2021 Rob Hall Pinot Noir
Growing up in Healesville, a young Rob Hall did some summer work in the vineyards during the early to mid nineties before taking up full time work at Yarra Ridge then Punt Road. From 2002 to 2011 he was the winemaker at Mount Mary, it wasn’t until 2014 that he took the leap and began his own operation.
2021 was a superb vintage in the Yarra Valley, the slow ripening conditions producing wines with lovely aromatics, supple textures and plenty of moreish appeal. The fruit for this Pinot Noir was sourced from three vineyards – Harriet’s, Boat O’Craigo and Willowlake with only 10% of the Harriet’s component being whole bunch. Maturation was predominantly in seasoned hogheads and puncheons (300 & 500L). A step up on the excellent 2020 vintage, the 2021 rendition also comes complete with smart new packaging.
A superb Yarra Valley vintage has produced a smooth, expansive and intensely flavoured Pinot that’s incredibly moreish.
Semi translucent dark red colour with a vibrant light red hue. Delightful violet, red cherry and winter strawberry scents enchant the olfactory senses with a perfume like intensity. Hints of rhubarb, forest floor, spicy cedar and fresh herbs also chime in. Smooth, intensely flavoured and expansive, the palate is flooded with moreish ripe red cherry, winter strawberry and subtle rhubarb fruits. Outstanding power wave with the flavours fanning out like a peacocks tail. Adding complexity are forest floor, dried herb and spicy cedar characters. Silky tannins finishing fresh, supple and very long.
Drink over the next 4-5 years.
