Pinot Noir

While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

Les saint-Georges is widely considered the finest vineyard of Nuits-St-Georges, and the one most often associated with an upgrade to Grand Cru status. While that is still a work in progress, the vineyard certainly produces the fullest and richest wines from the commune where the notable tannins commonly found here are often supported by generous fleshy fruit.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru has an intense, powerful bouquet of red and black fruit and undergrowth; touches of menthol develop with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, good structure and matière, and saline on the midpalate, leading to a grippy, quite assertive finish. Good aging potential.

The 2018 Bourgogne Pinot Noir had already been bottled. It has a brisk raspberry and blueberry bouquet with fine definition. The palate is showing just a bit of sur-maturité for me, and the fleshy, sweet finish is a little confit-like.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cherbaudes 1er Cru has an attractive bouquet of red cherries, wild strawberry and orange zest aromas, the mineralité surfacing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet candied opening, fleshy and ripe, but it needs a little more structure toward the finish. Great nose, but the palate needs to foment a little more class.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Village has a perfumed, floral bouquet of violets and lavender aromas that slightly occlude the terroir. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a structured opening, fresh and saline, displaying good depth and a crunchy, slightly austere finish. The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Fontenys 1er Cru has a superb bouquet: beautifully defined and very pure, featuring a gorgeous rose petal note. Matured in French oak for 12 months, 20% of which was new. Very deep dark red colour with black tinged edges and a dark red hue. Aromas of violets, red and dark cherries and strawberries are complexed by light scorched earth, dusty cedar and spice. Light to medium bodied with a meaty feel, the palate sports dark cherry and strawberry fruits over a back drop of earth, dried meats and spicy cedar. Grainy, slightly firm tannins provide the framework. Long savoury red fruited aftertaste tinged with hints of earth.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin is laced with the essence of rose petal, mint, purplish fruit and lavender. Weightless on the palate and beautifully perfumed, the 2017 offers terrific delineation and energy throughout, with a discreet touch of oak that frames the finish. The 2017 is an especially refined village wine with much to recommend it. This is really quite lovely.

A superb Central Otago Pinot that saw 20% whole bunch inclusion and maturation only in older French oak. Dark red in colour with black tinged edges and a light bright red hue. Perfumed violet, dark cherry, ripe strawberry and anise scents fill the olfactory senses trailed by forest floor, dried herb and spicy cedar notes. Showing terrific intensity, power and purity of fruit are rich dark to black cherry, ripe strawberry and anise flavours which are underpinned by elements of forest floor, dried herbs, subtle smoked meats and spicy cedar. Central Otago pinot noir from various blocks of the Winter Vineyard.
I tasted this among a range of pinot noirs and it stood out head and shoulders. You’re only as good as your competition of course but the truth is that the quality here sits firmly and squarely. It’s beautifully spiced and the cut of tannin is noteworthy. I always like it when structure and spice stand out before fruit, though there’s nothing underpowered about the latter. It’s a boysenberried pinot with smoke notes and florals. There’s both a ripeness and a juiciness to the palate but there’s also an emphasis on dryness. It’s a most impressive wine. Drink 2020-2027.

A rich and full yet surprising bright, crunchy Burgundy.

Aged in French oak barrels (20% new) for a period of 17 months. Impenetrable inky black heart with a very deep dark red black tinged hue. Heady black cherry, black raspberry and liquorice scents waft through the nostrils followed by some vanillin cedar, scorched earth and spice.
Rich and full yet also very bright, freshly crushed dark to black cherry and dark raspberry fruits fill the mouth. Some ripe strawberry, scorched earth and spice characters ensue. Lending a crunchy feel to what is otherwise an opulent Burgundy is lively acidity. Fine grained tannins with a very energised and fruity conclusion.

From a 1.52ha vineyard near the village facing east and south. The wine ferments for two weeks with a modest inclusion of whole clusters prior to ageing in cask (20% new). The result has a bright pomegranate and red cherry fruit, with a menthol edge on the nose. There is a hint of reduction on the nose and lighter body on the palate than the other premiers crus, with bright acidity and a moderate finish. Approachable soon. Drink 2023-2035.

Established in 2000 by Jim and Daisy Chatto, Chatto Wines is dedicated exclusively to Pinot Noir. With over two decades of experience and numerous accolades—including Gourmet Traveller Wine’s Winemaker of the Year—Jim Chatto crafts small-batch, site-expressive wines. The home vineyard in the Huon Valley is planted to eight Pinot clones, producing elegant, intensely flavoured wines in tiny quantities. The 2024 vintage followed Tasmania’s driest summer on record, delivering clean, concentrated fruit. These are structured, expressive Pinots with immediate appeal and excellent cellaring potential.

Lutruwita, named after the palawa kani word for Tasmania, brings together fruit from across six key sub-regions: Huon Valley (26%), Derwent Valley (26%), Coal Valley (16%), Pipers River (12%), Tamar Valley (10%) and the East Coast (10%). Handpicked and fermented on skins for ten days with gentle plunging, it captures the essence of Tasmanian Pinot—bright, perfumed and elegant, with fine structure and wonderful purity of length.

Medium-ruby in the glass. The '24 Lutruwita comes across a little finer on the aromatic front than the previous release. Red cherry and raspberry fruit notes meld with hints of blood orange, medina spice, a wisp of struck-flint reduction, blossom, roast duck, crushed stone, pomegranate and dried cranberry. As is the Chatto style, there is all the space and detail you could wish for with a stony composure, pure, flighty fruit, a fine mineral line and a gentle tug of silty tannin on the exit. Drink 2025-2040.

This is firm. This is serious. Black cherry and woodsy spice characters lead into aromatic herbs and plum. It has a minerally edge, a tonic infusion, a nori roll aspect, and a noteworthy push of tannin. You can drink this now but it’s going nowhere in a hurry. Drink 2026-2032+

Medium depth purple colour, bright and youthful. A little smoky reduction at first sniff along with rich, ripe dark-cherry aromas, the palate following on with rich, sweetly ripe cherry flavours laced with spices and some meaty/toasty nuances. Lovely wine, just finishes slightly grippy with a hint of bitterness, which food would take care of. Plenty to like here, and it has a future.

The 2024 Bird Pinot Noir is from the Piper's Brook vineyard in Piper's River, and in the glass, the wine is light in color and ultra perfumed. In the mouth, the wine is all about rose petals and clove, with notes of cocoa, dried herb and red apple skins. It's pure and intense, elegant and pretty. This is from Clone 114 on sandy soil, and the tannins have that lovely reflection in them too; they're chalky, sandy, fresh and fine. No whole bunches were used in this cuvée. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2026-2036.

Single-site pinot noir (clone 114) from the Bird vineyard in Pipers River. Bright ruby in the glass with a taut aromatic profile of red cherry, redcurrant and raspberry. These fruit tones are undercut with hints of undergrowth, exotic spice, shiitake broth, smoked meats, fennel tops, gentle meadow herbs and some distant wood spice. The fruit, too, is stretched on a minerally canvas. The tannins, pumice fine, gather gravity as the wine progresses across the palate, but lie nicely sympatico with the fruit. It's a delicate, nuanced style and one with plenty of cellaring upside. Drink 2025-2040.

    Clone 114 planted in 1998.
The fruit here has a sweet edge but then it’s also herbal, sinewy and long. It’s classically structured, well flavoured and, even as a young wine, inherently complex. Woodsy spice notes – crushed – a lavender note, plenty of herbs and plenty of black cherry, with a dark cedar, smoked tobacco-like character through the finish. Excellent Pinot Noir. Will mature beautifully. Drink 2026 - 2033+

Light-medium red-purple colour; shy aromas of clean fresh red cherry to raspberry aromas, some attractive herb touches, and firming, cleansing tannins to complete the picture. Very smart pinot of a more delicate style, and best served with food. (Pipers River district).

Vivid dark red colour with black tinged edges and a bright crimson red hue. Lifted dark cherry and strawberry aromas have a smoked meat overlay with forest floor, dried herb and spice notes ensuing. Bright red to dark cherry and strawberry fruits show excellent drive across the palate underscored by dried meats, light smoky cedar, forest floor and spicy dried herbs. Fleshy feel with vibrant acidity enlivening the back half. Refined yet structured tannins with a long flavoursome finish.

First the bad news. Bushfires meant no harvest from the Isle, Huon Valley and Seven Inch sites. The good news, Chatto sourced fruit from the Tamar Valley and Pipers River resulting in two single vineyard wines and this terrific blend. Plenty of Chinese five-spice and meaty, roast beetroot reduction infused into the just-ripe red cherry fruit. While medium-bodied, it's tight with pulsing acidity and rather textural tannins the final impression quite ethereal. Drink by 2030.

The superb 2016 Clos de Tart Grand Cru confirms the promise it showed from barrel, unfurling in the glass with a striking bouquet of raspberries, rose petals, blood orange, black tea, spices and smoked meats. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, pure and ample, with a deep core of vibrant, searingly intense fruit that entirely cloaks its structuring chassis of satiny tannin, concluding with a long and captivatingly floral finish. More elegant and transparent than the richer and fleshier 2015, this is an exceptional vintage for Clos de Tart. That there are fully 27,000 bottles makes this one of Burgundy's rare confluence of quality and quantity.

William Kelley - The Wine Advocate

The 2016 Clos de Tart Grand Cru, cropped at 35hl/ha, is the first year farmed biodynamically. This was completely breathtaking in barrel, and now, in bottle, nothing has changed in that respect. It has an ineffably complex bouquet, not as intense as it showed in barrel yet extremely deep and cerebral, black fruit mingling with forest floor, crushed stone and a touch of sea spray. The palate is perfectly balanced with a deceivingly understated entry, before a wave of black and red fruit crashes over the senses. It is framed by supremely fine tannin, the intensity building toward a crescendo as it fans out. The aftertaste is unbelievably long, remaining in the mouth 60 seconds after the wine has departed. The best ever - simple as that. Tasted at Clos de Tart.

    Neal Martin - Vinous

A wonderfully fresh, bright and layered nose reflects notes of cool red and black cherry, plum, violet, lavender, herbal tea, earth and a subtle, but not invisible, touch of wood. There is notably more volume and mid-palate concentration to the relatively supple medium weight plus flavors that tighten up noticeably on the dusty, balanced and exquisitely persistent finish where a hint of bitter cherry pit surfaces. This moderately powerful effort is shaped by dense but fine tannins and is a wine that should amply repay extended cellaring.

A 50-50 blend of fruit from Northburn and Bannockburn (Cloudy Bay leases a portion of the Calvert Vineyard), the 2015 Te Wahi Pinot Noir is a full-bodied, plummy wine. Made from rows 55 to 77 from the 3.2ha, south-facing D block planted with MV6 between 1995 and 1998. Whole bunches (25%) and matured in 70% new oak. The prettiest and most delicate of Clyde Park's 2022 single-block wines. Aromas of satsuma plums, dark cherries, rose petals, incense and some potpouri notes. Sweetly fruited and finely tuned on the palate, there's a delicacy that's appealing. An obsession with a fickle varietal.

Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way.
