While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago. 2021 Caroline Morey Chassagne-Montrachet RougeBurgundy, FRANCE$145. 00Bottle$1740.00 DozenABV: 13%Closure: CorkCaroline Morey comes from a long line of vignerons based in the Cotes de Beaune and is also married to Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey. In 2014 Caroline took her share of some family vineyards from her father Jean-Marc and created her own domaine based in Chassagne-Montrachet, working out of brand new cellars built for Caroline and her husband.
For her first vintage in 2014 she had small holdings in Chassagne-Montrachet for both red and white together with small holdings in Santenay and Hautes Cotes de Beaune totaling just 2.4 hectares. With more vineyards added both from family and acquisitions in the last few years, the total is now 7 hectares in total for Caroline with roughly half for red and half for whites.
Other Reviews....
An unusually perfumed and exceptionally pretty nose freely reveals its aromas of the essence of various red berries, pepper and an appealing variety of floral elements. There is more volume and richness still to the vibrant and attractively textured flavors that are also largely built on their fruit, which should permit this delicious effort to be enjoyed on the younger side. Drink through 2025+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet is a blend of three vineyards. It has a little more concentration on the nose compared to the two Santenays with raspberry and wild strawberry to the fore. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannins, fresh and chalky, lively with a brittle, you could almost say "bony" finish that is full of tension and freshness. Drink 2024-2031.

Classic ruby color. Bright red berry fruit aromas enjoy added breadth in the form of violet, lilac, pepper and earth nuances. The mouthfeel of the slightly richer flavors possess better precision and a subtle minerality that adds a sense of lift to the moderately firmer finale. This could also be popped and poured young or aged for a few years first. Drink through 2026+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2021 Santenay Comme 1er Cru, located on the Chassagne boundary, has an open-knit cranberry and tomato vines-scented bouquet that is well-defined and transparent. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly coarse tannins, pretty red fruit laced with pepper and a lively simple finish. Fine. Drink 2024-2030.

Classic ruby. Cool and pure aromas include those of red cherry, raspberry and soft earth scents. The delicious and vibrant lighter weight flavors possess a supple mid-palate before concluding in a clean and mildly austere finish. This is built on its fruit and should drink well shortly after release. Drink through 2024+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2021 Santenay Village a blend of two vineyards, has a lovely, simple but effective nose of raspberry jam and wild strawberry (but mainly the former). The palate is medium-bodied with slightly rustic tannins, nicely structured, simple but honest. Drink 2024-2030.

35% whole bunch from the sunnier spot. Just a trifle darker in colour and in fruit style, raspberries here, with maybe a point more concentration. Good tannins in a fresher style with the fruit returning behind. Significant intensity and riper right at the back.

Three plots, 40% of whole bunch (from Les Chênes which is pinot fin). Quite dense purple, with a volume of concentrated dense fruit, yet still with a valuable fresher underlay. There is grip almost to the extent of bitterness here, but I think that works – and I do like the fact that the fruit is not cooked.

Medium depth of youthful purple. The nose is really interesting with raspberry and strawberry but with a complex interaction, continuing on the palate with slightly firm tannins which will clearly meld in better with only a little more elevage. Very long finish, firm character here.

This is also relatively high-toned as the fruit derives more from the red side of the spectrum. There is a bit more volume and mid-palate density to the rich and nicely energetic medium-bodied flavors that aren't as fine but do offer slightly better depth in an age-worthy package. Good stuff.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundMid red to purple, picked in late August. Long rows of 450m go all the way up the slope, though interrupted by the patch in the middle which was replanted to chardonnay in 1999. 40% whole bunch vinification is employed. That character shows in refined raspberry and fresh strawberry, but the core of Grèves shows through too. Surprisingly rich fruit on the palate with just a touch of chocolate too. Very good length.

A more accessible wine than its stubborn whole-bunch pinot sibling. As it should be, given the price. But drinking this light-weighted pinot only asserts the virtues of sappy fruit – all red cherry and sassafras – judicious use of bunches and a modest amount of oak serving to compress the fruit, rather than extolling its excess. This is far from complex, but delicious drinking in leu of regional climatic challenges. Drink by 2027.

Les Renardes is a continuation of the Clos de Roi sector of the Corton hill, and is characterized by pebbly, marlstone soils rich in iron oolite. These reputedly impart the rich, gamey character for which Corton Renardes wines are known.

Les saint-Georges is widely considered the finest vineyard of Nuits-St-Georges, and the one most often associated with an upgrade to Grand Cru status. While that is still a work in progress, the vineyard certainly produces the fullest and richest wines from the commune where the notable tannins commonly found here are often supported by generous fleshy fruit.

At their best, Charmes-Chambertin wines display concentrated plump red fruit, and all the power and persistence expected of Grand Cru status, while perhaps a step down in complexity of the finest vineyards of this commune.

Together Chambertin and Chambertin Clos des Beze form the heart of the Gevrey Chambertin village. While differences between the two can vary more with producer input than purely from vineyard geography, generally Chambertin is considered as producing more robust wines that require longer to show its hand, while Clos des Beze is often more giving and pretty in its youth.

Other Reviews....
The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru has an intense, powerful bouquet of red and black fruit and undergrowth; touches of menthol develop with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, good structure and matière, and saline on the midpalate, leading to a grippy, quite assertive finish. Good aging potential.

The 2018 Bourgogne Pinot Noir had already been bottled. It has a brisk raspberry and blueberry bouquet with fine definition. The palate is showing just a bit of sur-maturité for me, and the fleshy, sweet finish is a little confit-like.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cherbaudes 1er Cru has an attractive bouquet of red cherries, wild strawberry and orange zest aromas, the mineralité surfacing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet candied opening, fleshy and ripe, but it needs a little more structure toward the finish. Great nose, but the palate needs to foment a little more class.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Village has a perfumed, floral bouquet of violets and lavender aromas that slightly occlude the terroir. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a structured opening, fresh and saline, displaying good depth and a crunchy, slightly austere finish. Not bad, though I prefer the Morey-Saint-Denis in terms of complexity and fruité.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Fontenys 1er Cru has a superb bouquet: beautifully defined and very pure, featuring a gorgeous rose petal note. The medium-bodied palate delivers supple tannins, fine acidity and a sorbet-fresh, persistent finish. Alongside the Cazetiers, this would be my pick from Charles Van Canneyt. Recommended.
