- Suntory Royal 15 Year Old Blended Japanese Whisky (700ml)JAPAN$399. 00Bottle$4788.00 DozenABV: 43%A relatively old and rare Japanese blend, Suntory 15 was first released in the late 1990s following the series of Royal blends introduced in the 1960s to mark the 60th anniversary of the company. Usually hard-to-find except on the auction circuits, this is reported to include whiskies from Hibiki, Yamazaki and Hakushu. Stunning presentation. Other reviews… Nose: Licorice covered oak with lemon and banana. Some macadamia nuttyness and wood stain. Sweet and creamy with soft grains of mainly bran and wheat. After about 10 minutes, apricot makes an appearance. Palate: Very creamy but with that hint of lemon bitterness. Macadamia nut, licorice, banana, nutmeg and golden syrup. Smooth! Finish: Smooth, soft grain, creamy nuts, licorice, lemon and some salty zing on the tongue. General comment: This whisky wears it's 'blendedness' on this it's sleeve with the grains definitely dominating. If you are looking for a malty blend then this one is probably not for you. If, however, you like a smooth Bourbon-esque style then step in line. 43% Alc./Vol. – nonjatta.com

One of the whiskies in the composition was aged in x red wine casks (or sherry casks, depending on your source) for over 20 years; another was aged in port wine casks for a similar period. The younger part of the assemblage was matured in ex bourbon casks. Needless to say, our allocation is miniscule. No tasting notes available.

Suntory Kakubin Blended Japanese Whisky (700ml)JAPAN$74. 99Bottle$899.88 DozenABV: 40%One of Japan's biggest selling whiskies returns! Perfect in a highball with soda.
First created in 1937 by Shinjiro Torii, Suntory's founder and first Master Blender, this was initially named "Suntory Whisky," but became lovingly known as Kakubin, or "square bottle", due to its unique presentation. That name and the square-cut, tortoise-shell design have remained for more than eighty years. An easy-drinking and highly versatile Japanese bar standard, the Kakubin highball is the go-to for many Japanese out for a night of dining and fun.
Tasting note: Bright deep gold. Subtle grain and sour dough bread opening sniffs develop into delightful aromas of vanilla and orchard fruit (nashi pear?) Is there a whisper of smoke beneath this? A light, almost creamy entry follows through with a mildly fruity, dried grass and gently spicy mid palate. Deliciously juicy at the finish. Concludes fresh and dry with orchard fruit and hay-like flavours lingering. Light and easy, you could almost mistake this for young Glen Grant. Meet the new super-value in Japanese whisky. 40% Alc./Vol.

Taking excellence in whisky packaging to new heights is this special edition Hibiki released by Suntory in 2015 for the Japanese duty free market. The bottle features 24 facets representing the 24 seasons of the Japanese lunar calendar set against a painting of Mount Fuji. The foreground depicts Japanese Plum, Pine and Bamboo, symbolizing felicitations, wishing happiness and good fortunes.
Reportedly limited to 2000 bottles, the understated beauty of the bottle almost resists opening. No doubt, most will be destined to become bar trophies - a shame given that the 21 year old is considered by many experts to be the peak expression in the range. Created in 1989, demand for the Hibiki blends increased after the brand's appearance in the movie "Lost in Translation". Jim Murray enthused about the 21 year old in his 2015 Bible, commenting, "...it's hard to raise the bar much higher than this. Stunning." 96 points.

Arguably the most 'distinctively Japanese' whisky ever made, and one of the high points in our Japanese whisky collection. (Reports have it prices reached up to $10,000AU a bottle in Japan when this was launched in 2017). Master blender, Shinji Fukuyo creates his annual masterpiece from whiskies 18 years up, with a small portion exceeding 50 years of age. All components were matured in casks made from Japan's native oak, the 'Mizunara'.Suntory began to experiment with the indigenous oak after the Second World War when supplies of foreign oak were difficult to source. It made a far from ideal vessel, Mizunara's loose grains tended to cause leakage, and also created challenges in terms of timber selection and cooperage. Blenders at the time had few kind words to say about the wood. Decades later, the tree is better understood, and the hints of incense, sandlewood and aloeswood it imparts to whisky are prized. The oak releases these qualities after decades rather than years, making the whiskies they mature all the more precious.
“I wanted to reveal the whisky’s soul that is the ‘Art of Mizunara’, a heightened sense and awakened palate engaged through aromas and flavours never known before. Encountering it should be a moment of epiphany,” said Fukuyo.
Presented in a beautiful oak case made from recycled Suntory casks, these bottlings rarely re-surface. An obvious investment opportunity and one of the most significant Japanese whiskies of the year.
Other reviews... When whisky lovers talk about the grandeur of Japanese whisky, the enlightenment they desire can be found within this bottle. A refined luxury evocative of toasted marshmallow, sweet incense, butter-soft caramels, oak spices, and ground cinnamon. All the hallmarks of mizunara are here. Concentrated sweet citrus, so intensely fruity on the palate; the mouthfeel is rapturously silky with touches of mango, dried apricot, and gentle but resilient spices. 48% Alc./Vol.

As the price may suggest, there ain’t a lot of this around, but to see Hakushu at its most robust, try and find a bar with a bottle. Again, the sherry component has been upped, as has the smoked element. There is, however, always that graceful Hakushu purity running through, this time expressed as rhubarb and strawberry. The palate shows great oily depth, hints of walnut, and yes, a sprig of mint tying it to the 10 year old.

Shinjiro Torii, the founder of the Suntory company, was a pharmaceutical wholesaler importing liquor from the West before he was inspired to create a uniquely Japanese whisky. In 1923 he built the country's first malt whisky distillery (in fact, the first of its kind outside of Scotland) on a site in the Vale of Yamazaki outside Kyoto where pure water, a diverse climate and high humidity made it an ideal environment for whisky production and maturation. To complete the formula, Torii hired Masataka Taketsuru (of Nikka fame) who had studied the art of distilling in Scotland. In 1929, the company introduced Suntory Shirofuda (Japanese for white label), Japan's first genuine domestically produced whisky. Kakubin (square bottle), a premium Japanese whisky, was born in 1937. The whiskies have become more and more sophisticated over the decades, in particular the older bottlings under the Yamazaki label. This is their 'entry level' expression. It is typically peat-free and quite Speyside like.

A legendary Japanese blend comprising of more than 20 components, including single malt whiskies from the Yamazaki and Hakushu distilleries and grain whisky from the Chita distillery (an exclusive producer of grain spirit), ranging from 12 to 30 years in age.The twelve year old incorporates an otherwise standard oak regime, utilizing a combination of American oak ex-bourbon barrels and European ex-sherry butts, with the additional twist of including American oak previously used to mature Umeshu, a traditional Japanese plum liqueur. Interestingly, these types of casks were originally used for efficiency's sake, however is now an integral part of its trademark flavour profile. After marrying all the components, the final blend ungergoes an exotic filtration through bamboo charcoal.
Tasting note: Deep brass / gold colour. Gently prickly in the initial inhalations; Second pass finds sweet American oak and vanilla notes nicely balanced with fresher, fruitier notes - think kumquot jam. Third inspection yields deeper scents of dried apricot, fig and fruit'n'nut chocolate. Lively spirit gives backbone to the medium dry, grainy profile; lovely late sugars at the finish with the honeyed cereals and drying oak making for a lipsmacking finale. Rival for any Scotch blend of similar age. This gets more appealing with every sip. 43% Alc./Vol.
Other Reviews…Pale golden amber color. Exotic aromas of anise, coconut butter cookie, praline, tropical citrus, and delicate peat are very attractive and follow through on a silky entry to a dry-yet-fruity medium-to-full body with superb depth and complex layers of flavor. Finishes with a very long dried fruit, nut, mineral and spice crescendo. A fantastic blended whisky.

A significant number of European oak x-Sherry casks (mainly oloroso) make up the maturation regime for this whisky; second come x-Bourbon American oak casks, then a small percentage (approx 5%) from the domestic Japanese oak species, 'Mizunara'. Japanese oak tends to impart spicier, sweeter and sometimes more tannic notes than the previous two. Experimentation continues with sandalwood and cedar as well as casks which have previously contained Japanese Plum wine.
Other reviews... Deep, mature in nature, and very complex. Notes of polished leather, maple syrup, and dark pit fruit, with suggestions of tobacco smoke, wood shavings, and unsweetened chocolate. Suntory Hibiki Japanese Harmony Blended Japanese Whisky (700ml)JAPANReduced from $250.00$189. 99Bottle$2279.88 DozenABV: 43%"Exemplary blending skills and classically Hibiki."
- whiskyadvocate.comLaunched in March 2015 as the fifth addition to Suntory's celebrated "Hibiki"collection, "Harmony" follows on from Yamazaki and Hakushu Distiller's Reserve which are also younger, NAS (no age statement) whiskies, aimed at maintaining sales due to the scarcity of older whisky stocks. (Several years ago, Nikka decided to discontinue a large number of their whiskies due to increased demand and a decrease in supply).
Details of the composition of Japanese Harmony haven’t been revealed, but, like the Distiller’s Reserve, it's likely a blend of young and old material. Single malts entering in the blend come from Yamazaki and Hakushu distilleries, while grain whisky comes from Chita. The whisky resounds with calm complexity and “Wa,” oneness - at least that's how the producers like to describe it. 43% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Poised and complex, with typically lifted fruitiness: strawberry ice cream, pineapple, peach, balanced by delicate oak, bamboo shoot-like delicacy, then lemon. The palate is more rounded than that very forward nose, with toffee notes adding some weight. A touch of smoke comes along in the mid-palate, before fruits and caramelized coffee biscuits. Water allows the flavors to flood the palate. Exemplary blending skills and classically Hibiki.

Production wise, Suntory's Hakushu distillery (pronounced "Hack-shoo") is the largest malt whisky distillery not only in Japan, but in the world. Built in 1973 coinciding with Suntory's 50th anniversary, it's set amidst spectacular pine forests close to the Japanese Alps. Suntory also purchased the distillery surrounds to protect water quality and conserve the local environment. In fact, water from the district is considered the best in Japan, something Suntory have capitalised on by bottling and selling it throughout the country. All the barley required for single malt whisky production here is imported from Scotland or elsewhere (including countries like France, England and Australia). The resulting whiskies make a significant contribution to Suntory's large number of malts and blends. Due to the distillery's height above sea level (700m), low pressure distillation occurs naturally, said to contribute to the light, fruity style of the whiskies
Other reviews... Unlike their colleagues in Scotland, Japanese distillers do not exchange stock for their blending requirements. This means that each distillery is set up to produce a wide range of styles. Hakushu uses four different types of malt (unpeated to heavy) run through four pairs of differently-shaped stills. Each single malt is a different blend of these bases. While still herbal, this example shows more sherried notes along with sour orange zest, tropical fruit, and some smoke. Complex. 43% Alc./Vol. 90 points - www.maltadvocate.com
…The delivery though, makes this malt worth finding because for 20 seconds or so we have absolutely everything in complete harmony, and the degree of barley sweetness is just about perfect. Then all is lost to the duller oak tones again.

Made from 100% malted barley, this 12 year old expression is produced in copper pot stills and aged in casks of three different kinds of oaks: American, Spanish and Japanese.Tasting note: Brassy gold. A mild prickle to the malt; develops with aromas of stewed pear / apple tart, fine chocolate and vanilla. After five minutes aeration this becomes more sponge cake-like. Medium weight, stewed orchard fruit profile suggests a thread of peat. Builds in the mouth with a depth and texture reminiscent of Linkwood or Glenlossie at their best. 43% Alc./Vol.
First tasted 2010 (Tasted from a miniature. The Yamazaki has been noted for batch variation. The batch No. here is unknown.) Bright pale gold appearance with a water like hue. Somewhat restrained. At first honeyed barley and pine wood like scents. With time in the glass subtle dried fruit notes emerge that are almost berry like. Unusual. A big, warming, spicy flavour-wave that subsides to reveal sweet barley, confectionary and vanilla notes accompanied by a trace of smokiness. Creamy back palate. Relatively abrupt aftertaste of dry, cedary oak with a subtle toffee fade. Pleasant. 86 points
Other reviews...Deep amber/18-carat gold color; impeccable purity. This seductive opening aroma is gently spicy, malty and almost brown rice-like; the secondary aromatic profile is fully integrated, dusty dry, slightly woody/sappy and delicately spicy; understated, deep and enticing aroma of the first rank. Entry is firmly structured, moderately oily/viscous, nutty and candy bar-like; midpalate stage shows off a richness that’s world-class, toffee-like and woody/resiny. Ends richly, understated, nutty/nougaty and drier than the other two Suntory whiskies tasted for this issue. Excellent quality. Highly Recommended www.spiritjournal.com

An intriguing Japanese release from the Yamazaki distillery stringing from the recent movement toward non-age statement whiskies from producers, this one with a noticeable difference. Suntory's Yamazaki Distiller's Reserve is a mix of malts varying in age and cask type, originating from ex-red wine casks matured for approximately three years, older Sherry matured malts approximately twenty years in age and Mizunara casks, otherwise known as Japanese oak, for a twelve year period.
Tasting note... Amber gold appearance. Understated and pure with aromas of vanilla, cocoa dusted malt and honeyed cereals; hints of fruit cake here too. More stewed pear with air contact. Medium dry, fresh delivery offers a spicy, orchard fruit, vanilla and juicy malt burst. Succulent and fruity to finish. Almost a floral delicacy to the aftertaste. Love the mouthfeel here.

Teerenpeli Karhi Single Malt Finnish Whisky (500ml)FINLAND$175. 00Bottle$2100.00 DozenABV: 43%Run by a husband and wife team, the Teerenpeli Distillery commenced production in 2002 and has gone on to become Finland's biggest distillery, turning out over 100,000 litres of new spirit per year in their Scottish made stills. Before then, the Pyysing's had experience in brewing and post maturing products in smaller casks from Scotland. Their whiskies are made entirely from Finnish malted barley. Offered as a duty free exclusive, "Karhi" was matured for 5-7 years in bourbon casks followed by a twelve month finishing in x-Madeira casks. Each batch represents a limited edition run of around 1500 bottles. Other reviews… Peeling back the wrapper on a British chocolate bar studded with whole almonds, only to find an unexpected puff of spices; green cardamom pod and toasted fenugreek. Intriguing, never pungent. Given the spectrum of flavors in Madeira, this finish pushes the richness and complexity of the wine; raisin, coffee, and dried fruits make it sweet, concentrated, and mouth drawing. It relaxes to a toffee plateau with riffs on ripe date and coffee. The short coffee finish sees the chocolate return.

That Boutique-y Whisky Company World Whisky Blend (700ml)UNITED KINGDOMReduced from $99.99$49. 99Bottle$599.88 DozenABV: 41.6%Wholesaler clearance on one parcel only. "...a big old mouthful of flavour...proof that interesting bargains still exist in the world of whisky." - whiskyreviews.net
The comic-strip label alone tells you this must be from the independent bottler, That Boutique-y Whisky Company. Best known for their eclectic selection of single malts, on this occasion they've opted for a 'World Blend' composed of whiskies from Scotland, Canada, Ireland, Sweden, the United States, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Taiwan, India, Italy, Germany, South Africa, New Zealand and Tasmania... and possibly more! Offering a truly global tasting experience, each component brings its own distinct character, from the smoky peat of Islay to the rich sherry influence of Speyside. The result is a harmonious fusion of sweet honey, roasted nuts, chocolate and gently smokey aromas and flavours. The label says it's made for mixing. And given that the majority of whisky consumed globally is mixed, the slogan makes good marketing sense: In Scotland, a splash of water is common. In China they drink it with green tea. In Japan the whisky & soda highball is king. In warm countries like Venezuela and Brazil, it’s topped up with coconut water, or if you're in the USA or Australia, it's usually cola or ginger ale. Whatever your taste, this is a whisky inspired by the diversity of drinking preferences around the world. Boutique-y fans note the 700ml bottle as opposed to the standard 500ml Boutique-y format. 41.6% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... It’s certainly a big old mouthful of flavour. There’s caramel and toffee mingling with apple and pear, raisin and biscuit. Vanilla. Honey. Salt and pepper. Touch of dark chocolate and oak too... It’s a rather unique and tasty dram at a really affordable price. There’s a decent amount of flavour going on, which gives the impression it could stand up to the mixers suggested on the back label. Crucially however, it works just as well when sipped neat. That’s how I have thus far chosen to drink it but I can definitely see some experimentation in the not too distant future. I’m thoroughly enjoying it, particularly that gentle warmth. More proof that interesting bargains still exist in the world of whisky. - whiskyreviews.net
Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Notes of freshly baked bread, lots of honey and a smidge of orange marmalade, supported by slightly tart stewed apple with a sprinkle of brown sugar. Palate: Warming and spicy, with more of that floral honey and baked crumble topping, alongside crunchy, underripe apple and pear. Finish: A prickle of spice, toffee and vanilla pod linger alongside a slightly mineral note.
- That Boutique-y Whisky Company Armorik 5 Year Old Sauternes Cask Single Malt French Whisky (500ml) - Batch 2Brittany, FRANCE$170. 00Bottle$2040.00 DozenABV: 46.4%
Batch two in Boutiquey's wine cask series includes this Armorik from Brittany's Distillerie Warenghem, matured in an ex-Sauternes wine cask, bottled at 46.4% with 286 bottles in the run. Having tasted several releases from this French whisky upstart, we can confirm the quality can be very high, even when young.
Located in Lannion on the north coast of Brittany, the Warenghem distillery has been an independent family-owned company for over 100 years. In 1998 they began producing single malt, becoming the first distillery in France to do so. As usual there's a quirky label, best explained by the Boutique-y team: "The Veneti (Gaulish: "the kin, the friendly ones") were a Gaelic tribe who lived in Armorica, now known as Brittany. We’ve set the scene deep in the forest of Gaul with a still for the cauldron and fields of barley in the background. The white swan is a nod to the late Dr. Jim Swan who gave the distillery guidance, reviewing their equipment, and techniques, proposing a series of small changes."
Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Plenty of peach and apricot with aromatic wafts of wildflowers and soft oak spice. Palate: Rich, gloopy honey, toasted nuts, and more stone fruits welcome the way for warming baking spices. Finish: Gingerbread, more sweet, floral honey, and a well rounded peppering of toasted oak and spice on the finish.
- That Boutique-y Whisky Company Teerenpeli 5 Year Old Single Malt Finnish Whisky (500ml) - Batch 1FINLAND$165. 00Bottle$1980.00 DozenABV: 47.6%
Another release in the 'Wine cask series' from Boutique-y is this 5-year-old from family-owned Finnish distillery, Teerenpeli. Matured in a Spanish ex-Oloroso sherry cask, with 448 bottles in the run it promises a rich, fruit-cakey profile. 47.6% Alc./Vol.
Established 2002 in Lahti, today Teerenpeli turns out over 100,000 litres of new spirit per year in their Scottish made stills. It's become the biggest distillery in Finland, and specialises in producing single malts. Casks are matured in 40-foot ex-reefer sea containers, which sit outside the distillery without heating or cooling. Outside temperatures vary wildly throughout the year, from -35C to +30C, which causes significant cask expansion and contraction. As for the colourful label: Teerenpeli translates to ‘flirtation’ and also means ‘black grouse’, so Boutique-y made sure there’s a visual reference to both. Teerenpeli's sales and Marketing Manager, Jari Mämmi, can be seen driving the Zamboni along the rows of shipping container businesses. The original distillery started off within a restaurant, hence the stills in the back. The Pelicans are a local ice hockey team, oh, and Jari is currently sporting a Mohawk - as are the black grouse!
Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Rich and fruity with a distinct nuttiness. Fruit cake with candied fruits. Hints of burnt sugar, cinnamon and liquorice.
Palate: Sweet and fruity; Chinese peach apricot, grape juice, with some vanilla sponge cake too.
- That Boutique-y Whisky Company 21 Year Old Batch 1 Japanese Blended Whisky (500ml)JAPAN$399. 00Bottle$4788.00 DozenABV: 47.9%
This is Boutique-y's first whisky from Japan, and the first indie Japanese bottling to hit our shelves! 940 bottles are available with a small number allocated to Australia. Going by various reviews, expect a strong sherry influence.
Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Fresh fig jam, diced almond, a touch of tobacco and subtle vegetal wafts. Palate: Coffee and walnut cake, rum-soaked raisin, dried red chillies. Slightly buttery at points. Finish: Subtle wine-like qualities - rich and fruity. 47.9% Alc./Vol.
- 2021 The Akkeshi Shosho Blended Japanese Whisky (700ml)JAPAN$599. 00Bottle$7188.00 DozenABV: 48%
World’s Best Blended Whisky and Best Japanese Blended at the 2022 World Whisky Awards.
No.4 in the 24 Sekki Series, Shosho means ‘the heat stops’ and represents the 14th of 24 solar terms in the traditional East Asian calendars. Akkeshi’s single malt accounts for more than half of this blend and also includes imported grain Whisky (new-make) aged at the Akkeshi distillery. The average age is four years, mostly drawn from ex-Bourbon casks.
Notes from the producers... Opens with campfire smoke, and plenty of saltiness. Honey, butter, and orange infiltrate the nose, while the palate is bright and fruity; a cacophony of citrus intertwines with a seam of smoke. There’s a pleasant, light bitterness on the finish.
- 2021 The Akkeshi Ritto Single Malt Japanese Whisky (700ml)JAPAN$799. 00Bottle$9588.00 DozenABV: 55%
No.5 in the 24 Sekki Series, 'Ritto' is the season when winter begins and the first snows make their presence felt in the northern countries. This bottling is exclusively Akkeshi’s own malt, distilled from locally grown Hokkaido barley in 2018, then matured in Mizunara oak and ex-Pinot Noir casks.
Notes from the bottlers... This has the classic threads of Akkeshi’s iodine and smoke-wreathed malt, intertwined with fresh vanilla, caramel and a hint of liquorice. There’s a perfect balance of sweetness, saltiness and smoke on the palate. Perhaps reflecting the season, it’s a deeper expression, finishing with a dry grip on the sweet/ savoury length. 55% Alc./Vol.
- 2022 The Akkeshi Daikan Blended Japanese Whisky (700ml)JAPAN$599. 00Bottle$7188.00 DozenABV: 48%
No.6 in the 24 Sekki Series, 'Daikan' refers to the peak of winter. Akkeshi’s distinctive single malt accounts for more than half of the blend here, compiled with imported grain whisky (new-make) that was aged at the Akkeshi distillery. Aptly, for a wintery dram, this is matured in ex-red wine casks for the heart of the blend, which balances the sweetness gained from ex-Bourbon and Mizunara casks. Still with Akkeshi’s signature salty freshness, the peat here is more reserved.
Notes from the producers... Round, full and warming, there’s plenty of creaminess and chocolate notes to balance the sweet-and-sour citrus. It finishes with a streak of white pepper. 48% Alc./Vol.

The Akkeshi Usui Blended Japanese Whisky (700ml)JAPANReduced from $499.00$350. 00Bottle$4200.00 DozenABV: 48%New from the Akkeshi Distillery on Hokkaido (easily confused with, but nothing to do with 'Akashi'). 'Usui', meaning 'rainwater', is the second season in the distillery's series of twenty four 'Sekki' - Japan's distinctive cycle of seasons. A blend of malt and grain whiskies, more than half is malt from Akkeshi, the rest being imported as aged grain. According to a label, "The sweet and fragrant peat of Akkeshi malt combined with the lightness of the grain makes it gorgeous and never gets tired of drinking."
Beginning in 2016 and owned by Kenten Co, an import-export company, Akkeshi's President, Keichi Toita is a long-time whisky aficionado. Located further east than any other distillery in the country in the district of Hokkaido, in Japan’s northern wilderness, the house style is inspired by Islay. Two Forsyths stills, a 5000 litre wash still and 3600 litre spirit still are steam heated and feature declining lyne arms into shell-and-tube condensers. Two warehouses are on site, while another two are closer to the sea. The idea is to work out the differences in the maturation environments. The first single malt proper - Sarorunkamuy - was released in 2020. The whiskies have been very well received by the likes of Jim Murray and whiskyadvocate.com.

The Kurayoshi 8 Year Old Pure Malt Japanese Whisky (700ml)JAPAN$169. 99Bottle$2039.88 DozenABV: 43%Tasting note: Matured in a Bourbon cask. Amber gold. Opens a little shy, but develops with a spicy fruity interplay (dried fruits, plums, apricots?) perhaps a touch of grapefruit, then more nutty and sweet-spicy. All very subtle. Silky and mellow beyond its age statement. A deft burst of spice seals the finish. Possibly less fruity than the 3 year old but with a plusher texture. Quite lovely malt. 43% Alc./Vol.
