    GUYANA
    $499. 00
    Bottle
    $5988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 49.9%

'ICBU' was the marque used to identify rums from the Dutch owned Uitvulgt Distillery. While Uitvlugt continues to operate as a sugar refinery and producer of molasses, the equipment used for rum production reportedly ceased operation in 2000 and was moved to the El Dorado Distillery. Not surprisingly, Uitvulgt's have become quite collectible.

In this instance, the “MPM” moniker appears to be a Cadenhead convention, and probably stands for "Main Port Mourant" or some similar variation – conveying that the rum is from an Uitvlugt pot still. Cadenhead's release is from a single barrel, filled in October 1993, matured in Campbeltown, Scotland and emptied in early 2019 with an outturn of 204 bottles. It's a non chill filtered / all natural rum.

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Grassy; haylofts and very oily. Hints of varnish, raisins, dried orange peel and marzipan. Palate: big rum, some ginger powder, kiwi fruits, brown bread toast with salted butter. Lychee, popping candy and lemon juice. Finish: Faint tropical fruits give way to more grassy, herbal notes. 49.9% Alc./Vol.

The spirit is a mix of pot and column still styles. In Cadenhead's words expect, "a definite Jamaican influence with hints of diesel, burnt olive oil, chocolate orange cake and waxiness." 50% Alc./Vol.

Palate: Very creamy, roasted sweet potato sprinkled with nutmeg. Finish: Very moreish. Smooth elegant lingering creaminess with faint spice." 62% Alc./Vol.

    HAITI
    $130. 00
    Bottle
    $1560.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%
One of a handful of rums we've been able to source from Haiti. Influenced by the French agricole tradition, this lighter coloured style is still big on flavour. All ex bourbon oak matured, it's almost certain Cadenhead's sourced it from that very famous distillery, Barbancourt.

Notes from the bottler... Nose: Minty sweet notes along with a lively hit of eucalyptus at first but this is soon tempered by a rich sweet fruity note. Palate: Sweet and very rich to start, some tropical fruits and all spice mingle with a rich oily middle palate of soft peaches and honey. Clean soft fruity finish, summer on the beach comes to mind as this well balanced rum finishes its dance across the palate. 46% Alc./Vol.

1991 Cadenheads TMAH Trinidad Distillers 25 Year Old Cask Strength Trinidad Rum (700ml)
    TRINIDAD
    $350. 00
    Bottle
    $4200.00 Dozen
    ABV: 64.3%
Craft-indie bottler, Cadenheads offer another atomic-strength rum packaged as part of their 175th Anniversary Collection (each bottle also has a little commemorative metal hang tag). The rum was sourced from Trinidad Distillers, a large operation established in the 1940s. When Angostura's founders arrived in Trinidad they initially out-sourced rums to make their world famous bitters. However the son of the founder, Don Carlos, always intended to create his own rum. It wasn't until 1947 that the great grandson of the founder, Robert Siegert (with Mr Gomez and Thomas Gatcliffe) built the first distillery in Port of Spain. Boasting seven column stills, TD today produces over 18 million litres annually, mostly for export. The Lone Caner rum blog reports "...most of the molasses they work with originates outside of Trinidad – in Guyana, Panama and the Dominican Republic. In any event, Angostura as a company has little to do with it."

Laid into cask in 1991 this exceptionally old expression arrives at a remarkable natural strength of 64.3% Alc./Vol. (The meaning behind the designation "TMAH" on the label is not stated). Non chill filtered. Very limited stocks.

Other reviews... A rum like Cadenhead’s 21 year old is a curious beast. Dissecting its profile and coming up with tasting notes is not like having the elements line up and present themselves one after another, like some kind of surreal audition or a debutante’s ball... I had been softened by several forty percenters, sampled prior to cracking this one, and was consequently somewhat unprepared for the force with which the TMAH assaulted my beak (it was sharp and deep, and should absolutely be left to stand for a while before nosing). I could barely discern any molasses background at all, in between furiously swirling notes of rye bread, salt biscuits and salt butter. Not much caramel here. But patience, patience – it did get better. After opening up, it smoothened out a good bit and simply became an intense drink rather than a skewering one – and one could gradually tease out thin threads of honey and nougat, and sweeter notes of vanilla, cherries…and a little spicy note of marzipan. That didn’t soften the arrival, of course. It was a little less than medium bodied, this rum – even thin, which I didn’t care for – and it detonated with a hurricane force level of taste, scattering shrapnel of sweet and salt in all directions. Dates and figs came to mind, more crackers, a sharp aged cheddar (but not as creamy). Adding water helped here: almonds, nutmeg and slivers of dried fruit emerged, but slowly, thinly, as if terrified of being bludgeoned to death by the alcohol. “Chewy” would not describe the experience exactly, but it comes close. Appropriately enough for such a full proof glass of high-test, the finish was enormously long, a sarissa of lingering flavours of nutmeg and vanilla and light sharp red fruit (pomegranates?). Cask strength, overproof, full proof or whatever – it was certainly a rum that demanded attention... the encounter as a whole is quite something. And, it must be conceded, occasionally painful. - thelonecaner.com
Cane Island Secret Distillery 12 Year Old Single Estate Nicaragua Rum (700ml)
    NICARAGUA
    $110. 00
    Bottle
    $1320.00 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

The second release from Cane Island ups the ante with an award winning, twelve year old single estate rum from Central America. This is a column distilled expression that is 100% tropically aged – but with a twist…it was not actually aged in Nicaragua. Although the distillery is listed as ‘Secret’ on the bottle, you can take it from us that the spirit is from Compañía Licorera de Nicaragua (CLN), located in the Nicaraguan capitol of Managua. If you’ve heard of that distillery before, it’s no wonder. They produce a little brand called ‘Flor de Cana‘ there as well! This expression won a Gold medal at the Tokyo Whisky & Spirits Competition in June 2022. Produced from molasses derived from CLN’s own cane plantations in the Chichigalpa, after a relatively short fermentation of 24-36 hours, the wash was distilled using a five-column still where heavy rum is taken from the first column at 75% abv and light rum is taken from the fifth column at 95% abv. The CLN marques are normally blended together and proofed down to 70% abv before aging. It was then matured for 12 years in ex-bourbon barrels. This result has a very rich mouthfeel, delivering what you'd expect from an honest 12 year old. 43% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the importers... Nose: Lightly funky tropical fruit salad, unburnt tobacco, vanilla and biscuit spices plus a nice orange zest as well with vanilla paste there too. Palate: More of those tropical fruits – banana, pawpaw and even some lychee there, the tobacco notes continue on the palate as well, plus a nice vanilla note to round it all off. Finish: A lovely, sweet and satisfying finish with chocolate and coffee note alongside more of that delicious fruitiness and a jaffa choc-orange makes itself known as it fades. A very easy (almost dangerously so) drinking rum that will disappear quickly on a table with friends. Big and rich with masses of fruit and chocolate notes, as well as a pleasant unburnt tobacco backbone. The touch of orange really lifts this one to something special. Complex and with lots to chat about in the flavour profile, sip this one neat – or at most a cube or two of ice.

Cane Island Trinidad Distillers 8 Year Old Single Estate Trinidad Rum (700ml)
    TRINIDAD
    $110. 00
    Bottle
    $1320.00 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

Cane Island is associated with Infinity Spirits, a developer and supplier of rum brands based in the Netherlands. The company has been buying, blending and bottling rums from around the world for around ten years. The Trinidad 8 year old is part of their ‘Single Estate Series’, sourced from Trinidad Distillers Limited (TDL). If you haven’t heard of TDL, it’s much, much more commonly known as Angostura Distillery, which we bet you have heard of. The molasses used is sourced from outside the country as the last sugar refinery in Trinidad and Tobago closed down in 2007. It's now shipped in from Guyana, the Dominican Republic and Fiji.  Fermented for between 48-56 hours using their own proprietary yeast strain, the rum is put through TDL’s five-column still with heavy spirit being tapped at around 80% ABV from the first column. A much lighter spirit is tapped from the fifth, while several medium-bodied spirits are taken from other points on the stills and used for blending. All are aged separately in ex-bourbon (Jack Daniels & Four Roses) casks before bottling. Cane Island are quite open about sugar and colour – they add around 10g/l of sugar and may use E150 (caramel) to colour their rums for consistency. We applaud their transparency!

Notes from the importers... Nose: Mashed banana, stone fruit , stewed apple and pastry – like bakery apple slice. Palate: Lovely visocus mouthfeel – coats the whole palate instantly. Sweet tinned prunes with chocolate notes, salted caramel, liquorice, coffee and vanilla custard. Finish: Sweet and easy with a nice mild pepper to offset. The fruit and spice notes really last and that slight pepper walks with them the whole way. This is a truly easy going and most sippable rum.  Whilst sweetened – it’s not overly sweet, and the pepper really offsets that nicely.  A very approachable rum that won’t scare  a ‘newbie’ with new and unfamiliar notes, but with enough complexity and great balance to satisfy a season rum drinker. 43% Alc./Vol.

1996 Caroni 23 Year Old 'Tasting Gang' Full Proof Blended Trinidad Rum (700ml)
    TRINIDAD
    $599. 00
    Bottle
    $7188.00 Dozen
    ABV: 63.5%
Carribbean rum doesn't come much rarer or more collectable than Caroni. Various bottlers have secured casks over the years and the last remaining stocks are slowly being released. This edition was composed by a team of twenty three European Caroni enthusiasts who met in Cognac - hence the sub title: "Tasting Gang". After sampling 173 barrels, they settled on a blend of 22 casks. All the rums selected were distilled in 1996 and matured on Trinidad before being moved to Guyana where they remained in situ until 2019 losing 85% of the liquid to evaporation. This extraordinary collaborative effort was incrementally released by Luca Gargano of Velier. Based in Genoa, Gargano has a reputation for uncovering the world’s finest (and most obscure) rums. This represents the 38th and second last edition. 5083 bottles are on offer world wide. Australia has received a tiny allocation. Once these are gone, they're gone forever.

The Caroni Estate Distillery (est. 1918), closed in 2003 and is now sadly, demolished. It was built on the site of an old sugar factory and for a period supplied rums to the British Navy. At the time, there were some eight to ten other sugar factories operating, each producing different types (and qualities) of rums, bought up by merchants and sold to rum shops all over the island.

Caroni gradually increased the quality of its distilling process, moving on from its original cast iron still to a wooden coffey still, until 1945 when they acquired a copper still which was followed by a single column in 1957 and then a four column Gerb Herman still in 1980. Rums from the estate gained a reputation for being particularly flavoursome.

1996 Caroni 23 Year Old 'The Last' Full Proof Heavy Trinidad Rum (700ml)
    TRINIDAD
    $650. 00
    Bottle
    $7800.00 Dozen
    ABV: 61.9%
In 2004, professional rum chaser Luca Gargano discovered a warehouse filled with barrels of Caroni's legendary heavy-ester rum. Since then, the last remaining stocks have been slowly released to global markets. This 39th bottling marks the culmination of Gargano's series, and the final Caroni from Velier. Distilled in 1996 and aged in Trinidad until 2008, then at Demerara Distillers Ltd in Guyana until 2019, the end compostion was made up from 24 barrels. 5522 bottles are on offer world wide. Australia has received a tiny allocation. Once these are gone, they're gone forever.

Established on the site of the sugar factory for which it was named, Caroni was famously a key ingredient of British Navy rations. Its famous 'Heavy' rums help to make up the signature flavour. Sadly, with the decline of the local sugar industry, distillers became more dependent upon imported molasses, making distilling less economical. In 2001 the Trinidadian government sold a 49% share in the holding company to Angostura, then in 2003 Caroni was finally closed forever. 61.9% Alc./Vol.

    TRINIDAD
    $189. 99
    Bottle
    $2279.88 Dozen

Tasting note: Brilliant brassy gold colour. Reticent at first, with shellac dominant; coaxing the aromas teases out ever-richer inhalations of dried banana, orange cake, brown sugar and cocoa; allow this 5 minutes to wake up. Fabulous purity with a gently bittersweet entry following through to a silky, rich and vibrant mid palate with dried banana, golden syrup and cocoa flavours and a peppery, grassy, fresh, energetic finish. Balance and staying power is one of the hallmarks of Caroni's full strength expressions. This bottling doesn't disappoint. 52% Alc./Vol.

On offer is a tiny allocation of extra aged, high proof rum from this long closed Trinidad distillery.

While the Caribbean has a long history of rum, a significant part of this history has been irretrievably lost. Trinidad once boasted more than 50 distilleries. The number dwindled to eight by the 1950s and now only Angostura remains. The decline was mostly due to the demise of the local sugar industry (Trinidad now imports molasses for rum production).

This increasingly rare bottling represents a small part of that era.

After the 2003 closure, some Caroni casks made their way back to the U.K. We're pleased to be able to offer an allocation of what is unquestionably a true collector's and connoisseur's delight. Once these are gone, they're gone forever. This bottling, distilled in 1998 was matured for 15 years on the island with a loss of around 80% to evaporation. It was finally bottled in Scotland in 2015. We have secured a very small allocation.

Tasting note: Deep brassy gold. Mild shellac blows off to reveal luxurious aromas of dried banana / mango, vanilla bean and milk chocolate. 2-3 minutes in the glass emphasises honey cornflake crackles, with hints of boiled confectionary and cut grass-like freshness. Concentrated, medium sweet delivery; Entry is lean and oak driven, filling out with a creamy vanilla, sponge cake and raw sugar profile; concludes delicately bittersweet, tingly, peppery with raw sugar and dried banana reverberating in the aftertaste. Deceptively long. A rare treat indeed! 55% Alc./Vol.

Tasting note: Polished copper. Wafts of alcohol give way to profound aromas of vanilla bean, raw sugar, molasses and sticky date. The massive attack manages to balance all of the above in a slow-motion cascade, the sugars weaving in and out of the encroaching oak in a sustained, bittersweet sensation. Another side of Caroni, demonstrating just how well its rums can age. 57.18% Alc./Vol.

    MAURITIUS
    $165. 00
    Bottle
    $1980.00 Dozen
    ABV: 42%
Mauritian rums are slowly making their way to our shores. This one's from a single cask yielding 455 bottles at 43% Alc./Vol. The distillery is not disclosed.

Located off the coast of Madagascar, the island of Mauritius is a relative newcomer to the global rum scene. Sugar cane was introduced from Java during the Dutch period (1598-1710), mainly to produce an alcoholic drink. During his service in the 18th century, the French Governor, Bertrand-François Mahé de Labourdonnais, was the first to support the development of the rum industry in Mauritius. From 1810, the country became a British colony and gradually transformed itself into a plantation economy with sugarcane as the primary crop. Later, in 1852, Dr Pierre Charles François Harel saw opportunities to create quality rums on the island. Today, it's home to six distilleries and remains one of the few countries to offer both Traditional and Agricultural style rums, dark, light and spiced, the latter usually infused with the island's abundant local crops of spices and coffee.

Tasting note: Sourced from Trinidad Distillers Limited. Here's an arresting rum bouquet; reticent at first, but builds in an astonishing, eye-watering development of feijoa, peach, elderflower and papaya-like aromas. Air time adds hints of plantain, crushed pine buds and rock’n’rye liqueur. Fabulous bitter-sweet attack is intense, resiny and piney with a crisp alcohol bite. Mid palate showcases a Trinidadian bomb: fresh-yet-fruity with peach and feijoa tart, elderflower and estery green grassy notes. Plantain and bitter dark chocolate round off a raw and punchy combination of unadulterated fruit, heat and tropical intensity. Wow! Non chill filtered. 63.5% Alc./Vol.

As part of a five year celebration of the Anniversary of Compagnie des Indies, the team wanted to showcase their blending skills with a very special limited edition of 500 bottles. The concept was to marry two of the company's most prized casks. The result combines three different components: Firstly, a Guadeloupean rum distilled in 1973, which makes up 72.2%. The second portion is a Guyanese rum made from three unusual stills; Savalle from the Diamond distillery and Enmore and Port Mourant from Uitvlugt distillery. A Jamaican portion of pot still rum in the Wedderburn style was sourced from an undisclosed distillery. Both the Guyanese and Jamaican rums were distilled in 1993. The final blend was aged in an ex rum cask. Comes beautifully presented in a solid oak case and wax sealed bottle. One bottle available. 46% Alc./Vol.

This superb rum was matured for 10 years in x Bourbon barrels then bottled in 2011.

Tasting note: Attractive deep gold ochre appearance. Varnish in the opening sniff blows off to reveal gorgeous and pure scents of buttered toast, sweet tobacco, old books and vanillin oak; several minutes of air contact releases chocolate covered cherries, old leather and dilute maple syrup. Final inspection finds creamy soda alongside hints of dried grass. Outstanding aromatic complexity. Fuller and richer than Damoiseau’s younger bottlings, yet with no compromise on the freshness or purity, it features nougat and dried banana flavours infused through a mildly grassy base note, all brilliantly balanced with restrained sugars and banana peel returning late into the aftertaste. Buy this terrific effort for the nose alone. Bravo! 42% Alc./Vol.

Rhum Agricole: Grown, not manufactured - the purest expression of rum on earth.

As one of the last "hidden gems" in the world of spirits, this is a product faraway from the marketing ploys and bill boards of multinational brands.
Not easily come by and even less widely known, although that's changing fast, it's represented by a handful of traditionalists who persist with free run sugarcane juice ("vin de canne", or 'sugarcane wine' as the French call it), rather than the way 99% of rum is made - from a waste product of sugar manufacturing we know as molasses. Agricole rums tend to be drier, more complex and diverse in flavour, rather than exuding overt sweetness, typified by subtle grassy / cane-like overtones and fresh, elegant profiles.

Ben Jones, North American regional director and spokesman for Martinique-based Rhum Clement, explains. “It’s a very dry and earthy, vegetal flavor profile, very different from the sort of medium-sweet, heavier, stickier profile that you get with the molasses foundation,” says Jones. “Fresh-pressed sugar cane juice is dry, not sweet. What makes molasses sweet is reducing it to super-concentrated sugar used for alcohol. Actual sugar, while it’s sweet, is not as sweet as people would perceive. It’s fruity and grassy, and the distillate of rhum agricole is really, truly the cleanest form of that distillate. The pun is horrible, but it’s like grass to glass.”

You could consider Agricoles as the Caribbean’s equivalent to Bordeaux, not only because they taste more "European", but because Rum Agricole is the only rum to be governed by an AOC (Appellation d’Origine Controllee, the French official label of origin). Just as with French wine and food, this AOC dictates how the spirit can be made, including the mandate to harvest sugar cane only in the dry season, the prevention of burning of the cane fields and a requirement to press sugar cane into cane juice within three days of harvest.

Smaller scale production combined with these regulations makes for a winemaker's approach to rum. As they usually manage their own plantations, agricole distillers can harvest at the optimum time, rather than rely on the whim of private growers. They can also crush and begin fermentation immediately (sometimes with indigenous yeasts), a key factor in the category's style. Put simply, these rums taste fresher, not only for what they're made from, but because they are.

Because agricole's distinctive and diverse characteristics make even entry level expressions of considerable interest, cocktail geeks in the U.S. have been hooked on them for some time. Cask strength, vintage dated and ultra-aged bottlings are frequently nothing short of extraordinary, drawing comparisons with the very best Cognacs or Whiskies on the planet.

The total production of Rum Agricole combined make up about 1% of the Caribbean's total rum output, yet their influence is disproportionate. If you ignore the cynical trend towards luxury rums and super premium soleras, it's the agricoles that have injected added excitement into a category that was, six or seven years ago, wavering with a monotony of styles and mass marketed brands.

Clement and Rhum J.M. have become the most sought after names of Martinique. A little further north, the gold standard is Damoiseau - presently the only rum producer on the eastern side of Guadeloupe's Butterfly islands. Their Bellevue au Moule Estate and distillery was established at the end of the 19th century by Mr.Rimbaud from Martinique. Roger Damoiseau senior acquired the site in 1942 and since then it has remained within the Damoiseau family. Some of the cane processed here is still cut by hand from the surrounding fields, just as it has been for centuries. The rest is trucked in from all over the island.

Damoiseau employs a single, copper and stainless steel column still. Stainless steel is used in the lower sections of the column to help reduce the maintenance associated with a copper column, while the copper top reduces the presence of sulphur compounds formed during fermentation. These can contribute the 'off' flavours familiar to some whiskies, in particular, rubbery, struck match-like characteristics.

For those planning a holiday to the region, the Damoiseau distillery also remains a popular tourist destination. Current proprietors, Jean Luc and Evre Damoiseau endeavour to make a memorable experience for everyone who takes the time to visit.

All rums on offer have been matured for a minimum of three years in 180 litre x-bourbon casks. This is a rare opportunity to take advantage of some unique rum experiences while extending your support to the plight of cane workers and artisans as opposed to the standardised sway of mega-farms, industrial scale stills and ad men. It's a win-win scenario that makes for a refreshing change.

Tasting note: Impresses from the outset with its formidable mahogany / sienna brown colour. Opens with deep yet understated tones redolent of top notch oloroso sherry that once past the initial stage of air contact develop big-time taking on molasses, vanilla, rich fruit cake, marzipan, cherry pipe tobacco, old liquorice strap and more. A terrific rum bouquet. A creamy, soft entry crescendos into a bitter sweet yet impeccably balanced, gently warming profile featuring roasted nuts, vanilla, fruit cake and liquorice strap ending pleasantly woody, gently bittersweet with hints of unripe banana, liquorice bullets and almond cake mingling in the long spicy fade. Sensational! 54.4 Alc./Vol.

The palate delivers a compelling grassy/cane-like profile that’s counterpointed by restrained sugars with the finish fantastically cane-like, fresh and vibrant with butter menthol lozenge rounding off a beautiful balancing act. Dead Reckoning Mhoba Pure Single French Oak Cask Strength South African Rum (700ml)
    SOUTH AFRICA
    $180. 00
    Bottle
    $2160.00 Dozen
    ABV: 56%

Adelaide-based independent bottler, Justin Boseley, continues his project of importing unusual and hard-to-find rums with this South African addition from Mhoba. At 29 months old, this is a fairly young rum by Dead Reckoning standards. Its first two years were spent in a South African red wine cask from the Vrede em Lust estate in the Franschhoek valley, and it was initially expected to be around eighteen months to two years in a finishing cask, but Justin was surprised at how active his barrel was - so active, in fact, that he elected to bottle it after just five months finishing.

Justin describes finding this selection in Mhoba’s bond-store as an ‘A-HA!’ moment. "Upon tasting Mhoba rum for the first time this was a revelation and also a rewriting of the rum flavour profile rule book." He adds, "It reminded me of the first time I tried a Jamaican Hampden. I hand selected this individual single barrel release... It’s time in the red wine cask has given it layers of flavour, including crisp red apples and cranberry juice. A heavy level char bourbon cask used for the finishing in Adelaide has added the perfect amount of vanilla, custard and caramel." Bottled in December 2022 without filtration at 56% and with nothing added, 377 bottles are on offer.

    FIJI

    Bottle
    $2388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 65%

A follow up release from Adelaide-based independent bottler Justin Boseley, Dead Reckoning is a massive single barrel bombshell. Sourced from the South Pacific Rum Distillery in Fiji, get past the initial wafts of alcohol and the nose takes on a strong Jamaican slant - funky and fruity, reminiscent of high ester Hampden (albeit a slightly less integrated version); Papaya, grilled pineapple, plantain, dried mango, new leather and liquorice bullets are echoed in a powerful, bittersweet attack. Add to that fruity dark chocolate, tongue-tingling alcohol and an aftertaste that unfolds with molasses cake, golden syrup, pineapple pudding and finishes with a superb fruity rebound. All tropically aged, 100% Pot distilled and disgorged at 65%, you get what the label says. Given the age, provenance and all-natural character, this is a bargain for rum purists. Named after the infamous 'mutiny on the Bounty', 285 bottles are on offer for Australia only. Non chill-filtered.

Other reviews... Nose: Funky Banana and tropical fruit salad, biscuit spices and some clove notes as well as a definite floral (frangipani?) presence in the mix there as well. Palate: The pot still origin of this rum is quite evident by the lovely oily mouthfeel it exhibits. A lot more delicate flavours apparent here than I was expecting too – much tropical fruit – but also fresh granny smith apple notes. Lovely biscuit spice flavours as well as vanilla, ginger and mixed peel. The high alcohol content is extremely well integrated with little burn or harshness (especially so considering the abv). What you do get, however, is a massive flavour hit and esters by the pound – man this is delicious! Finish: The absolute definition of a chewy finish on this one. Big, funky, tropical fruit salad but the sticky sweetness is tempered by the dry tannins from the 21 years in wood. Luxurious and constantly evolving, and so, so long – it stretches all the way to the moon and back … in fat, that’s the exact amount I love this rum!! The Mutiny – South Pacific 21yo is an absolutely massive rum. At 65% ABV that’s no big surprise – but what does catch you (well… me) off-guard is just how incredibly easy it is to sip on. It’s not harsh or hot or rough on the palate – but be warned… the high alcohol content is incredibly well integrated but have no doubt about it – the 65%ABV will smite you hard if you forget just what you’re dealing with! 4.5 stars - thefatrumpirate.com

Dictador 2 Masters Hardy Summer Blend 1976 and 1978 Rum (700ml)
    COLOMBIA
    $999. 00
    Bottle
    $11988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 41.1%

For this super premium bottling, Dictador blur the lines between spirits categories, initially marrying two single casks of sugar cane juice distillate from 1976 and 1978, followed by a finishing in Sherry casks. The blend was then shipped to Hardy in Cognac, France where the rum was further blended and finished by Mikeal Bouilly. The Cellar Master used a Chauffe légère 350 liter oak cask from 1954 for the process which lasted approximately seven months. Due to the taste profile it was labelled as ÉTÉ which means 'Summer'. Fast sold out at the distillery, the final rum is between 39-41 years old with just 360 bottles on offer world wide. Comes beautifully presented.

Notes from the producers... Nose: Immediate vanilla, fudge and butterscotch, but a character reminiscent of a great Cognac as well with some dried figs and apricots, then pencil shavings and hints of damp earth. Very complex. Palate: This heady tipple coats the palate with an impressive array of flavonoids including an overlay of nutmeg on milk chocolate, toffee, sea-salt caramel and a beautiful softness without the sweetness, a great marriage. There is a rise on the mid-palate before it fades slowly into a minute-long supple and silky finish that is pierced only by flashes of oak, pure rum character and raisins. 41.1% Alc./Vol.

Dictador is produced in Colombia on the Caribbean coast at Cartagena de Indias city. The "Best of" expressions are small batch runs exemplifying the finest and oldest barrels in Dictador's warehouses. Selections are made from an immense collection of barrels, some of which have been maturing since the opening of the distillery in 1913. It ranks as one of the most significant stocks of rare rums in the world today.

The liquids for these old vintages are carefully chosen by Master Distiller, Hernan Parra for their deep, luxurious qualities. Each sees a slight twist on maturation. For the 'Altisimo' release, Dictador have employed barrels with the unique signature of Scotch whisky, aiming to bring the fragrance and tastes of floral malt, peat smoke, minerals and peel into one majestic blend. Like all of Dictador's rums, this is distilled from sugar cane honey (a concentrated version of sugarcane juice) rather than molasses. Sugar cane honey is essentially filtered and partially evaporated sugar cane juice. It’s thicker, keeps longer than fresh juice and is less 'processed' than molasses. It also tends to be more flavoursome. These are all natural rums with zero colouring and no added sugar. With just 300 bottles of the 'Best of 1987' on offer worldwide, our allocation is next to nothing. 45% Alc./Vol.

    COLOMBIA

Considered by many rum enthusiasts to be one of the highlights in Dictador's portfolio, 'Insolent' employs pre-used barrels including a significant percentage of oak from Jerez, Spain, as well as barrels that previously contained Port wine. Towards the end of the aging process, earmarked barrels are emptied and subjected to an open flame process which 'caramelizes' the rum soaked staves on the interior. These barrels are then refilled with the same rum allowing the spirit to integrate the sweet caramelized flavours. The final rum is blended to showcase a range of exquisite notes including fudge, vanilla, parfait caramel and Colombian coffee.

Other reviews... This is a medium bodied rum which leaves the palate sweetened with yummy butter pecan and butterscotch toffee while at the same time heating it with glowing coals of cinnamon and oak spice. VENEZUELA

    $3000.00 Dozen
    ABV: 43%
Following the superlative 2000 (ranked as one of the finest rums we've tasted to date) comes the latest instalment in Diplomatico's Single Vintage series, a culmination of Nelson Hernández's vision to create a statement from every standout season: When conditions in the field concentrate the sugars in the cane, it favours the production of the very finest grades of rum. 2004 was another remarkable vintage, also yielding one of the lowest allocations on record.

Like Diplomatico's $300 flagship, this is a 100% pot still effort with a maturation reserved for luxury bottlings, less the prohibitive mark up of the luxury market. Following twelve years in x Bourbon barrels, it was finished for twelve months in x-oloroso Spanish sherry casks. Presented in a reverse tapered, heavy set base bottle with the cork inset into a weighty high quality metal stopper, the result is made to impress from the inside out.

Tasting note: First impressions don't count for much in this superb rum that demands extended breathing. Tasted over several days, it continued to build richness and complexity, much like an older sherry matured whisky. As with previous vintages, this beams like polished mahogany. Initially shy, ample air contact releases heady aromas of crème caramel, old muscat, dates, dilute maple syrup and baklava, as well as drier notes of peppercorn and cedar. Medium bodied, yet densely packed with flavours of molasses, café-cremes, milk chocolate and liquorice bullets, balanced by delicate astringency and a burst of cinnamon warmth. The finish injects a second rush of sugars, leaving a residue of banana cake and a medley of dried fruits. Style wise, this takes a slightly different trajectory to the 2000 and 2002, retaining all the complexity and nuance you'd expect, while showing more restraint, oak and spice as well as serious staying power; it's in a league that resembles great brandies. The rewards are in patience. 43% Alc./Vol.

Few people will be aware that as well as being home to the famous rum based medicinal bitters, Angostura, Venezuela makes a number of well-respected barrel-aged golden and dark Rums. Local producers say the combination of tropical humidity and cool winds that bathe Venezuela's sugar-cane fields helps to age the rum faster than in other countries. As José Mandry, president of the Venezuelan Alcohols Chamber that groups most of the country's rum makers says, 'Venezuela is a blessed land situated at the north of South America where the winds don't tear us up but gently rock us, and gently rock our rums.' The change in temperature from day to night stimulates interaction between the alcohol distilled from cane juice and the barrels, enhancing the taste.

This bottling is the ideal starting point for your experiences with Diplomatico, or even Rum in general. The majority (95%) input from lighter, column still rums and the average of four years in barrel translates into a lighter profile that's as versatile as it is accessible.

Tasting notes: Very pale straw colour with water like hue. Slightly restrained, drier styled aromatics offer a top note of vanilla bean above iced coffee with malted milk, honey, a whiff of coconut oil, a sprinkling of cinnamon and a subtle grassy undertone adding freshness. Soft creamy palate delivers medium dry flavours of malt, vanilla, sweet spice, and a touch of mocha rounded off with a spicy flourish. Perfect balance. Clean, dry finish. Reasonable length with an aftertaste of mocha and spice. The leaner, lighter and more elegant rum of the collection. 40.0% Alc./Vol.

Other Reviews.... The nosing passes find layers of honey, old leather, palm oil, old oak and molasses. The palate entry explodes with succulent tastes of oak, vanilla cream, and honey; the midpalate offers tastes of cookie spices, raisins, dates, and dark chocolate. Ends up balanced, correctly sweet, and elegant. A fabulous deal. - P.P. (5/1/2007) - 90-95: Superb/Highly Recommended Wine Enthusiast Magazine

...Gold amber color. Aromas of toffeed nuts, dried pineapple and papaya, mocha, vanilla bean, and rich brown spices follow through on a smooth, velvety entry to an off-dry medium-to-full body with honey, cherry cola, and tropical fruit salad notes. Finishes with nice polished wood and spice notes and a balancing wave of pepper and wet stone minerality. A little on the sweet side, but extremely inviting and drinkable. Other reviews... [2006 release] Fascinating nose - whisky like. The dark fruits remind me of Canadian Club 20 year old or a sherried single malt, like Glendronach 12. The nose continues with pastry, like an almond croissant, sweet wood, and something like black currants or cherries - incredible! The palate has a touch of sweetness up front to begin, but this is not a sweet rum. There is a good dose of wood and spice before exiting to a woody, medium-length finish. I just nosed the empty Glencairn glass for 30 minutes afterward. Outstanding rum! - rumratings.com

Other reviews... [40% ABV bottling tasted] "Of course a demerara style rum of this age is going to be heavy and rich. However, there's an impressive finesse to it. Dark, roasty chocolate, molasses, brown sugar, caramel and espresso are cut with earthy walnut and bitter, smoky tobacco. This possesses more spice than the other expressions -with sprinklings of cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and clove. If you're lucky enough to sip this, you're definitely doing something right in your life." 96 points - distiller.com

"Well over 800 aged dark rums enjoyed and El Dorado 25 year is easily on my Top 10 list." [1986 release tasted] - rumratings.com

2009 El Dorado Port Mourant Single Still 12 Year Old Demerara Rum (750ml)
    GUYANA

    Bottle
    $1440.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

El Dorado originally launched a 'Rare Single Still Series' in 2016 featuring rums from three renowned Guyanese stills. These new releases come bottled at a much lower ABV, meaning the prices are also lower, making them much more accessible.

Demerara Distillers actually operate nine different stills capable of producing a range of rum styles. Of particular significance are three heritage wooden stills relocated from their original estates: Enmore, with its wooden continuous Coffey still. Port Mourant, with its wooden double pot still and Versailles with its wooden single pot still. The aim of these bottlings is to reveal the individuality and diversity of flavours that each still contributes.

The Port Mourant still which is the only one of its kind in use today was constructed in 1732 on the Port Mourant Estate, and later moved to the Uitvlugt Estate, then to its present location at the Diamond Estate in 2000.

Other reviews... [2006 release] This rum was made on an old, wooden Greenheart still built in the 18th century. It has got a fabulously rich colour; deep amber. Aggressive aromas of leather, pepperiness, demerara, coffee bean, chicory, anise, and a subtle fruity berry quality on the finish. This is the most pedal to the metal of El Dorado's three single still series (Enmore and Versailles being the other two). Comparatively, the Versailles has the heavy demerara but is more subtle and delicate, with vanilla and a smidge more fruit. The Enmore is demure on the demerara and has more chocolate and toffee. 40% Alc./Vol. - nataliemaclean.com/
