Yet another independent bottler hits Australian shores. Founded by Andrew Dewar Rattray in 1868, A D Rattray began trading as an importer of French wines, Italian spirits and olive oil. More importantly, however, the company also established itself as a specialist in the field of blending and storage of malt and grain whiskies.

After several changes in ownership, the company returned to the family and is presently owned by Mr Tim Morrison, previously of Morrison Bowmore Distillers and fourth generation descendant of Andrew Dewar Rattray. The company’s resurgence came about in 2002 with the bottling of a ‘new’ Stronachie 12yo. In April 2004, using his extensive knowledge and expertise in the whisky industry, Mr Morrison then bottled a selection of his own handpicked stock of whiskies for market release and the A D Rattray Cask Collection was born.

The "Cask Collection" series, whether from a barrel, a hogshead or a butt, represent single cask whiskies made available in extremely limited quantities, often no more than a couple of hundred bottles for each cask.

In this example, the whisky is a very youthful Craigellachie, but don't let the age put you off. Young whisky, particularly at natural strength can offer a dazzling expression of distillery character. Several 6-7 year old Glenrothes we've tasted have been nothing short of extraordinary. Drawn from a Sherry butt, just 704 bottles are on offer. At this direct import pricing the pedigree and value for money are equally hard to resist. According to A.D. Rattray, expect " Creamy toffee, chocolate caramel and walnuts with an exceptionally long finish for a young cask."58% Alc./Vol.

"The obliteration is total. Only the name remains." So ends the story of Stronachie, a distillery which rose out of the wilderness in the 1890s. Set in a desolate glen on the Perth-Kinross border it stood between bleak hills on an isolated road that toiled its way through the Ochill mountains. Stronachie Distillery produced a traditional Highland-style whisky until 1928 and during its four decades of production A.D. Rattray Ltd represented the brand in Scotland. Rattray is proud to revive the Stronachie name and reproduce this spirit of another time. To replicate the whisky, a bottle of original Stronachie 1904 was purchased at auction - one of only four bottles left in existence. A small sample was drawn, then samples of many Highland malt whiskies were compared to the original Stronachie. Finally, the remote and high altitude Benrinnes was chosen.

There are many, many very positive user reviews on the web for this pale gold, Bourbon cask matured dram. The nose is pristinely clean with malt and vanilla opening sniffs followed by oatmeal biscuit, cocoa and dried fruits. Light and easy on entry, building concentration and balance through the mid palate with lovely vanilla malt and honeyed notes framed by spicy oak. The finish is dry, mildly fruity and soft. So eminently drinkable, you can understand why Stronachie has developed such a loyal following. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... A quite outstanding 10 y.o. Speyside. I don't remember how I 'found ' Stronachie but boy am I glad I did. For it is simply the best 10 y.o. I have ever tasted, and is in my top five whiskies of all time. I am a tour guide for the American market and visit a lot of distilleries all over Scotland, so although not 'an expert' I have learnt a lot in the last six years. I have repeat ordered this whisky more times than any other and all friends and others who have tasted it agree with my praise of it. I am just going to order another couple of bottles (one as a thank you present).
Finally thank you to A D Rattray for your unstinting quest for perfection (someone has to do it after all!) and thank you to Benrinnes Distillery for producing (and of course all the other distilleries in Scotland) such a wonderful nectar.
My observation on Stronachie: Light , sweet, malty, amazingly smooth with a finish that lingers gently and helps to set you up for the next one. - A.D. Rattray customer review

Aberdeen Distillers is an ancillary label from Blackadder under which all the malts are released at a calming 46%. This young Dailuaine offers moderate nashi-pear fruitiness to the nose and an intense, spicy, grassy character overlaying the malty mid-palate, reminiscent of fresh-pressed olive oil. The finish is gently fruity (red apples), medium sweet, with the spices accentuating rather than tapering off. 333 bottles. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Aberfeldy 18 Year Old Cote Rotie Cask Finish Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $250. 00
    Bottle
    $3000.00 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

Aging whisky in a secondary cask is sometimes risky, but tinkering with a whisky that's 18 years old is even riskier. Malt Master, Stephanie Macleod has done just that with this Aberfeldy finished in red wine casks from the Northern Rhone valley in France - specifically, Cote Rotie - probably for around 4-6 months, though the exact period isn't stated. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Red wine finishing can be tricky with whisky, and this bottling is no exception to the rule. The impact of red wine is immediately evident on the nose, tannic and meaty, with cereal and spice notes serving to slightly temper the winey notes that otherwise wholly dominate. The palate feels similar, quite sharp with notes of pepper jerky, some currant notes giving the back end some much needed fruit. Toasty oak is big on the finish, but only for a moment, before the whisky retreats to notes of beef tallow and bacon fat. The 2020 bottling of this limited release saw a much more different experience, considerably fruitier and sweeter throughout. Unfortunately, this release is just much too savory for easy enjoyment, that tannic backbone having its way with the delicate underlying spirit. - drinkhacker.com

This is the travel retail version of the 21YO, part matured in Madeira casks, which at the time of writing is selling for considerably more at Duty Free stores. Aberfeldy's Malt Master, Stephanie MacLeod finished it in ex-madeira casks for up to 12 months prior to bottling. The result is a richly textured, complex yet balanced whisky with notes of ripe fig, walnut and dark chocolate in symphony with Aberfeldy’s signature honeyed richness. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The nose is utterly irresistible with rich, honeyed aromas of granola, malted barley, vanilla, ground almond, and cream on hot porridge. The slightly waxy mouthfeel gives it a luxurious sheen, with flavors of citrus, heather honey fudge, vanilla, and peppery spice, followed by dried fruits, notably apricot and mango, oak, and hints of bourbon biscuit. A lively, mouth-coating finish of cinnamon and pepper round it out handsomely. 91 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Jonny McCormick 2021

...Sprays of orange peel oils are vibrant while golden raisin and apple pastry notes linger in the back of the aromatic surge. Waves of indulgent honey cookies and candied ginger unfold across the palate. Orange reappears, bitter and dried, on the gracefully winding finish. 94 points / Excellent, Highly Recommended - Ultimate Spirits Challenge 2021

...I used to the older version of Aberfeldy 21 quite a lot, despite its lightness. Not sure whether they changed the recipe or not along the new packaging… Oh and I’m not sure I’d have bottled a new 21 at 40% vol. The design is retro and the strength is retro too ;-), but the price is fair given the age (+/-85€). Colour: deep gold. Nose: but it’s even more breakfasty than the 16 yo! Although we’re rather finding marmalade and mint flavoured tea here, as well as curranty buns, Danishes, muffins, and all things from a New York coffee shop. No, not Starbucks. Very lovely nose, I have to say. Mouth: what a pity that they bottled it at 40% vol.! Because it’s totally excellent, bursting with raisins, jams, marmalades, and slightly mentholy herbal teas, some lemon grass, rose jelly, even tinned litchis, a perfect raisiny oakiness… Finish: short to medium, honeyed and grassy at the same time, with something Highland-Parky. Comments: shouldn’t we start petitioning? Why bottle any 20+ years old malt whisky at 40% vol.? Especially when it’s as excellent as this! 86 points - whiskyfun.com

Dewars, (owners of Aberfeldy) are stepping into the 'limited edition' market with a twenty year old release of 3600 bottles. Labelled under the 'Exceptional Cask Series', it was set down to age in April 1998, then transferred into a first fill sherry cask in early 2014 before bottling in March 2019. It's a curious title, given that the whisky appears to be a vatting of around seven casks, reduced down to 43% Alc./Vol. Which begs another question, if it was an exceptional cask - why the finishing? Expect a fruity Speysider with extra sherry richness.

For over a century, Aberfeldy has maintained a hidden profile as the backbone of the famous Dewar’s blends (the best-selling Scotch in America as well as the distillery’s corporate owner). Aberfeldy's own line of re-vamped single malts started to roll out in 2014, with a five-strong range. Sales have since increased significantly. Situated between the Highlands and the Lowlands, the distillery is sometimes referred to as a 'Mid-Lowlander' and is considered one of the sweetest of all Scottish single malts, the result of extended fermentations coupled with slow distillation. Its approachable style has a honeycomb - breakfast cereal character and can be deliciously fruity. Sherried variants like the very successful 16 year old reveal a gutsier side of the distillate.

When it comes to the entry-level 12 year old, initial impressions are of fruit salad with scents of unripe canteloupe most salient along side dustings of dried coconut. Five minutes sees the fruity edge only slightly diminished. It's light and silky on entry but builds into a soft, light to medium bodied, elegant malt, the fruity / vanilla combination repeating at mid palate, followed by hints of oatmeal with moderate length. In short, an amiable 'Highlander' that's clearly intended for casual drinking. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... bright and lively, the sweetly honeyed cereal and buttery biscuits of a predominantly bourbon-barreled single malt (plus some refill and a touch of sherry) are immediate on both nose and palate. It’s approachable and comes across as just a little green but otherwise fully uncomplicated, with the focus squarely on well-sweetened grain notes as the palate builds. The finish offers just a touch of spice and at least nods toward the oak barrel, but it never attempts to complicate what comes across as an affordable sipper to get the night started. - drinkhacker.com

Golden and bright in the glass, the aroma suggests caramel apples. The palate shows plenty of oak and spice, opening with sandalwood and vanilla, plus a hint of baked apple. Adding water brings a mellow, malty effect, bringing in honey, ginger and a final flurry of cinnamon. 91 points - wineenthusiast.com

Fresh and floral, with lively tropical fruit, honey, and vanilla. Gentle on the palate, with a slight syrupy texture to its malty foundation. Youthful, orange marmalade finish with a hint of spice. A pleasant, easy-going whisky. 82 points

... Nose: Beautifully intense malt with a cidery-apple fruitiness. Gentle oak and honey round off superbly. Palate: Fresh, almost crisp mouthfeel with outstanding sweet maltiness and an almost Irish pot-still firm fruitiness. Mouthwatering. Finish: Softly spiced with a long, rich malt follow-through. Comment: Really outstanding example of massively complex, classy but undiscovered malt. 85 points - Jim Murray, whiskymag.com

"...clearly more well-rounded than the 12 year old, a bit meaty but also showcasing some chocolate notes...Quite lovely." - drinkhacker.com

Bacardi’s venture into Scotch Whisky is managed by John Dewar & Sons. The company has unveiled a new expression from “The Golden Dram” – the name given to Aberfeldy’s water source, the Pitilie Burn, which is renowned for being rich in mineral deposits including alluvial gold.

Released in the latter half of 2015 as part of the "Last Great Malts" series, this bottling is intended for eleven markets globally - Australia not being one of them. We've enjoyed this distillery's 'fruit salad' profile in the past, so when the opportunity arose, we couldn't resist adding it to our collection. Matured in Bourbon barrels but finished in Oloroso Sherry casks, the latter impart a delicious sweetness to the whisky, plus extra notes of dried fruits and spice. Scrawling through the positive customer reviews online, this one sums them up: "I can hardly believe that a whisky of this quality is obtainable at this price. I've long been a great fan of Aberfeldy 12 year old but this drop is in a league of its own." 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Once vatted together for bottling, this expression is pumped into first fill oloroso sherry casks for a further 6 months; it’s the only expression in the Aberfeldy range to have this additional finishing time. A familiar cereal element kicks off the nose, though here it rides along with a slight mushroom note. There’s a pinch of pepper and a bit of greenery, but it all coalesces well. On the palate, the whisky is clearly more well-rounded than the 12 year old, a bit meaty but also showcasing some chocolate notes as well as vanilla. That cereal underbelly persists, along with toasty oak and some almond notes, adding nuance. The finish is clean and slightly sweetened by golden syrup, with a finish that recalls Golden Grahams cereal. Quite lovely. - drinkhacker.com

...This limited-edition single malt scotch is scented with white flowers, fresh pear and honey. The palate is relatively drying and herbaceous, starting with cedar, oak and cigar wrapper, winding into earthy hints of sarsaparilla, chamomile tea and lemon peel. 89 points - wineenthusiast

Other reviews... The nose opens with a slightly savory note, rich and spicy, with sherry, Jaffa oranges, and sweet oak. The palate is smooth and rounded, with malt, nutty spice, honey, and milky coffee. The finish is lengthy, with Seville oranges, plain chocolate, dark sherry notes, and licorice. A new version of Aberfeldy's 16 year old has been released as part of their duty free exclusive series. This time the famously fruity Speysider has been finished for a year in a combination of Malmsey and Bual Madeira wine casks. Expect soft notes of honey freshened with citrus and delicate tones of baked apples, cinnamon and creamy vanilla. Big one litre format.

Other reviews... The nose is complex and rich with touches of citrus fruits, honey, and muted spices. The spices come alive on the palate with intense notes of cinnamon and allspice complemented nicely by apple cobbler, vanilla, and honey. The finish is long and well-balanced as the cinnamon spiciness fades away gently while lingering apple and honey notes tickle the back of the throat. Excellent!

Each batch of Abunadh varies in proof and flavour as proportions of older or younger material make the cut, but the brief remains the same: Make a 100% ex-oloroso sherry aged malt using the inventory at hand (anywhere from 5 to 25 years old). Keep it natural, which means zero chill filtration, keep it balanced and keep it affordable. No information about the number of bottles from each batch of A’bunadh is offered, but they're large outturns for a global community, which makes for a significant blending challenge. Notes from the producers... Aromas of Spiced orange, dark bitter chocolate on the palate harmonising with rich, deep notes of Oloroso Sherry. On the palate, orange, black cherries, dried fruit and ginger spiked with dark bitter chocolate and enriched with Sherry and Oak. Full bodied and creamy. Long and luscious. The sweetness of the red fruit lingers and is eventually replaced by a bitter sweet chocolate, spice and oak. A little water opens up the whisky and reveals more of the fruitier side of the profile, but at the cost of that rich, chewy mouth feel.

An antique Aberlour from the 1980s. This is still the biggest selling single malt in France (and the French drink more whisky than the Scots!)

Other reviews... Colour: pure gold. Nose: ah, the old bottle effect? Lots of tropical fruits, mango, passion fruit, guava… Goes on with some eucalyptus, camphor, beeswax, wood polish… Very nice. Hints of sherry, walnuts, hot caramel. Very nice indeed! Mouth: amazing attack for such a mundane malt. Very peppery and strong, even a little sharp. Lots of herbal tea, burnt bread, black toffee… Creme caramel, Irish coffee. Not extremely complex but I’m sure this one must have been a bang for your buck malt when it was on the shops’ shelves. Rather long, creamy and heathery finish.

You have to get the bottle out of the tube in order to identify the batches on these older Aberlours. This one's number two in the series, matured for 18 years and finished in both Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez Sherry casks. We presume that the intent of the batches is to introduce subtle variations to tasters, probably by varying the ratios of PX vs Oloroso casks. Consider the price when compared with 'conspicuous consumption' equivalents like Macallan and this is looking like a very attractive proposition. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... This one's very new and looks like the finishing craze stroke again. I tried the earlier 18 only in January this year but liked it a lot (WF 86) even if it was wounded by some original sin as they had done it at 50cl. This new one, at 70cl, has been finished twice, although I couldn't tell you whether that was simultaneously or successively. Classic set-up anyway, PX + oloroso. Colour: amber with orange hues. Orange hues suggest spirit caramel but I doubt they would have done that here. Nose: gentle, with more sherry than in the white oak, naturally. Although the vast majority of sherry casks are white oak too, it has to be said. Some cognac, many raisins, bags of dried goji berries, figs and dates, a little orange juice, zwetschke tart, clootie dumpling, treacle toffee pudding… Very clean, absolutely lovely, but as we all know, with these profiles it'll happen – or not - on the palate. Mouth: so easy. Aberlour's fruitiness, more zwetschke, preserved peaches in abundance, blood oranges, apricots, raisins, chocolate liqueur, fudge, a touch of lemon to keep it fresh and lively… Finish: medium, citrusy, fresher and brighter. Allegro. Millionaire shortbread in the aftertaste. Comments: this one's extremely dangerous. Never pour more than 2cl in your glass at any time, and never refill before your (or your guests') glass is totally empty, or you won't control anything. 87 points - whiskyfun.com

No information about the number of bottles from each batch of A’bunadh is offered, but they're large outturns for a global community, which makes for a significant blending challenge. That hasn't stopped collectors and fans of sherried malts from stocking up on those that are deemed better than others.

Handles water so well, it's like getting two bottles in one.

Aberlour’s cask strength A’bunadh has long been a darling of single malt aficionados, released in batches and now onto #76 (overseas may have even more recent bottlings). Each varies in proof and flavour as proportions of older or younger material make the cut, but the brief remains the same: Make a 100% ex-oloroso sherry aged malt using the inventory at hand (anywhere from 5 to 25 years old). Keep it natural, which means zero chill filtration, keep it balanced and keep it affordable. No information about the number of bottles from each batch of A’bunadh is offered, but they're large outturns for a global community, which makes for a significant blending challenge. That hasn't stopped collectors and fans of sherried malts from stocking up on those that are deemed better than others. It's easy to be overly harsh or jump the gun with these bottlings. Unless you are willing to be patient and let them breathe, they can be muted, out of balance and slightly prickly at first - a bit like a wine that's uncorked before its prime. That's certainly the case here. Get past the intensity of the spices and batch 76 is closer in style to Batch 74; There are notes of figs, plums and raisins but it's not exactly a sherry bomb, instead American oak contributes an equal level of vanilla richness, amplified and softened by minimal water - which is where this gets a little dangerous. Don't be too quick to refill your glass (or your guests') or things could quickly get out of control. On the flip side, you can dilute away and still retain a surprising level of intensity - which is a bonus. Whichever way you like it, A'bunadh is worth checking out as you encounter it, at least so long as value remains Pernod-Ricard's priority. 61.3% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Notes from the producers... Auburn gold in the glass. Aromas of mixed spices, praline and spiced orange harmonising with rich, deep notes of Oloroso Sherry. The palate blends oranges, black cherries, dried fruit and ginger spiked with dark bitter chocolate and enriched with Sherry and Oak. Full bodied and creamy. Robust and intense finish with bitter-sweet notes of exotic spices, dark chocolate and oak.

    $1739.88 Dozen
    ABV: 60.9%

For anyone who thinks all the best batches from this label were done and dusted years ago, tasting #74 & #75 may change your perspective. Weighing in at just 0.9% higher alcohol than Batch 074, expectations would be for the two releases to be fairly similar - and at first taste, they are. But as with all sherry matured malts, especially when they're cask strength, time and air contact play a role. Batch 075 is in classic sherried form. There is solid Oloroso input, as evidenced by some delicious prune and dried apricot notes infusing the malty profile, especially after the addition of water which adds lifted baking spice and more fruit cake character. And as with any A'bunadh, the finish is bold, tactile, heartwarming, creamy, then long on the aftertaste with hints of leather and orange fondants. A'bunadh is never primarily aiming for a 'balanced' style - it's more about sheer power and sherry - but Batch 075 comes pretty close to satisfying all the criteria for great cask strength whisky - which is rare. The impressive depth and integration also suggests older liquid has made its way into this batch. Stock up! 60.9% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

A one-off shipment of the first release of this super sherry bomb.

For anyone seeking a big sherry hit, Aberlour's Double Sherry Cask will deliver. Deeper in colour than the standard issue 18YO, it's first matured in American and European oak then racked off for a final finishing in Pedro Ximenéz and Oloroso sherry casks. It makes the final result wonderfully balanced with fruity nuances. Significant age adds body and develops the distinctive fruitiness to a richly raisined climax. Batch 001, so if it sounds like your thing, jump on it before the collectors do.

Sheer approachability has helped Aberlour become the most popular whisky in France, where more single malt is consumed than any other country. At around 40%, it's a polite, relaxed and sometimes, slightly wanting tasting experience. As an alternative for those who prefer sherry with a kick, owners Pernod-Ricard introduced the natural strength A'bunadh around 2000. Eighteen years later, Casg Annamh was launched as a French Exclusive in a similar vein (the name translates from the Gaelic as “rare cask”). Also influenced by Oloroso, it's matured in three types of casks: European oak Sherry casks and two different types of American oak . Like A'bunadh, Casg Annamh is batch specific, with six iterations to date, some better than others. Whichever you come across, they're all handsomely packaged with a wax seal stopper, while the extra ABV and zero chill filtration makes a world of difference. 48% Alc./Vol.

A'bunadh Batch number 74 has landed, having undergone the same maturation process as previous editions, entirely in ex-oloroso sherry butts. Bottled at cask strength, these are invariably engaging and super tasty malts that show best after ample air contact with a few drops of water. Batch 74 opens with moderate aromas of dried fruits alongside vanilla malt, ripe plums as well as more savoury notes of wood shavings and peppercorns. The spirit heat is well controlled, and it feels relatively relaxed compared to many earlier releases. Uncut, flavours of ginger, dried coconut and juicy fruit cake are at the fore. The finish is intense and creamy while pepper, cocoa, dates and new leather carry the aftertaste. Arguably there's more American oak influence than Oloroso in this batch, so if you're partial to big, spicy Bourbons as well as all-natural malts, it's likely that you'll find plenty to enjoy. Minimal water is all that's needed to significantly fluff up the mouthfeel. 60% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

"I rather hate it that I like it a lot. Nah, it's an excellent (if a little syrupy) little NAS, really." - whiskyfun.com

Described as "The yin to Aberlour A’bunadh’s yang" and originally a US exclusive, 'Alba' is matured entirely in 100% first-fill Bourbon barrels instead of sherry. You might think that's something to pass on given the series has built a reputation for well-curated oloroso casks. However, according to whiskyadvocate.com, "The result is a bracingly pure whisky with deceptive simplicity; far from boring."  'Alba' has a double reference here, not only meaning “Scotland”, but nodding to American oak (aka ‘Quercus alba’). Just like its cousin, 'Alba' is released in small batches made from a range of casks of varying ages, with lots of Tennessee whiskey barrels in the mix, plus Smooth Ambler, TX, Rabbit Hole and Jefferson’s. Bottled at a whopping 62.7%, expect exotic fruits, vanilla and creamy aromas and flavours that are "as close as you'll get to tasting original cask strength Aberlour at the distillery". Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... [Batch #1 tasted] I may need to invent the term “bourbon bomb” to adequately encompass what this has going on. It’s as full flavored and as forcefully personable as the regular A’bunadh, but it goes in a completely different direction. Where that has the expected dried fruits, this is bursting with a ripe fruit cocktail full of the types of delicacies you’d find on an Asian breakfast buffet. There’s an element of the nose’s fruity/creamy dichotomy throughout this, though in less overwhelming form in the mouth. It tastes a bit like dessert, which might be a good indication of which point in your evening will best suit this one. - malt-review.com

...Sweet and clean, with aromas of honeysuckle, confectioners’ sugar, lemon, fresh jasmine, nougat, and coconut cream. The palate is remarkably consistent, with lemon curd, toasted coconut sprinkled over oatmeal, vanilla cookie, pear, and juicy citrus. A lengthy finish of grapefruit, lemon, and apple continues the theme. The clean, spirit-driven profile might give the impression of simplicity, but the high ABV ensures there is much to unpack. [Batch #1 tasted] 93 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Susannah Skiver Barton 2019

...Nothing to do with the famous Swedish pop band Abba (S., come on), the name Alba refers to quercus alba, a.k.a. American oak, so this is probably ex-bourbon wood, but let's remember that the very vast majority of sherry casks, at least the genuine ones that they're using in soleras, are made out of American oak and have been for ages. Colour: straw. Nose: I remember that when we first visited the Distillery with the Malt Maniacs, around the year 2002, bourbon casks were extremely rare and any opportunity to try any wouldn't have been missed. And wasn't missed. This is hyper-clean, oily, all on white and yellow fruits. Preserved peaches and custard are ruling the whole shebang. With water: no changes. Pleasantly elementary and even binary. Mouth (neat): a creamy, almost syrupy mirabelle and white pepper combination. The oak feels a little too much for me at this point (oversteeped tea and coconut) but water may help… With water: very simple, very excellent. Mirabelles, touch of mint, touch of quince, vanilla, tarte tatin. Finish: I'm afraid we'll need to mention limoncello once more. Comments: possibly a little too obvious, and I rather hate it that I like it a lot. Nah, it's an excellent (if a little syrupy) little NAS, really. 86 points - whiskyfun.com

    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $139. 99
    Bottle
    $1679.88 Dozen
    ABV: 61.2%

Another explosive addition to the series, Batch 073 of Aberlour's ever popular 'A'bunadh' continues a tradition of being matured in Spanish Oloroso sherry casks. Compared to some recent releases, the colour is marginally lighter and the aroma and palate deliver more heat and astringency. Its fiery, Armagnac-like personality reveals flavours of walnut slice, dried fruits and dark chocolate alongside richer vanillas, suggesting a good measure of American oak, however multiple tastings are required to acclimatise to the high ABV. Water softens the blow, fluffing up the texture, allowing you to experiment with a wide ratio of dilution to find your preferred sweet spot. 61.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Launched in 2007, A’bunadh (pronounced a-boon-arh), literally meaning 'the origin' in gaelic is a toast to the forefathers of today's whisky makers, and particularly James Fleming who founded the Aberlour distillery in 1879. It's produced in the tradition of 19th century malts, an era when villagers would come to the distillery to collect their dram straight from the cask, often in apothecary bottles obtained from the village chemist - the inspiration for the contemporary Aberlour bottle shape. As a NAS release, A'bunadh demonstrates what's possible when restrictions on age statements are removed and skilled blenders are engaged. Bought to market in numbered batches, various tasters have claimed significant differences between the releases; others note the consistency. More recent batches do seem to be slightly darker in colour, suggesting the inventory Aberlour has been using is getting older, or more active sherry casks are in the mix.

Aged roughly ten years, here is an Aberlour that bucks the trend, giving you a chance to try the spirit 'naked', without sherry influence. Yet, according to one blogger, "Attentive drinkers will find there is still plenty of Aberlour character here." Reportedly the emphasis is on coconut and vanilla from the cask and fruit from the distillate. Bottled at 40% so expect a lighter style. Some batch variation has been noted by Serge Valentin below.

Other reviews... [2009/2019 release tasted] Given the meagre strength here, I suppose this will rather be or aperitif-quality. Colour: light gold. Nose: rather on porridge, grist, apple compote, gooseberries and just oak vanillin. This is a light, pleasant, undemanding nose that would display a lot of fresh barley as well, before fading away… Mouth: this is where it's getting a little more difficult. The oak strikes first while the body's a little too weak to keep up. Violet sweets, sawdust, some nutmeg... It tends to become bitter and just rather unpleasant. A little bizarre, but we've often noticed that whiskies need higher voltages to be able to sustain this kind of oaken profile. Finish: short, bitter, dry, oaky. Comments: I remember last time I visited the distillery – but that was a long time ago – you could fill your own bottle from either a sherry or a bourbon cask. The bourbon used to be splendid and, at that time, very unusual as Aberlour was all about sherry. But this time, American oak doesn't do much good, in my opinion, but maybe is the newer batch, the 2010, better. 70 points - whiskyfun.com

Aberlour 10 year old is a huge seller in France, with owners Pernod-Ricard promoting it heavily. Selling off its popularity is a logical move, hence there's been a number of distillery releases exclusive to the French market. This 43% abv bottling is one (note that the more widely distributed equivalent was always a 40% bottling). The 16 year old echoes the flavours of Aberlour's 12 year old, but with both Sherry and Bourbon casks in the mix, combined with a higher ABV, it promises more depth.

Sherry fanatics who were spoilt with Macallans or Glendronachs through the 1980s and '90s will relish this. Among the more challenging and complex single malt styles to navigate, it's also a whisky that should come with an advisory statement: "Rewards Patience". Aberlour is the darling of single malt Scotch Whiskies in France (and the most consumed), so it makes sense that this exclusive single cask was selected by French retailer, 'Comptoir Irlandais'. At the time of writing, there were approximately fifteen bottles of the original 570 still available from the Brittany based shop, so cask #4405 is getting close to liquid history.

Tasting note: The stunning colour is brilliant copper / bronze. A reserved, drier and spicier side of Aberlour is presented on the nose; Old drawers, leather arm chairs and bitter cocoa with an almost peircing, citrus lift. It needs fifteen minutes in the glass to expand to richer, XO Armagnac-like notes of dried figs, fruit cake, chocolate covered orange, cinnamon, rancio and vanilla. At cask strength, the entry is effortless. Mid palate starts out with coffee beans and dark chocolate as spices gang up and nutty Oloroso builds. But this is very much about what comes after the first sip. In particular, the rebound and persistence of the aftertaste leave the impression that it is actually much older than it is. It ends in a cascade of semisweet oak and sherry that borders on being honeyed. Pour yourself a glass and come back in thirty minutes, one hour, even two in order to savour this all natural beauty in full blossom. 58.8% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 570 bottles.

Notes from Comptoir Irlandais... Nose: Intense notes of lemon and pink grapefruit followed by fruit bread and soft caramel. Palate: Spicy with candied orange zest and hints of roasted coffee and sweet spices. Finish: Long and smooth with lingering spice notes.

Other reviews... A new NAS at low strength, hum-hum… Colour: deep gold. Nose: easy and malty, typically malt for the upper blend drinkers, so some kind of access-category malt whisky, in the league of Cardhu and Knockando. Guinness, Mars bars, a touch of pinewood, some gentle earth, and of course, many roasted nuts and toasted cakes. Shall we call it ‘rather Chivassy’? Mouth: good! It’s often on the palate that things go a little off the track with these cheaper malts, and indeed I’m finding it a little thin and a little too caramelised/caramelly, but other than that, there’s some fine chocolate and quite a lot of toasted bread and brioche, plus notes of maple syrup. Roasted peanuts. Finish: medium, rather coating, malty and chocolaty. Nice raisins and nuts. Comments: a no brainer, perfectly well made. No one will find this wee baby unpleasant.

Next to Glenfarclas 105 (and a handful of others), this sassy, oily and spirity A'bunadh is one of the last stand outs in the super-value cask strength category. Our recommendation is a strong buy.

Batch 071 is an Aberlour classic. With no sulphur or extreme heat, it avoids the pitfalls of some earlier editions, combining oloroso sherry butts ranging from five to twenty five years of age in a Speyside tour de force. Auburn-mahogany coloured, the aromas of oak shavings, walnut slice and dried orange peel are enriched by raisin cake and dark chocolate. Fans of natural strength malts will adore the bracing attack that's combustible, feisty yet surprisingly approachable. The mid palate creams-up the mouthfeel injecting a juicy, moist fruit cake character that is simply salivating. The aftertaste unfolds with leather, vanilla malt, allspice and nutty oloroso and concludes as sizeable as it began. 100% sherry matured and bottled non chill filtered, this remarkable heavyweight blending effort hits all the right notes and continues to build with air contact. Buy as many as you can afford before the price goes up. 61.5% Alc./Vol.

...Sure the name sounds a little stupid (aren’t they being almost as creative as Bunnahabhain in that respect?), but that does not obligatorily mean the whisky’s poor. Plus, the price is rather fair (approx.) so they’re not trying to suggest that this is the Koh-I-Noor of whisky. Colour: gold. Nose: typical Aberlour, really. Nuts, Mars bars, rose petals, milk chocolate, butterscotch, roasted raisins, walnut cake, Ovaltine and morello cherries. Mouth: chocolate and malt cake, more Ovaltine, raisin cake, Christmas cake, more walnuts and Mars bars, toffee, cinnamon rolls… Finish: rather long, and clearly on panettone. A wee drop of mulled wine too, and even more Ovaltine mixed with orange liqueur in the aftertaste. Comments: Aberlour are very good at making this very style of malt whisky. Another fine example - despite the lack of age statement (and the funny name). Nothing against Gaelic, of course, but it’s all becoming a little tiring, is it not. 85 points - Serge Valentin, whiskyfun.com

The distillery which was founded on its current site by James Fleming in 1879 is not open to the public. (However, visitors are welcomed by appointment during the Speyside Whisky Festival). The village ‘Aberlour’ (Gaelic for Mouth of the Chattering Burn) became nationally famous in the 19th century for its Orphanage. The town has preserved much of its historical character. Original houses, built of stones taken from the bed of the Spey, mingle with more recent buildings and landscaped public gardens. Aberlour's spectacular setting on the banks of the Spey makes it easy to see what made it such an attractive place to found a community and a distillery. The pack horse bridge over the Lour and the remains of the famous Aberlour Orphanage can still be seen in the village, which makes an ideal base for exploring the surrounding countryside. Aberlour is also a highly sought after salmon angling spot and the home of Walkers’ shortbread. Built alongside the Lour burn, the Aberlour distillery uses pure spring water that rises through peat and granite from Ben Rinnes. The St Drostan Well stone was erected to mark the location of the spring, which was used by St Drostan to baptise the local population in the 7th century, and is also featured on Aberlour’s label.Folklore, legend and the smooth delight of Aberlour malt whisky have been traditional fireside companions through many a long winter night in these parts. Today Aberlour 10 year old is available in over 40 countries. Other bottlings are available in selected markets and duty free.

Unusual finish with spice and mint apparent. Soft but warming and then finally dry. One of the highlights of the Aberlour range.

Other reviews... Rich amber-gold hue. Sweet stone fruit and lush smoky malt aromas jump from the glass. Very smooth and full-bodied with enveloping fruity caramel and vanilla flavors. Finishes with a long, elegant, rancio-tinged finish that displays a fine malt character. Powerful yet very balanced and harmonious.

More about the distillery…The distillery which was founded on its current site by James Fleming in 1879 is not open to the public.

The St Drostan Well stone was erected to mark the location of the spring, which was used by St Drostan to baptise the local population in the 7th century, and is also featured on Aberlour’s label. Folklore, legend and the smooth delight of Aberlour malt whisky have been traditional fireside companions through many a long winter night in these parts. Today Aberlour 10 year old is available in over 40 countries. Other bottlings are available in selected markets and duty free.

We have sourced a small quantity of these relatively unknown expressions just to showcase what this distillery capable of.

On a par with some of the better A'bunadh releases? Not quite, but not far off either. At this price, don't think twice.

Sheer approachability has helped Aberlour become the most consumed whisky in France, where more single malt is consumed than any other country. Like A'bunadh, Casg Annamh is batch specific, with five iterations to date, some better than others. Satisfyingly complete, Batch #5 gets it right, being neither too dry and reserved as Aberlour can be (almost like an overaged Armagnac) nor does it quite enter into the territory of over-the-top sherried styles. Given 5-10 minutes, the aromas juxtapose bitter orange peel, dark chocolate and cinnamon warmth with sweeter notes of prunes, fruit cake and vanilla. The palate has enough depth and attack to satisfy those who enjoy cask strength malts while being balanced enough to drink uncut. A moderate sweetness akin to dates and figs gives way to drier Oloroso; Brazil nuts, hints of fruit cake, cocoa and vibrant festive spices add interest. It's one of those appetising sherried styles that draws you back again and again. Of course it's less intense than A'bunadh, but it's neither better or worse. If anything the oloroso is more obvious and it's not as clunky (we tasted it side by side A'bunadh Batch #71). Handsomely packaged with a wax seal stopper, the extra ABV and zero chill filtration makes a world of difference. It's also worth noting that Batch #5 is sold out in the UK, casting doubt on future shipments. While the price is right, grab a few before we move on to Batch 6 or 7 - which may, or may not be as good. 48% Alc./Vol.

Aberlour's house style is typically rich, generous and extremely accessible. These flavours are usually achieved with very low degrees of peating being employed (if any at all). Maturation takes place in top quality ex-sherry casks, in this case, exclusively Oloroso Sherry casks.

Tasting note: Polished brass / copper colour. Not exactly an extroverted nose, but not shy either, with definite sherry input infusing light citrus peel, fruit cake, walnut slice and hints of cocoa to the aroma. Middle weighted, this glides easily over the tongue with medium dry flavours of ginger bread and light fruit cake supported by a spicy, slightly citrusy / acidic backbone. Finishes relaxed, fresh and nutty with the sweetness restrained. The trace of sulphur is mild enough to ignore. A nicely balanced sherried edition that treads on the drier side. 40% Alc./Vol.

The bottles are labelled with the name of the contract holder, in this case, Jock Deans. We have one bottle only from a total outturn of 360. Quite collectable. 40% Alc./Vol.

A whisky many consider to be the ultimate expression from this distillery. Quintessentially Speyside, the self-proclaimed flagship was (until relatively recently) reserved exclusively for the French market (the French drink more single malt than the Scots, hence, the best stocks were selected.) Described as "the richest and most indulgent Aberlour", it is invariably a house favourite for both beginners and seasoned malt lovers. No surprise that it was runner up for Best Single Malt Scotch (18 Years) at the 2015 International Whisky Competition.

One of the most impressive age-statement buys in Sherried malt to come our way in years.

Tasting note: Deep copper to amber-gold. Very classy on the nose, and finely harmonsied; orange zest and raisins juxtaposed with sweeter depths - in particular, vanilla cream and some lovely fruit'n'nut chocolate sherried threads. Likewise the honeyed-malt delivery; light and graceful on entry but building with dried fruits, tea biscuits, cocoa and hints of orange peel. Oily, warming and long through the aftertaste. Once again, very classy, even approaching Macallan 18 in terms of texture and style (the 100% Sherry bottling). This is slightly firmer and drier, but nearly as polished, and with a finish that just feels 'expensive'. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... thick milkshake with various fruits and vanilla.... wonderful fruit chocolate fudge development; long and guided by a gentle oiliness. Another high performance distillery age-stated bottling. 91 points - Jim Murrays Whisky Bible 2018

There was an Aberlour 18 on the market for a spell several years ago, aged in sherry casks, that I really enjoyed. Now we have this new 18 year old expression. There are big shoes to fill, and this whisky fills them quite nicely. Once again, the sherry is prominent throughout, with its lush fruit, velvety texture, and sweet demeanor. But it’s not cloying or sappy — the sherry blends in nicely with the rest of the flavors. Ripe orange, apricot preserve, peach cobbler, chocolate-covered caramel, and toffee, with a sprinkling of cinnamon and cocoa. Rich, silky smooth, satisfying finish. Very impressive. The Aberlour 18 year old’s reputation remains intact! 91 points-

...This expression is the latest release from the Speyside distillery of Aberlour...it joins 10, 12 and 16-year-old bottlings in the UK domestic market, and like many versions of Aberlour, has a strong influence of Sherry wood. The nose offers sweet Sherry, honey and orange creams, becoming richer and more profound with exposure to air. Spices and figs emerge. Full-bodied and medium-sweet in the mouth, with spicy Sherry, apricots and peaches. Water teases out notes of furniture polish, liquorice and smoke. The finish is long, with silky cream, more spices and figs, and a final suggestion of gentle oak. A lovely, confident, satisfying, after-dinner Aberlour. Sherried Speyside at its best. 4/5 stars. - www.whisky-pages.com

... Always a favourite in the house, it’s a malt that just pleases everyone, from die-hard freaks to inattentive diners. Colour: deep gold. Nose: very typical, classic fudgy Speyside with much elegance and plenty of herbal teas that keep it complex. Earl grey tea plus fudge and buttered caramel, plus quite some malt, Ovaltine-style, as well as orange zests dipped into milk chocolate. The whole works in sync, which is very pleasing in this context. Mouth: only the lightish strength makes it a notch less satisfying than it could be, but these oranges, chocolate, orange blossom plus all the toffee do work in sync again. Perhaps a tiny touch of rubber in the background, but nothing embarrassing, that just makes it a tad drier, and less syrupy. Finish: medium, even more on toffee and (rather grassy) tea. Comments: very classy, as I remembered it, and a little cognacqy.

A further addition to this very successful stable of malts, the sixteen year old has received high praise worldwide, continuing along the path of popularity carved out by its younger siblings. A very low peat spec is combined with maturation in top quality ex-sherry casks as well as traditional ex-bourbon casks. This echoes the flavours of the 12 year old but adds deeper dried fruit notes - it's also a sherried Speysider offering more delicacy and finesse than most. Just as the label suggests, what you get is an attractive mix of x Bourbon and Sherry on the nose, though probably more of the latter; Vanilla, honey, plum and dried apricot, with 3-4 minutes air contact deepening the bouquet, conjuring scents of dried flowers, raisins and pepper. Light & breezy with a moderate burst of dried fruits, orange zest and vanilla building towards a crisp finish, then spicier through the aftertaste, the sense of lightness and elegance makes for an alternative Speyside style, and a perfect 'house' malt. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... More subtle and complex than the new 12 year old, and not as sweet. Creamy in texture and floral on the nose, with dried vanilla, gentle spice, nectarine, kiwi, plum, and lemon gum drops. Soft, elegant finish with a hint of mint. Great balance of a variety of flavors and lots of finesse. A well-crafted whisky! 90 points- whiskyadvocate.com

...Golden amber color. Aromas and flavors of dates and apple cinnamon pastry, ripe pear slices on a walnut and arugula salad tossed in a honey and balsamic vinaigrette, toasted almond, and chai tea with a round, crisp, dry medium body and a warming, compelling, medium-long finish evoking notes of raisins, toasted almonds and pecan, and fresh cut grass. A classic, lovely Whisky with excellent Sherry cask influence; serve with poached salmon topped with honeyed walnuts and some green apple for acidity. 94 points - Exceptional - tastings.com

At the time of writing, we're up to Batch 84 in the series. This historical bottling goes way back (circa 2009). The dark colour looks like some older sherry casks made it to the mixing vat. One to collect or set aside for a special occasion. 60.2% Alc./Vol.

That hasn't stopped collectors and fans of sherried malts from stocking up on those that are deemed better than others.

An antique Aberlour from the 1980s. This is still the biggest selling single malt in France (and the French drink more whisky than the Scots!)
Note: Some lifting to the edges of the front label.

Whisky and Scotland inseparably intertwined.

Made from the most elemental of ingredients, water and 100% malted barley, Single Malt Whisky has become inextricably woven into the fabric of Scotland's history, culture and customs. Indeed, there are few drinks which are so closely related to the land of their birth than Scotch (even though most distilleries nowadays are not actually owned by the Scots.)

Malt Whiskies, which differ considerably in flavour according to the distillery and region from which they come, tend to have a more pronounced bouquet and flavour than grain-heavy blended whiskies. By definition, malt whiskies are also single distillery, made by the one distiller in the one location. They offer something blends generally don't: a sense of time and place that translates into a one-of-a-kind flavour sensation influenced by the water source, the shape and size of the stills, the type of cask, age and the degree of peating. If you're new to whisky, it's worth reading our Scotch Whisky primer here.

How Single Malt Scotch suddenly became so popular...

90% of the single malt Scotch produced continues to be used to make blended whisky, and the proportion was once much higher than that. Glenfiddich's famous 'Special Reserve Pure Malt' was the whisky that introduced and popularised the bottling of Single Malts to the world. Glen Grant, Macallan and others followed suit and in the 1980s malts started to gain a reputation as a 'more authentic' product than blends. At the same time, the popularity of vodka and other spirits began threatening the market share. In response, blenders dropped their prices. Unfortunately, consumer's perceptions of blended whisky were also lowered. A sense of snobbery developed against the 'cheap' and 'inferior' blends. Unjustified as this was (and remains), it was a sequence of events that helped prepare the way for the current Single Malt boom. So successful has the rise of Single malt been that the industry has found itself in a position of deficit. Older malts are becoming increasingly rare and pricey, partly accounting for the present trend of N.A.S. ('No Age Statement') bottlings and limited edition collector releases.
