There's 30% whole bunches in the mix here and it comes across as a more complex, textural wine than the 'house' pinot noir. Some darker cherry in the mix, wild strawberry and raspberry coulis, too, with an understory of spice, amaro herbs, dried citrus rind, gamey tones and a dose of earthiness. It's got a lovely minerally palate presence, tannins powdery and compact, the tail long, slender and lingering with spice, stone and red fruits. Drink by 2036.

Medium to full in body, the palate is flush with succulent blackberry, liquorice, dark plum and black cherry fruits. Sourced off old vines planted almost 70 years ago on red-veined, iron-rich quartz soils. If the winemaker's intent is to deliver something expressive of place, he succeeds, but '23 brings an added level of sophistication. It is one beautifully nuanced young shiraz with a big future. All class in blackberry and cassis, florals and baking spices, stone and mineral, earth and gentle pepper. It is early days but deceptively firm tannins are in place; have confidence in them for long-term ageing. Utterly compelling. Drink by 2035.

My good mate used to live in the house next to the Slade vineyard. I've wandered these vines quite a few times with a Cooper's Pale in my hand; the vines are epic, gnarly old beasts, some of the best. Pure satsuma plum fruits daubed with souk-like spice along with hints of gingerbread, pomegranate, cola, char siu, biltong, dried citrus rind, some amaro herbs and an expression of blood orange. It's no airy, fragrant style. There's resonance and power here, abundant spice, bright acidity and a solid core of plum and ginger that rolls along nicely. Drink by 2040.

Supple and moreish entry finishing long, fresh and juicy.

Yabby Lake’s second label, Red Claw, regularly delivers great value across the range. The 2024 season brough 'La Nina' weather conditions for the third year in a row. It was a fine and early ripening vintage with low yields and superb quality. Produced with the inclusion of 10% whole bunch fruit the wine was matured in French oak puncheons for 10 months.
Red to dark red colour with black shaded edges and a light red hue. Fragrant dark cherry, violet, strawberry and anise aromas stream out of the glass with whiffs of forest floor and spicy cedar also evident. Hampden Estate Great House Distillery Edition 2024 Release Pure Single Jamaica Rum (700ml)

    "a total banger... Another killer." - drinkhacker.com

Renewed every year since 2019, Hampden's 2024 'Great House' marks the sixth opus in a series that pays tribute to the distillery’s feature building, constructed in 1779 by the Stirling family and still standing in its original form. Traditionally used to hold barrels until the 20th century, today it's become the main place of reception. The new rum bearing its name departs from previous releases, being a blend of several marques instead of just two, and sourced from three different vintages (50% 3 Year LFCH 2021, 20% 4 Year LFCH 2020, 15% 6 Year HGML 2018 & 15% 3 Year DOK 2021 - the latter fermented to the highest legal ester limit in Jamaica, i.e. 1500-1600 grams per hectolitre of alcohol.) Molasses and dunder (residue from previous runs) were distilled in a double retort pot still with full-term tropical maturation taking place in x-Bourbon barrels. If you're a fan of full-bodied single malts, there's no reason why funky, high-ester Jamaicans like this shouldn't be in your cabinet. The flavours may be more exotic, but the overall sensory experience is comparable. As per the last edition, Great House 2024 lands just shy of the historic 100 proof and allocations remain meagre. 57% Alc./vol.

Other reviews... Hampden‘s end-of-year seasonal rum release is here, as always providing a powerful look at the very best that this essential Jamaican distillery can produce and blend. The sixth edition is, as always, a different blend of rums than in prior years (this one hails from three different vintages), but it’s still a total banger. Aromas of torched, almost burnt pineapple find a happy companion in elements of grassy saltwater marsh and a dusting of gunpowder that’s on the verge of being ignited. The palate keeps the fires burning by pairing lit matchsticks with fresh papaya and guava, with a swath of citrus peel expressed across the top. The finish reminds me more of cotton candy than fruit (tropical or otherwise) or other sweeteners, hinting at Bubble Yum and winding down with a touch of almond butter, studded with raisins. Another killer. - drinkhacker.com

...I gave it a 10 cause at nose (and in the mouth) it's incredibly rich, long and powerfull. It's as funky as a great Caribbean rum should be but it's not too aggressive so you don't really feel the abv. What I loved about this edition, is the intense fruit smells you get as soon as you open the bottle and (my taste) the strong dried apricot feeling. - rumratings.com

Notes from the producers... Nose: Full with a lot of tension. Mint, ripe mango and dry earth form a subtle and precise first sequence of aromas. Quince jelly, bramble jam and orange marmalade then set a richer tone. Palate: Clear and lively. The flavour palette is at first abundantly tropical (coconut, mango, passion fruit) and matches the nose perfectly. Alternating between warm and refreshing sequences, it offers a taste of chocolate drops, fragments of slate and mint tea. Finish: Rich and invigorating. The intense finish lingers on herbaceous (Havana cigar) and peppery tones. Diverse infusions of red fruits and marshmallow bring freshness. Increasingly rich, the finish ends on cranberry and raisin.

Founded in 1753 Hampden Estate has been distilling rum for almost three centuries in the Trelawny Parish, historically known as the grand cru of Jamaican rum. Renowned throughout the world for its full, intensely flavorful rums, Hampden Estate has always produced quintessential, heavy pot still pure single rums, using unique methods that guarantee its remarkable aromas and truly exceptional taste. Since 2009, the distillery started ageing its rums on site, in the tropical climate of Jamaica.

This Vine Vale-sourced grenache recently nabbed the 'Best Grenache' and 'Best Single-Vineyard Wine' at the Barossa Wine Show. It's pretty easy to see why. It has a lovely composition, all savoury red and dark berry and cherry fruits with hints of raspberry coulis, gingerbread, cola, earth, violets, souk-like spice, dried hay and purple floral tones. There is an airy sense of detail to the wine's component parts; easy to parse and easier to drink with a bright line of acidity propelling the wine forwards to a finish that shows grace and a spiced, red berry, creamy textural flourish on the finish. Drink by 2031.

We now talk of a ‘modern’ style of grenache, so as to redefine and separate the grape from its old self. This old vine grenache falls into that new category neatly. The modern style essentially brings the fruit forward and pushes back on the oak. Here, the fruit off old vines is allowed to sing: cherry, roasted plum, pepper, cherry nougat, raspberry bon bon and liquorice aromas. The grape’s natural confection notes are given a voice – just a little – working with red berried and dark fruits while a lively, persistent spiciness ensues. This spice-fuelled red wine just goes and goes led by juniper, clove, rosemary and red liquorice, running long through to the finish with a touch of savouriness for added interest. Drink 2023-2036.

There is so much to love in this Grenache. It has boundless energy and life in it, as witnessed by the array of fruits and savoury characters on display: strawberry (ripe like ice cream topping), raspberry, boysenberry, red cherry, liquorice and violets. The palate is silky and juicy, with chewy tannins and a dusty mouthfeel. While it’s great by itself, it comes alive even more with food; I had it with steak and it cut right through the fat and protein. A beautiful wine that will keep developing for a long time.

A vibrant and youthful purple in the glass. Really pretty and lifted aromas of dried flowers, blueberry, red cherry, graphite, anise and sweet spice. The palate has absolute drinkability and charm. Chock full of fleshy blue fruits, creamy oak, sweet spice and bramble. Textured tannins and lively acidity deliver shape and cut. Delicious!

Fresh and juicy finishing long, dry and slippery textured.

Drawing on Tahbilk estate plantings of Grenache and Mourvèdre the fruit for this moreish Rose is picked early to retain freshness and delicacy, with the grapes crushed and pressed with as little oxygen contact as possible to preserve the fresh fruit characters. A technique favoured in Provence is then used to increase texture and mouthfeel, by mixing the cold juice (including the pulp and solids) with nitrogen gas briefly each day over four days. The wine is then racked to produce clear juice and fermented with a specific Rosé yeast.
Produced from a blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvedre. Vibrant damask pink tinged colour. Leaping out of the glass are aromas of raspberry, strawberry and pomegranate followed by some musk and light spice notes. Fresh and juicy, raspberry, strawberry and pomegranate fruits fill the mouth. Lively acidity lends an energetic feel with notions of musk and spice extending through the long, dry, slippery textured finish.

Excellent textural volume and intensity, finishing long and scrumptious.

"Bonkers, but I love it: the smokiness is just a suggestion, the warmth from a cigar..." - malt-review.com

Other reviews... An unusual vintage bottling of Old Pulteney, in that maturation occurred in a mix of American bourbon casks and Spanish sherry casks that previously held heavily-peated whisky. The nose opens with a whiff of ozone; then lemon, vanilla, and coconut appear, along with fleeting wood smoke. Intense tropical fruitiness merges with milk chocolate, lemon sorbet, and lively spices on the palate. Spicy milk chocolate with a citric and softly peaty tang in the finish. 88 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...On the nose: funky! Now that’s interesting. Some fantastic dried fruits – cranberries, sultanas, quite sharp too. Also a wonderful Cabernet Sauvignon kind of note, with black fruits, tobacco and black tea. Strawberry jam. Heather honey. Cherries now. Golden syrup sponge cake. In the mouth: Bonkers, but I love it: the smokiness is just a suggestion, the warmth from a cigar; nutmeg, oranges, heather honey, cranberries, blackcurrants. That is outrageous fun. Nicely oily too, and the dried fruits become just a fraction more cloying towards the herbal, honeyed finish. - malt-review.com

The Sommet Shiraz block is a small 0.6ha block, consisting of 35 rows, and 5000 vines. This close planted block was configured with 1.6m row spacings and 0.75m between each vine. This block was planted at the most elevated point of our vineyard, on a steep south/west facing slope below the ridgeline of the Mount Camel range, on deep Cambrian era decomposed greenstone rock formed over 500 million years. Fermented in small open fermenters with 10% fermented as whole bunches. 18 days on skins. Pressed to 1-2 year old 600L demi-muids and barriques. The wine remained in barrel for 8 months prior to bottling.
This wine is a powerhouse and a superb combination of excellent fruit and expert winemaking. Aromas abound from the glass, sitting almost squarely between the primary and tertiary realms – mulberry, blackberry, wild strawberry, dried red and black fruits, earth, graphite – and just a touch of cedary wood from the relatively short time in oak. On the palate, you’ll be met with plush flavours and a sumptuous, teeth-gripping mouthfeel from the finely integrated tannins, with a length that lingers. “Sommet” is French for “summit”, and this wine is the pinnacle of the Tellurian range, worth every penny and with the potential to deliver the goods for many years to come still. If you’ve ever wondered why Heathcote is so revered for its Shiraz, drinking this wine will well and truly answer that question.

There's a lot to like here. Bright sour cherry and plum fruits, a touch of lemon zest in there too, with hints of fine spice, wildflowers, redcurrant jelly, red licorice and earth. A sapid and appley pure acid line that whips that juicy fruit into shape and a powdery cloud of tannin offering gentle savoury support. It's a pretty drinkable proposition and super value. Drink by 2029.

Brilliant pale straw colour with a distinct greenish tinge around outskirts and watery hue. Intense lychee and rosewater aromas intermix with musk, hints of honeysuckle and ginger. Rich luscious lychee, ripe pear and honeysuckle flavours engulf the palate with notions of Turkish delight and ginger spice lying underneath. An unoaked red blend of 56/37/7% grenache/mataro/shiraz that always hits the button for me, bringing back memories of trips to the Barossa and how I was drawn to this easy-drinking style in the early 2000s. Plums, mulberries, charcuterie, spice, dried citrus rind, pressed flowers, crushed stone and earth. Harmonious and savoury, it's just lovely drinking. Drink by 2034.

Sons of Eden is a partnership between winemaker Corey Ryan and viticulturist Simon Cowham who both learnt their trades in the vineyards and cellars of Eden Valley. Their labels Romulus and Remus come from the fable of the legendary founders of Ancient Rome. These twins were abandoned at birth and reared by a she-wolf. Romulus murdered his twin Remus in a fit of rage over the naming of Rome, the city which both had built. Legend presents Romulus (Barossa Valley) as the stronger, more powerful of the brothers, while Remus (Eden Valley) was more refined, focused and elegant.
Fruit was sourced from the Nuriootpa, Light Pass and Moppa sub regions of the Barossa Valley with vines aged 80 plus years old. Maturation took place in French oak hogsheads of which 45% were new for a period of 18 months.

Dense, concentrated and velvety, this is top line Barossa Shiraz at its seductive best.

Magnificent inky black core with a very deep dark red black hue. Wafting from the glass with great potency are seductive aromas of dark plum, blackberry and liquorice which marry into some vanillin oak, mocha, subtle earthy fennel and spice notes. Rich, powerful and opulently layered, lavish blackberry, dark plum and liquorice fruits saturate every corner of the weighty palate. Weaving their way across the back half are vanillin oak, mocha, subtle earth and spicy fennel elements. Dense and concentrated it has velvety tannins and an exceptionally long finish that exudes flamboyance.

Rich black fruits with an opulent yet chewy feel concluding long and juicy within a robust frame.

Valerie Chaume started Chaume-Arnaud when she was just 23 years old, renting 4.5 hectares of vineyards from her family. With her husband Philippe joining her in 1989, they expanded the cellar. Situated in the northern part of Cotes du Rhone villages, Vinsobres is one of the most northerly Crus in the Southern Rhone and sits at a high altitude of 400 to 450 meters, higher even than the highest vineyard in Gigondas.
The 2020 Vinsobres is made up of 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Cinsault, and 10% Mourvèdre. The fruit is mainly sourced from the high plateau and south-facing stony, limestone clay soil. Hand-picked fruit is de-stemmed, crushed, and fermented using only natural yeasts, with gentle elevage for three weeks after which it is matured in concrete tanks.
Deep dark red black colour with a dark red hue. Black raspberry and liquorice aromas rise from the glass followed by some black cherry, scorched earth, herbs du Provence and peppered meat notes. Rich black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry fruits engulf the mouth with infusions of herbs du Provence, scorched earth and pepper on the underside. Opulent yet chewy feel with a ripe sturdy tannin structure. Concludes long and juicy within a robust frame.

Great freshness, purity and definition on the nose, with a rising aerial impression. Smooth tannins and a velvety, approachable style, with a shining beam of acidity running through it to the long finish. This feels authentically Vinsobres. Vineyards on pebbly clay limestone slopes, grown at 250-420m. Hand-harvested, destemmed, fermented with indigenous yeasts then matured for 20 months in concrete. 15% Cinsault completes and leavens the blend.

All killer, as they say … The quiet power in this is something to behold – a wine of gravitas and grace. It comes in a little darker of fruit this year, though not heavy with it. Dried olive, black cherry, violet, blueberry, ground coffee, a certain sultry floral and spicy feel, with an undercurrent of nori and iodine. A cuvee of wines that are 40% from Ruppertsberg and 60% from Wachenheim, mostly from young vineyards. From biodynamically grown grapes. Vegan. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

A multiregional blend that successfully melds the contrasting characters of shiraz from the Hunter Valley, Hilltops and Canberra District. This barrel selection has resulted in a supremely well-balanced red that is supple, effortless and beautifully flowing. There is a melange of dark cherry fruit, aromatic spice and a little sweet vanilla. The palate is soft yet vibrant, with impressive length and satisfying intensity. Drink by 2026.

Gloriously decadent, voluptuously textured and explosive, this is pure seduction in a glass.

Produced from a blend of 98% Shiraz and 2% Viognier, Torbreck’s Run Rig is modelled on the Northern Rhone appellation of Cote Rotie’s wines. Fruit was sourced from the Lyndoch, Rowland Flat, Moppa, Ebenezer, Light Pass and Greenock districts of Barossa Valley with maturation taking place in a combination of new (50%) and older French barriques for a period of 30 months.
Spectacular colour featuring an ultra dense, inky black heart along with an equally deep black dark red hue. Intoxicating the olfactory senses are soaring aromatics of dark to black plum, liquorice, dark chocolate and vanillin oak. Earthy mocha, fennel and spice notes ensue. Extravagantly rich and voluptuous, the luxurious palate is overwhelmed by a tidal wave of dark to black plum, liquorice, blackberry liqueur and dark chocolate fruits. Mocha, subtle apricot, vanillin oak, scorched earth and spicy pepper elements sit in the background. Possessing explosive power and out of this world concentration, it has velvety tannins and a plush, skyscraper finish that seemingly never ends.
Drink over the next 8-10 years.

A deeply perfumed and lifted release. Aromas of blackberries, dark chocolate, violets, iodine, porcini mushrooms, fresh herbs and an earthy, ferrous undertone. The palate is full-bodied with finely tuned tannins and a luscious and seamless mouthfeel. There is much complexity and refinement, with a high level of fruit quality. Built for the ages. Drink or hold.

The 2022 RunRig had 2% Viognier added to the Syrah after barrel maturation, from the current vintage. I've clarified this with winemaker Ian Hongell, because my incorrect memory ran toward skins only. Glad I asked. Aromatically, the wine is so fresh and detailed; it hints at latent power and intense concentration, but it doesn't overbear on this point. On the palate, the wine has everything we could hope for—intense, balanced red fruit, a splay of ductile tannins and such a light fluffiness to the profile that I find it most appealing indeed. The discussion here today is regarding the comparison to the great 2021 vintage. It was a freak, out-of-the-box year that blessed producers with a spot-free growing season, good yields and excellent quality fruit. The wines, for the most part, will endure through the decades with grace and ease. The 2022s are tighter, fluffier, more fruit forward and, in my opinion, slightly more delicious, but over the long term, backing the 2021s to go the distance seems the blue-chip option. We can discuss this again in 20 years (2045) when that answer will have become more clear. In the words of Ferris Bueller, "Life moves pretty fast." I love this wine today. It's a superstar. 15.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork and wax. Drink 2025-2042.

I guess you could call the RunRig a modern Barossa classic. 98/2% shiraz/viognier, it's an epic wine, a solid plinth of black and blues fruits deeply etched with exotic spice and earth. Hints of clove, star anise, Old Gold chocolate, licorice, pan juices, earth, dried meats, rose petals, black tea and graphite. Unctuous with great length of flavour and fine, silty tannins suffusing through the wine, it's a study in power and purity, light and shade and all that is great about ancient Barossa shiraz vines. Another great RunRig release. Drink by 2045.

Dingle Celtic Series Conocht an Earraigh Single Malt Irish Whiskey (700ml)
    IRELAND
    $199. 99
    Bottle
    $2399.88 Dozen
    ABV: 50.5%

Part of Dingle Distillery's "Celtic Wheel of the Year" series. This one celebrates the spring equinox, known as "Cónocht an Earraigh" in Irish, and is aged in first-fill bourbon casks with a Cabernet Sauvignon finish. Anticipate aromas of ripe plums, blackberries, toasted almonds, and muscovado sugar, with flavours of rich red fruits, subtle spice, gingerbread and toffee. Triple distilled and bottled at 50.5% Alc./vol.

Other reviews... A very drinkable Dingle, quite laid-back. Getting a wine barrel finish really good is not that easy, and often - in my opinion - maturing in such a barrel does not necessarily give it more depth, but on the contrary ensures that the whiskey becomes lighter and more floating.
Fortunately, this is not the case here; at most, it could be that the fruity notes are more emphasized in the nose than usual.

Loaded Barrel Small Batch Series Oloroso Barrel Single Malt Australian Whisky (500ml)
    Melbourne, Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $139. 99
    Bottle
    $1679.88 Dozen
    ABV: 50%

An antique Spanish Oloroso barrel has been used for full maturation here. The dry, oxidatively aged sherry results in a darker, richer, and nuttier wine compared to other sherries, bestowing some of that goodness to the final whisky. 50% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... It's textured and mouth-coating with bold notes of dried fruits, plum jam, and sweet cherries in syrup. Mid-palate reveals deeper tones of bittersweet dark chocolate, espresso, and walnuts, all wrapped in velvety tannins from the oak. There’s a refined dryness that keeps the richness in balance, evoking old sherry bodegas and seasoned wood that’s smoother than a jazz sax solo.

Dingle Celtic Series Grainstad an Gheimhridh Single Malt Irish Whiskey (700ml)
    IRELAND
    $199. 99
    Bottle
    $2399.88 Dozen
    ABV: 50.5%

Matured in first-fill Bourbon casks followed by an extended finish in Tawny Port casks, this, the fifth release in the 'Celtic Wheel of the Year' series honours the ancient celebration of Grianstad an Gheimhridh, the winter solstice. Grianstad translates to ‘the stopping of the sun’ and the port finishing ties in with the label's theme, evoking the dark of night drawing in. 50.5% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... Nose: Ice cream soda, blackcurrant jelly, banana carmel, pomegranate, cinnamon toast and warm ginger. Taste: Red berry fruits, dark chocolate, warm cloves, creamy soft fudge. Finish: The spice mellow leaving a lingering sweetness on the tip of the tongue.

Dingle Celtic Series Lunasa Single Malt Irish Whiskey (700ml)
    IRELAND
    $199. 99
    Bottle
    $2399.88 Dozen
    ABV: 50.5%

A second limited edition from Dingle's "Wheel of the Year" series. This particular release is inspired by the Celtic festival of Lúnasa, which marks the beginning of the harvest season. The whiskey is triple distilled, matured in bourbon casks, and finished in x-Widow Jane bourbon barrels. 50.5% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... Nose: Ripe red berries, warm salted caramel, lemon sherbet and creamy butter fudge. Taste: Barley sugar with a pinch of spice and hints of dark chocolate with raspberries. Finish: Ginger and spice create a warm glow and slowly leaves dark fruits and caramel notes.
