  Bank Note is the only blend A.D.Rattray bother with. There are two reasons why: Firstly, they believe it’s exceptional, so another would be superfluous. Secondly, it’s part of Scotland’s whisky heritage, stemming from a time when George, Edward then Victoria reigned. Great passenger liners set sail from Glasgow, cargo ships were loaded with whisky barrels on the Clyde where James Sword & Co was one of the largest companies to bottle and blend. Bank Note was in their portfolio of spirits. The company was admired for its dedication to quality – and so Rattray continue the brand with some pride and attention to detail. A mix of 40% malt whiskies from the Speyside and Highland regions is expertly blended with 60% grain whisky from the Lowlands. Maturation for a minimum of five years ensures a mellow taste at 43% ABV, with good mouthfeel and decent depth of flavour.

  Speaking at the publication of Jim Murray’s 2011 edition of the Whisky Bible, the man of the hour commented, “Blends are seen by many as the poor relations to single malts. Ballantine’s 17 proves, quite spectacularly, what many of us have known for a great many years: it isn’t. A blender has the chance to create something unique and quite beautiful by putting together many whisky styles. With Ballantine’s 17, the blender has done his job in glorious, quite majestic fashion.”

  Note: we have the 40% ABV bottling. Jim Murray's review refers to the 43% bottling, however we would expect the whiskies to be very similar.

  Tasting note: Impressive, bright deep, gold colour. The nose offers powerful sweet grainy scents, beautifully integrated with cocoa, charry vanillan oak and a very soft, gentlly wafting sweet peat adding depth. There’s a subtle grapiness too. Concentrated and mouth filling by blended standards and quite spicy, the palate is pristinely clean offering rich sweet malt, followed by cocoa and some smokey, honeyed, biscuit flavours. Outstanding length. Remains spicy, becoming dry - the aftertaste is a remarkable quality of this whisky - pulsing for a good 10-20 seconds and beyond.   This historic label was originally bottled many decades ago when Cadenhead's rose to the challenge of creating a great blend from their massive warehouse stocks. They recently resurrected the '7-Stars' blend using whisky from distilleries all over Scotland. The blend is then finished in Oloroso sherry casks – giving it a bolder more complex flavour.

  Notes from Cadenheads... Nose: Strawberries and cream, Apple crumble, butter biscuits. Flavour: Tangerine skin, Muscovado sugar, ginger snap biscuits. Finish: Raisins, cold cocoa drink, slightly hoppy and zesty. 46% Alc./Vol.

  A recent addition to the Royal Salute family, with a similar release date to 'The Lost Blend'. Their 'Signature Blend' has been crafted with precious and scarce whiskies. Expect a spice driven, nutty, and rich expression backed up by heavy citrus character. A non-peated bottling, making it a guaranteed all-rounder.

  The nose is a little attenuated but shows off tarte au citron, cigar smoke, blood orange, and some gentle spices. The rich, fruity palate has a flawless, immaculate quality with tangy orange, spice, caramel, ground almond, vanilla, and orange sherbet, but what it gains in smoothness it loses in producing a substantial firework moment to really stimulate the palate. A polished blend in search of some perfect imperfections.

From that day to this, the world-famous Strathisla Single Malt Scotch whisky became the foundation of the Chivas blend. The international reputation of Chivas Regal has been built upon this distillery and the skill of successive generations of Master Blenders. Legally, a blended Scotch whisky must contain both single malt Scotch whiskies and single grain Scotch whiskies. It's made using a higher proportion of Oloroso Sherry casks for extra richness and comes matured for one 'extra' year than the standard issue Chivas.   Other reviews.... A new oloroso-forward Chivas positioned to split between the 12 and 18 year olds? I got this. Refined and inviting nose of lemon pith, black fruits, and Kola Kubes. The velvety texture is wonderfully smooth, redolent of an apricot custard Danish, lime zest, raisin, currant, mixed peel, and walnut, with a growing bitter-lemon note. Quite unique finish, like sucking on lumpy Spanish lemons speckled with spices.

In 1950, Chivas Brothers began the search for a secure supply of fine malt whisky. Strathisla Distillery in Keith, the oldest and most beautiful distillery in the Highlands, was the obvious choice. The distillery was purchased and now the highly praised Strathisla Single Malt Scotch Whisky lies at the heart of the Chivas Regal blend. Aged for a minimum of 12 years, Chivas is distinguished by its light, lingering aroma, full, smooth, balanced palate with a hint of smoke - very subtle and complex. 'A good whisky blender knows intimately the character of all the whiskies he uses,' says Chivas's Master Blender Colin Scott. 'They are as unique as people. Some are subtle, some are bolder. My job is to produce a distinctive blend of whisky of the highest possible quality which is consistent in flavor and bouquet from year to year.   Described as a “next level blend” of more than twenty of Scotland’s rarest whiskies (including Strathisla, Longmorn and Glen Keith), others from distilleries now lost forever.

  Master blender, Colin Scott explains the pros of this release: "Quite simply you're buying craftsmanship." He adds, "You're buying the original distillers' expertise and you're buying our expertise with our aged caskets. With [The] Icon you're talking about an aged whisky of well over 25 years. What happens in that time is the whisky loses 2 per cent of its volume per annum - what we call the ‘angels' share’ - so you end up with only about half left. You lose volume, but you gain intensity in the flavours - but of course time is money so the whisky becomes more expensive."

  Befitting of such a luxury liquid, each bottle of Chivas Regal is presented in a hand-blown crystal decanter created by expert craftsmen at Dartington Crystal. The green glass echoes the original Chivas Regal bottle that was released in 1909.

  In total, the package is a symbol of utter luxury for a new era as well as a celebration of over 200 years of craft and excellence. As it will never be available in its current form again, it should also accrue value if you're willing to hide it away.

  After a 98 year absence, Chivas Regal 25 returned in 2007. A homage to the first ever Chivas Regal blend, first released in 1909, single malt from the Strathisla distillery, Speyside is said to contribute its defining sweetness. The heady bouquet offers a sublime medley of fruits and nuts, dark chocolate, nougat and vanilla. An exceptionally pure, soft, svelte textured delivery possesses remarkable vibrancy for a whisky of its ilk. Stewed fruits combine with lively spices, cocoa and vanilla wafer biscuit followed by a finish that's long and fresh, almost peppermint like, with hints of spice and cocoa persisting. Breed, length and balance combine in this regal blend, demonstrating what extra aged Scotch is all about. 40% Alc./Vol.

  A polished nose of red apple, cinnamon, caramels, and salted almonds makes for an enticing prospect on this showpiece dram. The taste exemplifies smoothness. The indulgent palate comprises dark cooked fruits, coffee, malty cocoa, sticky toffee pudding, fudge, and a fine line of orange. Roll it around the mouth: the integrated aged grains enable these select malts to achieve their full flavor potential. An exceptionally long finish has remnants of that toffee pudding and a well-sucked aniseed ball. Treat yourself.

  I’m happy to report the stuff is exceptional. It’s predominantly floral, with fruit and notes (apple, almond), and a light finish that you’re not expecting, given the deep orange/amber of the drink itself. Apricot, golden sultana, caramel, honeydew melon, honey, and vanilla meet cumin, cardamom, Parma violets, and orange jelly bean aromas. Richly flavored but lightly textured, there's lemon bonbon, sugar-dusted churro, vanilla custard, cinder toffee, hazelnut, and sharp apple acidity.   ...It seems that this baby’s recently been repackaged. I have to say I like the new packaging, but it’s what’s inside that counts. Colour: gold. Nose: it’s having a little trouble after the previous ones, with more sour notes (sour apples) and more raw oak, with a dusty side. On the other hand, there’s a rather complex fruitiness behind that, with even touches of mangos. Mangos always work in whisky! Also violets that I had already found in earlier expressions. Mouth: the oak feels, the attack is a bit tannic and drying (strong black tea) but once again, a complex fruitiness emerges after two seconds in your month, with marmalade, raisins and quince jelly. Love quince jelly. Quite some vanilla too. Finish: medium length. Honeyed and jammy. Comments: I think Cutty 12 improved a lot since four or five years.   Dewar’s, for one reason or another has become extremely popular amongst American whisky imbibers. Perhaps it is their preference for lighter tasting beers that extends into their tastes for Scotch? The sixth best-selling scotch in the world, John Dewar was the first to bottle whisky with his own name on the label as a guarantee of quality (circa 1846.) Dewar was also the first to move away from stoneware jars and kegs, to begin selling the product in bottles. As this bought the cost of the product down significantly, the practise soon became the custom. After Dewar died in 1880, his two sons Thomas & John set off abroad, successfully signing up 27 new agencies greatly expanding the business.

  In 1898, the brothers returned to build the Aberfeldy distillery, which to this day remains the primary source of the Dewars blend. Perhaps Dewars most curious claim to fame, however, occurred in the same year when the company hired Thomas Edison to shoot the worlds first ever moving picture advertisement for a commercial product. It featured, not surprisingly, dancing kilted Scots.

  This blend consists of up to 40 different single malt and grain whiskies. Light in colour and body, elegant with aromas and flavours of new oak dominating over a sweet, heathery background. Clean, faintly spicy, slightly drying finish. Dewar’s is a distinctive though subtle drink. As an introduction to Scotch, its unassuming character makes it ideal.

  This distinguished, deluxe Scotch is a subtle blend of 15 year old whiskies considered as special as the uniquely designed 'pinched' bottle that holds it. The container was actually the world's second trademark bottle design, officially registered in 1919 - Coca Cola's was the first. The wire netting around the bottle, now merely decorative, was originally used to keep the cork from expanding out in extremes of temperature.

  Tasting Note: Medium amber in colour, this is an elegant scotch with some complexity, wood aromatics and a light palate that finishes dry. Glenkinchie, a lowland distillery features strongly in the blend and is no doubt responsible for a degree of Dimple's softness. 40% alc./vol.

  Tasting note: Pours like young Riesling with a very pale straw hue. Floral aromas are grassy / mildly gingery. Fruitiness develops as hints of elderflower, geranium and delicate vanilla wafer. Crisp, spicy delivery with flavours of rice crackers, straw and vanilla. Finish is fresh, zesty with white pepper and delicate citrus peel / vanilla hinted at in the aftertaste. Bottled at 46.8% and without colouring or chill-filtration, top notch whiskies from Scotland’s islands are employed including those distilled on Islay, Arran, Orkney and Jura.   Tasting note: Pale straw / gold. Sea breeze then faint iodine followed by lanolin and kipper on the nose. Lipsmacking with a tangy lanolin-peat, salt'n'pepper profile. The peat smoke finds harmony with the nose of pine, lemon curd, dewy lawns, and vanilla fudge. This is gloriously full-flavored; the peatiness certainly delivers, but there is a pleasant nip of saltiness too. The black pepper finish leads to a long lasting salty smack on the lips.   Usually available at Duty Free stores only, Old Parr is named after Tom Parr (pictured on the label), once reputed to be the oldest man in England. Launched in 1909, the brand later found success in export markets such as Japan, Mexico and South America where it was easily identified in its distinctive dimpled and rounded square bottle. The basis of the blend today is Cragganmore, however Glendullan has also been a major component since World War II.

  Tasting note: Deep gold / bright copper penny colour. An attractive mix of cocoa, vanilla and breakfast fruit toast with exposure drawing out a fruit'n'nut chocolate aspect. Concentrated for the genre, with a spicy backbone that includes muesli, dried grass and light stewed fruit flavours, ending honeyed yet fresh, grainy, peppery and with excellent length. Quite richly styled. Gets better each time you taste it.40% Alc./Vol.

  Formerly known as the 'Family Reserve', Grant's have now re-branded this as 'Triple Wood'.

  William Grant began distilling in 1887, with the intention of supplying the then flourishing trade. When his sole distributer collapsed, Grant was left with no outlet for continueing sales. Grant urgently needed to invent and market his own brand. In desperation, he passed the challenge onto his son-in-law who, so the story goes, made over five hundred calls to various firms around the country. He managed to sell one dozen bottles! Business gradually improved however, and the original Grants we know today was suitably marketed under the "Steadfast" label. The product has since enhanced its image to cater for numerous international markets, including the adoption of its striking triangular bottle.

  Tasting Notes: Aromas include oatmeal biscuit, hints of dried fruits and peat as well as notes of honey. A fresh, clean and light entry has sustained interest, dovetailing into a balanced, delicately spicy, medium dry mid palate with a flourish of raisin and smoke to the cereal and honey flavours. Add this to your shortlist of daily drams. Much improved since our last tasting. 40% Alc./Vol.

  Previous review: [October 2000] A lighter style blend, similar in weight and character to Teacher’s. The nose is plump, oily and semi-sweet with notes of honey, oatmeal, and biscuit. The influences of Balvenie and Glenfiddich (which are also produced by William Grant and Sons) are evident. Subtle flavours of almond, toffee, chocolate and vanilla make for everyday drinking 40% alc./vol.

Exhibits a lovely malt/grain balance with gentle spices and a fluff of peat adding depth at mid palate. Finishes crisp, clean and beautifully dry with good persistence. Until recently, Gold Label was reserved exclusively for the duty free market. The product has now been released at the retail level and provides lovers of Johnnie Walker with an opportunity to taste the portfolio’s "older brother".

  Conceived by Alexander Walker in 1920 for a centenary blend, Gold Label had to wait another 30 years to see the light of day, due to shortages of aged malts caused by the First World War. It remained as jottings in a notebook until the early 1950s when, shortly after Alexander's death, the Johnnie Walker master blender completed this unfinished symphony. However, this time shortages caused by the Second World War, meant that bottlings were exclusively reserved for the company's blenders and directors. From its smoky, caramel and vanilla aroma to its creamy, honeyed taste, this Scotch whisky finishes with a light and lingering spiciness.   Johnnie Walker Green Label is the only whisky in the Walker range to carry the 'Blended Malt Scotch Whisky' certification. It replaces the older term 'Vatted Malt' and indicates that the whisky has been blended exclusively from single malts, and not blended with inexpensive grain whisky. The Walker family began buying some of Scotland's finest distilleries over 100 years ago. Now, with over 27 malt whisky producers in ownership, the company doesn't have to look too far for the very best material. They can choose from the cream of the crop, and have also acquired over a century of distilling experience in the process, guaranteeing the quality of their whisky well into the future.

  Undisputed as one of the all-time classics in its genre, Green label is instantly recognisable as a Walker blend, with a profile of fresh and slightly fruity aromas with hints of mango and toffee followed by the trademark whiff of peat & sea air that distinguishes most of the JW stable.

  Tasting note: Brassy gold / impeccable clarity. A sophisticated, expressive nose offers an assemblage of soft, sweet peat, oatmeal biscuit, dried mango / fig, white pepper with good freshness - sustained even after several minutes in the glass.   Other reviews... Just as complex as Johnnie Walker Gold, but fuller and more richly textured. (Not surprising, given that there are no grain whiskies in Johnnie Walker Green.) This is one of the finer vatted malts on the market. Its flavors are well-integrated. You’ll find creamy toffee and nougat at its core, which is then layered with notes of vanilla, mint, fresh brine, and even a hint of mustard seed. Excitingly fresh and vibrant on the finish. A whisky for both the blend and single malt drinker. And at the price, it is also fairly valued for an all-malt whisky.

On the palate, this has a light, floaty texture with flavors of red apple at its core, followed by a roar of spice, citrus peel, lemon, sharp fruity acidity, vanilla pod, and a touch of walnut.   This pale gold, limited-edition dram is named in honor of House Stark from the Song of Ice and Fire book series, better known by its television name, Game of Thrones. Designed for Highballs or pouring over ice, it offers a nose of vanilla sponge cake sweetness, dried grasses, green melon, spring blossoms, white pepper, and a faint trace of peppermint. It has a soft, caressing character, with melon, pulpy summer fruits, sour lemon, butterscotch, barley sugar, vanilla caramel, and a later supportive fizzle of spice. It concludes with a finish of sweet vanilla and fruits.

  Is this the Holy Grail of blended Scotch Whisky? The Blue Label blend echoes early pioneering days when Johnnie Walker would select a small number of whiskies in his own local grocery shop in order to create an outstanding blend for the specific tastes of a highly valued customer. John Walker and his son Alexander began their earliest blending experiments using a limited range of whiskies, drawn mainly from the islands, the western and northern Highlands and a few distilleries in Speyside. After rejecting whiskies that didn't meet their standards, they found that the very best were strictly limited in supply. Following their lead, the Johnnie Walker master-blender developed Blue Label as a celebration of the founder's unremitting standards for only the highest quality whisky.The blend is similar to the taste and character of some of the earliest whisky blends created in the 19th century, possessing a traditionally rich peaty taste combined with an exceptionally smooth, deep, distinctly malty flavour. Whiskies of up to 60 years old contribute to its character.

  In 1993, a panel of international experts at the International Wine and Spirit Competition awarded Johnnie Walker Blue Label its most prestigious medal, the Gold Medal for the Best Blended Whisky. Indeed this is a venerable whisky and one that would have been much appreciated by Walkers clients. A toasty, sweet aroma is complemented by a peaty and spicy taste that develops into heady flavours of oak, dark-chocolate and rich fruitcake. Comprising 16 of the world's rarest whiskies, Blue Label is dominated by Islay malt whisky, and balanced by several rich Speyside malts that have undergone exceptional periods of sherry oak maturation.

  ...Nose: Opens very slowly to reveal a mass of aromas: lanolin, smoke, hessian, dried fruit, polished wood floors, oak, liquorice, cake, silky red fruit, cream. It remained as jottings in a notebook until the early 1950s when, shortly after Alexander's death, the Johnnie Walker master blender completed this unfinished symphony. However, this time shortages caused by the Second World War, meant that bottlings were exclusively reserved for the company's blenders and directors. From its smoky, caramel and vanilla aroma to its creamy, honeyed taste, this Scotch whisky finishes with a light and lingering spiciness.   Black Label was first introduced in 1910 although its origins go back as far as 1820 when Walker blended his original 'Kilmarnock Whisky' and began selling it from his grocery shop. The location of the shop had a great deal to do with Black Labels success. Situated on a main trading route near an old poll gate, the shop attracted passing merchants and locals. It was through these travellers that the whiskys fame quickly spread.

  This aged version of the classic Red Label enjoys a similar cult following. Its unique complexity is achieved by expertly blending an extremely diverse, but complementary range of malt whiskies, each of which has been matured for a minimum of 12 years and some for much longer. In total, up to 40 malts and grain whiskies make up the Johnnie Walker Black Label blend. Island and Islay malts deliver spice, richness and lingering peat. Speyside malts make an important contribution to the depth of taste, bringing smoky malt, fruitiness, apple freshness and a rich sherry character to the blend. At the heart of Black Label lies 12 year old Cardhu, an outstanding malt from Speyside, which imparts silkiness, a characteristic which has made it famous as a single malt.

  To date, Black Label has won more international awards for excellence than any other deluxe whisky. In the 1880s, Old Highland won medals in Sydney and Paris. Over 100 years later, in 1994, Black Label picked up gold medals at the 1994 Monde Selection Awards and the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC), where it also won a trophy for Best Blended Whisky. In 1996, it won gold again at IWSC for the best deluxe Scotch Whisky.

  Black Label has many admirers, but perhaps none so famous or devoted as Sir Winston Churchill, whose still life painting 'Bottlescape' (1932) proudly captures the familiar contours of his whisky of choice. Indeed, the company's old timers recall the Herculean efforts required to keep the British PM supplied with his favourite tipple during wartime rationing!

  Johnnie Walker Gold has had several incarnations, however, it's the original 18 year old age statement that's most prized by collectors and said to taste the best. A blend of 15 different whiskies (with a good dose of Clynelish), this edition was on the market from 1992 through to 2009. Around 2013 The Centenary was phased out in favour of the current Gold Label Reserve which carries no age statement.   Johnnie Walker Green Label is the only whisky in the Walker range to carry the 'Blended Malt Scotch Whisky' certification. It replaces the older term 'Vatted Malt' and indicates that the whisky has been blended exclusively from single malts, and not blended with inexpensive grain whisky. The Walker family began buying some of Scotland's finest distilleries over 100 years ago. Now, with over 27 malt whisky producers in ownership, the company doesn't have to look too far for the very best material. They can choose from the cream of the crop, and have also acquired over a century of distilling experience in the process, guaranteeing the quality of their whisky well into the future.

  Undisputed as one of the all-time classics in its genre, Green label is instantly recognisable as a Walker blend, with a profile of fresh and slightly fruity aromas with hints of mango and toffee followed by the trademark whiff of peat & sea air that distinguishes most of the JW stable.

  Tasting note: Brassy gold / impeccable clarity. A sophisticated, expressive nose offers an assemblage of soft, sweet peat, oatmeal biscuit, dried mango / fig, white pepper with good freshness - sustained even after several minutes in the glass. Full and well rounded in the mouth with nipping spices carrying the malty attack, along with flavours of salted crackers, restrained peat and an oily-yet-crisp finish with strong staying power. The vivacious and intensely flavoured character of this vatting will keep you coming back time and again. Forget Blue Label: Green and Gold remain the stars in the JW line up. 43% Alc./Vol.

  Other reviews... Just as complex as Johnnie Walker Gold, but fuller and more richly textured. (Not surprising, given that there are no grain whiskies in Johnnie Walker Green.) This is one of the finer vatted malts on the market. Its flavors are well-integrated. You’ll find creamy toffee and nougat at its core, which is then layered with notes of vanilla, mint, fresh brine, and even a hint of mustard seed. Excitingly fresh and vibrant on the finish. A whisky for both the blend and single malt drinker. And at the price, it is also fairly valued for an all-malt whisky.

  Is this the Holy Grail of blended Scotch Whisky? The Blue Label blend echoes early pioneering days when Johnnie Walker would select a small number of whiskies in his own local grocery shop in order to create an outstanding blend for the specific tastes of a highly valued customer. John Walker and his son Alexander began their earliest blending experiments using a limited range of whiskies, drawn mainly from the islands, the western and northern Highlands and a few distilleries in Speyside. After rejecting whiskies that didn't meet their standards, they found that the very best were strictly limited in supply. Following their lead, the Johnnie Walker master-blender developed Blue Label as a celebration of the founder's unremitting standards for only the highest quality whisky.The blend is similar to the taste and character of some of the earliest whisky blends created in the 19th century, possessing a traditionally rich peaty taste combined with an exceptionally smooth, deep, distinctly malty flavour.

  A new addition to the Johnnie Walker family. The whisky was created taking Black Label as a blueprint and adding heavily-peated malts, some aged in deeply charred oak casks. Memories of our last tasting of the original Johnnie Walker Black about one year ago (the blend varies) recollect an all round richer, sweeter, oilier whisky whereas rather than doubling the experience, this seems to have halved it. For those who enjoy lighter Islays this is akin to a young Caol Ila. It would make a pleasant food whisky.

  Tasting note: Deep gold colour. Moderate aromas of sweet cereals, fruit cake and clove are interwoven with peat that has a salty, kippery edge. Entry is light and silky to the point of being water like. Mid palate is light to medium bodied, with soft spices adding depth. Mild flavours of toffee apple and fruit cake seamlessly combine with sweet grains and delicate peat followed by a subtle, drying aftertaste of fruit cake and peat. This is exceptionally smooth - if that’s what’s most important to you - but the overall delivery is a little thin, especially with regard to the finish and aftertaste. 40% Alc./Vol.

  The world's number one selling blended Scotch and the preferred choice of whisky lovers every where. Johnnie Walker Red Label is a full-flavoured spirit that is a blend of Highland malt and Lowland grain whiskies. Red Label was originally created in 1909 for the new Scotch drinker who was inclined to mix whisky with ice, water, soda or in a variety of cocktails. By widening the range of whiskies used in his father's Old Highland Whisky, Alexander Walker developed Red Label as a smoother and lighter alternative - this was a break from the traditional deeply flavoured, full bodied Scotch whiskies of the past and was considered a more approachable drink.   Tasting note: Brilliant, bright gold appearance. Aromas offer a peaty top note hovering over sweet, fat, oily grains. The palate possesses good concentration with the peat laced sweet grains and gentle spices contributing to a fat, rich, oily mouth feel. Aftertaste of vanilla and sweet cereals with the peat re-emerging. Technically faultless and an achievement given how much of this stuff is churned out. But this bottling (and they do vary) is lacking freshness being quite sweet and clunky throughout. In fact, it's almost a little out of balance. Some fresh oak required in the mix? 40% Alc./Vol.

  A brand produced by the Bladnoch Distillery in the lowlands, launched to celebrate their 200th anniversary. Bright gold. Moderate scents of vanilla, clove and light fruit cake. Second pass suggests stewed fruits. Light'n'easy in the mouth with pleasant mocha and muesli-like flavours rounded out by a soft flurry of spice. Ends drying, brisk and woody with subtle grains in the aftertaste. 40% Alc./Vol.

  Other reviews... The main dresser should be Bladnoch but there is also some Islay and some Speyside, as well as some grain whisky. Let's hope this baby is Bladnoch-driven, and not just some kind of anonymous blandola (going a bit too far once more, S.) Colour: gold. Nose: it's malty, it's cakey, it is pleasantly waxy (beeswax), it's got a little wood smoke, some earl grey tea, lillies, honeysuckle, touches of earth… Well, imagine all blends would be like this! Couldn't the industry pull this off? Mouth: huge success despite the low strength. Same flavours as on the nose, plus more citrus, perhaps from Bladnoch's malt. This is a perfect blend – you don't even feel the grain whiskies. We're not far from Johnnie Walker's Blue Label, to tell you the truth. Exactly. Finish: perfect fresh and honeyed finish, with this lovely citrusy signature in the end. Comments: surprised and impressed, I am, which wasn't the case when I tried an earlier version leisurely.   Debuting in the 1980s, these long discontinued bottlings of the Famous Grouse were the real deal, with a good proportion of well-aged Macallan making it into the mix. As you can imagine, the quality of the whisky was high, and reportedly, mostly drawn from x sherry casks. It was also an expensive blended malt to maintain, hence production ceased around the time of this edition in 2007. The contents are matched by a luxurious presentation. 43% Alc./Vol.

Today that tradition continues with the release of three new super-premium blended Malt whiskies from Gloags. It is a credit to master distiller John Ramsay and his team that a brand selling more than 30 million bottles of whisky in some 100 countries can conjure up  and win acclaim for a 30 year old luxury product such as this.   Blended and bottled by the Gloag family, whose business was founded in 1800. The Famous Grouse is testimony to the unsurpassed blending experience of six generations of this family, which accounts for the consistent quality and smooth character of the blend. Like so many early whisky companies, Matthew Gloag & Son Ltd., has its origins in the early 19th century, when the founder established himself as a grocer and wine merchant in Perth. Matthew Gloag bought malt whiskies from distilleries around Scotland and built up a reputation for his cellars.

  This is the new look for the whisky formerly known as "The Naked Grouse" which has transitioned to a new design and 100% recyclable packaging. The brand began with a grain whisky component, but in response to the popularity of single malts, it was decided to make it an 'all malt' in 2017. Highland Park, Glenturret, Glenrothes and Macallan are / were the core ingredients. The final composition was matured in first-fill and refill American and European oak casks, then finished in first-fill oloroso Sherry butts for a further six months.

  Tasting note: Deep amber-gold. Strong sherry input brings whisps of sulphur / struck match and gingery warmth, with a drying, nutty, muesli-like edge to the malt. A little thin on entry, building concentration and spice through the middle; Biscuity and crisp, with light dried fruits, bitter chocolate and some peel freshness carrying the finish.   Tasting note: Composed from 41 different whiskies and "Triple Matured" for extra character with a finishing in Sherry casks, this deep amber coloured blend suggests a good proportion of malt is in the mix. Medium bodied and with enough substance to enjoy on its own, it finishes on a sherried note with flavours of spiced raisin cake and stewed plum. Sweet grains play second fiddle. 40% Alc./Vol.

  Other reviews... If you're looking for a big flavoured dram and with something approaching a vicious left uppercut, this might be a useful bottle to have on hand. ..a veritable orgy of big, oily, juicy, murky flavours...You cannot but like it, in the same way you might occasionally like rough sex.
