Riesling
One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners. Browse our top rated Riesling wines here.

Boasting superb intensity and sublime power this is one out of the box for Riesling fans.
A brilliant water like core is framed by greenish tinged edges. Driving the nose are intense aromatics of lemon and lime with flashes of orange blossom, Granny Smith apple, wet steel and flinty mineral notes also chiming in. A combination of power and precision, mouth watering flavours of lime, lemon and tangy mandarin are thrust across the palate with exceptional force. Finishes dry with crisp, zingy acidity and a very long scrumptious aftertaste infused with wet steel and flinty mineral elements. An exceptional Riesling.

Intense and racy with laser like, mineral infused acidity driving a core of mouth watering lemon and lime fruit.
Brilliant very pale straw almost water like colour with a distinct greenish tinge running around the outskirts. Intense lime juice and lemon zest aromas are intermeshed with green apple, steely mineral and chalky talc notes. Showing terrific concentration are racy lemon and lime fruits which are underpinned by zippy acidity. Green apple, tangy mandarin, infusions of wet steel and flinty mineral characters chime in on the dry crunchy finish. Outstanding drive with a mouth-wateringly long aftertaste.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

Ever reliable, and one of my favourite Tasmanian rieslings. It has laser-like precision, its lime-infused fruit simply nodding to the 8.5g/l of titratable acidity. No frills winemaking other (perhaps) than the selection of a Mosel Valley isolate yeast. Drink by 2034.

All 18.5ha of vineyards are planted to Riesling, the excellent micro-climate and deep slate soils of the Brauneberger Juffer slope forming the basis for some of the most intensely flavoured and elegantly-structured Rieslings in Mosel. This wine comes from the blue slate soils of the steep slope sites of the villages of Brauneberg and Mulheim.
Brilliant water like colour with greenish tinged edges. Lifted lime and red apple aromatics are followed by hints of honeysuckle, pear and stony mineral notes. Terrific intensity of flavour with zippy lime and red apple fruits to the fore. Notions of honeysuckle, subtle tangy mandarin and flinty mineral elements ensue. Stuart Pigott - JamesSuckling.comThe 2020er Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese, as it is referred to on the consumer label and with a golden capsule, was made from partially botrytized grapes harvested at 110-115° Oechsle and was fermented down to noble-sweet levels of residual sugar. It proves still hugely reductive and only gradually reveals a highly aromatic and ripe nose of exotic fruits (mango, guava, passion fruit, and roasted pineapple), as well as toffee, minty herbs, William’s pear, and acacia. The wine proves juicy and fully fruity with quite some exotic presence on the subtly honeyed palate and leaves a sense of pure notes of mango, tangerine, and candied grapefruit wrapped into some zesty elements in the gorgeously playful finish. This noble-sweet wine now only needs some patience to integrate its elements and reveal its full potential. Drink 2030-2060.

Jean Fisch & David Rayer - Mosel Fine WinesA generous expression of peach and citrus fruit aromas is accompanied by a subtle herbal notion reflecting the action of natural yeast. Brilliant very pale straw colour with a distinctive ring of green around the outskirts and a watery hue. Lifted lime, mandarin and red apple aromas have a faint honeysuckle edge followed by notes of wet slate. Intensely flavoured and bursting with an energetic freshness, the palate serves up lime, zesty mandarin and red apple fruits over light honeysuckle, wet slate and flinty mineral characters. Slightly off dry finish with a long zingy aftertaste.

In 2019, Oliver Haag has succeeded again in producing an outstanding series of Rieslings, which includes the estate wine with concentration and length that is spectacular in this price range. After all, the grapes come exclusively from steep slopes, premier crus if you like, which are more in the side valleys, are inclined to the south and benefit from the cooling down wind like the Sonnenlay with its fine slate soil. The low yield in 2019 and the mostly old vines provide undreamt-of density and complexity here. It is a "Wine of the Year" for me and can hardly be surpassed in its price range.
The 2019 Riesling is pure, bright and crystal-clear on the precise, floral and finessed nose. Round and juicy on the palate, this is a very delicate and stimulating Riesling in the off-dry style. The wine has enormous grip, and you won't stop longing for it. Absolutely fabulous! Drink 2020-2032.

The 2019 Brauneberg Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Trocken GG is very fine, flinty, delicate and charming on the precise and beautifully articulated slatey and herbal nose that also displays highly refined and discreet tropical fruit aromas. However, the nose is remarkably shy at this early stage. On the palate, this is a lithe Juffer Sonnenuhr with great finesse and a pure, mineral, persistently salty and crunchy finish that doesn't show much fruit and power at this stage. This seems to be a rather ascetic yet piquant and salty Riesling, and I am curious how the wine will develop over the next six months. The finish is very long, intense and still dominated by yeasty notes. This will develop to a spectacular JSU with time.

2022 Georg Breuer Berg Schlossberg RieslingRheingau, GERMANY$280. 00Bottle$3360.00 DozenABV: 11.5%Closure: CorkGeorg Breuer estate was founded in 1880 as part of a wine merchant company, and has been owned by the Breuer family since the beginning of the 20th century. Georg Breuer enlarged the estate and increased the export of wines. His sons Bernhard and Heinrich and later Bernhard’s daughter Theresa expanded the vineyard size to 40 hectares in the best Rüdesheim, Rauenthal and Lorch sites. Theresa Breuer was thrust into the business after the sudden passing of her father in 2004, and through tireless work and dedication is now one of the most respected winemaking forces in Germany. The estate's focus is on top dry Riesling wines from the unique terroir of the Rheingau valley, and Breuer's flagship crus are Rüdesheim Berg Schlossberg and the 12.5-acre monopole, Rauenthal Nonnenberg.
Georg Breuer has vines on 3.5 hectares of the Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg. With a gradient of 70%, this is the steepest vineyard in the Rheingau. Its name derives from the Ehrenfels castle ruins above the Rhine Gorge. Heat-absorbing weathered slate with loess and loam give ideal ripening conditions for Riesling which thrives on the high mineral content of the soil. Farming is 100% organic (Georg Breuer is certified by Fair & Green). 100% healthy, ripe fruit, no maceration, whole cluster pressing, fermentation in old German wooden barrels (600-litre and 1,200 -litre), one racking after the fermentation and then a storage period on the fine lees for about seven months.

Full-bodied, round and very elegant on the palate, this is an intense, silky textured and persistently saline Berg Schlossberg with delicate bitters on the finely structured and still discreetly astringent finish. It has stunning complexity and refined acidity with grapefruit bitters on the mineral finish. This 2022 has excellent aging potential. 11.5% stated alcohol. Diam cork. Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Dec 30, 2023)According to Breuer, the 2022 Riesling Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg is the wine that shows most facets of the Rüdesheimer Berg. This is usually picked in fully south- and south-west-facing parcels, differing in altitude. In 2022, however, the core south-facing parcel was omitted, as the grapes were too stressed, so this is mostly of southwest-facing parcels. Hazelnut, apricot and cream speak tenderly on the nose. The palate is fresh and has much texture and concentration, yet the body is slender. Yeastiness combines with lemon pith on the palate and is countered by a gentle nuttiness. The picture is of compactness with a salty, lemony edge that makes the mouth water. Bright, unfrilly, clean-cut, resonant. (Bone-dry) Drink 2023-2035.

The 2020 Berg Schlossberg offers an intense and earthy bouquet with wet clayish slate and lemony as well as flinty aromas. Lush and elegant on the palate, this is a powerful, quite rich and mouth-filling Berg Schlossberg with grippy tannins, fine bitters and a long, intense and salty, very complex finish. More powerful than the 2021 and, in all its generosity and tension, a safe bet for the future. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in July 2022. Drink 2025 - 2050.

Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Aug 2022)The subtle exotic-fruit bouquet is already something special. However, the extremely precise and filigree palate is more exciting. This is a very refined dry riesling with a very long, salty finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Drinkable now, but best from 2023.

The vineyard site Pfaffenwies was initially mentioned as ‘pafenwies’ in documents from 1211, and later as ‘pfaffenwissen’ (1235). It was named after Pastor Dydo, also known as ‘Pfaffe’. This steep site has a gradient of up to 45% and is situated between 90 to 160m above sea level. The soil is a combination of stony Hunsrück slate and Taunus quartzite, with loess in the lower parts. Riesling from this area is characterised by great elegance as well as pronounced acidity and minerality.
Other Reviews....
The 2020 Pfaffenwies is sourced in the upper and lower plots of the cru, whereas in 2019, it was sourced just in the lower vineyards and the top section as well as the younger middle part went into the Terra Montosa. The bouquet is fascinating in its slatey/flinty purity and lemon-scented intensity with just a hint of oak. Vinified in oak like the Montosa, this is a full-bodied, pure, fresh and mineral Pfaffenwies with power, salt and grip and enormous length and complexity. Power and texture meet grip and salinity here, and although the 2020 is still a baby, it is highly promising. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in July 2022. Drink 2025 - 2045.

Nick Glaetzer began his winemaking journey with his family in the Barossa Valley, following with vintages in the Languedoc, the Pfalz, Margaret River, the Riverland, Sunraysia, the Hunter Valley and Burgundy. In 2005 Nick landed in Tasmania, searching for cool-climate, super-premium vineyards; perfect for crafting Pinot Noir, Riesling and savoury Shiraz.
While working in the Pfalz wine region of Germany, Nick was converted to the local method of selecting the harvest date of riesling grapes based on their acid content and structure ‒ rather than the traditional Australian manner of harvesting on sugar concentration and grape flavour. These grapes then ferment into riesling wines with delicate citrus flavours and aromas, compared to the tropical spectrum of a riper harvest.
The mid-palate structure of GDF riesling is invigorated by sur lie ageing, which involves keeping the finished wine on ferment lees for 6-18 months. -

Mike Bennie - James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion (August 2022)The Polish Hill Riesling is muscular and defined in its structure and is routinely possessed of an authority and grace straight off the bat. This 2022 Polish Hill Riesling is mineral and fine, but phenolic and taut, too. The acidity creates tension and life in the mouth, and despite the wine being pristine, it is chalky and pithy, too. The Polish Hill Riesling has a decorated legacy and is prized for its longevity in the cellar. There have been mutterings of similarities between 2022 and the great and fabled 2002 vintage, boding very well indeed for the future of this wine. Riesling mainlines the dirt and takes us to place. This is why we gravitate toward great wine, to be taken to dirt, vineyard and region. Drink 2022 - 2042.

Certified organic and biodynamic. A high-tension, fragrant Springvale release. Bright, floral perfume of lime blossom, ozone, blackcurrant and green apple. Mike Bennie - James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion (August 2022)Coiled. That's what this 2022 Springvale Riesling is. It's like a compressed spring, waiting for release. The fruit is from the Springvale vineyard and shows just how GOOD Australian Riesling is. This is textural and tight, with springboards of fruit blossom, chalk, pith and zest queued up. This is a wine that needs some time to emerge from itself, but it promises to be a superstar: Grosset has managed to wedge in some restraint and some austerity into the folds of the voluminous Clare fruit. Yikes. Awesome. Drink 2022 - 2042.

The 2022 Alea Riesling is made from fruit grown at the Grosset Rockwood vineyard. This is the off-dry Riesling in the lineup, and I can tell you now, the sugar, the phenolics and the acidity are in a textural mesh of harmony in the mouth. There is a cross-hatch component to the mouthfeel, and it suspends the fruit over the tongue and out over the long finish. Alea is the ‘off dry’ riesling from Grosset. This one feels dryer than any I have had before.
It’s a fleshy, fleshy feel though the core is pulverised rock and mineral water to counter balance. Pear, nectarine, some cucumber in tonic water to it too. Slurpy kind of feel with big appeal, good sense of freshness. It’s a little looser knit, broad in its roll around the palate, but has easy appeal.

Brilliant very pale straw in colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Jumping out of the glass are lime juice, citrus and orange rind scents laced with talc, wet steel and mineral notes. Exceptionally concentrated lime and lemon flavours fill the mouth backed by racy acidity. Lingering on the finish are orange rind, chalky talc and flinty mineral elements. Concludes dry and crisp with a very long precise aftertaste.
Drink now or cellar 6-8 years.
Alc. 12.8%Slightly deeper colour than the Polish Hill, although why it should be thus I don't know. The bouquet and palate march in tune, bringing Meyer lemon, lime and green apple into play from the outset. It's dangerously easy to drink. Drink by 2034.

James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion (September 2019)The differences between Springvale and Polish Hill riesling have become less pronounced over the years. I would argue.
This leans on the talc and the chalk before it hits the pedals of citrus and apple. It boasts both delicacy and intensity though at this early stage it’s still working out the finish; it’s long without having write-home length. There’s almost a suggestion of grapefruit here or at least of citrus rind; in any case it’s tucked neatly into the overall flow. Drink 2020 - 2028+

2019 Grosset Polish Hill RieslingClare Valley, South Australia, AUSTRALIA$89. 99Bottle$1079.88 DozenCellar: 6 - 8 Years (2025-2027)ABV: 12.5%Closure: StelvinCertified organic. Brilliant water like colour with a distinctive tinge of green around the outskirts. Piercing their way through the nostrils are intense lemon and lime aromatics followed by notions of green apple, subtle talc and steely mineral notes. Accessible, intensely flavoured and powerful yet still remarkably tightly coiled the palate features a core of pristine lemon and lime fruit that’s threaded by a tight line of acidity. Mouth watering crunchy green apple, orange rind, steely talc like characters and minerals chime in on the dry, austere finish. Magnificent drive on an exceptionally long aftertaste.
Cellar 6-8 years.

The sails of the ship are still tightly furled, but the length and balance will stand the wine well as it ages (for decades) elaborating on the flavours of the Polish Hill River district as it always does. Drink by 2035.

James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion (September 2019)Hand crafted, organically grown, single site/estate riesling from Grosset. 10% price increase on last year. There’s no wage stagnation at the top of the Australian wine industry. Heavy riesling bottle.
Super dry. Super minerally. Excellent intensity. Purity, absolutely. Hay, wheat, lime, flowery apples and talc, and of course that quartz-like quality. It’s tight through the finish, to the point where it doesn’t quite feel as long as it should; it will relax in time, and all will be sorted. Drink 2021 - 2030+

Campbell Mattinson - The Wine Front (September 2019)More intense than many young Polish Hill Rieslings, this 2019 retains great poise and shape within its rich frame. Floral notes abound – violets and lavender, lemon and lime blossom – and such a heady perfume points towards a similarly rich palate. Intense juicy lime is carried on a tight acid spine that also bears mineral notes of shale and schist. Complex yet crisp and very persistent. Drink 2021 - 2050.

Springvale ahoy!
Pretty perfume of frangipani, honeysuckle and lime with faint hints of blackcurrants. Juicy and approachable in the palate, slick with citrus oil characters, cool with lacy line of acidity, a touch of salted nuts, all well balanced, exceptional in length and persistence. Feels concentrated and quietly powerful. Smart release. Drink 2022 - 2045.

2018 Grunhaus Maximin RieslingMosel, GERMANY$27. 99Bottle$335.88 DozenCellar: 5 - 6 Years (2024-2025)ABV: 12%Closure: StelvinAs one of Germany's oldest wineries, the history of this iconic estate dates back to 966, when wines were mainly made for the nearby Monastery. Fast forward to today, fifth and sixth generation Carl von Schubert and his son Maximin are leading the estate carefully managing three of the most highly regarded Grand Cru vineyards in the region: Abtsberg, Bruderberg and Herrenberg.
Brilliant pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Aromas of red apples, pear, lime and hints of honeysuckle are followed by mandarin and spice. Texturally mouthfilling the palate is generously flavoured with ripe red apples, limes and honeysuckle over traces of orange and a flinty minerality. Finishes off dry with zippy acidity and a lengthy aftertaste.
