Pinot Noir

While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

A man of the vineyards, Arnaud Mortet is driven to produce perfect Pinot fruit from meticulously tended vineyards. He is without question one of the finest growers of the entire Côte and as great wines are the products of great fruit, it is no coincidence that he is producing some of the finest wines in Burgundy today. There is no doubt that the wines are more refined than those produced while his father was alive, yet they share the same intensity and potential longevity. Arnaud is continuing Denis' dream of producing more refined wines, openly getting closer stylistically to the wines of his uncle, Charles Rousseau, without sacrificing depth and intensity or consistency across the range.

Les Champonnets, situated on the same line as the Grands Crus and very near to Ruchottes-Chambertin, is tucked up high near the entrance of the Lavaux combe (or valley). Mortet’s parcel here used to make up almost half of his Premier Cru bottling, and 2014 was the first year this parcel was vinified and bottled separately. It comes from a combination of very old vines (60-70 years old) and some younger, at around 30 years of age. The soil is deep, yet with a strong limestone component that shows through in the wine, which is rich and profound, with plush blackberry and floral fruit and loads of spice.

This is Mortet’s ‘super Gevrey’ and comes from a clutch of five brilliantly placed plots that Denis Mortet deliberately chose for the quality of their terroirs and vines. The vineyards include En Motrot, situated between the church and Château de Gevrey-Chambertin close to Clos Saint-Jacques; Au Vellé, very close-by under Petits Cazetiers; Combe-du-Dessus, situated at the top of the Brochon slope just north-east of Gevrey itself; En Champs directly below Gevrey’s Premier Cru Champeaux where the vines here are over 70 years old; and En Dérée, below En Champs on the Brochon border. Only 30% new barrels were used here and 15% whole berries (hand-destemmed).

Here the wood influence is a bit more evident though it stops short of masking the nuance of the spice and earth-inflected aromas of red currant, dark raspberry and forest floor. The rich, full-bodied and powerful flavors possess good verve and detail, all wrapped in a dusty, youthfully austere and sneaky long finish. This is a quality Gevrey villages. Drink 2026+.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Mes Cinq Terroirs unwinds in the glass with a deep bouquet of cherries, cassis, orange rind, rich soil tones and smoke. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a promising sense of structural reserve despite its exuberant core of fruit. This is a fine rendition of Mortet's emblematic communal bottling and vindicates his decision to harvest early.

A blend of 50- to 70-year-old vines from various parcels around Brochon, the 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin "Mes Cinq Terroirs" has a taut, strict bouquet of pixelated red berry fruit laced with crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, superb acidity, a silky-smooth texture and a crystalline finish. Outstanding. Drink 2022 - 2036.

This is now a 30,000 bottle cuvée coming from 5 plots on the Brochon side of the appellation with vines averaging 50 to 60 years old. Impressive dense purple, this has a magical suavity of dark dense fruit with elegance and balance, really classy. I was going to say that Mes Cinq Terroirs was a textbook Gevrey but it is better than that.

The vineyard name, Les Longeroies, probably comes from the French verb longer which means ‘to border’. This makes sense as Longeroies is on the boundary between Marsannay and the next village of Chenôve. It is a star climat of the AOC and has been earmarked for promotion to Premier Cru. Longeroies faces south, and the two Mortet parcels sit mid-slope. One is 50 years old, and the other was planted with Pinot Fin clones in 1992. The aging consisted of 18 months in oak casks, 25% new and the balance in one- and two-year-old wood. Although the prices are now rising, Marsannay remains one of the last great value appellations of the Côte and this is certainly one of its finest examples.

A deft application of wood sets off very ripe yet fresh aromas of plum and dark currants that are also cut with plenty of earth nuances. The sleek, intense and lightly stony medium weight flavors culminate in a delicious and balanced finish that is at once mildly austere and rustic. Drink 2024+.

Bursting with aromas of raspberries, cherries, woodsmoke, rich soil and grilled meats, the 2018 Marsannay Les Longeroies is medium to full-bodied, supple and succulent, with fine tannins and a lively, vibrant core of fruit. This represents a fine introduction to the appellation and to the domaine's style.

The 2018 Marsannay Les Longeroies, matured in 25% new oak, has a well-defined blackberry and raspberry bouquet with veins of blue fruit. The medium-bodied palate offers svelte tannins and fine acidity. Very cohesive, with an elegant finish. Excellent. Drink 2022 - 2032.

Two plots, one 30 year old in pinot fin and a 60 to 70 year old section. Dense rich purple, more stuffing but less immediate bouquet than the Bourgogne. A wealth of fruit, lovely balanced wine with a fine long finish.

Firm reduction dominates the fruit today. Otherwise, and as is usually the case, this is easily the biggest and most powerful wine in the range among the Mortet 1ers with its overtly muscular big-bodied flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the textured, youthfully austere and very firmly structured finish. This is certainly impressive and especially so for the vintage though I find it somewhat more rustic than usual.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques is also performing very well from bottle, unwinding to reveal aromas of wild berries, orange rind, warm spices, raw cocoa, rich soil tones and peonies. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and enveloping, with a fleshy core of fruit that entirely conceals the wine's powdery tannins, ripe acids and a perfumed finish. This is a supremely charming Lavaux Saint-Jacques that will offer a broad drinking window.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru matures in 75% new oak and 100% de-stemmed. It has a crisp and well-defined bouquet with black cherries, raspberry and rose petals that unfurls beautifully with time. The palate is medium-bodied with precise tannins, extremely detailed, not long in the mouth with surfeit freshness and tension, and a touch of white pepper on the finish. Sophisticated and classy.

This is attractively fresh and bright with its broader range of aromatic components that include red currant, cherry, spice and soft floral wisps. There is notably better volume and density to the equally delicious medium weight flavors that conclude in a refreshing and naturally sweet finish. This is almost gulpable today yet it has the underlying material and structure to reward 4 to 6 years of cellaring.

Once again there is a discreet but not invisible touch of wood framing the notably earthier and more deeply pitched aromas of both red and dark currant and forest floor nuances. There is fine intensity and solid concentration to the vibrant middle weight flavors that reflect ample minerality, all wrapped in a focused, complex and lengthy finish that flashes unusually good power for a villages level wine. As it usually is, this is a fine effort and well worth considering.

Tasted from bottle, the 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Mes Cinq Terroirs is showing well, bursting with expressive aromas of sweet berry fruit, plums, orange rind and licorice, framed by a deft touch of classy new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, supple and charming, with succulent acids, ripe and powdery tannins and good depth at the core. The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin "Mes Cinq Terroirs" comes from vineyards in the northern slopes towards Brochon and includes 20% whole bunches and raised in 30% new oak. It offers brambly black fruit on the nose with just a hint of iodine that emerges with aeration. The palate is quite sharp and citric on the entry with compact red berry fruit tinged with cola and balanced. It may be missing the persistence on the finish of the previous two vintages. Fine.

Moderate wood frames ripe, fresh and cool notes of red and dark currant, plum, and earth and leather wisps. There is at once very good richness but also fine delineation to the solidly powerful middle weight flavors that possess good muscle on the youthfully austere, firm, serious and beautifully complex and persistent finale. Aromas of sweet cherries, cassis, rich spices, incense and orange peel introduce the 2017 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy rendition of this bottling, with a deep core of fruit and surprisingly melting tannins. Mortet's evolution in the direction of finesse coupled with the generous vintage has made for a supple, charming Clos de Vougeot that will offer uncharacteristically precocious drinking.

The 2017 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru includes 30% whole bunches this year and matures in 75% new oak. It has a very pure, almost candied bouquet with strawberry tart, raspberry preserve and pressed rose petal aromas that are neatly entwined with the new wood. The palate is medium-bodied with smooth tannin, orange pith and brown spices infusing the layers of red fruit. Maybe it just misses a little personality compared to some of Mortet’s other 2017s, but it is still very well balanced and stylish.

Pungent aromas are composed by notes of reduction and wood toast at present. There is excellent volume to the sleek, concentrated and more powerful flavors that flash a subtle minerality on the driving, firm and austere but not really rustic finish. At least some patience required.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champonnet 1er Cru is completely de-stemmed and matures in around 60% new oak. It has a very well defined bouquet with more red than black fruit, hints of lavender and pot pourri, vigorous and open. The palate is very well balanced with a lightly spiced opening, quite sappy in the mouth with a juicy and expressive finish. There is a sense of joie-de-vivre in this wine already and I hope that will be translated into bottle.

This used to be part of the 1er cru blend, separated out in 2015 but not ‘16. Light to medium purple, a slight toasty reduction. Ripe cherry and strawberry notes, the reduction continues, good wine again but not magisterial. Lovely sweet red fruit finish with just enough acidity.

This too is strongly reduced. The medium weight and lively flavors possess a comparatively refined mouthfeel and plenty of minerality on the firmer if less muscular finish where a touch of wood toast can be found. This too will require at least some patience and reward up to 15 years of it.

Typically one of the broadest-shouldered wines in the cellar, the 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Champeaux was lightly reduced on the day that I tasted it, unwinding in the glass to reveal plenty of red-black fruit and savory nuance. On the palate, the wine was easier to read, displaying a medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated profile, with excellent amplitude, juicy acids and a long, delineated finish. It's a definite success.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux 1er Cru comes from 60 to 100-year old vines, matures in 70% new oak with 30% whole bunches. That whole bunch component is very expressive on the nose: quite tertiary and stemmy in style, well defined and with a noticeable degree of transparency and airiness. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, well balanced with that stemmy character prevalent throughout this Champeaux. Maybe that just overrides the terroir expression on the finish? Hence my more cautious score at the moment.

Fine rich purple, as last year the bouquet is a cut above all the others. Definitely a whole bunch effect with 40% here, the fruit dances across the palate. While there may be much less density than the sensational 2016, this it is completely lovely nonetheless.

A super-fresh if somewhat brooding nose is comprised by notes of essence of red pinot fruit, spice and lavender that really helped from being in a decanter for 30 minutes first. The succulent and reasonably concentrated medium weight flavors exude a subtle minerality before concluding in a compact, powerful, complex and impressively persistent finish. This seems to have put on weight since I last reviewed it and I like the overall sense of harmony and balance. The 2017 Volnay Les Santenots-du-Milieu 1er Cru was opened by Dominique Lafon just because he wanted to compare with the ensuing two vintages. Who was I to stop him? It is very different in style from those vintages: redder fruit, more transparency, charming, and it wears its heart on its sleeve. The palate is full of slightly peppery red berry fruit, saline and spicy with good grip and a long raspberry and wild strawberry finish. So unbelievably drinkable, even at this early stage you’ll finish bottle. Drink 2023-2040.

Dominique thinks this may be THE vintage of the recent past, even at 55 hl/ha. This view may be conditioned by having just lived through making the third hot dry vintage in a row. The 2017 may be a fraction lighter in colour, but it is really haunting in its fruit, superbly balanced, medium density, a crisp tannin or two right at the back and now here comes the fruit again. I see what Dominique means – certainly if you want to drink in the medium-term future.

The 2015 Clos de Tart Grand Cru is a monumental young wine, opening in the glass with a brooding bouquet of wild berries, peony, orange rind, licorice, espresso roast and spice. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, powerful and multidimensional, with an enormous core of vibrant fruit, an ample chassis of fine tannins and a beautiful line of acidity. While the vintage has brought an extra dimension of concentration and power to this Clos de Tart, it remains wonderfully controlled through the long, palate-staining finish, and the terroir—including its proximity to Bonnes Mares—is front and center. With his first solo vintage at Clos de Tart, Jacques Desvauges has evidently hit the ground running. Cropped at 22 hectoliters per hectare, vinified with 40% whole cluster, and aged in 80% new wood.

Deep, bright red with ruby tones. Deeper and darker on the nose than the young 2016, offering hints of black raspberry, medicinal cherry, mocha and crushed rock; seems already to be closing down. Plump and thick in the style of the year; superripe but not at all cooked. The chewy flavors of dark fruits, stone, mocha and brown spices convey strong mineral-driven energy for the vintage, as well as the sheer dry extract to support the wine's serious tannic clout. This hugely concentrated wine spreads out horizontally to saturate the palate on the powerful, slowly mounting finish, which leaves behind an impression of medicinal reserve. Winemaker Devauges is not convinced that this wine will shut down in bottle "because of the quality of the grapes and the tannins," but I think it's inevitable. He vinified with an average of 40% whole clusters in 2015 and did just three punchdowns during the course of three weeks of maceration. By the way, this wine has a slightly lower pH than the 2016: 3.6, vs. 3.7.

Moderate wood frames very ripe liqueur-like aromas of plum, cassis, floral and ample spice and earth nuances. There is excellent richness to the opulent yet relatively refined big-bodied flavors that exhibit a subtle minerality on the powerful, mouth coating and driving finish that possesses outstanding complexity and persistence. There is a hint of warmth but overall this is quite well-balanced and the length is remarkable. My sense is that while this will age effortlessly for decades, it should not be particularly difficult young.

From the three youngest parcels in the clos, the 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis La Forge de Tart 1er Cru has a fragrant blackberry and briar bouquet plus light pressed iris aromas. The palate is medium-bodied, displaying touches of licorice on the entry, and nicely balanced with hints of graphite toward the finish. Fine.

An attractively discreet application of wood sets off the ripe and very fresh aromas of various dark berries that are nuanced by hints of earth and violet. The sleek and seductively textured medium-bodied flavors possess good intensity and a lovely mouthfeel, all wrapped in a solidly complex and sneaky long finish. This is both richer and denser than its 2017 counterpart if not quite as energetic. Still, it's really quite good and would make a good mid-term cellaring choice.

It’s always a treat to taste a wine from Vosne, but our judges look at such wines against their peers, so they have to be good to make progress … and very good indeed to reach Best In Show. This deep, youthful Premier Cru Malconsorts thrilled every judge who tried it. Not only does it encapsulate the appeal of its village with its velvet-textured opulence and ample raspberry and black-cherry fruits, but its fleet-footed vivacity and deft yet firm structure underlines what a great vintage 2019 is. The wine is delicious now, but the potential of this vineyard which sits alongside La Tache is such that those with a chance to cellar a few bottles for their later years won’t regret it.

Here too there is enough wood to notice but not to intrude on the exceptionally spicy and overtly floral-suffused nose of dark currant and plum. There is outstanding intensity, muscle and power to the broad-shouldered flavors that brim with both minerality and dry extract on the sappy, mouth coating, robust and youthfully austere finish that goes on and on. This is excellent and worth checking out. Drink 2037+.

The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts 1er Cru was harvested on different days, as Bichot owns sites on varied soil profiles within the vineyard. Initially closed, it opens nicely to offer dark cherries, bergamot and tea leaf notes. The palate is very harmonious with good backbone, grippy tart red fruit and a mineral-driven, quite sturdy finish. Excellent. Drink 2023 - 2038.

18th September, though I am told it is rare to pick both their plots on the same day. Very dense vibrant purple. Spending time on the nose, which shows some class, but it is the power, which kicks in, the sort of lively cherries, which can come with whole bunch. Really fine sensual finish, very long too. Shows the value of this terroir.

A restrained, cool and pure nose features notes of herbal tea, spice, earth, red currant and a whiff of the sauvage. The focused, detailed and punchy middle weight flavors possess a fleshy mid-palate yet the stunningly long finish is youthfully austere, compact and linear. As such this delicious but tightly wound effort will also need at least some bottle age. In a word, excellent.

Aromas of cassis, wild berries and rich soil mingle with savory nuances of grilled game bird, dark chocolate spices and smoky new oak in a complex bouquet, introducing the 2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Cras, a medium to full-bodied wine with good depth and concentration at the core, structured around a firm chassis of chewy tannin that will likely resolve considerably by the time is bottled. The raw materials are present and the balance is excellent, but the wine's structure was hard to read when I tasted it.

This too is really quite pretty and pure with its relatively high-toned aromas of various flowers, essence of red cherry and soft earth wisps. The 2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos des Grandes Vignes Rouge was showing well, unfurling in the glass with notes of dark plums, incense, dark chocolate and spices, framed by a generous application of smoky new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny, with a decidedly elegant profile, its supple tannins cloaked in succulent fruit. Parts of this 1.12-hectare vineyard has been replanted, but Liger-Belair told me that he will use the young vines to produce a Nuits-Saint-Georges Village for sale to French restaurants until they are sufficiently mature to be included in the blend.

The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Grand Vignes Rouge 1er Cru, which contains some whole cluster fruit, has an earthier bouquet than the Aux Cras, and is perhaps a little more introverted at this early juncture. The palate is beautifully balanced with silky-smooth tannin, a subtle lactic note in the midpalate and hints of dark chocolate toward the caressing finish. This will require three or four years in bottle and then should drink well for another 20 years.

After much hesitation, they decided to produce a 100% Pinot Noir cuvée for the first time in 2018, made mostly from their Clos St-Laurent parcel located behind the winery, at an elevation of approximately 340–380 m. The soil is made of fallen rocks (éboulis calcaires) of Bajocian limestone over grey marls and the vines are between 10 and 45 years old. In 2019, ageing was in burgundian barrels because of the small yields. No new oak. Bottling took place at the end of August 2019. This vintage is 100% from Clos St-Laurent.

Pale cherry red. Intense and reviving aroma of ripe little red berries, red cherry, cranberry, plus a hint of red plum and spice. Just as intense and refreshing on the palate, this is vibrant, slightly wild alpine Pinot Noir. The tannins are extremely fine but sufficient to keep the fruit in tight shape and become more chewy with the second sip. Refined and long and likely to age well with such perfect balance, the fruit sweetness comes full circle on the finish. Drink 2022 - 2032.

Domaine du Pélican are based in Montigny-les-Arsures near Arbois in the Jura and was started in 2012 by Guillaume d’Angerville of Domaine Marquis d’Angerville in Volnay, Burgundy, and François Duvivier, régisseur at Domaine Marquis d’Angerville. The Domaine farms high quality terroirs located in and around the city of Arbois. The plots are among Jura’s finest, the very best being En Barbi and Grand Curoulet. Terroirs here are a mix of marly clay and gravels with varying exposures from north to south, are even more complex than in Burgundy. Whilst a broadly Burgundian approach is employed to wine-making, there is no doubting the individuality and Jurassien personality of the wines. The d’Angerville approach in the cellar has always been light-touch, one which is toned down even more for Domaine du Pélican, little new oak is used and élévage is shorter, lasting twelve months as opposed to eighteen in Volnay. Tanks and foudres are employed for ageing the reds, 500 litre casks for the Savagnin and traditional Burgundian barriques for the Chardonnay. The whites are both “topped up” as opposed to the more common oxidative Jura method.

The 2018 Arbois Pinot Noir is the first Pinot Guillaume d'Angerville made at Domaine du Pélican. Beautifully lifted in the glass, with effusive aromatics, the 2018 is an absolute delight to taste. Crushed red berries, blood orange, cinnamon and rose petal all grace a Pinot that impresses for its exquisite balance and total class. A whole range of bright, saline notes extends the finish while adding notable vibrancy. I can't wait to see how it ages.

This is the first vintage in which they have produced a 100% Pinot, ‘after much hesitation’. The fruit is mostly from their Clos St-Laurent parcel behind the winery, at an elevation of approximately 340–380 m. No stems. The soil is made of fallen rocks (scree) of Bajocian limestone over grey marls and the vines are 10–45 years old. 60% aged in barrel (none new), 40% in tank. Bottled August 2019.
Light cherry red. Delicate, fresh and scented. Hint of orange, even a little floral, as well as cranberry – ie tart fruit not strawberry red fruit though it is somehow both tart and sweet. Silky, fresh and incredibly long. So much life and energy and elegance with delicious sweet-sour cherry on the palate. A wild, exhilarating freshness.

The 2021 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from the lieu-dit of "Les Charmes". This cuvée was heavily reduced on the nose, so skipping past that, the palate is juicy on the entry, with fine acidity. However, I feel it does not possess the complexity and mineral-drive as the superb Aux Combottes this year, as if to say, "you take the honours". Drink 2024-2034.

The ripe blackberry fruit aromas of the Dujac Charmes-Chambertin are almost impossibly seductive, with hints of earth and spice. There is also a rewarding density here as the plump fruit continues on the palate, supported by silky yet sustaining tannins that carry the wine to a lingering finish. This wine makes one stand up and take notice with its lovely cherry/floral fruit expression and plenty of depth on the nose. The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Combottes 1er Cru is showing a lot of promise. The floral element that I noticed from barrel has become more accentuated now that the wine is in bottle and marries beautifully with the black cherry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. Just a little gaminess comes through with a fleshy finish that disguises the structure underneath. There is a pinch of cracked black pepper on the aftertaste. Excellent.

An admirably discreet application of wood frames the very pretty and equally perfumed nose that flashes ripe notes of cassis, red currant and an impressive range of spice and floral elements. The medium weight flavors are not especially dense though the mid-palate texture is refined and lilting, all wrapped in a dusty, youthfully austere and complex finish. The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts 1er Cru has a subtle Asian influence on the nose, offering well-defined aromas of hoisin and wet limestone. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity, quite saline in the mouth, with a sense of symmetry on the finish. Simply a class act.

Here too a background application of wood can be found on the spicier and even more floral nose of liqueur-like red and dark raspberry, sandalwood and exotic tea scents. The beautifully well-detailed and more mineral-driven flavors possess a super-sleek texture before concluding in a dusty, youthfully austere and very firm finale. This is lovely but in contrast to the Combottes which might reasonably be approachable on the younger side, this is one to put away for at least a decade.

Fine complete purple, a little oak shows on the nose. Some whole bunches Very juicy and also very well balanced, a classic expression of pure pinot. I love the softly scented ripe strawberry finish to this which extends beautifully.

The 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis Village is showing well in bottle, mingling notions of ripe blackberries, exotic spices, orange rind and sweet soil tones in an inviting bouquet. Medium to full-bodied, lively and fleshy, with fine depth at the core and youthful back-end grip, it should evolve very nicely in the cellar.

The 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis Village is a cuvée that I tasted just after racking at the domaine so I deferred scoring. Now in bottle, it has a juicy crushed strawberry and cranberry bouquet with light incense aromas. The palate is smooth on the entry. Plenty of brambly red fruit is laced with sage and a pinch of sea salt. The stems impart a pleasant tertiary note on the finish that becomes spicier with time.

The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru was showing a little reduction on the nose but there is plenty of attractive black currant and boysenberry fruit underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, fine acidity, great mineralité and a precise, edgy finish that is quite Mazoyères in style. Great potential, but it will need some time.

A ripe, fresh and unusually elegant, indeed even perfumed, nose displays notes of black raspberry, cassis and plenty of floral influences. There is both good focus and density to the suave yet quite powerful and vibrant medium weight flavors that culminate in a mildly warm, compact and rustic finale. This is both serious and firmly structured so once again, patience advised.

Dense black colour with a luxurious Charmes nose, probably from new oak, certainly gives it a firm framework which actually works to its advantage. The wood shows up at the back but it is the way this sample is showing. Will work very well in due course.

Unfurling in the glass with aromas of sweet berry fruit, dark chocolate, rose petals, orange rind, burning embers and spices, the 2018 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is full-bodied, layered and muscular, with a deep, concentrated and multidimensional core that's framed by rich, powdery tannins and impressively lively acids. The 2018 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is probably now just a step ahead of the Clos Saint-Denis on the nose: stunning violet-infused red fruit with veins of blueberry that unfold exquisitely. The palate is silky smooth in texture, lightly spiced with a cornucopia of mineral-driven red fruit that convey just the right degree of flamboyance. Outstanding.

Discreet but not imperceptible wood and menthol characters set off very ripe liqueur-like aromas of black raspberry, cassis, floral and plenty of sauvage nuances. The sleekly textured and impressively intense large-scaled flavors possess evident power on the dusty, serious and palate coating finish that is definitely quite grippy and a bit coarse, indeed even a bit chewy. I like the overall fruit/tannin/sap balance and while it will take extended bottle age, this borderline massive wine should eventually mature into a magnificent CdlR.

Dense purple hugely enthusiastic nose, with class, some stems and perfectly judged fruit ripeness. We had the discussion about blueberry fruit in Clos de la Roche. This fills out nicely behind, this is really distinguished, a great wine in the making. I love the way the stems blend in and there is also an endearing dusting of cocoa powder at the back. Balanced and long.

The 2018 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is blessed with one of my favorite aromatics from Dujac this year, featuring black cherries, raspberry, crushed stone and pressed iris flower, all quite restrained for a Bonnes-Mares but showing outstanding focus. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannins, a fine line of acidity and a strict and quite linear finish that lingers long in the mouth. Outstanding.

Soft reduction is enough to push the underlying fruit and floral scents to the background. Otherwise there is really lovely energy to the cool and restrained yet muscular medium-bodied flavors that are compact, firm and a bit drying on the short finish. Based on the structure, this may well be a fruit/tannin race as this ages and overall I found this to be well below its usual excellent level.

Dense imperial purple, with a nose that takes coaxing but is remarkably complex. Some quality oak behind this summer pudding of a wine. It is going to be a Rubens beauty in due course. Bonnes Mares seems to fall into two camps: those that got hit by the heat and drought and those that blossomed. This is in the latter category.

Rich purple, glowing purple with a really sensual nose, exceptional density of sweet raspberry fruit, with a little bit of new oak showing. Some dry tannins – partly attributable to the principal vineyard site, Les Drazées - but this marries very well. A burly but still fine Chambolle.

The 2018 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru builds on the promise that it showed in bottle. it has a sublime bouquet with blackberry and wild strawberry, ground gravel and orange rind. The palate is medium-bodied with smooth and very supple tannins, a touch of brown spice infusing the fleshy red fruit with a long and tender finish that has shaken off the austerity it showed out of barrel. Superb.

This is actually quite aromatically similar to the Clos de la Roche but a touch more elegant with its greater emphasis on spice and floral influences. There is excellent volume to the seductively textured, fleshy and succulent medium weight flavors that firm up immediately on the super-sleek and refined finish. This needs to develop more depth but there is so much underlying material, and the structure to complement it, that it should gradually develop. Like the Clos de la Roche, the tannins are very prominent, so patience is once again strongly suggested.

Ripe purple, for me this does not quite sing through so much as Clos de la Roche. Reserved but suggestive of a very pure clear and balanced fruit. Barrel gives a lactic element. Good acidity. This is biding its time but I suspect it is all there. Jeremy Seysses is a fan. Another barrel was more expressive, with a sumptuous raspberry fruit that is not cooked at all, and good acidity. Very promising.

The 2018 Echézeaux Grand Cru had been racked the day prior to my visit. That said, the bouquet is very well defined, offering black cherries, raspberry, rosemary and pressed rose petal aromas that blossom with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannins, good depth and precision, revealing bitter cherry and a touch of balsamic toward the finish. Very good potential.

The wood treatment is more evident though it certainly doesn't intrude on the exceptionally spicy and very floral aromas that reflect notes of cassis, plum, exotic tea and a touch of violet. The medium-bodied flavors possess a seductive and succulent mid-palate that contrasts markedly with a powerful but grippy and slightly drying finish. Again, the open question is whether this will eventually harmonize?

Dujac's 2017 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is more reserved that the Clos Saint-Denis, unwinding in the glass with scents of red berries, plums, orange rind, cinnamon, peonies and sweet soil tones. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, serious and layered, with muscular structure, lively acids and a long, perfumed finish. The average age of the Seysses' 1.95ha holdings in the Clos de la Roche are slightly older than those of neighbouring Clos St-Denis. Using fruit from five main parcels, it's a very complete, self-confident wine with good density and concentration, sappy, spicy undertones, fine-grained fruit and tannins, and a very long, tapering finish.

This is also markedly floral in character with additional breadth from the impressively pure combination of red cherry, currant, leather and a whiff of the sauvage along with a touch of oak. The beautifully energetic and detailed flavors are much finer than usual thanks mostly to the ultra-fine grain of the supporting tannins supporting the austere, serious and compact finish. This is a Dujac CdlR of refinement rather than one of imposing size and weight but even so, it is clearly constructed for the longer haul and it wouldn't surprise me if it needed 20+ years to fully mature.

An exceptionally pretty and, similar to the Malconsorts, somewhat sweet nose combines notes of lavender, rose petal, violet, red currant and a whiff of orange pekoe tea. There is good if not special mid-palate density to the overtly intense flavors that terminate in a dusty, austere and reasonably powerful finish where the tannins are a bit spiky. Domaine Duroche is one of the brightest stars to appear in the Burgundy landscape over recent years, and with numerous comparisons to Domaine Rousseau the wines are now incredibly hard to come by. While the name is relatively new to the world, the family have been making wine in Gevrey Chambertin since 1953, and early on they aquired fantastic plots of Gevrey villages, premier cru and Grand Cru including Chambertin Clos de Beze. The wines are incredibly pure, have excellent concentration and depth, and show a fantastic translation of site.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Jeunes Rois has turned out very nicely in bottle, mingling aromas of sweet berry fruit with hints of licorice, wilted rose petals, forest floor and orange rind. Medium-bodied and supple, it's bright and enveloping, with lovely acids and melting tannins. As I've observed before, this cuvée derives from a parcel planted in 1953 that tends to produce lots of small, "millrandé" berries.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Jeunes Roi, which is completely de-stemmed, is tightly wound on the nose, quite strict and almost Morey-like in style. The palate is medium-bodied and delivers very pure, almost crystalline tart red fruit with a touch of white pepper toward the composed, persistent finish. Excellent.

All is right here, Pierre feels, magnificent plants, a great place in which he is always happy to be working. Never any rotten fruit, always good acidity, and does not suffer from vintage extremes. The vines were planted in 1952 and made apart since 2005. Always around 30 hl/ha. Glowing very dense purple, the nose shows infinite class in the glass and there is an explosion of ripe but fresh fruit. This transcends its appellation. A huge volume of fruit to enjoy here!

Aromas of dark berry fruit, cheeries, woodsmoke, and forest floor introduce the 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaut Saint-Jacques, a medium to full-bodied, elegant and enveloping wine that's fine-boned, lively and delicately extracted, exemplifying the Duroché style.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaut Saint-Jacques 1er Cru, which comes from six parcels, delivers one of the purest and most mineral-driven of Duroché’s aromatics this year, beautifully defined and resolutely classic in style. The palate is well balanced and rounded in the mouth, although I prefer the Champeaux this year, since this just feels a little smudged at present. Let’s see how it develops once in bottle. Around 18 barrels produced.

Rich dark purple. The nose has a huge volume of fruit on it too, while the cool fresh air has kept the balance. This makes for a more complex nose, with a superb weight of sweet dark cherry fruit at the back and a little spicy mineral tingle. Maturity and ethereal at the time. Very special. As the French would say, digeste, which does not translate so well into English.

Le Clos is followed by the 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin En Champ, from a parcel planted between 1969 and 1973 on the Brochon side of the appellation where soils are stonier. Exhibiting aromas of cherries, cassis, forest floor and truffles, it's medium to full-bodied and a bit more tangy and structured, with good length and definition on the finish.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Champ shows a little more amplitude than the regular Gevrey Village. Perfumed wilted rose petal scents and crushed stone infuse the transparent red fruit on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with a crunchy opening. A brittle-boned Gevrey (and I write that in a positive sense) with a stony, mineral-driven finish. Great persistence here. Superb.

Classy dense purple, with a little touch of reduction. Super-succulent with an intensity at the back of the palate, specifically dark raspberry along with the more characteristic strawberry fruit, and a really long, finely balanced finish. This is exceptional for village Gevrey. I love the finish.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.

Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
