    $125. 00
    Bottle
    $1500.00 Dozen
    ABV: 45%

Havana Club's 'Seleccion de Maestros' replaces the Cuban Barrel Proof product with new packaging, however, it's reputedly the same rum.

As Dave Russell from www.rumgallery.com points out, Australians should feel privileged to have access to the fine Rums of Cuba. "US relations with Cuba is easing slightly, but more change is needed to end the stalemate of the past half-century, that prevents Americans from traveling freely to Cuba or even purchasing Cuban rum in the States. Most American rum lovers just don’t know what they’re missing. One sip, and you’ll understand why Havana Club Cuban Barrel Proof is one of the leading brands in the Caribbean and Europe. Travel to the Caribbean or Europe and have someone treat you to Havana Club rum, particularly the fine Cuban Barrel Proof. Trust me, you won’t turn commie, but you will gain an appreciation for the true taste of traditional Cuban rum craftsmanship. Just don’t bring any home - yet!

"Havana Club’s Maestro Don José P. Navarro Campa starts with delicate light, sipping rums aged in extra-old white oak barrels to impart an amber hue and smoothness, then combines them with more complex aged rums. RnD suspect’s it is at this stage the “barrel proof” is also established. The final blend is rested in specially selected finishing casks that breathe new life into the old rum, giving it character and added complexity. According to the distiller, the final product is “bottled straight from the cask.”

Not many rums can be found labelled with Travellers Distillery as their source. Established in 1953, it produces a variety of different liquors, specializing in molasses based rums, mainly supplying independent bottlers. The company gained its name from the success it achieved in serving travellers along the main route to and from Belize City. This edition is from Hunter Laing, better known for their indie whisky selections. Produced in a column still in 2007, just 188 bottles have been released under the Kill Devil label at a massive natural strength of 67.3%. Very limited stocks.

    TRINIDAD

    Bottle
    $1560.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

A molasses based rum from Trinidad Distillers Limited (TDL), labelled as 'Fernandes Distillery', a name that doesn't get seen a lot these days. The reference is a little confusing and information is scant. According to one source, Fernandes was a successful distillery producing up to 85% of Trinidad's rum in the 1960s, before being bought by TDL in 1973. The two distilleries were then combined on one site. This was distilled in 2009, so we can only assume it was produced using the Fernandes equipment. By the way, TDL is the only operational distillery in Trinidad since the closure of Caroni in the early 2000s, so these 'Trinidadians' are not very common. 456 bottles. 46% Alc./Vol.

A handful of the 230 bottle outturn of this cask strength Guyenese beauty have arrived. Produced at the Diamond Distillery via a pot still in 2003 and bottled at 59.9% without added colorants or chill filtration, expect a a big, bold rum.

Lark Rum Island was developed by Ross Dinsmoor early in 2008 as Tasmania's first commercial Rum release in over 160 years. Produced from Queensland molasses, Larks do a slow fermentation for up to 3 weeks and then carefully double distill and finish the rum in a small batch 500lt copper pot still. French Limousin barrels that were used previously for aging port by the Seppeltsfield Winery in Barossa Valley are reassembled into 100 litre barrels to accelerate maturation. Matured for two years or more, it's only bottled “when it tastes right” rather than at a specific age.

Described as "a Scotch-and-cigar lover’s rum." this small cask aged, higher proof bottling (55% Alc./Vol.) is a limited edition. We have less than 10 bottles available.

As the label suggests, French oak maturation is the feature of this agricole-styled rum, which typically contributes more spice. The vessels in question are refurbished and re-toasted Cape red wine casks which hold the spirit for over twelve months. These must be produced in really tiny batches - in this case, just 24 bottles at a whopping 65% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... I wasn’t entirely sure what to make of this.  The minimal ageing toned down the rawness of an unaged spirit in a way that polished off some of the rough edges, so that was good; the additional fruitiness imparted by the Cape Brandy left in the staves (even after the sanding and scraping away of a few millimeters of impregnated wood) was nice – overall, it was a solid, strong drink. This, paradoxically, was also its weakness.  The strength was so great that it overpowered the subtle notes that a mere year-and-a-bit of ageing had provided, and it failed to cohere in a way that would allow the individual taste components to shine more. Here then was a rum that I felt could either use some more ageing, or some water, and indeed I did put a few drops into my drink and it became much more approachable that way. Still, it remained something of an odd duck, hard to pigeonhole, tough to nail down precisely.  It had aspects of an aged agricole, and points that reminded me of a Jamaican high-ester rum, all combined with the dampening anonymity of a column-still, high-proofed, lightly-aged filtered product from, say, Bacardi. - thelonecaner.com

Mhoba Strand 101 South African Rum (700ml)
    SOUTH AFRICA
    $180. 00
    Bottle
    $2160.00 Dozen
    ABV: 50.5%

Another ‘paddock to bottle’ release from a largely unknown South African trail blazer. This time it's a combination of spirits from a single still – one part barrel aged and quite woody, the other part unaged, funky and high in esters. The two were blended with the aim of creating a "slightly off-kilter Smith & Cross Jamaican style" (the blue and gold colours of the label are a homage to the brand). Danish seller and importer, Knud Strand played a key role in determining the ratios in the mix - which is why his name is prominent. This particular release has really put Mhoba on the map in Europe having received high praise from bartenders, pro-rum critics and bloggers alike. As with all Mhobas, there's no added sweetener, flavour or colour and bottling is done without chill-filtration. 50.5% Alc./Vol. - but the ABV will vary from batch to batch.

Other reviews... It’s when you smell and then taste the Strand 101° (58% ABV) rum from South Africa’s Mhoba, that you begin to get an appreciation for what this relative newcomer has accomplished in so short a time. The initial punch is all pot still, all righteous reek, all the time — there’s no holding back and it’s just fascinating to inhale. It smells sharply of paint thinner, nail polish, turpentine and rancid fruit left to go bad in the sun…after a tropical rain, with the steam still coming off the ground. It contains the tartness of a lemon meringue pie mixed up with green apples and gooseberries and a flaky, buttery crust. Sugar cane sap, cider, sour cream, brine, and the rising aromas off a loaf of sourdough bread fresh from the oven.  And over all that is the clear scent of candy floss and bubble gum. I mean, is that a great beginning or what? If I closed my eyes I could hear the Wailers... What’s clear to me is how good the rum really is. Just about everything works here, the strength, the still, the cuts, the assembly, the balance between babyhood and youth, herbals and woods. - thelonecaner.com

...I recall hearing that this might have been made for the cocktail crowd, as there isn’t much high-proof, sugarcane juice-based rum in the market. I definitely see the inspiration from Haus Alpenz’s Smith & Cross in this bottle: beyond the parallel blue and gold embellishment, as it’s high ABV, with a funky profile that works well as both a sipper and mixer. This is something for lovers of dirty distillate like Mortlach, Edradour and Clynelish. The wood influence takes on a mere supporting role, while most of the flavors here come from the blend of distillates. - malt-review.com

Producing since 2015, Mhoba continues to be a genuine hands-on operation. Even the labels are designed and printed on site. Rum boffins describe the spirit as "funky" with similarities to certain 'extreme' Jamaican styles or Rhum Agricoles. The latter would be more accurate, as the rums here are created from fresh Nkomazi cane juice grown at the estate. Distillation takes place using pot stills created by founder, Robert Greaves. This expression is initially aged in large glass bottles that also hold pieces of American oak, cut and charcoal toasted at the distillery. The liquid is then transferred to former South African whisky casks for a second ageing process that compliments the spirit with woody notes of a different kind. 43% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Doug McIvor and Jean-Francois Koenig at Berry Bros are delving beyond whisky and into rum. In the Penny Blue batch series, each edition is estate matured and is, by definition, rare and finite. While there is continuity in overall style to retain the rich complexity that makes this single estate rum a real expression of its Mauritian terroir, each release will come with its own personality. In Batch #007, the Medine Distillery (est 1926) has produced a fresh and balanced molasses-based style with a focus on generous fruits and smoky wood spices. Matured in whisky, sherry and cognac casks and with an outturn limited to 6000 bottles globally, it comes bottled at 41.8% without chill filtration.

Named after the world's rarest stamp, (printed in Mauritius in 1847), the Penny Blue rums are distilled from the molasses of estate-grown sugar canes and matured and bottled at the Medine Estate on Mauritius. Aiming for a new standard in affordable, quality rum, Berry Bros. & Rudd’s Spirit's Specialist, Doug McIvor, together with Jean-Francoise Koenig, Master Distiller at Medine combined their expertise to select rums at their peak maturity. Aged for a minimum of four years in a combination of cognac, whisky and bourbon casks, the VSOP continues the high quality set by the Penny Blue XO, but for a fraction of the price.

Tasting note: Perfect polished brass colour. Can’t fault the nose in its text-book aromas of crème brulee, caramelised fruits, vanilla bean and dried mango. This slips around the tongue while never being overly sweet, then grabs you with a length and style unexpected at the price. Elegant, medium bodied flavours strike a perfect sweet-dry balance. There's light molasses, golden syrup and grilled pineapple notes as well as hints of dried mango through the finish. It's a new benchmark in value for money rum, and better still, non chill filtered. 40% Alc./Vol.

From the pristine lagoons to the lush jungles, Plantation Isle of Fiji is an ode to the beauty of the Fiji Islands. Molasses-based and made using both pot and column stills at the Fiji Distillery, including local Fijian sugar cane, the liquid was first aged in the tropical climate in bourbon casks for three years, then sailed to the southwest of France for twelve months finishing in French oak. Plantation Stiggins' Fancy Smoky Formula Pineapple Rum (700ml)
    Caribbean,
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

The fruit of a third collaboration between Alexandre Gabriel and David Wondrich, the 'Fancy Smoky Formula' is a variation on the original Stiggins’ Fancy Pineapple rum that sees Victoria pineapple rinds infused in Plantation 3 Star, then further distilled in Copper pot stills. A second fruit infusion takes place in Plantation's Original Dark rum for three months. Both the distillate and the fruit infusion are finally blended together. The difference here is that they're finished in casks that previously contained peated single malt whisky (in this case, x-Teeling Blackpitts casks) - hence the smokey accents. The result promises to take your Daiquiris to another level, or any other rum cocktail you’d care to mix it into. If you're wondering, the name is a tribute to the fictional Reverend Stiggins whose favourite drink was “pineapple rum” in the Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Ripe golden pineapple flavors are cheerful and unmistakable from the glass. With balanced sweetness, there is tons of fresh pineapple aroma and flavor without being syrupy. Brown sugar and baking spice notes support this rum that is an overall celebration of tropical fruit. 96 points - Extraordinary, Ultimate Recommendation, 2020 Ultimate Spirits Challenge.

Notes from the producers... A rich and delicious bouquet, accented by smoky notes and aromas of tropical fruit, pineapple, citrus peel, and a touch of clove. The palate opens with a structured, pleasant sensation of ripe banana, pineapple, and spices layered in a smoky finish.

    $120. 00
    Bottle
    $1440.00 Dozen
    ABV: 51.1%
Only 24 casks were made of this one-time-only rum, with a fraction of the outturn making it to Australia. A blend of column still and pot still molasses-based rums distilled in 2011 at the West Indies Rum Distillery (est.1893) on Barbados, it was filled into Bourbon casks and aged on site at Brighton Beach for four and a half years. From there it was shipped to Château de Bonbonnet in France – the home of Cognac masters Maison Ferrand – where it spent another four and a half years in their casks gaining further complexity in the cooler European climate. It was finally bottled as a 9 year old at 51.1% with an ester count of 120 g/hL AA.

Notes from Plantation... It opens with woody and spicy notes with cinnamon, pepper and ginger, then it becomes fruitier with raisins, prune and citrus peel with hazelnut and almond in the background. Palate : Gentle at first and very fruity on raisins and walnut, it then becomes stronger and dryer with tons of chocolate, caramel, vanilla and nutmeg with some dried flowers and cooked fruits and citrus peel building up sip after sip. Finish : Long on prunes, nuts, chocolate and pepper.

The Pierre Ferrand company has had relationships with a number of the Caribbean’s top rum producers for many years via the supply of x-Cognac casks. These are prized by certain distillers for the maturation of their best rums and generally reserved to ‘give style’ to blended rums. Presented with the opportunity to taste the fruits of his trade, Ferrand’s owner/director, Alexandre Gabriel, visited the Caribbean and was blown away. The experience ignited a love affair with Rum and he immediately commenced negotiations to secure his own stocks, launching the Plantation range around 2005.

A key influences in Ferrand’s range of rums continues to be the unique finishing process. When their maturation period in the Caribbean is deemed complete, the rums are transported at natural strength to Chateau du Bonbonnet, the historic Ferrand estate in France and then ‘finished’ for several more months in small French x-Ferrand Cognac barrels. This process was used extensively in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The driving concept behind this collection is essentially one of ‘terroir’ - each aims to express ‘the characteristics and flavour of its place of origin’. One might argue that if there are definite regional differences that contribute to rum styles in the Caribbean, these are largely obscured by the fact that, unlike many other spirits, regulations for the production of rum are minimal. Instead, all sorts of creative departures are permitted making Ferrand’s claim a difficult marketing line to maintain. We recently tasted the Plantation collection for ourselves. While there is indeed a remarkable diversity to be found, there’s also a common house style. Most of the Plantation Rums possess in varying degrees, a remarkable mid palate opulence and buttery texture, balanced by a tannic dryness - a combination that results in flavour profiles one would usually associate with fine wines or brandies. Ignoring the marketing speels, one cannot ignore the fact that these rums demonstrate that carefully selected estate or single-island rums can offer a range of aromas and flavours that compete with the depth and complexity of great Cognac or Whisky.

No doubt one of the key influences is Ferrand’s unique finishing process. Gabriel explains, 'Ninety-nine percent of rums are aged in barrels that once held bourbon. We found that adding an aging process in a French oak cask that once held Cognac adds extra complexity to the rum. This is a practice that was done more commonly in the past but has almost disappeared now. We thought who better than Ferrand, with our knowhow and exceptional casks, to resurrect this ancient technique. It is a very difficult thing to get right, but when done well, it's paradise.' He adds, 'In the Caribbean, Plantation Rums are rare treasures. At Ferrand they become jewels.'

This much anticipated Rum collection has finally arrived in Australia, yours to explore island by island and country by country. Where specified, vintages denote the year of distillation. Stocks are limited. Given the very reasonable price/quality ratio, several vintages are sure to sell out fast. Be quick!

Tasting note: [2001 vintage tasted] Deep burnished brass / copper colour. Perfumed aromatics include mild scents of pine wood, polished leather and a distinct dried banana note. Powerful, off dry palate flavours continue with dried banana and molasses re emerging amongst mildly herbaceous notes - cut grass? Very gentle spirit warmth. Quite like a young Cognac in structure. Exceptionally long aftertaste of dried banana, liquorice strap, molasses and spice. 94 points. 45% Alc./Vol.

    Cognac meets the Caribbean.

The Caribbean is undeniably the epicenter of world Rum production, a fact celebrated by seven artisanal vintage rums and three blends marketed under the ‘Plantation’ label, a new venture from highly commended ‘Cognac Ferrand’, makers of 'Pierre Ferrand Cognac', 'Citadelle Gin' and several other high quality spirits.

Tasting note: Jamaica is well known for its rich, aromatic rums, most of which are produced in pot stills and used extensively for blending. This 8 year old, 100% pot distilled rum exudes both power and sophistication. Gold in colour with a pale straw hue it boasts one of the most powerful noses of the Plantation collection, offering a penetrating amalgam of fried banana, brown sugar, heavy cream, sweet spice and new leather. The concentrated palate flavours mirror the nose with an off dry power wave of dried banana, manuka honey and pine wood accompanied by clean, drying tannin imparting a sense of freshness. Good length. Persistent, warming, delicate aftertaste of dried fruit and pine wood. A stunning rum. 42% Alc./Vol.

Matured nine years in ex-Bourbon casks, with an additional two years in barrels previously containing Cognac from Pierre Ferrand.

Tasting note: (2002 vintage tasted) A 100% column distilled rum matured for 9 years, initially in x-Bourbon casks. Straw gold with a pale straw hue. Almost perfumed aromas of confectionary, very ripe banana, pineapple, vanilla, clove and spearmint. The palate is plush with rich, sweet flavours - over-ripe banana, orange cake and spice notes are counterpointed by a hint of cigar box and cedar. Outstanding length. Soft, creamy mouthfeel and notable here and in several of the Plantation rums is a cedary oak aftertaste which balances the palate beautifully, and provides a sense of elegance. A lingering dried banana fade clinches this bottling as a rum lover's banana smoothy. Superb. 42% Alc./Vol. 95 Points

Tasting note: [2000 Vintage Tasted] Trinidad produces rum via column stills which result in a lighter, more elegant spirit. Aged for ten years, this rum exhibits a deep straw with a pale straw hue. The nose initially offers subtle notes of clove and anise over a delicious buttered shortbread base with some cocoa, menthol and spice notes emerging. Medium to full bodied, the palate unfolds rich creme-caramel counterpointed by slightly drier flavours of shortbread, then spearmint. Spicy, tingly and slightly oily mouthfeel. Excellent length. Finishes long with a honeycomb and cocoa aftertaste and subtle spearmint fade. For lovers of Scotch finger biscuits! 42% Alc./Vol.

Tasting note:  [1998 vintage] Grenada is considered one of the most fertile of the Caribbean islands, where plantations of sugar cane adjoin fruit and spice growers, the latter of which have earnt its world famous reputation as the 'Island of Spice'. This rum was aged for eight years in casks of unspecified origin. Bright, deep gold colour with a pale gold hue. A slightly dusty top note gradually dissipates to reveal subdued aromas of clove, cantaloupe and citrus oils that build with time in the glass. A luscious, rich, round entry fills the mouth, delivering honey, creme caramel and fried banana flavours with a touch of spice. Exceptionally pure, soft, silky mouth feel and perfectly poised, this rum is almost Sauternes like in profile, finishing sweet with a long, creamy, dried banana, creme caramel aftertaste. 42% Alc./Vol.

Tasting note: [2000 vintage tasted] Barbados typically produces light, sweetish rums from both pot and column stills. This blend of both styles was initially matured in Bourbon and Sherry casks. A stunning spirit, the 9 year old Barbados expression represents a benchmark for dark Caribbean Rum. Pale gold with a pale straw hue. Moderately aromatic, the nose releases luxurious scents of coconut cream, nougat, creme caramel, pistachio nuts and cocoa. The aroma profile is reflected on the palate with a soft, silky entry and mouth filling flavours of creme caramel, prunes, roasted banana and peanut satay sauce. Turns dry, with toasty vanillan oak and a distinct mint note following the initial flavour wave, combining a wonderful juxtaposition of sweet and dry with outstanding palate length, finishing long, with a delicate spearmint chocolate aftertaste.Sheer Caribbean class. 95 Points. 42% Alc./Vol.

Tasting note: [2000 vintage tasted] Jamaica is well known for its rich, aromatic rums, most of which are produced in pot stills and used extensively for blending. 95 Points 42% Alc./Vol.

Tasting note: [1998 vintage tasted] Nicaragua is a noteworthy but frequently overlooked Central American producer where a variety of primarily medium-bodied rums from column stills are made, lending themselves well to aging. Barrel aged for 6 years, this rum exhibits a gold colour with a pale gold hue. The nose is introverted. Aromas of brown sugar, liquorice all sorts and dried banana are slowly teased out but remain shy even with time in the glass. The palate is the opposite. Plump, luscious and very approachable, it yields spicy, mouth filling flavours of vanilla sundae, prune and creme brulee with excellent length, before finishing dry with a long, subtle honey, biscuit aftertaste and creamy, honeycomb fade. 42% Alc./Vol.

Tasting note: [2003 vintage tasted] Deep amber gold. Fresh and estery with attractive aromas of dried banana, liquorice bullets and coffee flavoured milk. Rich and well-rounded in the mouth, featuring dates, vanilla, creme brulee and soft spices, drying at the finish and fading with hints of cigar box. A little short. 42% Alc./Vol.

Pyrat (pronounced 'Pirate') is a spirit from the Patron company, creators of super premium tequila. A blend of up to nine unique Caribbean Rums from Anguilla Rums Limited, aged up to 15 years in Limousin oak and American sweet oak barrels. Once aged and blended to perfection, the spirit is poured into individually numbered and hand crafted decanters.

This is a distinctively different rum. Below the vanillin oak there’s a plethora of fruity aromas; orange rind, grapefruit, dried apricot all present and held up by caramel, toffee and cinnamon.

Other reviews... From this dark amber liquid wafts a luxurious aroma of toffee, marzipan, candied fruit and sarsparilla. On the sweeter side of the spectrum, this aged rum is gorgeous and mouth-filling, with caramel and a sprinkling of ginger and cinnamon fireworks on the elongated finish. 40% Alc./Vol.

Ron de Jeremy Reserva Rum (700ml)
    PANAMA
    $74. 99
    Bottle
    $899.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Unashamedly a brand concept spirit that doesn't take itself too seriously is Ron de Jeremy, named after the famed star of hundreds of gentleman's ‘artistic’ films. 'Ron' also means "Rum". The novelty would have worn off long ago if it weren't for the man behind the contents: Cuban Master Distiller, Francisco “Don Pancho” Fernandez, a.k.a "The Godfather". Having developed highly regarded brands including Zafra, Ron Abuelo and Havana Club, his input guarantees that substance hasn't been placed second to style when it comes to what goes inside the bottle. Molasses-based (the sugar cane is estate grown) and distilled in both pot and column stills at Alcoholes y Rones de Panama in South Central Panama, maturation takes place in ex-bourbon barrels for up to eight years.

If you're looking for a quality house rum with a profile that typifies the lighter side of the Caribbean, as well as a silky texture and body enough for mixing, this ticks all those boxes. In short, it's considerably better than you'd expect for a celebrity-affiliated spirit.

Tasting note: Bright gold colour / shows good cling. Nicely scented with soft, semi-sweet notes of cream sponge cake, mocha, a touch of raw sugar and white pepper. Relaxed and creamy on entry, builds with good concentration into a semi-sweet, dried banana, vanilla wafer and clove profile with a very soft, whitepepper overlay. Finish sees an interesting grassy / elderflower-like note enter adding freshness. Concludes balanced, delicate and dry with moderate persistence and lingering banana cake in the fade. A satisfying, light'n'easy house pour rum for all applications. 40% Alc./Vol.

Latin for coconut, Cocos Nucifera is the second edition from the Rum Diary Spiced Experimental Kitchen. Elise Goodwin, winner of the 'Of All Things Tiki, Land & Sea' cocktail competition, received the opportunity to work with Rum Diary Spiced to create her own small-batch spiced rum. "I wanted to create something different and fun - and I love coconuts" said Elise. So they set off to create an authentic, dry, white coconut spiced rum.

They used activated charcoal to remove the colour from the rum, blended three different coconut macerations with cacao nibs and Australian native wattleseed to compliment and lift the coconut profile. The final product is a wonderful toasted coconut rum like no other. 42% Alc./Vol.

    JAMAICA
    $64. 99
    Bottle
    $779.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

A blend of pot still rums aged for a minimum of four years in x-Jack Daniels barrels. The 100% tropical maturation gives it an 'already mature' character. It's another all-natural rum from Worthy Park with absolutely nothing added. Recommended in Rum Manhattans and Kingston Negronis.

Other reviews... As a sipping rum the this offers quite a nice experience. It’s very full flavoured and quite strong initally on the alcohol. Once again, the rum just needs a little time. After a couple of sips the alcohol begins to mellow and you will notice a sweet vanilla custard and some nice almost creamy fudge like notes. My initial assessment was that Rum-Bar Gold is closer to Hampden Gold than Appleton V/X but I’m starting to feel that despite all the upfront Jamaican funk rum it displays an underlying sweetness which neither of the other rums can attain. The rums in this blend are not high ester rums. The finish is quite long lasting and surprisingly mellow. That’s not to say this is a sweet rum in the sense of Zacapa or Diplomatico! It is a Jamaican pot still rum – no added sugar or other additives. However, it will be for many far more accessible than Smith & Cross, Hampden Gold or a Monymusk offering... Rum Bar Gold offers an experience much different to the other Jamaican Rums on the market. It is for a fairly young rum, quite complex and I certainly hope that people take the plunge and try a bottle whilst Tesco have stocks as I think they will be very pleasantly surprised. Excellent stuff...
    4 Stars - thefatrumpirate.com

..."The Gold presents a medium straw color in the glass. The nose is surprisingly subtle for a pot-still Jamaican rum. In time, it yields vanilla and stone fruits, like a fruit pastry. Taste-wise, the vanilla and barrel-wood spring forth, with little of the ripe banana hogo found in some Jamaican rums. The mouthfeel is very clean, with no hint of additives. It finishes dry, with the barest hint of honey. It will work well as a rum substitute in cocktail recipes calling for a similar 80-proof bourbon."

The sibling to the fabulous 1796 standard edition, hailing from the Aragua valley near the capital Caracas. Aged for up to five years, well beyond Venezuela's minimum norm for the Rum classification, this sleek, light to medium bodied style offers raw sugar, molasses and hints of mixed peel on the nose, and a sweet, well-balanced, low-burn, somewhat pedestrian delivery; Cinnamon warmth mingles with dried banana and molasses cake, the finish rounds off in a flurry of all-spice, white pepper and subtle caney freshness (likely from a column still component). Sits comfortably alongside the best value easy-drinkers and cocktail rums in its category. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The aroma after the pour is lightly spicy and delicately brown sugar-like; air contact stirs deeper scents of molasses, dark caramel and lead/minerals. The palate entry is sugar sweet; at midpalate there's a taste rush to marshmallow, confectioner's sugar, oaky vanilla and light honey. Finishes gracefully, with lip-smacking tastes of bittersweet brown sugar and honey. Best Buy.

This product contains some minor scuffing and bruising to the gift box. There may some small traces of sediment present, these do not affect the quality.

St Lucia Distillers are the makers of highly acclaimed rums such as Chairman's Reserve and Elements 8.
This 3rd Edition under the 1931 label was released to commemorate 82 years of the Dennery distillery in the Mabouya Valley (Dennery eventually merged in 1972 to become the St. Lucia Distillers).

It's a blend of rums from Pot Still and Coffey Stills (double column). For this bottling, there's less detailed information regarding its composition than previous releases, however it's reportedly been aged between 6 to 12 years and a small amount of sugar has been added to 'finish it'. If you think this is strange for a rum, keep in mind that the Venuezalean classic, Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva also has some 'sugar honey' added before bottling. Although it makes for a more liqueured expression, it's also one of our biggest selling rums. 43% Alc./Vol.
