Riesling

One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners. Browse our top rated Riesling wines here.

The most concentrated of Loosen's 2016 GGs, but also the most closed. This has everything you expect from a Grand Cru quality dry Mosel riesling. After the creamy richness on the mid-palate comes a mighty wave of minerals at the bold finish. Better from 2018 and for many years after.

The 2016er Erdener Prälat GG is made from very old un-grafted vines, and was fermented with ambient yeasts and aged in oak for almost 12 months. This offers a gorgeous nose of pear, mango, grapefruit, passion fruit, brown sugar, apricot blossom, fine spices and flint stone from reduction. The wine is slightly bold on the palate and leaves a juicy and clean feel in the long and nicely firm and bold finish. The aftertaste is nicely long and elegant. 2021-2031.

Rather occluded nose for the moment. Sherbetty sweetness is the first thing to hit the palate. Still very tightly wound. Lacks the immediate appeal of the Treppchen. Wait? There is certainly density and persistence here.

Tasted in late July 2017 and slated for late September bottling, this leads with a pungent, site-typical meld of sassafras, horehound and kumquat. In keeping with the evolution of Loosen and Schug’s approach to Prälat over the past decade, it displays more than enough animation and primary juiciness to accompany its glycerol-richness and sense of stuffing. Suggestions of apple and mango exhibit a dichotomy of ripeness along with “green” pungency, but in the context of this wine’s piquant, zesty citricity and sense of herbal suffusion, I find the effect stimulating rather than inharmonious. The finish here grips aggressively but without overt bitterness and with persistent refreshment. This could conceivably be the last of its kind, as Loosen and Schug are considering discontinuing a “regular” Prälat Grosses Gewächs and instead shunting the entirety of dry wine labeled for that site into their “Reserve” program.

A fabulous GG to drink now, thanks to an exotic-fruit character that's totally ripe yet so delicate, the succulence not a jot too much. Great balance through the long, very polished finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Respekt certified. Drink or hold.

The lemon/lime-green colored 2018 Idig Riesling Trocken "GG" offers a deep and complex, still yeasty-scented and flinty nose. Lush and juicy on the palate but with a fine and silky texture, fine tannins and a very long finish, this is an outstandingly rich and powerful Riesling with perhaps some grams of sugar or a lower acidity but with the vitality of a remarkable wine that will surely and clearly improve in the bottle.

This is a remarkably mineral and taut style with dried citrus, quartz, ivory and brightly squeezed citrus. Edgy and compact on the palate with subtle, caressing phenolics and vibrant, bright acidity. Long and very citrusy on the finish. Drink now or hold.

The delicious paradox of this great dry riesling is the way it is built on an imposing scale, but is very pure and super straight without any hint of heaviness, even on the very long powerful finish. You'll need to be patient for at least a couple of years if you want to experience all the subtle nuances, but the ripe mirabelle note is already delightful. At least thirty years of ageing potential.

For once orchard fruit getsthe upper hand on meadow herbs in a Christmann Grosses Gewächs, but not in a heavy-handed but rather delightfully animating way. Fine mineral and herbal notions add interest and the merest hint of residual sugar serves only to increase the Idig’s power of seduction. I liked the 2014 for its subtlety, but think the 2016 deserves an extra half point for elegance.

The 2015 Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Riesling Auslese is the botrytis selection of the terraced Laychen plot that mainly sources the dry Riesling cru. From ungrafted 70-year-old vines, this Auslese opens stunningly clear, fresh and stony on the nose, with flinty flavors and remarkably fine and precise fruit aromas. This is a very well defined, finessed and mineral Auslese with some Saar features, although it is more lush and tender, of course. The finish is pure and stony, very fine and piquant, with lots of salt and stimulating finesse. A great and gorgeous Mosel Auslese!

The 2015 Dhroner Hofberg Riesling Spätlese comes from the warmer part of the cru and from 60+ year old vines that were picked botrytis-free in the end of October. The wine offers a super precise, fresh and intense bouquet of perfectly ripe Riesling berries intermixed with cool, crystalline-clear slate and flint aromas that give an exciting counterpoint. On the palate, this is a highly piquant and elegant, very finessed and lush Spätlese. It has a gorgeously elegant, balanced and stimulatingly salty finish. This is a picture-book Spätlese from the 2015 vintage and comes highly recommended.

Comes from Bream Creek's 44yo riesling vines, believed to be the oldest in Tasmania. It is already flaunting its wares with titratable acidity of 8.2g/l and residual sugar of 7.3g/l. It simply ratchets up the power of all in the inputs, and will give pleasure when very young or very old - and any point along the way. Drink by 2038.

Bream Creek has been around since the 1970s and the Reserve Old Vine Riesling is made from the first plantings in 1974.
Older vines should bring intensity and focus and that is exactly what is happening here. The green apple is a focused Bramley apple, lemon zest, sherbet, grapefruit curd, lemon blossom and fresh limes all are precise and intense. There is a hint of maturity in the kerosene and a silky richness to the vanilla notes but ultimately this is still so youthful with many years to come.  Quintessentially Tasmanian, this is a wine with a glorious sense of place and sense of self, delightful. Drink 2021-2031.

Clemens and Rita Busch are one of the pioneering organic, and now biodynamic, producers working in Germany. As the fifth generation winemaker at this estate, Clemens stopped using herbicides in 1976, then in 1984 he and wife Rita converted to organics. They were among the first in Germany to commit to organic viticulture and led the movement establishing an association of organic growers in 1986. The estate converted to biodynamics entirely in 2005, earning certifications from the EU and Respekt-Biodyn.

Based in Pünderich, almost all of the vines they work are on the slopes of the Marienburg, and unique for the Mosel, feature parcels planted on the three main colours of slate; blue, red, and grey. In the winery Clemens works with wild yeasts, and ferments mostly in very old 1000-litre barrels. Nothing is added to the wines at any stage, apart from a touch of sulphur at bottling. Most of the wines at the Busch estate are vinified dry, and they are rich, complex and often powerful. They age very beautifully, gaining in complexity and texture. However, the sweet and noble sweet wines from the estate are also impressive, ranking among the finest wines made anywhere on the Mosel.

Gigantically fresh, with a whole garden of fresh herbs, plus white peach and a touch of white currant. Great energy whipping it down the road on the sleek and focused palate. There must be quite some natural grape sweetness in here, but the acidity it so vibrant that you barely feel it. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drink or hold.

It’s not easy to prise apart the complex fragrance of the Marienburg Spätlese, suffice to say that herbal and mineral elements shape the first impression, with fine floral and fruity notes demanding a little more olfactory application. The taste of crunchy apple and zesty citrus fruit gets the juices flowing, sweet lemony acidity prolongs the sensory stimulation. More classic than avant-garde, traditionalists deserve to be pleased too.

Busch's 2019 Marienburg Spätlese Goldkapsel is clear and noble on the intense yet highly elegant and slightly flinty nose that displays perfectly selected Riesling fruit intertwined with floral notes. Tropical aromas on the light and filigreed yet intense and perfectly balanced palate, this gold capsule has a graceful structure and salty-piquant acidity. Notes of mango/pineapple juice fill every corner of this great, pure, refined and highly stimulating Spätlese. A fabulous Riesling and picture-book Spätlese that is impossible to spit! 7.5% alcohol. Tasted from AP 1320 in July 2020. Drink 2020 - 2060.

This masterpiece is just beginning to blossom! Great bouquet of spring meadows and floral honey, this is a rich, concentrated Spätlese with more than enough structure to carry the substantial weight, the lively acidity providing wonderful delicacy at the finish. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drink or hold.

The 2019er Marienburg Riesling Spätlese, as it is referred to on the main part of the consumer label and with a golden capsule, was made from fruit picked at 102° Oechsle from a selection of partially (10%) botrytized fruit and was fermented down to noble-sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers a superbly backward nose made of vineyard peach, cassis, elderflower, some almond cream, a hint of apricot, fine spices, and smoke. The wine proves superbly delineated and focused on the comparatively light-footed palate and leaves a light and dancing feel in the hugely precise and profound finish. The after-taste is subtly honeyed, packed with fresh fruits, herbal elements, and zest. This gorgeous wine cut along the lines of a light-footed expression of Auslese GK is truly superb! Drink 2029-2049.

The 2019 Marienburg GG Fahrlay is perfectly ripe and concentrated on the densely aromatic nose that intertwines ripe, intense and flinty fruit with fascinating notes of crushed stones and herbs, yet everything is already marvelously interwoven and balanced as well as pure, precise and crystalline, with lemon zest notes. Full-bodied, intense and crystalline on the palate, this is a rich, concentrated, perfectly ripe and aromatic Fahrlay with a long, intense, elegant, crystalline and persistently salty finish. This would be rich and bolder if there were no old vines in blue slate. This is an impressive wine that was bottled just a few days before I tasted it in September 2020. Drink 2025 - 2045.

The 2019er Marienburg Fahrlay GG, as it is referred to on the main part of the label, was fermented spontaneously in traditional oak casks with fruit harvested in a blue slate part of the Marienburg vineyard. It offers a superbly engaging nose made of cassis, grapefruit zest, citrusy fruits, ginger, elderflower, fine spices, herbs, and smoke. The wine proves gorgeously packed with racy flavors and smoke on the intensely flavored palate and leaves a superbly playful feel of whipped cream, earthy spices, and grapefruit zest in the long and subtly smoky finish. This is a stunning dry Riesling in the making! Drink 2024-2034.

A near perfect vintage along with Murrumbateman’s well suited terroir has produced a stunning Clonakilla Riesling.
Brilliant water like core with greenish tinged edges. Aromas of lime, orange zest and lemon mix with chalky talc like notes and a subtle steeliness. Showing great precision the palate is bursting with intense lime and lemon flavours which are underpinned by searing acidity. Green apple, delicate orange rind, wet steel and flinty mineral characters present themselves on the back half. Outstanding power finishing dry with a long sharply focused aftertaste. Superb.

One of Australia’s finest rieslings; a benchmark riesling for me.
Loads of floral perfume, preserved lemon, pretty talc scents, a bit of warm river pebble, lime juice. Delicate in the palate, more lime juice here, tart and with great energy, crispness, cool herbal notes, some chalky pucker and endless mouth-watering length. Tightly wound but slightly juicy, if you get the drift. Beautiful expression, high toned saline mineral acidity, refreshing now to the max, will last a generation. Drink 2021-2040+

A seriously good, young dry riesling with a striking mineral edge to the nose of fresh lime juice, wet stones and gentle herbal notes. The palate has real intensity and depth with a vivid citrus and white-peach fruit drive. Snaps dry and the flavors hold pure and long. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Tasted 10/11/2014: From a 44yo dry-grown vineyard, hand-picked, chilled overnight, then whole bunch pressed. Apple and lemon blossom fragrance sets the scene for a particularly elegant and focused palate; while still in a primary phase, and very delicate, it has utterly perfect line, length and balance. It’s great to see some for the second generation influence in a few of the Great Riesling Houses of Australia coming through, with Frankland Estate eking out Alter Weg and now Crawford River releasing this thoughtfully produced new release that likewise uses barrel fermentation and lees to enhance high quality riesling fruit. La Violetta is first gen, but Andrew Hoadley’s Das Sakrileg comes to mind here too. This wine saw its natural ferment out in barrel and then hung out there for two more years. To paraphrase, this is an intent to “constantly strive for high quality wines while extending some winemaking boundaries”. Indeed.
It’s kindred to Crawford River’s riesling staples in intensity, concentration and presence in the glass, but this is a whole new thing. A wild expression with quality writ large, but this isn’t for purists, let’s say, unless oxidative, nutty-savoury wines of Jura or lo-fi Burgundy comes to mind readily, as it shares kindred space with wines of that ilk, in some ways. While not wholly in an eccentric camp it’s just strikingly different to Crawford River’s detail and purity with riesling; there’s salted cashew, sourdough yeasty notes, toffee apple characters and of course the citrus, floral and apple that fills the DNA of the vineyard’s staple characters. Acidity is saline, coursing with energy and incredibly refreshing in this wine. Texture is taut, slightly gummy like wet chalk and excellent. Flavours are bold, as is the perfume. It’s lavish, it’s so very complex, so very interesting, so very good. Give it time in a decanter, don’t drink too cold. Drink 2021 - 2030.

Crawford River riesling needs little introduction. The 2020 harvest in Henty seems to be very good by most reports, though I’ve heard of yields being down and some climate pressure with frost and the like, early. Crawford River’s vineyards are in their own universe so probably all good there.
Brilliant riesling. Texture, weight, drive, energy – top marks for all. Scents of green apple juice, frangipani, ozone, fennel and lime. Flavours are similar with beautiful concentration, glossy texture, flecks of talc-powdery minerality, and an extremely long, cool, herbal, juicy-lime finish making this moreish and righteous. Impeccable balance, a sense of grace and comely flow. A wine to sip and savour; relish the little details. Magic stuff. Drink 2021 - 2040.

Hard to believe this complex, astounding riesling is so, so, very young. It comes fully formed, in balance, bursting with freshness, purity of varietal expression and beautiful fruit. And, yes, by usual standards it is riper, with stone fruits joining lemon drop, grapefruit and baked apple. But it brings added complexity and texture, which joins with a tingly acidity to produce something memorable. Drink by 2030.

Very Intense Release. So much perfume, so much velocity and fruit power to taste. Citrus oil, apple juice concentrate, faintest honeyed character, a sluice of saline minerality. Powerful, amazing white wine here. A combination of crushed and whole-bunch fruit, neutral yeast, fermentation in stainless steel, 3 months on lees prior to racking and blending. Not fined. So youthful, so fresh in a squeezed juice kind of way. Lemon jelly crystals, lemon drop, grapefruit pith, orange peel, lime blossom, in scent and on the palate. Nice texture in building phase. But, as usual, the co-star with equal billing in this production is the crunchy, tangy acidity. Drink by 2031.

Mouth watering lime zest, lemon and orange rind fruits show both volume and concentration across the palate. Lush and creamy on the palate, this is a generous and dense, lush and persistent Brücke Spätlese with remarkable freshness and piquancy. It's pretty straight and piquant, with remarkable finesse and mineral tension. Tasted in July 2019.

White peach, quince and red raspberry give an impression on the nose and the creamy, polished palate of both jellied and fresh fruits. An influx of lime serves for welcome, animating brightness, and the penetratingly sustained, mouthwateringly salt-tinged finish is transparent to wet stone, setting up a shimmering fruit–mineral exchange.

Very sensual! Full-bodied, rich and round, this is a highly elegant, intense and dense Riesling with a persistent finish. Very aromatic and sensual, but it needs some time to gain even more finesse.

The 2014 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese (AP #20) offers a nice flinty flavor intermixed with ripe Riesling aromas. Racy and piquant on the palate, but also rich and very juicy, with the sweetness well masked by the piquant and racy nature. I find this Spätlese pretty young and would cellar it for at least seven or more years. Drink 2023 - 2030.

Brown spices, vanilla and lime zest accent the tangy fresh apple fruit of this buoyant yet mouth-filling and subtly creamy bottling. Significant residual CO2 adds to the stimulation of a juicy, judiciously sweet finish. I find the delicacy and clarity of the corresponding Kabinett marginally more appealing today, though this Spätlese should become more interesting with time and hold its allure longer. Drink 2016 - 2024.

Touches of exotic spice and crushed minerals lend complexity to sun-kissed peach and melon flavors in this medium-sweet Riesling. It's punchy and spry, full of high-toned acidity and lift, but finishes long, lean and elegant. It's youthful and exuberant now, but should continue to meld beautifully through at least 2027.

Extremely deep and concentrated, but no less finely delineated, this is so complex you could spend hours studying all the spicy details. However, the ripe-mango note that dominates the foreground is also ravishing. The best wine of this category (long matured GGs) made so far in Germany! Drink or hold.

In reviewing the “regular” vintage 2015 Erdener Prälat Reserve, I looked forward comparing the eventual Reserve bottling, and expressed “my hunch ... that the latter will prove not just more expressive in its early years but also longer-lived.” Well, that time is here, and at least in terms of expressiveness, this tasting unfortunately failed to confirm my hunch. This Reserve appears less successful than the “regular” Grosses Gewächs in reflecting Loosen and Schug’s determination (beginning with 2004) to capture an animation and dynamic exchange of flavors in all of their Prälat bottlings that were missing when the site was getting picked later and based more on achieving high must weight. The nose here shows an oxidative tendency that I haven’t noted in other Loosen Reserve bottlings, though in itself, I don’t consider that a problem. Prickly notes of lemon and kumquat zests, along with an incisive note of white pepper, are very much in keeping with how the “regular” Grosses Gewächs performed in its youth. But smoky black tea and Latakia tobacco, along with suggesions of wet stone, moss and lichen, take the nose here to a new level of complexity. So far, so good – very good, in fact. Furthermore, the midpalate comes off as slightly slimmer as well as more texturally refined than that of the regular bottling, which might in part be a function of alcohol having been blown off by an additional year in cask, but also and in large part of lees buffering. It’s the finish of this Reserve – though impressive in its sheer persistence – that I find a letdown. A slightly dank alkaline and mossy impression seems to be all that remains of those elements that the nose led one to anticipate, and there is a sense of opacity, with only modest primary juiciness. “This is just Prälat being Prälat,” insisted Loosen, “and it needs time to come back.” As for longevity, that must obviously also remain an open question. There is some of the same delightfully invigorating impression of fresh, seedy red berries as in the as-yet unbottled “regular” 2018 Grosses Gewächs, a further demonstration that extended time in cask (this spent two years there) need by no means sap Loosen Grosse Gewächse of primary juiciness, animation or invigoration. In fact, the energy that this bottling projects is quite tightly wound. Alkaline, saline and kelp-like notes serve for intrigue and saliva-inducement on a tongue-tingling finish. The mineral and marine elements here are perceived more as a suffusion, and there is, for now at least, not the sense of transparency projected by the corresponding Wehlener Sonnenuhr. The polished, subtly creamy palate features animatingly youthful, juicy apple and lime, and the lingering finish is admirably transparent to myriad nuances of a mineral, mossy and lichen-like sort. This wine’s combination of sensual allure with head-scratching intrigue delectably substantiates Loosen’s notion that his Grosses Gewächs could be improved upon by delaying the bottling of selected fuders for a second year or longer. And my intuition, like his, is that this approach should also conduce to longer bottle life, a contention that recent re-tasting of the vintage 2012 Reserves seems to support. Drink 2020 - 2030.

Absolutely fabulous! Silky textured, lush and generous yet highly finessed, this is an intense yet subtle, pure and minerally fresh Riesling from one of the Mosel's finest vineyard. The finish is long, fresh, piquant and sustainably structured as well as salty. Irresistible. Drink 2024 - 2050.

On the palate the fruit of peach and pear takes the initiative, but is well balanced by cool mint and fine nuances of spice with aniseed the most prominent.

The wine develops a great nose of mirabelle, tangerine, brown sugar, mint, flowers, whipped cream, and fine spices. The wine proves rather firm and structured on the palate and leaves a fully spicy feel in the long finish. This is nicely made in a fruity and elegantly light style. Drink 2021-2031.

Apple and white peach are strongly marked by the piquancy of their seeds and pits but fortunately preserve a modicum of primary juiciness. There is a greater sense of stuffing and fullness here than in other Loosen 2016 Grosse Gewächse, but less animation or sense of detail. The bitter side of vanilla bean points toward the Einzellage of origin, and there is a prominent undertone of wet stone in the seriously sustained finish. But, apropos of “serious,” don’t look to this wine for charm! Like past installments, the 2016 issues principally from vines planted in 1911 in an unconstructed portion of the Sonnenuhr Einzellage known as Laychen.” Loosen maintains that a focal-point location, combined with the abundance of finely morcellated slate from which it gets its name, makes Laychen the site in the Wehlener Sonnenuhr with the finest potential, which he finds already reflected in the present wine. I can’t identify here the surplus of “finesse” or “elegance” – vis-à-vis, say, the corresponding Treppchen, Würzgarten or Himmelreich – that Loosen as well as some of my fellow critics typically perceive in his Grosse Gewächse from Wehlener Sonnenuhr. I tasted this one late in July 2017, approximately two months ahead of its anticipated bottling date.

Honeysuckle adds alluring inner-mouth perfume, and a glossy, subtly creamy texture serves as the perfect foil for the wine’s bracing brightness and infectious juiciness. Where the corresponding Sonnenuhr conveyed an extremely subtle impression of botrytis, here I can scarcely find any such impression – not that I’m complaining! The vibrant finish delivers tingling brightness of citrus, an invigorating crunch of strawberry seeds, wafting florality and a faint slick of quince jelly to accompany its irrepressible fresh fruitiness. The wine develops a smooth and creamy feel on the palate and leaves a delicately powerful feel of herbs and spices in the long and superbly intense finish. But it’s lovely nonetheless. Orange and muskmelon are mingled with decadent lily, headily sweet gardenia and musky peony both on the nose and on an expansive, glycerol-rich palate loaded with inner-mouth perfume. That perfume, like the wine’s ripe fruit flavors, lingers impressively, if without much animation. (This was bottled shortly after my late July 2017 visit.)

Pronounced lime, citrus and orange rind scents dominate the nose with some chalky mineral and light talc notes also evident. Mouth watering lime and citrus fruits show excellent concentration with orange rind, talc and flinty mineral characters ensuing. Fullish in its feel, it finishes dry with crisp acidity and a long tangy aftertaste.

A contrasting mood to Eden Hall's Springton, the intensity and tension of the season is encapsulated here. Spicy, wild lemon, lime and Granny Smith apple fill an expansive and generous style, holding a finish of considerable drive, persistence and promise. It holds both the richness and breadth for immediate appeal and the cool, focused acid energy to go long. Drink by 2030.

Tropical fruit aromas on the juicy, elegant, refined and seamless palate lead to a salty-piquant, mouth-watering and stimulating finish with great finesse and precision. This is Scharzhofberger at its very best and a Spätlese close to perfection! Tasted in April 2020.

And this aromatic complexity carries effortlessly the very succulent yet finely etched palate through the lingering, smoky finish.

It offers a gorgeous and superbly subtle nose made of elderflower, grapefruit zest, apricot, almond cream, and subtly floral elements. The balance of the wine on the palate is simply stunning. Delicately creamy and incredibly subtle honeyed flavors of fruits are lifted up by some beautifully ripe acidity. The wine leaves a gorgeously airy, yet intense and persistent feel of almond cream in the long and gorgeously subtle sense of smoky slate, floral elements, ripe fruits, and fine spices. This gorgeous sweet wine has the delicate exotic presence of an Auslese GK at other Estates, but the finesse and subtlety are firmly that of a Spätlese. What an amazing success!

Lush yet precise and enormously piquant and salty on the palate, it displays crisp white stone fruit aromas and the crystalline mineral nerviness of the iron-rich gray slate soils that eat up the residual sugar easily so that the taste is just electrifying and salty yet not really sweet. This is a frisky, mouthwateringly salty and piquant Riesling of remarkable precision, finesse and elegance, with picture-book tension for Kabinett. The finish is highly stimulating and incomparable. I dare to say that this Kabinett is my favorite this year due to its precision and coolish, precise nature. Tasted from AP 3-20 in April and June 2020.

This bright-white colored wine offers a rather subtle and, at the beginning, even shy nose driven by reduction. After a little airing, absolutely textbook flavors of white peach, white flowers, and slate emerge from the glass. These classic flavors for a Scharzhofberger carry over onto the palate, where they are joined by some zesty acidity and a gorgeous touch of whipped cream. Everything is simply in balance and this sense of completeness also drives the gorgeous finish and after-taste. This hugely impressive Kabinett is without doubt one of the finest at this Estate over the last few years!

This is like a spring mountain river full of Riesling rolling over crushed slate. It is highly delicate but lush and sexy, with great precision, crystalline acidity and lingering salinity, finishing with just the right amount of residual sugar. Impressively long and tensioned on the pure and stimulating finish, this is just gorgeous and possibly the most fascinating Scharzhof I have tasted in 20 years. The times of calling this is a Best Buy are long gone, but if you ant to taste the DRC of Riesling, you should definitely try it. Tasted in April 2020.

Medium-dry, succulent and vibrant with a very long, clean, minty finish.

This bright white-colored wine offers a gorgeous nose made of white peach, apricot blossom, a hint of cream, smoke, slate, and still quite some residual scents from its spontaneous fermentation. The wine proves gorgeously intense and even almost powerful on the palate at first, but then develops great finesse in the long and subtle finish. Some minty herbs join the gorgeous flavors of white peach, chalky minerals, and a hint of whipped cream in the delicately airy and off-dry tasting after-taste. This wine proves a huge success but one which will benefit from a few years of bottle aging to develop its full aromatic finesse.

Superb, energetic, taut and very complex white wine. Scents of ozone and green apple, fennel and talc. Beautiful perfume that reflects perfectly into flavours in the palate, a shimmering, glassy and tense feel drawn long and to a powdery, lightly puckering and, again, talc-like lingering finish. Epic.

The palate has a similarly complete and composed style, leading you along with pristine lime, apple, white-peach and fresh-pear flavors. Long and effortless, this is all so pleasurable. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

I most often prefer the dry Rieslings from Frankland Estate, so perhaps bear that in mind. Drink 2020 - 2026.

Off-dry and crafted from a plot-by-plot-by-row selection across the most propitious sites. Lemon squash, candied citrus zest, mountain herb and tonic. This serves as a transparent stream of uncluttered riesling scents, neither too dry and sour; nor excessively fruity and dainty. Make no mistake, despite its ethereal flow, this mid-weighted riesling packs punch across a long finish of sap and crunch, the dollop of sugar mitigating the grape's soprano acidity.

German settlers brought the variety to the Barossa Valley in South Australia in the 1850's where the grape flourished. It's since found many new homes, such as Mt. Barker in Western Australia, the Clare Valley in South Australia, as well as Central and Southern Victoria. A tightrope of fruit and racy acidity when young, age-worthy examples develop honey and toast characteristics, sometimes accompanied by a distinct 'kerosene' note. Generally suited to cooler climates, examples from Grosset, Petaluma, Wilson Polish Hill, Dukes, Western Australia and Best's Great Western, Victoria are all worth seeking out.
