A combination of rums from Barbados, Trinidad, and Jamaica - hence the name '3 stars'. Some of the rums are unaged, others aged 3 and 12 years, blended and filtered back to clear before being bottled by the French Cognac house, Pierre Ferrand. Light to moderate aromatics yield notes of unripe banana, green olive and peppercorn, becoming more subdued and waxy with aeration. Starts off light and easy in the mouth but crescendos enough by mid palate to gain a point in concentration. Almost a fine grappa-like profile with subtle fruity / unripe banana flavours leading into a mildly creamy, waxy, grassy finish. Concludes pleasantly spicy, crisp and precise. Not the driest on the market but one of the best. 41.2% Alc./Vol.
Alexandre Gabriel, proprietor of Cognac Ferrand, comments, “…Our desire was to develop a rum that shows character, elegance, complexity and a great finish – the ideal rum for cocktails … beginning with a 3-year aged Trinidad rum, carbon filtered to maintain its white colour and to remove the heavier tannins while preserving the aromatics developed and refined by aging. Un-aged rums from Barbados and Jamaica are blended, along with a 12 year old rum from Jamaica. The Jamaican rum is an expensive ingredient but key to the taste of the overall blend. Trinidad brings elegance and refinement, Barbados brings character and aromatics with fruit notes without being too heavy and Jamaican brings the funk, the touch that makes it a complete product.”

...This rum is extremely sugar-forward, a monstrously sweet rum that leaves delicacy behind. Big tropical notes — mango and especially banana — hit you after the raw sugar cane fades, and that old Jamaican rum, pot-distilled for sure, brings a touch of hoary funk to the finish. The Pierre Ferrand Company has had relationships with a number of the Caribbean’s top rum producers for many years via the supply of x-Cognac casks. Presented with the opportunity to taste the fruits of his trade, Ferrand’s owner/director, Alexandre Gabriel, visited the Caribbean and was blown away. The experience ignited a love affair with rum, and followed with the launch of the Plantation brand around 2005. One of its key points of difference is Ferrand’s finishing process. When maturation in the Caribbean is deemed complete, the rums are transported at natural strength to the historic Ferrand estate in France and then ‘finished’ for several months in small French Cognac barrels. This process was used extensively in the 18th and 19th centuries but has almost disappeared, with ninety-nine percent of rums now aged in barrels that previously held Bourbon. “It is a very difficult thing to get right, but when done well, it's paradise”; Gabriel concludes, "In the Caribbean, Plantation Rums are rare treasures. At Ferrand they become jewels.”
The brand's entry-level dark offering is predominately Barbados rum blended with a smaller amount of older Jamaican rum (aged 10 to 15 years).

Plantation’s standby bottlings, a blend of dark rums with no age statement, finished in Bourbon casks. Very strong on the nose with coffee and raisin notes the most powerful elements, along with a hefty slug of hogo. On the palate, it’s more easygoing, but offers mushroom, more coffee grounds, and a slightly sweaty finish. A winner if you like your rum musky and a little funky. - drinkhacker.com

Pol Roger’s 2018 vintage Champagne is made from the traditional house vintage blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay sourced from 20 Grands and Premiers crus vineyards in the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs regions.
An exuberant mousse slowly subsides into a pale straw coloured base that has pale gold tinged edges and a fine persistent bead coursing through it. Classic Pol Roger nose with exquisite aromas of baked bread, yeast lees and citrus intertwined with delicate roasted almond, nougat and subtle oyster shell like notes. Rich and powerful yet showing wonderful finesse, the refreshing palate is graced with baked bread, citrus, yeast lees and pear flavours. Subtle cashew, nougat and ginger elements lurk underneath. Satiny in it’s flow and possessing a weightless, airy like feel, it finishes crisp, long and enveloping.

Made from 60% Pinot Noir and the rest Chardonnay and pouring a vibrant silver/yellow color, the 2018 Champagne Brut Vintage (like all these wines) was aged in stainless steel without any oak. In the glass, it opens to springy and dewy floral aromas of honeydew melon, fresh flowers, citrus blossoms, and pastry dough. Medium-bodied and inviting, it’s approachable now and takes on a more mineral character on the palate without ever feeling austere. All its components move seamlessly through the palate, with a refined mousse and a kiss of sunny feel on the finish nodding to the warmth of the vintage, but it’s clean and refined all the way through. This is going to improve with age, but it’s quite enjoyable now. Drink over the coming 15 or so years. It was made exclusively from Premier Cru and Grand Cru villages, was aged for 6 years on the lees, and saw 7-8 grams per liter dosage. Drink 2024-2040.

Just over five years ago there were only four distilleries in Ireland with mature whiskey stocks, and four new distilleries in operation whose stocks are not yet fully matured. Meanwhile, the popularity of Irish whiskey is growing at an unprecedented rate. Ireland's Minister for Agriculture and Food, Simon Coveney, said "Irish whiskey brands now represent the fastest growing spirit globally, with investment of €1 billion planned over a 10-year period". In fact, there are around twenty distilleries either being planned or being built in Ireland to cater for the expected 300% growth by 2030. The mammoth demand has inevitably led some to conclude that a supply shortage is imminent. Will Ireland follow the same path as Japan and Scotland, repositioning its prestige labels as reduced age / NAS (no age statement) releases? Are Irish classics destined to be compromised by a disproportionate inclusion of younger material? Time will tell...
This single pot still incarnation of Powers is named for the now-defunct old Powers distillery. Using a pot still distillate which is true to the original style of John's Lane, the whiskey has been matured for not less than 12 years, mainly in first fill American bourbon casks, with a small contribution from whiskies matured in Oloroso sherry butts.
Tasting note: The brilliant, brassy gold colour is visual pleasure. Typically robust, Irish pot still bouquet is oily and rich; gorgeously lifted, sweet, floral-soft scents develop followed by apple / pear fruitiness and vanilla wafer. Sublime. Svelte-smooth entry builds into a superb, fruity, semi-sweet palate: Ripe pear, vanilla wafer and gently pulsing spices are delivered with dazzling purity and balance. The finish is clean, juicy and fresh, like biting into perfectly ripened nashi pear. The aftertaste buzzes with staying power, trailing off with dried coconut, cocoa and vanilla. Just so pure and poised. A must-try Irish whiskey experience. 46% Alc./Vol.

It’s taken Irish Distillers a long time to respond to the pounding it’s taken from Cooley but it’s back in the ring with two wonderful pot still whiskeys. The family behind Villa Le Corti, the Corsini Family, has an amazing history as winemakers that dates back to the 13th century making it one of the oldest Estates in Tuscany. Current custodian of the Corsini Empire is 22nd generation Duccio Corsini.
Deep dark red core with black toned edges and a red to dark red hue. Delightful aromatics of red currant and red cherry infused with rose petals show wonderful intensity out of the glass complimented by some red liquorice, Mediterranean herb, spicy cedar and earth notes. A rich chorus of ripe red currant, red liquorice and red cherry fruits unravel across the mid weighted palate. Finessed and polished it has seamlessly integrated, fine grained tannins and a beautiful underlying freshness. Terrific length with infusions of fresh Mediterranean herbs, earth and spicy cedar extending through what is a long sweeping finish.

The Villa Le Corti Principe Corsini 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva Cortevecchia (made with organic fruit) boasts a very direct and intense bouquet that remains beautifully balanced and elegant at the same time. Cherry, blueberry and cassis are presented in clear tones, as promised by this excellent vintage. There are lighter background notes of grilled rosemary and blue flower. This Riserva knocks it out of the park with fresh acidity and general brightness. Drink 2024-2036.

Brilliant pale straw colour with green tinged edges and a watery hue. Elevated aromas of pear, Jonathan apple and quince fill the nostrils followed by whiffs of musk and honeysuckle. Rich, juicy and texturally full, the palate is awash with pear, ripe apple and musk favours. Gentle honeysuckle and ginger elements linger underneath. Puech-Haut’s lighter coloured style of rosé is akin to what the French call "Vin Gris", usually enjoyed with Summer Mediterranean dishes like grilled fish, tian (a cold vegetable flan) and salads, but also as an aperitif with finger foods. Made as a "Rose de presse" (juice straight off the press), the grapes are pressed rather than macerated (as is the case in a "Rose de Saignee").
Chateau Puech Haut employ Grenache and Cinsault for this wine, which is fermented in thermo regulated stainless steel over twenty days to increase flavour intensity.
Gorgeously textured and wonderfully intense with a long super moreish finish.
Very pale salmon pink tinged colour. Delighting the olfactory senses are fragrant aromas of peach, raspberry, strawberry and pomegranate which mix with whiffs of musk and wet stone. Gorgeously textured with a supple feel, and wonderfully intense, the palate is layered with peach, raspberry, strawberry and musk flavours. Stony back drop with flashes of pomegranate also making an appearance. Fresh acidity with a long slippery finish that makes a second glass impossible to resist. Blissful Summer drinking.

Querciabella Chianti Classico has been the centrepiece of the estate’s winemaking operations since the onset. First produced in 1974, it consistently receives high levels of critical acclaim. Maturation took place in fine to extra fine grained oak barriques (225 Litre) and tonneaux (500 Litre), and partially in larger oak vessels for a period of 14 months, before the final blend is assembled. It’s then given a further 12 months bottle age before release.
Refined and energetic, this delicious Chianti strikes a beautiful balance between varietal purity, vibrancy and depth.

Deep dark red black core with a red to dark red hue. Attractive red currant and red cherry aromas are trailed by some red liquorice, earth, subtle tobacco and spicy dried herb notes. Mid weighted, the palate is layered with expressive red currant, red liquorice and red cherry fruits which meld into a dusty earth, dried herb, tobacco and spicy cedar back drop. Energetic acidity and fine grained tannins impart a slight chalky feel yet there’s an overwhelming refinement to the wine. Long, savoury, red fruited finish.

Pouring a youthful jeweled ruby color, the 2022 Chianti Classico is entirely Sangiovese from Greve, Lamole, and Radda. (The producers have stopped using fruit from Gaiole in the blend, as they are concentrated on vines closer to home, including the higher elevation site in Lamole for freshness.) The nose is very pretty and fruity, with aromas of mixed berries, crushed flowers, and sweet earth. Medium to full-bodied, it’s elegant on the palate, with a fresh feel, fine tannins, and a refined texture. It is elegant all the way through and is going to offer a lot of pleasure over the next 10-12 years. Drink 2025-2037.

Concentrated and powerful yet tightly wound with a long zingy finish.
Since it’s establishment in 2009, winemaker John Hughes has in a very short period of time established RieslingFreak as one of the country's preeminent producers of the variety. Wine critic Mike Bennie describing it as ‘the definitive Riesling project in Australia.’ The 2025 vintage was one of meagre yields due to frost and lack of rainfall, however, the quality was remarkable delivering wines with terrific intensity of flavour and electric acidity.
Brilliant water like colour with green tinged edges. Intense lime and citrus scents burst out of the glass followed by some green apple, orange rind, talc and chalky mineral notes. Concentrated and powerful yet tightly wound, the zippy palate is flooded with lime, citrus and orange rind fruits which are sculptured by crisp, steely acidity. Subtle green apple, chalky talc and flinty mineral elements linger through the long, tense and zingy finish.

Includes 15% whole bunches with maturation taking place in a 50/50 mix of 1-year-old puncheons and seasoned hogsheads.

Captivating scents of violet, red cherry, strawberry and red plum are interwoven with fresh herb, dried meat, forest floor and spicy cedar notes. Rich yet light and supple in its flow, the palate is decorated with ripe cherry, red plum and red liquorice fruits. Strawberry, infusions of dried herbs, forest floor and spicy cedar elements unfold across the back half. Amply powered, it has fresh acidity, polished tannins and a long, elegant red fruited finish that carries a silky feel.

A quiet and seductive bouquet of wild strawberry, dried rose and just a hint of Earl Grey tea. Medium bodied; the fruit spreads evenly across the palate. The tannins are subtle, understated and persistent, as is the finish. Rob Hall hasn't missed a beat in '25. Drink now and over the next six to eight years. Drink by 2034.

Growing up in Healesville, a young Rob Hall did some summer work in the vineyards during the early to mid nineties before taking up full time work at Yarra Ridge then Punt Road. From 2002 to 2011 he was the winemaker at Mount Mary, it wasn’t until 2014 that he took the leap and began his own operation.
2025 was another excellent year in the Yarra Valley, the weather was close to perfect right through the season, resulting in a fairly early harvest, producing wines with lovely aromatics and wonderful intensity. This Pinot Noir was sourced from five vineyards – Harriet’s, Full Moon, Boat O’Craigo, Nenagh Park and Yarrawalla with only 10% of the Harriet’s component being whole bunch. Maturation was predominantly in seasoned hogheads and puncheons (300 & 500L).
Richly fruited, supple and expansive, this is yet another great value Pinot from the ever reliable Rob Hall.
Red to dark red colour with black toned edges and a light red hue. Perfumed wafts of violet, red to dark cherry, strawberry and subtle anise greet the nostrils. Some subtle rhubarb, bramble, fresh herb and vanillin spice notes are also evident. Richly fruited, supple and polished, the moreish palate is flooded with a wave of red to dark cherry, strawberry, anise and delicate rhubarb flavours. Lending further interest are some dried herb, bramble, forest floor and spice elements. Both powerful and expansive, it has velvety tannins and a long, seductive finish.

...Despite the plus points to this rum I still feel that overall it is all just a little bit to light and to clean. The only real evidence of “rum” comes in the finish which is slightly leathery with a note of tobacco. I really enjoy more fruity white rums such as Chairman’s Reserve White Label and Appleton Special. This is probably handy for a bartender needing a more easy going rum. A big age statement for Cuban Rum, Ron Santiago's Extra Añejo 11 year old blends the sweetness of sugarcane molasses grown in the Oriente province in the South East of the island with the skillful touch of the Maestros del Ron Cubano. Aged in white oak, there's a nice balance of mature notes including estery tropical fruits, coconut, delicate vanilla and almond, with the sweetness perfectly balanced by moderate spices. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... If you are looking to explore the “lighter” side of rum. I would recommend this as a sipper. It’s quite easy going but at the same time has enough going on to remain interesting. DESCRIPTION: This organic twist on the Daiquiri uses honey to balance the sharp lime with a hint of salt to season. This provides a cocktail with lasting depth.
INGREDIENTS:
60ml Ron Santiago de Cuba Extra Añejo 11 years old
45ml salted honey syrup (2:1)
20ml lime juice
METHOD: To make the salted honey syrup combine 2 parts honey to one-part warm water and add a pinch of salt. Stir until well combined. Then shake all of the ingredients over ice and strain into a chilled coupette glass.

From the smallest member of Diageo’s roughly thirty strong distillery portfolio. We've always enjoyed the lightness and freshness that comes with this bottling, which is not without a touch of honey. It's slow fermented and the distillation is the same, maximising copper contact and producing a new make that's fruity and grassy and well suited to sherry casks. A fresh pour opens with suggestions of cheesecake, granita biscuits, straw bale and poached pears on the nose, following in a light to medium bodied, well-rounded malt; Mid palate candied fruitiness arrives with a honeyed glaze while the finish turns mildly grassy. The final stages are gently spicy, crisp and appley. When you need a dram that's soft and a little sweet - think Highland Park, less the peat. 40% Alc./Vol.

The area in the North of the River Dee was one of the most popular places for illicit ‘moonshine’ distilleries. In 1826, after the introduction of the Excise Act, one operator by the name of James Robertson applied for a licence to produce legally. Other ‘moonshine’ distillers considered him a traitor and set fire to his business. Determined, Robertson constructed another distillery, naming it “Lochnagar” after a nearby mountain. When this venture also burnt to the ground in 1841, Robertson too abandoned the whisky world. Four years later, John Begg built a distillery South of the Dee, close to Balmoral castle (the summer residence of the Royal family). He named it “New Lochnagar”. When the distillery became operational, Begg wrote a letter to the private secretary of the royal family, inviting their Royal Highnesses to experience the delights of the distillery. The very next day, both Prince Albert and his wife, Queen Victoria paid an impromtu call and were impressed enough to allow Begg to rename the distillery 'Royal Lochnagar', making him official supplier to the court. The Royal connection had an immediate effect on the sales and the price of the whisky. It has also seen the distillery play host to a string of famous visitors, many of them British prime ministers taking an hour or so off between meetings with the monarch of the day at Balmoral. Completely renewed in 1967, Royal Lochnagar today preserves its traditional, iconic character with an approach to whisky manufacture that is thoroughly hands-on and artisanal. Fermentation times are long, ensuring that every last morsel of character is extracted from the mash, and the distillery's short, stubby stills maximise the broad flavour spectrum. The distillery uses a mix of third-fill Sherry butts and third-fill American Oak hogsheads. The result is one of the fruitiest, richest Single Malts on the market. Traditionally nearly all the malt production from Lochnager was used in the famous VAT 69 blend. Today the majority is bottled as single malt.

A pioneer in the champagne trade, the Ruinart House has stood out due to its unique know-how and history. The son of Nicolas Ruinart, brother of Dom Ruinart, himself named Nicolas, opened the companies first account book on 1st september 1729 with the following declaration, “in the name of God and the Saint Virgin shall this book be commenced.” This entry was to be the official act establishing France’s First Champagne House.
Made in the pure Ruinart tradition exclusively from the Chardonnay grape, Ruinart Blanc de Blancs reflects perfect harmony. Its striking luminosity is further enhanced by the clear glass bottle, a replica from an 18th Century model.
Good white creamy mousse with pale gold base wine colour and a very fine bead displaying excellent persistence. The nose delivers a superb complex sniff with a distinct yeasty top note followed by aromas of baked bread, brioche, cashew and toast. The palate is quite rich for a Blanc de Blancs displaying very refined flavours of baked bread, yeast lees and cashew with a light toast overlay. Creamy texture with excellent length. Clean crisp dry finish with long aftertaste of baked bread, yeast less and cashew.

Keppell Smith's vision for Savaterre found its perfect home in 1996 when he planted vines on the golden-granite slopes of Beechworth. Since then, Savaterre has earned its place among Australia's elite for Chardonnay, thanks to that decomposed granitic loam soil and the altitude-driven climate of the Victorian Alps.
The 2024 vintage proved to be an exceptional, classic Beechworth season: long warm days and cool nights allowed for slow, even ripening. This perfect maturity was aided by a small crop per vine from the mature, close-planted vineyard, delivering a wine of incredible focus, precision, and finesse. Fermentation and maturation in French oak barrels seamlessly integrated depth and complexity into its structure, resulting in a tightly coiled, seductive Chardonnay built to beautifully evolve.

It's a slow reveal, all the better to take in a wine both plush in fruit and fine in structure, citrusy fresh and oak defined, savoury influenced and varietally pure. Complex, tangy fresh aromas arrive Beechworth-bright before leading into a tightly packed, concentrated palate of lemon citrus, grapefruit, stone fruits and toasted almonds creamily textured with honeysuckle aromatics. This is a richer iteration of Savaterre Chardonnay with not much in the way of struck match (though, granted, that can sometimes vary between bottles in my experience). It’s glossy and creamy but has firm cut of grapefruit acidity, there’s fine powdery grip to texture, a savoury nutty element and something of a sour yoghourt flavour, honey nougat, spicy oak, a mix of nectarine, pear, lime and melon with a tangy and savoury finish of outstanding length. Sazerac Rye dates back to the 1800’s and symbolizes the tradition and history of New Orleans saloons. It was at the Sazerac Coffee House on Royal Street where local patrons were served toddies made with Rye whiskey and Peychaud’s Bitters. The libation became know as the “Sazerac” and America’s first branded cocktail was born. This 6 year-old version of the famous Sazerac Rye is produced at the scenic Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort (probably using a 'barely legal' rye recipe), home of numerous other whiskies such as Eagle Rare 10 year-old, Eagle Rare 17 year-old, Blanton's, Rock Hill Farms and George T. Stagg. The beautifully designed bottle harks back to the pre Civil War days when barrels of whisky were poured into ornately engraved decanters supplied by the distiller, displaying the colour of the whiskey to good effect. In what seems to be a company tradition, the price is nowhere near the kind of money many other ryes command.
Our re-tasting since last visiting this stalwart in 2008 found moderate aromas suggesting caraway and oak shavings then green apple, orange zest, wood spice and sweet nutty/vanilla notes. This is a soft, plush 'fruity' style without compromising depth of flavour - dried apricots, apply rye and white pepper come counterpointed by light vanilla oak. The keynote grain isn't aggressive like some others, while the balance is near perfect, and there's dark rye bread, more pepper and a subtle muddled mint refreshing the fade. In short - Sazerac is a broad appeal whiskey with enough mid-palate sweetness, complexity and kick to convert one-eyed Bourbon nuts - or even the odd malt enthusiast. Keep this as the 'proper' choice for a Manhattan or Sazerac Cocktail. 45% Alc./Vol.

'Glansa' which is Old Norse for "shining storm-laden skies" is a gently smoky Scapa initially aged in first-fill American oak casks, then finished in casks that previously contained peaty whisky. Compared to the unpeated Skiren, you get more of a saline / ocean breeziness to the nose; the peat is earthy but slight, the barley defined by orchard fruits; It's also fuller and spicier than its sibling, the peat adding an extra layer, weaving its way through the honeyed malt, followed by hints of sweet tea biscuits and baked fruits through the sprightly, tangy finish. This presents a dainty, airy kind of smoke, akin to Ardmore, or Scapa's famous neighbour - a good thing, as the distillate's finer points could easily be smothered. This has been sensitively handled. The result is a delicious 'aperitif' island style, possibly unique to Orkney. 40% Alc./Vol.

[+/- 2021 bottling]...With an NAS at 40% vol., we don't speak much. It seems that this is finished in ex-peaty-malt casks, which is just in-cask blending in our book. They should call these (many do that these days) blended malts, no? Colour: gold. Nose: there, naturally, this rather works, with a feeling of Ardmore and some rather lovely whiffs of meadow flowers and lighter compost. I'm even finding notes of fino sherry (that mineral smoke) and fermented plums. Oh and bandages and ointments in the background. Mouth: a blended malt, rather on smoked coffee, with some cigar ashes and, once again, a rather smoky kind of sherry. We're extremely far from Scapa's light honeyed floralness, but indeed it's a fine drop. Good blended malt. Finish: I'm also finding a little mustard in this fine blended malt. More fino, that's great. Comments: congrats to the blenders, very fine piece of work. At 46% vol., this well-crafted in-cask blended malt would be a killer. Established in 1975, this little known estate is one Heathcote’s oldest and along with Jasper Hill and Mt Ida was one of the pioneering vineyards of the region. Further plantings were made in 1996, the dry grown vines from both vineyards now well established with deep roots in the mineral rich Cambrian soil. Winemaking is undertaken by the talented Mark Hunter from Sanguine Estate and maturation takes place in French oak barriques for a period of 18 months.

Opens with spectacular colour density featuring a super saturated pitch black heart along with an equally deep dark red black hue. Heady aromas of ripe blackberry, liquorice and dark chocolate fill the nostrils with spicy vanillin cedar, fennel and peppered earth notes also chiming in. Rich, concentrated and dense the full bodied palate is engulfed with succulent blackberry, liquorice and dark plum fruits which are framed by a muscular tannin structure. Relatively stern yet opulent in it’s feel, earth, spicy vanillin cedar, subtle dark chocolate and blackpepper elements lend further nuance. Deep and powerful it finishes long and juicy yet robust.

As is always the case with these 'Secret Signatorys', Macallan isn't stated on the label, however the ever-reputable whiskyfun.com have reviewed bottlings from the same "M" series and their classification and tasting compass points firmly towards Edrington's darling. Matured for 18 years in a first-fill sherry butt (presumably oloroso), this promises all those lovely rich aromas and flavours of dark fruits, chocolate, manuka honey and crème brulee that sherry heads consistently seek out. Few tasting notes are available on this batch, but hopefully that list extends to classic Macallan descriptors like orange marmalade, dried figs, cigars and no sulphur! Judging by reviews for other (M)s, it should be pretty darn good. Signatory's already reasonable asking price is made all the more sweet by direct import pricing. We've received a small share of the 658 numbered bottles produced, un-chillfiltered. 58.4% Alc./Vol.

A mix of heavy Wedderburn and medium bodied Plummer pot-still distillates, aged for up to 3 years and bottled at a potent strength. The Smith & Cross brand is steeped in tradition, both in terms of history and character. The name goes back to 1788, referencing an English trading company that was importing vast quantities of rum and sugar from Jamaica to the UK. The rum itself is described as "old fashioned", pre-dating the trend for sweetened styles that's so prevalent today. Hampden Estate's stills are famous for delivering funky notes like caramelised banana, tropical fruit and a complexing earthiness. Their rums are typically absent of chill filtration, excess dilution or added sugar. Hence, this is what you might call 'old-school' rum. It's exotic flavour profile and punchy strength have made it a bartender's favourite for Tiki cocktails, but you can also showcase its high esters in a classic Daiquiri or Mai Tai. The Kingston Negroni is a contemporary alternative, where Smith & Cross' baking spice notes mingle with red vermouth, while the rum's sweet molasses is balanced by the gentian-forward red bitters. In a similar vein, stir Cocchi Vermouth di Torino with Smith & Cross, a little maraschino and orange bitters and you have a Martinez with a genuine reggae beat!

...Smith & Cross is definitely not the sweeter newer style of rum which have been more prevalent since the 50’s and 60’s. It is no Ron Zacapa or Diplomatico. It is a million miles away from that. It is in many ways like Ronseal – it does exactly what it say on the tin (bottle). Smith & Cross make no allusions or false claims about their product. As a rum to recommend it's a difficult one you either like dunder heavy Jamaican rum or you don’t! I’ve had around 100ml of the stuff during this review and I can certainly feel it! The ABV obviously attributes to this! This is a good rum – well made and constructed and has no pretences about being anything other than an old fashioned hard hitting Jamaican pot still. Established in 1978 Stonier Vineyards was one of the pioneers on the Mornington Peninsula and has recently returned to being locally owned and run after a period of corporate ownership. The fruit for Stonier Pinot Noir is derived from a selection of estate and leased vineyards, the majority of which sit on the red volcanic basalt between Merricks and Red Hill. The high elevation (200m+) Red Hill vineyards are the primary component of this wine which provides the lovely lifted red fruit profile.
2025 is considered to be one the great vintages of the last 25 years for Mornington Peninsula.
Powerful, flavour packed and expansive – this is one moreish Mornington Pinot Noir.
Dark red core with black toned edges and a crimson red hue. Showing impressive intensity, the nose features fragrant dark cherry, strawberry and anise scents which are complimented by violet, bramble, forest floor and spicy dried herb notes. Rich, supple and expansive, the gorgeous palate is detailed with dark cherry, strawberry and more subtle anise flavours. Notions of spicy cedar, delicate forest floor and dried herbs unfold across the back half. Concentrated and powerful, it has seamlessly integrated, silky smooth tannins and a long moreish finish.

All the 2025 releases from Stonier have been reviewed to The Winefront site – well worth checking out – but I thought I’d include a note on this ‘standard’ release because it’s a contender for the Best Value Pinot Noir of 2026. I appreciate that $45 isn’t the usual price that you’d associate with value but in comparative Pinot Noir terms it qualifies.
I’ve been tasting and drinking Stonier Pinot Noir for a very long time – 30 years-ish – and this is the best standard Stonier Pinot Noir that I can recall. It’s a pearler. Its quality is so high because it’s more complex than the latest round capital gains tax changes, is beautifully interwoven with tannin, is juiced up with alarmingly more-ish fruit flavour and from start to finish, more to the point, it mounts the most coherent and articulate arguments int its favour. It tastes brilliant, it tastes interesting, it feels the goods and it lingers. I couldn’t be more on board.

Buy this, cellar it, drink it. I’ve loved this ‘standard’ Stonier Pinot Noir for decades but I dare say that this is the best release that I’ve tried. Sheesh. It’s complex, it’s cohesive, it’s balanced and it feels authentic, the latter both to its variety and to its region. Mostly and ultimately though it’s more-ish. It’s cherried and strawberried and plummy and sweet spiced, with soil or undergrowth notes interwoven. Tannin profile is top notch, and the balance between juicy drinkability and tension is so perfectly judged. Last year’s releases gave an excellent insight into the uptick of Stonier but this year’s releases take things up again. Drink 2026-2032+

'The lava of the Cuillins' - that's how Talisker, the Golden Spirit of Skye was described by one poetic taster: the only single malt from a spectacularly beautiful island of wild moorlands and dramatic mountain peaks known as the Cuillins. Built in Carbost in 1831 near 'Talisker House', the distillery has entertained such personalities as Boswell & Johnson. Another celebrity who enjoyed his Talisker was author, Robert Louis Stevenson, describing it in 1880 as 'king 'o' drinks'. Stevenson rightly recognised it as bearing similarities to both the Glenlivet and Islay malts. However, by taking 'the best of both worlds' so to speak, it achieved a unique style. In 1892 Roderick Kemp, a part owner sold his share to establish the now-immortal Macallan. Talisker has continued strong since under the ownership of Diageo. An individual malt that remains an island classic, Talisker invariably offers a great sniff. ...Another that should need no introduction. The thing to look for in Talisker, as with all smoky whiskies, is sweetness that gives the requisite balance to the drying effect of smoke. The 12 Year Old has won the award for World's Best Single Malt at the 2025 World Whiskies Awards, an honour it previously received in 2021 for Batch #4 of its 10 year old Cask Strength release. Billy Walker considers the 12 year old to be the heart of the core range with some of the very best virgin oak, Oloroso sherry and Pedro Ximenez casks selected. Other reviews... The Moscatel cask is mainly noticeable in the nose, where it pours out of the glass very sweet and sticky and light fruity (gooseberries, light grapes, star fruit, etc.). The fruit flavors integrate nicely into the light Glenallachie character without overwhelming the whisky. There is a slight spice in the finish, but it is much lighter than many of its distillery siblings. Overall, nice summer whisky with a lot of pressure and well-integrated alcohol. Whisky reviewers often say that modern day GlenAllachies are unashamedly 'cask-driven' - as opposed to emphasising the distillate. Precisely what that means and whether or not it's a criticism isn't something that's straightforward to answer or easy to quantify. At the end of the day, if something tastes good, most drinkers are not going to be nitpicking (especially when the price is right). Whether you think heavy barrel input is a plus or a minus, GlenAllachie's series of natural strength ten year olds have been the recipients of considerable praise, with Batch #4 awarded the ultimate accolade as "World's Best Whisky" at the World Whiskies Awards in 2021. From our own experience, there are plenty of people who appreciate the richness that these whiskies deliver, enhanced by a range of cask types, and not entirely sherry. For Batch #10, there’s an unspecified portion of red wine and virgin oak casks in the mix (in contrast to the 12 and the 15 year releases). Combine that with a high ABV and non chill filtration, and you have a flavour bomb that sweetens up with water. Normally these editions retail for around $200 in Australia. At direct import pricing, now is the time to buy!
Other reviews... a whisky that’s not exactly about showcasing the characteristics of the new make. Instead, Pedro Ximènez, Oloroso, red wine and virgin oak casks were used... This is seemingly all about the cask. Arriving on cracked black peppercorns, cloves, a touch of ginger and some mocha. Also peach pits, some cherry liqueur and eucalyptus. Somewhat vinous... A quintessential example of an engineered whisky. The GlenAllachie 10 Years Cask Strength Batch 10 is well-designed. It went on to become the world’s number one selling single malt brand, now with a triune of labels (the others being Glen Ord and Dufftown). A typically a soft and creamy whiskey – hence this year’s title - here you also get to experience Glendullan at full cask strength, with part of the maturation in French oak casks that previously contained White Burgundy (Chardonnay). Tasting from a 20ml sample yielded notes of digestif biscuits, delicate orchard fruit juiciness and drying oak - a simple yet effective combination that equates to a broad appeal sipper. 55% Alc./Vol.

It’s a rare achievement in this industry for a wine to maintain its price point for more than 20 years without sacrificing quality, even more so when it's priced under $10. But the Three Brothers Reunited Shiraz has done just that. Most new labels (particularly in the sub $20 category) start with a bang and over deliver in the first couple of vintages in an attempt to win new customer's loyalty. However, in follow up releases they often stretch expectations of quality in order to meet increased demand. Gradually the brand fades away as customers are disillusioned with what's become a lesser wine. Three Brothers, on the other hand, has made quality and consistency its number one priority, only gradually increasing production while growing a very loyal customer base that's made this our top selling red for over 20 years.
Juicy and silky textured this is a terrific, everyday drinking Shiraz for just $10.
Deep dark red black tinged colour with a dark red hue. Sailing out of the glass with impressive intensity are aromas of dark cherry, liquorice and dark plum which are interwoven with some scorched earth, vanillin spice and peppered dried herb notes. A touch lighter in weight than the 2019 vintage, the medium bodied palate is layered with rich, juicy dark plum, dark cherry and liquorice fruits which carry a silky flow. Subtle dried herb, scorched earth and pepper elements are threaded through the back half. Slightly grainy yet polished tannins with an amply fruited, pepper laced finish.

In Scottish terminology, ‘The Laird’ refers to the Lord of the Manor. This single vineyard Shiraz comes from an old vineyard in Marananga planted in 1958, a plot which remains the focus of envy amongst many of the region's winemakers. Previously owned and operated by the legendary Malcolm Seppelt, the vineyard was purchased by Torbreck in 2014 and is perfectly sited with the dry grown, original Barossa clone vines facing south east. The berries are typically small and concentrated and usually harvested in two separate passes.
The French oak selected for the maturation of this wine is considered to be some of the finest in the world. Referred to as Dominique Laurent's 'Magic Casks', the wood is selected from the incredibly tiny and highly prized Troncais forest. The staves are hand split in the French tradition and twice as thick as machine split staves. As a result of the extra thickness the barrels are able to sustain an extended maturation process due to the tighter porosity that comes with the extra wood. Maturation took place in the new hand crafted French oak barriques for a period of 36 months. The barrels were stored in their own temperature controlled, ancient stone shed. In short, no expense has been spared.
An immense palate staining Shiraz that combines intoxicating aromatics with out of this world levels of richness and explosive power.
Spectacular density of colour featuring an impenetrable inky black heart along with an equally deep black dark red hue. Soaring out of the glass with tremendous potency are black cherry, liquorice, dark plum and dark chocolate aromas. Toasty vanillin oak, earthy mocha, whiffs of boot polish and spice ensue. Unbelievably rich, dense and thick, the palate rocks V8 Bi Turbo like torque, decadently coated with a liqueur like concentrate of blackberry, dark to black plum, liquorice and earthy mocha flavours. Showing less toast than recent vintages, it still possesses a strong vanillin oak component yet remains perfectly balanced. Fennel, dark chocolate and spice elements lend further complexity. It’s statuesque tannin structure largely absorbed by the sheer weight and density of fruit. Incredibly expansive, deep and voluminous it concludes with mind blowing length.

The 2021 The Laird is from the Laird vineyard, planted in 1958. This is dark, dense and brooding in its styling, showcasing a depth that the Forebear expresses differently. The latter vineyard (the Hillside vineyard) is almost a hundred years older than the Laird, and I find this to be a curious and interesting fact that bears little on the quality of the wine but heavily impacts/defines the character. The first time the fruit was sourced was in 2004, but it was 2005 that the first Laird was produced; the vineyard was finally purchased in full by Torbreck in 2014. The vineyard is split in its soil types, with black and red clay east to west, and the two sections are picked at different times, as the fruit ripens differently. So, to the wine. Aromatically the wine leads with cocoa and cigar, armchair leather and old books. The palate follows this same smoking-room character and veritably stains the palate in flavor and length. This is a wine of enormous impact, one that lingers and stays in the mouth for ages after the wine has gone. The wine is moody and late-night in its vibe. 15.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. The Woodcutter’s Shiraz is sourced from Torbreck’s younger vineyards located in the prime Barossa sub regions of Marananga, Greenock, Seppeltsfield, Gomersal, Moppa, Lyndoch and Ebenezer.
Fruit is hand harvested and fermented in a mixture of cement, wooden and stainless steel vats for 6-7 days. It is then basket pressed to well-seasoned hogsheads and French oak foudres where it’s matured for 12 months.
Hands down one of Barossa’s most consistent wines, the 2024 Woodcutter’s delivers an abundance of rich, succulent fruit with Torbreck’s signature flamboyance and power.
Impenetrable inky black heart with a very deep dark purple black hue. Wafting out of the glass with classic Torbreck hedonism are dark plum, freshly crushed black cherry and liquorice aromas which are trailed by some vanillin cedar, scorched earth and pepper notes. Rich, densely concentrated and voluptuous, propelled across the multi layered palate is a thick coating of dark plum, liquorice, blackberry and black cherry fruit. Made entirely from Tyrrell’s famous HVD vineyard, these dry-grown blocks were planted in 1984 and 2003 and together they produce a modern style that has both richness and finesse.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a greenish tinge around the outskirts and a watery hue. Elevated white peach and nectarine scents intermingle with dried honey, cashew, biscuity nougat and spice notes. Rich fleshy white peach, nectarine and dried honey flavours are layered across the medium bodied palate. One that proclaims to be the crème de la crème of PX’s and with six centuries of sherry production under their belts, Valdespino can lay claim to being one of the oldest sherry houses in the region. In a process called Soleo, after harvesting, the grapes are sun dried for two weeks to concentrate the sugar and turn the grapes into raisins. After partial fermentation of the must the wine is fortified and then enters the soleras where it’s aged for between 10-12 years in American oak casks.
A Magnificent Black Sherry
Deep sienna brown colour with deep olive green hue. Wonderful nose filled with the aroma of toffee, molasses, spice and brandied ripe raisins. The palate is a viscous treasure with its rich luscious texture and oil like consistency. Totally mouthfilling flavours of spice, honey, toffee and crushed dried raisins fill the mouth. With six centuries of sherry production under their belts, Valdespino lay claim to being one of the oldest sherry bodegas in the region.
Pedro Ximenez is often referred to as “Black Sherry” due to its dense, dark colour. This is a superb example of the style made entirely from the Pedro Ximenez grape and is a wonderful pairing for chocolate dishes of any sort (or that ‘special’ mid year Christmas celebration being the perfect wine with Christmas pudding). The wine has the viscosity of oil. Very dark sienna brown colour with olive green hue. Superb nose of mollasses, treacle, crushed dried honeyed raisins. Rich and luscious, totally mouthfilling with a silky, oily texture which disolves into honeyed toffee. Layers of treacle and caramel add further depth and complexity to the wine. Sweet, yet clean finish with exceptionally long aftertaste.

An increasingly rare release. According to Chuck Cowdery via Whiskey Advocate, the Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye has been a 50/50 combination of Medley and Cream of Kentucky rye whiskeys. It was put into steel tanks years ago and is being drawn down for each fall release. The mash bill is not stated. 47.8% Alc./Vol.

Vasse Felix is one of Margaret River’s pioneering estates. Produced every year since 1972, this is an archetypal expression of Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon from the outstanding 2023 vintage.
Beautifully refined and seamless with a long, impeccably finessed finish.

A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Malbec matured in French oak barriques (34% new) for a period of 18 months. Pitch black core with a dark red black tinged hue. Elevated scents of blackcurrant, black olive, red liquorice and mulberry move through the nostrils with impressive intensity. Lending further complexity are cigar box, subtle earth and bay leaf notes. Rich and concentrated yet beautifully refined, a seamless flow of blackcurrant, mulberry, liquorice, cedary tobacco, earthy black olive and spicy bay leaf flavours are layered across the mid weighted palate. Terrific depth and power with perfectly integrated, fine grained tannins providing a sturdy structure across the long, impeccably finessed finish.

This vintage turned out so many elegant, compelling wines – both red and white – and here’s another to add to the collection. A deep, dark garnet, with all the best aromas and flavours the variety can muster, yet there’s a restraint to this. It’s classy with finely shaped tannins and lithe acidity. A rich and powerful yet wonderfully harmonious and refined Margaret River Chardonnay.
Brilliant pale straw colour with highlights of green around the edges and a watery hue. Streaming out of the glass are white peach, nectarine and gentle cashew scents complimented by some biscuity nougat and spice notes. Rich and gently creamy in its textural feel yet wonderfully refined, the mid weighted palate is layered with fleshy white peach, nectarine, dried honey and cashew flavours. Biscuity nougat, subtle ginger and spice elements also chime in. Perfectly harmonious, it has a long driving finish.

White peach, grapefruit and preserved lemon with an oyster shell briny note and grilled nuts, so there’s a savoury element, too. A great showcase of Margaret River’s ability to make dense, dank and highly enjoyable Chardonnay. This wine is undeniably from the region. It speaks of the southwest’s oceans, people and the infamous Gin Gin clone. Green mango, apricot kernel, tangerine zest and candied orange peel. Power and wild elegance. In the mouth, the fruit is deep, sticky and salty. The acid frames the wine, with fruit, phenolic grip and generosity draped over it. Dried cumquat, spiced lime sorbet, mandarin oil, wet pavement and struck match. It has an old man’s strength, but childlike surprise. A lot is going on. And I’m all about it. Drink 2026-2036.

The 2024 Chardonnay is mealy, nutty and spicy on the nose, with a framing of subtly toasty oak. In the mouth, the wine comes together, showing a textural creaminess and wide complexity, while the purity of the Margaret River acidity races across the palate at pace. It was wild fermented and matured in French barrique (30% new), with a total élevage of 15 months, including five in tank prior to bottling. This is routinely a superb wine, offering complexity and depth at a reasonable price point. The 2024 vintage was challenging, as it was hot and dry (breaking records in both categories); however, in a global context, it remained no more than moderate in its extremes. The whites, if anything, show a little firmness in their structure, given the slightly earlier picking—a decision no doubt undertaken in order to preserve fruit quality and natural acidities. But this wine feels both balanced and healthy in its fruit condition. It is warmly recommended, as usual. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2026-2034.

Alongside its official bottlings, Beenleigh has begun a collaboration with Europe's La Maison du Whisky and the acclaimed independent bottler, Velier. After two very interesting previous releases (the 2006 15 year old and the 2015 five year old), Beenleigh is following up with a 2013 Single Vintage. Made from molasses produced and processed in Queensland and fermented for 3 - 4 days, the rum was (unusually) 'reverse distilled': First in a single column and then re-distilled in a pot still, similar to those found in Guyana at Demerara Distillers Ltd. It was subsequently aged for a decade in ex-bourbon casks at the distillery in Eagleby, in Queensland's tropical climate, with an angel's share of >25%. This new reference is quite unique in putting Australian rum on the world map. Expect something powerful and spicy. Bottled in 2023, no sugar has been added. 59% Alc./Vol.
Notes from the bottlers... Nose : Fresh and expressive. Russian leather, prune kernel, grapefruit, rosewater, and sumac. Rich, concentrated and creamy textured with a long beautifully shaped finish.

Walnut Block’s Chardonnay, planted in 1996 with the Mendoza clone, is known for its low yields and ‘hen and chicken’ fruit set which provides a high skin-to-juice ratio, thus resulting in a wine that possesses both depth and concentration of flavour. Maturation takes place in French 500 litre oak puncheons with wild yeasts from the vineyard providing a natural fermentation. The wine is left to develop in barrels for a period of 12 months.
Brilliant pale straw colour with highlights of green around the outskirts and a watery hue. Expressive white peach, nectarine, dried honey and cashew scents sail from the glass with ample intensity followed by some biscuity nougat and spice notes. Rich, concentrated and creamy textured, the palate is layered with white peach, nectarine and dried honey flavours. Cashew, biscuity nougat and spice elements are interspersed throughout the back half. Beautifully shaped it finishes long with a lick of underlying freshness.

West Cape Howe's Old School Chardonnay is made the way Chardonnay used to be – rich, textured and full-flavoured. Sourced from specific vineyard blocks in Mount Barker, the wine was barrel fermented and matured in French oak (20% new) for a period of 10 months. Extended lees contact with fortnightly stirring and full malolactic fermentation further enhanced the wines texture. 2025 was an outstanding vintage with near perfect growing conditions delivering fruit of spectacular quality.
Rich, viscously textured and full flavoured, this is classic old school Chardonnay delivered at a dirt cheap price.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a luminous green tint to the surrounds and a watery hue. Engulfing the nostrils are intense aromatics of ripe peach, nectarine and honeycomb with hints of crème brulee, subtle bacon fat and spicy nougat also chiming in. Rich, mouth filling and displaying great viscosity, fleshy peach, nectarine, creme brulee, nougat, honeycomb and spicy butterscotch flavours are layered across the palate. Creamy textured, a lick of fresh acidity chips in to provide balance. Concludes long, full and round with a dash of spice. Sensational value!
