Pinot Noir

While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago. Here the nose is noticeably riper yet still agreeably fresh with its array darker berries, spice and discreet floral hints, especially violet. The middleweight flavors are rich to the point of opulence thanks to the abundance of sappy dry extract that enrobes the supporting tannins on the sneaky long finish. This is a very good wine for its level though it would be fair to observe that it's not a typical Chambolle villages. Drink through 2026+.

Tasted from barrel, unracked. As always, this is the ripest in the cellar but not too obvious at 13.8%. Concentrated deep purple. The power blocks the nose a little, then a good weight of fruit shows up behind on the palate. Darker fruit, more in the ripe cherry mode at the back of the palate, a tiny bit drier but not by much.

A restrained, cooler and slightly more elegant nose is comprised by notes of ripe red currant and a hint of forest floor character. There is even better underlying tension and fine delineation if not quite the same mid-palate density to the medium-bodied flavors that display a subtle bead of minerality on the lingering and dusty but not really austere finale. Drink through 2026+.

Tasted from barrel, unracked. Deep rich purple. Quite a ripe nose but forthcoming and in raspberry mode, so not too much. Should freshen up with a racking. A little on the dry side behind, could perhaps use more fruit through the middle. Good length, and pure enough to finish.

A slightly riper, and more deeply pitched, nose features a mix of both red and dark currant and more prominent earth wisps. There is again good vibrancy to the slightly more voluminous flavors that are at once punchy but succulent, all wrapped in a sour cherry-inflected finale that offers just a bit more depth and persistence. Tasted from barrel, unracked. Not quite as intense a colour and the bouquet is just a little bit more open. A mix of deep raspberry and some blacker fruit. Silkier here and with good acidity. A step above the bulkier Montagne. Good long finish.

Here the nose is moderately reduced so be sure to give this some air if you're going to try a bottle young. Otherwise, there is better volume and an attractive texture to the delicious, succulent and punchy medium-bodied flavors that possess slightly better complexity and persistence on the balanced if mildly rustic finale. Tasted from barrel, unracked, so rather reduced. This soon blows off. 30% whole bunch vinification. Another imperial purple and a robust but very intense bouquet. Inky depths here, this is a pretty intense wine with sucrous raspberry fruit and excellent length.

Dense dark purple. Powerful plums, a graphite note as well, significant density, the fruit swells right across the palate, a huge volume but the ripeness is perfectly judged, with an excellent length. This is very impressive. Revelling in the warmer vintage because the tannins are riper.

This is made mostly from Chatelots with a touch of Feusselottes. Fresh mid purple, the nose is not leaping out at first. Excellent intensity behind, a firmer style of Chambolle as Chatelots dominates. Good length and enough acidity to balance.

Somber and inexpressive aromas of various dark berries, earth, the sauvage and pretty floral wisps introduce the acceptably dense but attractively textured medium weight flavors that possess unusually good refinement for a young Clos de Vougeot, all wrapped in a youthfully austere finish that flashes impressive depth and persistence. While this quality effort will need 12 to 15 years to reach its apogee, it's not so structured that it couldn't be enjoyed at around 7 to 8 years of age. Drink from 2031+.

Rich deep crimson to purple colour, again with a quieter nose, but it is balanced and not over ripe. Indeed, there is a crispness to the raspberry fruit at the front end, opening out to a fleshier finish as the oak adds its two bits worth. Well organised wine which will need time to develop personality.

This too flirts with reduction though once again aggressive swirling lifts it to reveal spice and floral nuances on the red and dark currant-suffused nose. There is excellent vibrancy to the super-sleek, well-detailed and utterly delicious middle weight flavors that culminate in a highly complex, classy and sneaky long finish where a touch of bitter chocolate slowly emerges. This is lovely and a wine that should age effortlessly. Drink from 2031+.

Fine deep purple, the nose just suggests an immensity to follow, but it retains its restraint. Entirely harmonious in the mouth, with a luxurious density of fruit, and while the tannins are submerged the acidity is just present. The style is slightly more in red fruit than black, though both play their part in the ensemble. Quite a robust Romanée-St-Vivant, but plenty to look forward too.

Once again, the nose is firmly reduced and in need of aeration. There is good verve and detail to the lighter weight (though not dilute) flavors that possess good flavor authority while delivering reasonably good length on the moderately rustic finale. Note that my rating assumes that the nose will gradually clean up with aging. Drink from 2026+.

Here too there is enough reduction at present to mask the underlying fruit so I would again recommend a thorough aeration if you're not planning to cellar this. Much more interesting are the much finer medium weight flavors that are at once lilting but serious, all wrapped in a compact finish that really tightens up as it sits on the palate. This is attractive in its fashion though I wouldn't describe it as especially Chambollesque. Drink from 2031+.

Mostly from Chatelots with a touch of Feusselottes, enough for 5 barrels in a good year. Intense purple with very primary fruit. Red and black fruit flavours are vying with each other, there is good acidity behind, with a little touch of reduction. Needs longer to integrate.

An intricately layered nose combines notes of red and dark cherry and plum with those of earth and underbrush. The initial palate impression of the medium weight flavors seems somewhat light but as they sit in the mouth the weight and power pick up and particularly so on the energetic and well-detailed finish that is less austere than usual. This balanced effort is also quite firmly structured and may well require up to 20 years of aging to completely resolve the supporting tannins. Drink from 2036+.

Two plots, both at the top. That which came from the Confuron family is trained in gobelet fashion to reduce vigour, while the Noëllat plot has a much better selection of pinot plant material and old vines. Glowing red purple. Back to the primary grape style of nose, otherwise quite backward. Needs more barrel time. Huge weight of fruit, dark cherry coulis, in the mouth. Nicely balanced on the palate, some elegance.

A highly spiced nose features notes of cassis, plum, hoisin and a hint of sandalwood. The ripe, mouth coating and delicious medium-bodied flavors possess excellent length on the well-balanced if youthfully austere finish that also really firms up as it sits on the palate. This is definitely a "buy and forget you own it" wine as I would advise not touching a bottle for at least 10 years and 15 to 20 would likely be better. Drink from 2036+.

The vines date back to 1926. Rich dense black purple, the nose immediately gives a sense of weight and of distinction. Quite muscular but in addition to, rather than at the expense of, finesse. There is a fine succulent fruit and a sense of harmony. I can see the wood a touch though at the back, though Louis says this is a recent and passing phenomenon.

Thomas Bouley is very much the insiders secret, more famous with his fellow vignerons than with collectors chasing the next 'superstar' seen on social media. That Thomas resists putting his name on the front label of his wines (preferring to keep his father's) is typical of his humble and low key approach. Based in Volnay may also add to his relative anonymity, however we suspect this is changing rapidly as word gets out of just how spectacular his wines are, and of the continual improvement seen since he began working with his father in the early 2000's.

Meticulous attention to detail in both the vineyard and winery are notable here, and key to why Thomas is so highly regarded by his peers. Yields are moderate, and in the cellar whole cluster ferments are used more with his clay rich sites (Pommard Fremiers, Volnay Clos des Chenes), while those with thin white soils (Pommard Rugiens-Hauts, Volnay Caillerets) are largely destemmed. New oak use is minimal, and each wine spend two winters on fine lees before bottling.

    Other Reviews....
Aromas of raspberries and plums mingled with hints of orange rind, sweet spices and forest floor introduce Bouley's 2019 Volnay Village, a medium to full-bodied, supple and seamless wine that's lively and penetrating, concluding with a long, saline finish. As I've written before, this cuvée blends the rich, clay soils of lieux-dits Poisots, Famines and Cros Martin with the thinner, whiter soils of Ez Blanches above the Clos de Chênes; but in 2019, the wine's tone is set by Ez Blanches, even if it only amounts to one-third of the blend. Drink 2025 - 2045.

Deeper pitched than the more ethereal Clos de la Cave, Bouley's 2019 Volnay Vieilles Vignes exhibits aromas of plums and dark berries mingled with raw cocoa and sweet spices. A firmly reduced nose does not allow any nuance to be appreciated. More interesting are the racy and almost painfully intense tautly muscular flavors that possess plenty of minerality that imparts a refreshing salinity on the linear, austere, compact and tightly wound finish. The 2018 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens has also turned out very well indeed, mingling aromas of cherries and red berries with hints of licorice, forest floor and rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, bright and precise, it's mineral and fine-boned, reflecting its origins in the thinner, calcareous soils of Rugiens-Hauts that have little in common with the iron-rich clays of Rugiens-Bas. It has a well-defined bouquet with red berry fruit, dark chocolate and truffle aromas emerging from the glass. Dense purple centre. A high-class nose, albeit quite discreet at first. Thomas felt that his Clos des Chênes used to be on the massive side before he tamed it with some whole bunch vinification. Very focused, with a supple orange-peel-infused finish that fans out wonderfully. One of Thomas Bouley’s best wines. Drink 2022 - 2038.

The first of the Volnays to be picked. Clear bright colour with a classy nose that suggests this great vineyard has resisted the heat. Liquid raspberries on the palate, nicely balanced tannins, just enough acidity, long and fine. Only 15 year old vines but they have held up very well.

Here there is a lovely elegance to the cool, high-toned and airy aromas of spicy red berry fruit. There is better energy to the delicious saline-inflected flavors that culminate in a markedly firm, youthfully austere and very serious finish. The 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Les Brouillards has turned out especially well. Opening in the glass with aromas of red berries and plums mingled with sweet soil tones, hints of raw cocoa and rose petals, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and seamless, with terrific concentration and beautifully refined tannins. The 2019 Volnay Les Brouillards 1er Cru immediately hits a level up from Les Angles, offering scents of vibrant red berry fruit, sous-bois and a hint of morels, all delineated and focused. Whiffs of herbal tea and spice add breadth to the cool, ripe and well-layered nose of various dark berries along with ample amounts of earth and sauvage nuances. There is excellent punch suffusing the succulent but powerful medium-bodied flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract before terminating in an almost painfully intense and hugely long finish. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy ripe red fruit, grippy tannins and though there is some new oak to be assimilated on the finish, it just needs 5-7 years in the cellar before you will surely have a fine Cazetiers on your hands. Drink 2026-2050.

Very generous wood and menthol nuances still allow the liqueur-like aromas of red currant, violet and range of spice elements to be appreciated. There is first-rate power and punch to the moderately dense and beautifully textured flavors that display superb length on the sappy finish where the only nit is a hint of warmth. Drink from 2037+.

A wine with huge potential is the 2020 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot). Unwinding in the glass with notes of raspberries, red cherries, vanilla pod, exotic spices and raw cocoa, it's full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with an immensely concentrated core, powdery tannins and a tightly wound profile. This will be among the slowest to evolve of all the wines in the cellar, and also among the most long-lived.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)

The 2020 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is very pure and harmonious on the nose with plush black cherry and cassis fruit, well-integrated oak and a floral aspect that becomes more prominent with time. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh, lightly spiced with quite a vivacious, mineral-driven finish that retains superb definition. This is very impressive and bloomin’ delicious (already!) Drink 2026-2065.

The wine is massive, with grippy tannins, full body and an interminable finish. 'A great vintage to taste in 20 years,' according to winemaker Frédéric Barnier. The 0.27ha Jadot parcel (owned by the house itself) is in a strip that goes from the top of the vineyard to the bottom, and thus includes both terres blanches (white marl) and terres rouges (red clay). The fruit character is black plum and cassis, with a firm, mineral and earthy element. Drink 2025 - 2040.

Complex meaty and spicy nose. This effortlessly marries the wild and refined sides of this Grand Cru! The fruit character stands on a mighty tower of tannins that are at once fine and slightly herbal. What an amazingly energetic finish! Drink or hold.

Delivers a velvety texture that wraps around flavors of black cherry, blackberry, plum, earth and spice. This is holding back a little now, with excellent balance and a finish that should develop even more length with time. Shows a solid core of fruit. Best from 2025 through 2045.

Here too there is moderately generous wood to be found on the earthier and more sauvage-inflected aromas of black cherry liqueur and discreet floral wisps. There is better energy and good delineation on the only slightly more concentrated flavors that do deliver impressive length on the balanced and firm finale where a similar hint of bitter pit fruit emerges. It's not clear whether this can, or will, add body and mid-palate flesh with a few years of aging. Drink from 2032+.

If every Chambertin was like this, we could give up our job. So much spice, earthy and meaty character, but in the end it's the amarena-cherry fruit that wins out. Enormous concentration and finesse. Staggering purity of flavor. Then comes the spectacularly uplifting finish that just doesn't want to stop. Drink or hold.

This is also firmly reduced so if you're for some reason tempted to open a bottle, be sure to give it a thorough aeration. There is again excellent volume to the mouth coating and powerful larger-scaled flavors that exude both hints of minerality and bitter pit fruit on the lingering, focused and balanced finale. This firmly structured effort will need to add depth over time, but the underlying material appears up to the task. Drink from 2032+.

Moderate wood and menthol influences set off wonderfully spicy aromas of slightly exotic herbal tea, dark pinot fruit and a whiff of sandalwood. There is excellent intensity to the rich and delicious middle weight flavors that possess a wonderfully refined mouthfeel that carries over to the firm, dusty and balanced finale. The Roy family has been cultivating grapes for four generations and in 1982, they began bottling their own production to fulfil their passion. With much effort and an acute focus on further enhancing their wines, Marc and his daughter Alexandrine bought a few more blocks of vineyards to increase the size of the Domaine to four hectares. In 2003, Alexandrine took over the Domaine with the intent on further raising the bar. Gradually, she reduced the yields, to produce fewer but better grapes with greater concentration of flavour. The vineyards are grown organically, strictly maintained, with great attention to detail.

The Domaine is composed of 3.5 hectares of Pinot Noir for four different cuvées. ‘La Justice’ cuvée – named after its climat that Alexandrine bought in 2010 – produced its first vintage as recently as 2011. La Justice is located in the northeast part of Gevrey-Chambertin. The most recently released vintages of La Justice and Clos Prieur are so exceptionally made, that most wine critics consider them to be of a Premier Cru standard.

An interesting and equally fresh and ripe nose combines notes of black fruit coulis, kirsch, violet and a floral whiff. The delicious, vibrant and more refined medium weight flavors possess an attractive texture thanks to the abundance of sappy dry extract that buffers the moderately firm tannins on the slightly more complex and sneaky long finale. This too offers very fine quality for its level. Drink from 2026+.

A more floral and prettier nose features notes of both red and dark currant with more spice and a bit less earth. The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée Alexandrine derives, as usual, from vines within Roy's six favorite parcels that produce tiny, shot berries. Unwinding to reveal aromas of sweet berries, orange rind, peonies and rose petals, it's medium to full-bodied, elegant and perfumed, with ultra-fine tannins, lively acids and a deep, seamless profile. Discreet wood is presently on the compositionally similar if ever-so-slightly riper nose. A ripe yet agreeably elegant, pure and airy nose consists of dark currant, spice, lavender, earth and a pretty range of floral nuances. The 2020 Volnay Fremiet 1er Cru has a perfumed bouquet with redcurrant, raspberry sorbet and sous-bois aromas that offers a subtle balsam element with time. The palate is well balanced, fresh and vibrant with crunchy red berry fruit. Good acidity here, classic in style with a linear finish, a hint of pepperiness on the aftertaste. Give this 4-5 years in bottle before broaching because it has an endearing feisty character. Drink 2025-2045.

Fuller crimson purple, with an explosive ripe raspberry nose. I would not want this to be any riper, but am very happy with it as it is. There is a certain tension on the palate, possibly a touch of blood orange in the fruit mix, enough acidity, fine-grained tannins and good length. The vineyard is on a good slope here which may help the freshness.

The 2020 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru certainly has the most opulent bouquet amongst d’Angerville’s ‘20s with exuberant black cherries, raspberry coulis, hints of fresh fig and black truffle. The palate is medium-bodied with quasi-chalky tannins, taut and fresh, quite saline and poised with a harmonious finish not dissimilar to the Taillepieds. Satisfying persistence here, but in keeping with d'Angerville's other Volnays, it is quite serious in personality and this will oblige cellaring. Quite regal. Drink 2026-2046.

Fairly deep fresh purple, the 2020 Champans has less immediate weight of fruit at first on the nose, than the impressive Taillepieds but I suspect it is all there. Readers will have a fun time debating the relative merits of d'Angerville's 2018, 2019 and 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs in 20 years' time, as for now it is a very close-run thing. The 2020 is certainly superb, wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet cherries, plums and berries mingled with spices, orange zest, peony and discreet hints of oak, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and seamless palate that's bright, elegant and rich but refined. Of the trio, it's probably the 2020 that carries the sunshine and warmth of the vintage the most lightly, even though the year was, on paper, the most extreme. Drink 2030-2060.

The 2020 Volnay Clos des Ducs 1er Cru was picked around 23 August. It has a highly perfumed bouquet with rose petals, red cherries, raspberry and incenses, beautifully defined and wonderfully controlled. The palate also conveys a sense of effortlessness that is utterly beguiling. Very harmonious, balletically-poised thanks to its fine bead of acidity, this Clos des Ducs unfurls in the glass with a lilting, very pure and almost balletic finish. Quite saline on the aftertaste such that it urges you back for another sip. Sophisticated (as usual) yet delicious. Drink 2026-2055.

Pure deep crimson purple. Like the Champans, the nose here is also restrained though obviously with density to follow, when it is ready. The fruit swells across the palate, almost lush in the middle, some tannins too, firm at the finish. This is still very backward and has not completely filled out its framework yet. Maybe just a little riper than the perfect balance. Will be the last to be bottled, and has all the component parts to make a great wine.

The domaine's efforts to protect the 2021 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées were quite successful, so the yield this year is the same as in 2020. The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru is expressive and overtly floral on the nose…just how you want a Vosne to be. It discretely gains intensity in the glass. One of the fuller red purple colours. A most engaging expansive deep cherry fruit. This is close to its magical best, with a volume of fruit which for me sits just right. This is ripe and smoky up front, with a black cherry and mulberry fruit aromas and mineral and earth notes. The texture of the wine is dense and firm but enlivened by the fresh acidity of the 2021 vintage that carries it to a marvelous, lingering finish. The grapes come from Méo’s 0.72-hectare parcel planted in the 1930s. The grapes are destemmed and fermented on native yeasts before ageing in cask (half new). This will show well sooner than the grand crus but should also have the substance to age for several decades. Wonderful wine. Drink 2030 - 2060.

This wine is surprisingly accessible, with a charming, bright pomegranate and ripe cherry fruit, and rose petal, pepper and mineral notes. The texture is silky and fresh – it lacks the imposing density of some years (like 2020), but it is beautiful nonetheless. Méo has 2.75 hectares, second only to Château de la Tour, and the parcels are very well placed in La Garenne (which he calls Pres du Château), Les Chioures, and Grand Maupertuis. The 2021 vintage is a blend of all of the parcels. Drink 2027 - 2055.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.

Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential.
