Riesling

One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners.

A magnificent Eden Valley Riesling that boasts terrific fruit intensity, tension and textural volume.
Fruit was sourced from the Mason, Schubert and Stephens family vineyards with vines planted in 2001, 1961 & 1971 respectively. Brilliant water like colour with a distinctive greenish tinge to the edges. Intense lime, citrus and green apple scents are intermeshed with orange rind, talc and steely mineral notes. Super scrumptious, the palate possesses outstanding concentration, power and textural volume with steely mineral infused acidity providing tension. Lime, citrus and orange rind flavours completely engulf the mouth with green apple and chalky talc characters flowing through the back half. Mouth wateringly long it finishes dry and crunchy with terrific intensity.

Sadly, we lost John Vickery last year. The year this wine was produced. He was a titan of riesling in Australia and a wonderful fella to boot. The focus, precision and velocity of this wine is something else. Pristine lime and green apple notes, lightly cloaked in tones of jasmine and Christmas lily with hints of crushed quartz and fennel. There's a scorching cadence across the palate, steely and dry with a distinct riverstone savoury finish and shimmering minerality. Vale John. Drink by 2035.

Soaring from the glass are intense lime, citrus and orange rind aromas which are trailed by some distinct talc, green apple and chalky mineral notes. The palate is a mouth watering explosion of lime and citrus fruit which combines textural volume with serious power. Some green apple, orange rind, chalky talc and mineral characters also chime in. Tasted from a special magnum commemorating the 10th anniversary of this sub-regional release. The fruit is from several vineyard sources, with some of the material dating back to plantings from 1975. Quintessential Clare Valley riffs on Rose’s lime juice, quince paste, tonic, preserved lemon rind, wild fennel and gardenias. Dry and medium-bodied by virtue of the sheer extract and density of the mouthfeel. Yet despite the dryness, there is nothing hard. Tactile and impressively juicy across a tenacious finish. Impressive. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Brilliant very pale straw colour with distinct highlights of green around the edges and a watery hue. Intense lime and lemon butter like scents intermix with oily toast, citrus and subtle kerosene notes. Concentrated lime and lemon fruits are the flavour drivers and show plenty of textural volume across the palate. Lingering underneath are some oily kerosene like characters, toast and flint. Finishes dry with crisp acidity and a long generous aftertaste.

Straw in the glass with aromas of Bickford’s lime cordial, green apple, drying hay, marzipan, crushed quartz, pressed white flowers and river stone. As much as I enjoyed their Watervale Reserve, I love this even more. A small parcel of fruit from the Zander Quarry vineyard was put aside to make their Reserve. The extra ageing potential it offered set it apart from the rest of the fruit. Hence, it was given an extra two years in the cellar by the team prior to release but will benefit from plenty more. A vibrant green/gold. This is a glorious Riesling nose. Spices, lemon sherbet notes, limes, florals. Just gorgeous, fine and focused with excellent length and crunchy acidity before lingering beautifully on the finish. A really good Riesling, thrilling now, but even better with another decade under its belt. As would be easy to imagine, at the end of a tasting session, there are plenty of wines from which one can select for a glass that evening. This was an easy choice. Drink 2022-2032.

What’s better than one great vintage? Two great vintages in a row. Clare Valley winemakers must be wondering what they did right to earn two fantastic years side by side: 2021 and 2022. Riesling lovers are in seventh heaven. In the hands of masters like Keeda Zilm and the legendary John Vickery, great fruit becomes great wine. The Vickery Watervale Riesling ’22 is a real beauty. Intense, aromatic and in balance with citrus blossom, lime cordial, grapefruit and green apple layers underscored by taut acidity. Just grape, acidity and a little alcohol (12%), nothing else. What a magical mix. Precision plus, and all the ingredients are here for a long life. Drink 2022-2032.

Brilliant very pale straw colour with a very distinct glimmer of green skirting the edges and a watery hue. Intense lime and citrus aromas are married to green apple and oily toast like notes with some steely kerosene like scents also evident. Mouth watering lime and green apple fruits overlay lightly honeyed toast like characters, subtle lemon butter, wet steel and emerging kerosene. Beginning to fill out texturally it possesses excellent concentration, crisp acidity and finishes long and scrumptious.

Clare Valley Vs Eden Valley riesling . . . what region comes out on top in this traditional and long-running battle for supremacy? Well, both do, of course. However, in this particular battle between the 2019 Vickery Eden Valley and 2019 Watervale rieslings, my heart – and top score – goes to the latter. There’s a brightness, freshness and energy in the Watervale riesling that is quite exciting. It’s looking younger, more vital than its Eden Valley sibling, juicier, too. It’s of a different style to be sure. I would drink the Watervale minus food and bring the Eden Valley out with something nice to accompany its richness.
The Watervale 2019 brings lifted apple blossom spring scents and grapefruit, concentrated Clare-style lime and citrus. There’s the merest hint of age emerging as you work through brisk, bright flavours of custard apple, mandarin skin, a touch of buttered toast and enveloping citrus. There’s a developing complexity here so it’s starting to reveal itself. It will also age well. Drink 2022-2035.

It's really, really hard to put this wine down. Expect to be wooed by the fragrance as much as the palate. A perfect blend of freshness and pulsing acidity, with some complexity of age starting to unfurl: preserved lemons with ginger spice, candied lime jellies, buttered toast and lime marmalade. The 2021 vintage produced wines of exceptional quality from Eden Valley. The season started with promising rainfall and idyllic winter conditions. The following Spring and Summer were dry, once again with below average rainfalls which resulted in lower-than-average yields. The resulting wines are delicate and expressive, with bright natural acidity and intense flavours.
Brilliant water like colour with a very faint tinge of green around the outskirts. Intense lime and citrus aromatics are followed by orange rind, talc and chalky mineral notes. Concentrated lemon and lime fruits engulf the mouth underpinned by crunchy acidity. Notions of orange rind, chalky talc characters and flinty minerals ensue. Finishes dry and snappy with a long zesty aftertaste.

From the exceptional 2017 vintage, a small parcel of fruit from the Koerner ‘G6 Block’ stood out for its unique character and potential for ageing, and was kept separate from the main Watervale blend to produce this Reserve Riesling. Bottle aged for 30 months prior to release.

Brilliant very pale straw colour with reflections of green around the outskirts and a watery hue. Intense lime, lemon and orange rind aromas are complexed by elements of light oily toast, wet steel and minerals. Superbly concentrated flavours of lime, citrus and orange rind create a sense of fullness across the mid palate. Racy, structured and intensely flavoured, this is a standout Eden Valley Riesling.

Despite overall generally warmer conditions in 2018, Riesling proved to be the vintage highlight due to surprisingly high natural acidity. Brilliant water like colour with a distinctive greenish tinge around the outskirts. Powerful lemon and lime aromas dominate the nose with orange rind, talc and mineral notes also evident. Showing fantastic drive are racy lemon, lime and orange rind flavours that are just as intensely flavoured as the Watervale but more tightly structured. Elements of chalky talc and flinty mineral characters follow on. Crunchy acidity leads into a long lip smacking lemon, lime, subtle orange rind, chalky talc and mineral laden finish. Outstanding.

This has a lifted flowery nose with fresh as well as dried floral nuances, a hint of lavender talcum powder. There really is a lovely array of aromatics here. The palate is likewise wonderfully floral, fragrant, open and accessible. An utterly delicious wine.

Dried flowers, toast and some early development to sniff. The colour is light straw-yellow, also seeming a tad forward. It’s a soft, dry, slightly fuller flavoured wine, with a youthful crispness and good balanced acidity. This has some richness as well as grip and density, and would handle stronger foods.

Vignerons Schmölzer & Brown is the partnership of winemaker-viticulturist Tessa Brown and architect Jeremy Schmölzer, crafting wines from high-altitude vineyards in Beechworth and the King Valley. Their estate vineyard, Thorley, sits over 700m ASL and is farmed with organic practices in all but the most challenging years. Working with minimal intervention, they focus on purity, balance, and drinkability. The range includes single-site wines from Thorley, Brunnen, and Obstgarten, as well as their approachable Prêt-à series.
From Whitlands’ second-highest altitude Riesling vineyard (800m), planted in the late 1980s by the Croucher family among orchards and walnut trees. These mature, unirrigated, close-planted vines yield naturally high-acid, late-ripening fruit. Crafted in a German Trocken style, this single-site Riesling is crisp, pure, and aromatic, with the precision, lift, and minerality that only high-altitude viticulture can deliver.

“Kabinett” ripeness with a portion of skin contact to build texture. King Valley riesling gets serious and it's next level stuff. There's a super fineness of expression, a delicacy, a purity to be explored here. Bristles in grapefruit, lemon fruits and green pear, lifted nicely by white florals and a splash of spice. Dry and crisp with filigree fine acidity. Drink 2025-2034.

This is a dry riesling though there’s plenty of give, or body, to the fruit. In fact in riesling terms it’s big on texture, and with it an associated impression of character. It tastes of lime, orange, slate, tonic water and fennel, with crushed herb and floral characters an important part of the wine’s show, as indeed is a yeasty hay-like note. It feels both clean and dirty, in a good way. It has excellent intensity and length. Drink 2025 - 2031+

This is understandably nervy on opening but is quick to settle into a harmonious mix of homemade lemonade, tonic, lime pith, Makrut lime leaf and peach blossom start, followed by subtle nashi pear, green apple, slate, chalk and a glimmer of cinnamon. It’s zesty, lifted, fresh and bright. The palate balances texture and tautness nicely, with 5 grams of residual sugar here sitting in wonderful balance. Lemon rind and green apple sit above hints of white peach and kumquat with a shot of mineral presence through the core and a nice bite of preserved lemon phenolics gripping the sides and drawing length. Classic acidity cleans up and elongates the zesty fruit. The wine’s purity, texture, sugar and structure work together to make a Riesling of balance and interest. Another strong release. 210 dozen bottled.

There’s Germanic (or Austrian) inspiration in this wine and it holds 25 grams of sugar, and well.
Juicy, fresh, vibrant wine. Has some nice slipperiness to texture, ripe green apple, light honey notes, crunchy acidity. It moves across the palate with a clip, shows tingly acidity to close. It has high (and wild!) drinkability written all over it. It’s well-judged in acid and sugariness. It’s a good wine.

The 2017er Saar Riesling (as it is indicated on the consumer label) comes from the Wiltinger Klosterberg, Krettnacher Euchariusberg and Oberemmeler Karlsberg, and was fermented down to barely off-dry levels (17 g/l of residual sugar). This offers a beautifully racy and comparatively pure nose of pear, vineyard peach, white flowers, some herbal elements and smoky slate. The wine is beautifully light-footed and playful on the nicely zesty and delicately creamy palate and leaves a nicely fruity and mouthwatering feel in the long and engaging finish. This is a gorgeous off-dry Riesling to enjoy mindlessly over the coming years. Now-2022.

From a picture-book vintage with an inhomogeneous flowering in later June and picked over two weeks between September 24 and October 7th (beautiful sunshine all the time), the Siefersheim 2020 Heerkretz Riesling GG opens with a discreet but deep and substantial, finely mineral or herbal and flinty/reductive bouquet with intensity and sur lies notes as well as those of broken stones. Round, refined and very elegant on the palate, with fine tannins and crystalline, saline acidity, this is a generous but classical Heerkretz of great substance and mouth-tickling grip and acidity. Fruity and non-fruity components are in superb balance here, and the finish is salivating. I wish I had some bottles of this wine in my cellar. Do not pass up buying it if you ever have the chance. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted from magnum in August 2023. Drink 2023 - 2050.

This is so delightful in the nose, but there are so many dimensions to the aromas that it's not easy to grasp this, without sinking into this enormously complex wine. The aromas range from leaves and flowers, dripping after a tropical downpour, to ripe stone fruit, all the shades of citrus zest and delicate spice Tightly wound on the very concentrated, silky palate with minerality that's almost off the scale. So saline and so mouthwatering at the super-long finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

‘My first attempt at riesling. No idea who to make it so I rang a good mate Tom Barry. Said if you have some old foudre just press it dirty, minimal clarification and ferment it in the old large vat. That’s what we did, sees 12 hours skin contact, then fermented in Austrian foudre’. Pretty much ideal from where I sit! Though I’d probably go to 48 hours skin contact, but hey… anyways, what a coup. From Yea Valley.
Stellar drinking, easy appeal, riesling DNA strong and lots of character and detail on offer. For the acid hounds amongst us, the acidity is super bright. For those seeking textural oomph and grip, that’s there too. For those after perfume, juiciness, a cavalcade of mixed citrus fruit, juice and pith, well, guess what, its also in the mix. It’s quite a bold expression in all this going on. And in that, complex, energetic, wickedly drinkable and generally very clever as a wine. At $20 RRP? Pretty much the best riesling in the country from where I sit. Ludicrous! Drink 2022 - 2030.

The DJW vineyard was planted by John and son Daniel Wilson in 1997. At the time, the aim was to produce additional fruit for the successful Wilson Polish Hill River Riesling but the vineyard had other ideas. From the first vintage it was immediately obvious that the DJW vineyard was quite different from the Polish Hill River vineyard. The grapes and bunches were larger and the vineyard produced a spectrum of flavours that had their own unique qualities. As a consequence a new Riesling was born and was named after the single vineyard from where it originates, the DJW.
Brilliant water like core with highlights of green around the outskirts. Intense lime juice, lemon and orange rind aromas bound out of the glass with terrific intensity complimented by some talc, green apple and slatey mineral notes. Engulfing the mouth watering palate are concentrated lime juice and citrus flavours which are wrapped up in a chalky texture that carries plenty of volume. Engaging chalky talc, orange rind, wet steel and flinty mineral elements lie underneath. Zingy acidity with a long forceful and highly energised finish.

The DJW vineyard was planted by John and son Daniel Wilson in 1997. At the time, the aim was to produce additional fruit for the successful Wilson Polish Hill River Riesling but the vineyard had other ideas. From the first vintage it was immediately obvious that the DJW vineyard was quite different from the Polish Hill River vineyard. The grapes and bunches were larger and the vineyard produced a spectrum of flavours that had their own unique qualities. As a consequence a new Riesling was born and was named after the single vineyard from where it originates, the DJW.

Brilliant water like core with greenish tinged edges. Uplifted lime juice, green apple and orange rind scents fill the nostrils followed by light talc and mineral notes. The palate carries great power boasting intense lime, citrus and orange rind fruits which sit over a back drop of talc, sherbet and subtle slatey mineral characters. Fresh crunchy acidity leads into a long mouth watering finish of lime, lemon sherbet, orange rind, talc and slate.

From Wilson’s oldest vineyards in Polish Hill River planted 40 years ago this is a tight, steely Riesling loaded with minerality. Brilliant pale straw colour with a distinct tinge of green to the outskirts and a watery hue. Intense aromatics of lime juice, lemon and green apple are trailed by orange rind, light talc and stony mineral nuances. Driving the palate are focused lime juice and green apple flavours which are underscored by citrusy orange characters, wet steel and flinty mineral nuances. Finishes dry with a fine spine of crunchy acidity leading into a long tightly knit finish.

Riesling is thought to have been introduced to New South Wales in the 1830s by the Macarthur's (pioneers of the Australian wool industry). German settlers brought the variety to the Barossa Valley in South Australia in the 1850's where the grape flourished. It's since found many new homes, such as Mt. Barker in Western Australia, the Clare Valley in South Australia, as well as Central and Southern Victoria. A tightrope of fruit and racy acidity when young, age-worthy examples develop honey and toast characteristics, sometimes accompanied by a distinct 'kerosene' note. Generally suited to cooler climates, examples from Grosset, Petaluma, Wilson Polish Hill, Dukes, Western Australia and Best's Great Western, Victoria are all worth seeking out.
