Edition No. 2 follows on from the first edition, originally offered in 2015. This time the whisky employs a marketing concept that's currently in vogue: The "collaborative effort" (think Glenfiddich's Project XX). Master blender Bob Dalgarno has teamed up with Spanish chefs Joan, Josep and Jordi Roca and each contributor has handpicked a cask:
Joan Roca, head chef, picked 1st and 2nd fill Diego Martin casks for its rich green wood and toffee flavours.
Jordi Roca, pastry chef went with 1st and 2nd fill Vasyma American Oak casks to include light vanilla and citrus notes.
Joseph Roca, the sommelier, selected 1st fill Jose Miguel Martin casks with spicy ginger notes.
Bob Dalgarno picked 1st fill Tevasa cask, which conveys dried fruit and sherry notes.
This combination of sherry puncheons, butts and refill hogsheads has resulted in a "deliciously floral and fruity whisky with notes of tropical fruit, black pepper, liquorice and brandy snaps."

This limited release was aged in seven cask types—both American and European oak in a variety of sizes—from four Spanish bodegas: Vasyma, Diego Martin, Jose Miguel Martin, and Tevasa. Citrus fruits, ginger, black pepper, light smoke, and rubbery leather on the nose. Ultimately, carnations. The palate is rich, nutty, and sweet, with malt, toffee, sticky sherry, maraschino cherries, milk chocolate, and gentle spice. Long in the finish, with spices and creamy cocoa.

... When you have no age, you ought to come up with a name, and a number’s just easy to find, isn’t it. It’s strange though that they wouldn’t have called it ‘The Spanish Edition’ or something, as this NAS vatting was done in collaboration with some Spanish chefs. And why not? Now I’ve been to some of those restaurants (such as the Rocas’s), and I can assure you that they’re totally great. Colour: gold. Nose: malt and sherry, obviously. Ovaltine, raisins, oak, vanilla, barley, toffee, chocolate, and a little mocha, then rather tangerine jam and fruity cornflakes. Fruity Loops, that’s their name if I remember well. Well done so far. Mouth: okay, this is very good. Big malty arrival, totally in sync with the nose, then many full-flavoured pastries, cakes, and certainly some ginger cake. A spoonful of thick ale, or perhaps Guinness (I know that’s a little un-diplomatic). Finish: long, firm, rather thick. Ginger cake and raisin rolls and some welcome lemon in the aftertaste. Comments: I like it that Macallan would collaborate with chefs and starred restaurants. ...Stunningly pretty burnt sienna/bronze color; flawlessly pure. Oh man, there’s oloroso sherry and honey written all over the very first aromatics, along with crème caramel, English toffee, and baked ham studded with cloves; secondary whiffs after more air contact discover delicate scents of dried tropical fruits (pineapple, banana), chestnut puree, cigar box, and pipe tobacco. Entry is surprisingly forward with astringent and trimmed flavors of oaky resins, cinnamon, and green tobacco; midpalate echoes the entry impressions as the flavor profile remains leaner than the aroma had implied it would be yet succulent all the same. Aftertaste sums up the experience nicely by promoting the deftness of the dried tropical fruits laced with dense spicy oak and black pepper. Not the robust Macallan of the Sherry series or even to some extent the Fine Oak series, but a nimble, intensely spiced Mac whose elegance wins the day and the Four Stars.

Other reviews... Distilled in 2001, this year’s release is a departure from recent releases, which were complex and nicely balanced. It’s more aggressive, with tannins and oak dominating, and lacking the body and sweetness to balance it. It’s my least favorite of this year’s offerings. Dark chocolate, toffee, tobacco, and dried fruit round out the palate and offer some comfort. Buffalo Trace Antique Collection 2016.

The average age of this superb Rutherglen fortified is 12 years. Formerly known as Tokay, this fortified is produced from Muscadelle grapes. Translucent deep onion brown amber colour. Toffee top notes are followed by some honey, raisin and molasses aromas. Concentrated and very luscious the palate delivers flavours of honey, toffee and raisins followed by a touch of spice. There’s a touch of heat from the spirit on the finish which is not quite as well integrated as the Muscat. Long aftertaste of honey, toffee and raisin.

Deep onion brown colour, with delicate olive green edges. Superb sniffing, with aromas of caramel, honey, raisins and fine brandy spirit. Rich, luscious palate with flavours of orange marmalade and honeyed raisins, followed by a clean finish and very long aftertaste of toffee, honey, raisins and caramel.

Bottled at a higher than normal strength, the 2017 edition is a marriage of bourbon casks with whiskies aged in second-fill oloroso sherry casks, promising a complex mix of sweet, creamy bourbon notes and rich sherry intertwined with Laphroaig's signature maritime peat. Following the stellar quality of the 2016 (96.5 points Jim Murray), this continues the series with another unmissable Laphroaig.
Tasting note: Brilliant gold. Slow, brooding, drier-styled aromatics, like the calm before the storm... oloroso pokes through the oily peat as smoked almonds, walnut fudge and a little orange zest emerge...The medicinal notes of younger Laphroaig have dissipated; instead, dried herbs, cough lozenge, pipe tobacco, vanilla and earthy peat enter. The malt arrives thick and chewy before a tsunami of salt and pepper, while the finish turns tingling, oily and sweet. Liquorice, cocoa, spent pipe tobacco and maritime freshness overtake the fading oloroso. Delicate but long. Minimal water lengthens the flavour wave, lending a sooty, ashy quality. Fabulously complex and even better after 10-20 minutes breathing. If you're a fan of this distillery, get some. 48.9% Alc./Vol.

Another very tightly constructed 2007 Clarendon Hills Syrah.

The 2007 Syrah Piggott Range offers a kinky, sexy bouquet of earth, bacon, game, incense, and assorted black and blue fruits. A sublime marriage of elegance and power
Totally opaque black dark purple colour with a bright dark purple hue. Delicately perfumed the nose exhibits a refined aromatic profile of violets, freshly crushed blackberries and liquorice followed by vanillin cedar, faint earth and pepper. Supple and rich with an understated concentration the palate is a seamless mesh of blackberries, liquorice, vanillin cedar, subtle dried meats, light earth, spice and pepper. Perfectly integrated velvet smooth tannins. A wine of great finesse with an understated richness and power that builds incrementally across the palate. Exceptionally long blackberry, liquorice, vanillin cedar, subtle dried meats and spicy pepper aftertaste.

Bottle no. 39 of 2200 tells part of the story, but the front label also has in demure typeface 'original 1867 plantings'. This is a ravishing wine with a velvet and satin mouthfeel, and a rainbow of black, purple and blue fruits. Supple tannins are somewhere in the mix, likewise French oak, but don't bother dissecting what is an exquisite wine. As a point of principle, I'm not going to give 100 points for a table wine, but if I were, this would get the nod. Drink by 2054.

Once part of a much larger vineyard that included Chateau Leoville Las Cases and Chateau Leoville Poyferre, Second Growth producer Chateau Leoville Barton now spans 47 hectares and is owned by the same family as Chateau Langoa Barton. In fact, there is no Chateau on the property, and the image on the label is actually that of Langoa Barton where the wines are made. Wines from this property are traditional and sturdy in style, and the best vintages can require decades to reach their peak. Vineyards are planted to 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, and 3% Cabernet Franc.

Like its stablemate Langoa Barton, the 2019 Léoville Barton is a timeless classic, made for patient connoisseurs. Offering up aromas of blackcurrants, plums, pencil shavings and licorice, it's full-bodied, deep and concentrated, its deep core of fruit framed by a chassis of rich, powdery tannin that makes itself felt on the youthfully firm finish. While it's clearly built for the long haul, its structural seamlessness and mid-palate plenitude mark it out as one of the finest wines from this château in recent times. Could it be a more concentrated modern-day version of Anthony Barton's brilliant 1985? Drink 2029-2069.

The 2019 Léoville Barton has a powerful and comparatively rich bouquet with layers of black fruit suffused with minerals - wonderful delineation. This has an effortlessness about it. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, gorgeous satin-like texture, mineral-driven with hints of truffle and white pepper towards the exceedingly harmonious finish. I thought this was outstanding before - now I think it might be a benchmark. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting. Drink 2026-2058.

The flagship 2019 Château Léoville Barton is brilliant, showing both the style of the estate as well as the vintage beautifully. It's never the biggest or richest wine, yet it has a classic, vibrant, structured style that ages beautifully. Pure cassis, black currants, scorched earth, new leather, and graphite are just some of its nuances, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a lively spine of acidity, beautiful overall balance, and a great finish. This textbook Léoville Barton demands a decade of bottle age and will keep for 30-40 years. Drink 2032-2062.

A dark nose here, savoury with animal tones, bramble fruits and leather nuances. The palate is excellent, grippy with tannins that just take hold and coat the mouth but underneath you feel there is such well defined fruit - a core of ripe blackcurrants and liquorice tinges. There is an elegance to this despite the mouthful of creamy tannins that are doing all the talking at the moment. This will be excellent in time. Sumptuous and utterly enchanting. Drink 2029-2045.

Four Pillars wanted to create a gin specifically for the Negroni - something to cut through the Campari and vermouth. And as the Negroni has always been a favourite at Four Pillars, distiller, Cameron MacKenzie jumped at the chance to make the first collaboration in their "Bartender Series" - a tribute to the very definition of a perfectly balanced cocktail.

First, they took their base botanicals and upped the amount of Tasmanian pepperberry leaf and cinnamon. Then they added an exotic West African spice called Grains of Paradise. This is one of the most unusual spices in the world, with clove and sichuan characters. But although very powerful, the spice tends to glow rather than become hot.

They also decided to use organic blood oranges in the botanical basket, as well as some ginger.

Tasting note: Crystal clear. Intense orange sorbet opening develops pith and peel freshness followed by hints of jaffa, white pepper and cut ginger. Creamy, soft textured delivery features early orange peel and later subtle hints of juniper. Excellent balance and freshness. Cough lozenge-like warmth and light jaffa in the fade. 43.8% Alc./Vol.

Castarede is the oldest trading house in the region, established in 1832 by ancestors of the current owners.
The armagnac is produced at Chateau de Maniban, situated in the heart of the Bas-Armagnac region just to the south of Mauleon - d’Armagnac. This edition was distilled in 1978 from Ugni blanc, Folle Blanche, Colombard and Baco 22 A grapes.
Tasting note: Deep brassy gold. Gorgeous purity to the bouquet including notes of stewed orchard fruits, dried fig, vanilla bean, cedar, cigar box and cocoa. Drier style Armagnac with pepper, prune and fig in a finely tannic delivery. Cedary-oak and cigar box run through the aftertaste. Excellent persistence. 40% Alc./Vol.

Increased demand worldwide for premium Bourbon has made the whiskeys of Van Winkle increasingly difficult to source. From time to time we receive very small allocations of this esteemed 107 proof 15 year old expression. It's the only one of the three in the PVW collection bottled at high proof. You get some of the sweetness associated with older Pappy, combined with a punchy, oily body and a good dose of spice. Aside from Jim Murray, the last time any major reviewer was able to sample this was back in 2012. Now it's either too expensive to open or unprocurable - or both.

Sometime recently, the source of this whiskey changed from the now defunct Stitzel-Weller distillery to Buffalo Trace. No matter. This whiskey is still the best of the Van Winkle line. It’s crisp, clean, vibrant, impeccably balanced, and nicely matured. Complex fruit (bramble, candied citrus), caramel, coconut custard, maple syrup, fresh spice (vanilla, warming cinnamon, nutmeg, a dusting of cocoa powder) on a bed of nougat. Outstanding! The newly packaged Lasanta has retained the same ABV of 43% and comes finished in Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez Sherry casks after an initial spell in Bourbon barrels.
Other reviews... Following a decade in bourbon barrels, Lasanta is finished for 2 years in oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. Caramel, milk chocolate, and hazelnuts merge on the nose with the spicy dried fruit and orange notes associated with sherry wood maturation. Spicy sultanas, and damsons on the full, sweet palate, with more caramel, milk chocolate, nutmeg, and oak. The finish is long and smooth, with dark chocolate and wood spices.

[2010 bottling] Gold ochre/polished brass appearance. The opening scents of muted rubber band and pickled onion are a little off key so we'll let this sit. Three minutes after the first pour, the aroma hasn't really budged dramatically except for the addition of spiced raisin cake. Final pass finds the sultana / dried berry characteristics accented. A light and silky entry develops into a semi-sweet ginger, vanilla and raisin cake profile. Some flashes of sulphur. Finishes a little hot with the spicy red fruits persisting and traces of pickled onion in the fade. 89 points 43% Alc./Vol.

Chateau Musar L'Arack de Musar Arak (500ml)

Arack (Arak) is the national drink of Lebanon, Syria and Jordan. It’s made from grapes, and so not surprisingly, most of the wine producers in Lebanon also produce an Arack. The initial pressing is fermented then distilled, and then aged before a second distillation. It’s at this point that the anise is added, then, depending on the maker, it’s distilled a second or third time before it’s aged again. Typically Arack is drier, more intense and precise than most mainstream Ouzo’s or Pastis’. It will also 'louche' (turn milky white) when water is added.

In 1930, at just 20 years old, Gaston Hochar founded Chateau Musar, inspired by Lebanon's 6,000 year winemaking tradition and his travels in Bordeaux. The five year old grape spirit that forms the base of Chateau Musar Arack is made from ancient grape varieties Obaideh and Merwah, indigenous to the mountains of Lebanon and said to be related to Chardonnay and Semillon. Planted between 1920 and 1947 the Obaideh vineyards are in the foothills of the Anti-Lebanon mountains near Ain Arab on stony, chalky soils, while the Merwah vines are on the seaward side of Mount Lebanon in Baqaâta, on calcareous gravels. Yields are very low for these untrained bushvines: 25 hl per hectare. At high altitude (around 1400m) they are still on their own roots, among very few vineyards in the world of this calibre.

Made from five to ten year old grape spirit and distilled four times with anise seeds added at the final distillation, Chateau Musar Arack is 'finished' for between 12 and 24 months in terracotta jars (Roman style ‘amphorae’).
It is usually enjoyed neat as a ‘digestif’. It can also be taken with iced water like a classic pastis: long, cool and refreshing. Arack is a classic match for classic Lebanese ‘mezze’ (small buffet dishes): grilled meats and vegetables, flatbreads, pickles, olives, nuts, carrot sticks, baba ghannouj (aubergine dip), moutabal (aubergine purée), hummus (chickpea dip), shankleesh (spicy goat cheese dip), tabbouleh (parsley and tomato salad), fattoush (salad with crispy bread) or kibbeh (puréed raw meat or minced meat fried in a cracked wheat shell). Arack has also been used to flavour dessert jellies and sorbets and has been know to crop up in a cocktail or two!

Tasting note: Crystal clear with a slightly glycerous appearance. Initial impression is of dipping your nose into a bag of star anise. With aeration a delightful note of fresh liquorice strap emerges. There is also an interesting hint of crushed eucalyptus leaf. Entry is soft and disarming to the point of being neutral. By midpalate the profile asserts itself as a juicy, semi sweet liquorice strap burst that's intensified by a tingly, spicy flourish. Excellent balance at high ABV. Finishes clean and dry with the spiciness persisting. Exceptionally long liquorice strap aftertaste. Delicious. 53%Alc./Vol.

Located just on the outskirts of Bardstown is 'Kentucky Bourbon Distillers' (aka Willett) , the company behind famous brands like 'Old Bardstown' and 'Johnny Drum'. The distillery was originally built by the Willett family who brought their distilling knowledge with them from England to the American Colonies in the early 1600's. The company continued to operate until the early 1980s when the Willett’s realised they'd made their mark on the Bourbon industry and it was now time for them to retire. On July 1, 1984, Even G. Kulsveen (pronounced Evan), a native of Hamar, Norway, and son-in-law to Thompson Willett, purchased the property from the Willett’s and formed 'Kentucky Bourbon Distillers, Ltd'.

Other reviews... On the nose the orange aromas abound with sherberty lemon myrtle in the background. To taste the orange and juniper are at the fore before more citrus zest notes from the coriander and lemon myrtle evolve. There is a good dose of warmth and spice on the lengthy finish. It’s well-balanced, with a great mouthfeel....Lorelle’s uses fractional distillation (all the botanicals are distilled separately before being blended together) and grape based spirit ( Melbourne Gin company also uses this base) which gives a great mouth feel and a super neutral canvas that allows the botanicals to shine.... It works well in a gin and tonic garnished with rosemary – fennel would also work. Try it with soda as this would open out the flavours even more.

The five prestigious areas of Cognac are Petite Champagne, Grand Champagne, Borderies, Fins Bois and Fins Ordinaire. Since an array of fruit juices were to be used, it was imperative to select the perfect balance of cognac from each region to complement the HPNOTIQ experience. Beginning with Petite champagne for its elegance. A measure of Fins bois was added for delicacy. Finally, a portion of Borferies was combined for exceptional floral bouquet. In order to obtain the most appealing aromas, our distinctive blend is distilled very slowly in small pot stills. Finally, the Cognac is reduced from cask strength down to 34 proof (17% alcohol by volume), the optimal strength for enjoying HPNOTIQ. This process is gradual and precise so as to retain the cognac’s velvety smoothness qualities.
Now for the vodka. Ultimately, the quality of vodka is based upon its ingredients and distillation method. We begin by selecting the finest grains and the purest spring water from France. Under the watchful eye of the cellar-master, the spirit is hand crafted in small batches. To eliminate impurities, our vodka is carefully triple distilled in a traditional copper pot still. AN OLD FAVOURITE RETURNS TO AUSTRALIA. After innumerable requests (with some customers begging us to bring this obscure liqueur back), we decided to import it ourselves. Irish Mist is a variety of Whisky liqueur, and claims to be both older and superior to any Scottish version! The unique recipe is reportedly over 1200 years old and based on a classic blend of clover and heather honey, exotic herbs and mellow Irish Spirits. According to lore, the liqueur was all but lost until Desmond Williams of the Tullamore Distillery came across a manuscript containing the recipe that magically appeared in the 1940s. Mr. Williams took this and adapted it, using Irish whiskey as the base.
Tasting note: Deep tawny in colour with a copper rim. Sweet herbs & citrus peels on the nose. Wonderfully deep palate replete with rich honeyed, raisined flavours and a thick, luscious mouthfeel. Christmas pudding in a bottle! The sweet spirit rises in the finale and warms the heart. Good balance - not cloyingly sweet. A worthy counterpart to its Scottish 'cousins'. 35% alc/vol
Other reviews... Of all the honey-flavored liqueurs I’ve tried, Irish Mist is probably the mildest around. It’s Irish whiskey imbued with honey and “natural aromatic spices,” but the flavor is quite muted. A touch of honey, maybe some cinnamon and cloves, all on a very mild whiskey base. Other reviews... My “wine” of the weekend, though, was Nocturne, a new amaro (or bitter fortified digestif liqueur) from Victorian vermouth producer Maidenii. This incredibly complex, startlingly original drink started life as a barrel-aged rose, with layers of flavour then built up through additions of botanicals such as quandong, pepper, munthurri berries and black truffle, and a mouth-hugging bitterness provided by gentian and angelica. It’s very limited — just one barrel, or 300 bottles of this first release were produced... it’s one of the most remarkable fluids to have flowed across my tongue all year. - Max Allen

In 1817, the future King George IV of England asked Hennessy to supply him with a “very superior, old and pale cognac”. By the end of the 19th century, V.S.O.P, as it had become known, had firmly established its reputation among the nobility. The product of a gradual blend of over 60 eaux de vie taken from the four leading vineyards in the Cognac region, V.S.O.P is slowly matured in old barrels from which most of the tannin has been extracted. The highly aromatic cognac begins with fruits, but they have moved into the dried fruit territory with raisins, apricots and dates. Floral aromas are strong as well leaning towards violets. A mulled wine aroma lingers about with the baking spices of cinnamon and clove standing out in particular. As you move into the palate, there's a tangy liveliness to the brandy with the notes from the aroma still present. There's a noticeable sweetness present, but it isn't cloying. There's just enough of a bitterness at the finish to make it interesting. This is a good step-up for beginners just getting into cognac as it isn't just all about fruit. 85 points - distiller.com

In 1986, Eric Dhondt and Edith Grellet decided to stop selling off grapes to negociants and started Dhondt-Grellet. Their focus on farming translated into honest Champagnes from great holdings across the Côte des Blancs. Now with their son, Adrien, assuming a larger role, they are refocusing their efforts and producing some of the best Champagnes they ever have. Nowadays the company is lead by Eric and Adrian.
The vineyard is situated primarily in Grands and Premiers Crus of Cote des Blancs namely Cramant, Chouilly, Cuis but also Sézanne for their Chardonnays. They also cultivate some Pinot Noir in the Vallée the la Marne. Mainly located in mid hillsides on easy to work, very lightweight calcareous soils, their plots enjoy an outstanding location and a southeast exposure. The average age of the vines is 40 years. They also have their own cellars in Flavigny to age the wines before bringing them on the market. Les Terres Fines is their 100% chardonnay from premier cru vineyards from Cuis.

Disgorged in June 2021, the NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru Les Terres Fines (2018) offers up aromas of ripe citrus fruit, green apple, fresh bread, peach and toasted nuts. Three huge rainwater tanks supply the distillery. Brett comments, "Today's rain is tomorrow's whisky. The salt is very important to us, it makes the rainwater sweet rather than salty."

[Cask 322 tasted] Spring Bay Bourbon Cask is one of the primary examples in Tasmania of how quality ex-bourbon casks combined with good, clean, single malt spirit can really shine in the Australian context. This is bursting with bright, floral fruitiness. There are notes of honeydew, geranium and tinned peaches in abundance, with plenty of bright vanilla from American oak. If you’re looking for buttery biscuits and rich malt character, this isn’t going to tick that box, but that light, floral character has a lot in common with Irish and Japanese whiskies. There’s good texture and grip through the palate, which retains its inherent lightness, making this an extremely drinkable single malt whisky, if not the world’s most complex. The 2016 Cantenac Brown seems to have grown aromatically since I last tasted it a few months ago. More complex than I remember, this offers a cornucopia of scents: blackberry, briary, cedar and a lovely mintiness that recalls Palmer. The palate is silky smooth with great depth and delineation, satin-like, multi-layered, precocious black fruit laced with black pepper, tea leaves and cloves, all fanning out gloriously towards the finish. Equipped with two gorgeous Holsten stills, Brookvale locals, David Whittaker and Vanessa Wilton are driven to create spirits that capture the diversity of Australian botanicals, exploring above and below the ocean to create that something special. Presently offering two vodkas, a White Dog malt and this contemporary-styled gin, the spirits are meticulously monitored during distillation and rather than computer controlled cuts, Manly rely on well-tuned noses to capture as much flavour as possible.
Produced from a wheat base, botanicals for the gin include Sea Lettuce, Pepper Leaf, Anise Myrtle, Finger Lime and Orange Peel. The odd botanical here is obviously the marine addition. It was inspired by Elijah Holland, head chef at "Powder Keg", a restaurant and gin bar in Sydney. He recommended it as a novel 'North Beach coastal influence' for the gin's profile.
Tasting note: Clear with thick tears down the sides of the glass. Excellent aromatic lift includes aromas of pine needle, fresh citrus peel (lemon / lime) and delicate white pepper. Dry, cool-mint confectionary-like flavours (Lifesavers?), followed by muted lime juice and a chalky, lemony finish. Light piney aftertaste. An engaging citrus-led style that will shine in summer cocktails. 43% Alc./Vol.

Small batch bitters are surely making their mark on the cocktail scene, with cocktail enthusiasts and bartenders rediscovering the long lost recipes of the golden era and coming up with new signature flavours which help create the palate of the New Age Cocktail.

While living in San Francisco in early 2007, Avery and Janet Glasser used high proof spirit and a variety of herbs, peels and spices to create what would be their prototype recipe for the Xocolatl Mole Bitters and catalyst for their new venture.

The summer of 2010 marked a dramatic rebirth for Bittermens: winding down previous licensing agreements, striking new partnerships (i.e. The Bitter Truth) developing new products and most importantly, leasing a commercial kitchen. All Bittermens products are now being made by hand at their Brooklyn facility using primarily organic ingredients.

This bitters recipe was conceived when the question was posed whether the company ever considered making Falernum (a sweet syrup containing flavors of almond, ginger and/or cloves, and lime). Since the company do not indulge in cordial production, it was decided to see if it was possible to create a bitter designed with tiki cocktails in mind. The end result incorporates flavours of Cinnamon and Allspice with a strong cast of supporting spice flavors from both the Eastern (Polynesia) and Western (Caribbean) schools of tropical cocktails.

Developed to capitalise on the popularity of the Stolichnaya brand, this is a unique super-premium release produced from 100% grain, using a patented 'freeze-filtration' technique. The first step in Stolichnaya’s reinterpretation of the process is to pass the spirit through a special silver filter upon which the vodka is frozen to -18C. During the freezing, the vodka becomes glycerine-like, and the solubility of different impurities reduces. The liquids density increases causing all the impurities to freeze against the walls of the filtration tanks. These unwanted crystalline substances are then discarded from the distillate resulting in one of the finest and smoothest vodkas on the market today.

Other reviews... Clear. Very neutral aromas of river rocks, faint anise, and custard. A silky, effortless entry leads to a glycerous, dryish medium-to-full body of sweet cream, powdered sugar, talc, and tarragon, and honeyed lemon verbena flavors. In 1865, inspired by the decorative handle of his office window, Maurice Hennessy created the star symbol that he would use to classify his cognacs. Thus was born the Three Star Cognac, better known today as V.S. Hennesey V.S. is a blend of more than 40 eaux de vie from the four premier growing areas of the cognac region. Hennessy V.S has traditionally been enjoyed after a meal, but it is also very popular mixed with ice and soda water, tonic, orange juice or ginger ale, as a long drink.
Tasting note: Brassy gold with gold hue. Moderately aromatic nose yields subtle aromas of dried fruits, old wood and pepper. An off dry, medium to full bodied palate offers flavours of boiled confectionary and dried fruits with a peppery kick, before a drying tannic finish sets in. Reasonable aftertaste of pepper and sweet leather with a touch of caramel and tumeric. Entry level cognac. 40% alc./vol.

(Tasted early 2000s) A magnificent wine! Opaque, with a crimson/purple edge. The nose is filled with aromas of violets, spice and vanilla. The palate is monumental - bigger than some of the 'biggest'. Literally grape concentrate of blackberry and plum. Firm tannins, yet well balanced and supported by the volumes of ripe fruit. Very powerful - mouthfilling - spectacular depth of flavours and aftertaste.

Launched in December 2012, Herno Gin was the most awarded gin at The Gin Masters 2013, which was arranged in London in the end of June 2013. It's an event that has fast become one of the most respected and high profile trade competitions in the industry, attracting many entries from leading brands all over the world. This year 49 gins participated.

It all started in 1999. Jon Hillgren went to London together with a few friends to start working as bartenders. He discovered gin. During the years that followed the discovery evolved in to an interest in gin crafting. After tasting about one hundred gins, academic studies and subsequent visits to distilleries around the world, Jon finally founded Herno Distillery in 2011.

Situated in the village of Dala just outside the City of Härnösand in Ångermanland, Sweden, it is the country's first dedicated gin distillery and the world's northernmost.

Production employs only organic ingredients and none of the gins are chill filtered.
Botanicals include juniper berries from Hungary, Coriander seeds from Bulgaria, hand peeled lemon, Lingon berries from Sweden, Meadowsweet from the United Kingdom, Black Pepper from India, Cassia from Indonesia and fresh Vanilla from Madagascar.

Like its lower proof sibling, this intense, 57% Navy Strength release is hand bottled with each marked with a batch and bottle number. Those who have tried it understand why it was the most awarded at Gin Masters 2013! Very, very limited stocks.

Originally created around 1830 by Antoine Amédée Peychaud, an apothecary from France who settled in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1795. Peychaud’s is a gentian-based bitters, comparable to Angostura bitters, but with a lighter body, sweeter taste and more floral aroma, called for specifically in many cocktails. Try this classic in a Manhattan, Old Fashioned, Whisky Sour or in the signature Sazerac cocktail.

Method:
-Pack an Old-Fashioned glass with ice
-In a second Old-Fashioned glass place the sugar cube and add the Peychaud's Bitters to it, then crush the sugar cube
-Add the Sazerac Rye Whiskey or Buffalo Trace Bourbon to the second glass containing the Peychaud's Bitters and sugar
-Empty the ice from the first glass and coat the glass with the Anise liqueur, then discard the remaining Anise Liqueur
-Empty the whiskey/bitters/sugar mixture from the second glass into the first glass and garnish with lemon peel.

Founded by Becky and Scott Harris in 2009 as the first legal distillery in Loudoun County, Virginia since Prohibition, "Catoctin" (pronounced Ka-TOCK-tin), derives its name from the Indian tribal word "Kittocton" which, legend has it, meant "place of many deer". There's a conscientious pursuit of high quality food and spirits at the distillery where preference is given to organic grain and fruit, sourced locally when possible. Beck Harris heads the team as chief distiller. While many craft distilleries claim the title of 'handmade,' or 'small batch', Catoctin walks the walk. The venture is going from strength to strength with an ever-growing number of significant awards. Catoctin's "Cask Proof" rye results from an "impulsive" selection of used Chardonnay casks, Bordeaux casks and x peach brandy barrels which are used to finish the whisky.
Tasting note: Deep polished copper / thick legs. A five minute bouquet that's relatively closed in the early stages. Peppery spirit recedes with exposure slowly upping the intensity and introducing notes of rice pudding, leather handbag and mint choc-chip cookie. Creamy, soft entry preludes and intense, bittersweet, peppered rye, vanilla and mint chocolate attack. Well balanced, with the mid palate flavours carrying through to a cough lozenge fade. Generous and sweeter styled. 58% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
