Produced from fruit grown in several old-vine vineyards across McLaren Vale, spanning from Blewitt Springs and Seaview in the North to Willunga and Sellicks Hill in the South. The fruit is picked early in the morning and crushed into open-top concrete vats for fermentation with indigenous yeast. After fermentation is complete, the wine is gently pressed into French oak barrels where it matures for 12-14 months.
Midnight black core with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Pronounced aromas of liquorice and blackberry fill the nostrils with some vanillin oak, scorched earth and pepper notes also evident. Rich and opulent the full bodied palate is swamped with blackberry, liquorice and dark plum fruits which carry a plush feel. Spicy vanillin oak, earth and pepper elements sit in the background. Velvet smooth tannins concluding long, ripe and fleshy.

From a range of sites of varied geology, this was fermented in open concrete vats with indigenous yeasts; élevage in French oak puncheons and hogsheads. From a cool year, there’s notable elegance to this, though the fruits are both red and black – dark cherry and plum, blackberry, raspberry – accented with a tarry, charry note, master stock spices, mint, cacao nibs and cracked earth and iron-like mineral notes. It over-delivers at this tariff. Drink by 2031.

The concentration of fruit in this 2019 The Medhyk Shiraz is evident from the very first sniff. It is pungent with raspberries, blackberries, salted licorice, star anise, pink peppercorns, char, tea, blood and even sun-dried tomatoes. In the mouth, the wine is exactly this. It's a wonderful, delicious, complex wine with hutzpah and balance in equal measure. Drink it or cellar it—your call. Drink 2022-2037.

Rich and plush yet simultaneously refined and well structured, the palate is awash with blackberry, dark plum and liquorice fruits which meld into a back drop of vanillin cedar, light scorched earth and spicy pepper elements. Polished mouth feel with velvet like yet sturdily built tannins. Long sophisticated conclusion. Trophy winner at the 2021 McLaren Vale Wine Show.

This is good, defined by a splay of ripe grape tannins melding effortlessly with a band of oak (17 months, all Burgundian, 20% new), gentle bottle age and the reductive stamp of the house, imparting tension and, in this instance, not too much of the iodine note. Old-vine punch. Mottled blue and black berries, Seville orange, some spice and soaring Blewitt Springs violets. Plush, but taut. Measured, but generous. Very good warm-climate shiraz, as far as warm-climate shiraz goes.

The Warboys vineyard is organic and certified biodynamic and is planted adjacent to the cellar door in McLaren Vale. The fruit for the 2019 Warboys Shiraz was handpicked, wild fermented with a combination of whole berries and whole bunches, then matured in new and seasoned French oak for 14 months. On the nose, this is layered with deli meats and salted licorice, coffee grounds, purple berries and exotic spice. In the mouth, the wine is supple, fresh and concentrated: a dangerous combination for Shiraz lovers. Wines like this rarely get their chance to age. Lovely. Good. Yes. Drink 2022-2037.

The 2010 Solaia puts on an incredible show that hits all the senses and keeps your unyielding attention for as long as there is wine in the bottle. There are various ways to describe the bouquet. First, is the wine’s sweet side, as this beautiful 75-20-5 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc delivers ripe cherry, black currant, baking spice and dark chocolate. After that, the wine becomes redolent of tobacco, balsam, bay leaf, rum cake and dark licorice. The bouquet is all encompassing and complete. A firmly structured backbone is padded generously by the fleshy richness of its consistency. This is a gorgeous wine that will age for decades. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2040.

In this context, it is obvious why the 2010 is the greatest Solaia ever made. The 2010 has it all; expressive aromatics, wonderfully nuanced fruit and tons of supporting structure. The 2010 has been magnificent since I started tasting the component wines in 2011. Now that it is in bottle, it is every bit as stunning as I had hoped. Readers will not want to miss this towering masterpiece from the Antinori family. Ideally, the 2010 should be cellared until at least age ten. This mesmerizing, wonderfully complete Solaia represents the height of finesse Antinori started to achieve with the 2004. In time, the 2010 will be recognized as one of the all-time legendary Solaias. Actually, it already is. I can't think of a better wine with which to wrap up this monumental, truly once-in-a-lifetime tasting. Drink 2020-2054.

A triumph for Solaia. It suggests the greatness of the legendary 1997 Solaia. This is a wine with very subtle and complex aromas and flavors with currants, licorice and raspberries. Wonderful nose. Full body, with ultra-fine tannins and a long, long finish. It lasts for minutes on the palate. Love this wine. The precision of the cabrenet sauvignon comes through here. Better in 2016.

The 2010 Solaia is less immediately giving on the nose than the Tignanello of the same vintage, taking time to reveal nuances of grilled herbs, black raspberry and currants beneath the cedar and spice. As it opens, it builds in intensity reaching a crescendo on the long powerful finish. There is plenty of dense fruit to back up mouth filling tannins, which are remarkably sophisticated and a testament to the ongoing fine tuning at this Antinori property. Drink 2020 - 2040.

There is a magical infinity, a continuous loop of compatibilities, between the icon wines of Tuscany and the 2015 vintage. The stunning 2015 Solaia is solid evidence of this perfect alignment. This was a warm vintage that shows less favorably in my opinion in different parts of Italy and with other grapes that render their most elegant performances in the cooler vintages. I would put pure expressions of Nebbiolo and Sangiovese in this category. However, Tuscany and many of her great blended reds (made partially or fully with international grapes) operate according to a different logic. To me, their maximum expression comes when you can taste that Tuscan sunshine beaming from within. Its rays are brilliant and warm. They shine across the senses with opulence and intensity. The very name Solaia evokes the concept of sunshine and this unique Tuscan wine archetype I am referring to. With the 2015 vintage, Solaia is liquid sunshine not just in name but also in fact. The bouquet is immediately soft and sensual with dark fruit, spice and sweet tobacco. The mouthfeel shows intensity and power, but you don't get any heavy residue from the dry extract (measured at 33 grams per liter). Indeed, the wine feels glossy, tonic and fresh. It is composed of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with Sangiovese and a tiny part Cabernet Franc. There is a bit of crunch or snap that comes thanks to the more acidity-prone Sangiovese grape (the wine measures 3.5 in pH). Finally, the tannins are beautifully sweet and ripe. This wine is meticulously executed, and the 2015 vintage lives up to an ideal of what we imagine Solaia to be. It will be released about a week after this review is published.

Antinori’s Peppoli was first made in 1985 and year in year out proves to be a reliable, great value Chianti Classico. Produced from predominately Sangiovese grapes, the wine was aged for approximately 9 months in large Slavonian oak casks with a small parcel in stainless steel tanks to preserve the freshness of fruit.
Deep dark red black tinged colour with a red to dark red hue. Delightful red currant and red liquorice aromas stream out of the glass complimented by hints of vanillin cedar, earth, dried herbs and spice. Elegant and mid weighted the palate is decorated with savoury red currant and red cherry fruits which possess a fresh, energetic underbelly. Infusions of fresh herbs, dusty earth, traces of tobacco and spicy cedar lie on the back half. Fine, slightly dryish tannins with a vibrant red fruited finish.

Antonelli San Marco is a 190-hectare estate acquired by the Antonelli family in 1881, making it one of the historic wineries in the Montefalco DOCG region. The estate cultivates native grapes like Trebbiano Spoletin, Grechetto, Sangiovese, and places a significant emphasis on Sagrantino.
Sagrantino is the main red grape in Montefalco, grown on hills between 300m and 400m altitude. The grapes, picked by hand, undergo a brief skin fermentation and then mature for 7 months in a blend of stainless steel tanks and concrete vats. This process results in a fresh style that can be enjoyed when young but also has the potential to age well in the bottle for several years.

The Contrario Umbria Rosso is the second wine for Antonelli's Sagrantino vines. It's dusty and floral, with violet and blue flowers complementing crushed cherries. This round, spicy, energetic effort has tantalizing acidity, maintaining a lovely freshness despite its rich red berry fruits. Fine-grained tannins coat the palate as residual acids keep the mouth watering through the long and staining finale. Drink 2024 - 2028.

Ao Yun is the realisation of a dream to produce world class, Bordeaux-style wine from China. Commissioned by Moët Hennessy, Dr. Tony Jordan embarked on a four year long mission to scour the terrain of China for an ideal climate to produce top class Cabernet Sauvignon. Settling in the foothills of the Himalayas, to the north of the Yunnan province, Ao Yun hails from the legendary and remote village of Shangri-La. Sitting at an altitude ranging between 2,200 and 2,600 metres above sea level, the estate is named after the magnificent clouds that gather above the permanently snow-capped mountain ranges: in Mandarin, “Ao Yun” means “flying above the clouds”.
Farming is handled by local families across the 28 hectares of vineyards, divided among 314 blocks with 727 tiny sub-parcels. Organic viticulture is practiced in the vineyards, while everything is done by hand with no machinery. The 2018 Ao Yun is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot, 7% Syrah and 4% Petit Verdot.

I love the depth and complexity of the nose, which brings you down deeply into the wine, showing blackberry, ink, tar, earth, incense, cloves, and black licorice. Thyme, too. The purity of the fruit, including cassis, is the real thing. This is full-bodied, but remains so fresh and vertical on the palate. The tannins are so fine and integrated, producing a millefeuille-like layering of tannin and cool, blue fruit. Incredible wine. The greatest wine made in China so far. 60% cabernet sauvignon, 19% cabernet franc, 10% merlot, 7% syrah and 4% petit verdot. 26,000 bottles made. Drinkable now, but will be so much better in four or five years.

Having tasted the 2018 Ao Yun for the first time in May 2021 at high altitude in the village of Adong (where the Ao Yun winery is located), it was fascinating to retaste this vintage much closer to sea level in Beijing on December 2, 2021. This proved to be a useful comparative opportunity too, having only a few hours earlier shown the 2017 vintage in a tasting of various Shangri-La wines in Beijing the evening before. The 2018 Ao Yun is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot, 7% Syrah and 4% Petit Verdot. As observed in my note from May, this blend shows increased confidence in some of the other varieties coming more online in Ao Yun’s four village sites of Xidang, Sinong, Shuori and Adong (with Merlot playing an increased role). The 2018 Ao Yun maintains its very deep purple appearance. On the nose, albeit youthful, there is already open and abundant super-ripe cassis, black cherry, mulberry, blueberry and black plum fruit with less pyrazine observable in this bottle (although this becomes more overt on the palate). That core of fruit is complemented by subtle new oak notes of clove, toast and smoke. On the palate, the 2018 Ao Yun has abundant, fine-grained and coating tannins with some lively acidity and well-integrated 14.5% alcohol, these structural elements being well-knitted together with the vibrant core of fruit, touch of herbaceous character (sage, mint) and subtle new oak notes. With its long length and marked concentration, although youthful, the 2018, tasted closer to sea level, has the kind of approachability similar to some Napa Cabernet blends. But it is unquestionably super youthful and is taking on entirely its own identity as the very best blend of these four remarkable village vineyard sites (each at different altitudes). The 2018 is just nudging ahead of the 2017 and 2015 in terms of quality. It will be fascinating to see its evolution in bottle. Drink 2023 - 2033.

Gorgeously seductive nose, this is rich and abundant, aromas bursting out the glass, smells sweet and spicy, five spice fragrance with sweet blackcurrant and black cherry aromas. Mouthcoating and invigorating on the palate, totally harmonious and balanced with the salinity and wet stone nuances coming through backed by ripe, but so well defined, fruit flavors. Such purity on both the nose and palate. This is seriously refined, aromatics are preserved, balancing power with excellent acidity, so you get these bright and energetic flavours but still with structure. Seductive but this also has a sense of classicism. Lovely saline elements and cooling touch at the end with all the flavours lingering long in the mouth. Will be interesting to see how it ages. Drinking Window 2029 - 2045.

Polished, smooth and ripe tannins that have plenty of movement in them. Ao Yun has been a wine with confidence and personality since its first vintage of 2013, and here balances concentrated damson and black cherry fruits with fragrant black tea, mandarin peel and sage together with earthier smoked cumin and saffran spice. 2018 was a late harvest through to November 15 (beginning September 7) and ripening under cooler, dry skies in November has translated into drawn out sculpted flavours that reflect the mountain site, and low yields of 21hl/h. Initial ageing took place in 50% Chinese earthenware jars and 50% oak barrels for five months, then a further 10 months in 30% new oak barrels. The team introduced village crus in this year also, drawing them from the four villages where the vines are located, and keeping 54% of overall production for Ao Yun itself - just another clue to the ambitions at this briliant estate. Very deep dark red black heart with a dark red hue. Heady dark to black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry scents fill the nostrils with some vanilla, subtle scorched earth and spice notes ensuing. Rich and plush, the palate is layered with dark raspberry, liquorice and dark cherry fruits with some scorched earth, vanillin cedar and delicate peppered dried herb elements lying underneath. Perfectly integrated velvet smooth tannins concluding long, sleek and refined.

Aged for 18 months in a mix of third and fourth fill French oak. Super saturated inky black heart with an equally deep bright dark red black hue. Morello cherry and liquorice aromas infused with a mix of dried herbs and earthy graphite like notes are followed by hints of spicy vanillin cedar. Juicy and bright the palate features freshly crushed dark to morello cherry and liquorice flavours over infusions of Mediterranean herbs and spicy earth. Very energetic acidity with dry, chalky tannins and a finish that’s taut and tightly wound.

Heady ripe blackberry, liquorice and dark plum aromas waft out of the glass trailed by some smoky vanillin cedar, dark chocolate and peppered earth like notes. Rich and voluptuously textured the palate is a concentrate of blackberry, liquorice, black cherry and dark plum fruits. Notions of toasty vanillin oak, earthy mocha like characters and spicy pepper are sprawled across the back half. Silky smooth yet structural tannin framework. Outstanding power finishing deep, long and opulent.

Named in honour of the two Barossans who planted a vineyard in 1912, the Eddies Old Vine Shiraz is a blend of this century plus vineyard along with fruit from a 59 year old vineyard and a block planted in 1975. Maturation took place in French oak hogsheads of which 60% were new for a period of 30 months.
Dense inky black in colour with a very deep dark red black hue. Soaring out of the glass are aromas of ripe dark plum and liquorice which are complimented by toasty vanillin oak, mocha, earth and spice notes. Rich, concentrated and lush, dark plum and liquorice fruits fill the mouth with ample volume and density. Charry vanillin oak, scorched earth and spicy mocha characters ensue. Opulently textured with velvet like tannins carrying a sturdy underbelly. Possesses its trademark show of power finishing long and toasty.

From vines planted in 1912, maturation took place in new French oak puncheons for 24 months with total production limited to 50 cases. Impenetrable inky black heart with a very deep dark red black hue. Engulfing the nostrils are ripe black cherry and liquorice scents followed by blackberry, toasty oak, black olive and peppered earth notes. The large scaled palate is doused with cascading waves of opulent black cherry, liquorice and blackberry fruits which overlay a dark chocolate, toasty vanillin oak, earth and subtle blackpepper backdrop. Velvet smooth tannins yet stern in its structure. Magnificent power with a super plush and extraordinarily long finish.

Atze's Corner is owned by sixth generation Barossa Valley vigneron, Andrew Kalleske. At the heart of the project are low-yielding 1912 and 1951 Barossa Valley Shiraz vines planted adjacent to the locally-known Atze's Corner, in an unassuming plot of land to the east of Nuriootpa on the valley floor. Fruit is also sourced from several other vineyards, also owned by the Kalleske family. Two of the Barossa Valley's prized sub regions make up 100% of the Shiraz in this wine - Ebenezer and Koonunga. Open, small-batch fermentation, hand plunging and pumping and minimal filtering and fining define Andrew's unobtrusive approach. Maturation takes place in a combination of new French oak (30%) with the balance in seasoned French and American oak for a period of 18 months.
Impenetrable inky black heart with a very deep dark red black hue. Intense ripe blackberry and liquorice aromas are followed by some dark plum, well integrated vanillin cedar, earthy fennel and pepper. Rich, full and opulently textured the palate is flush with ripe dark plum, blackberry and liquorice fruits. Beautifully balanced with an underlying freshness, vanillin cedar, subtle earth, faint cinnamon spice and peppered fennel characters sit in the background. Bright juicy finish with polished tannins and a long blackpepper infused aftertaste.

Featuring Durif’s trademark colour saturation the wine pours an impenetrable inky black with an equally deep dark purple black hue. Morello cherry, liquorice and black plum aromas fill the nostrils followed by vanillin cedar, hints of earthy graphite and pepper. Rich morello cherry, liquorice, black plum and blueberry fruits have an opulent yet robust feel framed by a muscular tannin framework and bright youthful acidity. Midnight black heart with a deep dark to brick red hue. Elevated blackcurrant, dark plum and liquorice scents meld into mint, spicy vanillin cedar and dusty earth notes. Medium bodied with a soft fleshy feel, some toasty vanillin cedar characters poke through the finish overshadowing the spicy blackcurrant and plum fruits on the generous front half. Infusions of mint and dusty earth characters are also apparent. Slightly dryish but fine grained tannins with a spicy cedar laced aftertaste.
