Egon Müller exists at a rare level of fame and respect in the world of wine, widely considered one of the finest producers who is at the pinnacle of quality. Where the likes of Domaine de la Romanee Conti sit at this level in Burgundy, so too Egon Müller in Germany. This is reflected not only with their unrivalled track record of excellence, but also with the prices paid for rare Egon Müller bottles at auction, including some of the most expensive white wines ever sold. Egon Müller is also the sole German member of the Primum Familiae Vini (First Families of Wine) whose other members include owners of Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Chateau Haut Brion, Vega Sicilia, Pol Roger, Antinori and Tenuta San Guido (Sassicaia).

The 2021er Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett is a barely fruity-styled wine with a bright white-yellow color and a stunningly pure nose of white peach, citrusy fruits, white flowers, smoke, and a subtle dash of whipped cream. The wine proves stunningly vibrant on the almost off-dry tasting palate and leaves great notes of fresh herbs and spices in the long finish. The aftertaste is to die for as it proves airy, elegant, precise, and incredibly persistent. What a great success! The only downside is that one will need to be a bit patient and give the wine a few years in the bottle in order to allow it to integrate the touch of tartness currently floating around. Drink 2029-2041.

Wonderful honeysuckle and jasmine aromas pour from the glass of this very racy and crystalline Kabinett. As sharp and bright as a samurai sword, each swirl of the glass reveals new aromas, sushi ginger and dill only being the most obvious. Drink or hold.

The 2021er Scharzhofberger Riesling Spätlese is a sweet wine with an absolutely stunning nose made of cassis, a hint of pineapple, ginger, whipped cream, minty herbs, and smoky elements. The wine proves incredibly finely balanced on the palate, where pear sorbet joins the party and adds to the zingy yet nicely focused in the finish. What makes this wine so special is the incredible purity and finesse that comes out of the glass. The finish seems endless, intense, and yet so incredibly airy and subtle despite a not shy presence of (juicy) acidity. Spätlese does not get better than this. Drink 2036-2061.

The floral aromas are like walking into a top florist’s store. Also Asian pear, Yamanashi white peach and fresh pineapple aromas. Stunning concentration and brilliance on the super-focused palate, enormous mineral energy and freshness driving the breathtaking succulent finish. Doesn’t want to stop. Drink or hold.

The 2021er Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese is a sweet wine made from botrytized fruit. It proves still rather reduced and needs a few minutes in the glass to reveal a stunningly clean nose of fresh orchard fruits, a hint of pineapple, and glorious notes of minty herbs and spices. The wine is still a touch firm on the zingy and incredibly playful palate and leaves a stunning note of fresh fruits and proves full of finesse. The combination of intensity, precision, and utter zesty-fruity balance is simply to die for. This is clearly a modern-day classic in the making. Drink 2036-2061.

This smells like the most beautiful white peach you can imagine; the kind of fruit that’s almost impossible to buy. Very pure and vibrant in spite of the lush fruit, the racy acidity giving this a stunning crystalline clarity and tremendous length. Made from 100% botrytized fruit. Limited production. The 2021er Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Spätlese is a sweet wine with a beautiful nose made of orchard fruits, cassis, floral elements, bergamot, chalk, and smoke. The wine is beautifully filigreed and elegant on the palate. A subtle touch of whipped cream adds some depth and silkiness to the overall focused and zesty experience. The finish is really to die for as it is both creamy and hugely zest, as one would expect from a high end Spätlese. Drink 2031-2061.

The 2021er Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Auslese is a sweet wine made from botrytized fruit. It offers a superb even if still slightly reduced nose made of bergamot-infused herbs, pineapple, ginger, starfruit, white peach, pear, and a hint of apricot blossom. The wine proves beautifully filigreed yet packed with fruity-driven flavors on the palate. It leaves a pure and ethereal feel in the absolutely stunning finish. The 2019 Scharzhofberger Spätlese is brilliant, digitally precise and spicy on the clear, elegant, deep and terroir-typical nose with mango and papaya aromas. Tropical fruit aromas on the juicy, elegant, refined and seamless palate lead to a salty-piquant, mouth-watering and stimulating finish with great finesse and precision. This is Scharzhofberger at its very best and a Spätlese close to perfection! Tasted in April 2020.

Yes, this is a medium-sweet riesling, but the breathtaking spectrum of fruit aromas, from white peach through to mangosteen, renders this almost irrelevant. And this aromatic complexity carries effortlessly the very succulent yet finely etched palate through the lingering, smoky finish.

The 2019er Scharzhofberger Riesling Spätlese AP 06 was fermented down to sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers a gorgeous and superbly subtle nose made of elderflower, grapefruit zest, apricot, almond cream, and subtly floral elements. The balance of the wine on the palate is simply stunning. Delicately creamy and incredibly subtle honeyed flavors of fruits are lifted up by some beautifully ripe acidity. The wine leaves a gorgeously airy, yet intense and persistent feel of almond cream in the long and gorgeously subtle sense of smoky slate, floral elements, ripe fruits, and fine spices. This gorgeous sweet wine has the delicate exotic presence of an Auslese GK at other Estates, but the finesse and subtlety are firmly that of a Spätlese. What an amazing success!

2023 Envinate Parcela Palo Blanco Las Molinas
    Tenerife, SPAIN

    $1980.00 Dozen

Migan and Palo Blanco are both very old vine wines from the Valle de la Orotava zone, although they don’t bear the D.O. stamp. The old vines are trained in the Trezendo fashion: braiding new shoots over older ones until the vines begin to resemble old dreadlocks weaving over the landscape. The terrain is flatter than Táganan, more conducive to farming. 2023 Las Molinas is the second vintage of this single parcel wine from a centenarian plot of ungrafted, pre-phylloxera vines that had formerly been included in the Palo Blanco bottling. Fermented and aged in a single neutral oak foudre of 2500 liters.

    Other Reviews....
The second vintage of the 2023 Palo Blanco Las Molinas is quite similar to the regular Palo Blanco from the same year: saline, sharp and with great purity, precision and cleanliness. This matured in a Garbelotto 2,500-liter oak foudre. It has a moderate 11.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.01 and 7.48 grams of acidity. It's vibrant, full of energy and electricity, with effervescent freshness and volcanic minerality. This is very young but has the elements and the balance to age neatly in bottle. 2,500 bottles were filled in July 2024. Drink 2025-2035.

    Other Reviews....
The 2022 Palo Blanco Las Molinas is a new white from Los Realejos, a large plot of some 1.2 hectares of vines. In 2021, the grapes from this plot went into the Palo Blanco blend that they bottled in 2022. For the 2022 vintage, they bottled a 1,500-liter oak foudre separately to make this wine, and another 3,500 liters still went to the Palo Blanco blend. This has moderate alcohol, 11.5%, and very low pH and high acidity, unusual parameters for the variety, something that seems to come from the zone. It's fresh, floral and expressive with just a spicy twist. It has a vibrant palate and a long, tasty, almost salty finish. There is a plus of complexity and finesse here. 1,988 bottles and 24 magnums were filled in July 2023. Drink 2024 - 2029.

A moreish Pinot Grigio that shows wonderful intensity and textural shape across the mouth watering palate.

In Alto Adige Pinot Grigio ranks as one of the most important varieties and altitude is king. Erste + Neue’s Pinot Grigio comes from some of their highest sites ranging in altitudes up to 800 metres that have an array of different soil types. Picked in late September to retain acidity and freshness, post fermentation the pressed juice spends about 6 months in 110-hectolitre neutral oak and is left on gross less to provide additional texture and palate weight.
Bright pale straw colour with a watery hue. Elevated pear and red apple skin aromas are trailed by hints of quince, delicate honeysuckle and spice notes. Delicious pear and red apple fruits show wonderful intensity and textural shape across the mouth watering palate. Notions of quince, lime and wet stone the undercard. Zingy acidity with a long moreish finish.

Commencing with meticulous site selection and vineyard design in 1991, Felton Road's story is one of refusal to compromise. A strict 100% estate policy with fully organic and biodynamic viticulture ensures that the fruit arrives at the winery as pure as can be, while the entire estate comes as close to true sustainability as is possible. A commitment to hands-off winemaking: gravity flow; indigenous yeasts and malolactic; an avoidance of fining and filtration; all help preserve the wine's expression of its terroir. The result is Riesling, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir which accurately express the authenticity and complexity of the unique vineyards.

Felton Road farms four properties totaling 32 ha in the Bannockburn sub-region of Central Otago. Block 2 is positioned on a gentle east facing slope immediately north of Block 3 on The Elms vineyard and was planted in 1992.

The 2024 Chardonnay Block 2 is focused, firm and athletic. It has drive and continually propels forward. Ripe citrus and nectarine combine with sophisticated oak use that adds complexity. The 2024 is tight and compact but intense, with all the components to evolve and unfurl over the next decade and beyond. Drink 2026-2036.

The 2024 Chardonnay Block 6 is very complete. Firm and floral, this has more girth and expanse than Felton's Block 2, but it doesn't want for natural acidity. The 2024 is ripe but not lavish, with excellent clarity of fruit, precision and tension. Subtle nutty oak and lees-derived pastry notes linger. Drink 2026-2034.

Feudo Montoni enjoys a long history in the Valledolmo region of central western Sicily. Their cellars are housed in the baglio (typical Sicilian court square building) built by the noble Arogenese family in 1469. The property was purchased by current owner and winemaker Fabio Sireci’s grandfather Rosario in the late 1800s.
This Catarratto comes from the ‘Masso’ cru, which is one of the highest vineyards on the Feudo Montoni Estate at 700m and named because of its rocky-sandy soil. The vines are aged between 55 and 60 years old but have been grafted onto very old bush vines producing fruit that’s dense and full flavoured. This iron rich soil contributes to a wine that is intensely fresh and mineral. After concrete fermentation, the wine is kept on lees for 6 months with some batonnage before being bottled.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a glimmer of green around the outskirts and a watery hue. Intense pear and lime scents infused with fresh herbs are trailed by some Granny Smith apple, slate and mineral notes. Highly energised the palate features a racy flavour profile of lime, green apple and mandarin fruits infused with a mix of Mediterranean herbs, wet slate and saline characters. Crisp acidity. The long snappy finish laced with minerality.

The domaine of Francois Cotat is a tiny 4 hectares, and has been making some of the most exceptional wines of the Loire since 1947. Their success and individuality can be attributed to François' intense passion for creating the finest wine possible and his exceptionally placed vineyards. Prudent viticulture combined with densely planted vines, ultra-low yields and relatively late harvesting produces fantastically flavoursome fruit. Whilst not Biodynamic, Francois uses organic fertilisers and racks according to the phases of the moon. His incredible wines develop with age and, in the best vintages, can be cellared for more than 30 years.

This vineyard is where François has his oldest vines, these days the average age is about 40 years because he has had to replant many of the very old vines as the Sauvignon is susceptible to viruses as it ages and so past 60 years old the vine is usually close to unproductive. This vineyard produces the most flamboyant wines in this collection, there are subtle notes of orchard fruit and more power but don't let that fool you as it is all aligned to incredible finesse, cool acidity and tactile minerality. These are very special bottles.

Flinty and minerally with a long zingy finish.

The Fritz Haag estate is located in the heart of the central Mosel River Valley and has a history dating back to 1605. All 18.5ha of vineyards are planted to Riesling, the excellent micro-climate and deep slate soils of the Brauneberger Juffer slope forming the basis for some of the most intensely flavoured and elegantly-structured Rieslings in Mosel. This wine comes from the blue slate soils of the steep slope sites of the villages of Brauneberg and Mulheim.
Brilliant very pale straw colour with gleaming green tinged edges and a watery hue. Jumping from the glass are aromas of lime zest, lemon and mandarin followed by whiffs of orange blossom, wet steel and flinty mineral notes. Crunchy lime, lemon and mandarin fruits are underpinned by laser etched acidity. Traces of honeysuckle are also apparent. Very flinty and minerally, it has a long zingy finish.

Bodega Fulcro began as a small garage project in Val do Salnés, where Manuel "Chicho" Moldes quietly built a reputation for thoughtful, site-driven Albariño. He now works a collection of tiny, old vine parcels, many on the granitic sand soils that define the area, farming organically and harvesting by hand to keep each plot separate from the outset. Fermentation is handled with a light touch in the cellar, relying on indigenous yeasts, used wood and no malolactic conversion to preserve the clarity of each site. The result is a style that reflects both the coastal setting and the underlying granite, and it has quickly placed Fulcro among the region's most respected small producers.

Pedreira is assembled from parcels in Meaño, Padrenda and Sanxenxo, all planted on classic granitic soils near the Atlantic. The wine is fermented and aged across a mix of barrels and foudres, and it represents Fulcro's multi-site expression of Albariño drawn from some of their more coastal old vine holdings.

    Other Reviews....
The young 2024 A Pedreira is serious and austere, subtle, still a tad reductive but following the house style of whites that are clean, elegant and very tasty and with a subtle salty twist in the finish. It was produced with grapes from very white sandy soils in Meaño, Padrenda and Sanxenxo and fermented in oak (barrels and foudres) and 30% in stainless steel, where it matured for four to six months. I think this will be even better with a couple of years in bottle. The work with oak is unnoticeable in the flavors or aromas, but it gives the wine nuance and complexity. It comes in at 13% alcohol, with a pH of 3.32 and 8.1 grams of acidity. 65,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2025. Drink 2026-2032.

O Equilibrio is the original Fulcro bottling, sourced mainly from the Xesteriura vineyard with its schist-granite profile, complemented by two small parcels in Arra. Fermentation and ageing take place entirely in old French oak, giving this cuvée a more focused, vineyard-specific identity within the range.

    Other Reviews....
The wine that started it all goes even one step further in nuance, complexity and even balance. I'm taking about the superb 2023 O Equilibrio, cropped from a very balanced year with good ripeness and very good freshness. It's precise, multifaceted, subtle and elegant, with incredible detail, focused and precise like a laser cut. The word is balance, which is what the wine's name means. They aim for more complexity and structure than A Pedreira, produced mostly with grapes from the Xesteira vineyard on schist soils and two small plots on sandy soils in Arra. It fermented and matured in used 400- to 700-liter French oak barrels for 11 months. It has the following parameters: 13% alcohol, 3.26 pH and 7.9 grams of acidity. At this price, the quality is unbelievable. It should age beautifully. 12,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2024. Drink 2025-2033.

Georg Breuer estate was founded in 1880 as part of a wine merchant company, and has been owned by the Breuer family since the beginning of the 20th century. Georg Breuer enlarged the estate and increased the export of wines. His sons Bernhard and Heinrich and later Bernhard’s daughter Theresa expanded the vineyard size to 40 hectares in the best Rüdesheim, Rauenthal and Lorch sites. Theresa Breuer was thrust into the business after the sudden passing of her father in 2004, and through tireless work and dedication is now one of the most respected winemaking forces in Germany. The estate's focus is on top dry Riesling wines from the unique terroir of the Rheingau valley, and Breuer's flagship crus are Rüdesheim Berg Schlossberg and the 12.5-acre monopole, Rauenthal Nonnenberg.

The vineyard site Pfaffenwies was initially mentioned as ‘pafenwies’ in documents from 1211, and later as ‘pfaffenwissen’ (1235). It was named after Pastor Dydo, also known as ‘Pfaffe’. This steep site has a gradient of up to 45% and is situated between 90 to 160m above sea level. The soil is a combination of stony Hunsrück slate and Taunus quartzite, with loess in the lower parts. Riesling from this area is characterised by great elegance as well as pronounced acidity and minerality.

The 2022 Riesling Lorcher Pfaffenwies was harvested across six different parcels within this southwest-facing site, dating to the mid-1960s, ranging from slate closer to the river and more quartzite toward the forest. Theresa calls it a “complete picture of the vineyard.” It's fermented in Stück and Halbstück. The nose opens with a juicy yellow plum, a frisson of crushed yarrow and rock dust. The palate is concentrated and has something salty, insistent, mouth-watering and savory. Lemony brightness comes with a slight sense of lemon pith and crushed yarrow spice. It's very clear-cut, subtly nutty on the finish with much brightness and understated substance. (Bone-dry)

Based in the village of Chichée, one of the cooler, higher parts of Chablis, Domaine Gilbert Picq has earned a reputation for some of the region’s most incisive and mineral-driven wines. Giuseppe Quintarelli was known as ‘the Master of the Veneto’, and is the name behind one of the most renowned estates in Italy. Sadly, Giuseppe passed away in early 2012 and he leaves behind a legacy of producing remarkable wines with an outstanding philosophy, to his eldest daughter who continues to carry on the tradition of this great estate. With their easily recognisable hand scripted labels, these wines offer at glimpse into one of the world’s most faithful artisanal winemakers who was an ultimate believer in letting nature do her thing and in order for wines to reach their ultimate potential these wines were only released when he deemed them to be ready.

Bianco Secco is Quintarelli’s dry white from Garganega, Trebbiano, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and the local variety Saorin. Unlike the estate’s long-aged reds, this wine is fermented and matured on fine lees shortly after harvest with minimal time in oak, allowing freshness and structural balance to shine alongside Quintarelli’s traditional craftsmanship. Though often overlooked next to the legendary reds, Bianco Secco is quietly serious and capable of rewarding short- to medium-term cellaring, embodying the estate’s meticulous approach across styles.

Low in alcohol and softly aromatic, Koshu offers a clean, mineral profile that makes it an excellent alternative to other crisp whites like Albarino, Chablis, or dry Riesling.

Brilliant water like colour with a very faint tinge of green around the outskirts. Drifting from the glass are pear and red apple scents followed by hints of honeysuckle, fresh herb and subtle flinty mineral notes. Light and crisp yet nicely rounded on the mid palate, it features delicate pear, lime and green apple fruits over a zingy flint and mineral infused back drop that gives it an electric stony feel. Finishes dry, edgy and crunchy.
Drink over the next 3-4 years.

Fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks with no lees contact, the 2022 is ripe, richly perfumed with fresh green apple, white peach, Nashi pear and grapefruit aromas. There's vibrant acidity and concentrated fruits on the palate, pleasant and long. Drinking well now, though may evolve for another five years in the bottle. Drink 2023-2028.

Crisp, gently peppery and herbal wine with a green pear and lemon water flavour. Light in body, delicate, fine dusty and peppery feel to texture, tangy citrus crunch to acidity, subtle gingery character, with a tight and dry finish of very good length. So refreshing and pleasing to drink. Barely there in a way, yet so present. Drink 2023-2026+.

Brilliant water like colour with a faint greenish tinge to the edges. Pronounced scents of pear and lime intermingle with green apple, infusions of fresh herbs and stony mineral notes. Refreshing lime, green pear and Granny Smith apple fruits have a light energetic feel across the palate with notions of wet stone, infusions of fresh herbs and minerals lining the back half. Crisp acidity with a dry, frisky finish.

There’s just a fraction more ripeness to the 2021 vintage over 2020.
Lightly peppery, fennel, white peach, nori. Soft, a little more juiciness to flavour, fine peppery and chalky feel, cool crunch on a long clean finish. Fresh, but flavoursome (albeit in the subdued Grace style). Lovely. Drink 2022-2028.

Rich, luscious and viscous with a long, exotic off dry finish.

Brilliant water like core with greenish tinged edges. Ripe pear, Jonathan apple and honeysuckle aromas flood the nostrils followed by hints of musk, Turkish delight and ginger. Rich, luscious pear, red apple and honeysuckle flavours carry a viscous feel across the palate. Subtle musk, Turkish delight and spice elements lie underneath. Off dry it has a lick of brisk acidity to freshen things up. Finishes long, exotic and juicy.

A flinty number with struck stone at the forefront. Poire William pear, grappa and pickled ginger. There is character and a strong sense of palate value here, with swirls of candied lemon, pomelo and pith. Some earthy oyster mushroom and white pepper. Plenty to ponder on. Some tactile skin tension adds further interest. A great wine for Thai and herby, salty dishes. Drink by 2030.

Concentrated and textural with mouth filling flavours and refreshing acidity.

Fermented predominately in old oak barrels using wild yeast then matured in the same barrels for around 6 months with occasional lees stirring. Approximately two-thirds underwent malolactic fermentation.
Brilliant pale straw colour with green tinged edges and a watery hue. Intense gooseberry and citrus aromas infused with a mix of herbaceous grassy characters, pencil shavings, asparagus and spice emanating from the glass. Concentrated and texturally voluminous in it’s flow across the palate, mouth filling ripe gooseberry, passionfruit, pear and lime fruits meld into a back drop of herbaceous grassy elements, pencil shavings and spice. Refreshing acidity with a long generously endowed finish.

A wine for pausing and taking it all in. This is alluring with its passionfruit gels, tangerine and lemon myrtle oil. Some frangipani and candle wax. Dried hay and barley crop. The palate extends the robust flavour of grilled nuts and manuka honey, with good skin and oak texture. Some bitter orange on the finish. A wine with lots of detail and complexity. Drink by 2030.

Greywacke is the Marlborough label of former Cloudy Bay winemaker Kevin Judd, where he presided over that company’s first 25 vintages establishing the reputation that it has today. The name Greywacke was adopted by Kevin and his wife Kimberley for their first Marlborough vineyard in Rapaura, named in recognition of the high prevalence of rounded greywacke river stones in the soils of the vineyard. Kevin registered the name back in 1992 with the vague notion that he might one day want to use it on a wine label of his own.
Fruit was sourced from various prime vineyard sites in Marlborough’s Southern Valleys and the central Wairau Plains with a portion of the juice fermented in old oak barrels.

Brilliant water like core with greenish tinged edges. Pungent nose with aromas of passionfruit, herbaceous gooseberry and lime leaping out of the glass. Subtle green apple, stony mineral and grassy notes ensue. Scrumptious passionfruit, lime and green apple fruits burst across the palate with terrific intensity. Complimenting delicate herbaceous gooseberry, subtle grassy and flinty mineral elements also chime in. Displaying outstanding power and textural volume it has crisp acidity and a long, zesty finish.
Drink over the next 1-2 years.

A stroll through an island rainforest is the best way to describe this wine. A canopy of elderflower blooms, green apple, and mangosteen flesh opens the experience, while the variety’s flourishing, leafy qualities sit at its heart in the most enticing way. Notes of cut lime, papaya skin and aloe gel weave through. The palate builds with each sip – a touch of self-raising flour mealiness, a hint of lemon-butter creaminess, all carried in an overall dry style that both quenches and intrigues. Its natural arch of acidity drives the wine forward, underpinned by a low hum of power and a full force of flavour. Best enjoyed in a wide glass, to capture its full effect. Drink by 2029.

The 2024 Sauvignon Blanc was hand delivered to me in Fremantle by winemaker Richelle Tyney from Greywacke, all the way from Marlborough, New Zealand—roughly 5,200 kilometers between us. The wine leads with passion fruit and white pineapple, green apple, beeswax and brine. The wine is salty, fine and sedate—the characters are all in balance with each other. I love this wine from this small producer. It is intense and concentrated, shaped by savory phenolics and loaded with crunchy New Zealand acidity. This speaks of the place in a clear, unfettered voice, and it's brilliant for that. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2025-2030.

The 2023 Hipping Nierstein Riesling VDP.GG initially shows a restrained, slightly phenolic nose with a dense, light fruitiness that has some tropical notes, such as lychee. It is juicy and creamy on the palate, with a beautiful fullness combined with elegance. The finish is dense and mineral, quite complex and long, although not as refined as the Pettenthal or Rothenberg wines. Tasted at the Vorpremiere VDP.Grosses Gewächs in Wiesbaden in August 2024. The 2023 Riesling Niersteiner Hipping Grosses Gewächs was made with whole berries in the ferment rather than prolonged pre-fermentation skin contact. It opens with stone dust, crushed lemon balm, a touch of flinty reduction and an enticing blend of red apple and juicy tangerine, even with a touch of creaminess. That creaminess is also immediate on the palate, pervaded by fine freshness. There’s real concentration and drive here, tingling with lemon brightness and savory red stone. Beautiful, serene and slender, it has lovely substance and a lasting, salty finish. (Bone-dry) Drink 2028-2060.

What complex and original aromas this excellent dry riesling GG has: all the Mediterranean herbs, also grapefruit peel, pomelo and bergamot. This beautifully balances excellent ripeness that has a slight tropical edge with cool minerality on the medium-bodied palate. Very long, refined finish with a stony intensity that builds and builds. The 2023 Pettenthal Nierstein Riesling VDP.GG shows a bright, clear, finely spicy, mineral and complex nose of broken rock. The 2023 Riesling Niersteiner Pettenthal Grosses Gewächs offers creaminess, peppery lemon balm, ripe red apple crunchiness and intense iron-oxide and petrichor savor, all still wrapped in enticing reductive tones. The palate is smooth and streamlined, moving forward with grace, determination and emollience. Everything here is buffered, but at the core, bright citrus tanginess tingles, edged with mouthwatering saltiness. Beautifully coherent, seamless and flowing, this seems to sink deeper into its red stone nature, leaving a spicy, peppery aftertaste that’s as much informed by fine acidity as by veil-like phenolics. The 2023 Riesling Nackenheimer Rothenberg Grosses Gewächs still rings with the finest flinty reduction on the nose. Underneath comes a gorgeous streak of pink grapefruit peel, lifted, serene and almost heady with crushed lemongrass and lemon balm. The palate is buffered but shows a clear vein of agile fluidity and serene, sleek, dynamic movement. Leaving gorgeous traces of stony, irony, savory saltiness and unfolding with Seville orange and tangerine, it’s layered, beautiful, soothing, refreshing and long. Citrus zest lingers on the finish. This stunning expression of the great Rothenberg site is still very tightly wound, the flintiness very pronounced in the first moment, the delicate white peach and wild berry fruit expanding like a rosebud slowly opening during a period of cool weather. Underplayed power and concentration on the extremely precise, medium-bodied palate. Tremendous finesse in the very long, filigreed finish. From organically grown grapes with FairChoice certification. Fritz's Riesling grows in a very small and special part of Rheinhessen called the Roter Hang, a name meaning “red hill“ due to its red-slate soils. The combination of the red slate soil, its proximity to the Rhine river, exposure to the sun and the steepness of the vineyards are perfect for producing wines with wonderful ripeness.
Brilliant very pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Lifted aromas of lime and red apple are trailed by some pear, wet slate and flinty notes. Mouth watering pear, lime and red apple fruits are underpinned by crisp, juicy acidity. Traces of honeysuckle and slatey mineral elements linger through the dry back half. Finishes fruity with plenty of zip and length.
