It smells of pears and oyster shells; it tastes of nectarines, grapefruit, cedar-spice and mineral; it finishes with such an emphatic burst of fruit that its quality feels instantly upgraded. How or why this wine is only $26 I do not know. This release will need a bit of time in the bottle to eally blossom but the power, structure, length and indeed X-factor place it in rare air once again. Drink 2028-2035+.

Winemaker Franco d’Anna regularly fashions some of the best value Pinot Noir’s and Chardonnay’s out of the Yarra Valley and the 2024 releases are no exception.
Red to dark red colour with black toned edges and a vibrant red hue. Perfumed like aromas of violet, wild cherry, strawberry and anise stream out of the glass with wonderful intensity. Some bramble, forest floor and spicy dried herb notes ensue. Delicious wild cherry, strawberry and anise flavours are supple yet simultaneously fresh in their feel across the palate. Supplementing the fruit are infusion of fresh herbs, delicate bramble, forest floor and spice. Polished tannins and lively acidity with a long, energetically juicy finish.

Red fruit, cherry, a little earthy, with some cinnamon oak showing, and sarsaparilla. It’s a more fruity and bouncy expression of Hoddles Pinot, some grainy chew to tannin, a bit of sap and orange rind, something of a ferrous edge, with a stiff tannic finish of good length. Needs a bit of time to come around. It’s maybe a little more robust and fruity than is usual for this wine, though it’s still good. Drink 2026-2034.

Making a well rounded entrance onto the palate are flavours of pear, red apple and quince. Tangy acidity with some blood orange and spice elements lingering underneath. Brimming with energy it has a dry, refreshing finish.

From two plots – one picked early with the later seeing more skin contact. A pale, bright cured salmon colour. Delicately perfumed with its aromas of red apple, cranberry, orange zest and a touch of rose petal. Mouth-filling and flavoursome, this finishes with a touch of tannin on the satisfying and long finish. You'd be hard pushed to find a better gris than this at the price. Drink by 2029.

The best Pinot Gris in Australia is also the best value. That was the line that came to mind when I first tasted this wine. I’d have to go back through my records to see if this wine is actually my favourite Australian gris but fair to say a) that it’s right up there and b) that it’s an absolute ripper. All for 26 bucks. It has a copper-pink blush to its colour, it has genuine mouthfeel and/or texture, it delivers flavour in an easy-going way and yet it’s all straightened up by well-judged acidity. It also runs long through the finish. I don’t rave about gris too often. I’m raving about this one. I even suspect that it will be a better drink again in a year or two.

A pretty pink-orange hue, delicate as a wine but with good grip and light chalky pucker. Rose water, rose hip tea, pomegranate juice and a big squish of red-skinned pear and light juniper berry notes. Delicious. It’s a distinctly textural wine but attractively cool and fine boned. An elevated expression from the variety in a restrained way. Drink 2025-2029.

The name behind the famous Ron Abuelo brand, Distilleria Don Jose was founded by Don Jose Varelo Blanco as the Republic of Panama's first sugar mill in 1908. Nearly three decades later his three sons persuaded him to establish a distillery. In 1936, he fulfilled that dream. The third generation has since stepped in, developing proprietary yeast cultures. Silky smooth and soft on the nose, the aromas conjure honey drizzled buckwheat pancakes, candied pineapple, hints of papaya and light molasses. Almost Jamaican in its insistence on dark, heavy fruits, the noticeable alchohol, mouthfilling mid-palate and lengthy bittersweet finish makes this feel north-Caribbean more than South American. An exceptionally powerful Sangiovese with energetic red fruit sculptured by chiselled tannins and lively acidity.
In the 1950s, the father of current winemaker Paolo de Marchi purchased the adjoining hamlets of Isole and Olena and their estates in the Tuscan commune of Barberino Val d'Elsa. Paolo entered the business in 1976 and the quality of the estate’s wines improved rapidly after decades of sharecropping. Paolo de Marchi is one of the region's kings of the Sangiovese grape and at a time when Chianti was a blended wine it was, he that stepped out to produce wines that were 100% Sangiovese. Cepparello is the true embodiment of a ‘Super Tuscan’ wine and one of Italy's most iconic wines.
Deep dark red black in colour with a dark red hue. The aromatically gorgeous nose is blessed with a kaleidoscope of red to dark currant, dark cherry, red liquorice and violet scents. Dried herb, subtle tobacco, earth and spice notes lend further nuance. Delicious, energetic red to dark cherry, red currant and red liquorice fruits are sculptured by chiselled tannins and lively acidity. Exceptionally powerful, it has a tense, muscular feel with the back half complexed by notions of dried herbs, tobacco, earth and spice. Finishes fresh and slightly grippy with outstanding length.

Rich, incredibly dense and voluptuous, every corner of the mouth is engulfed by a super concentrate of dark plum, liquorice and blackberry fruits which are infused with smoky fennel elements. Dark chocolate, dried herb and peppered earth characters unfold across the expansive back half. Despite it’s overwhelming opulence, it shows ample focus and possesses silky smooth yet structured tannins. Enormously powerful and explosive, it finishes with prodigious length.

In a world of wood-aged spirits distilled from raw materials throughout the year, Armagnac stands out as a product of viticulture, subject to annual growth cycles and variations inherent to 'vintages'. Blending multiple harvests to create a consistent house style remains common, however vintage-dated Armagnacs are another thing - distilled from a single harvest, grapes are moulded by the year’s climatic conditions, partly determining outturn and quality. Vines are cultivated to obtain acidic wines, low in alcohol, resulting in fruity and floral eaux-de-vie. Most vintages are potentially marketable, however it's not a standard practise. Eaux-de-vie from a single year requires particular care and attention. Distillation and ageing must be adapted to capture the individual character of the distillate, and the Cellar Master must decide on the period it should spend in new oak. The minimum is ten years (unlike blends), but if the Armagnac is deemed capable of extended ageing, it might mean 20, 50 or even 100 years in barrel. Thus, with experience and patience, these bottlings can enter the realm of top-tier spirits.
Connoisseurs love Vintage Armagnacs because they have the ability to surprise - or at the very least - deliver more distinctive profiles than a mass blended brandy. Producers classify their diversity into five primary tastes – spices, fruits, bakery, floral, and green – with three different weights, ranging from “fine, light, and easy to drink” to “classic, rich, and well-balanced,” up to the "more powerful and expressive" vintages.
Because they're prominently labelled with the year of production, these gems have become hugely popular as gifts whereby birthdays and anniversaries can be marked by a singular bottle - a way to turn back the clock via a liquid time capsule, rekindle memories and reflect. If you're lucky enough to secure a Vintage Armagnac but aren't ready to open it, store it upright so the alcohol doesn't attack the cork, in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight. Once opened, there's no hurry to finish it. These spirits don't oxidise quickly like a wine or Vintage Port, but they are best consumed within a few years, as recommended by the BNIA (Bureau National Interprofessionnel de l’Armagnac).

Armagnac is France's oldest brandy, recognised since the Middle Ages for its therapeutic properties. It came into its own in the 15th century, with trade peaking in the 1800s. The region's vineyards were subsequently destroyed by phylloxera, only to be replanted at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1909 a decree was issued under the presidency of a local boy, President Fallières, delimiting the region permitted to produce the brandy, finally defining the Armagnac Appellation Contrôlée and its three regions in 1936.
At Janneau, the oldest of the great Armagnac houses, the spirit is distilled in two different ways: "Armagnacais" (single, continuous distillation) and "Double Distillation" which involves pot stills. In the latter, wine flows from a vat to the first still acting as the cooling agent and allowing the vapours to condense. This first product is called "brouillis" and is distilled again, however the liquid at the very beginning and end of the process (called the "head & tail") is left out as it contains some impurities. Only the heart – that part which achieves the desired quality – is kept. The freshly distilled Armagnac is clear, decidedly fruity with occasional plum, green apple and vanilla notes.
The XO is the brand's flagship expression, blending Baco and Ugni Blanc eaux-de-vie from Bas-Armagnac and Ténarèze. While the youngest liquid in the composition is ten years old, others have been resting in oak for more than three decades. Expect aromas of candied plum, reine-claude plum, oak and red fruits and intense but well-balanced flavours hinting at oak, quince and sour cherries with a spicy finish. 40% Alc./Vol.

The fruit for this Shiraz is sourced from Kalleske’s certified organic Moppa vineyard with grapes coming from ten different blocks, the oldest of which was planted in 1961. Troy Kalleske reports that the 2024 growing season was near-perfect delivering average yields and superb quality fruit.
Small dollops of Petit Verdot and Viognier were included in the blend to provide added complexity and give the wine a contemporary edge. Maturation took place in a combination of approximately 20% new French, American and Hungarian oak hogsheads for 12 months.
Rich, dense and luxuriously silky in its flow, this is Barossa Shiraz at its seductive best.
Super saturated inky black heart with an equally deep black dark purple hue. Kalleske’s Greenock Shiraz is a single vineyard wine produced from low yielding vines on the Kalleske estate at Greenock, in the North-Western Barossa Valley. Cuttings for these vines originate from a vineyard planted on the property in the late 1800’s. It’s certified both organic and biodynamic with maturation taking place in a mix of 30% new American and French oak hogsheads for a period of 19 months.

Magnificent super saturated inky black colour with a very deep black dark red hue. Potent dark plum, liquorice and ripe black cherry scents engulf the nostrils followed by gently smoked vanillin oak, fennel and earthy mocha notes. Boasting incredible weight, density and textural volume, every crevasse of the palate is totally drenched in an all-consuming tidal wave of ripe black cherry, dark plum and liquorice fruit. King Car distillery was only brought on stream in 2005, but the sub-tropical climate means their whisky matures quickly, demonstrated by the 'Classic' NAS Kavalan winning Gold at the 2011 International Wine & Spirits Competition. Since then, it's cemented a reputation as one of the best value Asian malts on the market. The aromas are expressive with stewed pear / ripe stone fruit, cocoa and vanilla laced malt, rounded off with what seems like a dose of peat. There's a pleasant lightness to the palate, which, at the same time, doesn't lack concentration. Semi sweet cereal flavours and gentle spices feature in a well-balanced profile that's overall remarkably Speyside-like, ending mildy fruity, fresh and dry. Lagavulin, pronounced 'Lagga-voolin' (meaning 'the hollow where the mill is') is distinctive and powerful. Once described as 'liquid bandaid' for its strong medicinal character, it is perhaps the most assertive, complex and intensely dry of all the Islay malts. The palate overwhelms like an ocean wave with powerful peaty, salty overtones that re-emerge on the finish. The taste sensation lingers long in the mouth. On a cold wet winters night, there is perhaps no finer tonic than a dram of Lagavulin.
Other reviews… If anyone has noticed a slight change in Lagavulin, they would be right. The peat remains profound but much more delicate than before, while the oils appear to have receded. More about the Distillery... Lagavulin legitimately claims to being one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland. Situated in a small bay near the south coast of Islay, Lagavulin stands near the ruins of Dunyveg Castle. From here 1,000 Islaymen set sail to fight alongside Robert the Bruce at Bannockburn in 1314, and in this bay the Macdonalds maintained their power base as Lords of the Isles until finally driven out by the Campbells three centuries later. Distilling on the site is thought to date from as early as 1742. In the late 1700s it is believed that there were up to ten illicit stills operating in the district. The Lagavulin distillery officially became legal in 1816 and by the 1830s only two distilleries remained in the bay. In 1837 these distilleries unified under the Lagavulin title, coming under the ownership of the Graham brothers and James Logan Mackie. By 1875 the distillery was producing 75,000 gallons of whisky annually. The distillery's water is sourced from a nearby stream. The maturation warehouses are by the sea and when the seas are high, Lagavulin's outer walls are knee-high in salt water. Lagavulin uses Larch wood washbacks and individual onion-shaped stills with unique steep swan-necked lye pipes which the distillers claim profoundly affect the taste and refuse to change in any way.

Lagavulin have released several odd age statements including a nine and an eleven year old. This one debuted in mid 2019 at Fèis Ìle (the Islay Festival of Music and Malt) and was subsequently exclusive to travel retail. Matured in x-Bourbon and freshly-charred casks, the former add sweetness while the rejuvenated (STR) casks add spicy, woody notes. Like Caol Ila, youth is a good thing when it comes to Lagavulin. The style here is closer to the cask strength 12 year old than the standard 16, showing a similar 'mineral' dryness. Powerful aromas of seashore, kelp, a little iodine, baked citrus, oatmeal, light vanilla sweetness, cured meats and white pepper follow through with the kind of complexity and length you associate with this distillery: Fresh, peppery and unmistakably maritime, finishing with a dash of creamy vanilla before the aftertaste turns austere and minerally with lingering smoke. Classic, and with decent intensity at 43%. If you follow Islay, it would be be silly to skip it.
Other reviews... A rather cool and, on paper, legitimately good value bottling that seems to have just flown under the radar in recent years. Colour: gold. Nose: feels like a younger version of the 16yo, in a very good way and in a way that, for example, the 8yo does not. Lovely fat peat, dried seaweed, soot and earthy and rooty medicinal notes, a little seawater and a little hessian. Very smart! Mouth: excellent! Jammy, sweet, oily peat, tar extracts, seawater, iodine, sooty smoke, more tar and more of these hessian cloth notes. I also find some cured meats and various notes of herbs, ointments and salty liquorice. In some ways it is also even reminiscent of some old 12 year old Lagas at 43%, which is no mean feat! Finish: good length, very peaty, sooty, salty, tarry and earthy - terrific! Comments: extremely impressive, and especially for the price. I don't do bang for your buck bottles each month on WF, but this would almost certainly qualify. There is something charmingly old school in the use of 43% here, which works extremely well. Notes from distillery... Backed by an elusive softly fruity tang of bruised pears or mature white wine the top notes are naturally powerfully peaty and fresh-clean, with peat smoke, wood tar and antiseptic cream. Maritime hints that seem to emerge from within them suggest a walk on the beach in a fresh, salty sea breeze, with wafts of sweet seaweed and hemp rope. A drop of water suppresses the fruity notes and introduces the clean, fresh aromas of a mineral oil or a salt water rock pool. Spicy, smoky, warming and drying, with a deep intensity. There’s a pleasingly smoky aftertaste with a warming spiciness, which is calmed by the addition of water.

Aurélien Laherte’s Rose de Meunier is constructed from fruit grown in Côteaux Sud d'Épernay & Vallée De La Marne. 100% Pinot Meunier, grown ecologically on limestone and chalky soils. The base wine is made up of 60% direct pressed white wine, 30% maceration (destemmed fruit is left in contact with the skins for a short while) and 10% red wine, which is fermented and matured in a combination of large format foudres and oak barrels.
An exceptionally fine and very persistent bead weaves its way through a strawberry pink coloured base after a well formed frothy white mousse dissipates. Filling the nostrils are enticing strawberry and raspberry aromatics which are complexed by some baked bread, yeast lees and light toast notes. Delightfully sculptured by refreshing acidity, the palate has delicious raspberry and strawberry fruits racing across it with yeast lees, baked bread and chalky tones lending further interest. Finishes nervy, crisp and long.

Showing ample buoyancy over a pale straw coloured base is a lacy white mousse. A delicate yet very persistent bead finely threading its way through the wines core. Vividly sculptured the palate combines tension with intensity and richness delivering citrusy yeast lees and toasty baked bread flavours over a stimulating finish of subtle cashew and a chalky minerality. Considered "the easy-going one" in the Laphroaig line-up, the repackaged Oak Select is created from selected casks from each of the distillery's key styles (Quarter Cask, PX, Triple Wood, and 10 year old) with one exception - the heart of the spirit is reportedly sourced from a final maturation in virgin American oak. Seasoned whisky drinkers will be aware that new wood is rarely used in Scotch Whisky maturation. Instead, almost all whisky is put into casks that have previously held other beverages, usually Bourbon or Sherry. New wood tends to stamp its inherent flavours into the whisky in a definitive way. Can we expect this to be a battle between peat reek and coconut?

...The nose is reminiscent of freshly-treated decking, before some classic iodine creeps in. Water brings out geranium, pollen, and damp leather. Undoubtedly there's a lot going on, but it’s not married, and 40% means it lacks the necessary wallop.

Two hundred years ago, when the Scotts began moving whisky around the country in smaller barrels (aka quarter casks) they were improving more than methods of logistics. The smaller vessels made it easier for mules to carry and for the distillers to smuggle (what better way to inspire innovation than a ploy against the tax man!). In more recent times, with the rise of the micro distiller, smaller casks have played an important part by rapidly speeding-up the maturation process, increasing the whisky to oak contact ratio, in theory making it more palatable, at a faster rate.
For this release, after an initial period in x-bourbon barrels, the liquid was transferred into new, specially produced quarter casks for a final seven-to eight-month period. It's also bottled at a higher ABV to keep in line with older traditions. There's a serious complexity to the bouquet, with the first passing reeking of choc fudge and vanilla-laced peat. After a few minutes in the glass, the nose loses a little punch, but becomes more maritime; A subtle peppermint note combines with hints of bandaid and seaweed. In the mouth, this is a robust, oily, mouth-filling Laphroaig experience with waves of sweet smoke, salt, pepper, iodine and vanilla delivered in a creamy, warming mouthfeel with a mild prickle. The finish is refreshingly dry with cocoa, more peat and subtle baked citrus note lingering. Quarter Cask is not a gentle Laphroaig, but it’s much more compelling than the standard issue 10. If you can score a bottle close to one hundred dollars, don't hesitate. 48% Alc./Vol.

The whisky begins sweet and creamy, with notes of vanilla, honey, and ripe malt (reminiscent of a malting floor). Then the Laphroaig signature peat smoke, seaweed, tar, and medicinal notes emerge. Triple aged in ex-Bourbon barrels, quarter casks and Pedro Ximénez sherry butts, this deeply coloured Laphroaig opens with a PX top note almost overwhelming the expected distillery aromas. Brandy soaked raisins and dark chocolate amid flashes of sweet peat and pepper give way to smouldering cedar, cigar box and hints of elastoplast, accenting fruit cake in later inspections. Terrific balance in the sweet, smokey-malt mid palate; vanilla and Christmas cake add richness to the finish. Prolonged and lozenge-like with Laphroaig's trademark medicinal edge and pepperiness breaking through late, finally checked by the sherry. A big PX influence here but it's deftly handled - think of it as drunken Christmas pudding, Islay-style. 48% Alc./Vol. Normally travel retail exclusive.

The Larmandier-Bernier wines are marked by a feeling of textural intensity and vinous resonance that is quite distinctive. The wines are fermented in wood, mostly larger format foudre with some smaller barrels, with spontaneous fermentations and generally minimal handling. Dosage is on the low side. In recent years, the style here has shifted towards a greater focus on energy and tension than in the past, likely a reflection of a generational change being led by Pierre and Sophie Larmandier’s sons Arthur and Georges. The wines remain compelling.
The NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Longitude 1er Cru is a powerful, ample wine. The Longitude builds beautifully in the glass, creamy and textured, with tons of resonance. Pear, white pepper, dried flowers, mint and chalk are all delineated in a Champagne that blends power and tension. This is all class. Dosage is 3 grams per liter. Disgorged: February, 2023.

Scents of just ripe stone fruit, talc, faint honey and toast, a light caramel note too, all adding up to quite subtle and pretty. Creaminess in texture with very fine bead, vivacious and fresh-tasting with lovely salty-chalky feel very present through the wine and to the powdery, lightly puckering finish. Vinous in a way, gently savoury throughout, exceptionally long and runs with so much energy. Beautiful.

Founded in 1850, Domaine Laroche is one of the largest owners of Premier and Grand Cru vineyards in Chablis. Their Saint Martin Chablis is a blend of the very best plots of the Domaine’s 60 hectares of Chablis appellation vineyards. 85% of it is aged on fine lees in stainless steel tanks and 15% in 55hl foudres for minimum of 6 months.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a watery hue. Delightful pear, lime and green apple scents sail through the nostrils overlaid by wet slate, oyster shell and mineral notes. Delicious pear and lime fruits carry a slippery flow across what is a gorgeously rounded palate. Notions of green apple, wet stone, subtle infusions of fresh herbs and a saline like minerality the undercard. Excellent intensity with brisk acidity lending a fresh feel across the long shapely finish.

This luscious, intensely flavoured Gewurztraminer was sourced predominately from Lawson’s Home Block vineyard which was planted in 1981. The 2024 vintage was low yielding, and the dry season meant the grapes ripened perfectly, packed with flavour.
Luscious and exotic, this is a superb example of Gewurztraminer.
Brilliant water like core with distinct highlights of green skirting the edges. Incredibly potent nose with exotic scents of lychee, rosewater, musk and Turkish delight captivating the olfactory senses. Some pear and subtle ginger spice notes also chime in. Engulfing the mouth are luscious lychee, Turkish delight and rosewater flavours with notions of musk and ginger spice the undercard. Excellent concentration and power with a long off dry finish that’s balanced by fresh acidity.

A medium to full bodied entry level Bordeaux that shows ample richness and power.
The second label of Chateau de Malleret, this wine comes from 25 year old vines and is a blend of 65% Merlot, 31% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot.
Midnight black dark red colour with a dark red hue. Elevated aromas of blackcurrant and liquorice are trailed by some spicy vanillin cedar, dusty earth and subtle dried herb notes. Rich and concentrated, the medium to full bodied palate is flooded with juicy blackcurrant and liquorice fruits. Some black cherry, inky earth and spicy vanillin cedar elements sit underneath. Powerful and quite opulent in nature it has ripe, slightly chewy tannins and a long deeply fruited finish.

Collectors note: Unlike previous editions, this version was released without the original box. This is Springbank's contribution to saving the environment. Springbank's labels almost always arrive with minor wearing and markings, most often to the top of the front labels. This is unavoidable. If you are likely to be disappointed by minor label scuffing, we recommend you don't buy these whiskies.
Ever since 1973, a run of twice distilled peated malt has been produced at Springbank (Springbank itself is two and a half times distilled). Named after an earlier distillery in Campbeltown, Longrow's creation was prompted by a whisky shortage. According to Serge Valentin, it shares parallels with Tobermory’s Ledaig and Clynelish’s Brora. All were created because Islay whisky was in short supply after severe droughts in the late 1960s, and because of the temporary closure of Caol Ila.
Longrow has always been up there with some of the peatiest whiskies available, having phenol levels matching the likes of Ardbeg. Typically matured in both sherry and bourbon casks, for many whisky lovers, it's also the best non-Islay peated malt on the market - probably because it's not just about smoke. It also retains some of Campbeltown's coastal character for added interest.
Reviewed in 2020... This NAS edition replaced the Longrow C.V. bottling circa 2013 which contained 6, 10 and 14-year-old whiskies, so expect a similar composition here. Clear bright gold. Initially reticent with light citrus and grassy / farmyard notes developing to choc fudge and sooty peat. Hints of Fisherman's Friend, pipe tobacco and smoked fish in later passes. Full bodied and nicely balanced with a delicious integration of peat-soaked vanilla, peppery malt and coastal freshness. Ends dry, pleasantly spicy and vibrant with suggestions of Fisherman's Friend, kelp and cocoa in the fade. Earthy, coastal and complex. Great stuff. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... [+/- 2020 bottling] The plainest, purest, cheapest, simplest Longrow, and certainly not my least favourite, although I have to confess that I haven't tried it since 2015 (WF 89). This wee NAS is said to gather whiskies aged from 7 to 14, matured in a variety of casks (most refill, according to the refreshingly light colour). Colour: white wine. Nose: some pinewood burning in the fireplace, in a remote chalet in the Alps, while you're having a quick sauna (oils, ointments) with a glass of chardonnay in hand (would one do that?) and a plate of oysters on the side. There's also more spices than usual, at least that's my feeling. Curry, pepper, heavy nutmeg… Did they strengthen the oak treatment? Mouth: indeed it may be a little oakier and spicier than usual, but I'm totally fine with these notes of mustard, tobacco, mussels cooked in curry sauce, these tiny burnt touches reminiscent of burnt tyres, the ashes… Finish: very long, saltier yet, lemony, mustardy, peppery, with a sweeter aftertaste. A blend by Glenallachie's famous Billy Walker. It does come with a story and, apparently, with some peat. Colour: gold. Nose: smoke and soot and ashes and dough and tons of bacon. With water: lemon peel, grass, plasticine, hand cream, garden bonfire. Mouth (neat): Islay. That's the thing, when you add 5%, you feel it. When you add 10%, it's smoky. And when you add 20% and beyond, it's a peater. With water: an excellent, crisp, chiselled, uncomplicated citrusy peater. Finish: long and peaty. Zillions of companies are having such peaty blends these days, but I believe this one's particularly, err, peaty. And good. Walnuts and teas in the aftertaste, that should be the 'sherry'. Bright straw colour with a watery hue. Enthralling the olfactory senses are exotic scents of ripe pear, lychee, rosewater and musk with some baked apple and ginger spice notes also evident. Rich, luscious ripe pear, red apple, honeysuckle and musk flavours engulf the mouth. Flashes of lychee and ginger spice lie underneath. Established in 1996 by Paul and Jennifer Champion the Mermerus Pinot Noir is produced from a single vineyard in the Geelong sub region of Bellarine Peninsula. The fruit was hand picked from low yielding vines (1.8 tonnes per acre), open fermented, basket pressed and matured in seasoned French oak barriques for 10 months.
Seductive, silky and powerful this is a superb expression of Geelong Pinot Noir that delivers terrific value.
Dark red core with black toned edges and a red to dark red hue. Soaring out of the glass are perfumed scents of violet, dark cherry, strawberry and anise followed by some fresh herb, forest floor and spicy cedar notes. Uber delicious, the palate is decorated with dark cherry, strawberry and anise flavours that carry a gorgeous supple feel. Unravelling across the back half are notions of dried herbs, brambly cedar, forest floor and spice. Boasting outstanding intensity, depth and power, silky smooth tannins extend across what is a very long and highly seductive finish.

Mont-Redon is one of Chateauneuf-du-Pape’s largest estate’s with almost 100 hectares under vine and has one of the longest histories in the entire Rhône Valley. The estate has passed through many families over the centuries, but it’s modern history really started in 1923 with the then manager, Henri Plantin. Henri was a colleague and contemporary of Baron Pierre Le Roy de Boiseaumarié, the man credited with spearheading the creation of France’s entire AOC system in 1936. It was Henri’s drive and vision that established the estate as one of the ‘Grand Crus’ in Chateauneuf du Pape. Since 2017 Mont-Redon has been managed by Pierre Fabre, Henri’s great-great-grandson who has brought with him a renewed enthusiasm for producing the very finest wines.
Mont-Redon also produce a great value Cotes du Rhone. The 2023 vintage is a blend 50% Syrah and 41% Grenache with the remaining 9% comprised of Marselan, Mourvèdre & Carignan. Destemmed and fermented in stainless steel with about two weeks on skins and gentle pump-overs to promote a fine tannin structure, it then sees a further 8 months maturation in tank.
Awash with juicy black fruits this is a dense, concentrated and chewy Cotes du Rhone that delivers fabulous value.
Pitch black heart with a dark red black tinged hue. Pronounced black cherry and liquorice scents intermingle with some black raspberry, scorched earth, herbs du Provence and peppered dried meat notes. Rich, concentrated and chewy, the weighty palate is flush with juicy black raspberry, black cherry and liquorice fruits. Infusions of herbs du Provence, scorched earth and blackpepper also chime in. Dense sinewy tannins with the amply powered finish laden with succulent black fruit and peppered earth characters.

Prodigiously rich with a syrupy like texture, so thick that you could almost eat it with a spoon, the palate is completely saturated with a concentrate of raisin, honey, toffee and maple syrup flavours over traces of marmalade, well integrated spirit and spice. Almost incomprehensible concentration here. This has a deeply aged, toasty and dark nutty edge on the nose. Roasted honey, dark chocolate, coffee and roasted malt, too. The palate has implausibly concentrated flavors that follow the same threads shown on the nose, all swooningly sweet and rich. Maturation took place in a mixture of 85% French oak and 15% American oak with 35% being new oak.
Rich, velvety and seductive, this is a magnificent McLaren Vale Shiraz that delivers a powerhouse of flavour.

Ben Riggs sourced the fruit for this excellent Cabernet Sauvignon from one of Coonawarra’s top growers - Michael Wetherall’s, Wetherall Estate. From two premium vineyards on the estate that are a combination of terra rossa and sandy loam soils, the sites are located at the northern end of the region and are traditionally some of the earlier ripening blocks that deliver lower yields but excellent concentration. Picked on different days and from different blocks to allow for optimum ripening and multiple blending options, parcels of fruit for this Cabernet were separately fermented in 5 tonne open fermenters. On skin fermentation was completed before pressings were sent to barrel to complete fermentation in a 30% new French and 5% American oak combination.
A beautifully balanced Coonawarra Cabernet that’s deeply concentrated and amply fleshed yet wonderfully refined.
Dense midnight black core with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Sailing out of the glass with plenty of intensity are enticing blackcurrant, mulberry and choc mint aromas which intermingle with vanillin cedar, tobacco and spicy dried herb notes. Rich blackcurrant, liquorice and mulberry fruits caress the mid weighted palate with ample flesh and concentration. Lending further interest are notions of spicy vanillin cedar, earthy tobacco and infusions of bay leaf. Beautifully balanced and structured it has fine grained tannins and a finish that’s long and deep yet refined.

Formerly known as Powell & Son, Dave Powell, of Torbreck fame and son Callum have now decided to take separate paths on their winemaking journey. Dave rebranding his venture Neldner Road. Sourced from mature Barossa Valley vineyards, the majority located along the region’s North-Western ridge in Marananga and Seppeltsfield with a component also coming from Lyndoch Valley in the Southern Barossa. Fruit parcels are vinified separately in concrete vats before being basket pressed and assembled into large format 4,500 litre French oak foudres for 15 months maturation.
Rich and dense with a liqueur like concentration and voluptuous texture.
Magnificent colour featuring an impenetrable inky black heart along with a near equally deep black dark red hue. Heady aromas of dark to black plum, liquorice and ripe black cherry waft through the nostrils complimented by spicy vanillin oak and earthy mocha notes. Rich, dense and boasting a liqueur like concentration, voluptuously textured black plum, liquorice and black cherry fruits saturate every corner of the palate. Smoky vanillin oak, earthy fennel, mocha and blackpepper characters then move in. Power packed it has somewhat chewy yet velvet like tannins and a long decadent finish.

This exceptional Shiraz hails from a critically acclaimed McLaren Vale winery, recently taken over by a prominent South Australian wine identity. Sourced from vines planted in 1991, it spent 15 months maturing in French oak puncheons (26% new, with the balance in 1- to 3-year-old barrels), with only the finest barrels making the final cut. Offered under our Nicks Secret label, we have secured a parcel of this wine in its original—and arguably more famous—packaging at an unprecedented, never-before-seen price.
Plush, powerful and opulent, this is rich, sumptuous McLaren Vale Shiraz at its absolute best.
Impenetrable pitch black heart with a very deep dark red black hue. Soaring from the glass are heady ripe blackberry and liquorice scents which are complimented by some dark plum, gently toasted vanillin cedar, dark chocolate and spicy fennel notes. Rich and lavish in its feel across the palate, opulent blackberry, liquorice, dark chocolate and dark plum flavours engulf the mouth. Vanillin oak, subtle earthy fennel, mocha and spice characters form the underbelly. Boasting fantastic power, textural volume and velvety tannins it concludes very long, plush and seductive.

It's wonderfully styled and complex on the nose, showing dark berry, cedary oak, thyme and cake spice aromas. The palate is equally satisfying with outstanding weight and richness, well complemented by plush texture and beautifully infused tannins.
