Notes from the producers... "This decadent marriage of fully matured Spanish Pedro Ximénez casks marks a bold first in Overeem Distillery’s 20-year history. The nose opens with a bouquet of forest fruits, before warming into a viscous, rich boysenberry compote, layered with festive spice. The palate leads with tart grape, perfectly balanced by the rich spice of oak and pepper on the finish. You'll discover notes of figs and dates, with gentle flutterings of milk chocolate throughout. At 52% ABV, the clean, refined Overeem spirit truly shines — delivering a full-bodied and deeply satisfying experience from start to finish." Richard Mathews - Head of Whisky.

    2024 Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou Pre-Arrival Offer
    Saint Julien, Bordeaux, FRANCE
    $299. 00
    Bottle
    $3588.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

As a relatively large estate in Saint-Julien, the 75 hectare Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou estate is planted to 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, at a density of 10,000 vines per hectare. They also own a small parcel of land in Haut-Medoc. Changes in the winery, and a greater focus on parcel selection for the Grand Vin has resulted in a reduction in output from around 20,000 cases per year in the 1980’s to around 10,000 cases today. And the wines have never looked better. The pair of 2009 and 2010, along with the 2016 are considered standouts for the region, intense and concentrated efforts that will live for many years to come.

    Other Reviews....
The 2024 Ducru-Beaucaillou is showing well at this stage, unfurling in the glass with a perfumed bouquet of dark berries, flowers, gentian and fresh licorice, interwoven with delicate spicy nuances. Medium to full-bodied, layered, and seamless, it is lively and refined, with somewhat firm tannins leading to a gently grippy finish. This was harvested between September 30 and October 15. Drink 2030-2044.

    Yohan Castaing - Wine Advocate

The 2024 Ducru-Beaucaillou is a sleek, elegant wine. Silky tannins give the 2024 its distinctly mid-weight, lithe personality. Readers will find a gracious Ducru built more on persistence and nervy tension than size or opulence. Blue/black fruits, lavender, cloves, menthol and chocolate open over time. It will be fascinating to see how this ages. Drink 2034-2054.

    Antonio Galloni - Vinous

Excellent depth with very good concentration. Lots of dusty, small-grained tannins. Densely packed, with nervy minerals, blackberries, dark chocolate, violets and cassis. Full-bodied and very fresh, with a lengthy finish. Structured and tightly framed. Shows good potential. 86% cabernet sauvignon and 14% merlot.
    96-97 points
    Zekun Shuai - JamesSuckling.com

As to the Grand Vin, the 2024 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is based on 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot, resting in 100% new oak. Its deep purple hue is followed by a terrific 2024 that defies the challenges of the vintage. Pure cassis, darker currants, graphite, crushed stone, and sappy violet notes all emerge on the nose. It's medium-bodied, with a beautifully layered, concentrated mid-palate, ripe yet velvety tannins, and a great finish. This classic Saint-Julien will benefit from bottle age and is another brilliant effort from the team. It's one of the richer, more structured wines in the vintage, yet it remains balanced, precise, and never overdone.

Lovely aromatics on the nose, deep vivid purple. Floral scents and lots of Cabernet markers, dried mint, clove, aniseed and blackcurrants. Cool and crunchy straight away, this has a gorgeous smooth texture with ripe and concentrated fruit. I like this, it feels restrained and not overdone with a silky fruit profile and firm but fine tannins. There's a softness to this and a long length with a push of flavour. It has a deep, dark fruit aspect - not too sharp or sour, balanced in terms of acidity and fruit with wet stones, graphite and liquorice on the finish. Elegant and enjoyable. 3.8pH. Drink 2032 - 2050.

2024 Chateau Leoville Poyferre Pre-Arrival Offer
    Saint Julien, Bordeaux, FRANCE
    $160. 00
    Bottle
    $1920.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

Chateau Leoville Poyferre is part of the trio of properties formed when the large 200 hectare Leoville estate was divided in 1840. Seen as the most plush and exotic of the group, Leoville Poyferre has also been the most consistent since 2000. While much of the plantings are intermixed with those of Leoville Las Cases, the Grand Vin comes from a total of 60 hectares, and is planted to 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. The estate also produces a second wine, Pavillon de Leoville Poyferre, along with the previously unofficial second wine Moulin Riche which comes from a dedicated 21 hectare plot.

    Other Reviews....
Offering up aromas of jammy berries and toasty oak, the 2024 Léoville Poyferré is a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. Medium-bodied, dense and blocky, it's firm, tannic and chewy, with some green characteristics vying with its creamy patina of new wood. Harvest took place between 24 September and 10 October, and some lots saw some reverse osmosis.
    89-91 points
    William Kelley - Wine Advocate

The 2024 Léoville-Poyferré was picked from September 24 to October 10 at 26.42 hl/ha. There was some reverse osmosis on the Merlot and Cabernet Franc varieties. Quasi-Pauillac in style, it offers quite backward black fruit, hints of melted tar and graphite on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied and quite succulent with fleshy ripe tannins, tobacco-laced black fruit, brown spices and light undergrowth. With a fine supple landing on the finish in typical "LP" fashion, this constitutes a delicious, early-drinking Poyferré that will be more approachable than other vintages. Drink 2028-2050.

    Neal Martin - Vinous

A bit closed and almost steely at the moment. At the same time, there is depth and huge structure, showing black cherries, mulberries, fine spices and violets. Full-bodied, this has heaps of very small-grained, dusty tannins on the palate and a long finish. A concentrated wine. Wait and see.
    94-95 points
    Zekun Shuai - JamesSuckling.com

Looking at the Grand Vin, the 2024 Château Léoville Poyferré is based on 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It shows deep purple hues and classic notes of cassis, lead pencil, graphite, crushed stone, and violets. Pure, polished, and elegant on the palate, it has perfectly ripe tannins and plays in the forward, charming style of the vintage while still delivering plenty of depth and richness. It's aging in 80% new French oak for 18 to 20 months.

Arlett Pineau Des Charentes Cask Finish Single Malt French Whisky (700ml)
    FRANCE
    $129. 99
    Bottle
    $1559.88 Dozen
    ABV: 48%

While Arlett offer several wood-finished variants, this edition offers something out of the ordinary for whisky drinkers. It's appropriate that the Tessendier brothers selected their local apéritif as the support here, as they are firstly producers of premium Cognac. Just a few months in x-Pineau des Charentes casks has added secondary notes of dried apricots, wild honey and cinnamon to the cereal character of the whisky. The flavours complement the malt, becoming better defined and juicier through the finish. A higher ABV gives the palate more presence without adding heat or prickle, and there's also lovely sweet-dry balance. The most impressive finishing in the lineup, if Pineau des Charentes is your thing, this is your dram. 48% Alc./Vol.

Column distilled using local molasses, this bright gold rum offers medium-fresh aromas of banana bread, desiccated coconut, vanilla and chocolate, repeated on the palate in a soft, creamy, light to medium-bodied style evoking ripe cantaloupe and banana. The finish adds the required tannic grip, fresher fruitier notes and gentle spices. A profile that doesn't stand out in any particular way while being eminently drinkable. 392 bottles produced. 43% Alc./Vol. Tasted from a 30ml sample.

Loaded Barrel Butterscotch Single Malt Australian Whisky Liqueur (500ml)
    Melbourne, Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $58. 99
    Bottle
    $707.88 Dozen
    ABV: 22%

Loaded Barrel's latest offering sees natural butterscotch flavours blended with their four-year-old single malt. The result may not be as complex as traditional Scotch Whisky liqueurs, but it avoids the intense sweetness of butterscotch schnapps. Shaken well before tasting (as per the producer's recommendation), the nose feels moderated by the base spirit. It's sweet, with tooth-coating butterscotch and milk chocolate flavours, yet it retains a lightness that allows the sugars to 'breathe', extending the palate length and avoiding the clunky, cloying character typical of the category. A one-trick-pony, but in the context of dessert liqueurs, this is a success. Even if you don't have a sweet tooth, one taste shouldn't be out of the question. 22% Alc./Vol.

Park VS Carte Blanche Cognac (700ml)
    Cognac, FRANCE
    $109. 99
    Bottle
    $1319.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Cognac Park is the premier brand from Distillerie Tessendier, a Borderies-based house established in 1880. Today, fourth-generation brothers and Master Blenders, Lilian and Jérôme Tessendier run the show. Not limited to blending, they also distill from their own 60 hectare estate and buy around 40,000 hectoliters from winemakers, maintaining relationships that span several generations. The entry-level VS is a 50/50 marriage of Fins Bois and Petite Champagne cognacs aged for a minimum of three years, but most of it is closer to six. The goal was to create an "energetic Cognac" that grants bartenders 'carte blanche’ to use it as they wish in cocktails, however, it feels like what they’ve made here would be quickly lost in mixing. Tasting it on its own is essential. The first pass elicits pure, floral-soft aromatics, coaxing out scents of ripe pears, apricots and citrus blossom. That soft touch is echoed on the palate which is restrained, elegant and less overtly fruity than many a VS, also impeccably pure. Dried fruits, poached quince, dry triple sec and lingering wisps of passionfruit in the lengthy rebound make this very classy, understated VS seem out of place in its classification. Highly recommended. 40% Alc./Vol. Tasted from 50ml sample.

Notes from the producers... Menthol, linden blossom, apricot, banana, pear, ginger, dried fruits, pepper (pink), lychee, orange zest, and white flowers.

    $1799.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

A 30ml sample yields atypical rum aromas; Subdued, vaguely vegetal, eaux de vie-like, developing more familiar, though still muted notes of molasses and vanilla after 2-3 minutes of air contact. A light entry follows with soft, medium-dry flavours of dried fruits, aged grappa, shortbread and vanilla with a warming finish that resembles sherried malt whisky. Hard to pin down. A great throw-in at your next blind rum tasting. 429 bottles produced. 43% Alc./Vol.

Arlett single malt is produced at France's Distillerie Tessendier, better known for their Cognacs. Three years maturing in American oak and x-bourbon barrels delivers a malt with moderate aromas of cereals, digestif biscuits and sweet nutty tones. Soft and accessible, the palate continues the cereal theme, adding sprinklings of milk chocolate, flaked almonds and toasted grains, closing with delicate bitter peel and cedary oak. 40% alc./vol.

    2024 Chateau Haut-Brion Pre-Arrival Offer
    Pessac Leognan, Bordeaux, FRANCE
    $775. 00
    Bottle
    $9300.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

Long before the 1855 classification of Bordeaux, Chateau Haut-Brion were renowned for their quality and style. When Thomas Jefferson visited the region in 1787 he noted the quality of wines in the area, creating his own hierarchy that listed Chateau Haut-Brion along with Chateau Latour, Chateau Margaux, and Chateau Lafite and the finest wines of Bordeaux. This same elite group were later given First Growth status, and Haut-Brion remains the only estate outside of the Medoc to claim this honour. Located near the city of Bordeaux, the 48 hectare Chateau Haut-Brion vineyard is planted to 48% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot for the reds, while the whites are a mix of 51% Semillon and 49% Sauvignon Blanc.

    Other Reviews....
The 2024 Haut-Brion is more perfumed than La Mission Haut-Brion, unfurling in the glass with aromas of raspberries, cassis, dark berries and spices mingled with elegantly floral touches. Medium to full-bodied, layered and sappy, it has a firm texture and powdery tannins, leading to a long, spicy and lead pencil-inflected finish. Composed of 47.2% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37.5% Merlot and 15.3% Cabernet Franc, this vintage features one of the highest proportions of Cabernet Franc in recent years—comparable to vintages such as 1993, 2004, 2010, 2011 and 2020—and should gain harmony with the élevage. In the context of the vintage, this is a notable success, owing in large part to Haut-Brion’s intramural position in Pessac, where the estate’s terroir benefits from slightly warmer average temperatures than properties located outside the city, contributing to more complete ripening of the grapes. Drink 2028-2044.

The 2024 Haut-Brion is dark and brooding in demeanor, but obviously not as tannic or forbidding as it can be in the early going. All the Haut-Brion signatures are very much present, but they're portrayed in a decidedly understated style that speaks to the personality of the year. Black fruit, scorched earth, spice, tobacco and leather build with time in the glass. The 2024 is a super-classy Haut-Brion. There's gorgeous substance here. Drink 2034-2054.
    94-96 points
    Antonio Galloni - Vinous

This year, the style of Haut Brion shows through with transparency, beautiful balance and precision. Fine austerity, with excellent minerality, dark olives and red and dark berries. Structured on the mid-palate. Beautiful depth for the vintage, with really fine-grained tannins and a lengthy finish that lingers. So much vibrancy and finesse. A classic vintage.
    97-98 points
    Zekun Shuai - JamesSuckling.com

I wouldn't be surprised to see the 2024 Château Haut-Brion be the wine of the vintage, and while it's not going to make you forget any of the recent truly great releases, it has more depth, suppleness, and charm than the vast majority of wines in the vintage. Ripe blackcurrants, scorched earth, graphite, crushed stone, and violets all define the aromatics, and it has nicely integrated oak, a layered, ripe, seamless mouthfeel, and building tannins. It's a beautiful, layered, elegant Haut-Brion.

2024 Chateau Leoville Las Cases Pre-Arrival Offer
    Saint Julien, Bordeaux, FRANCE
    $320. 00
    Bottle
    $3840.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

Chateau Leoville Las Cases is one of the larger classified estates in Bordeaux, with the Second Growth Saint-Julien property totalling 98 hectares. Winemaking is very traditional, using old oak vats for fermentation, and up to 90% new French oak for maturation. While the wines can look rather austere in their youth, from great years they can resemble some of the finest First Growth wines as they reach maturity. The Chateau also produces a second wine, Le Petit Lion du Marquis de Las Cases (from 2009), which is not to be confused with Clos du Marquis, a wine that is always produced from a separate parcel and is considered a standalone brand.

    Other Reviews....
One of the wines of the vintage, and certainly one that's likely to number among the longest-lived, is the 2024 Léoville Las Cases, a blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc and 5% Merlot that attained 13.1% alcohol. Unwinding in the glass with a pure, intense bouquet of cassis, violets and pencil shavings, it's medium to full-bodied, with terrific mid-palate density and concentration but also a seamless integration of tannin and acidity that's especially rare this year, concluding with a long, penetrating finish. Jean-Hubert Delon observes that the 2024 shares "the aromas and flavors of the 1986," defined by Cabernet Sauvignon ripened at the end of the growing season, though of course the 2024, lacking the huge power and structure of that vintage, is much more amiable than the 1986.
    93-95 points
    William Kelley - Wine Advocate

The 2024 Léoville Las-Cases is gorgeous. All the Las-Cases signatures are present, just dialed down a touch. Blue/purplish fruit, lavender, grilled herbs, graphite and menthol are all beautifully delineated. The 2024 is distinguished by its precision and total class. Time in the glass brings out the wine's intensely floral, spice-inflected aromatics. Brisk acids and bracing mineral notes wrap it all together in style. I can't wait to taste this from bottle. Drink 2034-2054.

Complex, refined and truly mineral, this has natural vibrancy and freshness as well as excellent depth. Light midpalate concentration but also no sweetness at all. Medium- to full-bodied with chalky, stony tannins and a long, very tense finish. A vintage of delicacy and finesse. If you seek less alcohol and less power, this will be a great year to buy. 84% cabernet sauvignon, 11% cabernet franc and 5% merlot.
    97-98 points
    Zekun Shuai - JamesSuckling.com

The 2024 Château Léoville Las Cases is another incredibly classy wine from this team. It's a blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Merlot, coming in at 13.1% natural alcohol and aging in 75% new barrels. Cassis, spicy oak, graphite, and tobacco all emerge on the nose, and it's medium-bodied on the palate, with a focused, elegant mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and the notable yet integrated acidity that marks the vintage. Complete and layered, this elegant Las Cases brings to mind the great vintages of the 1980s and 1990s. It will benefit from just a few years in bottle, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it evolve for decades.

    2024 Chateau Cos d'Estournel Pre-Arrival Offer
    Saint Estephe, Bordeaux, FRANCE
    $280. 00
    Bottle
    $3360.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

Chateau Cos d’Estournel have made great strides in the recent past, and their new winemaking facility is one of the most impressive and purpose driven in the area. All movement of wine from the moment grapes arrive is done via gravity, a process involving a style of wine elevator to raise and lower tanks, and one that removes the use of pumps entirely. While the wines from this Second Growth property have been patchy throughout their history, it’s no secret that they have been on fire over the last 15 years, producing rich, concentrated, and potentially very long lived wines warranting perfect scores for numerous wine critics.

    Other Reviews....
The 2024 Cos d'Estournel is shaping up beautifully. Offering up aromas of sweet cassis, plums, pencil shavings and iris, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and suave, reflecting this estate's pivot to a more harmonious, less aggressively extracted style. With a layered, seamless core of fruit framed by plenty of sweet, powdery tannin, it's a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 1.5% Cabernet Franc and 0.5% Petit Verdot that checks in at 12.7% alcohol. Cos is an early-ripening terroir, and that clearly played to the relative strengths of the vintage. Harvest here began with the estate's old-vine Merlot on gravel on September 23, concluding with the last Cabernet Sauvignon on October 7.

The 2024 Cos d'Estournel could very well be one of the wines of the vintage. Bright and vibrant in the glass, with tons of energy, the 2024 impresses with its vertical structure, depth and overall balance. Blue/purplish fruit, spice, new leather, lavender and mocha are beautifully delineated throughout. The 2024 is super-classic. The modest 12.8% alcohol is notable, especially because that also means there is less extraction of wood. Cos is one of my early favorites in 2024. Drink 2034-2054.

There is huge depth and lots of intensity from this year's Cos. Quite powerful, deeply colored and dense, but there is freshness. Concentrated and tight-grained, with a full body and a pretty lengthy finish. Quite unique for its broadness and density, with lots of blackberries in the finish.

The 2024 Château Cos D'Estournel is a clear step up, with a concentrated, rich, yet still elegant profile. Cassis, graphite, crushed stone, and freshly sharpened pencil notes all define the aromatics, and it's medium to full-bodied, has a focused, structured mouthfeel, good acidity, and building tannins. It's going to require patience but is clearly an outstanding Cos in the making. Based on 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 1.5% Cabernet Franc, and a splash of Petit Verdot, resting in 50% new oak, it hit 12.76% with a pH of 3.57 and an IPT of 71.

Wonderful fragrance coming out of the glass, perfumed notes with cedar, cherry and chocolate. Juicy, sweetly chewy and grippy, this has so much personality straight away with such density in the mouth for the vintage but so well controlled. Great intensity and follow through with a direct line but not too lean at all. Freshness is there but ripeness is too so you have a great combination of structure and focus. Precise and refined but utterly joyful too. It keeps a straight line towards the finish, narrowing with cola, liquorice and slate but this will grow over ageing. Wonderful, a great effort. 13% press. 0.5% Petit Verdot completes the blend. Ageing 50% new barrels. 3.57pH. A yield of 30hl/ha. Kept organic status. Drink 2032-2050.

    2024 Chateau Giscours Pre-Arrival Offer
    Margaux, Bordeaux, FRANCE
    $125. 00
    Bottle
    $1500.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

Chateau Giscours in Margaux has been making wine in the region as far back at the 1300’s, but it’s only recently that they’ve earned a reputation for outstanding wines. Extensive replanting of the vineyards and a change in composition to include more Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend has resulted in wines truly reflective of the appellation. Another technology pioneer in the region, Chateau Giscours was one of the first to use gravity to move wine in the cellars. While this practice is common now, it was unique in the 1800’s. They were also one of the first to use optical sorting of the grapes, another common tool used more widely today.

    Other Reviews....
The 2024 Giscours has turned out very well indeed. Offering up incipiently complex aromas of dark berries and cherries mingled with orange zest, licorice, violets and burning embers, it's medium to full-bodied, with good density and richness, with a layered, rather muscular palate and a long, expansive finish. The 2024 is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. The estate retained cover crops to amplify the dry conditions in July and August, accelerating ripening, and once again picked by vine age within blocks, bringing in the younger-vine fruit earlier before it could rot. Merlot came in between 19 and 28 September, and the Cabernet Sauvignon was picked very late, between 1 and 11 October.

The 2024 Giscours is impressive. Elegant and sleek, with fine balance, Giscours is all class. The bouquet alone is so enticing. Small red berry fruit, spice, tobacco, mint and cedar are all finely sketched in a mid-weight, nervy Giscours that is quite showy right out of the gate. There is a bit of edginess in the tannins, but that's not anything that can't be addressed with élevage. A closing burst of aromatics leaves a long-lasting impression. Tasted three times. Drink 2032-2044.

A fresh and vivid red, showing blackcurrants, herbs and hints of needles and dried flowers. Medium-bodied. Nicely chewy tannins extend to the medium-long finish, which is bright, firm and linear. A Giscours that shows the elegance and balance of the vintage. 60% cabernet sauvignon, 31% merlot, 6% cabernet franc and 3% petit verdot.

Based on 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot, and 10% Petit Verdot, the 2024 Château Giscours offers beautiful darker currants, cassis, and violets intermixed with classy oak notes. Medium-bodied and nicely concentrated on the palate, it offers elegant tannins, beautiful balance, and impressive length. The harvest was very late here, and it shows in the depth and concentration of the wine.

A little shy on the nose, needs some coaxing, blackcurrant, blackberry and dark cherry fruit. Dried flowers, roses, violets, milk chocolate, creamy. Lovely texture on the palate, filling and round, plush and gently firm. Grippy but not overdone. Some enjoyable austerity but the structure is there and this has mouthwatering acidity. Dried herbs, mint, salty stones, tobacco and some dried spices. Well built with a sense of character. 3% Petit Verdot completes the blend. Ageing 50% new oak barrels. 3.71pH. Tasted three times. The 2024 Canon is shaping up brilliantly, wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet cherries, blackberries and raspberries mingled with notions of rose petals and spices. Medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy, with tangy acids (the pH is a very low 3.35) and ultrarefined tannins, it concludes with a long, mineral finish. A blend of 78% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Franc, it's the estate's first year of organic certification.

    William Kelley - Wine Advocate

The 2024 Canon is superb. One of the standouts of the vintage, the 2024 possesses striking mid-palate depth to match its vertical personality. Chalk, white pepper, mint, lavender, rose petal, slate and blue/purplish fruit all stain the palate. There's gorgeous depth and density here, and yet the 2024 remains a super-classic wine from the property. This is a real stunner. That's all there is to it. Tasted four times. Drink 2034-2059.

Structured, balanced and textured, it has aromas of red berries and pine needles. It’s medium-bodied with velvety tannins. Rather seamless. Long, juicy finish with salty limestone undertones.

The Grand Vin 2024 Château Canon is 78% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Franc that will spend 16-18 months in 49% new oak, with a small amount in foudre. Black raspberries, graphite, crushed stone, and violet notes all define the aromatics, and it's medium-bodied, fresh, has a vibrant, layered mouthfeel, and a great finish. It's a classic Canon with its minerality, focused, elegant mouthfeel, and outstanding length. Tasted multiple times with consistent results.

Beautiful fragrance on the nose, really alive and forward, roses, purple flowers and red berry fruit. Lifted and intense with a real push of cherry and strawberry fruit. So clean, pure, lively and tangy, the acidity and fruit is really at the fore here. Tannins are almost subtle, gently giving frame while the minerality adds an extra layer of complexity on the finish. I love this because it’s playful, really not serious, harmonious and full of flavour. Juicy, alive and mouthwatering. Such a great wine and one where you really can't taste the difficulties of the year in the glass. Crystalline and pure, elegant and super charming. Ageing 49% new oak barrels, 6% foudres for 16 to 18 months. 3.35pH.A yield of 45hl/ha. Drink 2030 - 2045.

The 2024 Rauzan-Ségla is magnificent. One of the top wines of the Left Bank, Rauzan-Ségla possesses tremendous textural density and mind-blowing balance. Dark fruit, lavender, spice, licorice and new leather are all dialed up in a potent, layered Margaux that offers stunning harmony and incredible purity. At this stage, Rauzan-Ségla is one of the wines of the vintage in Bordeaux. Elegant yet powerful, the 2024 is simply magnificent. Tasted four times. Drink 2043-2054.

It brings another level of density as well as finesse. Ripe black cherries, cassis, graphite, spring flowers, and beautifully integrated oak all define the aromatics, and it's medium-bodied, with solid mid-palate depth, ripe tannins, and outstanding length.

Cherry stone on the nose, rose, violet, strawberry and red cherry. Chewy and well textured, filling but gentle, the tannins are exceptional and the freshness is so well balanced with the fruit. So sophisticated, confident, smooth and utterly compelling. I love it, round, soft with lifted acidity that gives the tang with some liquorice on the finish. Energy and focus with real succulence. Still not a big wine, but this has plenty of style and refinement and a feeling of happiness about it. 0.5% Cabernet Franc completes the blend. The 2024 Pavie Macquin offers up attractive aromas of raspberries, violets, rose petals and spices, framed by a discreet 45% new oak. Medium to full-bodied, ample and pure, it's built around a tangy, somewhat assertive spine of acidity that lends this wine an angular, edgy profile. Of course, that may integrate with additional élevage.
    88-90 points
    William Kelley - Wine Advocate

The 2024 Pavie Macquin is positively gorgeous. Silky, layered and voluptuous, the 2024 is so impressive right out of the gate. Plush contours wrap around a core of purplish fruit, lavender, licorice, spice, menthol and chocolate. All the signatures of this site come through loud and clear. Savory and floral notes supported by clean veins of salinity extend the persistent finish. Pavie Macquin shows what was possible in 2024. The choice to harvest everything in October (from the 3rd to the 8th) paid off big time. Aging is in French oak, with about 15% in larger 500-liter barrels, 45% new wood overall. Tasted three times. Drink 2034-2054.

What a bright, racy wine showing beautiful chalky tannins and mid-palate fruit of good density. Minerally, with blue and red fruit. Taut on the palate, with a medium to full body supported by tense, chalky tannins. The long and really succulent finish goes on for a while. Precise. 84% merlot, 15% cabernet franc and 1% cabernet sauvignon.
    96-97 points
    Zekun Shuai - JamesSuckling.com

Incorporating slightly less Cabernet Franc than usual, the 2024 Château Pavie Macquin checks in as 84% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon, resting in 40% new barrels, with 10% in larger barrels. It has a classic Pavie Macquin nose of dark cherries, cassis, graphite, and spring flowers, with a subtle, cooler-toned edge that always seems to come through from this terroir. This carries to a medium-bodied Saint-Émilion with a focused, nicely structured, balanced mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and juicy acidity that carries through the finish. It's a beautiful, vibrant 2024 and one of the few in the vintage that's going to really benefit from bottle age. Tasted multiple times with consistent results.

    Ballarat, Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $74. 99
    Bottle
    $899.88 Dozen
    ABV: 42%

Weighs in at just above 40% ABV but delivers a generous gin bouquet of mixed citrus, dried herbs (tarragon, sage?) followed by crushed pine buds and bush pepper. Creamy, accessible entry develops to a medium to full bodied middle, repeating those piney-juniper accents with spikes of pepper and a vibrant lemon-thyme finish. Lots of personality on its own, this should equally lend itself to mixing. 42% Alc./Vol. Batch #5 tasted.

Notes from the producers... A juniper-forward gin with big citrus hits of creamy lemon, mandarin, and grapefruit up front are rounded out with aromatic pepper. Fresh citrus notes from the inclusion of Lemon Drop Wax foraged from the Grampians region is balanced with sweetness and warm spice, giving this gin a well-rounded mouthfeel and smooth after taste.

    $875.88 Dozen
    ABV: 38%

Until now, the Cuban rum category in Australia has been limited to Havana Club. Santiago de Cuba breaks the drought with three new lines. Named after the city of Santiago and boasting over 160 years of distilling experience, Cuba Ron's rum making tradition is unrivalled on the island. Their portfolio starts with the Carta Blanca, a three year old spirit intended primarily as a mixer, offering a balance of a light sweetness with a dry finish. 38% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... A typically characterful Cuban light rum with pleasing grassy, vanilla and leathery notes. 4.5 stars - diffordsguide.com

...Despite the plus points to this rum I still feel that overall it is all just a little bit to light and to clean.  The only real evidence of “rum” comes in the finish which is slightly leathery with a note of tobacco.  I really enjoy more fruity white rums such as Chairman’s Reserve White Label and Appleton Special. This is probably handy for a bartender needing a more easy going rum. From my perspective though it is very average. 2 Stars - thefatrumpirate.com

    CUBA
    $124. 99
    Bottle
    $1499.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

A big age statement for Cuban Rum, Ron Santiago's Extra Añejo 11 year old blends the sweetness of sugarcane molasses grown in the Oriente province in the South East of the island with the skillful touch of the Maestros del Ron Cubano. Aged in white oak, there's a nice balance of mature notes including estery tropical fruits, coconut, delicate vanilla and almond, with the sweetness perfectly balanced by moderate spices. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... If you are looking to explore the “lighter” side of rum. I would recommend this as a sipper. It’s quite easy going but at the same time has enough going on to remain interesting. The balance of this rum is really good... Sure this works great in things like an Old Fashioned but I think its best enjoyed on its own. 4 stars - the fatrumpirate.com

Il Marroneto produce some of the purest and most perfumed expressions of Sangiovese made anywhere. Part of the secret lies in their prime location within Brunello's traditional top class territory, situated at 450m above sea level with a cool northern exposure. Combined with the much lauded talents of gifted winemaker Alessandro Mori, and it's clear to see why Il Marroneto are so highly coveted by Brunello fans worldwide.

Alessandro Mori has always adopted a traditional approach, aiming for elegance and purity, without sacrificing depth or impact in his wines. Organic practices have been used in the vineyards since 1988, while natural fermentation occurs and there is neither fining nor filtration before bottling.

    Other Reviews....
Alessandro Mori did not have a Rosso vineyard, so he cobbled together vines from declassified Brunello and leased land (measuring 7,000 square meters) to provide the fruit for this wine. The Il Marroneto 2022 Rosso di Montalcino Ignaccio is underlined by brightness and freshness with forest berry fruits, blue flower and navel orange. Harvest in 2022 started early on September 20th, compared to September 24th in 2020 and much later in 2019 on October 5th. Drink 2025-2038.

Monica Larner - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2022 Rosso di Montalcino Ignaccio is exotic with a seductive blend of spiced blood orange, wild strawberries, rose petals and a dusting of spice. Juicy and vividly fresh, it sweeps across the palate with ripe raspberry and cherry-berry fruits while taking on a coating of chalky minerality toward the close. Sour citrus enlivens the experience as this finishes long and staining yet still remarkably fresh. The mouth waters for more under an air of violet inner florals. Simply spellbinding. This is already a total pleasure, yet it has the balance for short-term cellaring. Due to the changes in the Rosso di Montalcino regulations, Il Marroneto will be able to use another hectare, originally planted for IGT Sangiovese, in their Rosso in the coming vintages, which means more of this glorious juice to go around. Drink 2024-2032.

    Other Reviews....
Alessandro Mori makes two Rosso di Montalcino wines, and the difference between them comes down to the selection of barrels used in the final blend. The Il Marroneto 2022 Rosso di Montalcino Iacopo has a special story because Alessandro asked his son Iacopo to choose the one barrel that becomes this wine. That process was initiated in 2019 and has been the impetus for this wine ever since. With that first vintage, Iacopo selected a barrel with a slightly darker-colored wine, lots of blackcurrant intensity and a textural profile that veers more toward Brunello than it does Rosso. He has looked to re-create those characteristics in all the vintages to follow. This is a ramped-up expression of Sangiovese with energy, youthful fruit, cassis and blood orange. Drink 2025-2038.

Monica Larner - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Deeply complex, the 2022 Rosso di Montalcino Iacopo wafts up with a cascade of rose petals, incense, cinnamon sticks, spiced citrus rinds and dried black cherries. This is silken in texture with depths of dark red berry fruits that saturate, underscored by saline minerals and spice, all guided by a core of brilliant acidity. The 2022 finishes with tremendous length and a crunchy feel, leaving gripping tannins that tug at the palate. This truly deserves the title of Baby Brunello. What an absolutely stunning wine. The Iacopo is produced from one declassified barrel of Brunello fruit. Drink 2026-2034.

A cask selection made by Alessandro's son, Iacopo, who says it ‘aims for the complexity and depth of a Brunello’. It shows more amplitude than Ignaccio, with depths of dark cherry fruit with some earth, spice and cream, and peaks of really bright and zesty blood orange, and floral overtones. Lovely freshness and impressive complexity. Drink 2026-2034.

The Il Marroneto 2020 Brunello di Montalcino is a wine of special depth and elegance. Alessandro Mori tells me that fermentation in 2020 proceeded nicely with what he describes as a "primordial stew" of grape must, resulting in high pressure "geysers" or "liquid bombs" that rip right through the cap because of pressure build-up. Someone is having tons of fun in the winery. High temperatures (between 36 to 38 degrees Celsius) serve to fix the wine's ruby color and the elegance of its perfumes, which are more floral than fruity. At the end of fermentation, he manages the skins with light wetting by hand with a tube. This vintage offers softness and a silky texture that feels glossy to the palate. Drink 2026-2048.

The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino is an understated beauty, slowly emerging with a delicate blend of rose petals, fresh mint, crushed rocks and vividly ripe black cherries. It hovers across the palate, lifted and finessed yet spry, with ripe red berry fruits and hints of lavender, taking on a liquid floral concentration toward the close. Pleasantly chewy and long, the 2020 leaves the senses stained in primary concentration, with a tinge of bitter cranberry and pretty inner florals that resonate over a bed of classically dry tannins. This is a more concentrated and intense yet wonderfully balanced rendition of Il Marroneto's Brunello. Drink 2028-2038.

A restrained wine that’s complex and deep, with aromas of cherry stones, butter, fresh violets, orange peel and prunes. Firm tannins with a grainy texture, yet it has a sweet finish, super-energetic acidity and a full body. Flavors of blood oranges and violets. Perfect balance and incredible aging potential. A super classic. Drink or hold.

‘I'd never seen the green [of the vegetation] like that before’, remarks Alessandro Mori of 2020, putting the vibrancy of the colour down to less pollution as the population remained in their homes. Calling 2020 an easy vintage, much like 2016, the estate now practices accapamento – a ‘wall’ of leaves which act to shade the bunches and also take up some resources, causing the vine to struggle slightly more. There's great freshness here, with coiled potency of vibrant plum and sour and dark cherry at the ripe core. A lick of salinity and a brush of wood accompany silky tannins. One of very few 2020s I have tasted which may be an improvement on the stunning 2019s. Time will tell. Drink 2026-2040.

The Il Marroneto 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Madonna delle Grazie (tasted once in the winery and again in my office) is another classical expression of Sangiovese from vintner Alessandro Mori and his son Iacopo. This vintage is best described as more charming compared to the stacked 2019 vintage or the powerful 2016 edition. This is a very pretty wine, elegant and finessed, with pretty floral highlights of rose and violet that lean into a subtle menthol note. There is caramelized sugar and candied orange. The wine lives in oak for 46 months with just a brief time in steel before going into bottle (at the end of July 2024). This vintage is a little closed or tight in terms of mouthfeel, which suggests it needs more time in bottle to spread its wings. Drink 2027-2055.

Monica Larner - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The undeniably elegant 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Madonna delle Grazie is amazingly fresh and vibrant on the nose, cascading from the glass with a burst of crushed cherries, rose petals, blood oranges and cloves. This displays exceptional elegance and grace, soothing the palate with its silken feel and ripe red and blue fruits. Hints of sour citrus add contrast, a mix of iron-borne minerals and fine tannins that mount toward the close. A saturation of primary concentration remains, offset by residual acidity as this finishes structured and impossibly long, leaving a sour cherry tinge and masses of violet pastille. The 2020 is a showboat yet complex and harmonious from start to finish. It's easily one of the absolute top wines of the vintage. Drink 2028-2042.

An exquisite mix of elegant aromas dominates the nose, with notes of Parma violets, orange peel, Earl Grey tea, dried cherries, smoky woodland and earthy minerality. Full-bodied, it shows significant tannins, but it’s velvety, sweet and full of aging potential. The flavors are enhanced by energetic, slightly lifted acidity and a super-long, austere finish. It will last for decades. Try after 2025.

This single-vineyard Brunello is one of the gems of the denomination. The 2020 reflects the vintage conditions wonderfully, trading in the generosity of 2019 for a more structured and thought-provoking wine. ‘2015 and '16 is like '19 and '20 – the exact same combination’, comments Alessandro Mori. Fragrantly perfumed with potpourri and a hint of spice, it's a bright and vital Sangiovese of impeccable precision and poise. Its youthful creaminess supports freshly picked blackberry, intense dark cherry and some sotto bosco notes, with a streak of salinity and some floral uplift to counterpoint its framework of silky, structural tannins and vertical shape. While less immediately striking than the 2019 was at the same stage, this may shine even brighter in the years to come. Drink 2026-2050.

Aromas of kirsch, black raspberry, anise and plenty of spice nuances are trimmed in just enough oak to notice. The suave, palate coating and solidly concentrated flavors possess a richer and more generous mouthfeel where equally fine-grained tannins shape the less mineral-driven but slightly longer finish. In the context of what is typical, this is a relatively powerful Frémiets that is very much built to repay extended keeping. Drink through 2034+.

Offering up aromas of raspberries, plums, sweet spices and petals, the 2022 Volnay 1er Cru Fremiet is medium to full-bodied, pure and lively, with refined, powdery tannins and a fine-boned, elegant profile.

The 2022 Volnay Fremiet 1er Cru has more depth and fruit concentration compared to the Clos des Angles. The nose displays a mélange of red and black fruit, pressed flowers and a touch of loam aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, just a slight lactic note on the entry, segueing into a more marine-tinged latter half. A pinch of black pepper appears toward the finish. Give this two or three years in bottle. Drink 2026-2042.

Although the vines for this Fremiets are very close to those for the Clos des Angles bottling, the style is very different – it is much more mineral, almost salty, with bright black fruit, notes of violets and spice, and a texture with abundant tannic grip and an almost chewy feel. The domaine farms nearly 1.6 hectares on the steeper slopes with shallow soils. Although it is not as reserved as the Clos des Ducs, this would benefit from five years of age before opening. Drink 2025 - 2050.

Mid crimson purple. The vineyard is just above Clos des Angles, and bears some similarity on the nose. However, the fruit is a little deeper, and darker on the palate, good acidity here, just a little more structure all round. Drink from 2030-2037.

A restrained and intensely floral-suffused nose is reticent to the point of being brooding and only grudgingly provides glimpses of fresh dark berries and spice whiffs. The precise, highly energetic and super-fine middleweight flavors also exude evident minerality on the moderately austere and equally long finale. I almost always prefer the d'Angerville Taillepieds to their Champans but that could well change in 2022 as this is outstanding. Drink through 2034+.

The 2022 Volnay 1er Cru Champans offers up aromas of dark berries, licorice, grilled squab, spices and vine smoke, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and layered palate with a sweet core of fruit framed by powdery tannins that assert themselves on the discreetly carnal finish.

The 2022 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru has a pixelated bouquet with that mélange of red and black fruit that I noticed before. It's perfumed with hints of potpourri and lovely sous-bois/mossy scents in the background. The palate is medium-bodied, with a little crunch on the entry. It's a more structured Champans than I am accustomed to; perhaps the tannins are a bit firmer and less silky in texture at the moment. This will need more time to knit together than d'Angerville's other cuvées. Drink 2028-2048.

This monumental wine is, as always, a reference for the appellation. In 2022, there is a lovely density of plum and blackberry fruit with spice and earth notes. The texture is plump, velvety and long, with supple tannins supporting the wine without adding astringency. D'Angerville destems and gave the grapes a cold soak before fermentation on native yeasts and ageing in cask (mainly used) to preserve the limpid purity of the fruit. Give this wine five years before opening, and it should continue to improve for at least 30 years beyond that. Drink 2027 - 2055.

The archetype of Volnay for Guillaume, and it prepares the way for Clos des Ducs. A clear bright purple. Today, the nose has a light reduction, but the fruit beneath is light on its feet yet with a fine tensile strength. This has a long backbone. An interesting, complex wine which one could easily pass over too quickly. Drink from 2031-2040.

From a very well-known family owned estate with an Italian-Australian heritage, this McLaren Vale winery burst onto the scene in the early 2000’s when the then, world's most powerful wine critic, Robert Parker, lauded many of the wines with scores in the high nineties.
Named in honour of the family’s matriarch, this plush Shiraz was matured in a mix of 25% new French, 5% new American and 70% seasoned oak hogsheads for a period of 16 months.

Oozing with succulence, this rich, seductive McLaren Vale Shiraz is a compelling buy at close to half it’s normal price.

Dense inky black heart with a near equally deep dark red black hue. Heady aromas of liquorice, blackberry and dark plum engulf the nostrils complimented by some vanillin oak, earthy mocha and spice notes. Rich, plush and seductive, the full, weighty palate is swamped with liquorice, blackberry and dark plum fruits that are oozing with succulence. Spicy vanillin oak, subtle earthy mocha and traces of peppered fennel also chime in. Boasting abundant power and a nicely built tannin structure that has a velvety feel, it finishes long and opulent.

It revels in its full flex of the variety and the accompanying woody seasoning. Dark fruit, black pepper, cinnamon, clove, turned earth and undergrowth going on. It soars on the pulverised granite grip of tannins and lingers with its epic array of woody spice. Big vibe, big energy, big wine, and great harmony in all that. Classic stuff.

This is immediately appealing on the nose with dark fruit intensity, game, toasted spice, and cedary oak characters. Named after the matriarch of the *** family, the wine hails from the south-western district of McLaren Vale where much of the *** fruit grows. This is a more demure expression than other Shiraz in the family portfolio, the fruit notes dark blue in tone with subtle vanillin oak integrated now after 20 months maturation in 10% new French and 5% new American barrels. Despite its depths, the palate is quite lively, acidity fresh and flavoursome with its spot on fruit energy, tannins prominent yet balanced with the overall weight of the wine. Most enjoyable.

We do enjoy these blends that often capture a kind of 'quintessential' Speyside character. It's probably a second or third-fill sherry casked malt; regardless, the region's classic traits come accompanied by the gentlest puff of smoke: Chewy muesli, barley cakes, poached orchard fruits, a dollop of honey and a hint of vanilla are all seamlessly stitched together, delicate peat adding depth and old-world charm to the finish. Open fermented with native yeasts; on skins for 16 days. Classically varietal, this is redolent of cherries, woody herbs and dusty earth notes. The oak ageing (12 months in older French) gives it the palate tension a Chianti-phile might expect. But this is the Vale, and a near-40-year history here makes it a rusted on local, with this an excellent example of why it is so suited – mid-weight, sinewy, fresh, savoury and crying out for food. This is the 13th edition in Signatory's 'Small Batch' series. The lower part of the labels are usually dark red. To confuse things, it's now green (like the earlier Cask Strength bottlings in the range). Otherwise, it's a Secret Speyside with the additional designation 'TAM'. So this could be Tamdhu. It was drawn from first-fill Bolgheri Hogsheads (a Tuscan red wine made from grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot). Signatory uses these from time to time. However, given that all modern-day Tamdhu is matured in sherry casks, our suggestion is Tamnavulin out of Bourbon wood. The extra-long wine finish has left a beautiful auburn hue. The taster's tip is give the malt enough time to breathe, because it needs it. 48.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

You’re getting a decent bang for your buck with this classic example of a Margaret River staple, It’s the classic blend but then there’s more. The Savvy came from the cooler Karridale area in the south and 10% of the Semillon was barrel fermented before whole bunch pressing and wild fermentation. You don’t often see that level of winemaking in a wine that sells for $18. The result is a wine that captures the essential fruit energy complemented by that subtle bit of winemaking artifact. A collaboration with local legends, Tom and Phil from the local boutique brewery, Bicheno Beer Co. sees their Imperial Stout aged in x-Waubs Harbour whisky casks. New make spirit from Waub's that started out in ex-Tawny Port casks is then refilled into the empty Stout casks. The result is a big, bold, juicy single malt whisky with notes of plump sultanas, salted toffee & dark chocolate, summed up by the Head Distiller as "dark cherry ripe in a glass". We couldn't have described it better. 618 bottles make up the release at 59% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. *May contain a trace of dairy from the stout cask maturation.

Other reviews... “Absolutely delicious and has a lot going on.. This has more depth of flavour and slightly bigger mouthfeel than the first Stout Cask edition and as that was my favourite release from Waubs Harbour, that’s saying something. Even though it has an ABV of 59% there’s no alcohol burn.. They got it spot on.” - Ian Allinson, loyal customer.

Notes from the producers... Nose: Salted toffee, well aged tawny, cinnamon, star anise, creamy bittered stout. Palate: Salted toffee, caramelised waffle cone, woody sultana, citrus orange with the bitterness of the dark chocolate. Finish: Evolving aged woody port bouncing off the dark chocolate bitterness. Think dark cherry ripe.

2016 Claxton's Exploration Series Mannochmore 7 Year Old Single Cask Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $119. 99
    Bottle
    $1439.88 Dozen
    ABV: 50%

This Mannochmore has all of the heathery notes that you would expect, with the Moscatel barrique contributing honey and sweet oak. Light aromas of sheepskins, tea biscuits and ripe Jonathan apples lead into a medium-bodied and medium-sweet delivery with gentle peppers and a wavering beeswaxiness, the latter more salient towards the finish. The wax is a surprise, especially for such a young whisky. Clynelish fans should find this appealing. 50% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered. Tasted from a 50ml sample.

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Sweet heather notes with honeycomb, wax and shortbread. Palate: More waxy-honey flavours, herbal with dry oak notes. Finish: Short finish with sweet oak and honey.

Intense but bunchy nose with a rich, supple palate that finishes long and expansive.

This release brings together Bannockburn’s entire spectrum of Pinot vineyards. The 2024 includes fruit from Olive Tree Hill, planted in 1976, 10 Rows (1991), Stuart Block (1997), Anns Block (2004) and the close-planted De La Terre block planted in 2007. All the sites lie in volcanic loam and dark clay over a limestone base and are planted to various clones, mainly MV6 with a smattering of the Dijon (or Bernard) clones. Fruit from each block fermented separately, with approximately 20% bunches included and a small portion undergoing carbonic maceration. The wine was pressed to hogsheads and puncheons (25% new) for 10 months’ maturation.
Dark red core with black shaded edges and a red to dark red hue. The nose is intense but at the same time very bunchy with dried clove infused aromas of dark cherry and strawberry trailed by some smoked meat, forest floor and spicy dried herb notes. Rich supple dark cherry and strawberry fruits are seductively layered across the palate with complexing elements of dried clove, bramble, rhubarb, smoked meat, forest floor and spice lending further interest. Concentrated and powerful it has polished tannins. Lingering through the long expansive conclusion are dried clove and spicy smoked meat characters.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

All the herbs and spices, of course, but the shells of nuts, woodsmoke, a chicory element and whispers of both black coffee and black tea, all of which swirl around sound, sure-footed cherry-berry fruit flavours. This wine is as complex as it is assured, its sinewy tannin finessed into place, its flavours cascading out through the finish. This will age beautifully, and is best consumed with at least another few years under its belt. Drink 2027-2033+

    Scrumptious benchmark Soave.

The Pieropan winery is in the heart of the Classico zone and dates back to 1890. Leonildo ‘Nino’ Pieropan, who sadly passed away in 2018, was the first to show the world just how great Garganega, and Italian white wine, can be. He recognised the importance of terroir early on, acquiring various hillside vineyards and expanding the prestigious Calvarino and La Rocca vineyards, first made as single vineyard crus in 1971 and 1978 respectively.

Today, sons Dario (winemaker) and Andrea (viticulturist) continue the family tradition. The brothers have converted all of their vineyards to organic and are overseeing the new winery being built amongst the vineyards just outside the village. Made mostly from Garganega grapes with the inclusion of 15% Trebbiano di Soave.
Brilliant pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Aromas of pear and red apple skin show plenty of elevation out of the glass with hints of lime, fresh herbs and wet stone also evident. Delicious pear, lime and red apple skin flavours are delivered with ample concentration over a back drop of fresh herb infusions and slatey mineral elements. Crisp acidity with a river stone like feel to the long dry finish.
Drink over the next 2-3 years.

Rich juicy dark plum and aniseed flavours carry a lush feel across the medium to full bodied palate. Spicy vanillin cedar, subtle choc mint, scorched earth and pepper characters stretch across the back half. Underlying sturdy tannins finishing long and succulent.

(tasted 2020) Standard Barry vinification. Fruit is its strong point, supple and balanced blackberry and plum are refreshed by moderate alcohol (and the vintage). Excellent value. Drink by 2030.
