Pinot Noir
While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

Ravishing nose of summer flowers and berries! So much depth and such great structure, but in spite of that, it is suave and silky with so much energy and finesse. Very long, graceful finish. Drink or hold.

Stuart Pigott - JamesSuckling.comThis is similar to the Petits Monts if perhaps just a touch riper. There is fine verve to the slightly bigger if less mineral-inflected flavors that flash very good power on the equally firm and persistent finish. This is pretty much a classic Suchots and very Vosne in style. Drink 2031+.

Fruit from Yarra Junction and Dixons Creek. Another bright, well-made and well-priced pinot from the team at Mandala. A light, bright cherry red. Gently lifted aromas of freshly poached red fruits, floral notes and a hint of forest floor in the background. Equally gentle on the light- to medium-bodied, poised and persistent palate. Fermentation in open pots with 100% whole berries, matured for nine months in French puncheons and barriques (25% new). A very bright crimson. I gave this a few good swirls, which released an impressive bouquet featuring black cherries, incense and a little underbrush. Fleshy with lovely inner-mouth feel, the palate is rounded out by its svelte, pliant tannins. It's good now but will be even better in the next two to four years. It's great, too, to see the number of delicious under $40 pinots being produced in the Yarra these days. Drink by 2028.

This wine smells like a summer picnic in a rose garden – petals galore, ripe red cherries, raspberries and pomegranate with a spicy kick of pink peppercorns. Mount Barrow is an exceptional vineyard at the higher altitude, eastern end of the Mount Barker subregion of the Great Southern region in Western Australia. Subtle oak spice (25% new) and approximately 15-20% whole bunch allows the quality of the fruit to speak for itself. In the mouth, it is seamless, with flavours unfurling like a peacock’s tail – the mark of a great Pinot Noir. Cranberries, redcurrants and freshly grated nutmeg evolve into rhubarb and earthy just-picked beetroot. Lavender, fennel, rosemary and sage drive a savoury herbal note. There is perfectly integrated acidity and powder-fine tannins. The complexity in this young wine promises cellaring will delight. It stands apart from many Australian Pinots for its elegance and Old World-esque flavours that will extend well beyond the flirty berries of youth.

The Mount Barrow vineyard has impressive elevation in an area where there isn't much, and it brings poise and detail to the top notes of this wine. It is complex and dense and layered and muscular – all hallmarks of great wines from Mount Barker – and it shows the capacity for longevity that we look for when making assessments about quality. This is structured, powerful, spicy and littered with savoury spice through the long finish. An excellent pinot in an Australian context – as contentious as that is, for a pinot from the west. A very restrained nose leads in to a compact and very long palate. The cherry and spice flavours don't provide flourish or flamboyance on the palate; rather they forge, very seriously, across a predetermined track, straight through to a long finish. Quite frankly, this is one of the best value Pinot Noirs I’ve tasted all year. The craftsmanship in layering flavour, structure, and finesse is exceptional. There’s a vivid interplay of Bing cherries, wild black raspberries, and shiso mint leaf. A touch of fresh oregano lingers, thanks to a portion of whole bunch—an impeccable, Goldilocks-like expression of “just right.” Sinewy tannins hold the wine’s skeletal frame upright, while plump pockets of pomegranate pulp and blood orange bitters swell across the finish. Subtle shades of brown spice—mace and cinnamon—stay neatly within the lines. This wine punches well above its price point and offers a shining preview of what Alex Beckett has in store for this youthful winery. Watch this space—and buy it by the dozen. Drink whilst cooking dinner, munching on the prep and humming a happy tune.

Once again there is a highly appealing freshness to the essence of red cherry, raspberry and floral elements, the latter of which is reflected by the sleek and relatively refined medium-bodied flavors that possess excellent punch on the beautifully persistent though markedly structured finish. This isn't as refined as the Caillerets but there is slightly better mid-palate density.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Les Champans was showing especially well, bursting with expressive aromas of rose petal, ripe wild berries, blood orange rind and dark chocolate. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, rich and textural, with a layered core of concentrated fruit, fine structuring tannins and a long finish. The suppleness of the vintage has tempered Champans' tendency to structural muscularity but not its fleshy fruit, making for a delightful gourmand wine.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2019)The 2017 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru is tasted from two barrels. It demonstrates wonderful grace and precision with mineral-infused cranberry and wild strawberry fruit. There is a sense of vitality and sophistication here. A slightly more deeply pitched nose displays an evident spiciness to the plum, dark raspberry and violet-scented aromas. The highly energetic and intense medium weight flavors offer even more minerality on the well-detailed flavors that possess more depth and a bit more length as well on the firmer finish. This is very Frémiets in character and a wine that should amply reward extended keeping.
91-93 points
Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Fremiets offers up aromas of plums, cassis, wood smoke, dark chocolate and rich soil tones, followed by a medium to full-bodied, chalk and structured palate that's firmer and more muscular than the supple, giving Clos des Angles. The soils here are thinner and the wine inherently less gourmand, but it will reward the patient with lovely purity and transparency.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2019)The 2017 Volnay Fremiet 1er Cru has an expressive bouquet with veins of blue fruit that strafe the vibrant raspberry and crushed strawberry. Here there is fine mineralité tucked just underneath. The palate is vibrant, almost effervescent on the entry with blood orange infusing the red fruit, great tension and quite pointed tannin, a Fremiet that is bursting with life. Superb.

Neal Martin - VinousFine fresh mid purple, this has quite a discreet nose of dark red fruit yet with the suggestion of some power behind. Very little soil in top of the rock which somehow speaks as much of Pommard even though the rock is white limestone typical of Volnay. Perfumed, airy and more high-toned aromas derive more from the red side of the fruit spectrum while displaying pretty touch of spice and exotic tea. This is wonderful and I very much like the style and sheer class of this built-to-age Taillepieds.

The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin. The oak is beautifully integrated, notes of orange rind and even just a subtle touch of honey towards the relatively powerful and sustained finish that just feels audacious. Wonderful.

Neal Martin - VinousMedium dense purple, the nose has gone missing for the moment. But the palate is absolutely gorgeous, beautifully multi-layered and with the requisite velvet texture. And lovely detailed alpine strawberry notes at the back. Far from a monster but very lovely.

This too is beautifully elegant with its ripe and pure aromas of essence of red cherry liqueur, violet and rose petal scents. The equally refined if a bit less mineral-inflected flavors possess excellent verve on the long and slightly less structured finish that also evidences a touch of warmth. This needs to develop more depth but the underlying material appears to be present for that to occur.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundUnwinding in the glass with aromas of cherries, red berries, spices and rose petals, d'Angerville's 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Champans is medium to full-bodied, layered and velvety, with an ample core that's underpinned by an elegantly muscular chassis of powdery tannin and girdled by lively acids. Seamless and integrated, it's marked but not dominated by the sucrosity of fruit that defines the vintage.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)Magical depth of colour with a high-class dense fruit, and again a certain amount of oak. A little bit more muscle here with a pleasing and concentrated ripe dark fruit, but no hint at all of over-ripeness. Lovely fresh tingle at the finish.

A distinctly cooler nose is composed by aromas of red currant, cherry and a broad array of spice and floral wisps. There is outstanding intensity to the racy, well-detailed and strikingly stony medium weight flavors that deliver superb persistence and even more minerality on the balanced and wonderfully refreshing finale. This is also very classy juice and should age well for years.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs has turned out very nicely in bottle, mingling aromas of raspberries and blood orange with hints of espresso roast and sweet soil tones. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and multidimensional, it's impressively fine-boned and elegant, the inherently muscular vintage notwithstanding, with a vibrant core of fruit, exquisitely powdery tannins and a long, saline finish. If d'Angerville's 2018 Champans is a fine example of the year, the Clos des Ducs by contrast transcends it.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)Not the deepest of colours but perhaps the finest of bouquets. Magical concentration, yet exquisite finesse, a fresh thread with a slight orange blossom, this is complex and complete, needs taking time over. The least marked by the vintage. Excellent finish with a ripe yet beautifully balanced perfume.

In contrast to the precocious 2017, the 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Les Champans is tight-knit and reserved and will demand patience. Offering up aromas of plums, cherries, violets, dark chocolate and forest floor, the wine is, medium to full-bodied, chewy and firm, with lovely depth at the core but an imposing, muscular chassis of fine-grained tannin that asserts itself on the finish. I have no concerns about the balance of this Champans, but readers should plan on waiting at least a dozen years before pulling corks.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate(the entire bottom of this vineyard was fried by frost, according to régisseur François Duvivier): Bright, dark red-ruby. Medicinal blueberry and licorice aromas are lifted by a minty high note; less showy and more restrained on the nose than the Taillepieds and Caillerets today. Then wonderfully dense, primary and pure on the palate, but more vertical and less opulent than the Taillepieds and Caillerets. Strong mineral energy accentuates the impression of vibrancy. A bit less open to inspection today owing to its firm tannic spine.
92-95 points
Stephen Tanzer - VinousA fresh yet notably ripe nose is composed by liqueur-like aromas of plum, spice and earth. The delicious, refined and once again strikingly pure flavors are a bit less muscular and mineral-driven than those of the Taillepieds yet the tannic spine shaping the lingering if ever-so-slightly warm finish is just as firm. This is going to require at least moderate patience before it begins to be approachable.

The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs is a stunning young wine, unwinding in the glass with a beautiful but reserved bouquet of rose petal, candied violet, red cherries, plums, dark chocolate and hints of the savory bass-notes to come. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with lovely purity of fruit, dense but velvety tannins and a bright animating line of acidity, concluding with a penetrating and precise finish. There's an energy to the fruit that marks this out as a special vintage for the Clos des Ducs, though it will demand a decade's patience at a minimum.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate(from a normal crop of 38 hectoliters per hectare; aging in about 23% new oak, vs. 20% for the rest of these premier crus): Dark ruby. Complex but youthfully restrained aromas of cassis, blueberry, violet and licorice, with a spicy element that Guillaume d'Angerville attributes to the vineyard. Superconcentrated wine with compelling sweetness and energy. An impeccably balanced, potentially great Volnay. Guillaume d'Angerville believes that the vines' windy situation high up on the hillside protected them against the frost in April.
93-96 points
Stephen Tanzer - VinousInterestingly, this seems to possess elements of all three of the preceding wines as the cool and ultra-elegant nose exhibits a broad range of spice and floral elements on the black cherry and plum-suffused aromas. There is almost painful intensity to the chiseled, focused and stony medium weight flavors that coat the palate with dry extract on the youthfully austere, powerful and very serious finish. This is very clearly built to age and a wine that should really not be touched for at least a decade. In a word, terrific.

There is enough reduction to push the underlying fruit to the background for today. The graceful yet precise flavors brim with both underlying tension and minerality and possess that beguiling quality of inner mouth perfume before delivering the best length in the range on the youthfully austere finale. This is very clearly built-to-age and it's going to need it; indeed I doubt that this will arrive at its peak much before it sees its 20th birthday. I would further observe that while this may not be the finest Ducster of the modern era, it should ultimately give both the 1999 and 2005 a run for their money, which indisputably puts it in elite company.
93-96 points
Allen Meadows - BurghoundDark ruby-red but a bit less deeply colored than the Champans. Alluring, expressive aromas of black cherry, minerals, black pepper and spices. Enters with outstanding silky refinement, then shows uncommon saline energy in the mid-palate, with wonderfully tactile flavors of red and black fruits, spices, flowers and minerals. The stunning whiplash of a finish conveys pronounced soil-driven minerality, a sexy suggestion of torrefaction and great length. This wine and the Champans deliver a magical combination of silkiness, density and energy.

It's a superb wine that confirms the serious stature of this vintage chez d'Angerville.

William Kelley - Wine AdvocateBright medium ruby. Brooding aromas of black cherry, blueberry and violet. Dense, sappy Volnay with compelling sweetness to its dark berry fruit. Finishes with dusty, broad tannins and good saline lift. The estate lost 25% of this parcel to frost, but Guillaume d'Angerville told me that the ultimate crop was actually larger than he thought it would be during the summer.

Stephen Tanzer - VinousA background note of menthol sits atop the spicy combination of floral and the pure essence of dark pinot fruit. All wines are unfined and unfiltered to show the true expression of the vineyard. Described as giving it the "full beans", this is the 100% whole bunch version of Timo's trademark Pinot Noir. A wild ride on the Timo train, the Dr Pinot has all the sweet and sour, stalky and spice notes that had everyone swooning when his wines first hit the market.

Estate grown, 100% whole bunches, matured in seasoned hogsheads. A bright, light garnet. A slightly riper version of this always perfumed and seductive wine. Lifted aromas of wild strawberry, rose bush bramble and green peppercorn spice precede the gently sinewy, savoury and very long palate. My advice: drink the Mayer Pinot now and over the next five years and then get stuck into this Dr Mayer Pinot. Drink 2025-2035.

Philip Rich - Halliday's Australian Wine CompanionThe Dr is in town doing house calls. Or some such. All the bunches.
It’s ‘whoa!’ in the green herb, white pepper and mezcal characters! Strap in. Lighter weight, a sluice of red cherry, rose hip cherry, all of this tightly wound with those green herb and peppery notes, skinny in its jive and cinched with ultra fine, silty tannin lending a long, drying pucker post sips. Fragrant, frisky, needs some time to see it elevate, but even now has a slinky swagger that should drag pinotphiles in. Sleek, elegant, personality plus. Drink 2026 - 2036.

All estate grown with 30% whole bunches and matured in 15% new hogsheads. A light, bright ruby red. An opulent, floral and spicy bouquet where you barely detect the stems. Delicious as a young wine; red fruited and with silky, very nicely balanced tannins. Philip Rich - Halliday's Australian Wine CompanionA little Gilbert Gottfried here – fun, edgy, a touch shrill, a bit heightened in energy, but well balanced in the end. Perhaps drinking this wine right now is ‘too soon’ too.
Snappy, tart, tense and bright. Red cherry, cranberry drink, pomegranate juice, big dashes of white pepper, green capsicum, faint game meat leaving a little slosh and softness in the vibrancy inherent here. A sheath of sand-storm tannins lending a little tension, the mainstay that the wine feels tight then a little splash of juice to finish, with some powdery grip helping things out. Part of a new range started with the 2021 vintage, the fruit for this Pinot is purchased from the Lusatia Park vineyard in Woori Yallock, in the volcanic terrains of the Upper Yarra Valley.
Unlike Timo's ‘Mayer’ range, this is a different style of Pinot, somehow in continuity with the Gembrook Hill style (where Timo worked as head of winemaking for a long time). Fruit is all de-stemmed, whole-berry fermented rather than whole-bunch, resulting in a delicate, pure and fragrant expression of Pinot Noir. -

An obsession with a fickle varietal.
Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
