There is just enough reduction present to blur the nuances of the fresh and cool aromas of citrus peel and various floral elements. There is good if not special concentration to the wonderfully sleek medium-bodied flavors that exude evident minerality on the balanced, dry and stylish finale that is firm enough to repay up to a decade of keeping. The Weber family of Hofgut Falkenstein have been making ultra-traditional Rieslings in the Saar district of the Mosel region since the mid-eighties; there they farm about 9 hectares in and around the villages of Niedermennig and Krettnach. Erich, the family winzer (winegrower in german) works alongside his middle son Johannes, who has joined him full-time in the vineyards and cellar in recent years. Ever since there has been more of a focus on Rieslings with residual sugar. The emphasis on their work is in the vineyard, where no pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers are employed and cover crops are grown to encourage biodiversity and, when necessary, competition with the vines for water. With their straightforward approach to winemaking the Webers craft light, distinctive and racy Rieslings displaying well-integrated acidity from their low yielding old vines, and are bottled traditionally by the cask.

The 2022er Niedermenniger Herrenberg Riesling Spätlese Feinherb Palm (the reference to this internal cask name is provided in small print on the label after the AP number) comes from different small parcels on the western side of the vineyard and was fermented down to off-dry levels of residual sugar. Slightly reductive at first, this quickly opens up to reveal beautiful notes of vineyard peach, Conference pear, minty herbs, and stone fruits. The wine proves incredibly creamy and refined on the delicately smooth and beautifully refined palate. The finish is more focused as zesty elements come through. Aromatic and fruity flavors are wrapped into fine spices and herbal elements in the after-taste. Drink 2027-2042.

The 2022er Krettnacher Euchariusberg Riesling Auslese Förster (the reference to this internal cask name is provided in small print on the label after the AP number) was made from clean fruit harvested rather late at 90° Oechsle from vines planted in the 1960s in the prime Gross Schock sector of the vineyard and was fermented down to sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers a fresh and delicately floral nose of bright white and yellow fruits, candied grapefruit, may tree, cassis, and smoke. This ancient process was made new again and brought back into vogue in the late 90s by Josko Gravner (and others) who began searching for ways to make wines of the region more individual. Many of the local varieties such as Ribolla Gialla respond extremely well to extended skin contact, unleashing layers of texture and phenolic richness, along with their signature amber/orange colour.
Il Carpino sits on Friuli Venezia-Giulia’s winemaking ‘Golden Strip’ alongside their closest neighbours, Gravner and Radikon. Today they farm 40 acres of vineyards planted on calcareous sandstone-rich soil famous in the region for fine wine production. Il Carpino are located at a higher altitude than most in the region, and their wines embody the energy and fragrance this positioning grants them. Their flagship wine is their Ribolla Gialla which spends 60 days on skins before being racked off into large Slavonian botti for 2 years, with an additional 2 years in bottle before it hits the market.
Bright straw colour with amber tinged edges and a watery hue. Lifted spicy ripe pear, dried apple and honeycomb like notes are trailed by notions of quince and almond. Texturally full the palate features a mix of ripe pear, blood orange and honeycomb flavours which overlay a spicy almond back drop. Stephan Reinhardt - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2023 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese offers a yeasty aroma with a hint of flint and a slight touch of mint. The palate showcases pure Mirabelle and gentle sweetness, with exquisite delineation and a supple sweetness highlighted by an exquisitely pure lemon tone. Drink 2026-2060.

Anne Krebiehl MW - VinousThis great Spatlese from the Graacher Himmelreich has everything we hope for from this famous site: excellent concentration and delicacy on the barely medium-bodied palate, terrific slatey character and a broad spectrum of aromas that range from white flowers and peaches to blackcurrants. Super-stony and precise finish. All of this has a wonderful spring-like freshness that makes it irresistible. Drink or hold.

The 2023 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese is concentrated and very intense on the fruit-driven, deep and spicy nose. Stephan Reinhardt - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2023 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese opens with a serene, stony, salty slaty breeze. The palate is exquisitely fine and very bright, luminous even, soaring upward as it reaches down into the slate, embodying the total elegance of the site. Slenderness and serenity are exemplary. Drink 2028-2060.

Anne Krebiehl MW - VinousThe sensuous curves of Art Nouveau design and joyful flourishes of rococo both give an idea of what Mosel riesling elegance means, but in a masterpiece like this it takes on a totally distinctive feeling unlike anything else on Planet Wine. The white peach fruit, white flower aromas and slatey minerality all tingle on your palate, then flicker on and on in a totally fascinating manner in the nearly endless finish. The touch of sweetness is already beautifully integrated, although the wine just began a decades-long life. Drink or hold.

The 2023 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese is clear, deep, intense and fresh on the complex and still reductive nose. Rich and lush on the concentrated palate, this is a dense and savory, textured and rich Auslese with saline grip and good tension, but it's currently pretty closed and not really singing, even with a certain astringency (from a second bottle). 8% stated alcohol. Stephan Reinhardt - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThis fabulous Auslese lays out a whole basket of exotic fruit before you. The almost supernatural freshness is no less exciting. Terrific tension between the two, the acidity giving this great brilliance on the extremely precise, medium-bodied palate. The finish almost perfectly balances the restrained richness and intense wet-stone minerality. Limited production. Still very youthful, but how can you resist the beauty? Drink or hold.

Stephan Reinhardt - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2023 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Auslese, made virtually without botrytis from fully ripe grapes, offers a shy tone of stone and yeast. The palate features Mirabelle jelly with lovely overtones of lemon balm and fern, wonderfully cut by freshness with a pithy, zesty edge of lime and mainly pale lemon. The finish resembles lemon and yellow plum sorbet, exquisitely fresh and palate-cleansing, yet with exquisite sweetness. Incredibly fine, slender and so balanced. Drink 2028-2060.

Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comThe 2022er Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese LGK was made from shriveled rather than botrytized fruit and was fermented down to noble sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers a gorgeously refined and sumptuous nose of almond paste, pineapple, honeyed yellow peach, tangerine, candied orange zest, fresh apricot, passion fruit, thyme, and smoke. The wine proves magnificently playful on the rich yet refined palate. There is great sweetness and intensity, but also airy and elegant elements which come into play. Jean Fisch and David Rayer - Mosel Fine WinesThe 2022 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese Lange Goldkapsel was designated thus because it was not found typical enough for a Beerenauslese, despite reaching sufficient must weight, it was made with 55-60% of botrytis. Mirabelle jelly and compote shine on the nose, slightly lifted, aromatic, ripe and sweet. The palate brings this to the fore, presenting a lovely, concentrated, vividly fruity, bright core of candied Mirabelle, accompanied by gilded, candied citrus, mouth-watering and tempered, yet so intense. Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Oct 2020)Heady and head-spinningly diverse floral perfume, nut pastes and pit fruit preserves inform the nose and the luscious, glossy, creamy, delicate palate of this beauty. Nougat and quince jelly are the strongest midpalate impressions. Lime zest and fruit pit serve for welcome, enlivening counterpoint on a finish whose vibrancy and exuberance are amazing, especially from a wine of such sheer overall richness and ripeness as well as such creaminess of texture. Sweetness is prominent, but by no means excessive. The Prüms insisted that this wine issued from virtually botrytis-free albeit desiccated fruit.

Joseph Colin initially trained at Domaine Marc Colin, working alongside his brother, Pierre-Yves, to make the family wines. In 2016, Joseph decided to create his own Domaine, and, subsequently, inherited just over six hectares of vineyards from his family holdings, representing about nineteen different appellations, to start his exciting new venture. Keeping yields low, Joseph picks on the early side to retain an unmistakable purity and freshness in his wines. He likes the tension and vibrancy in his whites, and feels it is a signature of his output. Purity is a word that Joseph particularly associates with his wines, since he doesn't like heavy handed or reductive and oaky wines, but rather he allows the different terroirs to shine through truly in the glass. The wines display a tense and vibrant profile, championing minerality and finesse yet there is a comforting richness in the mid-palate.
OSA is an ancient name for Saint-Aubin, and is a blend of four premier cru plots that were all too small to be bottled separately; Sentier du Clou, Combes, Roches Dumay, and En Vermarain.
Other Reviews....
A markedly restrained if pretty nose grudgingly offers up its array of citrus, floral and mineral reduction notes. The racy and very sleek medium-bodied flavors exude a bracing salinity on the firm, compact and linear finish. This is notably austere and a bit lean though my sense is that this will flesh out with bottle age. With that said, I would advise buying this only if you have the intent to cellar it. Drink through 2028+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundA blend of Sentier du Clou, Combes, Roches Dumay, En Vermarain, which were all too small to be made separately, the most coming from Sous Roche Dumay. This will be named something along the lines of Cuvée de l’Oratoire, but the decision had not been taken at the time I tasted. Pale lemon colour, while the nose is quite discreet, quite lean on the tenser end of the spectrum, with various different citrus fruits including a bit of orange rind. Medium plus length.
