polished off. A touch on the dirty side palate wise, which is right up my street. Not as dirty as say a Mortlach, but a welcoming surprise as it opens up. - dramface.com
Full sherry impact, but contained—not excessive or sappy. Rich, with nutty toffee, pot still rum, a variety of raisins (regular and golden), date, honeyed fruit, polished leather, and a hint of tobacco. Good resinous grip on the finish to balance the sweetness. The flavors are nicely integrated. 87 points - whiskyadvocate.com (Summer 2010) Reviewed by: John Hansell

Joe Czerwinski - Wine Advocate (May 17, 2024)I loved the 2022 Côtes Du Rhône Cuvée Maclura, which would be one heck of a great house red. Spicy red and black fruits, peppery garrigue, leather, and herbes de Provence all give way to a medium-bodied, supple, nicely textured, savory, focused red that’s absolutely loaded with character.

Jacopo Poli Sassicaia di Grappa (500ml) - DAMAGED GIFT BOXVeneto, ITALYReduced from $150.00$145. 00Bottle$1740.00 DozenABV: 40%The highly regarded Jacopo Poli distillery is an artisan operation solely owned by the Poli family, founded in 1898 in Schiavon, near Bassano del Grappa, in the hearth of Veneto, the most typical region for Grappa production. The grapes and pomace for this grappa (80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc) were sourced from Tuscany’s famed Sassicaia vineyard. Soon after the pomace arrives at the distillery (still dripping with wine) distillation takes place in copper pot stills after which the product is aged for at least four years in Allier oak barrels, and another three years in bottle.
Tasting note: Very pale straw colour. Appealing, lifted aromas are salty, herbal and biscuity at first becoming sweeter and dried apple like (more peel than pulp) with aeration. After five minutes the aromas reduce rather than accentuate. Entry is silky. Mid palate shows good concentration and is at the sweeter end of the grappa spectrum with buttery, mildly nutty flavours followed by a creamy, vanilla custard finish. Aftertaste is clean and dry with a faint butterscotch / vanilla fade that’s a little short, however this seduces with its textural qualities and beautiful poise. 40% Alc./Vol.

A component is fermented and aged in new French oak puncheons, adding texture and depth to an otherwise lemon-accented and fairly racy wine. Aromatic with lemon blossom and a smidge of hay, lightly spiced, and an even lighter spray of nutty lees across the palate. And, yes, acidity is very much at work here. Drink by 2031.

Other reviews... A classic sherry whisky with a pleasant fruitiness. Due to the full maturation, the sherry notes are clearly prominent, but well integrated and not overpowering. However, I detect a strange, indefinable note that's hard to pin down. I suspect PX casks may have been involved. Overall, a solid treat with a gentle yet present sweetness. - whiskybase.com

The Massena venture was started by two High School mates, Dan Standish (formerly winemaker at Torbreck) and Jaysen Collins (previously manager at Turkey Flat). The duo are noted for trialling unusual varieties such as Primitivo, Barbera, Dolcetto, Roussanne, Saperavi and Tannat. The sixty year old Shiraz vines from Greenock that form the base of this wine were ready to be uprooted due to the lack of yields and the reluctance of other companies to pay extra for the A grade fruit. After repeated requests for access to these grapes, at 'the eleventh hour' the owners agreed to stop the bulldozer and retain a small area of vines. No American oak is used at Massena. After 15 months in seasoned French oak the wine was moved to tank in individual components for several months before blending and bottling without fining or filtration.
