Emilio Lustau Don Nuno Dry Oloroso Sherry
    Jerez, SPAIN
    $47. 99
    Bottle
    $575.88 Dozen
    ABV: 20%
    Closure: Cork

The secret of fine sherry lies in its careful aging and blending. Lustau has perfected their technique and has been producing award-winning sherries since 1896. Aged in American Oak casks for 12 years, this dry oloroso offers appetizing aromas of pecan, walnut and fig, infused with a touch of smoke. Concentrated flavors of roasted nuts, dried fruit and brown sugar are complemented by delicate acidity and a smooth, mellow finish.

Other reviews... "If you are looking for a dry sherry made in a slightly more oxidized style, the non-vintage Dry Oloroso Don Nuno Solera Reserva is your choice. Again, a nuttiness (in this case, walnuts) intermixed with a hint of Chinese black tea combine with salty, caramelized flavors make for a delicious glass of sherry".

A powerful, salty fino made from the Palimino grape. Only the most delicate soleras that remain under flor are bottled as fino. Bright deep straw colour with pale gold hue. Magnificent nose with aroma of nuts, flor yeast and salted roast almonds. The palate is a delight with very distinctive flavours that make this sherry a superb aperitif. The taste of salt hits the palate first and is beautifully integrated by background flavours of flor yeast and almonds. Excellent length, followed by a crisp acid finish and a very long salted almond aftertaste.

Equipo Navazos is perhaps the most significant thing to have happened in the world of Sherry for a very long time. It has some of the most influential people in the fine wine world raving about the quality of these wines, and they are talking about the quality first and the fact that they are Sherries second. These are wines to make Sherry sexy again. They are also as rare as hens’ teeth and are being sought after with the same urgency that wealthy Burgundy collectors seek out the wines of DRC or the greatest Montrachet. This makes sense: these wines are every bit as profound, deep, long and complex as any bottle of DRC (and that is no insult to DRC!)

The Navazos Sherries are drawn from several bodegas, and represent a variety of styles: Manzanilla, Fino, Palo Cortado, Oloroso, Pedro Ximénez, Cream and even a brandy. The wines are bottled in limited series, in successive numbered editions, dated and named “La Bota de….” (the cask of…). The date of each saca, or racking, has been precisely stated on the label so that it is possible to compare editions of the same solera. This also enables precise tracking of the evolution of the wines, as these wines are expected to evolve in the bottle (it’s Sherry, but not as we know it). These are once off bottlings and once the bottles for each La Bota… release are spoken for, there are no more.

The young and tender 2018 La Bota de Manzanilla 111 Florpower MMXVIII was shy and austere, but after bottling (it was bottled in February 2022), it was a bit dizzy in the nose, but the palate shows much better, like many of the 2018 wines I had seen in other bottlings. It's a cooler year with balance and freshness and aging potential. Drink 2022 - 2027.

I tasted the 2018 release of the PX produced for Australia, the NV PX Navazos Gran Solera, a wine that is 25 years old, sweet and intense, aged in sherry casks in an oxidative way. It has some notes of carob beans, roasted coffee and dark chocolate. The palate is thick and dense, with sweetness but without being heavy or cloying. Wines like this are to be consumed in very small doses, and a bottle can go a long way, as the wine is very stable and does not suffer—it even improves—when the bottle is opened. Drink 2019 - 2022.

The extremely old wines are bottled in half bottles, but the NV La Bota de Palo Cortado 86 Bota NO taken from a single cask is not that old; it's around 30 years of age and from Montilla-Moriles, not from Jerez, and therefore produced with Pedro Ximénez grapes (selected because of the variety's purity and finesse) instead of Palomino. It was produced by Pérez Barquero, one of the finest producers in Montilla-Moriles—as the finesse of this wine confirms. This is now 19% alcohol, allegedly from sheer concentration through evaporation. But this is not as concentrated and pungent as the extremely old wines; this feels lighter and more delicate, with the finesse and verticality (even if it was never aged under flor) that is expected from the biological wines. It started its life as an Oloroso, but given that fine character, it was deemed a Palo Cortado. And even within the Palo Cortado, this is extremely elegant. This is a true Palo Cortado, a fine oxidative wine. 1,100 bottles were filled in October 2018.

Light golden brown. Intensely nutty aroma, walnuts, bitter toffee and caramelised bitter orange, with a sour, provocative and beckoning intensity. I wonder if I might even think it was madeira on the nose if I had been given it blind. On the palate, the concentration is immense but there’s none of the bitterness that you sometimes get on very intense and mature sherry. There’s something a little roasted here but not coffee, smoky perhaps. Even with all this concentration, it finishes wonderfully fresh and goes on for ever so that it is almost a chewy food. As it opens, I find something like dried flowers and lavender. Incredibly complex.

Magnificent colour displaying an impenetrable inky black core with an equally dense hue. Still a touch reticent the nose slowly opens to reveal alluring liquorice and confectionary scents which meld into a mix of morello cherry, well integrated spirit and spice notes. Rich, luscious morello cherry and liquorice flavours are backed by rugged, muscly tannins which lend firmness and structure for the long haul. Marzipan, infusions of vanilla and spice ensue. Exceptionally intense and powerful it finishes long, dense and robust.
    Cellar 10-20+ years.

The 2017 Vintage Port, not quite bottled when seen but the final blend, is a field blend (with typical grapes like Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca) aged for approximately 20 months in used French oak. It comes in with 98 grams of residual sugar, a little drier on paper than its Taylor sibling this year. Sappy and sensational in flavor and fruit, this seemingly has moderate tannins around the edges on first taste, velvety texture and a long finish. Despite the first impression of moderation, there is plenty of power here. As it got some aeration, it showed nothing but power and closed down fairly hard. The combination of great fruit and fine structure makes this a potentially great Fonseca, but right now it is obviously immature and not showing everything it has. I'd recommend some patience here.

Picking began at Quinta do Panascal on September 6, the two other quintas in Pinhão that form the 2017 Fonseca Vintage Port, Cruzeiro and Santo António picked on 10 and 17 September respectively. One of the deepest, most opaque color amongst the new Port alumni, it has one of the most backward, almost recalcitrant noses that demands a lot of aeration. It gradually opens to reveal blackberry, melted tar, thyme, clove and violet aromas that are well defined, if maybe just missing the same breeding as Taylor’s. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. This is fresh and detailed, a slightly more structured Fonseca than expected, quite strict at first with good grip and a lightly spiced, precise finish. Powerful and long on the aftertaste, you can feel this Fonseca 60 seconds after the wine has exited. It deserves 10-15 years in bottle. Excellent, but patience required. The most enigmatic of the 2017 Vintage Ports. Total production is 8,100 cases.

Dark and dense, with fig bread, baker's chocolate and tar notes leading off before the core flavors of plum, black currant and blackberry paste finally start to emerge. The wild, spirited finish shows cast iron, licorice snap and roasted alder elements, delivering a decidedly chewy feel. A big, old-school, throwback Port that will age at a glacial pace. Best from 2035 through 2060.

The wine's fine perfumed black plum fruits give a wonderful jammy character while bringing out a fresh edge. These are balanced by the dry core of this beautiful wine with its rich, generous tannins. It will all come together from 2030 in a very fine, integrated wine.

Already beautifully integrated, this is showing great purity and poise. It's open and in its first bloom of youth, with lovely aromatic red berry fruit and floral aromas, plus a touch of leafiness. It's soft and fleshy initially, seemingly not as big as its stablemate Taylor's - and not quite so deep in colour - though with dark chocolate concentration and mid-palate firmness. Lovely full, ripe tannins mass in the mouth, well defined, with fresh berry fruit remerging on the broad, expansive finish.

Deepest purple. Wild, perfectly ripe small black berries like elderberry but also the lush sweetness of ripe blackberries plus a stony, rocky edge and just a touch charry. Lush, plush and exotic on the palate, deep-pile, compact, smooth tannins, just enough freshness to balance the rich generosity. The finish is beautifully dry-tasting, the tannins melting on the long finish.

Sporting an opaque, black-colored robe with dark purple trim, the 2003 Fonseca Vintage Port exhibits a nose of profound depth. Its sweet black mass of dark fruit and spice aromas leads to a character of immense depth, richness, and weight. Full-bodied, viscous, and almost impenetrable, this dense, backward port is powerful and exceptionally long in the finish. Possibly the most masculine Fonseca I’ve ever encountered, it coats the taster’s palate with licorice, jammy black fruits, and notes of chocolate that last for over a minute. This blockbuster will require at least three decades to fully blossom. Anticipated maturity: 2035-2060.

Fonseca was founded in 1822, when Manuel Pedro Guimaraens acquired control of the Fonseca & Monteiro Company through the purchase of the majority of the Fonseca holdings. As a condition of the sale of his shares to Guimaraens, the departing Fonseca stipulated that his name be retained with the brand.

    Absolutely superb!

For political reasons, not long after this purchase, Manoel Pedro Guimaraens was forced to flee Portugal hidden in an empty port wine barrel. He settled in England, where his company remained based until 1927, when the headquarters of the firm returned to Portugal. There remains a remarkable continuity of winemaking within this prestigious house, with Guimaraen's great-great-great grand son, David Guimaraens now responsible for the wines.

Semi translucent deep onion brown colour with onion brown olive green hue. The nose displays a superb refined old brandy spirit top note followed by rancio characters and complexing almond and hazelnut end notes. On the palate there’s flavours of dried raisins, Christmas cake and marzipan followed by some walnut and hazelnut characters with a strong rancio, old brandy spirit overlay. Dry finish with superb spirit integration and an exceptionally long nutty rancio, Christmas cake and marzipan aftertaste.

Galway Pipe 12 Year Old Grand Tawny
    South Australia, AUSTRALIA
    $34. 99
    Bottle
    $419.88 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

Notes sourced from Southern Cross Wines.

Galway Pipe is named after Governor Sir Henry Galway, governor of South Australia from 1914 - 1920. Governor Galway was a frequent visitor to the Yalumba winery and on each visit he would conduct a tasting of the finest 'pipes' (500 litre Barrels) of port. Whichever pipe was most to his liking was inscribed with "Galway's Pipe" and the particular blend was used exclusively at Governor House. The many components of Galway Pipe have an average age of 12 years - the same average age the port has had since Galway's day. On the palate the wine has a high level of sweetness complemented by a relatively low pH and therefore a good level of fresh acidity. This results in a wine that has pronounced aged character but maintains a freshness and a long dry finish - avoiding any cloying character. Quality brandy spirit has added to the complexity on the palate and the wine has a high level of sweetness. 18.5% alcohol volume.

Paler and more evolved colour than the M&S 10 year old tawny port from the Fladgate Partnership (Quinta and Vineyard Bottlers). Much more complex, more concentrated and mature than the M&S 10 year old tawny. Lots of life, transparency and vibrancy. Pretty sweet but good tang and clean freshness on the finish too. My favourite sub-category of tawny as this combines the freshness of youth with complexity of age: lovely reddish-tawny hue with a toffee and dried citrus character on the nose and palate, now smooth and silky with creamy texture (the concentration of age), the sweet fruit (that is the hallmark of Graham’s) offset by a streak of fresh acidity on the finish. The 2016 Vintage Port is a blend of 37% Touriga Nacional, 42% Touriga Franca and various others. It comes in with 115 grams of residual sugar. A bit bigger than Dow's this year, this is more intense as well. The better wine of these two benchmarks seems to be this Graham's. Tight on the finish, aromatic and very flavorful, this actually opens rather well and shows off its lovely fruit. The Dow's will be approachable a bit earlier, perhaps, and this may reward aging even more. As always, Graham's is wonderfully delicious. That's one hallmark of the house. I'm not sure this is a truly great Graham's, but at the moment, it is enticing, with plenty of potential for improvement. Drink 2025 - 2070.

All the Symington wines had exceptionally deep colours. This one has a particularly deep blackish-purple, still with a blueish hue. On the already-expressive nose I found prunes, something floral and a note of balsam, plus lots of freshness. Relatively open on the palate too. Rather elegant and the hugely sweet fruit almost covers a massive charge of silky tannins. This is almost like a sweet, tannic table wine. Pure and polished. Sweeter than most. One of those wines that some people might easily persuade themselves could be drunk relatively young, Satin textured. Drink 2040 – 2065.

    Harvey's Bristol Cream Sherry

    $34. 99
    Bottle
    $419.88 Dozen
    ABV: 17.5%
People with little knowledge of Sherry could be forgiven for thinking that Harvey’s Bristol Cream was actually an English dairy product. Neither the name or the bottle evoke strong images of Spain and her glorious vineyards. There are of course, good reasons for the idiosyncrasies of Harvey’s, the world’s biggest selling sherry brand of all.

Around the turn of 19th century, the port of Bristol in Southwest England was a significant shipping town importing amongst other things, large quantities of sherry. One day, a French lady customer of John Harvey & Sons attended a sherry tasting at their Denmark Street premises in Bristol. There she tasted various samples of what was generically termed “Bristol Milk” – a sweet, rich style of sherry that had become extremely popular in England. She then inquired about another barrel of still richer, more luscious sherry. Upon tasting it, she was overwhelmed. She exclaimed “If that was the milk, then this must be the cream!” So Harvey’s Bristol Cream was born, John Harvey capitalising on her comment by registering it as the company's trademark.

So much for the name. The distinctive blue bottle is a more recent marketing quirk circa 1990. Bristol merchants used to have the exclusive import rights for Saxon Smalt which is used for glassmaking. Containing cobalt, this smalt when combined with British lead glass results in Bristol Blue, the colour we now see in the Harvey’s bottle. It is a symbolic connection with the brands origins, and from a marketing point of view serves as a point of difference on store shelves.

Made from Palomino and Pedro Ximenez grapes, Harvey’s Bristol Cream is fortified with young Jerez brandy. It is then aged and blended like a fino, i.e.- in a solera. This is unique for the area, as most other producers simply use vats. Harvey’s is a particularly full and rich style of sherry with an intense dried fruit/raisin character, a sweet palate and rich lingering finish. Enjoyable straight over ice.

Henriques & Henriques Finest Dry 5 Year Old Madeira (500ml)
    Madeira, PORTUGAL
    $34. 99
    Bottle
    $419.88 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

    BACKGROUND
Our shipment of Henriques and Henriques Madeira has arrived. We have only shipped the relatively young wines which are 5 years old. They are an excellent introduction to the style.
Madeira is produced on the Portuguese island of Madeira. Henriques and Henriques is the largest independent shipper on the island. The company is focused on the premium end of the Madeira market and enjoys a 15% market share. The company takes its name from the two sons of Joao Joaquim Henriques, a descendent of the first King of Portugal.

    LAND HOLDINGS
Vineyard holdings on the island are small, with 4000 growers owning an average 0.5ha each - which by local standards is extensive. Henriques and Henriques also have their own vineyards, 6 hectares at Camara de Lobos (located on the south coast). The company also has 10 hectares at Quista Grande.

    SOIL TYPES
The soils of Madeira are basically volcanic, however, the best soils are a stony decomposed red tufa which is known locally as SAIBRO. The vineyards are planted on very steep terraced slopes.

    GRAPE VARIETIES
The grape varieties are unusual for Australians and include TINTA NEGRA MOLE, TERRANTEL BASTARDO, and either SERCIAL, VERDELHO BUAL or MALVASIA.

    VINIFICATION
The vintage on the Island of Madeira is said to be the longest in the world, starting in mid August with the Malvasia grapes being picked on the lower slopes and slowly progressing through the other grape varieties of BUAL, VERDELHO and SERCIAL. Vintage in the highest vineyards is completed in early November.
The fermentation takes place in temperature controlled, stainless steel tanks. Malvasia and Bual are fermented with limited skin contact, whilst for Verdelho and Sercial, only the pressed juice is used. Fortification takes place with the addition of grape brandy, the amount used and the timing of the fortification depends on the style of Madeira that is being produced.
The majority of young Madeira undergo the "EUSTUFAGEM". This process consists of storing the wine for 3 months in hot conditions with temperatures 45°C. The effect is to mimic the long sea voyages that were a part of the traditional aging process. The best wines are left to age 10 years and more in warm cellars which creates that unique "Maderised" fruit quality.

TASTING NOTE: A superb Madeira. Brilliant gold colour with deep gold hue. The nose displays a very distinctive rancio top note, followed by pronounced notes of honey and walnut. The palate is magnificent with its distinctive Amontillado character. Strong flavours of rancio are intermeshed with walnut, honey and spice to deliver a powerful flavour sensation. Exceptional length, with very long aftertaste of orange rind and just a touch of marmalade.

Keo Commandaria St.John Dessert Wine (500ml)
    Troodos Mountains, CYPRUS
    $46. 99
    Bottle
    $563.88 Dozen
    ABV: 15%
    Closure: Cork

The story behind this unusual wine dates back to the time of the Crusades. The island of Cyprus was then a favourite resting ground for Crusades returning from battle and later became a centre for the Knights of the Order of St.John. It was the members of this order who discovered a wine that was been produced in the Troodos Mountains. This wine they named Commanderie after their headquarters, finding it to be not only an excellent drink but also to possess therapeutic properties.

Estienne de Lusignan described Commandaria St.John in 1572 A.D., recording in his book “Descriptions of the island of Cyprus”: “There is a certain grapevine…which ripens at the end of July, whose grapes are not gathered until the end of September. They [the grapes] are put on the roofs the space of three days…then trodden and the pips and stalks removed before fermentation.”Commandaria St. John is then aged in large earthenware jars buried in the ground and fortified with grape brandy.

    Jerez, SPAIN
    $36. 99
    Bottle
    $443.88 Dozen
    ABV: 15%
As well as having a long history of making sherry and local specialties, like Ponche, there's a tradition of producing vermouth in Jerez. Lustau's is based on an old recipe, starting with high quality sherries to get a more 'natural' character than vermouths fortified with raw alcohol. This Blanco is a perfect example. A blend of two wines - a dry, minerally and crisp Fino sherry and a sweet and floral Moscatel resulting in a Summer sipping vermouth that's brimming with flavour.

Tasting note: Brilliant gold. Fragrant, mildly bitter aroma with a strong herbal accent (gentian, wormwood and thyme) as well as hints of old roses, grapefruit, dried apricot, mixed citrus peel and a touch of cinnamon. Full and fresh in the mouth with a grapey / citrus burst and delicately bitter medley of grassy, herbaceous flavours drying towards the finish. Vibrant and refreshing. Like a dry and a sweet in one. 15% Alc./Vol.

    $479.88 Dozen
    ABV: 15%
A global standard-bearer for high quality Sherry, Lustau has debuted in another category with a delicious Red Vermouth (a white version is on the way). Wormwood, gentian, coriander and orange peel aromas stand out among the array of fragrant plants, fruits and spices featured. Each botanical macerates separately for optimal aroma extraction. Lustau's master blender then combines the botanicals to obtain a perfect blend.

Tasting note: Deep umber brown with Sienna edges. Captivates with semi-sweet yet fresh aromas of grapefruit/orange zest, dried coriander and bitter herbs. Keenly balanced by refreshing acidity, following through with appealing flavours of dried fruits, candied citrus and drying earthy root-like notes in the finish. Concludes fruity, vibrant and long. Delicious. 16% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... An interesting newcomer to the market, the base of this vermouth is rich, nutty Sherry—80% amontillado and 20% Pedro Ximenez, to be precise. It has a coffee-brown hue and a bright dried-herb scent. The palate wows with sticky toffee, dried apricot, orange peel and cocoa. Ideal for adding complexity to drinks featuring dark spirits. 92 points - www.wineenthusiast.com

...It's great to see such a nice vermouth made in Jerez. It's a rather sweet and round version, with delicate herbal notes and great citrus touches. Perfect for cocktails and a great sipping drink on its own. It's here to stay. - www.sherrynotes.com

Named after the native duck found along the Murray River, this medium sweet style was originally produced by Mildara Wines in the early 1950s but ceased in 1998. Ahead of its 65th birthday, the Australian icon has been relaunched by two sherry advocates, Darren Rogers and Peter Stone.

“Our hope is that Chestnut Teal will continue to be appreciated as not only an icon of the Australian wine industry, but as a wonderful drink for any occasion,” Mr Stone said.

He adds, “It was the weapon of choice after work every night.”

The aim has been to recreate the drink in the most authentic manner possible with reports suggesting it looks and tastes identical to the original article. Expect a sweet wine with a drying finish, with flor sherry notes integrated with nutty rancio and a rounded mouthfeel. Maidenii Vermouth is a collaboration between French wine maker Gilles Lapalus and Australian bartender Shaun Byrne. In the creation of Maidenii they have sourced leaves, flowers, fruits, herbs, seeds, spices and roots from the gardens of both the old world and the new. The vital components, wormwood and wine, are plucked fresh from Victoria. Other key ingredients include strawberry gum, river mint, sea parsley and wattle seed.

Shaun has been tinkering behind the bar of Melbourne martini haven Gin Palace for over 5 years. This has helped him nurture his interest in capturing and enhancing natural flavours, arising in house-made concoctions and a sophisticated understanding of palates.

Born of a French wine family, Gilles has wine flowing through his veins. He crossed the globe to take over the position of Winemaker at the dynamic Sutton Grange Winery.

The two were bought together by their love of Vermouth; Gilles bringing with him the traditional alchemy of pastoral Europe to complement Shaun’s knowledge of the vibrant food and drink culture of Australia’s young cities.

Tasting note: Bright crimson / cherry appearance. Moderate aroma issues an attractive combination of citrus peel and black fruits with subtle herbaceous undertones. A soft, silky entry is followed by a light to medium bodied mid palate with semi sweet flavours of blood orange and sweet spices. Finish is gently acidic and cleansing - certainly not overly sweet by any measure. Nicely balanced. Concludes with refreshing grape fruit and dried berry notes followed by a gently bitter fade. A welcome entry into a category that of late has become excessively sweet. 16% Alc./Vol.

The fruitiness comes to the fore after exposure leaning towards stewed apricot / fruit mince pie. Exceptional complexity. The palate is lean, light yet with good depth opening spicy with a dried citrus peel and apricot burst before turning deliciously nutty, spicy and refreshingly acidic towards the finish. Mancino Chinato Vermouth (500ml)
    ITALY
    $52. 99
    Bottle
    $635.88 Dozen
    ABV: 17.5%
A bartender by trade, in 2011, Giancarlo Mancino started working with a small family operated distillery in Piedmont. His aim was to create a range of high quality vermouths. Using a range of botanicals ground in a traditional mill, the ingredients were then steeped in sugar beet spirit to extract the aromas and flavours, before being blended with a local wine base.

Another product that stemmed from these efforts is "Chinato". It is Giancarlo’s hybrid of his three Mancino Vermouths (Secco, Bianco and Rosso) centered on Erede di Chiappone Armando Barbera d’Asti D.O.C.G, with added pure quinine bark. Considered by some as a new tier for the category, it's built on a rich, deep, red, bitter wine base, making for a notable digestive/aperitif. Serve it as an after dinner pairing with fine cheese or dessert, otherwise, perfect chilled, straight up as a digestive, warmed like mulled wine or used as an addition to any Hot Toddy.

    Notes sourced from McWilliam's Wines...

Hanwood Port is a smooth, rich and mellow tawny port. The average age of this blend is 10 years as opposed to 5 years for most other ports. These extra years maturing in small oak casks, combined with six generations of port-making skills perfected by the McWilliam family since 1877, are what make Hanwood such a fine old port. Deep red colour with brown hues. The nose displays complex intense aged rancio characters. The palate is filled with rich fruit and aged integrated spirit. Good length with a mellow soft tannin finish. 18.5% alcohol volume.

Over these 158 years, the Morris family have earned their esteemed position as one of the most prominent winemaking families in Australia. Today, David Morris continues their winemaking history combining tradition with contemporary techniques, ensuring that the Morris name remains one of the Australia’s most iconic and respected wine family dynasties.
Despite the waning interest in fortifieds over the last decade these amazing wines are unique to Australia and internationally renowned treasures that should not be lost to future generations. A warming glass of Muscat or Tokay is indispensable during the winter months.
Totally opaque sienna brown black colour with a deep walnut brown olive green hue. Such is its viscosity that it clings to the side of the glass like paint. Knockout aromatics of toffee, honey and raisins are laced with perfectly integrated spirit. Nuances of marmalade, Christmas cake and spice are also apparent in this very complex sniff. Prodigiously rich with a syrupy like texture, so thick that you could almost eat it with a spoon, the palate is completely saturated with a concentrate of raisin, honey, toffee and maple syrup flavours over traces of marmalade, well integrated spirit and spice. Exceptionally long conclusion of honey, raisins, toffee, marmalade, finely integrated spirit, maple syrup and spice. Pure decadence in a bottle. Alc 17.3%

Other reviews.... The colour is an astounding density. A myriad of dried fruit panettone, lapsang, five-spice, hoisin and roasted walnut doused in espresso and bitter chocolate, reel from a core of thoroughbred intensity. An immense wine that dichotomously, despite its sheer weight, almost evaporates from the tip of the tongue and surfaces of the cheeks, while lingering endlessly.

Almost incomprehensible concentration here. This has a deeply aged, toasty and dark nutty edge on the nose. Roasted honey, dark chocolate, coffee and roasted malt, too. The palate has implausibly concentrated flavors that follow the same threads shown on the nose, all swooningly sweet and rich. Yet, somehow it extrudes and balances to the point of lightness, leaving a trail of long, dark and toasted flavors of almonds. Extremely impressive and complex. Drink now. Screw cap.

This magnificent fortified pours with a thick oil like viscosity. The colour is much deeper than the classic Muscat displaying a totally opaque black sienna brown core with a deep olive green walnut brown hue. The nose is a sniffers paradise, almost hypnotising the olfactory senses with intoxicating aromas of raisins and honey infused with marzipan followed by finely integrated spirit, hints of Christmas cake and marmalade with spicy rancio end notes. Thick oil like texture, the palate painted with incredibly rich and concentrated flavours of honeyed raisins, marmalade, refined spirit, Christmas cake, toffee, rancio characters, marzipan and spice. Good balanced freshness on the finish and beautifully integrated spirit. Exceptionally long conclusion of honeyed raisins, marmalade, Christmas cake, marzipan and rancio characters that stay in the mouth long after swallowing. A vinous steal by any measure.

Like 100 Christmases in the one glass. Ancient material blended across decades and decades, delivering immense depth, layering and complexity. Smells of dark toasted wood, dark chocolate, currants, raisins, plum paste and alluring, fragrant spices. The palate has a smooth, pillowy texture, rich and spicy raisins and ebb and flow of dried-plum flavors, emanating warmth in treasured layers. Drink now. Screw cap.

This has a tsunami of luscious spices, raisins dipped in chocolate, and dried fruit flavours, yet has enhancing freshness, length and a bright finish, rancio in high relief. This Rutherglen muscat has to be given 100 points.

Mr Pickwick's Port is widely regarded as Australia's definitive tawny port. Its average age of over 21 years makes it unique amongst fortified wines consistently available on a commercial basis. Mr Pickwick's Port has the softness and mellow spirit that can only come from great age, premium base material and the very best in fortifying spirit - in this case, old brandy. The colour is pale amber brown, suggesting great age and complexity, while on the nose there are complex fruit and rancio qualities. The concentrated, mature nose has a freshness and lift belying an average of more than 25 years. On the palate the wine is intense and concentrated and quite luscious, with a great richness, texture and mouthfilling flavour. Its excellent and mature spirit add to the depth and intrigue presented by such old, rare port. 19.0% alcohol volume.

    Notes from producer....
Our LBV is aged for 4 to 6 years in large wooden vats. The winemaking and ageing methods were chosen to match the selection of wines which make up the LBV: full-bodied red Ports stemming from a single vintage. LBV or Late Bottled Vintage is a category of Port wines which became popular in the 60s, filling the gap between Ruby and Vintage Ports. The extended ageing period of the LBV allows it to show a rounder and mature character –this wine can therefore be enjoyed young, soon after bottling.
The 2018 harvest will be remembered for its record low yields in the vineyard and atypical weather. The winter was cold and dry, while Spring and early Summer were very wet and relatively cold, which led to a delay in the vegetative cycle as well as problems with mildew in this region. In addition to these challenges, there was a dramatic hailstorm at the end of May and a heat wave in the last few days of July.
August was hot, with hot and dry weather conditions for the whole duration of the harvest, which started at Vale de Mendiz on 6 September.
Violet glints appear in this wine’s intense ruby red hue. The nose reveals aromas of fruits of the forest, spices and figs. On the palate, you will find Niepoort’s quintessential structure and elegance. It sets off on sweet notes but finishes dry, with a surprisingly assertive acidity. This Late Bottled Vintage is one of the few wines in its category that is bottled with a real cork instead of a bar top closure. At Niepoort, this means that this Port can already be enjoyed in its youth or left to mature in the bottle for many years.

White Port is made from white grapes: Malvasia, Viosinho and Gouveio. The juice is fermented as a white wine until the fermentation is stopped by the addition of pure grape brandy. After spending one year in large wood vats the wine is transferred to Casks (550 liter oak barrels). It is then aged in wood until at least 3 years before bottling. Deep gold, with nuts and hints of fruit fresh aroma and half sweet taste. Serve chilled as an aperitif or with desserts or even by itself.

Ruby Port is a delicious style of young and fruity fortified. Aged for an average of three years, Niepoort sources grapes for this wine from old vineyards in Cima Corgo region of Douro Valley. Ruby keeps well for several years, although the wine will not improve with age. Decanting is not necessary since the wine contains no sediment. Serve after a meal, by itself or with soft cheese.

In 1800, Joseph Noilly decided to break with tradition. He began producing the first ever Dry Vermouth to compete with the sweet Italian ‘Turin’ styles. He achieved this by making three fundamental changes to the method of vermouth production. The first change involved the addition of local flowers and fruits to his original recipe of 20 herbs. The second saw to the use of dry wines made from the Picpoul and Clairette grapes from the Languedoc. After macerating and blending, the third point of difference was to adopt a ‘new’ method of ageing which was known locally as "vin cuit" (‘cooked wine’.) This essentially involved transferring the wine into small oak barrels to be left outdoors. This exposure to climatic extremes lasts 12 months and actually speeds the wines aging process by up to four times. The barrels are finally emptied into huge blending vats, fortified and then left a further twelve months to marry before bottling.

    Oscar.697 Bianco Vermouth (750ml)
    ITALY
    $39. 99
    Bottle
    $479.88 Dozen
    ABV: 16%
Produced in Canelli, in the province of Asti in the Piedmont region in Italy’s north-west, this fairly new Vermouth brand is the brainchild of three drinks experts: Stefano di Dio, Oscar Quagliarini (the brand’s namesake who created the recipe for the vermouth) and Oreste Sconfienza, a vermuttista who’s been making Italian vermouth since the late 1950s. Sleek contemporary packaging belies a traditional production method that follows the guidelines for Vermouth set out by the Italian authorities. Trebbiano di Romagna, a white variety from central Italy (selected for its neutrality) makes up 75% of the mix with the remaining 25% being a maceration of botanicals in high ABV neutral spirit.

The Bianco offers strong notes of bergamot, yarrow muscat and elderflower. The sugar level is kept relatively low (14%) to ensure the final product is drier and slightly more bitter than most other examples. Recommended in a spritz or with white spirits such as gin, tequila and pisco.

A superb aged Tawny that if tasted alone would be regarded as the ultimate expression of a fortified wine, however, on the day it was tasted alongside the extraordinary Seppelt DP 90 Rare Tawny – which is an absolute must. Very deep orange onion brown colour with deep olive green rim. The nose is distinctive with strong rancio notes followed by walnuts and very fine aged brandy. The palate is mouthfilling with complex layers of walnuts, new leather and spice over a strong rancio background. Exceptional length. Perfect balance – wonderful harmony of flavours followed by an exceptionally long rancio almond and walnut aftertaste.

Readers can take their pick, but the difference in price might ensure that the Grandfather Tawny Liqueur is the way to go. Amazingly rich and honeyed with hints of figs, prunes, caramel, and toffee, it is a gorgeous, brilliantly made fortified wine composed of Shiraz and Mourvedre. This brilliant fortified is remarkably light on its feet given its massive richness. Thank good winemaking, great natural extract, and zesty acidity for keeping this wine fresh in spite of its huge residual sweetness and power.
