Pinot Noir

While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

A pungent nose is composed mostly of wood toast and reduction. Otherwise there is excellent precision to the rich, intense and surprisingly mineral-driven big-bodied flavors that are shaped by firm but ripe tannins and outstanding length on the linear, austere and powerful finish. This beautifully complex and quite firmly structured effort possesses plenty of muscle and very fine development potential. Drink 2039+.

From 104-year-old vines that are still productive, the 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Les Mazoyères Grand Cru includes 100% whole bunches. It might well possess my pick of the bouquets from Vougeraie, offering vibrant red berry fruit infused with lovely incense and blood orange scents. The harmonious palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, well-judged acidity and beautiful balance. Very persistent in the mouth. This is an excellent Charmes-Chambertin. Drink 2024 - 2048.

Ancient vines which are still in great condition, so the fruit can take 100% whole bunch vinification. Glowing mid purple. The nose is just sensational, sweetly refined yet precisely defined. The floral side of cherry. So pretty, yet with depth as well, gorgeous weight to this, the roses and raspberries return behind. Marvellous!

Pungent aromas of wood and reduction overshadow everything but a hint of violet. More interesting are the wonderfully refined medium weight flavors that possess both fine cut and minerality before culminating in a chiseled and sneaky long finish that is firm but not so much so that this couldn't be approached after a few years of bottle age. Excellent quality here for a villages level wine. Drink 2027+.

A blend of several parcels including two declassified Premier Crus, the 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Village is matured with 20% whole bunch. The nose was showing some reduction, although there seems to be plenty of dark berry fruit here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, nicely judged acidity, a rounded texture and a silky-smooth finish. This is a well-crafted Chambolle Village. Drink 2022 - 2032.

The blend includes 1ers Crus Gruenchers and Baudes. Delicious mid purple with real energy. The nose fills out more than many of its predecessors, in a fine deep raspberry style. Excellent balancing acidity, a Chambolle of charm and elegance.

Not surprisingly this is less aromatically expressive today with its elegant and super-fresh if restrained array of various ripe dark berries, violet, lavender, exotic tea and impressive range of spices. There is equally good volume, power and muscle to the full-bodied flavors that brim with minerality on the explosively long and impeccably well-balanced finish. This is a very serious and stunningly good Musigny of lace and grace that is indisputably built-to-age so plenty of patience strongly advised. In a word, magnificent.

The beautiful 2018 Musigny Grand Cru soars from the glass with notes of violets, rose petals, raspberries and blood orange. On the palate, it's full-bodied, layered and racy, with fine tannins and terrific intensity, though it's less overtly muscular at this stage than the blockier Bonne Mares. This, too, is very promising.

The 2018 Musigny Grand Cru is 100% whole-bunch fruit and comprises three barrels this year. It has considerably more intensity on the nose compared to the Bonnes-Mares, featuring blackberry, raspberry and light briar scents, hints of tangerine and a splash of soy. The medium-bodied palate offers supple tannin, fine acidity and a fleshy texture, although it does not possess the complexity and breeding of previous Musignys I have tasted from the domaine. A lovely wine, albeit one that I would broach earlier than others.

100% whole bunch. Gorgeous glowing purple, explosive perfumed grapes, dark cherry, ripe raspberry, something of all the sensual red fruits. The rose bush is in evidence too. Still quite a sense of delicacy on the palate, a welcome touch of acidity, this is very fine but not quite the intensity of some Musigny examples.

A much more subtle though not invisible touch of oak surrounds the even more floral-inflected aromas of blue berry liqueur, anise, tea and newly turned earth. There is outstanding volume and mid-palate concentration thanks to the abundant dry extract that imparts a seductive quality to the mid-palate that contrasts considerably with the very, very structured and hugely long and powerful finish. This is an absolute knockout and would be a candidate for the Bonnes Mares of the vintage.

One of the highlights of the range is the 2018 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru, a striking wine that offers up aromas of wild berries, rose petals, grilled squab and burning embers. On the palate, it's full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with refined tannins but serious depth and structure. This is a muscular wine from Domaine de la Vougeraie, and it will prove long lived.

The 2018 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru comes from three parcels, two up on the terraces on terre blanche soils and one on terre rouge_, from mainly 65-year-old vines and using 90% whole bunch. It has a crisp bouquet with touches of dark chocolate and tobacco infusing the black fruit, becoming earthier with continued aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, supple tannins matched by a keen thread of acidity. This feels gentle and approachable for a Grand Cru, and quite focused, with a lilting finish. Fine.

Fine brisk purple colour. A heady sensual nose, more fruit than whole bunch. Perhaps the most sensual perfume of them all. The fruit skips daintily across the palate, bolstered by excellent structure as much from the stems as anything, then a welcome point of acidity at the back. Brilliantly persistent. Really expressive and will not need to be kept for too long before it can be broached.

The 2014 Charmes-Chambertin les Mazoyères Grand Cru includes 80% whole cluster fruit this year, a high percentage due to the age of the vines planted in 1902. There is fine delineation here, precise black cherry and cranberry scents with a touch of cold granite. It is a nose that demands respect, deservedly so. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, supple black and red fruit, very pure and smooth with a graceful, marmalade-tinged finish that lingers. This should grow up to be a very seductive, comely Charmes-Chambertin with a long future ahead.

Neal Martin - Robert Parker Wine Advocate #222 (Dec 2015)

A beautifully complex nose offers up notes of red currant, blue pinot fruit, plum and plenty of pungent earth nuances that are trimmed in just enough wood to notice. The velvety yet strikingly intense flavors brim with sap that renders the mid-palate more approachable though it seems blatantly clear from the very firm and robust finish that this distinctly serious effort is going to require plenty of cellar time before it arrives at its apogee. In sum, this hugely persistent effort is first-rate.

Healthy dark red. Very ripe aromas of blackberry, blueberry and licorice. The richest and largest-scaled of these 2014s to this point, displaying very concentrated but primary flavors of medicinal black cherry, blackberry, menthol and minerals. Big, dusty tannins are nicely supported by brooding black fruits on the very long, rising finish. The grapes here are always affected by millerandage and there are rarely any bad berries, Vincent told me, adding that this cuvée is always the easiest to vinify as well as "our most concentrated wine." This vineyard is the source of Domaine de la Vougeraie's massale selection for replanting.

This is also firmly reduced and impossible to assess the nose. The mouthfeel of the slightly more concentrated flavors is sleeker still with excellent intensity and plenty of minerality on the compact and more structured finale that is markedly austere. This is a wine to buy and forget you own it because even though the dense but fine tannins are well-integrated, this is definitely in need to a long snooze in a cool cellar. Drink through 2035+.

The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts Cuvée Christiane 1er Cru is 80% whole cluster, very different in aromatic profile to the regular cuvée, more ferrous with hints of red pepper infusing the red and black fruit. The palate is very well-defined and comparing side-by-side, this conveys more energy and tension than the regular cuvée, almost with greater precision towards the finish. Very long and tender, this is a marvellous Vosne-Romanée for long-term ageing. Closure: Diam. Drink 2026-2055.

Glowing rich purple, and here the bouquet is much more like normal. 80% whole bunch. 13.3%. This has the flowing sense of majesty, along with the firmer finish, but here the fruit swarms all over the back end. Very complete, very fine, luxury without vulgarity. And excellent persistence.

The 2019 Pommard Les Rugiens 1er Cru has the finest bouquet of the four Pommards tasted, the 100% whole cluster seamlessly integrated into the more black than red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip on the entry, classic in style, with touches of Earl Grey infusing the finish. Cohesive and very persistent, this is an excellent and quite noble Les Rugiens. Drink 2024-2045.

This comes from the plot just north of that belonging to the Hospices de Beaune, and has been vinified as 100% whole cluster. Dark purple with a lighter rim. Seamless perfect ripeness of fruit. Then a little oak sweetness behind, but builds up beautifully to a really long, high class, ripe summer pudding finish.

This is also quite firmly reduced and revealing nothing at present. On the palate though the slightly bigger flavors possess only a bit more volume but notably more power and particularly so on the even longer though not necessarily more complex finale. The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts Cuvée Christiane 1er Cru is whole cluster fruit and has a touch more intensity on the nose, while the fruit is a little darker: bilberry and blackberry, plus touches of violet petals. The medium-bodied palate is rounded with a refined opening, a smooth texture and good grip. Plenty of freshness here, and then the structure synonymous with Malconsorts kicks in on the finish. Superb. Drink 2025-2048.

100% whole cluster, 60% new wood. The Christiane bottling from the part of Malconsorts, which thinks it should have been La Tâche tends to be a super-sensual version of the vineyard, and do it is again. Rich dark purple in colour, the sensuality in 2019 is shown as very dark fruit. Malconsorts can carry this level of deep ripe fruit adequately, but the power may be smothering some of the éclat, which this wine typically offers.

This is less obviously floral in character though this element is still quite prominent on the discreet spicy aromas of plum, dark raspberry and sandalwood nuances. There is an equally sleek mouth feel to the broad-shouldered and muscular flavors that possess an exquisite sense of underlying tension and plenty of minerality, all wrapped in a firm, cool, linear and built-to-age finale. Bright, dark red. Knockout musky but backward nose combines raspberry, flinty minerality and truffley earth. Very concentrated, mineral-driven wine with a restrained sweetness and complex soil tones to its pungent flavors of red cherry and raspberry. Suave and juicy but a bit youthfully imploded, finishing with serious, noble tannins. Already quite smooth but it would be criminal not to lay this down for at least a few years.

The 2013 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru les Malconsorts appeared very closed and unresponsive on the nose, a little subdued when compared to the Corton Clos du Roi ’13 alongside. Then it begins to wake up with blackberry, cranberry and raspberry preserve that blossoms with each encouraging swirl. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, supple and rounded in the mouth, exerting a gentle grip and a long finish that belies the backbone. This is very fine, although as I remarked at the time, I feel that there is a clear difference between this and the "Christianne" cuvée this year. Drink 2017 - 2030.

He is without question one of the finest growers of the entire Côte and as great wines are the products of great fruit, it is no coincidence that he is producing some of the finest wines in Burgundy today. There is no doubt that the wines are more refined than those produced while his father was alive, yet they share the same intensity and potential longevity. Once again there is a pronounced floral influence on the pretty and layered blend of various dark berries, anise, the sauvage and the barest touch of wood. There is both fine volume and intensity to the delineated medium-bodied flavors that deliver excellent length on the youthfully austere finale. The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin "Mes Cinq Terroirs" possesses darker fruit than the Cuvée de Très Vieilles Vignes, blackberry commingled with bilberry and briary, more sous-bois characteristics and a very light slate-like aroma. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins. This feels very harmonious with an almost satin-like texture, gentle grip with superb tension on the finish. This has always been one of Mortet's best "entry-level" cuvées and this has real class and pixelation. Give it 2-3 years in bottle for it to show its best. Wonderful. Drink 2023-2038.

All the vines are at the northern end of the appellation, from outside the winery through to Brochon. This emblematic cuvée sees 25% new wood and one third whole bunch vinification. Dense purple, with a reserved nose, which is biding its time, nonetheless suggesting that all is in place. The fruit profile sits perfectly on the cusp of red and black, with a touch of liquorice, excellent length, and an admirable finish. The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Champeaux unwinds in the glass with aromas of sweet red berries, peonies, orange rind, forest floor and rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and perfumed, it's deep and layered, with lively acids, melting tannins and a long, saline finish. It's a concentrated, seamless wine that will offer a broad drinking window. Drink 2025 - 2050.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux 1er Cru does not quite have the complexity of the Lavaux on the nose, but it is certainly intense with blackberries, wild hedgerow and touches of salted liquorice developing in the glass. The palate is light on its feet thanks to the very fine tannins that frame the predominant red fruit laced with white pepper and bay leaf. This is very well structured on the finish and possesses the length of the Lavaux. This is very impressive and it should age supremely well in bottle, perhaps the dark horse of Mortet's 2019s. Two big plots in their own ‘clos’ and two little plots below. This is one of the vineyards, which Arnaud works only by horse and by hand, and he feels that he has really seen a qualitative difference as a result. Rich imperial purple with a super sensual bouquet, tear-jerkingly harmonious. Gloriously sensual behind. 5 star.

A man of the vineyards, Arnaud Mortet is driven to produce perfect Pinot fruit from meticulously tended vineyards. Arnaud is continuing Denis' dream of producing more refined wines, openly getting closer stylistically to the wines of his uncle, Charles Rousseau, without sacrificing depth and intensity or consistency across the range.

Here the wood, while still subtle, is certainly noticeable on the markedly spicy and floral aromas of earthy dark berries along with a top note of pomegranate. There is slightly more size, weight and muscle to the delineated and powerful flavors that culminate in a firmly austere, compact and strikingly long finale. This intensely mineral-driven effort is terrific with superb aging potential. Drink 2034+.

A high point of the range in this vintage is the 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques, a medium to full-bodied, ample and perfumed wine evocative of sweet berry fruit and plums mingled with rose petals, peonies, orange rind and warm spices. There was a particularly small yield in Lavaux St-Jacques this year, alas as the wines in that sector are exceptional this year. 40% of whole bunches retained but with the large stems removed by hand here. An exceptionally floral-suffused nose speaks of various dark berries that are trimmed in earth and noticeable but not invasive wood. There is again excellent volume, density and power to the large-scaled flavors that aren't nearly as mineral-driven but do offer even better depth on the youthfully austere finale where a hint of bitter cherry pit character slowly emerges. This too should amply repay extended keeping. Drink 2034+.

The 2019 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, which comes from Mortet's 0.32-hectares of 50-year old vines, is clean and precise on the nose, beautifully defined with pure Morello cherry, wild strawberry, rose petal and orange sorbet scents that are utterly seductive. Brilliant focus. The palate is beautifully balanced with filigree tannins, layers of sorbet-fresh red fruit cut through with razor-sharp acidity. Noticeable wood fights a bit with the very earthy mix of upper and lower register aromas that include red currant, raspberry, violet, plum and a whiff of the sauvage. The mid-palate of the larger-scaled flavors is supple and not especially dense though the austere finale tightens up substantially. Like the Lavaut St. Jacques, this needs to add depth over time as it's somewhat one-dimensional today. Drink 2035+.

The 2018 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is also showing very well, and Mortet speculates that drier, warmer vintages are ameliorating the lower part of this large appellation—where his vines are located. Arnaud tends to pick some village Gevrey on day 1 of the harvest to see how things are going, then does Chambolle and Clos de Vougeot on day 2. One third whole bunch vinification here, and two thirds new wood. Pretty medium deep purple in colour, Arnaud has managed to make a very stylish Clos de Vougeot with some elegance. Blended from five parcels across 1.2 hectares of terroir, this wine is certainly the benchmark Lavaux and the signature cuvée of the Mortet Estate. It is also usually the most mineral wine released by the Domaine. Lavaux is always the last Mortet site to be harvested due to the vineyard’s cool location: even if it is immediately next door to Clos St-Jacques, it does not have the protection of the high walls, and instead sits in the direct path of the northern airstreams that flow down from the valley (Combe de Lavaux). Mortet has been using more and more whole bunches, and now, more hand-destemmed berries, as he searches for ever-greater finesse.

    Other Reviews....
A distinctly cool and restrained nose offers up ripe and ultra-fresh aromas of red and dark currant, pungent earth and plenty of forest floor character. With its eroded limestone walls covered in creepers and wildflowers, this is one of Gevrey’s most picturesque vineyards. It is situated high on the border of Brochon next to Les Evocelles. The vines are now 80 years old. The soils here are very stony with red clays, and the mother-rock is very close to the surface. Mortet ploughs his four small plots (totalling 0.5-hectares) by horse. This is a site that typically delivers very small berries and powerful, ripe fruit flavours with high-grown, fruit-of-the-forest finesse and freshness. Mortet has reduced the new wood content (now 60%, down from 100% in his father’s era). It’s a terroir that gifts wines of a more structured, more ‘Gevrey’ style.

    Other Reviews....
This is also aromatically super-fresh with a lovely mélange of plum, dark raspberry and earth that is trimmed in just enough wood to merit pointing out. Les Champonnets, situated on the same line as the Grands Crus and very near to Ruchottes-Chambertin, is tucked up high near the entrance of the Lavaux combe (or valley). Mortet’s parcel here used to make up almost half of his Premier Cru bottling, and 2014 was the first year this parcel was vinified and bottled separately. It comes from a combination of very old vines (60-70 years old) and some younger, at around 30 years of age. The soil is deep, yet with a strong limestone component that shows through in the wine, which is rich and profound, with plush blackberry and floral fruit and loads of spice.

This is Mortet’s ‘super Gevrey’ and comes from a clutch of five brilliantly placed plots that Denis Mortet deliberately chose for the quality of their terroirs and vines. The vineyards include En Motrot, situated between the church and Château de Gevrey-Chambertin close to Clos Saint-Jacques; Au Vellé, very close-by under Petits Cazetiers; Combe-du-Dessus, situated at the top of the Brochon slope just north-east of Gevrey itself; En Champs directly below Gevrey’s Premier Cru Champeaux where the vines here are over 70 years old; and En Dérée, below En Champs on the Brochon border. Only 30% new barrels were used here and 15% whole berries (hand-destemmed).

    Other Reviews....
Here the wood influence is a bit more evident though it stops short of masking the nuance of the spice and earth-inflected aromas of red currant, dark raspberry and forest floor. The vineyard name, Les Longeroies, probably comes from the French verb longer which means ‘to border’. This makes sense as Longeroies is on the boundary between Marsannay and the next village of Chenôve. It is a star climat of the AOC and has been earmarked for promotion to Premier Cru. Longeroies faces south, and the two Mortet parcels sit mid-slope. One is 50 years old, and the other was planted with Pinot Fin clones in 1992. The aging consisted of 18 months in oak casks, 25% new and the balance in one- and two-year-old wood. Although the prices are now rising, Marsannay remains one of the last great value appellations of the Côte and this is certainly one of its finest examples.

Firm reduction dominates the fruit today. Aromas of sweet cherries, cassis, rich spices, incense and orange peel introduce the 2017 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy rendition of this bottling, with a deep core of fruit and surprisingly melting tannins. Mortet's evolution in the direction of finesse coupled with the generous vintage has made for a supple, charming Clos de Vougeot that will offer uncharacteristically precocious drinking.

The 2017 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru includes 30% whole bunches this year and matures in 75% new oak. It has a very pure, almost candied bouquet with strawberry tart, raspberry preserve and pressed rose petal aromas that are neatly entwined with the new wood. The palate is medium-bodied with smooth tannin, orange pith and brown spices infusing the layers of red fruit. Maybe it just misses a little personality compared to some of Mortet’s other 2017s, but it is still very well balanced and stylish.

Rich dark purple, stems apparent on the nose along with dark fruit. This absolutely sings on the palate, quite high toned, gorgeous flamboyant rich red cherry fruit, then a fine weight of fruit behind. More Mortet than Clos de Vougeot.

Pungent aromas are composed by notes of reduction and wood toast at present. There is excellent volume to the sleek, concentrated and more powerful flavors that flash a subtle minerality on the driving, firm and austere but not really rustic finish. At least some patience required.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champonnet 1er Cru is completely de-stemmed and matures in around 60% new oak. It has a very well defined bouquet with more red than black fruit, hints of lavender and pot pourri, vigorous and open. The palate is very well balanced with a lightly spiced opening, quite sappy in the mouth with a juicy and expressive finish. There is a sense of joie-de-vivre in this wine already and I hope that will be translated into bottle.

This used to be part of the 1er cru blend, separated out in 2015 but not ‘16. Light to medium purple, a slight toasty reduction. Ripe cherry and strawberry notes, the reduction continues, good wine again but not magisterial. Lovely sweet red fruit finish with just enough acidity.

Once again there is a discreet but not invisible touch of wood framing the notably earthier and more deeply pitched aromas of both red and dark currant and forest floor nuances. There is fine intensity and solid concentration to the vibrant middle weight flavors that reflect ample minerality, all wrapped in a focused, complex and lengthy finish that flashes unusually good power for a villages level wine. As it usually is, this is a fine effort and well worth considering.

Tasted from bottle, the 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Mes Cinq Terroirs is showing well, bursting with expressive aromas of sweet berry fruit, plums, orange rind and licorice, framed by a deft touch of classy new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, supple and charming, with succulent acids, ripe and powdery tannins and good depth at the core. While this is a serious effort, it will drink well with only a couple of years in bottle.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin "Mes Cinq Terroirs" comes from vineyards in the northern slopes towards Brochon and includes 20% whole bunches and raised in 30% new oak. It offers brambly black fruit on the nose with just a hint of iodine that emerges with aeration. The palate is quite sharp and citric on the entry with compact red berry fruit tinged with cola and balanced. It may be missing the persistence on the finish of the previous two vintages. Fine.

This too is strongly reduced. The medium weight and lively flavors possess a comparatively refined mouthfeel and plenty of minerality on the firmer if less muscular finish where a touch of wood toast can be found. This too will require at least some patience and reward up to 15 years of it.

Typically one of the broadest-shouldered wines in the cellar, the 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Champeaux was lightly reduced on the day that I tasted it, unwinding in the glass to reveal plenty of red-black fruit and savory nuance. On the palate, the wine was easier to read, displaying a medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated profile, with excellent amplitude, juicy acids and a long, delineated finish. It's a definite success.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux 1er Cru comes from 60 to 100-year old vines, matures in 70% new oak with 30% whole bunches. That whole bunch component is very expressive on the nose: quite tertiary and stemmy in style, well defined and with a noticeable degree of transparency and airiness. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, well balanced with that stemmy character prevalent throughout this Champeaux. Maybe that just overrides the terroir expression on the finish? Hence my more cautious score at the moment.

Fine rich purple, as last year the bouquet is a cut above all the others. Definitely a whole bunch effect with 40% here, the fruit dances across the palate. While there may be much less density than the sensational 2016, this it is completely lovely nonetheless.

A super-fresh if somewhat brooding nose is comprised by notes of essence of red pinot fruit, spice and lavender that really helped from being in a decanter for 30 minutes first. The succulent and reasonably concentrated medium weight flavors exude a subtle minerality before concluding in a compact, powerful, complex and impressively persistent finish. This seems to have put on weight since I last reviewed it and I like the overall sense of harmony and balance. The 2017 Volnay Les Santenots-du-Milieu 1er Cru was opened by Dominique Lafon just because he wanted to compare with the ensuing two vintages. Who was I to stop him? It is very different in style from those vintages: redder fruit, more transparency, charming, and it wears its heart on its sleeve. The palate is full of slightly peppery red berry fruit, saline and spicy with good grip and a long raspberry and wild strawberry finish. So unbelievably drinkable, even at this early stage you’ll finish bottle. Drink 2023-2040.

Dominique thinks this may be THE vintage of the recent past, even at 55 hl/ha. This view may be conditioned by having just lived through making the third hot dry vintage in a row. The 2017 may be a fraction lighter in colour, but it is really haunting in its fruit, superbly balanced, medium density, a crisp tannin or two right at the back and now here comes the fruit again. I see what Dominique means – certainly if you want to drink in the medium-term future.

The 2015 Clos de Tart Grand Cru is a monumental young wine, opening in the glass with a brooding bouquet of wild berries, peony, orange rind, licorice, espresso roast and spice. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, powerful and multidimensional, with an enormous core of vibrant fruit, an ample chassis of fine tannins and a beautiful line of acidity. While the vintage has brought an extra dimension of concentration and power to this Clos de Tart, it remains wonderfully controlled through the long, palate-staining finish, and the terroir—including its proximity to Bonnes Mares—is front and center. With his first solo vintage at Clos de Tart, Jacques Desvauges has evidently hit the ground running. Cropped at 22 hectoliters per hectare, vinified with 40% whole cluster, and aged in 80% new wood.

Deep, bright red with ruby tones. Deeper and darker on the nose than the young 2016, offering hints of black raspberry, medicinal cherry, mocha and crushed rock; seems already to be closing down. Plump and thick in the style of the year; superripe but not at all cooked. The chewy flavors of dark fruits, stone, mocha and brown spices convey strong mineral-driven energy for the vintage, as well as the sheer dry extract to support the wine's serious tannic clout. This hugely concentrated wine spreads out horizontally to saturate the palate on the powerful, slowly mounting finish, which leaves behind an impression of medicinal reserve. Winemaker Devauges is not convinced that this wine will shut down in bottle "because of the quality of the grapes and the tannins," but I think it's inevitable. He vinified with an average of 40% whole clusters in 2015 and did just three punchdowns during the course of three weeks of maceration. By the way, this wine has a slightly lower pH than the 2016: 3.6, vs. 3.7.

Moderate wood frames very ripe liqueur-like aromas of plum, cassis, floral and ample spice and earth nuances. There is excellent richness to the opulent yet relatively refined big-bodied flavors that exhibit a subtle minerality on the powerful, mouth coating and driving finish that possesses outstanding complexity and persistence. There is a hint of warmth but overall this is quite well-balanced and the length is remarkable. My sense is that while this will age effortlessly for decades, it should not be particularly difficult young.

It’s always a treat to taste a wine from Vosne, but our judges look at such wines against their peers, so they have to be good to make progress … and very good indeed to reach Best In Show. Not only does it encapsulate the appeal of its village with its velvet-textured opulence and ample raspberry and black-cherry fruits, but its fleet-footed vivacity and deft yet firm structure underlines what a great vintage 2019 is. After much hesitation, they decided to produce a 100% Pinot Noir cuvée for the first time in 2018, made mostly from their Clos St-Laurent parcel located behind the winery, at an elevation of approximately 340–380 m. The soil is made of fallen rocks (éboulis calcaires) of Bajocian limestone over grey marls and the vines are between 10 and 45 years old. In 2019, ageing was in burgundian barrels because of the small yields. No new oak. Bottling took place at the end of August 2019. This vintage is 100% from Clos St-Laurent.

Pale cherry red. Intense and reviving aroma of ripe little red berries, red cherry, cranberry, plus a hint of red plum and spice. Just as intense and refreshing on the palate, this is vibrant, slightly wild alpine Pinot Noir. The tannins are extremely fine but sufficient to keep the fruit in tight shape and become more chewy with the second sip. Refined and long and likely to age well with such perfect balance, the fruit sweetness comes full circle on the finish. Drink 2022 - 2032.

Domaine du Pélican are based in Montigny-les-Arsures near Arbois in the Jura and was started in 2012 by Guillaume d’Angerville of Domaine Marquis d’Angerville in Volnay, Burgundy, and François Duvivier, régisseur at Domaine Marquis d’Angerville. The Domaine farms high quality terroirs located in and around the city of Arbois. The plots are among Jura’s finest, the very best being En Barbi and Grand Curoulet. Terroirs here are a mix of marly clay and gravels with varying exposures from north to south, are even more complex than in Burgundy. Whilst a broadly Burgundian approach is employed to wine-making, there is no doubting the individuality and Jurassien personality of the wines. The d’Angerville approach in the cellar has always been light-touch, one which is toned down even more for Domaine du Pélican, little new oak is used and élévage is shorter, lasting twelve months as opposed to eighteen in Volnay. Tanks and foudres are employed for ageing the reds, 500 litre casks for the Savagnin and traditional Burgundian barriques for the Chardonnay. The whites are both “topped up” as opposed to the more common oxidative Jura method.

The fruit is mostly from their Clos St-Laurent parcel behind the winery, at an elevation of approximately 340–380 m. No stems. The soil is made of fallen rocks (scree) of Bajocian limestone over grey marls and the vines are 10–45 years old. 60% aged in barrel (none new), 40% in tank. Bottled August 2019.
Light cherry red. Delicate, fresh and scented. Hint of orange, even a little floral, as well as cranberry – ie tart fruit not strawberry red fruit though it is somehow both tart and sweet. Silky, fresh and incredibly long. So much life and energy and elegance with delicious sweet-sour cherry on the palate. A wild, exhilarating freshness.

Rather powerful and muscular by the standards of the vintage, the 2021 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru reveals aromas of dark berries and plums mingled with rose petals, spices and orange zest. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with a textural mid-palate and a long, perfumed finish, this is impressive.

The 2021 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from the lieu-dit of "Les Charmes". This cuvée was heavily reduced on the nose, so skipping past that, the palate is juicy on the entry, with fine acidity. However, I feel it does not possess the complexity and mineral-drive as the superb Aux Combottes this year, as if to say, "you take the honours". Drink 2024-2034.

55% whole bunch. Dark crimson purple. The bouquet shows a little reduction, with dark raspberry and strawberry fruit. Powerful and backward, a very crunchy finish with a few more tannins, definitely a darker fruit. A little new oak behind. This needs more elevage. Drink from 2027-2034.

The ripe blackberry fruit aromas of the Dujac Charmes-Chambertin are almost impossibly seductive, with hints of earth and spice. There is also a rewarding density here as the plump fruit continues on the palate, supported by silky yet sustaining tannins that carry the wine to a lingering finish. The grapes come from their parcel of 0.70 hectares located in the lieu-dit of Aux Charmes that was picked on 28 September. A top wine. Drink 2025-2045.

The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes has turned out especially well this year, exhibiting aromas of sweet red berries, exotic spices, rose petals and blood orange. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, its enveloping core of fruit is framed by powdery structuring tannins.

The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Combottes 1er Cru, which was made with 60% whole bunches, has a well-defined bouquet, quite tertiary in style with plenty of forest floor and pencil box aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-chiselled tannins, one of the most mineral-driven in Dujac's range, precise and detailed, a pinch of spice, harmonious and quite persistent on the finish. A Combottes that feels like a Swiss watch - precise, precise, precise. Drink 2025-2044.

60% whole bunch. A rich crimson purple colour. There is vastly more fruit on the nose than the Gruenchers. Mildly reductive, but such a high-class fruit beneath. There is a magical intensity right across the palate, racy, finely balanced and above all persistent. Much more fruit than pepper to finish. Drink from 2027-2034.

This wine makes one stand up and take notice with its lovely cherry/floral fruit expression and plenty of depth on the nose. The texture is firmly tannins, with plenty of freshness and impressive depth. The ripe fruit echoes on the lengthy finish. For me, this is often the best value in the portfolio; that may be true this year too. It is produced from a 1.16-hectare site acquired in 2005 (making them the largest owner in the appellation). This year they picked the fruit on 29 October. Drink 2027-2050.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes is also performing very well, wafting from the glass with aromas of blackberries, cassis and sweet soil tones, complemented by hints of warm spices and violets. Medium to full-bodied, lively and elegant, it's seamless and enveloping, concluding with youthfully chalky grip on the finish.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Combottes 1er Cru is showing a lot of promise. The floral element that I noticed from barrel has become more accentuated now that the wine is in bottle and marries beautifully with the black cherry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. Just a little gaminess comes through with a fleshy finish that disguises the structure underneath. There is a pinch of cracked black pepper on the aftertaste. Excellent.

An admirably discreet application of wood frames the very pretty and equally perfumed nose that flashes ripe notes of cassis, red currant and an impressive range of spice and floral elements. The medium weight flavors are not especially dense though the mid-palate texture is refined and lilting, all wrapped in a dusty, youthfully austere and complex finish. I like the sense of energy and while firm, this is not so structured as to be unapproachable after only 5-ish or so years. With that said, it's built to reward 12+.

Glowing purple, with some elegance to the nose despite the richness of the fruit, liqueur cherries, delicious fruity which totally covers the structure. This is going to make a gorgeous bottle, balanced and long.

Aromas of rose petals, red berries, plums, woodsmoke, exotic spices and hoisin introduce Dujac's 2018 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts, a full-bodied, layered wine that's dramatic and enveloping but impressively fine-boned, with rich, powdery structuring tannins and a long, sapid finish. This showed especially well from barrel, and it has fully fulfilled its promise in bottle.

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Aux Malconsorts 1er Cru has an extravagant bouquet with brambly red fruit laced with shucked oyster shell and a touch of seaweed. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, lightly spiced with a subtle ash-like note towards the composed finish. This has great backbone that should guarantee its longevity. A quintessential Dujac/Malconsorts.

Exceptionally floral, elegant and pure aromas speak of red and dark currant, violet, rose petal and exotic spice nuances, all of which is trimmed in subtle wood. There is first-rate intensity to the muscular full-bodied flavors that coat the palate with dry extract that also partially buffers the very firm, serious and austere finish that is shaped by a robust tannic spine that will take its time resolving. Like the Vosne-Romanée Beaux Monts, this is a wine to put in the cellar for a minimum of 10 years and it should amply repay double that.

Colour has not quite settled, but the nose is lovely, with wild cherry aromatics, roses and peonies and an absolutely sumptuous weight of fruit on the palate. Super sensual and brilliantly.

Unfurling in the glass with aromas of sweet berry fruit, dark chocolate, rose petals, orange rind, burning embers and spices, the 2018 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is full-bodied, layered and muscular, with a deep, concentrated and multidimensional core that's framed by rich, powdery tannins and impressively lively acids. This is a dramatic wine that hasn't yet shut down, but I wouldn't plan on opening bottles for at least a dozen years.

The 2018 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is probably now just a step ahead of the Clos Saint-Denis on the nose: stunning violet-infused red fruit with veins of blueberry that unfold exquisitely. The palate is silky smooth in texture, lightly spiced with a cornucopia of mineral-driven red fruit that convey just the right degree of flamboyance. Outstanding.

Discreet but not imperceptible wood and menthol characters set off very ripe liqueur-like aromas of black raspberry, cassis, floral and plenty of sauvage nuances. The sleekly textured and impressively intense large-scaled flavors possess evident power on the dusty, serious and palate coating finish that is definitely quite grippy and a bit coarse, indeed even a bit chewy. I like the overall fruit/tannin/sap balance and while it will take extended bottle age, this borderline massive wine should eventually mature into a magnificent CdlR.

Dense purple hugely enthusiastic nose, with class, some stems and perfectly judged fruit ripeness. We had the discussion about blueberry fruit in Clos de la Roche. This fills out nicely behind, this is really distinguished, a great wine in the making. I love the way the stems blend in and there is also an endearing dusting of cocoa powder at the back. Balanced and long.

The 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru unwinds in the glass with aromas of sweet cherries and red berries mingled with nuances of rose petals, orange rind, cinnamon and forest floor. The 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru comes from Ruchots, Sorbets, Millandes and Charrières. It has a clean, precise bouquet of mineral-rich black fruit that is vivid and bright. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannins and a fine bead of acidity. A little compact at the moment; the aftertaste needs more persistence to complete this Premier Cru.

A deft touch of wood sets off a blend of floral and earth-inflected dark berry fruit-suffused nose. The supple yet nicely detailed medium weight flavors also culminate in a grippy, firm and austere finish that isn't short but neither is it especially persistent. It's possible that the somewhat coarse tannins may well harmonize in time but my sense is that they're likely to remain prominent and not completely integrated.

Rich dense purple with a fresh mulberry nose, sweet ripe fruit swamps the palate, just a touch of dry tannins at the finish, pretty sensual yet with some sternness of structure. Perhaps this needs a little longer to settle down, but on today’s showing I slightly prefer the village Morey.

Aromas of cherries, raspberries, sweet spices, orange rind and peony preface the 2018 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Gruenchers, a medium to full-bodied wine that was also quite firm and structured on my visit chez Dujac, displaying plenty of succulent, fragrant fruit behind its youthfully muscular chassis of tannin. Again, there's a lot of potential here, but patience will be required.

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Gruenchers 1er Cru has a very complex bouquet of black cherry and raspberry plus touches of clove and thyme; there is something effortless about these aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy tannins, a superb line of acidity and a palpable marine influence on the vivid, energetic finish. Superb.

A really pretty nose is strikingly perfumed with its notes of ripe black cherry, spiced plum, violet and rose petal. The sleek and again almost painfully intense flavors though the mildly warm finish is again dusty, austere and a bit coarse. This too may harmonize in time though it's a sufficiently open question that my projected range is a bit wider than usual.

Fine fresh purple, Jeremy thinks picked too late but it does not smell excessive. It is certainly plump and juicy but the whole bunch has freshened up the finish. More oak at the back.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.

Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
