The name behind the famous Rob Abuelo brand, Distilleria Don Jose was founded by Don Jose Varelo Blanco as the Republic of Panama's first sugar mill in 1908. Nearly three decades later his three sons persuaded him to establish a distillery. In 1936, he fulfilled that dream. The third generation has since stepped in, developing proporietery yeast cultures. Silky smooth and soft on the nose, the aromas conjure honey drizzled buckwheat pancakes, candied pineapple, hints of papaya and light molasses. Almost Jamaican in its insistence on dark, heavy fruits, the noticeable alchohol, mouthfilling mid-palate and lengthy bittersweet finish makes this feel north-Caribbean more than South American.
