While Vaulorent is part of the larger Fourchaume set of premier cru vineyards, it's particularly well regarded as it sits on the same slope as the grand cru vineyards, bordering Les Preuses. Vaulorent shares the same limestone-rich Kimmeridgian soils as the grand cru plots, yet with a varied aspect from true south to an area facing north west.

Quebec born Patrick Piuze has worked widely across the globe, and after a short stint running his wine bar in Montreal he made the move to Burgundy to further explore his love for terroir driven wines. Patrick Piuze made a name for himself as an accomplished winemaker with his work at Olivier Leflaive, La Maison Verget, and finally as the cellar master at Jean-Marc Brocard. His experiences finally led to the decision to start his own winery business in 2008. It was a significant undertaking, yet with a passion for the region and his desire to promote the great terroirs of Chablis, Patrick is now one of the leading producers in the region.
Bougros, along with Les Preuses, was a later addition to the grand cru vineyards, and sits towards the northern end of the limestone-rich Kimmeridgian soil slopes. Lower down the hill, Bougros gets good sun exposure and while it can show more power and richness than some other grand cru sites, it still maintains an intense mineral core.

Les Preuses is an excellent plot within the grand cru Chablis vineyards, situated at the northern end higher up the slope from Bougros. Excellent access to sunlight, along with the limestone bedrock below the vineyard, allows the wines from Les Preuses to balance richness with exquisite finesse.

2020 Patrick Piuze Les Preuses Chablis Grand CruChablis, FRANCE$250. 00Bottle$3000.00 DozenABV: 12%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
An elegant, pure and quite airy nose freely reveals its combination of white flowers, essence of poached pear, anise, mineral reduction and shellfish. The delicious and more refined if less powerful flavors possess a Zen-like sense of harmony on the mineral-driven, balanced and beautifully long finale. This will need to develop more depth with time in bottle but that is one of the strong points of a fine Preuses - it almost always develops well. Drink 2030+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Chablis Les Preuses Grand Cru is a little more expressive and delineated on the nose compared to the Les Clos at this stage, offering yellow plums mixed with light spicy scents and a touch of smoke. The palate is well balanced, wonderfully defined and powerful, but much more elegant than the Les Clos, with a gorgeous apricot-tinged finish and a peppery aftertaste. Superb. Drink 2025-2045.

Here too there is a citrus confit character to the more floral suffused aromas of oyster shell, quinine and brine. There is again very good volume to the sappy and powerful larger-scaled flavors that terminate in a lemony, austere and highly persistent finish that isn't quite as complex, at least not yet. Drink 2030+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru is very reduced on the nose, although there seems to be good concentration here and Piuze commented that this is nothing unusual. The palate is well balanced, quite primal, rich and slightly honeyed, leading to a powerful finish where I am just seeking a little more delineation. Let’s see how this turns out in bottle. Drink 2024-2040.

This is aromatically quite similar to the Butteaux if more elegant thanks to offering more spice and floral elements. There is less concentration but more refinement to the utterly delicious middle weight flavors that are also supported by lemon-tinged acidity on the very dry, focused and lingering finale that is youthfully austere. Here too at least some patience is advised. Drink 2027+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru presents a tightly wound nose that opens with aeration, revealing sea spray and orange peel notes, quite strict and focused. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, taut and fresh, although I find the Vaulorent displays a little more personality and complexity on the finish. Drink 2024-2038.

2020 Patrick Piuze Butteaux Chablis Premier CruChablis, FRANCE$125. 00Bottle$1500.00 DozenABV: 12%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
A very Chablis-like nose features notes of mineral reduction, pear, apple, shellfish and a plethora of citrus elements. The succulent and round yet decidedly powerful medium-bodied flavors exhibit borderline painful intensity before culminating in a very dry, firm and austere finale. Patience strongly suggested. Drink 2027+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Chablis Les Butteaux 1er Cru had received a bit of SO2 a couple of days before my visit. For that reason, it is a little muted on the nose, opening gradually to reveal yellow flower scents. The well-balanced palate offers grapefruit and melon notes, a fine bead of acidity and good weight on the finish. It does need to cohere in the glass, but this has good potential. Drink 2023-2035.

Once again there is a citrus confit element suffusing the aromas of tidal pool, mineral reduction and ripe pear. The rich and even fuller-bodied flavors brim with dry extract that imparts a sappy texture to the citrusy, clean and very dry finale. This delicious and refreshing effort will need to add better depth to achieve the upper end of my predicted ranged. Drink 2027+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Chablis Fôrets 1er Cru is taut and delineated on the complex, engaging nose, delivering plenty of green apples and revealing hints of musk and fennel with time. The intense palate is very well balanced and powerful. Quite fruit-driven and rounded toward the finish, so I suspect this will drink earlier than Piuze’s other cuvées. Delicious. Drink 2023-2033.

Bursting with aromas of orange zest, pear, oyster shell and beeswax, Piuze's 2019 Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses is full-bodied, satiny and intense, its ample core of fruit underpinned by racy acids and framed by chalky structuring, concluding with a long, pungently mineral finish. Out of the gates, this is the high point of the range—the only question is if this year's Côte de Bouqueyreaux might catch up with it in the fullness of time?

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Aug 2021)The 2019 Chablis Les Preuses Grand Cru has an exquisite bouquet of honeycomb, orange blossom, quince and yellow flowers, all beautifully defined. The harmonious palate is taut and linear, with impressive depth and lip-smacking salinity on the finish. Maybe this will ultimately surpass the Les Clos.

Neal Martin - VinousMid yellow, discreetly balanced nose with, some weight coming up behind, this is a complete wine balanced across the piece, a touch of spice behind, though less than Bougros. White fruit now appears at the back of the palate, complex and very long indeed.

Aromas of citrus zest, white flowers, Anjou pear, pastry cream and fresh bread introduce the 2019 Chablis 1er Cru Les Forêts, a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy wine that's satiny and precise, concluding with a long, saline finish.

Neal Martin - VinousFrom the lower slopes, which gives more flesh in this cru. A touch of yellow to the colour and rather a powerful bouquet, with a touch of heat. Entirely white fruit though, with very good weight and exceptional length.

The 2019 Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre opens in the glass with notes of citrus zest, white flowers, mint, beeswax and pastry cream. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and structured, with a deep core of fruit, it's tightly wound, with fine cut and back-end grip.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Aug 2021)The 2019 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru is a little richer on the nose than the Les Butteaux, offering touches of butterscotch mixed with dried flowers, all very open and expressive. The open-knit palate is rounded and honeyed on the entry, and the minerally finish lingers in the mouth. Superb.

Neal Martin - VinousThe fruit comes from the central triangle of Montée de Tonnerre. Mid yellow in colour, while the nose shows a bit of evolution. Tighter on the palate, but this is not quite, so evident. Not showing well at this stage in its evolution.
