Pinot Noir

While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

This a terrific example of one of the country’s consistently best wines. I find the silken, seamless texture totally seductive. It’s challenging to identify individual flavours because there are so many of them, this wine defines complexity. Floral, herb, berry fruit and an array of hard-to-describe savoury elements suggesting baked earth, wood smoke and the sort of scents you might encounter in sniffing distance of a Turkish spice stall. 13.5% (Screwcap)

Delicious, long and powerful, this is a superb Central Otago Pinot Noir.

Aged for 13 months in French oak of which 22% was new. Great depth of colour displaying a deep dark red core with black tinged edges and a dark red hue. Beautifully scented the highly aromatic nose features perfumed notes of violets, hints of lavender, ripe red and dark cherries as well as plums laced with anise followed by traces of incense, spicy cedar and fresh herbs. Richly fruited with a supple elegance to the textural feel, this outstanding Pinot possesses a power wave of flavour that stretches long onto the finish. Deliciously moreish ripe dark cherry, spicy dark plum and anise flavours flood the mouth with an undercard of well integrated spicy cedar, subtle incense infusions and fresh herb elements. Finishes with great freshness and seamlessly integrated, polished tannins. Exceptionally long aftertaste of spicy ripe dark cherries, plum, anise, spicy cedar and fresh herbs.
    Cellar 6-8 years.

Elegant, fresh and vibrant, this red starts off wonderfully perfumed, with lavender, white pepper and green tea notes that accentuate the purity of the cherry and raspberry flavors. Polished tannins still provide some grip on the finish, where white truffle and forest floor details linger. Drink now through 2032.

This has less charm and more punch than the Cornish Point. Plenty of earthy dark-fruited strength, some bold, darker plum-cherry flavors and quite expansive build into the finish. A full-flavored and assertive pinot noir. Drink now. Screw cap.

Hand-picked fruit from six Yarra Valley sites, all clone MV6. Matured for seven months in barriques and puncheons (12% new). A vibrant cherry red. Brightly fruited and immediately engaging with its aromas of red and black fruits, rose, potpourri and incense. It's bright and crunchy fruited on the palate, too, with lively acidity and gently grippy tannins making for a moreish and refreshing mouthful. Strange to say, but this puts me in mind of some Pinot Noir from days of yore. Like Diamond Valley Close Planted, or something like that. I know, I’m getting on a bit when I say things like that, though I reckon CM would also see the similarity, not least because he’s much older than me. And possibly wiser. And also probably loves this style of Pinot Noir. Spicy, minty, strawberry and autumnal. It’s fresh, crisp and kind of sappy, but in a good way. A bit of tang, some orange zest flavour too, a cool feathering of emery tannin, and a juicy red fruited finish of fine length. Really nice wine. Should age well. Drink 2023-2029+

Hand-picked from a vineyard at Yarra Glen, 30% whole bunch, wild ferment and 8 months in French oak (15% new). Plenty of ripe and almost perfumed cherry-like fruit to be found here, the whole bunch and oak inputs having only a minor say. Label refresh here. 320 dozen produced. Yarra Glen (67%) and Macclesfield. Hand-picked. 67% whole bunch (which looks like the Yarra Glen component, I’d guess).
Raspberry, brown spices, almost chocolaty, with a mint and dried herb perfume. Medium-bodied, graphite tannin, good amount of crunch and savoury spice, rhubarb, cool acidity, generous flavour and a long dry wheaty amaro tinged finale. Earth and grip. A lot of character and interest. And as a closing remark, I really like how emphatic it is through the finish. Drink 2019-2027.

Fin Wines, launched in January 2020 by JonJo McEvoy, Oliver Johns, and Angus Hean, is a fermentation collective based in Dixons Creek, Yarra Valley, on Wurundjeri Country. Focused on producing fresh, fun, and highly drinkable wines, ciders, and piquettes, they use minimal intervention techniques like spontaneous fermentation, no filtering, and minimal additives. The 10-acre vineyard, planted in the early 1990s on grey-red sandy loam over clay, is sustainably farmed to preserve soil and biodiversity. Its mix of south and north-facing slopes benefits from cooling influences from nearby hills.

This 100% Pinot Noir from Coldstream in the Yarra Valley is crafted for a fruit-forward expression. The wine spent 8 days on skins with minimal intervention and just 2 months in barrel to preserve its vibrant early ferment aromatics. Light-bodied with bright acidity, it showcases red berries, blackcurrants, cherries, and a touch of cola nut and licorice, complemented by hints of wild fennel and citrus pith. A fresh, fragrant, and effortless Pinot.

The domaine of Francois Cotat is a tiny 4 hectares, and has been making some of the most exceptional wines of the Loire since 1947. Their success and individuality can be attributed to François' intense passion for creating the finest wine possible and his exceptionally placed vineyards. Prudent viticulture combined with densely planted vines, ultra-low yields and relatively late harvesting produces fantastically flavoursome fruit. Whilst not Biodynamic, Francois uses organic fertilisers and racks according to the phases of the moon. His incredible wines develop with age and, in the best vintages, can be cellared for more than 30 years.

Cotat's rosé is cult and one of a very small group that benefit from (and in some ways demand) aging. Just like Cotat's whites, with age, it's the terroir that comes to dominate the rosé with a singular minerality. There may be a silky texture and gentle floral notes, but it's the stony minerality that defines old Cotat rosé. Sadly, they're as rare as they are beautiful.

Francois Rousset is producing some of the most captivating wines in the Jura right now. Launching his winery in 2006 in the Chateau Chalon appellation, Francois labels his wines as Cotes du Jura since he makes them in a non-oxidative ouillé or topped-up style. Vinified by parcel, the farming is organic-certified with little to no sulphur and bottled unfined and unfiltered.

    Other Reviews....
The 2022 Pinot Noir Cuvée 909 is not the same profile as the 2021, as the years were very different. It's the domaine Pinot Noir and comes from Pinot Droit vines planted in 1998 in the lieu-dit En Beuzard in the neighboring village of Ménetru-le-Vignoble on limestone soils that are not that different from those in Burgundy. It was produced with an old style of winemaking (destemmed) but without using any added sulfur. It fermented with 50% full clusters and matured in a pièce (600 liters) that had been used for Trousseau before for around 18 months. It's a little riper, despite having the same alcohol on the label (13.5%), and there's a touch of meat, iron and earth. It has a medium-bodied to full-bodied palate with grainy tannins and good balance. 5,000 bottles were filled in November 2023. Drink 2024-2029.

The 2022 Pinot Noir Côtes du Jura Cuvée 909 hails from vines planted in 1998. Ripe red fruit jumps out of the glass and mingles with crushed violets and spicy undertones. Medium- to full-bodied and remarkably polished, the 2022 is deliciously juicy yet also downright serious. Bright and fruit-driven on the finish, the Cuvée 909 is a contender for the finest Jura Pinot of the vintage. Drink 2024-2028.

As ever, excellent colour; a serious pinot noir, opening with a perfumed bouquet given an extra dimension with subtle French oak. The palate has striking length and persistence thanks to fine-grained tannins running from start to finish. Could well become spectacular over the next 5+ years - I'd be in no hurry to drink it. A strong red-cherry nose with a deep sense of complexity that is, for now, tightly buried in this young pinot. There is plenty of spice and earthy sous bois to come with some more time. The pedigree is instantly seen on the palate with an enthralling interplay of power and elegance. Long, fresh and pure cherries and red plums fold through layers of fine tannins. Drink in 2023.

A magnificent offering; the fabulously fragrant bouquet shows dark berry aromas with dried herb, warm spice, flint, almond and floral notes, followed by a impeccably focused palate that offers outstanding weight and depth. It is multi-layered and symphonic, as well as firmly structured, promising to evolve graciously. From the Brancott Valley district. At its best: 2020 to 2030. Certified organic.

This is a very strong follow-up to the inaugural 2015 release. Aromas of bright red cherries carry bright, spicy and lightly earthy nuances on the nose. Potent perfume runs with red cherry, just-ripe raspberry, new leather, some char/old spice cupboard scents, all up very pleasing. It’s a standout release. Power, complexity and length. Graphite, black cherry, stewed strawberries and sweet, clovey spice. Woodsmoke. Walnuts. A strong savoury side without it being twiggy or necessarily bitter, though there’s a pleasant suggestion of the latter. It’s the push through the finish that really elevates it. Super. Winemaker Barney Flanders' decision to reclassify his Pinot fruit this year has taken the 2020 release of Le Stagiaire to another level. Fruit that would normally go into his upper tier single vineyard Balnarring Pinot Noir has been moved into this wine, 50% of the blend being drawn from some of the top Merricks blocks. This portion also takes in 15% whole-bunch from the prized Merricks Terre de Feu parcel. The wine was aged for six months on lees, in concrete, foudre and used 300-litre barrels and then bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Semi translucent bright red colour with a light red hue. Very intense, perfumed like aromatics of rose petals, red cherries, winter strawberries and well integrated clove like notes flow out of the glass followed by forest floor, a subtle meatiness and notions of fresh herbs. Light in body and possessing a bright youthful freshness, the palate is decorated with delicious red cherry and strawberry fruits that are gently infused with clove. Vivid acidity underpins the fruit with nuances of fresh herbs, light forest floor and delicate spicy cedar on the back half. Polished tannins. Don’t overthink this. It’s a delicious, well-made and pleasing pinot. Nothing out of place, with a neat combo of florals, red cherries, baking spices galore and some woodsy notes, too. And it's a little autumnal. Some amaro/Angostura bitters pop out, adding a touch of exotica. A neat layer of textural tannins, mouth-watering acidity and refreshment throughout. Drink by 2032.

Comprised of vineyards, cattle pastures and native bush, the Thousand Candles estate stretches over 1100 acres making it one of the biggest land holdings in the Yarra Valley. The vineyard was planted in 1995 and is just over 60 acres in size with a focus on Pinot Noir. Stuart Proud is in charge of the winemaking.
The fruit for this wine was hand picked from select parcels of the estate’s best blocks which have an easterly aspect allowing the vines to avoid the harsh afternoon sun. Fermented in small batches over two weeks with minimal intervention the wine was then matured for 6 months in older French oak barriques and hogsheads.

Powerful, supple and intensely flavoured this is an uber delicious Yarra Valley Pinot Noir.

Semi translucent red colour with dark red toned edges and a light red hue. Highly perfumed and alluring the nose offers up violet, dark cherry, strawberry and rhubarb aromas infused with hints of dried clove. Forest floor and spicy cedar notes also make an appearance. Displaying the varietals trademark power without weight trait and a beautiful supple textural feel, intensely flavoured red to dark cherry and strawberry fruits are layered over a back drop of rhubarb, forest floor, dried herbs and delicate spicy cedar. Founded in 1983, Gembrook Hill is one of the Upper Yarra Valley's benchmark estates, planted on a cool, elevated site with volcanic soils that naturally lend themselves to producing fine-boned, ageworthy wines. Over four decades on, the estate has become a reference point for the region, with wines built on clarity, restraint, and a deep sense of place.

From one of the Yarra Valley’s most distinctive sites, this is a fine-boned expression of Pinot Noir that highlights the precision and longevity for which the estate is known.

Gembrook Hill is a treasure of Australian wine and here, in the glass, we open the trove and its riches are as evident as ever. This release is a beautiful example of what Gembrook Hill does so well: it’s a bit murky, a bit light, a lot composed and a lot persistent. It tastes of undergrowth, strawberries, red cherries and sweet spice, with whispers of mint and cedar as top notes. Tannin is fine-grained and well formed and the aforementioned persistence is of special note. This is an excellent release of Gembrook Hill Pinot Noir. Drink 2026-2033+.

Enchanting the olfactory senses are fragrant aromatics of red cherry, violet and wild strawberry which are followed by subtle clove, forest floor, dried meat and spicy cedar notes. Yes, this is unequivocally Yarra Valley, but it is far more distinctive of Gembrook Hill. It's the prettiness, the aromatic allure, the seemingly gentle palate, yet tannins are silky, the acidity just-so, with every element on the same wavelength. Just as Van Morrison sang: ‘Wavelength. You never let me down, ah no.'

Beautifully round and silky in the mouth, the palate is decorated with delicious red to dark cherry and strawberry fruits which are underscored by toasty cedar, forest floor and spicy dried meat elements. Finishes with good freshness and velvet smooth tannins. Excellent drive with a long elegant aftertaste.

When maybe I’ll have a glass turns into maybe I’ll polish off the bottle.
What I love about this release is the ease at which it paints a complex picture. It hardly seems to be trying and yet graphite, undergrowth, wild flings of herbs, walnut and black cherry flavours march forward. Tannin runs slick and dry, acidity drives through it, flavour is never left behind. It’s a filigreed wine, savoury and autumnal, yet all-the-while it feels composed and complete. Pitch. It’s a wine of perfect pitch. Drink 2021-2030+

Like its I.J.M. sibling, and indeed all of the pinots produced by Gembrook Hill over the years, this is a wine of exquisite purity that has instant appeal for those who understand pinot noir, whether from Australia or Burgundy. It's ready now, and the changes of age will be slow and beneficial for 10 years or more. Drink by 2032.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.

Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
