Brokenwood has long sourced quality grapes from all around Australia, which is very wise when you hail from a region that, while it offers world class Semillon and Shiraz, can have limitations with other varieties. Here, they have blended fruit from Beechworth and the Alpine Valley in Victoria. Fermentation is in stainless steel, except for the pressings, which is by way of old French oak barrels, to add to the texture and complexity. This is a really impressive Pinot Gris. The colour is a slightly deeper gold than most. The wine is immaculately constructed and varietally all present and correct, with lifted notes of pears, crisp green apples, and a hint of figs and spices. It also gives the impression of the merest note of oak, but all is well integrated and well balanced. There is depth and energy here, and the wine is richly flavoured on the palate, and is well supported by bright acidity. It exhibits impressive length and should drink impressively for at least the next five years. Drink 2024-2029.

If Pinot Gris is not normally your bag, you might want to check out this really interesting take on it. It comes from Beechworth and the Alpine Valleys in Victoria – so it’s cool climate stuff. The juice was fermented before the pressings were fermented separately in old oak, then coming together in the final blend. So, it has texture and fruit but at the same time, there is a fine minerally linear thread that keeps the energy level up. Attractive and very pleasing take on this variety. Drink 2024-2028.

Well if you are looking for a proper Rosé for this Spring and Summer then look no further than this super, bone dry style which you can enjoy by the gallon. Pale onion skin pink but not pale in style as it delivers elegant yet piercing aromas of warm watermelon and cranberry with powdery dusted spice complexity – fennel seed with touches of paprika. The best part is the palate with excellent volume of flavour which it holds and holds and holds with subtle complexity over an extended finish with a little twist of tannins adding depth. Most Bandol Rosé wishes it was this good. Drink 2024-2026.

This delicious, vibrant Pinot Noir is produced from four different clones planted in vineyards located at Gumeracha, Forreston and Lobethal in the Adelaide Hills. 2024 was a cool but sunny vintage that produced low yields but high quality fruit. Brimming with savoury red fruits it sees no oak in order to preserve freshness and purity.

A light, supplely textured Pinot brimming with red fruits that makes for great everyday drinking.

Red to dark red in colour with black toned edges and a translucent red hue. Very fragrant out of the glass with violet, red to dark cherry and strawberry scents sailing through the nostrils. Some fresh herb, delicate forest floor and spicy rhubarb notes are also present. Delicious strawberry and cherry fruits drive the light, supplely textured palate with rhubarb, subtle anise, forest floor and spicy dried herb elements sitting underneath. Polished tannins with fresh acidity lending vibrancy to the juicy mid length finish.

A fine Pinot Noir from the Adelaide Hills, the colour here is a bright crimson. The nose exhibits delightful notes of red fruits, chinotto, a hint of tomato bush and a lovely cherry cola character. This is sleek in every way with bright acidity and fine balance. An elegant, stylish Pinot with a lingering finish, this will provide pleasure for five to six years but is really drinking nicely at the moment. Drink 2024-2030.

The 2024 The **** Pinot Noir leads with an abundance of red berries and sumptuous spice: pink peppercorns, raspberry pip, anise and red apple. In the mouth, the wine is chalky, flavorsome and delicious. There's impressive concentration and density of flavor, but it's never at the expense of balance or elegance. This is so good! It's the best *** yet for ****. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2025-2034.

François Mikulski has quietly earned a place among Meursault’s most respected producers, known for wines that prioritise purity, energy, and mineral precision. His focus is on clarity and freshness across the board — whether it’s Aligoté or Premier Cru — with élevage and viticulture carefully tuned to preserve site and structure. Stylistically, the wines lean toward the racy, tensile end of the Meursault spectrum, in the vein of Roulot or Carillon. They’re built to age, but always with a drink-now brightness that keeps you coming back for another glass.

    Other Reviews....
Super-fresh and relatively elegant aromas include those of green apple, just sliced citrus and touches of wet stone and white flowers. The racy and beautifully detailed flavors exude a subtle minerality on the bone-dry and youthfully austere finish. I quite like this but the combination of austerity and exceptionally finale may not be for everyone. Drink through 2026+.

Much like the Limozin, the expressive nose is perfumed and elegant with its cool array of just sliced citrus, smoked apple and subtle floral and spice wisps. There is excellent punch to the beautifully textured medium weight flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the balanced and sneaky long finish. Like several of the wines in the range, this could use better depth but it is clearly built-to-age and developing more complexity should just be a matter of patience. Drink through 2032+.

Here the more restrained nose is both riper and spicier with its aromas of poached plum, violet and liqueur-like dark pinot fruit scents. The rich, succulent and sappy medium weight flavors possess a seductive mouthfeel before culminating in a dusty, youthfully austere and solidly powerful finale. This could use more depth but like all competent examples of Santenots, this should easily repay 10+ years of keeping during which more depth should develop. Drink through 2032+.

2018 Royal Tokaji Blue Label 5 Puttonyos Aszu (500ml)

Tokaji Aszú is a noble sweet wine made by blending dried and noble rotten berries to a dry base wine. Taste and quality of the Aszú mainly depend on the number of hods (puttonyos) filled with dry berries (25 kilograms each), which are added to a cask (Gönc type, 136 liters) of dry base wine. Consequently, the proportion between aszú berries and dry base wine is about 1:1 for a 6 puttonyos Aszú. Aszú Eszencia is made with the same process, and is a classification above 6 puttonyos where the ratio of noble dry berries to wine is more akin to 7-10 puttonyos. This is not to be confused with Tokaji Essencia which is a fermentation of just the free run juice of the dried noble berries as they rest in the vat.

    Other Reviews....
Attractive nose of dried apricots, candied plums and hints of tea leaves and vanilla. Medium- to full-bodied with vivid acidity and a dense, creamy texture. It shows chocolate bitterness at the end. Very long and textural, with a lot of delicious fruit upfront. Drink or hold.

The domaine of Marc Bredif is one of the most famous names in the Loire, renowned for the longevity and quality of their Vouvray. Established in 1893 under the name of Chateau les Roches it wasn't until 1919 when Marc Bredif took over from his uncle, that the name was changed to reflect the change in ownership.

Marc Bredif produces three levels of Vouvray, each with a greater degree of concentration and sweetness. Their Classic range is crisp and fresh in style, dry and refreshing. Occasionally they will also release this wine after 10 years in the cellar as a museum release. Grande Annee is their off-dry style released only once ready to drink, often 10+ years from harvest. Finally their Collection releases come from only the finest vintages, are medium-sweet, with a huge amount of intensity and concentration, and an enviable ability to develop further in the cellar.

The 2006 vintage in Vouvray was a distinctive year that particularly shone for sweeter wines, but it also produced some appealing dry and off-dry styles. A wet spring and a warm, stormy summer made for a challenging growing season, but careful vineyard management paid off. The early autumn humidity encouraged noble rot, leading to exceptional moelleux and liquoreux wines with rich, honeyed complexity and impressive depth. While acidity was generally lower than in more classic years, well-made dry and off-dry Vouvrays offered generous orchard and stone fruit flavors, a rounded texture, and early approachability, making them enjoyable both in youth and with moderate aging.

2015 was a fantastic vintage for Vouray where both the dry and sweet wines excelled. The vintage was marked by warm and dry conditions, resulting in ripe, concentrated wines with good depth and structure with huge scope for both drinking now or cellaring.

A warm, dry growing season with little disease pressure allowed for slow, even ripening, resulting in Chenin Blanc with both richness and vibrant acidity. Dry and off-dry wines from this year are particularly well-structured, showcasing ripe orchard fruits, floral notes, and a firm mineral core. Boasts the lifted aromatic cool climate qualities of Macedon Ranges Pinot Noir with some oomph. Harmony reigns on the bouquet in chocolate and spice, black cherry and plum, five spice and aniseed. Runs generous and long with supple tannins allowing a good build-up across the palate of delicious, juicy red fruits, plum and spice with a pinch of dried herbs. A good follow up to the ’22 highlighting the estate’s rounded, soft hearted, fruit-filled Pinot Noir winemaking ethos. And like the ’22, has enough in reserve for the cellar as well as for earlier enjoyment. Fruit from Yarra Junction and Dixons Creek. Another bright, well-made and well-priced pinot from the team at Mandala. A light, bright cherry red. Gently lifted aromas of freshly poached red fruits, floral notes and a hint of forest floor in the background. Equally gentle on the light- to medium-bodied, poised and persistent palate. Rich, seductive and plump Barossa Shiraz.

The Whaler is a blend of Barossa Valley (49%) and Eden Valley (51%) fruit. The Barossa Valley vineyard is situated on the heavy red soils of the warm northern sub-region of Moppa. Grapes from the cooler Eden Valley are sourced from two vineyards situated at either end of the valley, in Moculta and Craneford.
The Barossa Valley component providing fleshy dark berry fruit characters and density, while the Eden Valley component contributes elegance and bright wild berry fruited aromatic lift. A small percentage of whole bunch fruit was included in the ferment with maturation taking place in a mix of new and seasoned hogsheads for a period of 14 months.
Midnight black heart with a dark purple black tinged hue. Captivating scents of dark plum, liquorice and blackberry show plenty of intensity out of the glass and are followed by faintly smoked vanillin cedar, fennel, blueberry and peppered earth notes. Rich seductive and plump, the full bodied palate is saturated with gorgeously fleshed dark plum, liquorice and blackberry fruits. Spicy vanillin cedar, fennel and subtle peppered earth elements the undercard. Possessing silky smooth tannins and excellent power, it finishes long, plush and sumptuous.

A rich, fleshy medium bodied Pinot that’s generously layered with dark to black fruit.

Established in 1988 this tiny vineyard is planted to Pinot Noir (5.5 hectares) and Chardonnay (1 hectare) and is located several kilometres inland from the coast near the entrance to the Apsley Gorge national Park north-west of Bicheno. The vineyards unique situation near the entry to the gorge brings breezes in the afternoon which have a distinct cooling effect which means this vineyard is typically one of the last to harvest in Tasmania with harvest usually being around the first week of May.
Since 1999 winemaking has been undertaken by owner Brian Franklin who also does vintage each year in Burgundy with Philippe Charlopin (himself mentored by his friend Henri Jayer) in Gevrey Chambertin, and is helped here in Tasmania by young French winemakers including Philippe Charlopin’s son Yann.
Aged in a combination of new and two year old French oak barrels. Red to dark red core with black toned edges and a light red hue. Bounding out of the glass is a fragrant bouquet of dark to black cherry, strawberry and anise trailed by some smoky cedar, earth and spicy dried herb notes. Amply fleshed and expansive, the mid weighted palate is generously endowed with rich dark to black cherry, ripe strawberry and anise flavours. Silken in it’s feel, toasty cedar, earth, dried herb and spice elements are detailed across the back half. Powerful and concentrated it has polished yet structured tannins and a long, enveloping finish.

German born Timo Mayer, along with partner Rhonda Ferguson established Mayer in 1999, on the slopes of Mt Toolebewong, between Healesville & Woori Yallock. They produce a small range of hand crafted, single vineyard wines, believing that wines are made in the vineyard and not the winery. All wines are unfined and unfiltered to show the true expression of the vineyard. Vines are often close-planted, winemaking frequently utilises a generous use of whole bunch but most impressive is Timo's cheerful, amusing nature.
Described as giving it the "full beans", this is the 100% whole bunch version of Timo's trademark Pinot Noir. A wild ride on the Timo train, the Dr Pinot has all the sweet and sour, stalky and spice notes that had everyone swooning when his wines first hit the market.

Estate grown, 100% whole bunches, matured in seasoned hogsheads. A bright, light garnet. A slightly riper version of this always perfumed and seductive wine. Lifted aromas of wild strawberry, rose bush bramble and green peppercorn spice precede the gently sinewy, savoury and very long palate. My advice: drink the Mayer Pinot now and over the next five years and then get stuck into this Dr Mayer Pinot. Drink 2025-2035.

The Dr is in town doing house calls. Or some such. All the bunches.
It’s ‘whoa!’ in the green herb, white pepper and mezcal characters! Strap in. Lighter weight, a sluice of red cherry, rose hip cherry, all of this tightly wound with those green herb and peppery notes, skinny in its jive and cinched with ultra fine, silty tannin lending a long, drying pucker post sips. Fragrant, frisky, needs some time to see it elevate, but even now has a slinky swagger that should drag pinotphiles in. Sleek, elegant, personality plus. Drink 2026 - 2036.

When Timo cheered "bring back the funk!", it was this wine that originally delivered on the promise. He's since released the Dr expression which dials up this ethos even further, but his Close Planted Pinot still holds a special place in many Pinot lover's hearts. All estate grown with 30% whole bunches and matured in 15% new hogsheads. A light, bright ruby red. An opulent, floral and spicy bouquet where you barely detect the stems. Delicious as a young wine; red fruited and with silky, very nicely balanced tannins. A wine to drink before the '23, but it's also worth pointing out that Mayer's track record with this wine tells us that this will still be looking good five to seven years from now. A little Gilbert Gottfried here – fun, edgy, a touch shrill, a bit heightened in energy, but well balanced in the end. Perhaps drinking this wine right now is ‘too soon’ too.
Snappy, tart, tense and bright. Red cherry, cranberry drink, pomegranate juice, big dashes of white pepper, green capsicum, faint game meat leaving a little slosh and softness in the vibrancy inherent here. A sheath of sand-storm tannins lending a little tension, the mainstay that the wine feels tight then a little splash of juice to finish, with some powdery grip helping things out. Attractive drinking. Drink 2025 - 2033.

The multifaceted nature of Australian shiraz (syrah) is really great. Mayer has always been distinct.
This is squelchy, kind of warm, ripe fruited, laced with white pepper, game meat and grilled red capsicum, touches of anise, some cardamom. Lots on it seems, though you’d say that the softness and spread in texture is a little overt, a little macho and broad. Though flavours are laced with a little white balsamic lift, fresh (!), great, there’s a richness that kind of distinguishes the wine and takes some energy away, perhaps. There’s gunna be easy fans here, but perhaps when the quill and ink is out, there’s some quibble around some detail here in finding a full balance of things. Drink 2025-2032.

Aromatic and textural, with apricot, honey, and peach blossom lifted by bright freshness and length.

Yeringberg is a historic Yarra Valley estate, first established in 1863 and now under the stewardship of the fifth generation of the de Pury family. Once one of the region’s most celebrated vineyards, production ceased in 1921 before being revived by Guill and Katherine de Pury in 1969. Today, winemaker Sandra de Pury leads the winery, working alongside her brother David who manages the vineyard. With some of the oldest vines in the Yarra Valley, Yeringberg continues to produce elegant, age-worthy wines that reflect both heritage and thoughtful custodianship.
Yeringberg’s 2022 Viognier captures the variety’s trademark exoticism and perfume with poise and finesse. A low-yielding vintage resulted in a small but high-quality crop, all picked on a single day. The fruit was gently whole-bunch pressed and wild fermented in old barrels, then aged on lees with occasional stirring for 10 months. The result is a richly aromatic wine, offering layers of apricot, peach blossom, burnt honey, white tea, and ginger. The palate is textural and complex—unctuous yet bright—delivering generous flavour with freshness and length.

With some of the oldest vines in the Yarra Valley, Yeringberg continues to produce elegant, age-worthy wines that reflect both heritage and thoughtful custodianship.
Yeringberg’s 2022 Marsanne Roussanne is a beautifully composed white blend of 61% Marsanne and 39% Roussanne, sourced from old vines planted in 1973 and 1983 respectively. A low-yielding vintage yielded small volumes of intensely flavoured fruit, handpicked and co-fermented before ageing in old oak to preserve purity and freshness. The result is a wine of quiet complexity and savoury elegance, with lifted aromas of honeysuckle, jasmine and orange blossom layered over quince, pear skin and sandalwood. The palate is finely textured, lively and food-friendly, with the hallmark breadth and power of this classic Rhône-inspired blend.

Aromas of ripe pears and apricots sit alongside some lemon conserve, pink grapefruit and orange blossom scents. It's a compelling mix that flows through onto the palate, which is gently textured, saline, and very well structured. A 60/40 blend. “Vines planted 1973-85. The 2 varieties were picked 3 days apart but fermented and aged together. Both crushed and destemmed, some skin contact time. Fermented in tank then 10 months in old oak on light lees. No new oak, no MLF. Blend determined by vineyard not winemaker each year.”
A complex golden wine that’s nutty and saline, and often puts me in mind of Cornflakes, though maybe that’s just me. I’m quite fond of them too, especially with some good honey on top. There’s pear and apple, fresh apricot, some flowers and spice, maybe some aniseed, fine chalk dust texture with a pithy grip, kind of waxy, but balanced in acidity with some citrus tones, and a firm finish of excellent length. Nice. Drink 2024 - 2031+.

The result is a finely balanced Chardonnay with restrained aromas of nectarine, citrus blossom and flint, opening into layers of white peach, honey and roasted nuts. The palate is poised and layered, offering both richness and drive in equal measure.

A combination of natural and inoculated ferments, then racked to 25% new oak with 25% mlf. A bright green gold. Attractive scents of ripe stone fruits, lemon confiture, honey and hazelnuts that are echoed on the flavourful, silky, gently viscous and long palate. At the more hedonistic end of the Yarra chardonnay spectrum and a delicious wine to drink now and over the next three to five years. Drink 2024 - 2028.

Complex aromas of lemon peel, phosphorous, honeysuckle and orange blossoms. The palate is medium-bodied with a refined texture and bright acidity, giving notes of grapefruit, beeswax, lanolin and river stones. Very finely constructed, with a slight phenolic edge adding to the tactile finish. Excellent. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

    2022 Yeringberg Cabernet Sauvignon
    Yarra Valley, Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $110. 00
    Bottle
    $1320.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13.5%
    Closure: Stelvin

Savoury and poised, with blackberry, olive and dark chocolate over a fresh, age-worthy frame.

Produced only in the finest vintages, the 2022 Yeringberg Cabernet Sauvignon is a single-varietal expression from 1999 plantings, offering structure and intensity with classic refinement. Handpicked and fermented in small open-top tanks, the wine spent 16 days on skins and was matured for 21 months in French oak (30% new). Deep aromas of blackberry, black olive and dark chocolate are layered with iodine and tobacco. The palate is savoury and powerful, yet fresh and finely poised, showing the vintage’s hallmark elegance and age-worthy structure.
    Alc. 13.5%

Just the third straight cabernet made, and from grapes planted in '99. A deepish bright crimson purple. A touch more closed than the Yeringberg blend, but still with a lovely core of dark fruits, together with cedar, violets and a hint of iodine on the perfumed and captivating bouquet. The medium-bodied and firmly structured palate is beautifully balanced but with those, firm, fine-grained tannins, this will require some patience to fulfil its potential. Drink 2024 - 2035.

Well, I probably should have tasted this alongside the Yeringberg Yeringberg from the same vintage, though timing/chaos prevented that. I reckon this is the better wine for me, because it has a bit less oak, and more perfume and finesse. I could be wrong. It’s from 1999 plantings.
Intense small berried black and red fruits, quite some violet perfume, pencils and tobacco, perhaps a little aniseed. It’s medium-bodied, quite ferrous and pencilly, the old liquid ‘mineral’ feel that great Cabernet often sports, compact and fine-grained tannin grip, freshness and excellent length, some redcurrant peeking through in the aftertaste along with some more savoury/earthy character. Beautiful wine. So good. Drink 2025 - 2038+.

Golden and expressive, with floral aromatics and a textured, tea-like palate driven by extended skin contact.

To secure the future of Yeringberg, the team has spent the past three years planting new vines on phylloxera-resistant rootstock and reorienting vineyard blocks to better adapt to a changing climate. The Babyberg range will showcase wines from these young plantings (2020–2025), offering an experimental and diverse take on Yeringberg’s evolving story.
The first Babyberg release is a fresh and playful take on Yeringberg’s classic Marsanne Roussanne blend. Comprising around 80% Marsanne fermented on skins for up to 21 days and 20% whole-bunch pressed Roussanne, the wine was matured in old oak for 10 months before bottling in February 2024. Golden in hue, it opens with aromas of honeysuckle, orange blossom and apricot. The palate is lively and textured, with a spicy, nutty richness and distinctive phenolics—thanks to the extended skin contact—that recall fine black tea. A vibrant and expressive new chapter for Yeringberg.

80/20% marsanne/roussanne and a new wine made from young vines. Bright gold with green tinges. An opulent and attractive melange of apricot, peach and orange blossom. The medium-bodied palate is fleshy and flavoursome, balanced by soft acidity and a refreshing touch of grip on the finish. Drink 2025 - 2027.

Wonderfully aromatic and floral, giving notes of apricots, lavender, peaches and chamomile tea. The palate is full-bodied with a really phenolic and textural mouthfeel from 10 days of skin contact, showing notes of nectarines and honeysuckle. Unique and very interesting wine made from a young-vine blend of 80% marsanne and 20% roussanne. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Light yet rich and supple with an expansive flavour profile and long savoury finish.

William Downie is a pioneer of minimal-intervention, site-driven Pinot Noir in Australia. Based at Guendulain Farm in Yarragon, where he and wife Rachel Needoba planted a high-density 2-hectare vineyard in 2007, he also leases top sites like Bull Swamp and Camp Hill. Downie is known for his meticulous vineyard work and dedication to expressing place through Pinot Noir.
The Gippsland Pinot Noir is blend of fruit from the Matthews Vineyard in Berrys Creek and Guendulain Farm in Yarragon. Matthews, planted in 1998 to MV6 on red volcanic soils, is a cool, damp, dry-grown site producing dense canopies. Guendulain, established in 2008 with high-density plantings (10,000 vines/ha) of MV6 and Pommard clones, contributes structure and depth.

Dark red core with black shaded edges and a red to dark red hue. Perfumed aromas of violet, red cherry, strawberry and clove entrance the olfactory senses with some earth, wild herb and spicy cedar notes also evident. Light in body but simultaneously rich and supple, the palate features expansive red to dark cherry and strawberry fruits over a subtle rhubarb, forest floor, spicy cedar and dried herb back drop. Outstanding power wave with polished tannins and a beautifully balanced freshness. The long, graceful conclusion, highly savoury.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

Gee, I do love Gippsland pinot noir. This is beautifully modulated with a deeper, richer fruit profile, although it's far from fruity. In youth it simply shows more primary elements. A whorl of dark cherries, pips and black plums with pomegranate molasses, sweet spices and lots of autumnal fragrance – the earth and damp leaves. Lovely tannins, fresh acidity and, while it will last some distance, lovely now. Drink by 2036.

Downie is known for his meticulous vineyard work and dedication to expressing place through Pinot Noir.
Fruit for the Mornington Pinot Noir is sourced from two sites planted in 1998: Mrs Nicks Vineyard in Balnarring, with MV6 on south-facing sandy loam, and Rivendel in Merricks North, home to D5V12 and Pommard clones on grey loam.

Slightly cloudy red to dark red colour with a vibrant red hue. Fragrant violet, sour to red cherry and strawberry scents delicately infused with clove flourish through the nostrils trailed by some fresh herb, earth and spice notes. Delicious red cherry, bright red raspberry and winter strawberry fruits are underscored by lively acidity. Infusions of fresh herbs, light earth and spicy clove are also apparent. Light on its feet and energetic in its feel, it possesses excellent power and polished tannins. Finishes long, fresh and elegant.

One thing appealing with the pinots from Bill Downie is that they are immediately drinkable and deliciously so. Another difficult vintage on the Peninsula but this has a balance of aromas, flavours and texture. Dark red cherries, blood orange and zest with sumac and brown spices plus fresh herbs and a pinch of Italian bitter herbs, too. It’s a savoury wine. Tannins and acidity work in tandem to add definition across the mid-weighted palate. Drink by 2035.

Ethereal and floral, with fine tannins and a long, mountain-fresh palate.

Planted in 1998 at 250m elevation, Camp Hill is the highest site between the Strzelecki and Great Dividing Ranges. Predominantly MV6 with some 115, the north-facing vineyard sits on rocky red volcanic soils, producing wines of finesse and delicacy. The 2024 release is richer than previous vintages, yet remains true to Camp Hill’s character—expect an aromatic and ethereal wine with a powerful palate and long fine tannins.

Almost shy at first, a flutter of mint and herbs, florals and spice, not much, all hinting at what’s to come. Mid-weighted, the palate strewn with dark fruit and spice, a slight green edge coming through – almost a mix of charred radicchio and green peppercorn, but not too much, so it does blend back into the wine. There’s a lot to enjoy but it will be even better in another year or so. Drink by 2033.

Presented as part of the Celebration of the Cask range by Càrn Mòr, this very old Auchroisk was distilled in November 1990 and bottled in February 2015 with a small outturn of 273 bottles from a single hogshead.

In the early 1970s, companies were responding to growth by increasing production facilities to fill blends like J&B, which had become mega-brands. Auchroisk was one such operation that was completed in 1974. Despite a name that's notoriously difficult to pronounce, this relatively new distillery has already garnered a following. Most of it disappears into the J&B blends. 52.9% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Concentrated and gorgeously shaped with brisk acidity and a saline like minerality.

Located in the north-west sector of Chablis in the village of Maligny, Pierrick Laroche runs this family estate which was established by his father in the 1970s. After getting a degree in oenology from Beaune, Patrick travelled the world, doing various internships to gain experience before returning home to start making wine and take over the family vineyards for himself. In 2010 he ceased selling grapes to the local co-operative and produced his first vintage to great acclaim.
The domain has nearly 12ha of Petit Chablis, classified as such because the limestone tends to be the younger Portlandian rather than the older Kimmeridgian, and as such typically occupies higher sites (Portlandian overlies Kimmeridgian) and has less clay. Pierrick is convinced that his largest parcel of Petit really ought to be classed as Chablis; it makes wine like Chablis and indeed is surrounded by AOC Chablis vines.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a faint greenish tinge around the outskirts and a watery hue. Attractive pear and lime scents laced with wet stone and an oyster shell like minerality drift through the nostrils with ample volume. Delicious pear and lime fruits are delivered with excellent concentration and carry a beautifully rounded river stone like feel. Wet stone, oyster shell, subtle infusions of fresh herbs and a saline like minerality linger underneath. Brisk acidity finishing long and shapely.

The 2020 Etna Rosso is remarkably pretty, leading off with dusty roses and dried strawberries complicated by suggestions of violet and lavender. This flows effortlessly across the palate with floral-laced red fruits enhanced by sour citrus and spice. The 2020 lingers incredibly long yet maintains a lovely inner freshness. Only fruit, from the oldest parcels of vines at Ata Rangi makes it into this wine. The fabled Abel clone, allegedly smuggled from Burgundy in the mid-70s, makes up 40% of the blend. Incorporates 40% whole bunch fruit with maturation taking place in French oak (30% new) for a period of 11 months.
Deep dark red core with black toned edges and a dark red hue. Perfumed like aromas of violet, dark cherry, strawberry and plum captivate the olfactory senses with further sophistication drawn from some anise, vanillin cedar, forest floor and delicate spicy clove notes. Rich and concentrated yet structurally muscular in its feel, delicious dark cherry, strawberry and plum fruits are framed by graphite like tannins and agile acidity. Powerful yet somewhat understated at present, it’s supple on entry then tightens up towards the finish. Notions of anise, crushed rock, forest floor and spicy cedar lend further complexity. Concludes expansive yet tense and makes a long seductive exit.

The 2021 Pinot Noir definitely reflects the vintage. Its good color and abundance of gravelly tannins display the smaller berried, smaller vintage. Its bright fruit, intense concentration and plentiful acidity accompany primary red fruit flavor, with an impressive show of ample black tea leaf-like tannins. It's a wine for the long haul that draws out on the extended finish. To be released in 2024. Drink 2025-2039.

The 2021 Pinot Noir is vibrant on the nose and totally precise and focused. The acid spools right from the front of the palate and has a mobile, agile way about it. The season may have had its challenges, but the wine is effortless, natural and shapely. It's great. The 40% whole bunch here sits well within the red fruit and creates a capacious mid-palate, without an impact of stalky flavor. Superb. A real pleasure to drink. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Loaded Barrel Small Batch Series Wheat & Single Malt Australian Whisky (500ml)
    Melbourne, Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46.2%

What some might call a double-malt, this limited release forms part of the distillery's new Small Batch Series. Contrasting deep virgin-oak driven flavour with the fruitiness of malted wheat and barley, the style bridges the bourbon and single malt category; sweet and soft like classic wheated styles (think Weller), but heavier and richer with the malt adding body and texture, it’s hard to tell where the grains end and the oak begins. Creamy flavours of muesli, vanilla, sticky date and milk chocolate are beautifully meshed alongside budding fruitiness. If you're looking for a delicious, seductive end-of-the-night sipper, this ticks all the boxes, however it's best over ice or left uncut. Minimal dilution quickly thins out the flavours. Batch No. 001 weighs in at 46.2% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... On the nose it’s vanilla, and banana. On the tongue it’s orchard fruits, followed by hint of banana again, all wrapped in our signature virgin American oak flavours - toffee and vanilla bean.
