  The very first rum from a country many Aussies are familiar with as a holiday destination – Vanuatu! ‘Yumi Rum’ means ‘Our Rum’ in the region's dialect and the brand is the brainchild of a passionate local, Pierre-Luc Chabot, who kickstarted sugar plantations on the island in order to make rum. Due to the lack of agricultural machinery, everything is done by hand, and while official organic certification is years away, the farms simply couldn’t be any more organic. What's more, the cane varieties the Efate farmers are cultivating are heirloom Vanuatuan varieties. Fresh crushed cane juice wash is run with three plates of a 500l hybrid pot/column still operation. The distillate is then matured in the Port Vila warehouse in four used bourbon barrels from four of the world’s leading producers – Peerless Distilling, Heaven Hill Distillery, Brown Foreman and Jim Beam.

  Sleek, glossy, lithe and very accessible, the 83 Islands style could be compared to well-aged Lowlands grain whisky, meaning it's lighter bodied than a Jamaican or Bajan, rather closer to mainland rums from Guatemala or Venezeula. The purity of the spirit shines and it comes with some lovely touches of caramelised pineapple, dried banana and mango amongst light sugars and spices. The result is mild enough to share neat with an inexperienced friend, yet confident and complex enough to serve to seasoned rum drinkers. Note: the ABV on the front label states 40%, however the actual ABV is 41.5% Alc./Vol., as declared on the back label.

  Other reviews... Nose: Sweet floral and grassy notes. Fresh cut cane billets sitting in the sun, some plump sultana notes and a very feint whiff of sweet polythene glue. Palate: A lovely delicate spirit, very little pepper, sweet fruit salad notes and very little, if any, funk at all.   The intention here was to create a spiced style 'rum' that wasn't simply driven by vanilla sweetness. Gunnery uses pot distilled spirits derived from both sugar cane and molasses, blending Australian native ingredients with traditional rum spices. Botanicals include Riverland orange and lemon aspen, Cinnamon Myrtle, Bush Tomato, Native Pepper Berry, locally Roasted Coffee Beans, Vanilla and Bush Honey.

  Tasting note: Clear / very pale straw blush. Warming, semi sweet aromas. Vanilla, then fruity dark chocolate (orange / fig), faint peel freshness and muted cinnamon warmth.   Notes from the bottlers... On the nose, aromas of old rubber tires and unripe banana mix with overripe paya, guava and powerboat petrol. A lighter and brighter side shines through on the palate, with glorious powdered citrus fruit juice and oversweet lemonade, sherbet dip, Italian ice and blue raspberry softening that boozy funk from the nose.

  Jamaica's Clarendon Distillery (est.1949 and initially owned by the Monymusk Sugar Factory) is a large plant, home to about 5-6 column still marques and about 20 pot still marques. Amongst these is Monymusk, named after one of the oldest sugar cane plantations in Jamaica, located in Lionel Town, Clarendon. To confuse matters, there's also a brand called 'Monymusk', but that has only been around since 2012. The historical connection remains, as Clarendon is located on six acres in the Monymusk Estate. About 90% of the total output goes to Diageo's Captain Morgan and Myers brands, which in total accounts for about 60% of all Jamaican bulk rum exports. In short, Clarendon is a hybrid set up - on the one hand churning out industrial column still distillate for global brands, while on the other creating various esoteric and highly-regarded light and heavy ester pot-distilled rums. Obviously, this selection falls into the latter category. Although Adelphi aren't giving much away, it's rumoured that this was fully matured in a refill Madeira cask. At a potent 56.8%, it promises to deliver an all-natural and truly evocative Jamaican experience. From a run of 402 bottles.

  Built in 1750 and sought after for its powerful, estery, pot-distilled spirit, the Hampden estate is renowned for possessing the best cane lands in Jamaica producing the highest tonne sugar from tonne cane milled. This indie edition was bottled at 54.3% Alc./Vol. with an outturn of 346 bottles from cask JM1.

  Notes from Adelphi... Deep amber in hue; little beading. American oak. Banana bread, caramel toffees, with a vegetal (artichoke, linseed oil) base surrounded by tropical floral scents. The taste is sweet and fragrant, with burnt sugar, and pop-corn in the aftertaste. A drop of water increases the caramel and oiliness, with tropical fruit juice and a rummy aftertaste.

  Tasting note: A tribute to Admiral George Brydges Rodney, a British naval officer who distinguished himself in 1782 during the Battle of the Saintes. Officer’s Release No.1 was column distilled in 2006 then tropically aged in ex-bourbon casks for thirteen years before nine-months in ex-port casks. Deep copper in colour, the aroma opens with hints of balsamic and spent Bourbon barrels, followed by richer notes of rum infused fruit cake, dried coconut and port soaked pipe tobacco.   This rum from Trinidad is produced by the same company that manufactures Angostura aromatic bitters that originated in Angostura, Venezuela over 170 years ago. Angostura 1824 celebrates the tradition of excellence established by the house of Angostura almost two centuries ago. The rum is hand casked, hand blended and hand bottled after twelve years of maturation in high toast oak barrels. This is an extremely smooth yet rich spirit and a departure from the lighter rums Angostura is known for.

  Tasting note: Bright copper colour with a pale copper hue. The multi layered nose reveals top notes of pistachio nuts, vanilla and spice, then more profound, heavier scents of stewed stone fruits, creme-caramel and a whiff of brandy sauce. A sumptuous palate delivers a combination of banana cake, vanilla / chocolate fudge and all spice, refreshed by some orange zest and pine notes. Superb balance and mouthfeel. We do know that it employs both column and pot still rums aged for a minimum of 12 years and reportedly contains liquid up to 18 years old. Appleton 'Rare Casks' ranks among a handful of readily available bottlings we'd recommend to anyone breaking into serious rum connoisseurship. Leading with powerful aromas of spiced apple, lean molasses and buttered fruit toast, developing banana confectionary, rancio and nutty, grilled corn-like notes, it also boasts ideal sweet/dry balance with spicy, fruity, brown sugar flavours countered by hints of banana cake and fine astringency. There are traces of walnut fudge, oaky vanilla and understated molasses at the last.   This cocktail was adapted from Jerry Thomas's How to Mix Drinks, or The Bon Vivant's Companion (1862).

  45 ml Appleton 12 Year Old Rum
  10 ml Curacao Dry Orange
  10 ml Framboise (Raspberry) Liqueur
  20 ml Lemon Juice
  1 Lemon Wedge
  Method: Assemble all the ingredients in a mixing glass with ice, squeeze the lemon wedge and drop it in, shake well and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Note: This can also be serve over crushed ice with berries as a garnish. Variation: When raspberries are in season, omit the raspberry syrup and muddle 6 to 8 raspberries with the lemon juice and curacao in the bottom of the mixing glass. Add remaining ingredients and shake well with ice.

  Apart from a range of fabulous gold and dark rums, Appleton also offer an affordable white version composed of 1-4 year old molasses based distillates. Spirits from both pot and column still are used, with the final blend charcoal filtered for a clear appearance.   First launched in 2009, now is a good time to indulge in this Jamaican legend. It's only the second of its kind to be released in the distillery's 269 year history. Including liquid aged for more than 50 years, Master distiller, Joy Spence describes it as "one of my favourite rums" - a significant statement for an industry veteran of over twenty years. With a complex profile of vanilla, toasted oak, ginger, cinnamon and a smooth, long, spiced honey finish, it's guaranteed to impress serious rum aficionados. The age statement alone is staggering. Given the tropical maturation, Appleton started with 26 barrels and ended with just 13 due to the extreme evaporation rate. From those thirteen barrels just 4000 bottles have been released globally. Nothing has been added to the rum. Beautifully presented with a heavy 'decanter' style bottle and decorated stopper, we have less than a handful on offer.

  ...On the nose there is orchard blossoms, golden apples stewed with maple, cinnamon, ginger, cedar and candied orange zest delicately buttressed by vanilla. The palate is much lighter than you may expect from the nosing, but the flavors are intricate iterations of the aromas— presented with flowers, oxidized fruit, dark wood tones, voluptuous baking spices and creamy caramel/vanilla.   While rum in general makes for a fantastic cocktail spirit, extra-old expressions like this really need to be appreciated straight. Master Blender, Joy Spence walks a tightrope with the 21 YO - the trick is adding extra layers of sensory excitement at the risk of becoming overly oaked, while at the same time, retaining some of the youthful, estery sweetness and vibrancy that's Appleton's house style. This gets the balance close to perfect. It's no wonder it was “Spirit of the Year” at the World Spirit Awards back in 2011. Just 12,000 bottles of this rare rum are produced annually, and Australia receives a special share in recognition of the growing group of consumers who have been passionately enjoying the aged blends of the Appleton Estate since the brand launched here in 2004.

  Rooted in traditions that go past the American Revolution, not much has changed at Appleton since the 18th century: water is still sourced from a spring on the estate, small batch pot distillation remains the norm, done on-site using a proprietary yeast strain propagated from the estate-grown cane. The estate's versatile blends have been quietly changing the perception of rum, with homes and bars across the country embracing the rum renaissance. This bottling ups the ante to yet another level of sophistication that demands your attention, and at a price that's impossible to resist.

  Tasting note: Perfectly polished copper colour dazzles in the glass. Whiffs of shellac, resin and orange zest in the opening pass, evolving aromas of hazelnut / pistachio, walnut slice, raw sugar, extra-aged muscat and cocoa. 3-4 minutes exposure accents clove, vanilla bean and draws out hints of wine-soaked pears. Outstanding. Two decades in barrel sees the sugars reigned in with spicy oak overlaying flavours of raisins, dates, light molasses; finishes drier than the mid palate stage with threads of muscat wine, rancio and all-spice woven through the aftertaste.   Appleton Estate is the oldest and perhaps most famous of all of Jamaica's sugarcane estates. It is nestled in the fertile Nassau Valley on either side of the Black River in the Southwest of Jamaica. The origins of Appleton Estate date back to 1655 when the English captured Jamaica from the Spaniards. Frances Dickinson, whose grandsons Caleb and Ezekiel were the earliest known owners of the Appleton Estate, took part in that conquest of Jamaica, and it is believed that Appleton Estate was part of the land grant that Dickinson received as reward for his services. After many generations of ownership by the Dickinson family, the Appleton Estate was sold out of the family in 1845. From then on, it was owned by a procession of prominent Jamaican families, each of whom helped to increase the size and potential of the Appleton Estate by purchasing additional acreage of land planted with sugarcane. During these years, the Appleton Estate was producing several different pot still rums, and it began to gain a reputation as a reliable source for quality rum, a reputation that continues to this day.   In 1962, as Jamaica approached full independence, several hand-selected barrels of rum were set aside with the intention of creating a special blend that would one day be bottled to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the country’s independence. Matured for a minimum of 50 full years, these rums have been looked after, first by Master Blender Owen Tulloch, then by his protégé and Appleton Estate’s current Master Blender, Joy Spence.

  Deemed as "aged to perfection" by Spence, the resulting rum is reputedly the world’s oldest barrel aged expression. (All of the rum was aged for at least 50 years, thus the age statement is absolute. It does not refer to an 'average age' or to an 'oldest component'.) More importantly, word has it that this is truly rum of historic caliber, "...with a range of flavours and overall gravity that befits its 50 years in oak, but without being too tannic".   The rum itself is a combination of pot-stilled and column-stilled rums, though the exact percentage of each in the final blend is not disclosed. The barrels were all x-Bourbon, originally shipped as staves and reassembled by coopers at Appleton Estate. Thirteen barrels made it through the process, each chained to the warehouse floor for added security and evaluated twice a year by Spence.

  Given the high evaporation rates, the combined contents yielded a mere 800 bottles. The rum was filled into crystal decanters produced by Glencairn Crystal of the United Kingdom and designed after the curvaceous shape of other Appleton vessels. The brass and cork stopper is finished in gold, and gold screen printing on the bottle reflects a host of national symbols of Jamaica. To round things off, the rum is presented in a black lacquered gift box with gold-finished brass hinges. It contains a commemorative booklet that outlines Jamaica’s march to Independence and the journey of this astonishing rum.

  Other reviews... What we have here is a completely fine Bacardi rum, competently made, nicely aged, a decent Latin-style hooch, light, easy drinking, with some taste chops to write home about – even the slightly added dosage doesn’t detract from that, though I think it’s unnecessary, really. Any surprise would be if it wasn’t all those things, and it is indeed a ways above the made-for-the-mixing-proletariat Superior and Gold and Anejo that sell by the tanker load and keep Bacardi’s sales numbers flying high. On top of that, the Diez is demonstrably better than the 4YO “Cuatro”, addressing many of that young premium’s weaknesses: it is more complex, has more going on and seems more suited for the sipper’s glass.  What it doesn’t do is eclipse the solidity of the 8YO “Ocho” which also ticks many of the same boxes; moreover, the Diez seems content to go down the familiar path of “same but incrementally better,” and is hardly a serious upgrade from any of its junior brethren. The makers seem to have had no inclination to find new worlds to explore or new profiles to demonstrate,  that would show some innovation, a willingness to go off the reservation, if only a little. I find that disappointing. There are enough standard-strength, standard-profiled, standard-priced rums in Bacardi’s stable, and in anyone’s corner shop.   ...For a very long time first thing that appeared in my mind when hearing "Bacardi" was their basic line of mass rum production, meant to be mixed in every pub all around the world. However, at some point I decided to give a chance to something more complex from this brand, and here I am - my meeting with 10 yo Bacardi can be described as fully enjoyable and - as stated in the title - this product is a decent aged rum. Slight alcohol burn at the end made my score to be one point less in comparison to other spirits of similar age, nevertheless I would recommend Gran Rezerva Diez 10 yo to anyone interested in exploring the Bacardi brand.   Classic Cocktail: The Daiquiri Strawberry
  The Daiquiri is a family of cocktails whose main ingredients have traditionally been rum and lime juice. There are several versions however, with some like the Strawberry Daiquiri having a texture similar to a smoothie. Originally the drink was served in a tall glass packed with cracked ice. A teaspoon of sugar was poured over the ice and the juice of one or two limes was squeezed over the sugar. Two or three ounces of rum completed the mixture. The glass was then frosted by stirring with a long-handled spoon.

  Balcones are better known for their sizeable single malts. Few are aware that they diversified into rum back in 2013. It's taken a while to get the formula right, but this is getting closer. Initially dense, woody and closed, the aroma needs time to pick up steam, developing with notes of dried mango, molasses cake, cinnamon and ginger bread. Bristling wood spices and nipping alcohol come with the territory, however classic Demerara flavours like fruit cake, cinnamon, bitter dark chocolate and dry molasses only gain definition at the last. While it shows impressive staying power, overall, this remains an understated, unadulterated style that could be mistaken for a rum-finished version of their single malt (perhaps they've matured this in x-single malt casks?)   The casks used for BCS release #1 rum were on an Atlantic voyage that spanned almost a year before they reached Kentucky. Rather than issuing them as single barrels, experiments with countless combinations came up with this outstanding blend of vintage rums from Barbados, Jamaica and Guyana. It looks to be a real gem from BCS. The bad news is, we have next to nothing from an outturn of 483 bottles. 62.1% Alc./Vol.

  Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Strong notes reminiscent of tepache, a Mexican fermented beverage made from pineapple rinds. Others emerge - fruity notes of green grapes and lime hull, earthy notes of oyster shell and potting soil, and very Jamaican vegetal notes of Kalamata olive, caper, pine needle tea, scallion, and pollen. Palate: Comparatively gentle, the Guyanese lending demerara syrup, purple plum, and crème de cassis, the Barbados bringing characteristic florals and spice: rosehip tea, cinnamon, and star anise. These notes are held together by a fresh maritime character -- seaweed, sea salt, and a little glycerine richness. Finish: The Jamaican hogo is back, as is the tepache, but it’s also spicy, with notes of ginger, turmeric, and catnip. Lychee makes an unexpected appearance.

  Notes from the bottlers... Nose: The esters are so concentrated and varied that the aroma presents first with the unmistakable monolithic smell of funky Jamaican rum. Slowly, the Barbados and Demerara rums drive a wedge into the funk and focus the profile first around berries and flowers. There’s a fatty element at times reminiscent of tahini or browned butter. A kiss of wood spice, sauna and nutmeg is present. Palate: The alcohol keeps the sweetness in check, the tannins are modest and sandy. Tthe flavors mirror the nose: Blackberry, rosehip, nutmeg, tahini. The mineral side really shines and gives a maritime feel: crushed oyster shell, kelp, fried clams, dry vermouth. Finish: The tropical fruits pop, with lime zest, lychee, navel orange, and pineapple. Some soft resinous touches of mastic and pine pitch. A hint of savory enoki mushroom and sweet crab meat.

  Sold out at the distillery, Beenleigh's award winning 'Flood Rum' is a one-off created in the aftermath of Cyclone Debbie. On March the 30th 2017, Debbie unleased her fury on Brisbane. Many homes were damaged; many had to flee. Brisbane effectively shut down. Beenleigh Distillery, located on the banks of the Albert River, is no stranger to the effects of catastrophic floods. 1887 and 1974 were the “big ones” which the Distillery withheld. But there were many more in between. On the 31st of March 2017, the flood waters broke through and flooded Beenleigh. The team had just put down a rum ferment (usually a 48-to-72-hour process). But the water rose so quickly that the pumps no longer worked, and the ferment was effectively stuck in tanks for a 6-month period before they could be repaired. Upon the recovery and operations continuing, the 127 day & 130 day fermentations were distilled and resulted in twelve ex-Bourbon American oak barrels being filled. To our knowledge, these are being sold as annual single barrel releases, hand-bottled at 46%.

  This edition, exclusively for 'The Rum Club' follows the inaugural release in 2021. It was bottled in January 2022, giving 4 years & 5 months maturation. At the time of writing, Flood Rum won its fifth Gold Medal after taking it home at the International Spirits Challenge, Australian Distilled Spirits Awards, International Wine and Spirit Competition, & San Francisco World Spirit Competition last year.   The Barbados edition is just one in BBR's first batch of value, entry-level rums which also includes Jamaica, Guatemala and Nicaragua. Predictably, it hails from the acclaimed Foursquare distillery. A blend of pot and column distilled components bottled at an accessible 40.5%, expect a lighter style with attractive notes of honey, ripe banana and melon.

  Other reviews... I’m judging the rum alongside something like the 3 year old Neptune Rum and Doorly’s 5 Year Old. My initial impressions based on the price point and nose is that this is likely a blend of rums aged between 3-5 years. With the majority of that time (say less a year) being in Barbados. Sipped this is a pretty spicy affair. Lots of oak spice, ginger and more than a touch of bitterness. It’s a very dry rum. The initial sip is quite deceptive as further sips of this rum reveal a lot more of the rum. There is a lot more sweetness on the second and third sip with some really nice notes of toffee, dark chocolate and some cashew nuts. Finish wise it’s a little short in terms of flavour. The oak and spiced linger for a fair period but the tastier aspects of the rum quickly fade. All in all it’s a nicely balanced glass of rum but it isn’t anywhere near as complex as something from the Exceptional Cask Series. In terms of profile it is probably closest to Doorly’s 5 and 8. It’s unfussy, uncomplicated and a fairly straightforward, easy going Barbados rum. - thefatrumpirate.com

  Better known as an independent bottler of high quality Scottish grains and malts, Berry Bros. & Rudd's collection now extends into rums, representing a range of countries from Jamaica and Barbados to Mauritius and Fiji. These can vary greatly in smell and taste: spicy or fruity, white or dark, smoky or bright. Though broadly speaking, for BBR, there are three distinctive styles which have been shaped by historical colonial forces: British, French and Spanish. Rums made in English-speaking regions, such as Barbados and Belize, tend to be heavier and richer in style. Those made in French-speaking areas, such as Haiti, are likely to be leafy and smoky; while Spanish-speaking countries, such as Nicaragua and Guatemala, are likely to produce a lighter, brighter style of rum. In this example, the spirit offers an intriguingly restrained nose, with notes of baklava, crepe bandage and marginally undercooked arrowroot biscuits, with maybe a hint of curry leaf. The palate is dominated by sugar cane, although pleasingly dry on a finish where any wood is beautifully smothered in cane honey. Mojitos all round, please! 40.5% Alc./Vol.

  This is a new addtion to the BBR spirits line up. Founded in 1698, the historic Berry Bros and Rudd wine merchants follow a long standing tradition of British shippers sourcing their own casks of unique wines and spirits. With an entire division dedicated to the procurement of spirits, BBR are able to unearth gems in the making. Whilst there are no official notes on the source of this bottling, a collaboration with the Fijian rum company, makers of the Bounty overproof is more than likely. First released as an 8 year old, This anticipated follow-up takes Fijian rum to unexpected levels of sippability.
