Riesling
One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners. Browse our top rated Riesling wines here.

The 2018 Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Spätlese is very intense and aromatic on the dense and voluptuous nose. Lush and creamy on the palate, this is a generous and dense, lush and persistent Brücke Spätlese with remarkable freshness and piquancy. It's pretty straight and piquant, with remarkable finesse and mineral tension. Tasted in July 2019.

Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Oct 2019)White peach, quince and red raspberry give an impression on the nose and the creamy, polished palate of both jellied and fresh fruits. An influx of lime serves for welcome, animating brightness, and the penetratingly sustained, mouthwateringly salt-tinged finish is transparent to wet stone, setting up a shimmering fruit–mineral exchange.

2023 Dr Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Alte Reben Riesling Grosses GewachsMosel, GERMANY$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
The 2023 Wehlener Sonnenuhr GG Alte Reben is clear and coolish on the subtly flinty or smoky, (blue/gray) slate-driven and lemony nose that is rather discreet given the ancient age of most of the vines but very deep on the other hand. Round, lush and savory on the palate, this is a full-bodied, tight, still very young and rather farouche Sonnenuhr that can be irresistibly charming in its youth. However, the 2023 remains shy in flavors, whereas it remains seriously complex and persistent in structure and terroir expression. The 2023 is a rich and salivating, still tannic but also concentrated long-distance runner from one of the most famous sites along the Mosel River. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in December 2024. Drink 2028-2055.

2017 Dr Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Im Laychen Alte Reben Reserve Riesling Grosses GewachsMosel, GERMANY$245. 00Bottle$2940.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkDr Loosen is one of the most respected names in the Mosel, and has been in the same family for over 200 years. Current custodian Ernst Loosen works with some of the finest vineyards in the area, and since 2011 he has pushed the boundaries further in an attempt to better express three unique terroirs. Working with Wehlener Sonnenuhr (blue slate), Urziger Würzgarten (red volcanic soil), and Erdener Pralat (red slate), the Grosses Gewachs Reserve wines hail from the finest parcels of ungrafted vines in each vineyard. Fermentation occurs naturally as with the regular GG wines, however the wines are held on full lees for 24 months, before an additional 24 months in bottle. This additional maturation approach lends greater balance and a deeper degree of vineyard expression to these wines.
Wehlener Sonnenuhr is one of the most iconic vineyards in the area, with its steep blue slate slopes and eponymous sundial a beacon for the area. Wines from here are often some of the finest and most elegant expressions of Riesling, and with age further express their mineral slate origins.

Aged on the full lees for 24 months, the 2017 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Im Laychen Réserve Alte Reben offers a clear, deep, elegant and flinty bouquet with nutty sur lie and concentrated fruit aromas with lemony nuances. Crystalline, refined yet also intense and complex on the palate, the 2017 Laychen Réserve from the original Sonnenuhr combines intensity and texture with finesse, salinity and delicate lemon notes, and it paves the palate with fine tannins and lush, slowly maturing fruit. 12.5% stated alcohol. Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Aug 26, 2022)A touch of beeswax and dried lemon peel flickers on the shy nose of 2017 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Grosses Gewächs Alte Reben Réserve. It was harvested in the Laychen parcel from ancient vines of up to 130 years of age. More air intensifies these notions that continue right through onto the palate. The body is concentrated, sinuous, elegant and comes with a flavor suggesting lemon-scented stearin, imbued with salty notions and lovely highlights of ripe, juicy lemon. The result is a wine that seemingly draws you down into stony depth. Vivid, smooth, poised, juicy and mellow, despite the bright lemon notes. Elixir-like. (Dry). Drink 2023-2050.

Erdener Prälat is perhaps the greatest vineyard in the Mosel region. It benefits from its 45° slope with perfect southern exposure, red slate soil and proximity to the river. All these factors, combined with its position below huge, heat-retaining cliffs, explain why Dr. Loosen never harvests anything less than Auslese ripeness from this site.

JamesSuckling.comIn reviewing the “regular” vintage 2015 Erdener Prälat Reserve, I looked forward comparing the eventual Reserve bottling, and expressed “my hunch ... that the latter will prove not just more expressive in its early years but also longer-lived.” Well, that time is here, and at least in terms of expressiveness, this tasting unfortunately failed to confirm my hunch. This Reserve appears less successful than the “regular” Grosses Gewächs in reflecting Loosen and Schug’s determination (beginning with 2004) to capture an animation and dynamic exchange of flavors in all of their Prälat bottlings that were missing when the site was getting picked later and based more on achieving high must weight. The nose here shows an oxidative tendency that I haven’t noted in other Loosen Reserve bottlings, though in itself, I don’t consider that a problem. Prickly notes of lemon and kumquat zests, along with an incisive note of white pepper, are very much in keeping with how the “regular” Grosses Gewächs performed in its youth. But smoky black tea and Latakia tobacco, along with suggesions of wet stone, moss and lichen, take the nose here to a new level of complexity. So far, so good – very good, in fact. Furthermore, the midpalate comes off as slightly slimmer as well as more texturally refined than that of the regular bottling, which might in part be a function of alcohol having been blown off by an additional year in cask, but also and in large part of lees buffering. It’s the finish of this Reserve – though impressive in its sheer persistence – that I find a letdown. A slightly dank alkaline and mossy impression seems to be all that remains of those elements that the nose led one to anticipate, and there is a sense of opacity, with only modest primary juiciness. “This is just Prälat being Prälat,” insisted Loosen, “and it needs time to come back.” As for longevity, that must obviously also remain an open question. David Schildknecht - VinousThe 2015er Erdener Prälat Reserve Alte Reben, as it is referred to on the main label (the reference to GG is left for the back label), is made from very old un-grafted vines and was fermented in oak with ambient yeasts and aged on its gross lees for 24 months before being bottled. It offers a captivatingly aromatic and smoky nose of lime, pineapple, prune, spices, herbs, a hint of camphor, licorice, and tar. The wine is very compact and has great dry extract, but also a smoother and softer side on the palate as ripe and even exotic fruits join the party. The finish is superbly long and structured, with a touch of power in the background. This is already very impressive but has clearly upside potential as it will gain finesse over the years. Drink 2023-2035.

More exotic than Dr. Loosen's other 2016 auslese and a bit more opulent too, but it also has a very serious structure that drives the powerful finish. Drink from 2020 to 2060.

Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comThis offers a gorgeous nose of almond, pear, candied orange zest, a hint of pineapple, coconut minty herbs and spices. The wine develops a smooth and creamy feel on the palate and leaves a delicately powerful feel of herbs and spices in the long and superbly intense finish. This beautifully baroque expression of Auslese GK is still rather bold and will need a little bit of time to fully develop its inner balance. 2026-2046.

Jean Fisch & David Rayer - Mosel Fine WinesWhether it’s a function of the site or of the level of botrytis, this leaves behind the primary juiciness that characterized the “regular” Loosen Auslesen of the vintage. But it’s lovely nonetheless. Orange and muskmelon are mingled with decadent lily, headily sweet gardenia and musky peony both on the nose and on an expansive, glycerol-rich palate loaded with inner-mouth perfume. That perfume, like the wine’s ripe fruit flavors, lingers impressively, if without much animation. (This was bottled shortly after my late July 2017 visit.)

This 2022 Magpie Hill Reserve Riesling is the first under new ownership, and it leads with a distinctly different nose than usual. It's challenging to pin down, but here goes: in place of the pristine white flowers and talc that is expected, there is swirling ash/embers, straw/hay, bison grass and graphite/bitumen and a pronounced petrichor/ozone character leads the charge. Behind it are pencil shavings, Dispirin (aspirin), the crackle of summer grass and oxalis. It's salty and mineral, gray and rocky, austere and sleek. Whether it's the season or not, this is a change in style for the Magpie Hill Reserve. Very different indeed. Drink 2022-2037.

Erin Larkin – Robert Parker’s The Wine AdvocateSmoky struck-flint reduction at first sniff then a suite of fruit aromas gradually unfolds, floral, mineral, green apple and lemon to the fore. The wine is tightly wound and very restrained, delicate and tense, needing time to emerge fully. Lively acidity is neatly integrated into the wine. A long-term wine for sure, a style that needs time and will richly reward even a few years cellaring.

The 2021er Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett is a barely fruity-styled wine with a bright white-yellow color and a stunningly pure nose of white peach, citrusy fruits, white flowers, smoke, and a subtle dash of whipped cream. The wine proves stunningly vibrant on the almost off-dry tasting palate and leaves great notes of fresh herbs and spices in the long finish. The aftertaste is to die for as it proves airy, elegant, precise, and incredibly persistent. What a great success! The only downside is that one will need to be a bit patient and give the wine a few years in the bottle in order to allow it to integrate the touch of tartness currently floating around. Even as we get to Spätlese level in the present collection, there is a delightfully cooling aspect to the 2020 Riesling Wiltinger Braune Kupp Spätlese A.P. #5 Le Gallais, here engendered by pear and honeydew melon laced with brown spices, but also lime, mint and basil. The buoyant midpalate impression is succulent as well as silken, with suggestions of quince preserves and marzipan emphasizing the ripeness and very lightly botrytized nature of the fruit without sacrificing the cooling elements or citric brightness. Somehow the lusciously lingering finish manages to be stimulating yet soothing and caressing. Citrus zest, cinnamon and mace serve for welcome counterpoint, but here is one of those rare instances at this address where I have the impression of slight excess sweetness that needs time to integrate. 2022 Georg Breuer Pfaffenwies RieslingRheingau, GERMANY$195. 00Bottle$2340.00 DozenABV: 11.5%Closure: CorkGeorg Breuer estate was founded in 1880 as part of a wine merchant company, and has been owned by the Breuer family since the beginning of the 20th century. Georg Breuer enlarged the estate and increased the export of wines. His sons Bernhard and Heinrich and later Bernhard’s daughter Theresa expanded the vineyard size to 40 hectares in the best Rüdesheim, Rauenthal and Lorch sites. Theresa Breuer was thrust into the business after the sudden passing of her father in 2004, and through tireless work and dedication is now one of the most respected winemaking forces in Germany. The estate's focus is on top dry Riesling wines from the unique terroir of the Rheingau valley, and Breuer's flagship crus are Rüdesheim Berg Schlossberg and the 12.5-acre monopole, Rauenthal Nonnenberg.
The vineyard site Pfaffenwies was initially mentioned as ‘pafenwies’ in documents from 1211, and later as ‘pfaffenwissen’ (1235). It was named after Pastor Dydo, also known as ‘Pfaffe’. This steep site has a gradient of up to 45% and is situated between 90 to 160m above sea level. The soil is a combination of stony Hunsrück slate and Taunus quartzite, with loess in the lower parts. Riesling from this area is characterised by great elegance as well as pronounced acidity and minerality.

Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Dec 30, 2023)The 2022 Riesling Lorcher Pfaffenwies was harvested across six different parcels within this southwest-facing site, dating to the mid-1960s, ranging from slate closer to the river and more quartzite toward the forest. Theresa calls it a “complete picture of the vineyard.” It's fermented in Stück and Halbstück. The nose opens with a juicy yellow plum, a frisson of crushed yarrow and rock dust. The palate is concentrated and has something salty, insistent, mouth-watering and savory. Lemony brightness comes with a slight sense of lemon pith and crushed yarrow spice. It's very clear-cut, subtly nutty on the finish with much brightness and understated substance. (Bone-dry)

2020 Georg Breuer Berg Rottland RieslingRheingau, GERMANY$165. 00Bottle$1980.00 DozenABV: 12%Closure: CorkGeorg Breuer estate was founded in 1880 as part of a wine merchant company, and has been owned by the Breuer family since the beginning of the 20th century.
Parcels of the Berg Rottland vineyard site stretching into the village of Rüdesheim predominantly consist of deep loess soils. Elsewhere shallow, gravely soils emerging from slate and sandstone prevail. Yields are very low, at about 25 hl/ha.

The 2020 Berg Rottland is deep, intense and pure on the nose, with notes of melted stones and ripe, elegant and flinty fruit. Full-bodied, round yet pure and crystalline on the palate, this is an intense yet refined and elegant Berg Rottland that represents the warmth of the vintage and lifted by the power of the terroir, which consists of slate and quartzite soils of this steep and south-facing cru on the first two lower sections of the mountain. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in July 2022. Drink 2022 - 2050.

Very fine, peachy fruit. Enormous finish that’s so bright. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Drink or hold.

2023 Grosset Alea RieslingClare Valley, South Australia, AUSTRALIA$47. 99Bottle$575.88 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: StelvinAlea Riesling is crafted from Grosset's six-hectare estate-owned Certified Organic and Biodynamic Rockwood vineyard at Watervale in the Clare Valley. The isolated, high-altitude site, chosen and planted by Grosset between 2001 and 2018, consists of hard red rock and variable soils making it a much more challenging site than the Springvale vineyard close by. Grosset noticed the first harvests from this site were reminiscent of European Rieslings with a hint of residual sweetness. Inspired by this, he made the first 'Alea,' taking a more European approach to its production.
Other Reviews....
A dainty riesling, tiptoeing across a crunchy beam of Granny Smith apple, jasmine, Thai herb and lime splice. Peppery, sulfidic-minerally and balletic, but ultimately pretty easygoing in a dryish Kabinett sort of mold. This is mellifluous drinking as intended. Of prodigious versatility at the table. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Ned Goodwin MW - JamesSuckling.comThe 2023 Alea Riesling leads with roasted pineapple, green apples, hints of lychee and juniper, lemon oil and coriander. The fruit is a little quieter this year, but it's no less "present." It is a beautiful wine, fleshy and soft, but it still remains tethered to the tracks of very fine, very firm acidity. 12.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2023 - 2037.

Erin Larkin - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateI’m sure that Grosset’s Alea Riesling has always been a serious wine, but in the glass it’s more serious than ever, if that makes sense.
There’s excellent intensity here. There’s a slip of fruit sweetness but it’s gentle and slight, the clearer message one of crisp green apples, lime, minerals and tonic-like herbs. I get the feeling that Alea has changed tack slightly, become drier, more mineral, less grapey. I’m a fan. This is very good. Drink 2024 - 2032.

2023 Grosset Springvale RieslingClare Valley, South Australia, AUSTRALIA$54. 99Bottle$659.88 DozenABV: 12.9%Closure: StelvinSpringvale Riesling is crafted from Grosset's six-hectare estate-owned Certified Organic and Biodynamic vineyard at Watervale in the Clare Valley. A flavoursome release of this stalwart Clare riesling; easy access in youth with a sense of high drinkability, concentration of flavour and crystalline acidity. Scents of frangipani, sweet lime, ozone and green apple with similar flavours and a fine, chalky pucker to texture. There's a general prettiness, an inviting juiciness, despite the excellent, powdery textural elements and a freshness overall. It delivers a serious expression of the variety and feels like it is in the zone in youth, yet potential for very long cellaring in the same breath. Delicious, is the byword. Drink 2023 - 2040.

Mike Bennie - Halliday's Australian Wine CompanionReticent of aroma, yet the coil of acidity underpinning this wine is juicy rather than hard as I have often found it in the past. A workout in the glass reveals green apple, Asian pear, anise, spa salts and chalky pungency. The ripeness is on point. Properly mid-weighted, forceful of extract and dutifully long. This will age well across the mid-term, as its track record attests. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Ned Goodwin MW - JamesSuckling.comWell, seriously, the 2023 Grosset rieslings are wonderful.
This has you at hello. It’s structured and a touch reserved but there’s decent flavour both at the outset and throughout and then the finish, well, it saves its best for last. This wine really does seal the deal. Chalk, lime, fennel, a grainy/skinsy aspect to the finish but this is a wine of great fruit purity, finesse and finish. It’s delicious. It impresses with its structure. And it has that extra flourish. Drink 2024 - 2042.

The 2023 Springvale Riesling is exotic, fleshy and sumptuous in the mouth. Steely minerality flows alongside saffron, curry leaves, white pear, spring flowers and crushed rocks. 2023 Grosset Polish Hill RieslingClare Valley, South Australia, AUSTRALIA$79. 99Bottle$959.88 DozenABV: 12.9%Closure: StelvinPolish Hill Riesling is crafted from Grosset's eight-hectare estate-owned Certified Organic and Biodynamic vineyard in the Clare Valley. The gently sloping site, chosen and planted by Grosset in 1996, consists of silt and shallow shales over a thin crust of clay and gravel, resting on a bed of ancient blue slate, approximately 500 million years old. The challenging rocky soil leads to nutrient scarcity for the vines, resulting in small bunches and berries that contribute to the heightened intensity of the fruit.
Other Reviews....
An outstanding release of this vaunted wine. It's intense, it's racy, it's complex and nuanced in its fruit, spice, mineral and subtle savoury elements, all of it woven into an extremely persistent and poised textural experience. There's stacks of flavour in all this, yet held within a tensile thrust of raciness and faint chalky pucker. And long, very long. One for the ages here. Drink 2023 - 2040.

Mike Bennie - Halliday's Australian Wine CompanionSubdued aromas of talc, chalk, orchard fruits, tatami straw, finger lime and fresh lemonade. Ned Goodwin MW - JamesSuckling.comGrosset’s Polish Hill is renowned for its reserve, particularly on release, but this rendition has both its quality and its fruit intensity sitting front and centre. This really does announce itself. Flavours of lemon, lime, grapefruit, chalk and citrus blossom explode onto the palate in the most commanding and authoritative of ways, and then extend (mighty) lengthily through the finish. It’s a lay down misére. It’s scented, intense and sustained. It’s a wine of great beauty. Drink 2023 - 2042,

The cool, late vintage and reduced yield come together in a glorious riesling that is so delicious now it will be hard to give it the 10 or so years that will see it develop even more ravishing flavours and a lingering caress of silvery acidity. Drink to 2043.

The 2023 Polish Hill Riesling is utterly superb. It has the flesh and body that only the Clare can deliver; it is shaped by coiled acidity, and it ripples through the finish with unfettered fruit power. It's a glorious thing, this wine. The finish is dense and mineral, quite complex and long, although not as refined as the Pettenthal or Rothenberg wines. Tasted at the Vorpremiere VDP.Grosses Gewächs in Wiesbaden in August 2024. Stephan Reinhardt - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2023 Riesling Niersteiner Hipping Grosses Gewächs was made with whole berries in the ferment rather than prolonged pre-fermentation skin contact. It opens with stone dust, crushed lemon balm, a touch of flinty reduction and an enticing blend of red apple and juicy tangerine, even with a touch of creaminess. That creaminess is also immediate on the palate, pervaded by fine freshness. There’s real concentration and drive here, tingling with lemon brightness and savory red stone. Beautiful, serene and slender, it has lovely substance and a lasting, salty finish. (Bone-dry) Drink 2028-2060.

The 2023 Pettenthal Nierstein Riesling VDP.GG shows a bright, clear, finely spicy, mineral and complex nose of broken rock. Stephan Reinhardt - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2023 Riesling Niersteiner Pettenthal Grosses Gewächs offers creaminess, peppery lemon balm, ripe red apple crunchiness and intense iron-oxide and petrichor savor, all still wrapped in enticing reductive tones. The palate is smooth and streamlined, moving forward with grace, determination and emollience. Everything here is buffered, but at the core, bright citrus tanginess tingles, edged with mouthwatering saltiness. Beautifully coherent, seamless and flowing, this seems to sink deeper into its red stone nature, leaving a spicy, peppery aftertaste that’s as much informed by fine acidity as by veil-like phenolics. Stephan Reinhardt - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2023 Riesling Nackenheimer Rothenberg Grosses Gewächs still rings with the finest flinty reduction on the nose. The palate is buffered but shows a clear vein of agile fluidity and serene, sleek, dynamic movement. Leaving gorgeous traces of stony, irony, savory saltiness and unfolding with Seville orange and tangerine, it’s layered, beautiful, soothing, refreshing and long. Citrus zest lingers on the finish.
