Pitch black core with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Heady aromatics of ripe blackberry, liquorice and dark plum waft out of the glass complimented by some vanillin cedar, fennel and peppered earth notes. A rich, silky flow of opulent blackberry, liquorice and dark plum fruits decorate the full bodied palate. Vanillin oak, subtle earthy mocha and peppered fennel characters also chime in. Boasting ample power and a plush textural feel, it has velvet smooth tannins and a long seductive finish.

Produced from 55 year old vines with maturation taking place in a combination of old and new French oak for a period of 17 months. Dense inky black in colour with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Rich and plush yet not overly heavy across the palate, seductive blackberry, liquorice and dark plum fruits are intermeshed with vanillin cedar, subtle earth and pepper elements. A beautifully pure expression of the Boongarrie vineyard from the cracking 2021 Eden Valley vintage. It sits bright magenta-splashed crimson in the glass with lifted aromas of macerated satsuma plum, boysenberry and crunchy blueberry fruits cut with hints of spice, citrus blossom, licorice, chocolate, berry flan, olive tapenade and earth. It sports excellent fruit purity and detail, a mineral-laden acid cadence and a powdery tannin architecture with a real sense of harmony and verve. In my eyes, it's the best release yet from this vineyard. Drink by 2033.

Distilled in a multi-column still at the Epris Distillery, this blend of molasses and cane juice-based rums was summed up by Compagnie des Indes as "sweet and savoury with notes of BBQ sauce & Xérès vinegar." Zero sugar has been added. From a 30ml sample, the aromas need coaxing to get beyond basic scents like balsa wood and hints of molasses. On the palate, the sugars are matched by tingling spices, closing acidic, lean with nipping alcohol. Some sweetness recovers late in the aftertaste, but the lack of definition makes this odd-ball rum feel more like an oak-charged, cask strength Armagnac. 53.2% Alc./vol. Non-chill filtered. 293 bottles produced.
Notes from the bottlers... Nose: rich and powerful, with notes of toffee, fudge and macadamia nuts with strong whiffs of molasses. Mouth: first a salty flavour (salted butter caramel), then grilled meat and dark chocolate. Finish: a sweet bitterness remains all along the tasting right until the end.

Maturation in French puncheons and hogsheads, of which 35% was new. Regular lees stirring and full mlf. Lemon sherbet, dandelion and chamomile flowers. A hint of cantaloupe and papaya. Buddha's hand citrus and tangerine oil. Quite a lot of savoury notes this vintage, cumin, paperbark and cold tea leaf. Mlf shows in its churned butter creaminess, and oak surrounds its tropical and citrus fruit core. Again, this wine over-delivers in value at its price. Drink by 2028.

Described by Vinous Media wine critic Ian D'Agata as the 'DRC of Moscato d'Asti', this is a captivating example of Moscato. A frisky spritz flows through the water coloured base that has a faint greenish tinge around the edges. Fragrant scents of grape juice, pineapple, rosewater and musk leap out of the glass with whiffs of orange blossom also evident. Luscious sultana grape, tropical fruit and musk flavours dance across the energized palate with a light airy feel. Some juicy mango fruits also chime in. Refreshing acidity with a long effervescent finish.

375ml here. Gary Sweet here reporting for duty. A lot of moscato is kind of awful, but the good ones are delightful. Happy to say this falls into the latter category.
Peach iced tea, mint, a slightly savoury almond and nutty edge, some rosewater perfume. It’s sweet but finds balance with a tight cut of acidity, tingly bubbles, and heaven forbid, it also has a gently phenolic grip to it, and again that almost marzipan richness on a finish of good length, with a peach fuzz and white grape freshness to close. Benchmark stuff. Proper moscato. A sugar rush, yes, but so balanced and good to drink. YUM. Drink 2026-2027.

We've only managed to secure a small number of Braevals in the past, so we jumped on this well-aged expression as soon as we saw it. Located in the far south of the Speyside region, Braeval shares the honour of being the joint highest distillery in Scotland, along with Dalwhinnie. The house style is unpeated, light and floral. This is one of 603 bottles released under Signatory's Cask Strength label, charged from a refill Oloroso Sherry butt, distilled in 2000 and bottled in 2023 without chill filtration. 60.4% Alc./Vol.

Silky on entry, espresso and cocoa flavours bring a natural bittersweetness as well as a sense of elegance; The finish is pleasantly drying without compromising length or authentic coffee character. Debuting in the 1980s, these long discontinued bottlings of the Famous Grouse were the real deal, with a good proportion of well-aged Macallan making it into the mix. As you can imagine, the quality of the whisky was high, and reportedly, mostly drawn from x sherry casks. It was also an expensive blended malt to maintain, hence production ceased around the time of this edition in 2007. The contents are matched by a luxurious presentation. 43% Alc./Vol.

Fine Barossa Shiraz which spent eighteen to twenty-four months in oak barrels. The colour is an inky maroon. A beautifully crafted wine with a nose exhibiting notes of chocolate, cassis, blackberries, smoked meats and some deftly handled oak. There is bright acidity here, with exemplary balance and great length. A wine which is dense but dances across the palate. Domaine des Escaravailles Le Ventabren is typically a blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Carignan that is aged in concrete vats for 12 months. The Grenache and Carignan vines are 60 years old whilst the Syrah comes from 30 year old vines.
Deep black dark red colour with a dark red hue. Aromas of black raspberry, black cherry and liquorice flood the nostrils trailed by some scorched earth, herbs du Provence and pepper notes. Rich, concentrated and possessing a muscular structure, the medium to full bodied is awash with black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry fruits. Notions of scorched earth and peppered dried herbs lie underneath. Amply powered it has ripe chewy tannins and a long seductive yet mildly robust finish.

An explosion of passionfruit and gooseberry flavours with crisp acidity and a long racy finish.
The fruit for this wine was machine harvested at night or in the cool of the morning and immediately crushed and pressed. The juice was then fermented with a variety of aromatic yeast strains in stainless steel tanks - the sole aim being to reflect and preserve the flavours and aromas grown in the vineyard. A small portion of the juice was fermented with a non-saccharomyces yeast and 2% was barrel fermented. After fermentation, the wine was kept in contact with the lees for three months. This classic technique enhances creaminess and integrates flavours.
Brilliant pale straw colour with highlights of green around the edges and a watery hue. Herbaceous gooseberry, passionfruit and grassy asparagus aromas fill the nostrils with hints citrus, flint and minerals also evident. Exploding across the palate is a concentrate of passionfruit and gooseberry with some citrus, asparagus, herbaceous grassy elements and minerals extending across the back half. Crisp acidity with a long racy finish.

Imagine how mind blowing it must have been when the first punchy, but beautifully balanced, Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc hit the international scene in the 1980s. This one gives you a hint. It has all the Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc classic aromas whilst retaining elegance. There’s gooseberry and passionfruit, white peaches, mandarin zest, jasmine blossom and soft, green grass. In your mouth it’s all about the freshness. Bright acidity is balanced by a tiny pinch of sweetness. The vibrant fruit flavours move into more citrus, with just a hint of trademark herbaceous notes, and a touch of salinity. Beautiful concentration is highlighted by the fine citrus pith texture and remarkable length.

The Jane Eyre signature of fragrance and clarity is here, wedded with the intensity that Tasmanian pinot can often yield. Epsilon is the project of Aaron and Julie Southern (Julie is a member of the Kalleske clan) who own vineyards in the Northern part of Barossa. As the familiar story goes with so many growers they sold off their fruit to larger wineries until a chance meeting with the Massena boys Dan Standish and Jaysen Collins. Under their guidance they convinced them to start up their own brand in 2004 and build a winery on the property. Maturation takes place for approximately 12 months in new and seasoned French and American oak with only the best batches making the final blend.
Midnight black heart with a bright dark purple hue. Fragrant dark plum, liquorice and ripe blueberry scents evolve out of the glass followed by smoky vanillin cedar, fennel and peppered meat notes. Sourced from Yalumba’s famed Menzie’s vineyard, the name ‘Cigar’ is derived from the unique cigar like shape of Coonawarra’s famous terra rossa strip. Maturation takes place in a mix of new French oak hogsheads, barriques and Hungarian oak hogsheads and one year old American oak barriques with balance in older French, American and Hungarian oak for a period of 16 months.
Impenetrable inky black heart with a very deep dark red black tinged hue. Red to black currant, mulberry and red liquorice aromas emanate from the glass followed by some vanillin cedar, subtle earth and bay leaf notes. Rich blackcurrant, mulberry and red liquorice fruits flood the mouth carrying with them medium to full body weight. Excellent concentration and freshness with a sturdy tannin structure lending firmness to the back half. Spicy vanillin cedar, earth and bay leaf accents form across the back half. As it is with the power of suggestion, the Cigar invokes the savoury spices of tobacco, cedar and sandalwood. It's layered with bilberries, blackcurrants and prunes, too. Some coffee and poppy seed tones. It is a wine in the Yalumba line-up that stands out for its heavily laden spices and muscular tannins. The Estate is celebrating its 135th anniversary in 2025, a remarkable achievement, and as part of that, they have introduced a new range, their Old Vines expression (it was not as though they were short of different ranges already, but, as they say in the classics, too much of a good thing is never enough). A 57/43 blend, after basket pressing, the wine matures in French oak for a year and a half. A dark garnet/maroon hue here, with a wonderfully evocative nose. There are notes of dried herbs, aniseed, beef stock, smoked meats, blackberries, leather, aniseed and cold tea. The palate offers focus, concentration and abundant but very fine tannins. Impressive length here and the intensity never wavers from start to finish. There is a touch of vegemite on the palate and it is immediately evident that the oak is immaculately integrated. Expect this to provide pleasure for at least the next ten to twelve years, and for it to improve further during that time. Drink 2025-2037.

There’s been a single cask version or two of Fleeting, but this one is a combination of maturing whisky in two casks types. You'll need a magnifying glass at hand to read the front label, which tells us the liquids spent five years in Oloroso sherry barrels, then six years in old barrels that held fortified Pinot Noir with an outturn of 1800 bottles. Couvreur is known for pulling some stunners out of wine casks, and the very dark purple ruby colour of this bottling anticipates something special. Oloroso matured Glendronachs are usually the most sought after. This edition was distilled in 1992 and bottled in 2023 at 54.5% Alc./Vol. yielding 633 bottles. Non chill filtered.
While Glendronach single cask whiskies haven't been explicitly discontinued, they have completely disappeared from the distillery's website. Currently the Australian market has only three lines allocated. It’s said that their rarity is due to limited output and growing demand. That situation is partly due to Glendronach's closure from 1996 to 2002 which impacted the availability of older stock. It would also explain the distillery’s recent re-focus on core range expressions that coincided with a packaging upgrade in 2024. Typically offering outturns of around 600 bottles per cask, the single barrel selections are famous for offering snapshots of a particular cask at a specific point in time making each one unique. The current imports exhibit beautiful deep mahogany colours anticipating whiskies that are layered, lush and decadent - also more intense and expressive compared to major competitors like Macallan. This shipment is an opportunity to secure some Highland classics that otherwise may never have been available in Australia.

As a relatively large estate in Saint-Julien, the 75 hectare Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou estate is planted to 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, at a density of 10,000 vines per hectare. They also own a small parcel of land in Haut-Medoc. Changes in the winery, and a greater focus on parcel selection for the Grand Vin has resulted in a reduction in output from around 20,000 cases per year in the 1980’s to around 10,000 cases today. And the wines have never looked better. The pair of 2009 and 2010, along with the 2016 are considered standouts for the region, intense and concentrated efforts that will live for many years to come.

As to the Grand Vin, the 2024 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is based on 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot, resting in 100% new oak. Its deep purple hue is followed by a terrific 2024 that defies the challenges of the vintage. Pure cassis, darker currants, graphite, crushed stone, and sappy violet notes all emerge on the nose. It's medium-bodied, with a beautifully layered, concentrated mid-palate, ripe yet velvety tannins, and a great finish. This classic Saint-Julien will benefit from bottle age and is another brilliant effort from the team. It's one of the richer, more structured wines in the vintage, yet it remains balanced, precise, and never overdone.

Lovely aromatics on the nose, deep vivid purple. Floral scents and lots of Cabernet markers, dried mint, clove, aniseed and blackcurrants. Cool and crunchy straight away, this has a gorgeous smooth texture with ripe and concentrated fruit. I like this, it feels restrained and not overdone with a silky fruit profile and firm but fine tannins. There's a softness to this and a long length with a push of flavour. It has a deep, dark fruit aspect - not too sharp or sour, balanced in terms of acidity and fruit with wet stones, graphite and liquorice on the finish. Elegant and enjoyable. 3.8pH. While much of the plantings are intermixed with those of Leoville Las Cases, the Grand Vin comes from a total of 60 hectares, and is planted to 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. The estate also produces a second wine, Pavillon de Leoville Poyferre, along with the previously unofficial second wine Moulin Riche which comes from a dedicated 21 hectare plot.

Offering up aromas of jammy berries and toasty oak, the 2024 Léoville Poyferré is a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. Medium-bodied, dense and blocky, it's firm, tannic and chewy, with some green characteristics vying with its creamy patina of new wood. Harvest took place between 24 September and 10 October, and some lots saw some reverse osmosis.

The 2024 Léoville-Poyferré was picked from September 24 to October 10 at 26.42 hl/ha. There was some reverse osmosis on the Merlot and Cabernet Franc varieties. Quasi-Pauillac in style, it offers quite backward black fruit, hints of melted tar and graphite on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied and quite succulent with fleshy ripe tannins, tobacco-laced black fruit, brown spices and light undergrowth. With a fine supple landing on the finish in typical "LP" fashion, this constitutes a delicious, early-drinking Poyferré that will be more approachable than other vintages. Drink 2028-2050.

A bit closed and almost steely at the moment. At the same time, there is depth and huge structure, showing black cherries, mulberries, fine spices and violets. Full-bodied, this has heaps of very small-grained, dusty tannins on the palate and a long finish. A concentrated wine. Wait and see.

Looking at the Grand Vin, the 2024 Château Léoville Poyferré is based on 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It shows deep purple hues and classic notes of cassis, lead pencil, graphite, crushed stone, and violets. Pure, polished, and elegant on the palate, it has perfectly ripe tannins and plays in the forward, charming style of the vintage while still delivering plenty of depth and richness. It's aging in 80% new French oak for 18 to 20 months.

Torzi Matthews is partnership between Domenic Torzi and Tracy Matthews. Their Schist Rock Shiraz is sourced from the Eden Valley sub region of Mt McKenzie with the vines 27 years old. Maturation takes place in predominately older French oak barrels (only 10% are new) and 10% whole bunch fruit is included in the ferment.
Rich and plump with a silky flow of dark fruit.
Totally opaque black dark red heart with a dark red hue. Intense ripe black cherry, liquorice and dark plum aromas are complimented by dried herb, vanillin cedar, fennel and peppered earth notes. Rich and plush, a silky flow of dark plum, liquorice and spicy dark cherry fruits are layered across the medium to full bodied palate. Notions of fennel, vanillin cedar and peppered dried herbs ensue. Deep and powerful it has velvet smooth tannins and a long, sumptuous finish.
Drink over the next 4-5 years.

While Arlett offer several wood-finished variants, this edition offers something out of the ordinary for whisky drinkers. It's appropriate that the Tessendier brothers selected their local apéritif as the support here, as they are firstly producers of premium Cognac. Just a few months in x-Pineau des Charentes casks has added secondary notes of dried apricots, wild honey and cinnamon to the cereal character of the whisky. The flavours complement the malt, becoming better defined and juicier through the finish. A higher ABV gives the palate more presence without adding heat or prickle, and there's also lovely sweet-dry balance. The most impressive finishing in the lineup, if Pineau des Charentes is your thing, this is your dram. 48% Alc./Vol.

Loaded Barrel's latest offering sees natural butterscotch flavours blended with their four-year-old single malt. The result may not be as complex as traditional Scotch Whisky liqueurs, but it avoids the intense sweetness of butterscotch schnapps. Shaken well before tasting (as per the producer's recommendation), the nose feels moderated by the base spirit. It's sweet, with tooth-coating butterscotch and milk chocolate flavours, yet it retains a lightness that allows the sugars to 'breathe', extending the palate length and avoiding the clunky, cloying character typical of the category. A one-trick-pony, but in the context of dessert liqueurs, this is a success. Even if you don't have a sweet tooth, one taste shouldn't be out of the question. 22% Alc./Vol.
