While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

Hand-picked in small batches from three Lower and two Upper Yarra vineyards, most destemmed, 10% of the batches fermented with 100% whole bunches, typically 10 days on skins (a few batches for 1 month), matured in French oak (10% new). This shares its elegance with Harriet's Vineyard, and also a balanced web of spicy, savoury tannins. Rob Hall didn't miss the opportunities of the '17 vintage. Drink by 2024.

2022 Roc Breia (by Theo Dancer) Pinot NoirBurgundy, FRANCE$255. 00Bottle$3060.00 DozenABV: 13%Closure: CorkRoc Breïa is an exciting new project in the Maconnais led by Chassagne-Montrachet's Theo Dancer (of Domaine Vincent Dancer fame). In 2021, Theo was invited to visit a mature, 10-hectare vineyard in the Bray district of the Maconnais that two investors had recently purchased. Dancer immediately saw the potential of the mature vines and limestone-rich soils. He agreed to manage the project, but only on the condition that he could control everything. Taking over in July 2021, with the help of full-time vigneron Bastien Cubillé, Dancer immediately began raising the vineyard work to his standards, bringing the soils and vines back into balance, planting cover crops, and cultivating inter-vine.
Other Reviews....
Théo Dancer's 2022 Pinot Noir is rather deep and muscular this year, opening in the glass with aromas of plumy fruit and sweet spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, deep and primary palate framed by sweet, powdery tannins. It's matured in used 500-liter barrels. Drink 2024-2035.

2024 Sailor Seeks Horse Pinot NoirHuon Valley, Tasmania, AUSTRALIA$69. 99Bottle$839.88 DozenABV: 13.4%Closure: StelvinSailor Seeks Horse is a tiny vineyard that's one of Australia’s most southerly, located in the Huon valley in southern Tasmania. Owners Paul and Gilli Lipscombe have brought considerable vineyard and winemaking experience to this venture, and they've been producing outstanding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay here for over a decade.
While there are a multitude of clonal Pinot Noir plantings on site, this release utilises their more traditional Tasmanian clones of D2V6 and D5V12. A small percentage of whole bunch (5%) is included, with a wild fermentation and gentle plunging before being left on skins post ferment and the wine is then pressed straight to barrel. A mixture of barriques, hogsheads and puncheons are used as the wine is aged for 12 months in oak.
Other Reviews....
The 2024 Pinot Noir is richer and more savory than the Small Wonder Vineyard (the vineyards are in different areas, yet this is cooler), and the wine is ethereal and fine, floral, rocky and mineral. This aligns with the personality of the Chardonnay and the reason why this sandstone-laden site is so special. The flavor is intense but light, and this is a great thing. The tannins are chalky and supple. The fruit sees extended post-ferment maceration, prior to being pressed to oak with full solids sans sulfur. Malolactic fermentation occurs here and is done around mid-winter. I love the delicacy and poise of this wine. The wines from this producer and vineyard come warmly recommended. This was made with 5% whole-bunch fruit and spent months in barrel before being bottled sans fining. 13.4% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2026-2036.

The 2024 Huldufólk Pinot Noir leads with a deep nose of rose oil and cherry pip, sandalwood, star anise, licorice, red apple skin and wet chalk. It is ethereal, as all of these wines are, silky and svelte, with layers of red fruit atop a bed of mineral tannins. This is a beautiful wine; it's intellectually and cerebrally stimulating but delicious and pleasurable as well—the perfect interval at which to appreciate wine. Go far out of your way to seek out this producer in the cool and picturesque Huon Valley. This wine is made exclusively with Clone 115. A minuscule 300 bottles were filled. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2026-2036.

While there are a multitude of clonal Pinot Noir plantings on site, this release utilises their more traditional Tasmanian clones of 8048 and 2051. A small percentage of whole bunch (5%) is included, with a wild fermentation and gentle plunging before being left on skins post ferment and the wine is then pressed straight to barrel. A mixture of barriques, hogsheads and puncheons are used as the wine is aged for 12 months in oak.

There's a lovely waft of souk-like spice as soon as you approach this year's release. It suffuses gently through the perfectly formed red cherry, raspberry and red plum fruits. Hints of redcurrants, kombu, leaf litter, crushed stone, sea breeze, charcuterie and ozone. Airy and wonderfully detailed with gentle spicy red fruits, a cloud of powdery tannin and a super sapid sour-cherry acid line on the fade out. Delicious, filigreed drinking. Drink 2024-2034.

Huldufolk, the third of the trio of Sailor Seeks Horse pinot noirs, is 100% clone 115, destemmed, 12 months in oak, 13% new. Light ruby in the glass with delicately poised aromas of redcurrant, red plum and cranberry fruits. Like the '22, it's a beautifully choreographed wine; fruit, spice, the floral and terrestrial are all in step with a vibrant energy and lip-smacking sapidity. Detailed and savoury with a swell of umami as the wine slowly recedes, it's another cracking release for SSH. Drink 2024-2036.

A Huon Valley–sourced wine displaying a sheen of amaro and spice courtesy of 5% whole bunches in the fermentation. There is a wild, perfumed edge akin to a siren's call pour moi. A complex whirling dervish of raspberry, bramble, game, roast chestnuts, souk-like spices, cherry clafoutis, turned earth and crushed stone with a vivid mineral cadence and a distinct voice of site and vision. Drink 2023 - 2030.

Dave Brookes - James Halliday's Australian Wine CompanionIt’s a complex offering with sweet herbs notes floating over game, earth, mint, orange peel and sweet-sour cherry flavours. It smells a bit ripe and raspberried but then the palate takes all manner of complex turns. There’s a laciness to the tannin, and a mineral-like aspect, with bunchy-herb notes ever-present and the general impression that everything has been carefully placed. Those ripe/sweet top notes were my only hesitation; everything else here feels excellent, most especially the finish. Drink 2023 - 2031

2022 Sangreal By Farr Pinot NoirGeelong, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$125. 00Bottle$1500.00 DozenCellar: Drink now - 10 Years (2024-2034)ABV: 13.5%Closure: Diam CorkThe Sangreal Vineyard is the oldest planting (1994) on a north-facing slope of red ironstone on the surface going to limestone to bluestone below. The rows run north to south, gaining full sun exposure throughout the day and resulting in prettier, more perfumed wines. It’s always the first vineyard to be harvested and is consistently made with 70% whole bunch and aged in 70% new oak for 18 months.
Semi translucent, faintly cloudy red core with dark red to black shaded edges and a light red hue. Highly perfumed, intense and alluring the nose offers up violet, spicy red cherry, strawberry, red liquorice and clove scents which are flanked by dried meat, brambly cedar, forest floor and herb notes. Wonderfully rich, concentrated and powerful yet remarkably light on its feet, the palate is greeted by a tsunami of red cherry, strawberry, rhubarb and red liquorice fruits which flood every corner of the mouth. Silky smooth, seamlessly integrated tannin structure. Expansive in it’s feel, flashes of clove, brambly cedar, meaty elements, forest floor and dried herbs add detail to what is an astonishingly long and supple conclusion. A highly seductive Pinot that’s up there in quality with Grand Cru Burgundy.

This wine is produced from fruit grown on a single block in the Syme on Yarra Vineyard, Gruyere. This block is located approximately 150m above sea level and covers some of the most uniform clay loam soil profiles across the whole vineyard. Twenty five percent of the wine underwent whole bunch fermentation and maturation took place in French oak of which 35% was new for a period of 10 months.

From a single block on the Syme-on-Yarra Vineyard, 25% whole bunches, 75% whole berries, 14-day cold soak, wild-fermented, matured in French oak (35% new) for 10 months. The whole bunch has been upscaled from that of its Gladysdale sibling, but the extra depth to the cherry/plum fruit more than copes. This is a most attractive wine. Drink by 2029.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.
Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
