An up-and-coming wine from Delas is their 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Haute Pierre. Aged in barriques, it is a blend of 60% Syrah and 40% Grenache, which is a little unusual for a Chateauneuf du Pape blend. However, the percentage of Syrah was jacked up to give the wine more texture and richness in a year where the Grenache could occasionally be troublesome. Deep ruby/purple, with oodles of cassis and blackberry as well as some lavender and other floral notes, the wine is full-bodied, opulent, and best drunk over the next 7-8 years.

This great northern Rhone negociant, spearheaded by their brilliant oenologist and winemaker, Jacques Grange, has consistently made fabulous wines from the northern appellations, but only recently upgraded the quality of their southern Rhone selections. These are the finest southern Rhones they have made, and their Cotes du Rhone St.-Esprit ranks alongside the offerings from Guigal and Chapoutier. The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape is a blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah. It reveals a deep ruby/purple color in addition to a gorgeous nose of black fruits, spring flowers, licorice, incense, lavender, and grilled Provencal herbs. Dense, full-bodied, flamboyant, and chewy, with that terrific freshness and purity that characterize this great vintage in the south, it should drink well for 12-15+ years.

The finest wine yet produced by proprietor Philippe Cambie and his partner, Gilles Ferran, this blend of equal parts Mourvedre and Grenache aged 12 months in one-year-old barrels comes from vines in the charming yet spiritual name of Plan de Dieu (Plan of God). Coming from ridiculously low yields of 14 hectoliters per hectare (this is 1/3 the normal production), Philippe Cambie’s 2013 Cotes du Rhone Villages Plan de Dieu is a smashing success in the vintage. JamesSuckling.comAnother beautiful wine from Laurent, his 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape is a classic blend of 82% Grenache, 5% each of Syrah and Mourvedre, and the rest Vaccarese and Counoise, all from the northern part of the appellation, aged in tank. 2009 Domaine Charvin Chateauneuf du PapeChateauneuf du Pape, Southern Rhone, FRANCE$110. 00Bottle$1320.00 DozenABV: 15%Closure: CorkOther reviews... The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape (which tips the scales around 15% natural alcohol) is a great example of traditional Chateauneuf du Pape winemaking. A dense dark ruby color is followed by a sexy nose of raspberries, ground pepper, spice box, damp earth, kirsch and dark currants. Full-bodied, complex, elegant and already irresistible as the tannins have completely melted away, it can be drunk now and over the next 15+ years. Beautifully made, traditional wines emerge from Laurent Charvin’s estate in the northwestern sector of Chateauneuf du Pape, where the family owns 20+ acres of vines. Everything made here is aged in cement tanks. The Chateauneuf du Pape blend tends to be approximately 85% Grenache and the rest equal parts Syrah, Mourvedre and Vaccarese. One of the best buys is Charvin’s delicious Cotes du Rhone called Le Poutet. Last year Laurent Charvin told me he thought that in 2009, the most favored part of Chateauneuf du Pape was the northern sector, and I think there is some truth to that although it was not nearly as evident when I carefully analyzed the tasting notes of the southern parts of the appellation versus the northern parts. Nevertheless, the north was certainly highly successful as was Charvin. 15% Alc./Vol.

Under the helm of Laurent Charvin, Domaine Charvin remains one of the undisputed reference points for classic, traditional, elegantly styled Châteauneuf du Pape today. The style of the wines comes largely from the estate’s location in the cooler, northern parts of the appellation but the consistent quality, year after year, comes from the incredible talent and work ethic of Laurent.
Cut from the same cloth as the 2017, only broader and more expansive, the 2016 Châteauneuf Du Pape ranks with the finest vintages ever produced from this estate. Deep purple-colored with a sensational bouquet of blackberries, currants, ground pepper, crushed violets, and Asian spices, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a layered, multi-dimension texture, incredible elegance, sweet tannins, and a great, great finish. It’s a thrilling wine from a great winemaker. Drink it any time over the coming 20-25 years. Drink 2019-2039.

Deeper, more masculine, graphite-laced and structured, the 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape Deux Ex Machina (60/40 Grenache and Mourvèdre) always shows a huge, meaty, roasted herb, kirsch and darker fruit profile. Like the other 2015s here, it shines for its purity, but this is a big, mouth-filling and unctuous beauty that’s both a hedonistic and intellectual turn on.

Jeb Dunnuck - Wine Advocate #227 (Oct 2016)Saturated ruby. A highly perfumed, complex bouquet displays dark berry compote, cherry pit and Indian spice aromas, along with notes of anise and dried lavender. Seamless and spicy on the palate, offering deeply concentrated, sweet blackberry and floral pastille flavors underscored by a spine of smoky minerality. Velvety tannins build slowly on the penetrating finish, which shows superb clarity and power and leaves behind sappy dark berry and allspice notes.

2009 Domaine Constant Duquesnoy Vinsobres ConfidenceVinsobres, Southern Rhone, FRANCE$36. 99Bottle$443.88 DozenCellar: 3 - 4 Years (2018-2019)ABV: 15%Closure: CorkCambie’s Roll Continues It seems there are no limits to the energy and abilities of Rhone Ranger, Philippe Cambie. The man was proclaimed Oenologist of the Year 2010 by Robert Parker Jr, as a testimony to his performance as a consultant for many top names in the Southern Rhone and other parts of Europe, but also for his own projects (we have already featured - amongst others - the magnificent 'Halos de Jupiter' range, a partnership established with Michel Gassie to showcase the beauty of Grenache). Cambie’s influence continues in 2010 at Domaine Roche and Domaine Constant Duquesnoy. The growing season offered ideal conditions, in contrast with the sun-drenched 2009 vintage that tended towards extrovert, 'blockbuster' styles. The slightly cooler temperatures in 2010 made for a better balance with resulting wines displaying fresher aromatics, tight tannins and a better harmony between alcohol and acidity levels. Gerard Constant stepped out of his managerial career in 2004 to become a vigneron and fully immerse himself in his lifelong passion for all things vinous. Before making such a bold move, he carefully researched and identified regions and sites that would be best suited to respond to future challenges from a climate perspective. Of the sites identified, Constant and his wife Denise Duquesnoy, settled on an already well regarded estate , the Domaine Les Aussellons in Vinsobres, which Robert Parker already considered amongst the top three estates of the appellation. The wines of Vinsobres gained access to Cru status in 2006, elevated from 'Cotes du Rhone Villages Vinsobres' and even though the appellation does not enjoy as much fame as other Crus like Gigondas and Chateauneuf, it has long been known as a source of wines offering great value and pleasure. Since the inception of the new Domaine, Duquesnoy's approach aims for reduced yields, a means to finding the 'sweet spot ' in his terraced vineyards.
Confidence' is from the oldest vines of the estate (55 years) located on the higher part of the appellation (350 metres), being predominantly Syrah with a dash of Grenache for good measure. Maturation took place in "Pieces Bourguignonnes", (228 L barrels purchased from Domaine Denis Mortet in Gevrey-Chambertin) so that oak would not mark the wines too prominently and the fruit and pepperiness could still shine.

Today the domaine is run by siblings Isabelle and Christophe Sabon, each heavily involved in all aspects of production from vineyard to bottling.
